A checklist of BK Magazine’s most important discoveries this week The all-in-one “spider” card will launch in October, apparently After years of talk it seems the Mangmoom Card, which will enable commuters to travel by train, bus and boat with a single ticket, is getting the hurry-up. Latest word from the Ministry of Transport is the card will be issued for use in October, initially covering the Airport Link and BTS Purple, Blue and Green lines with boat and train services to follow. Forgive us if we’re not holding our breath. Blaq Lyte is the party spot Thonglor’s been waiting for We haven’t seen Bad Motel this popping since its 2013 heyday. Now the party crew behind pop-up events everywhere from Ari to RCA have taken over the second floor and filled it with neon vibes, laptop electro and people who say words like “lit” and “turnt” in real-life conversation. See www.fb.com/blaqlyte. Alain Passard is coming to cook in Bangkok Known for pushing the boundaries of vegetable-focused fine dining, the mastermind behind the three-Michelin-starred L’Arpege in Paris and the chef voted #1 in the world by his Michelin-studded peers in Le Chef magazine will conduct cooking classes (B5,900) and chef’s table dinners (B12,500) from Jun 14-17. The seats at Issaya Cooking Studio are limited; claim yours at booking@issayastudio.com. Texas-born smoothie chain Jamba Juice has arrived With some 800 branches across the US and 40-plus international stores, Jamba is the latest grab-and-go healthy-eating import. Aside from juices, they’re also known for a line of wraps, sandwiches and salads. Now blending on the G/F of Siam Paragon. At the other end of the health spectrum, we still have no confirmed opening date for IHOP, the American pancakes specialist we were originally told would open in the same mall last year. Charoenkrung’s third coming has begun In the run-up to Duangrit’s Warehouse 30 opening, the area is gearing up to become a true hipster paradise. The Little Market people have revealed they’re working on a second project, while next door to 80/20, new cocktail bar Tropic City is also under way. Don’t know what the fuss is about? Drop by the official opening of FooJohn this Fri, May 26.

upfront HOT OR NOT
Hot: Korean noodles Not: Korean frying pans Bangkok has just welcomed a new restaurant from that trusted purveyor of quality, Psy of “Gangnam Style” fame. Psy Ramen (see page 21) opens at RCA’s shiny new temple to all things Korean, Show DC, at a time when the nation is up in arms over gao lee cookery, namely the Korea King frying pan—subject of a class-action lawsuit from a group of Thais conned into thinking the aluminum coated pan was worth B18,000. Price right now on eBay, brand new: B1,700.
Hot: Pandas
Not: Plastic balls
We need to talk about that white plastic ball installation at Central Embassy. They said it was going to be a sea of balls. We were promised one million of the things to swim in, hide under and embrace our inner five years old while feeding our creative souls. The reality is less spectacular than a kiddies’ ball pit, with just a quarter (roughly 250,000) of the promised one million balls actually making their way to Bangkok. Bring back the chubby pandas, we say.
Hot: oBike
Not: Pun Pun
The ride-sharing war has started all over again—but this time extended to bicycles. No sooner had Singaporean cycling scheme oBike launched in Bangkok than the BMA was out warning us all that it could be a scam. Claims which have nothing whatsoever to do with saving some shred of dignity for its own, universally unused Pun Pun bike scheme.
Hot: Bangkok Biennale Not: Venice Biennale Believe it or not, Thailand has a habit of doing rather well at the Venice Biennale. When not wallowing in saccharine countryside cliches like 2013’s exhibition of water buffalo and pretty colored yarn, we’re capable of breathtaking installations such as Arin Rungjang’s mesmerizing Golden Teardrop (pictured). So it’s about time Bangkok got its own art biennial, and if the first signs of Bangkok Art Biennale 2018 are anything to go by, they’re doing this thing properly, with a list of the world’s very best curators roped onboard.
THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

