“Ok that pool and beach look amazing!” Instagram user @courtneyabbruzzese on the new Centara Reserve Samui opening on Chaweng beach

“When BK starts using a meme photo— cheers to that.” Facebook user Waichue Sebastian Solasachinda on BK’s story on the lifting of the booze ban

“10-15 years ago, almost impossible to find cold weather/hiking gear in Thailand. But, for my Japan winter trip, two years ago, no problem— thanks to new shops like this and Uniqlo.” Twitter user @AjJohn1 on the new North Face shop in CentralWorld (see p8)

PEARL-CLUTCHING

MONOPOLIES

A woman stepping on the colors of the Thai flag in a digitally enhanced image? Why, I never! In case you missed it, or you tuned out people like this long ago, Sonthiya Sawasdee, a guy who once did stuff with the government and now just riles up the base, threatened to sue Anchilee Scott-Kemmis, a.k.a. Miss Universe Thailand, for precisely the above. *Slow clap.*

Monopoly the board game: fun. Monopoly as it concerns your access to the internet: not so much. Recently, news broke that True and DTAC—the nation’s second- and third-largest telecom providers—were looking to merge, leaving AIS as the only real competition. Lest we forget, True is owned by CP, which already owns a whole helluva lot of things in Thailand.

PLEDGES It’s old news, but it bears repeating: Thailand is one of few nations that refused to sign COP26 pledges to end deforestation and cut methane emissions. On the bright side, Prayuth’s attendance made for great photo ops and one-liners for the next time he has to campaign—performative elbow bumps with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, stealing “there is no Planet B” from Ban Ki-moon, who said it with actual sincerity.

COMPENSATION The Health Minister has urged people waiting for the Moderna jabs they paid for months ago to get free vaccines provided by the government. Naturally, the government won’t be compensating these people for their expenditures. Why would they? They only denied private hospitals the right to negotiate with Moderna and instead very slowly procured them on their behalf, essentially eading us to this moment.

Lockdown is over. The booze ban is over(ish). So where should you go out for a drink? Here’s a primer to Bangkok’s nightlife scene right now. By BK Magazine

008 Bar

COCKTAILS 008 BAR

RABBIT HOLE

Grab your Lee-Enfield and gas mask—we’re going to war. As you push open the unmarked door of this hotel bar, you’ll be immersed by the sound of the trenches. Next, journey through time to the Roaring Twenties with live jazz, leather armchairs, and nuanced cocktails that will make your mouth sing (although your wallet might groan).

You’re sure to meet some friendly faces at this dimly lit Thonglor speakeasy, which has annually earned a spot on Asia’s 50 Best Bars list for its hip vibe and innovative cocktails. The fun-loving bar staff—who have won their own fair share of accolades—put sophisticated ingredients, like lavender syrup, chrysanthemum smoke, and white truffle oil fat-washed gin, to good use in libations that range from “fragrant” to “spirit-forward.”

11/F, Akyra Hotel, Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 02-392-8959

ASIA TODAY

Thaipioka

Mutual Bar

Neon signage, walls hung with evocative photography, and a giant hammerhead shark looming overhead set the scene at this quirky Chinatown shophouse, where revelers regularly spill out onto the street. Take it all in while owner Niks Anuman-Rajadhon regales you with hair-raising tales of his foraging missions to gather wild honey for the unique cocktails—and perhaps stories about his tumultuous past two years speaking out against Thailand’s alcohol restrictions.

THAIPIOKA Inside this low-key cocktail haunt, from the same people who run a couple others on this list, a long, warmly lit bar invites you to sit and watch the bartenders work their magic on—you guessed it—Thai-inspired creations that taste and look the part. If drinking turmeric-, red bean-, or cow fat-laced cocktails doesn’t appeal, you can always play it safe with a highball.

35 Soi Maitri Chit, 097-134-4704

Salil Hotel, 44/7 Thonglor Soi 1, 087-713-6943

ALONETOGETHER

TROPIC CITY

A joint venture between Ku Bar and the Sugar Ray empire, this two-story venue keeps it classy with stiff cocktails, live jazz, and cigars. Sip on classics with subtle, local twists— like the coffee-infused gin fizz—as you jive to live jazz on the ground floor, or head upstairs to puff on a cigar in the vinyl-listening room.

