NO ONE SAID THIS WOULD BE EASY. Over a year into our long-running nightmare, the end still can sometimes look like little more than a faint, flickering light on the horizon. Even if the good-vibes-only grit of early 2020 has become a distant memory, as recurring restrictions continue to take their toll on our collective psyche, our city’s restaurants aren’t giving up. They, like so many of us, are weathering the storm—more to the point, they are helping us weather the storm. What do we turn to when we’re told to work from home indefinitely? When we can’t go out with friends to that new Mexican-Japanese fusion place slinging Kobe beef tacos? When we’ve realized that Gordon Ramsay’s masterclass on cooking eggs has absolutely failed us? Comfort food. And for that, Bangkok’s best, most accessible restaurants deliver. Kind of literally, in fact.

BK’s Best Eats 2021 highlights the city’s soul food champions. Whether you’re looking for vegan junk food, Gen Tso’s chicken, or Japanese curry rice, you’ll find it here. This guide features precisely the kind of food you want to shamelessly tuck into after a long day at the office, aka your kitchen table. All of it’s affordable, honest, and delicious. You can rest easy knowing you won’t have to put yourself at risk, either. Almost all the restaurants in these pages offer delivery through their own channels or one of the half dozen apps we have at our disposal. Order early, order often, and when the time comes, check these places out in person, because nothing beats good food in the company of good people.

Baan Ice

Paknang

This family-run restaurant may have propelled Supaksorn “Ice” Jongsiri into the limelight, but this treasured institution eschews stardom. Here, you’ll find fiery spices and herb-inflected flavors inspired by Ice’s grandparents in dishes like the khao yum (southern rice salad) and the khanom jeen (fermented rice noodles) served with crab curry. Fresh fish and plump crab might be the main draw, but don’t miss the wonderfully decadent desserts, either.

Set in a multi-story shophouse near the Revenue Department, the southern Thai restaurant boasts an Ari-appropriate aesthetic that would make Wes Anderson nod in approval: potted plants, a pastel color palette, vintage décor. The kitchen, however, deals in full-flavored takes on generations-old family recipes, like yellow curry with snapper and coconut shoots, turmeric fried chicken and pork knuckle stewed in coconut water. Creative cocktails and herbal drinks temper the heat.

Janhom Despite its suburban location, this southern Thai specialist still packs in crowds, all streaming in to try Surat Thani native Poonsri “Auntie Baew” Sarikarn’s fiery dishes. Auntie Baew refuses to season her dishes with sugar to accommodate us wimpy Bangkokians. Order her gaeng luang with crab priced by weight, but make sure you have plenty of rice—this soup is a delicious assault on the palate. 273/4 Ramkhamhaeng Soi 21. 02-319-1128. Phuket Town With a name like this, you know what you’re in for: southern Thai dishes that reflect Phuket’s rich heritage. Think nam prik goong sieb (shrimp paste with sun dried shrimp), Hokkien-style mee noodles, kai thod kamin (fried chicken with turmeric), and the ever-present stink beans with shrimp. The colorful shophouse recalls the colonial town’s charming architecture, too. 126/2 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor). 02-714-9402. Open daily 11am-10:30pm

Kub Khao spans both western and Thai comfort food, from rad na (thick noodles in gravy) to spaghetti aglio e olio. The restaurant also serves classic iBerry desserts like ice cream and waffles.

Standing the test of time since the 70s, Sanguan Sri is an old-school Thai food jaunt doling out comfort Thai food the same way it always has. Their stir-fried Chinese kale with crispy pork and chili sauce is what locals love them for, but their fish balls in green curry, available on Thursday only, is a must-try.

Petra

Asoke favorite Rawabina moved to bigger digs from its previous four-seat shop, and the crowds have followed. Most used to swing by to get juicy shawarma, chat with the owner, and bounce. This Nana spot specializes in Arabic fare, specifically Yemeni. Decor might be modest, but the food is most certainly not. The top seller here is the smoky mandi, made with spiced chicken or lamb and served with rice and shoestring fried onions. VIETNAMESE Lele by Le Mai Anh Using fresh veggies from their own farm in Pathum Thani and their own sauces, this former Old Town favorite relocated to Phrom Phong serves Vietnamese home-cooking at its finest. The menu draws on family recipes for the hearty pho, the vibrant yum pla yuan (spicy Vietnamese fish salad), and nem nuong (grilled minced pork served with a rice paper wrap and greens). Tonkin Annam

Hanoi House

Serving classic dishes that go far beyond pho, the Vietnamese siblings who run this always-buzzing, reservations-required two-story restaurant churn out recipes passed down from their grandparents. Think chao tom (shrimp grilled on sugarcane), crispy banh xeo (pancake with pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts), and flavor-packed nem nuong.