INTERVIEW This month marks seven years since the bloody crackdown on protesters at Ratchaprasong intersection, as well as three years since the military took over political power in Thailand. Punsak Srithep, 50, a taxi driver whose 17-year-old son was killed in the 2010 protests, was among a group of bereaved parents who last week gathered to make merit for their departed children. The peaceful event at Wat Pratumwanaram was heavily attended by both plainclothes and uniformed police who videotaped media interviews with the parents. We managed to grab a few words with Punsak away from the gaze of police. What are you currently working on regarding your son’s death? What’s your next step? The DSI has taken over the case. Everything about the shooting was unusual, and they are trying to find out why he was shot. There were hundreds of military officials at the protests, but there was only one bullet shot at him, so we are trying to find out what may have driven that one military official to shoot my son. In accordance with regulations, the DSI has sent the case to local police in order to be taken to the court. May 22 marks three years of military rule. Do you have anything to say to Prayuth Chan-ocha? N o, b e c a u s e h e ’ s s o m e w h a t involved in my son’s case and I’m not supposed to be saying anything to him. At the moment , everything, all the cases, not just mine but other people whose relatives got shot, have been paused
because some super-powerful people are involved and they are trying to shut down these cases. Everyone who lost their family members in 2010, myself included, are now just waiting for the election so our cases can progress. Do you think Thais are more subservient as a result of the 2010 crackdown? Yes, because we know we can be killed without any repercussions. The military is trying to put pressure on us. Look at the Dao Din group [a collective of activist students at Khon Kaen University]. Now their leader, Pai, has been arrested and the whole group has gone quiet. The current government uses fear by arresting people here and there.
a big following. For example, the people who protest about the building of the coal plant are not brave enough to actually move their protest to Bangkok. Nobody really dares to do anything at the moment. My friends and I also only do very small, quiet protests. I still have to go to the court on May 24 in relation to small protests I’ve been involved with. Interview by Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj
Two hours after this interview took place, Punsak and his crew were arrested for staging a mini protest on the Skywalk between BTS Siam and Chitlom. The mini protest was a mime, mimicking the event that happened in May 2010.
What do you think it would take to bring people out in protest again? I don’t know. There are some mini protests but they never really gain

And once you’ve cashed in on the drinks deals here, House on Sathorn’s to-die-for cocktails are just across the courtyard. ALL-YOU-CAN-DRINK IZAKAYA Salarymen know how to drink. What’s more, they know how to drink on the cheap, and Bangkok’s best Japanese taverns are happy to provide.
Kansai Izakaya This retro, warehouse-like spot does all the izakaya staples, from takoyaki to yakitori. The highlight, though, has to be the ice-cold Asahi, which you can get free-flow at a super-cheap price. The deal: B299/2 hours (Asahi draft beer only) and another B399/2 hours for food buffet, available after 8:30pm and before 10:30pm.
Katsu Shin This poky restaurant off Silom Road is the perfect spot for a marathon drinking session. With its dark wood, narrow shop-house location, long bar and dim lighting, the place has the cozy, tavern-like atmosphere of a true izakaya. The katsu (from B240/set) is one of the best in town—almost an inch thick, not the least bit oily and perfectly tender— and the high-balls just taste so much better in the midst of drunken salarymen. The deal: B600/2 hours (draft beer, sake, soju peach, whiskey soda) from 6-10pm. 9/1 Silom Soi 6, 02-237-3073. Open Mon-Sat 11am-2pm, 6-11pm; Sun 11:30am-2:30pm, 5:30-10:30pm

Eating green
TCEB's Farm to Functions Project Created by TCEB’s MICE Capabilities Development Department, Farm to Functions is the first project in the world inviting both government and private sectors to support the economy of local communities. Since launching, it has joined forces with 13 MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) partners and the Sampran Model to encourage MICE entrepreneurs to support organic agricultural products produced by local communities. The project links organic farms to kitchens in hotels and conference centers, delivering healthy food to clients to help sharpen their competitive advantages and enhance the public image of MICE entrepreneurs and Thailand as a whole. This results in a network of three parties working in
harmony to drive the economy. Mutual benefits are duly generated, bringing sustainability to development of business, society and communities, from upstream to downstream.
So far, the project has generated over B12 million per year for more than 300 farming families in the country, alongside 300 tons of organic rice orders to 18 participating venues.
How to make your meals more sustainable and safe
Stay in Season
Go Vegan
Grow Your Own
Stay Wholesome
Be the Chef
When fruits and vegetables are in season it means that it is the optimum time of the year for them to grow. Because of this, buying inseason produce guarantees that you don’t contribute to an over-mechanized farming process that is ultimately very harmful to the environment.
Eating meat is actually extremely damaging to the environment, whether it’s the greenhouse gases emitted by livestock or the energy and resources required to raise animals. In fact, by simply going vegan you can cut your total carbon footprint in half.
It’s always good to reduce the distance from where your food is sourced to your plate, since this reduces the overall energy required to make your meal. Growing your own garden, then, is the ultimate shortcut. Short of that, look for Thai produce when you go food shopping.
Eating “whole” foods means choosing to eat an apple instead of an apple tart. or strawberries instead of strawberry ice-cream. Not only is this a whole lot better for your health, it also guarantees food that is sustainable and naturally suited for our body.
Simply cooking your own food instead of dining out can make a huge difference. Not only do you get to control your portion size, but you’re also fully in charge of which ingredients go into your food and aware of which leftovers can be kept or composted.