We’ve lost count of how many times we’ve awoken to discover blurry photos of neon pink flamingos and tropical wallpaper on our phones—solid evidence that we, yet again, ended our night with a-few-too-many potent rum cocktails at Charoenkrung’s enduringly popular party enclave. The nights we do remember are always filled with solid music, good vibes, and new friends.

29 Sukhumvit Soi 31, 02-163-4778

672/65 Charoenkrung Soi 28, 083-838-2750 Rabbit Hole

JUNKER AND BAR This compact bar has long been known for its unusual combination of hearty burgers and awesome G&Ts. After a year-plus of forced closure, it’s back in business, but a little smaller (one room closed) and with a new food menu. Suan Phlu, rejoice! Your neighborhood bar is back. 454 Suan Phlu Soi 1, 085-100-3608

MUTUAL BAR Phrom Phong’s thriving speakeasy stayed busy with unexpected collaboration last year—e.g., a fashion line (which was meant to be paired with unique cocktails, until things went haywire in Bangkok) and drinks made with the director of The Medium. Now that they’re back in business, seek out the tucked-away elevator next to Ramen Ichiban and head to the fifth floor, where you’ll find cocktails spanning from floral and easy drinking to more complex concoctions.

VESPER Cracking the top 50 in the latest edition of the World’s 50 Best Bars—despite it being closed for so many months in 2020 and 2021… thanks, Thailand—Silom’s debonair cocktail lounge takes its cues from London’s most serious drinking dens. Long-term head barman Suppawit “Palm” Muttaratana recently left, but in his place comes yet another pedigreed bar manager: Federico Balzarini, formerly of the American Bar at the Savoy in London. 10/15 Convent Rd., 02-235-2777

IZAKAYA JUA This modern izakaya fuels nights out in Talad Noi with perfectly juicy charcoal grilled skewers, an effortlessly cool vibe, and ample sake, shochu, and umeshu. The one-page menu is nice and tight, featuring all of the above plus cocktails made with Japanese spirits. 672/49 Charoenkrung Soi 28, 02-103-6598

YOSHIBAR If you’re not au fait with Japan’s national drink, this bar’s friendly owner will be more than happy to walk you through his impressive sake collection. Before you dig in, order some happy hour highballs and comforting bites like korokke (croquettes), wagyu don, and gyoza. On weekends, the chilled-out bar regularly takes a lively turn with the addition of guest DJs.

CRAFT BEER

124 Sukhumvit Soi 53, 02-115-2944

JIDORI CUISINE KEN

BAAN BANGKOK

HAIR OF THE DOG

Tucked away in a dead-end soi, Jidori has all the authenticity and log-cabin charm of a great izakaya, not to mention awesome, charcoal-grilled chicken skewers—crisp exterior, very little charring, and a moist, perfectly cooked interior. They serve both draft beer and Japanese highballs, plus enough sake—by glass or bottle—to float a small ship.

Taking the underground aboveground, Baan Bangkok deals in beers that may or may not be officially sanctioned by the Thai government. No matter. This spacious, second-story set in Dusit, of all places, pours 20 taps of arguably the best craft beer from Thai brewers you’ll find in the city.

Backed by a pair of Canadian beer geeks, both branches of this medical asylum-themed craft beer bar (Phloen Chit and Phrom Phong) feature a maddening selection of bottles, plus (plus) double figures of rotating taps featuring familiar names like Evil Twin and Stone.

253/1 Si Ayutthaya Rd., 081-734-2725

10/12 Sukhumvit Soi 26, 02-661-3457 Hair of the Dog

DUKE OF BEERINGTON Thonglor’s quasi-tucked away bottle shopslash-bar boasts an enviable, ever-rotating selection of beer that keeps the regulars coming back to pay their respects to the Duke. Drink-in prices are a little more than they are for takeaway, but even then the beer is competitively priced, super fresh, and worth every satang. G/F, SK Tower, 858 Sukhumvit Rd. (Thonglor), 092-887-7141

2/F, Mahatun Plaza, 888/26 Phloen Chit Rd., 02-650-7589 593/27 Sukhumvit Soi 33/1, 02-258-1461

HAZE Haze takes over the space once occupied by Let the Boy Die and thankfully carries on the tradition, if you will, set by its predecessor: live music, tasty bar snacks, and lots of beer. As far as the latter goes, expect big, bold-flavored craft beer from local brands like Puma and Baan Bangkok as well as the best of the best imported to Thailand. 425 Luang Rd., 083-603-6911