Bright-colored walls and Vietnamese kitsch draw you into this small space in Mahatun Plaza. Don’t expect any unusual twists here. The menu ticks all the right boxes across a range of classic dishes. The eighthour-stewed beef pho is light and fragrant, while the nam nueng (grilled pork dumplings) taste just right— sweet, salty, and juicy, an oddly perfect companion for rocket fuel-like iced Vietnamese coffee.

Thonglor’s Missing Burro offers authentic Mexican flavors that go far beyond burritos. Run by Gaggan and Gaa alumni, this taco truck hits Sukhumvit with a taste of Southern California, bringing LA-style Mexican fare to our own City of Angels. Easy Burger

Prime Burger

On Nut’s Easy Burger specializes in the smash technique, which produces a thin patty with crispy edges and a juicy center. The best part? The patties are made from organic local beef that’s been dryaged for 28 days, and they’re sandwiched between a homemade milk bun. Options for toppings include shallots and special sauce, maple bacon jam and gorgonzola, and homemade ranch and pickles.

Originally hailing from Phuket, this smash burger specialist joined Bangkok’s increasingly crowded field in 2019. The burgers here stack up against the best in town, thanks to homemade rolls and beef ground in-house. The result is juicy, call-your-friends-now burgers served with a range of special toppings, from a proprietary sauce to pickled jalapeños to truffle mayo.

Il Bolognese

Pizzeria Mazzie

This trattoria is a Bangkok staple, having been around since 2009. Everything is good here, especially the pizzas, which are wonderfully crisp yet pillowy, moist but burnt in all the right places. Go classic with the margherita; this pizza has the zing of a good tomato base, which is cut with chunky and surprisingly tangy buffalo mozzarella.

The centerpiece at Ekkamai’s wood-fired pizza specialist is the “low-dome” Acunto oven. Slightly smoky, perfectly charred pies pop out of the Italian-made oven, each bursting with flavor from the homemade, hand-tossed dough and generous toppings. The pizza is a perfect partner for the craft beers and biodynamic wines on the menu.

INDIAN Rang Mahal Rang Mahal has succeeded in bringing Bangkokians grand Indian dining in an OTT setting that would make the Mughals proud. The food never fails to satisfy, either. The paneer tikka badshahi (soft pieces of barbecued cottage cheese) have just enough spice to complement their delicious dips, with flavors like mint and tamarind, while the rogan josh Kashmiri, goat meat cooked in a rich tomato-based sauce, is a filling treat. Tamil Nadu

Saravanaa Bhavan

Silom’s home to southeastern Indian cuisine is a city favorite among locals and chefs, off-putting exteriors aside. The giant masala dosa is cooked to order and teeming with a delicious masala potato filling. Nearly every table can be found tucking into the dosa or vegetarian thali sets, but there’s also a concise menu of meat curries that will make any meat-eater swoon.

The self-described “world’s no. 1 Indian vegetarian restaurant chain” hails from Tamil Nadu in India’s South, but its massive menu spans the Subcontinent—you’ll even find Chinese Indian dishes here. Typically, though, expect the holy trinity of dosa (thin rice and lentil crepes with various fillings), idli (steamed lentil rice cakes), and vada (crispy lentil doughnuts).

5/1 Silom Soi 11. 02-235-6336. Open daily 10am-9pm

2/F, Baan Silom, 663 Silom Soi 19. 02-635-4556. Open daily 10am-10:30pm

Amritsr This small chain of restaurants offers all the smoky, rich specials native to the Punjab region of India. Think tender tandoori chicken, fragrant biryani, dahl curry, and palak paneer (spinach curry with cubed paneer) alongside flaky roti, paratha, and naan. The house specialty, though, is the Amritsari kulcha (lightly raised flatbread) with chicken, mutton, or chickpea curry. 26/13 Sukhumvit Soi 11; Sukhumvit Soi 22. 083-009-9719. Open daily 9am-9pm

Ms.Maria & Mr.Singh 8 Soi 6 (Ekkamai), 091-698-6688. Open daily 10am-10pm. Taking over the former home of Meatilicious, the restaurant’s vibrant palette of orange and blue paints a fictitious story of a love affair between a Mexican girl and an Indian boy. The menu merges home-style Mexican cooking and Indian curries with a fieriness worthy of the neon sign proclaiming “love should never be mild.”