The karaoke dive bar to end all karaoke dive bars is mushrooming all around town. We’ll plump for the original venue, on the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 53, where in our experience they’re most accommodating of non-Japanese. Bottles of Beer This friendly bottle shop-cum-bar has one of the best craft beer selections in Bangkok, at some of the best prices. The Singaporean owner wanted to create a place where people can feel comfortable just rocking up, pulling a few bottles from the fridge and kicking back. The deal: If you buy six bottles you get wholesale prices, which most often sit at B150-200—that's a steal compared to most bars in town. MALAYSIA
Future City Barely half an hour from the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur is Putrajaya, a planned city that feels a world away. By Theerada Moonsiri
Masjid Putra
SkyRides Festivals Park
K
Ellis Calvin
nown as the federal administrative center of Malaysia, Putrajaya also prides itself on cutting-edge architecture, a full line-up of outdoor activities and enchanting green spaces.
Picture-perfect landscape Back in 1999, the seat of government was shifted from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya during the tenure of prime minister Mahathir bin Mohamad. Well planned and aesthetically pleasing, the new city takes its design cues from a variety of foreign influences, from the wide boulevards of Paris’s Avenue des Champs-Elysees to Islamic architecture, manifest in the Persian-style rose-tinted granite of Masjid Putra to the massive gateway of the Perbadanan Putrajaya Complex. The latter also comes equipped with a deck that offers a grandstand view of the symmetrical city. Putrajaya’s eight bridges are another highlight, displaying a variety of architectural styles, such as the Seri Perdana Bridge, with its many shades of yellow Moorish arches crossing over the city’s man-made lake, or the Seri Wawasan Bridge, a modernist cable-stayed bridge that offers an impressive light show after sunset.
Adrenaline rush Putrajaya might be labeled a government center, but there’s plenty on offer for outdoor enthusiasts. Get your sweat on and push your limits at Putrajaya Challenge Park (www. ppj.gov.my, entry RM6 [B48]), which comprises a skate park, mountain bike trails, and an indoor rock climbing gym that claims to be the largest in Asia. For fans of the Ninja Warrior TV series, SkyRides Festivals Park (www.fb.com/ skyridesfestivals, free admission) challenges you with its SkyWarrior, a seven-station obstacle course over water that challenges both your body and mind. In addition, there are also plenty of water activities on offer at Putrajaya Lake Recreation Center (www.cruisetasikputrajaya.com) such as kayaking and canoeing in the lake where the Formula 1 Powerboat World Championship recently took place.
Taman Botani
Mother of all gardens Putrajaya is now home to state-of-the-art technology, but it was originally envisioned to be a garden city. It lives up to this hype, too, thanks to about 38 percent of the total area dedicated to artificial lakes, wetlands and parks. Make sure you visit Taman Botani (www.tbnsa.gov.my, entry RM3 [B24]), considered Malaysia’s biggest botanical garden, where over 700 species of plants from South America, Africa and Asia reside. Nature trails, cycling paths and tram services allow you to enjoy the 92 hectares of lush greenery at your own pace. Nestled within this park you’ll also find the beautiful Moroccan Pavilion, whose intricate craftsmanship showcases Moorish architecture of the sort found in places like Cordoba and Granada, Spain.
UPCOMING
Tip Although Putrajaya is a largely dry city, nearby Cyberjaya is another relatively new development that aims to be the Silicon Valley of Malaysia. Here, you'll find bars and restaurants that offer booze throughout the night. It’s about 10 minutes away by car—using Grab is probably your best bet.

Along with a backdrop that will rock your Instagram feed, most rooms also come with a bath or outdoor Jacuzzi, as well as a grand seven-foot bed. Other onsite facilities include Kokulo Beach Club with all-day live DJs, Spa QaQula and a picture-perfect, free-form pool. Rates start at only B2,650/night for a deluxe poolside room, inclusive of breakfast for two, for bookings made by May 31, applicable for stays through Sep 30.

Mermaid Avenue Located at the beachside Seenspace mall, Sretsis Mermaid Bar and Shop (Hua Hin Soi 35, Liebwang Nue Rd., 092-350-0035) showcases the Thai fashion brand's beachwear, while also serving up funky tropical cocktails and mocktails designed by Bangkok speakeasy Sugar Ray. Launched way back in 2002, Sretsis is one of the country’s top names in fashion, known for its designs with an adventurous, bohemian and sweet edge—a style reflected in the new opening’s tropical murals and pastel palette. It joins other recent arrivals at the mall like Duangrit Bunnag's Hotel Bocage, Isaan-Thai restaurant DER, customizable pasta bar Yellow Mellow, dessert cafe Burning Daylight and burger counter Bon Fire.