THE FAT COW Putting Thai craft beer in the spotlight, this oneroom bar and restaurant gathers local labels like Maalstroom, Water on Mars, and Samata to accompany its juicy burgers. You can also expect to find international names like Toppling Goliath (USA) and Feral Brewing (Aus). If Lad Phrao isn’t on the right side of the river for you, know that there’s a branch in Bang Wa, too. 765 Lat Phrao Rd., 092-556-2876

MIKKELLER We’re not in Denmark anymore, not that you’d know it from the prices at Ekkamai’s craft beer stronghold. Regular tap takeovers, weekly beer-and-burger specials, an apocalypse-ready stash of labels, and backyard keggers take the sting out and keep us coming back to this bar’s charming backstreet house. 26 Ekkamai Soi 10, 02-381-9891

FATTY’S

Mikkeller

Gorge on cheese curds, beer, Bloody Mary’s, and burgers at Din Daeng’s mini ode to Wisconsin, where garage bands and walls plastered in Americana will give you those flyover state feels. Be sure to wear your finest flannel shirt and cargo shorts to blend in with the crowd. 598/66 Asoke Din Daeng Rd., 02-245-2965

Q&A BAR

Razing the bar

This Asoke bar revamped itself into a chic ice cream parlor during lockdown, whipping up scrumptious, homemade frozen desserts ranging from creamy vanilla ice crean to yuzu and booze-infused G&T sorbets. Bartender Attapon De Silva says they are doing it all from scratch, too, using locally sourced and house-made ingredients.

Lockdown restrictions may have eased, but some bars aren’t back to business as usual just yet.

JUST A DRINK MAYBE

The relocated gin bar, now serving Sathorn’s office crowds in the shadows of the Mahanakhon building, isn’t pouring G&Ts at the moment. But it is serving breakfast-friendly dishes like avocado toast and spinach alongside heavier meals like fish and chips and wagyu ragu, as well as top-notch coffee. 37 Soi Suksa Witthaya (BTS Chong Nonsi), 095-341-9056

235/13 Sukhumvit Soi 21, 02-664-1445

SALON DU JAPONISANT

Masked behind an unmarked door, this intimate cocktail bar acts as a showroom for Japanese sake and spirit importer Bacchus Global. Since the beginning of this year, the bar has now converted to just a regular cafe, swapping their boozy Japanese drinks with latte art with a variety of beans to choose from. 36/5 Sukhumvit Soi 3, 092-294-4457

Lost&Found

Sathorn’s latest post-work hangout gives Cafe de Stag a run for its money with its upscale-casual French bistro vibe—think awesome drink deals, checkered floors, counter bar seating, and green-painted walls that feature stellar artwork by French urban artist Kostar. Pair Mediterranean bites with cocktails that embrace local ingredients like dragon fruit, lemongrass, and galangal. 28/12 Sathorn Soi 10, 084-079-8830

BKK SOCIAL CLUB The sparkly new Four Seasons Bangkok scored big when it got Philip Bischoff, former bar manager of Singapore’s esteemed Manhattan, to take the reins at its flagship bar. Decor and drinks are inspired by the glamor of old Buenos Aires, meaning you can puff fine cigars as you sip Latin American and pre-Prohibition era concoctions next to the river.

MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

ROOFTOP ABAR

WINE ABOUT EATERY If you’re new to the game, Bangkok’s original natural wine bistro will educate you on viniculture, aging processes, and pairing tips. Packed with organic, biodynamic, and sustainable labels, the immense wine list charts sparkling, red, white, rose, and even orange wine (white wine made using the same method as red wine)—the perfect accompaniment for Italian cold cuts and pasta. G/F, Ocean Tower 2, Asoke Soi 3 (Sukhumvit Soi 21), 02-665-2772

KANGKAO Last year, Kangkao relocated from its tucked away location on Phra Sumen Road to Nangloeng Shophouse just up the street, opening only on Friday and Saturday nights. Despite the move, you can still expect the same quality natural wines, just in a sleeker space. 2/F, 469 Phra Sumen Rd., 02-067-6731