GRAND OPENING ON THE COVER
Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach
Phi Phi island
1 COVER_New 1.indd 1
Overview: The property that stood as The Merlin Beach Hotel just south of Patong for 16 years has had a complete revamp and rebrand, though the private strip of beach remains a highlight. Rooms and Facilities: The resort is huge—414 rooms huge. In total, there are eight room types, which are all spacious if minimal. Each comes with a balcony and bathtub, plus amenities from THANN. Of the three massive swimming pools, one has its own artificial waterfall, one its own bar and another a kids’ area and slide. A huge green lawn stretches across one side of Tri-Trang Beach (locally known as Merlin Beach), where you can plop down for the day. Perhaps most exciting are the private beach's prime scuba-diving and snorkeling opportunities. Other activities include morning yoga, muay Thai, kayaking and paddleboarding, excursions to the nearby Similan islands or a visit to the modest spa, which features eight Sino-Portuguese-inspired rooms. Dining: There are a whopping eight F&B options across the property, from Thai cuisine at Thai Pantry to Italian at D.O.C.G, and seafood at Beach Grill, which does a huge buffet every Thursday night accom-

panied by live saxophone. Phuket Coffee Co. serves freshly baked cakes and pastries, coffees and teas from Chiang Rai, and the resort’s own flavors of frozen yogurt in collaboration with Nommy. Healthier options are available at Wellness and nightly live music at The Lounge Bar. Rave: The beach here is only accessible by hotel guests. Newbies to scuba-diving can take a three-hour introductory course (currently complimentary for guests staying three nights or more). Stay longer if you want full SSI certification. It's also a great base for visiting other beaches: a kayak to the quiet Freedom Beach takes around 20 minutes.
December
Rant: Some corridors feel a bit dated. The place is huge so don't expect much solitude (the kids' pool is especially noisy), while the spa also requires early booking. Rates: From B3,600/night for the Superior Lagoon Pool View, all the way up to B12,200 for the Royal Suite. Add B500 for a full breakfast spread, which is totally worth it. 99 Muen-Ngoen Rd., Tri-Trang Beach, Patong. Phuket, 076-335-300. bit.ly/2pduG37

THAILAND TRUST MARK
The DITP’s new label offers confidence to those seeking the best of Thai products and services.
For top notch, high quality T-Mark certified products, look out for the T-Mark logo at Gourmet Market, available now at Emporium & Emquartier
WHAT IS THAILAND TRUST MARK? Consumers are now flooded with so much information, it’s sometimes hard to know who and what to trust. The Thailand Trust Mark aims to bring much needed clarity to the kingdom’s many goods and services. Launched by the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), Ministry of Commerce, the label is awarded exclusively to brands that have passed a rigorous standardized benchmark.
HOW T MARK DEFINES QUALITY Quality, under the benchmark of the Thailand Trust Mark, means more than just reliability. The T Mark not only ensures that the products and services deliver on their promises, manufacturers must also possess internationally recognized manufacturing standards, strong environmental management procedures, socially responsible policies and fair labor practices. Thus, with the T Mark symbol, we can be assured of trusted quality in both the local supply chain as well as the actual outcome—the product itself. The T Mark has been rolled out across many sectors: food, industrial manufacturing, lifestyle and fashion, hospitals, health and beauty, as well as international education. No matter the field, the Thailand Trust Mark guarantees the best for consumers and also helps local brands gain more exposure and trust internationally.

THREE T MARK BRANDS WE LOVE THE CREATIVE CRAFTSMANSHIP OF AYODHAYA
THE UNFORGETTABLE SCENT OF PANPURI
Ayodhya is the quintessence of Thainess in home decor. “Our philosophy is believing in ‘heart-made passion,’” says founder Pawinee Sukhasvasti. “We put our heart into everything we do. This is what makes us, Thais, truly unique. You can call it the Thai spirit.” The result? Elegant vases, trays, frames, baskets, lamps and furniture made using hemp, cotton, reused newspapers and water hyacinth. Ayodhya has Thailand’s environment in mind too. Water hyacinth is a weed that can grow to block waterways. It was back in 1994 that Pawinee began research on making use of the plant to benefit rural development. This led to the line of intricatelydesigned furniture and home decor items using water hyacinth. The project also created supplementary income for hill tribe villagers, who were incentivized to clear the waterways and sell their harvest. This all combines to ensure Ayodhaya blends a contemporary touch and traditional Thai handicrafts, making items that are beautiful and relevant for the modern home, while supporting communities throughout the kingdom.
Established in 2003, skincare and scents brand Panpuri stands out from the crowd with its line of high-quality, organic wellness products with exotic scents from all four corners of the globe. Panpuri uses organically-grown plants and herbs found in Thailand alongside rare ingredients such as Madagascan vanilla and pure essential oil from Moroccan roses. Panpuri products are also hypoallergenic and pollutant free: no parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, silicone or mineral oils. Even the packaging is done using paper that hasn’t been bleached and eco-friendly soy ink. It is this meticulous attention to detail that enabled Panpuri to conquer the global spa industry, with its organic products now supplied to spas in 22 countries around the world. The numerous international awards that Panpuri has received over the years— DEmark, Good Design Award, Pentawards and Best Thai Brand Award—are testament to its world-class excellence. With Panpuri, beauty really does come from within.

THE HEADY FLAVORS OF BLUE SPICE Over the last 36 years, global restaurant chain Blue Elephant has been serving up royal Thai cuisine at their restaurants in Paris, London Bangkok and Phuket under the culinary supervision of Chef Nooror Sommany Steppe. But beyond the restaurants, Chef Nooror also launched Blue Spice, featuring items like seasonings, curry pastes, stir-fry sauces, rice, noodles, coconut cream and snacks. The Blue Elephant brand can now be found at outlets in over 20 countries around the world, offering superlative quality and the taste of home-cooked Thai cuisine. They use the best raw produce and numerous natural ingredients sourced in Thailand from the Royal Project Foundation, which helps farmers in mountainous areas grow pesticidefree products. Blue Elephant products are also free of MSG, preservatives or artificial coloring. The line is also continually expanding every year, with recent additions such as a signature curry paste and a new street food collection featuring a Thai fish cakes cooking set and a sweet sticky rice dessert kit—all of which are certified according to stringent HACCP, GMP, Halal and BRC standards. www.blueelephant.co.th

Interior architects PHTAA Living Design worked their magic over the ground floor of a minute building tucked down Thonglor Soi 20, giving it a look which, like the suits, shirts and ties (B1,200-1,300) on sale here, is at once modern yet timeless. YOGA
Water Boarding First there was beer yoga, now there’s stand-up paddle board yoga. SUP Yoga Thailand wants you to wade into the Lake Taco wakeboard park this Jun 11 to try doing yoga on an oversized surfboard. Taking cues from similar events across the world, from Tulum in Mexico to Ragusa in Italy, the idea is that doing yoga on a stand-up paddle board improves your balance while throwing a bit more fun into the mix. Incorporating aspects of surfing, SUP yoga is said to require a little more focus on your core than regular yoga, while also posing a challenge mentally if you want to avoid taking a quick dip. The 60-minute class is costs B1,500 per person and includes one hour’s open paddle boarding afterward. Bookings at www.fb.com/thailandsupyoga or 087-794-6543.

SUGAR & CREAM
Decked out with a mural of a surfer and retro bricNEW! a-brac, Everything Under the Sun serves up a decidedly tropical vibe, reflected in the owner’s carefully curated selection of Hawaiian shirts. You’ll also find some cool print tees, blindingly colorful ‘80s-style shorts, trucker caps and the odd brand name (on our last visit, we came across pieces from Margaret Howell, Stussy and Carhartt). It’s mostly menswear, but there’s plenty for women to dig out too. Shirts and shorts start from around B800 each.
This semi-secret store on the second floor of Zudrangma Records is home to some very distinctive vintage items from all over the world. Find Hawaiian shirts that are actually from Hawaii (starting B600), cool old jewelry and a wide variety of other classy vintage clothes.
Vintage ladies who love something fun and unique will love Sugar & Cream’s amazing selection of maxi skirts, dresses and accessories like hats, scarves, belts and jewelry. The prices aren’t too horrible (think B1,200 for a dress) despite being in a mall. If you enjoy patterns and bright colors, this is a place you don’t want to miss.

RESTAURANT
Soba It's Good Coming from a family that makes soba noodles for the Japanese royal family, chef Mizuho Nagao brings his 23 years of expertise to Bangkok at Soba Factory. All by hand, the chef kneads and cuts a fresh batch of soba every day using 80- to 100-percent buckwheat. The result is al-dente soba, which is recommended to be eaten within a few minutes of serving. You can either have it cold (from B290), hot (from B290) or with tempura (B455). The other side of the restaurant is dedicated to yakitori (grilled chicken skewers, from B60), made from organic local chicken. Try the tsukune (minced chicken, B75) and the house-made fresh tofu (B300). Lobby Level, Marriott Marquis, Sukhumvit Soi 22, 02-059-5999