MOD KAEW Think natural wine is only for elitist millennials? Despite its decidedly millennial crowd and the bro’d out lingo employed on its menu and social accounts, this place intends to prove otherwise. The wines are all natural, but they aren’t forced on you—in fact, there isn’t even a wine list—and there’s something for everyone on the shelves here. Can’t decide? Ask for assistance from resident wine guru Ottara Pyne if you need it. 1041/21 Phloen Chit Rd., 082-096-0281 10/15 Convent Rd., 02-235-2777

Appeasing both whiskey and gin lovers, this two-story rooftop nails the drinks and the twinkling skyline views. Downstairs evokes the fancier side of Victorian-era London with black marble, dark wood, wingback chairs, and brass details, while the al fresco rooftop takes a contemporary turn with plenty of ferns and cushioned seats with built-in air-con.

Kangkao

PLAYROOM Set atop her crowd-pleasing French restaurant Stage, former Robuchon chef Jay Sangsingkaew welcomes you to Playroom, a swanky, incredibly seductive speakeasy recalling a posh Russian cocktail den. Expect a curated selection of sensually themed drinks, ranging from a photogenic mix that consists of Ketel One vodka, passion fruit, lychee, lime juice, sugar, and egg white to a bourbon-based drink combining mezcal, yuzu, honey, and cranberry.

BAR YARD Buzzing on any night of the week, this tropical rooftop bar hits the sweet spot with its relaxed backyard barbecue vibe and sub-B300 cocktails. Expect to be surrounded by gaggles of international school socialites imbibing tropical and tiki-influenced libations to a soundtrack of chilled house and electronic music.

2/F, 359/2-3 Sukhumvit Soi 63, 080-278-7808

STELLA Stella

DUMBO Ari-Saphan Kwai’s resident rooftop bar may not offer imposing views of the city skyline, but it makes up for its lack of height with quality live jazz on weekdays, affordable drinks (about B100 for a beer), and BTS-facing, alfresco seating.

When the Capella Bangkok finally flung open its doors, it brought with it this riverside dessertand-cocktail boudoir. Marked by opulent chinoiserie—think intricate frescos and iridescent silks—the bar serves decadent sweets and cleansing libations that take inspiration from stories of female heroism across Asia. Capella Bangkok, 300/2 Charoenkrung Rd., 02-098-3888

490/5 Phahonyothin Rd., 094-560-7222

TAX BAR

PENTHOUSE BAR + GRILL

A tumbledown commercial building close to Maitri Chit Road is poised to become Bangkok’s hottest new nightlife hub courtesy of the Teens of Thailand/Asia Today crew. On the second floor, you’ll find Tax Bar, where the cocktails feature homemade vinegars, special infusions, and even Guinness.

The Park Hyatt’s showpiece steakhouse and rooftop bar oozes casual class. Order a refreshing cocktail from their surprisingly pocket-friendly seltzer-based menu or make a night of it with a bottle from their extensive wine list. 34-36/F, Park Hyatt, 88 Wireless Rd., 02-011-7480

A cocktail bar that opened in 2021? What a novelty. This hidden bar, located on the second, third, and fourth floors of Wynn Wood Florist on Soi Thonglor, was meant to open in April, but, well, you know. Finally, you can check out what it has to offer. Like, for instance, a botanical-driven bar on the second floor and a gin room on the third. 2-4/F, Wynn Wood Florist, 61/2 Thonglor Soi 1 (Sukhumvit Soi 55), 08-2646-0949

37/F, Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park, 199 Sukhumvit Soi 22, 02-059-5555

40/F, Kimpton Maa-Lai, 78 Soi Tonson, 02056-9999

Designed by Ashley Sutton (Sing Sing Theater; Iron Balls), this long-awaited bar finally launched at the Avani Riverside last year. Fashioned as a clandestine, long-lost hideout for elites, the opulent tunnel-shaped bar sits somewhere between retro space station and Aztec bunker, creating a scene that promises to only get more fantastical with regular drag, fashion, and theater shows.

Thai street artist Benzilla marks comeback with exhibition at RCB Galleria

The North Face opens first concept store in Southeast Asia at CentralWorld

Southeast Asia’s first Gundam Base flagship store has opened inside Siam Center at the first-floor “Ideaopolis” space (yes, that’s what it’s called). The store occupies a 362sqm area featuring exclusive items and limited-edition merch for all Gunpla fans. The Japanese toy brand’s new store is a collaboration between Bandai Namco Asia and Thai importer Dream Toy, which brings in special Gunpla collections, including limited-edition merch, toy vehicles, and model kits.