Local roaster Ceresia now hosts workshops at its Silom cafe to give beginners foundation knowledge about specialty coffee. Led by roaster-owner Garin “Bret” Asavaroengchai, the threehour session starts with a short lecture on the different types of coffee beans, coffee cultivation and cycle, bean processing, roast levels and grind sizes. Afterwards, you get to learn hands-on about coffee flavors and aroma through basic cupping and coffee brewing skills using the filter method. See www. ceresiacoffeeroasters.com for the class schedule—sign up for Thai or English (B2,000/person with a maximum of seven people/class) at ceresiacoffee@gmail.com. Private classes are also available for a group of four or more. Tisco Tower, 48/2 Sathorn Rd., 098-251-4327. BTS Sala Daeng
Known for its big slabs of premium imported beef, Rama 4's Italian restaurant Il Fumo has just launched its first tasting menu. But instead of going straight Italian, the menu also incorporates head chef Nelson Amorim's Portuguese roots and culinary background in dishes like prawn barley risotto, and the deconstructed Portuguese egg tart in the form of millefeuille with cinnamon sabayon. Of course, Il Fumo's beautiful beef plays a part. Lean Fassona from Piedmont comes as beef tartare, while French Limousin features as a seriously to-die-for steak. Also expect intense duck-egg tagliatelle with truffle. Six courses sets you back B2,300 while an eight courses costs B2,800. Sommelier Thanakom Mankit's wine pairings start at B1,600 or try a Stuzzichino martini (B490) mixed tableside. 1098/2 Rama 4 Rd., 02-286-8833
Tucked inside the meat-centric restaurant Wild & Co, Black Cabin is Bangkok’s latest hidden bar. This place looks to rekindle the live music spirit of departed nightlife institution Stu-fe, all amid a moody vibe of dark red lighting and faux animals. The partner-owners from Loy Shy music bar in Ratchathewi promise live bands and vinyl-heavy DJ sets with a weekly schedule that sees Tue dedicated to blues, Thu to folk and post-rock, Fri to experimental electronic house, Sat to modern soul and Sun to groovy jazz. Drinks cover a single malts, Thai craft beers (all B220) as well as refreshing signature cocktails, such as the Pink Chandelier (Jameson, creme de cassis, syrup, lime juice, mint leaves and sparkling wine, B380). angkok’s craft beer scene is making the move from illegal underworld business to above-board cottage industry. How? By brewing their beers abroad and importing them back to Thailand. From a handful of names wise to the trick in 2016, the scene has now exploded, with niche local breweries now so popular that you’ll even find them stocked in Family Mart. The list of the city’s top craft brewers keeps getting longer, so if you’re not on the list and you brew your own beer, send us a message at editorial@asia-city.co.th.

One of Thailand’s most famous brewers alongside Stonehead, Mahanakhon and Lamzing has three labels, all of them worth a try: pilsner, white IPA and IPA.
Unless you’re a total Bangkok craft beer newb’, you’ll already know Lamzing, especially their Sticky Mango label with its strong, love-or-hate character. They also have four other labels.
Best known for their traditional English white ale, this label also does a harder-to-find pale ale called Ruk Sud Jai, which means love with all our heart.

This one has six labels, its bestknown being a fruity cream ale called Tuk Tuk. You can now find most Stonehead labels at the Family Mart on the ground floor of Silom’s Holiday Inn.
The law grad who was arrested at the beginning of 2017 for brewing craft beer at his home now serves a legal craft beer called Hustle, a Saison on draft.

Kakigori at Apbo Cafe (B175)
Just opened in Sala Daeng, this cafe from the Nonthaburi-based coffee roasters serves up their own roasts as well as some other creative drinks. They make their sweet potato latte with imported dehydrated Japanese purple sweet potato, resulting in a fibrous character and sweet aroma. We like the bittersweet flavor and a fuller body when it’s topped with an espresso shot.
This far-flung cafe on Ramintra does all of Bangkok’s trending desserts. Taking its inspiration from Japan, Apbo’s treats highlight the use of fruit and veggies, as in the kakigori shaved ice which comes with a topping mae with imported Japanese purple sweet potatoes. They’re now running a six-month pop-up cafe on the fourth floor of Siam Paragon, too.

Owner Nuanwan Supertpanish (also a partner of Laliart coffee) sources chemical-free vegetables from Baan Ka in Ratchaburi and crafts everything in-house, including her various experimental breads, pastries and syrups. Of the variety of comforting soup, the supertasty purple sweet potato option comes highly recommended. Pair it with her homemade bread for perfection. The Yard, 51 Phahon Yothin Soi 5, 089-142-8203

NEW BAR Character Whisky & Cigar Bar As if Anantara Siam’s Aqua weren’t exclusive enough, that same courtyard is now also home to a cozy little cigar lounge. The interior is modeled after the Eastern Oriental Express, the server feels more like a personal butler, and the walk-in cigar room is well stocked. The bar eschews any mixological aspirations in favor of one long list of single malts, from B300 for a glass of Balvenie Doublewood 12 years (and plenty more options under B400), to B1,800 for a Macallan 18 Years Sherry Oak. Character also stocks Glenfarclas, Highland Park, Glenmorangie, Old Pulteney and Ancnoc, all available with different aging lengths and/or cask types. You can also order them as a bottle—such as the Glenmorangie Lasanta (B4,450) or the Balvenie Port Wood 21 years (B25,500). That said, you can order anything you want from Aqua, including a pint of Chang and some nachos. The cigar menu is even more impressive, with notes on each cigar’s origin, format, strength, wrapper, filler, binder, as well as tasting notes, remarks, ratings, price per stick and price per box. Interestingly, that menu is exclusively dedicated to non-Cuban labels: Nicaraguans, Hondurans, Dominicans—even a Jamaican. Inside the walk-in humidor, we did spots some Cohibas (a Cuban
20
brand) but no Partagas. We’ll take that as confirmation connoisseurs are really bored with Havana. To start puffing, there are only a couple options in the B400 range. Access to the “cedar, sweet hay, and hints of burnt toast” offered by a CAO Flathead 660 will set you back B1,150. If it’s the “dried fruits, pepper and cocoa beans” of a Liga Privada Unico Flying Pigs you’re after, count B1,850. And then there’s the atmosphere. The Eastern Oriental theme isn’t original, but it’s well executed, with all the requisite hardwood and leather. The fedora wearing attendant is quick to prep or relight your cigar. Attached to Central Embassy mall’s cool if under-patronized Siwilai boutique, this cafe is one of the more interesting players on Bangkok’s brunch scene. The space, which for two years operated as a branch of Rocket cafe, is a grown-up blend of blond wood, marble and dappled natural light that could wel l be Melbourne or Stockholm. When the weather’s fine, however, you’ll find the best seats out on the terrace with its rare downtown views of greenery courtesy of the British Embassy and Nai Lert Park. Chef Blair Matheson (formerly of Quince) is behind the breakfast-heavy menu that sees the likes of eggs Benedict spruced up with a Sriracha Hollandaise sauce (B350) and jok (Thai-style rice porridge, B210) benefit from hunks of chashulike pork belly. As tasty as those dishes are, we’d opt for the grilled brioche topped with a huge mound of sauteed chicken liver, mushroom,