Parinya Sirisinsuk, a.k.a. Benzilla, famed for the threeeyed alien character LOOOK, is back after a seven-year hiatus, and his most recent exhibition sees him progressing beyond street art at RCB Galleria. Running from Nov 27-Dec 31, “Midnight Call” displays artwork he created during the lockdown with newfound techniques, such as die-cutting on canvas and stencil work, as well as his tried-and-true methods of painting and spray painting on canvas, sculptures, and skateboards. Admission is free, but guests are allowed inside only in limited numbers at a time.

Popular American outdoor apparel brand The North Face has opened a concept store in CentralWorld— the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. The store features an “Urban Exploration” theme, boasting a collection from well-renowned designers like Kazuki Kuraishi (Urban Utility), Andrea Jiapei Li (Urban Elegance), and Hans Chyi (Urban Sprawl). Drop by the store to feast your eyes on their fashion-forward collection and snap shots of their glitzy light installation inspired by Thailand’s highest mountain, Doi Inthanon.

BOOZY AFFAIR

BACK TO BASICS

ALL ABOUT THE GANJ

It’s brunch o’clock at Bardo every weekend

Amerigo Sesti’s new Italian restaurant to open this December

A cannabis-focused restaurant brings that sticky icky to Bang Rak

Looking for a vibey brunch place in Sathorn? Check out Bardo Social Bar and Bistro. The artsy Mediterranean-style bistro is rolling out a free-flow boozy brunch that’s perfect for friends and family (if your family is cool, at least). The restaurant is offering a free-flow brunch package (B790/two hours) during the weekends only (Sat-Sun 11am-4pm). Indulge in all your favorites like eggs Benedict, burgers, wraps, and their Mediterranean-leaning a la carte dishes. Reservations are recommended.

You may know Amerigo Sesti as head chef of fine dining stalwart J’aime by Jean-Michel Lorain and for his spectacular handle of top-level French cuisine. His latest project Antito, however, revisits his Italian roots. Located on the 14th floor of the Eastin Grand Hotel Sathorn, this zesty bar-restaurant promises creative Italian cuisine without compromising authenticity—soul fool reinterpreted through the lens of a chef of Sesti’s caliber. Though the dishes remain under wraps at press time, we do know that Antito is set to open in early December. Stay tuned for more.

Taking over the space formerly occupied by Casa Sapparod, Gancharoen puts the spotlight on, you guessed it, cannabis. Chef Chandler Schultz, formerly of Le Cochon Blanc, swaps smoked meats for, well, another kind of smoking, using Mae Hong Son-grown cannabis in an array of Thai and western dishes. Strain-specific terpenes (aromatic compounds) show up in several items, including OG Kush (earthy and spicy) in the dipping sauce that pairs with their cannabis tempura, White Widow (fruity) in the chocolate “Canna-Cotta,” and Thai Stick (green and resinous) in the cheesecake.

Chef Chumpol also drops insights about the nutritional benefits of the chosen ingredients, from chili’s metabolism-boosting capsaicin to the inflammation-reducing power of turmeric. 131 Sukhumvit 53, 95-141-5524, 02-059-0433-4 Exclusively for Citi Credit Card members Get a complimentary dish valued THB 1,250 when spending via Citi Credit Card (limit 1 dish /card /table /sales slip) 1 Jan ’21 – 31 Dec ’22

Maison Bleue

NEW AND NOTED

Brooklyn-born Okonomi lands in Bangkok with new spot in Thonglor

Coffee, food, and fashion collide at this unique collaboration

Maison Bleue brings Parisian chic and next-level brioche to Phrom Phong

Okonomi is minimal in every sense of the word. The fan base is anything but. Once you make your way past the Instagram hordes, you’ll find yourself in a quaint, mint-green house, where the menu embraces the concept of ichiju sansai, a breakfast staple offering balanced nutrients in one meal. There are two options for this (B550 each): Misozuke Hamachi, featuring miso-marinated hamachi (amberjack), and Konbujime Madai, with marinated red seabream. Each comes with a soup, pickled vegetables, rice, and tamago (Japanese omelet). There are fun, fusion-y options for those who want to venture beyond, plus unique matcha drinks, too.

Pronounced “Cee-degree,” Siam Paragon’s buzzing CDGRE brings together celebrity chef Gaggan Anand, chef twins Thomas and Mathias Suhring, and Anupong “Pint” Kuttikul of sneaker house Carnival for a collaboration unlike any this city has seen. They each bring a bit of what they do or love most to the table: good coffee, a Europe-spanning menu, and fresh streetwear. While Anand handles the coffee, the Suhring brothers have crafted a menu that sets them free of the boundaries from their Michelinstarred establishment. For example, the signature “Brotzeit” picnic (B880), a feast of cured meats, pork rillette, cheese, homemade spreads, pickles, and hearty bread.

In need of some joie de vivre? Maison Bleue, located where Karmakamet Diner once stood, offers warm Parisian vibes with decadent treats to match. While the Karmakamet shop is still open, inside you’ll find this new spot reminiscent of a charming French cafe, imbued with shades of blue and walls lined with potted lavender. The brioche is the star here. Order a cafe Viennois (lungo topped with whipped cream, B160) and try it in the classic French toast, (B295), brioche soaked in Tahitian vanilla custard and topped with almond crumble, almond tuile, homemade creme fraiche, and berries, or go for the heartier brunch and dinner options.

El Willy Spanish Kitchen

TABLE TALK

HAOMA Shanghai’s best-known Spanish restaurant comes to Bangkok

Go nowhere to find this vibrant Talad Noi tea shop

All-day dining from a donut pioneer

Globe-trotting Spanish chef Guillermo “Willy” Trullas Moreno introduced Shanghai to what he calls “sexy tapas,” a concept built on his quirky-cool approach and larger-than-life personality. Now, he’s bringing that vibe to Bangkok at El Willy Spanish Kitchen. Prop up around the open kitchen and observe the charismatic Moreno cranking out family-style, made-to-share set menus (B2,000/B3,000) full of flavorful options like arroz mariscos, a generous portion of mixed seafood paella topped with dollops of aioli and fresh lemon. A la carte options will soon be on the horizon, and both set menus offer wine pairing (B1,200/five glasses).

Citizen Tea Canteen of Nowhere joins a small handful of tea rooms in Bangkok, offering nation-spanning local brews from Songkhla in the south to Chiang Rai in the north (milk teas from B120). The idea was to “empower underdog culture,” according to shop co-owner Saran Yenpanya, an artist who also owns the 56th Studio design house. The teas only come from Thai provinces and are brewed meticulously with a siphon for the best consistency, aroma, and taste possible. The shophouse’s uber-vibrant decor, meanwhile, includes handmade silkscreens of flowers, tigers, and Chinese characters on the walls, while local handicrafts are displayed in a corner of the room.

Decadent donut brand Drop by Dough has opened a third branch on the first floor of glitzy EmQuartier, with a wine and dine option for the first time. Here you’ll find a range of savory comfort food on the menu—specifically donut sandwiches. Popular options include a savory donut sandwich with rosemary scrambled eggs and prosciutto (B300) and a tamagoyaki sando(nut), which features a grilled Japanese omelet with wasabi mayo and tonkatsu sauce (B275). The menu goes beyond donut creations with steaks, pasta, rice bowls, and more. To drink, you can choose from coffee, tea, sodas and, yes, wine.

Centara to unveil overhauled luxury resort on Samui this December

Hua Hin gets a beachfront cocktail bar you actually want to drink at

The Centara Reserve Samui, opening Dec 1 on Chaweng beach, represents the hotel group’s first property in its luxe new Reserve series. The property features a fresh collection of 184 rooms, pool suites, and beachfront pool villas— including the 501-sq-meter Reserve Ocean Pool Villa, which boasts private beach access. You’ll also find the brand’s first Reserve Spa Cenvaree, an upgraded version of their trademark spa, as well as six restaurants and bars venues, including a gin bar and bespoke dining services. The resort claims to be 100-percent plastic-free and even converts food waste into biogas for use in the pantry. Rates start at B5,900++/night.

When The Standard Hua Hin opens this December, it will also introduce Hua Hin to something of a novelty for the upmarket beach town: a cocktail bar. And a good one at that. Praca sees a small heritage bungalow set on the beach transformed into an intimate spot for late afternoon drinks, with indoor and outdoor seating and a very good soundtrack to boot. While the menu hasn’t been finalized, you can expect clever riffs on classics, like a peanut-infused Old Fashioned, and beach-appropriate drinks, including plays on the pina colada and Aperol spritz. Resort guests can also score drinks at the poolfront Lido Beach Bar.