Established for more than 20 years, Kongju has long been praised as one of the best Korean restaurants in town. These days it still lives up to that reputation. Save for a few flaws in the service, nothing here disappoints thanks to a dedicated kitchen which consistently rolls out delicious dishes. Greeting staff in hanbok (traditional Korean dress) lead you through a tranquil wood-paneled hal l way de corate d w i th Korean characters and through a vast set of ironwork-studded doors. Things inside become rather more modern, the restaurant’s booths and back-lit partitions feeling more like a diner dressed up with porcelain Korean art pieces. Though famous for Korean barbecue, the menu is also packed with
bacon and onion jam (B280)—a delicious coming together of sweet a n d s avo r y. Away f ro m t h e A M headliners, the chicken schnitzel (B420) is a lightly breaded, almost delicate treatment of a pub-grub standard. The addition of anchovies, capers and sour cream give the dish the sharp kick its dull sauerkraut fails to deliver. Freshness abounds in the cured salmon salad (B350) with its plentiful beets, shards of green apple and artful dol lops of dil l creme fraiche, though carb-counters should beware the hidden cuts of fried potato not mentioned on the menu. Everyone else should definitely plump for a serving of the extra-crisp shoestring fries (B180), which are excellent. Daytime is clearly when the cafe is at its busiest, whether it’s with pretty people in their weekend livery or work groups gathering for brainstorming sessions, but the later hours are served by some quality fruit-forward cocktails designed by the team behind Sugar Ray speakeasy. Re-charge (B270) is an all-too-smooth mix that masks its gin behind melon, cucumber and vanilla, while there’s also an equally easygoing selection of “Thai-style” gin tonics highlighting local ingredients (from B250). While Central Embassy’s shiny Apr 2017 openings Open House and Siwilai City Club have taken away some of Siwilai Cafe’s lustre (and clientele), this remains an above-average spot for brunch and beyond.
other traditional dishes including ho bak kal bee tchim (stewed beef/pork ribs served in a pumpkin, B330)—a hard-tofind dish owing to its elaborate cooking process. The cold appetizer goo jeol pan (B290-550) is a winning combination of perfectly presented cold shrimp meat, egg, pulled chicken and flavored cucumber—so good when mixed with the dipping sauce and coated in their soft and springy flat cakes. Barbecue dishes like doe gee kalbi (marinated pork spare ribs, B330) and bulgogi (marinated sliced beef, B390) are perfectly marinated, while the sweet dak kang jeong (fried chicken with garlic and chili, B340) reminds us of Bonchon (and is just as addictive). The chap chae (stir-fried vegetables gelatin with pork, B360) is so good it leaves us speechless, much like the bibimbap (rice mixed vegetables, beef/pork in stone pot, B290) and pajeon (pan-fried spring onion and squid pancake, B320). We’re impressed that they dare to tackle the lengthy process which stewed beef ribs in pumpkin requires, but the juicy and tender meat is let down by dry pumpkin flesh. Wash things down with the sweet, refreshing, goji berry-topped dae chu cha (Korean jujube punch, 150). If you can get over occasionally patchy service, Kongju still delivers one of this town’s very best Korean food experiences.