CHIANG MAI

BANGKOK

The Four Seasons goes local with new travel experiences

Uncle Roger to bring the laughs to Bangkok in June

For a couple of years now, experiential travel has dominated the luxury tourism industry. The Four Seasons Chiang Mai is taking that up a notch with Chaan Baan, a new venue promising immersive cultural experiences in the Mae Rim district, where the property is located. Named after the outdoor terrace attached to traditional Thai homes, Chaan Baan has something for the whole family: plant rice shoots, spin the potter’s wheel, dye fabrics, bathe the water buffaloes, learn how to cook khanom krok (circular, pansteamed coconut and rice cakes), or peruse the herb and vegetable garden.

Raised up by a devastating critique of another chef’s egg fried rice to internet fame, Malaysianborn standup comedian Nigel Ng is hitting the big time. And now he’s bringing his mala-spice comedy to Bangkok. Better known as Uncle Roger, the cranky Chinese caricature he assumes on his YouTube Channel of the same name, Ng announced Bangkok among a slew of dates for next year’s Haiyaa World Tour. No venue was announced, but his show will take place June 19. To score seats or get more information, visit nigelngcomedy.com.

the last word | a late bloomer with big ambition

This 75-year-old artist just hosted his first solo exhibition For over 60 years, Pira Ogawa, now 75, has been freehand sketching as a form of self-therapy to treat tinnitus and anxiety. But it wasn’t until recently that his art entered the public domain after his son secretly submitted his work for entry to a Bangkok illustration fair, landing him two exhibitions in rapid succession. We caught up with him to talk about working at midnight, his fondness for geometry, and how his private work became public. By Alisha Pawa

C

ould you describe yourself in three words? I am hard-working, dedicated, and I give 100 percent to my work. I don’t give up easily.

When did your passion for sketching and painting begin? Since childhood, I’ve loved geometry. I always enjoyed joining lines and circles together [and watching them] beautifully overlap into a geometric structure. I started using tools like compasses, markers, and geometric rulers to ensure my lines were crisp. Slowly my passion for geometry turned into a drive for producing art. [Now] I pick up my marker and let my imagination take over. Sometimes I surprise myself when I look at the outcome.

Tell us about your first solo exhibition, Around the Clock. My work was only recently shown to the world, when my son and daughter-in-law secretly submitted it to this year’s Bangkok Illustration Fair. My son is also an artist and he decided to submit my work along with his. My work was selected to be a part of a group exhibition at the BACC [Bangkok Art and Culture Center], and then I got my first solo exhibition, Around The Clock, at River City Bangkok, which depicted my journey towards recovery. Until then, I’d kept my artwork within my own four walls, or sometimes I would give a piece to a friend or my doctor. This is the first time my work has been exposed to the general public. What does your work routine look like? I go to sleep at 9 or 10pm, wake up at midnight, and start my sketching because it’s quiet at that time and I’m able to concentrate. I work until dawn, have my breakfast, and then go to sleep again. It usually takes me two or three days to finish one piece. What does art mean to you? When I feel disturbed, depressed, or think it’s too noisy [because of my tinnitus], I just take out my frustration on paper by sketching because it gives me a sense of comfort. It’s like medicine for me. When I’m able to construct designs, I feel a sense of accomplishment. I want to keep going like this because this is my passion, and it makes me happy. Art has become a form of self-therapy. What are your thoughts on the art scene in Thailand? The art industry in Thailand has been showing more progress than ever. In the past, for your work to be recognized, you had to win an art contest and only then could your work be placed in an exhibition. The public used to only be open to realistic work or Thai traditional art, too. Nowadays, there is greater diversity, and people seem to appreciate a wider variety of artistic styles. I hope to see more places for artists to show their work so people of all generations can easily approach it. What are you currently working on? Last week, I submitted work that will be part of an exhibition in Japan called Unknown Asia 2021, along with 10 other Thai artists. I’m excited that my work is going to be exhibited there. I was selected by two viewers who sent me a certificate of appreciation, which made me feel really proud. What does the future hold? I definitely hope to participate in more exhibitions. Next year, I will be working on a new project with Maytas Music Studio. So, definitely excited for that!