OPEN DOOR
Canvas Thonglor’s most exciting new restaurant also has the strip’s most creative drinks. The buzz: The team from Thonglor speakeasy Rabbit Hole presents creative locavore flavors at Bangkok’s most exciting new kitchen. The decor: The black and white tiles and French windows say upscale bistro, though there’s a clear modern edge to the huge open kitchen and bar-seating format. Local touches come in the form of beautiful plates created by Bangkok ceramics studio Lamunlamai. The same interior team that did Rabbit Hole, Paradigm Shift, have this time produced a more casual ambience, complete with natural light and a welcoming little garden. The food: Texas-hailing chef Riley Sanders (whose resume features a stint at Chicago's now-closed L20, a job as a private chef on a yacht in Miami and a whole lot of traveling) heads a kitchen that paints with the flavors of Thailand as inspired by world cuisine. In order to create something unique to Bangkok, local ingredients
22
and inventive cooking techniques combine, resulting in dishes like Mekong catfish (B660) caramelized with tamarind tare sauce in the same way the Japanese glaze unagi (freshwater eel). Served alongside it are eel-glazed, peeled local eggplant, grapes, fermented coconut sauce and a second sauce made from local herbs. He also makes his own version of Mexican mole sauce using 30 local spices to go with coconut oil-poached octopus (B680) as well as some even crazier creations, like the intense fried shrimps (B240) coated with shrimp powder batter and served with shrimp paste alongside other condiments. His artistic soul also shines in the refreshing mud crab and lotus dish (B900), in which a giant portion of crab meat sits in a conceptual “swamp” with lotus stems and lotus root chips. We also love the intense chestnut cakes cooked in a kanom krok pan (B340).
The drinks: Head bartender Naphat “Yod” Natchachon keeps standards on a par with Rabbit Hole while complementing the local flavors of the restaurant. Sooth Your Soul (B450) utilizes a rare Chiang Mai leaf called bai nium which our grandparents used to burn and eat with Hong Thong Rum back in the day. Here they infuse the leaves with coffee beans in cognac, mix that with sweet vermouth then serve it with star anise smoke. Tropical botanicals also star in the Canvas Martini (B450): gin, aloe vera vinegar, dry vermouth, ylang-ylang flowers, black olive and coriander flower. Why you should care: The kitchen’s high ambition shines through on the plate and approaches local products with courage. Natcha Sanguankiattichai

NEW AND NOTED
Oppa Ramen Style Turns out “Gangnam style” K-pop superstar Psy’s favorite food is nothing but a humble bowl of ramyeon (Korean instant noodles) with spicy seasoning. His own restaurant, Psy Ramen (G/F, Show DC, 99/6-9 Rim Kong Bang Kapi Rd., 02-203-1888), replicates that with imported Korean instant noodles and a spicy soup made from scratch with the restaurant’s secret chili paste. Offerings range from army soup-inspired spicy sausage noodles (B210), also topped with ham, cheese and baked beans, and the big bowl of blue crab noodles (B260) featuring blue crab and a variety of other seafood. Also try the bibimbap-like cold noodles (B170), which have a touch of Thai spicy salad about them.

ART HIGHLIGHT Central Embassy debuts Snarkitechture's ocean of 1 million balls Ever wondered what it's like to swim in an ocean of plastic balls? You can find out at a massive interactive art installation dubbed The Beach that runs at Central Embassy through Jun 18. Created by Brooklyn design firm Snarkitechture, the project reimagines the natural and cultural elements of an ordinary summer's day at the beach by replacing sand with one million recyclable plastic balls. The installation made its debut at the National Building Museum in Washington in 2015 and is now on a world tour throughout spring of 2017. Here in Bangkok, we don't get the full million balls. In fact it's somewhere closer to 250,000, but it is on display at Central Embassy as part of a celebration to mark the official "completion" of the mall and the opening of Park Hyatt Bangkok. Better yet, it’s all for free.

Bangkok's First Art Biennale Set for 2018
Bangkok’s first foray into the international biennale circuit will take place Nov 2018-Feb 2019. Headed by Prof. Dr Apinan Poshyananda (former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture), the Bangkok Art Biennale 2018 (www.bkkartbiennale.com) was launched on May 13 at an event in Italy coinciding with the start of this year’s Venice Biennale. Popularized by Venice's famous bi-annual art show, which first took place in 1895, the Italian term "biennale" is nowadays commonly used to describe large-scale recurring international contemporary art exhibitions. The scarce promo material so far released for the new event indeed seems to position Bangkok as the "Venice of the
East" with "cultural encounters" slated for sites along the Chao Phraya River like Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Wat Prayoon and East Asiatic Company building, as well as the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. The whole thing is still a year and a half away but organizers are calling it a "new chapter for contemporary art", showcasing artists from Asia, Europe and the Pacific. On its website, the Bangkok Art Biennale Foundation says it aims to develop high-profile art activities that promote Bangkok as a leading contemporary art destination, as well as revitalize areas of the city into art walks and support Thai contemporary artists to participate in other biennales. The website also lists high-profile international advisors including Alexandra Munroe (Senior Curator, Asian Art, and Senior Advisor, Global Arts at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation), David Stuart Elliot (director of the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford), Dr Eugene Tan (director of The National Art Gallery, Singapore), Nanjo Fumio (director of Mori Art Museum, Tokyo), Nigel Hurst (chief executive of Saatchi Gallery, London), Rirkrit Tiravanija (Thai contemporary artist) and Sunjung Kim (director of Sonje Art Center and Professor at the Korea National University of Arts).
