Where to find us!

You’ve heard about the big Sony hack, where suspected-North Korean hackers stole a whole bunch of data and released it to the world. A la Wikileaks, it includes a few shocking revelations from internal memos. 1. Sony knows their reboots (Spiderman, Robocop) suck, but since you’re still watching them, they don’t care. 2. The Expendables 3 is now leaked online, meaning you can see it for free, which is still way too expensive to see a documentary on the ravages of decades-long steroid use for the third time. 3. Even Sony is embarrassed about Adam Sandler. It was about time hackers gave back to society by revealing the home address of Rebel Wilson (we’re headed there right now to pinch her adorable cheeks). But their attack teaches us an even more valuable lesson: we now know which hotel in Bangkok actually has good Wi-Fi. Congrats, St. Regis Bangkok, for being the hotspot from which the cyber-attack was launched. If your Wi-Fi is good enough for the DeadSeoul hackers, it might well be just about good enough to upload a picture of our sushi. Also, we can’t help but be flattered that the general incompetence of our police force continues to make us the kind of city they warn white children about in Hollywood movies. In Bangkok, horrible things happen. You will set your ass on fire eating street food. You will get a tattoo. You will sleep with a man you think is a woman. You will find out director Judd Apatow’s salary. Watch out, kids! Sadly, most tourists never get to hang out with actual foreign criminals. They just try to get an Uber (oh wait, that seems to be down), and settle for a B300 tuk-tuk ride. They try to go to a museum—but those don’t actually open on public holidays, despite what the websites say. They look for their hotel on Google maps, and end up in Samut Prakhan. Bangkok is like a city that’s already been hacked, which means we’re actually pretty safe. There’s just not much mayhem DeadSeoul could bring upon us, even if they tried.

upfront HOT OR NOT

Hot: Crackdowns

Not: Bangkok

First they started arresting innocent white people walking around Asoke and shaking them down for B2,000. Then they tackled Uber, because, you know, it’s just not safe riding in one of those crazy, unlicensed black sedans. Finally, they proposed a ban on alcohol in public places during New Year’s. That’s it, we’re moving to fun-loving Singapore.

Hot: Parks

Not: Markets

No, you don’t need to be buying something to step out of the air-conditioning. While all the farmer and flea markets are lovely, why not head out to a good old-fashioned park like Lumpini. In fact, it’s so nice, we think you should move there (see page 26). But if you really must go shop in the great outdoors, check out the winter markets on page 46.

STREET TALK Samuel Montassier has bucked the trend for high-end Thai food cooked by foreign chefs and looked in another direction: street food. The 43-year-old Frenchman has caused waves on social media for his salad stall at the Chaloem Buri junction on Yaowarat Road, where his yam (spicy Thai salad) has become one of Chinatown’s most popular street eats. What brought you to Thailand? When I was in France, I was involved in a clothing business that required me to source clothes in Thailand for re-sale in France. Later, when I tired of my job, I decided to fly to Bangkok and start anew. Why did you start selling yam?

Hot: Skyscrapers

Not: Converted shophouses

Yep, we’ve changed our minds again. Why live in a crumbling old shop-house with stinking sewage backing up into your toilets and soi dogs baying at the moon all night when you could enjoy the modern comforts of a starchitect-designed high-rise? See page 10 for the ones headed near you.

Going back 20 years, I worked at a Chinese restaurant in Yaowarat as a receptionist. But that wasn’t what I dreamed of doing, so I looked around and tried to see other opportunities to earn a living. Fortunately, I met my wife here [Thailand], who introduced me to one of her friends who sold somtam. She taught us her yam recipe so I turned myself into a street vendor. Now I offer yam woonsen and yam Mama with seafood and minced chicken. How much do you earn a day?

Hot: Multi-label stores Not: Pop-ups We’d actually like pop-ups to be hotter in this town but it’s one imported trend that just doesn’t seem to be catching on quite yet (with the exception of Kenzo Café, see page 28). When they do pop up—like Uncensored at Emporium, Craft on Suk 23 and Brave Roasters at Paragon—they don’t pop down, which isn’t how it’s meant to work. In the meantime, we do already have some great multi-label fashion stores (see page 28).

From 3-9pm, I can sell around 70-100 bowls of yam every day. It costs B50 for each bowl but you can ask for bigger portions. One bowl can cost anything up to B100.

BK iPad app

bkmagazine/bkapp

What reaction do you get from the public?

Have you ever thought of doing something else?

Passers-by are always surprised that a farang knows how to cook yam. Some of them take photos of me and post them on Facebook, captioning me as “farang kai yam” [farang salad seller]—they’ve never seen it before. My story’s gone viral on a number of social media platforms, which has brought a lot of customers.

Never. Selling yam on the street has given me happiness. Just like anyone, I don’t want to feel forced to do anything I don’t want to. It’s a matter of freedom. This has completed the missing piece in my life.

What are your biggest pet-peeves as a street vendor? I’ve never had any problems with the police, like other vendors seen on TV. They never disturb me—some are actually my customers. Perhaps where I park my stall is legal. What has surprised me most is that I love the rainy season. I know other vendors hate it, but for some strange reason I get longer queues of customers on rainy days. I wish it would continue.

get in the loop

bkmagazine.com

What is the secret of your business success? Honesty. I always make sure that every bowl of yam is clean, fresh and at its best, as if I were cooking for my family to eat. More important than being honest with your customers is being honest with yourself. Any parting message? You never know what the future holds. Do what you truly want to do and approach every day as a new challenge. Interview by Tewit Phanitprachaya

The 300 Club Bangkok is rising. There are currently more skyscrapers over 300 meters being built than ever before. Here’s what we can expect to see in the next five years. By Kanin Srimaneekulroj

Mahanakhon

Super Tower

Mahanakhon

At 615 meters tall, the unofficially-named “Super Tower,” beside Central Plaza Grand Rama IX, has smashed other developers’ efforts. It would not only be Bangkok’s tallest building (beating all other projects by nearly 300 meters) but also the tallest skyscraper in the ASEAN region and the seventh tallest in the world. Containing over 300,000 sq meters of usable space, the tower is to house a variety of facilities for residential, business and tourism purposes. Specifics are scarce at the moment, other than to say there will be a luxury hotel, restaurants and a retail arcade. The developers, G Land, are introducing a host of new projects to the Rama IX area including a condominium and mixed-use development focusing on office and retail space.

A lot of details are already known about what should be the first of Bangkok’s new-wave high-rises to open. It contains quite comfortably the city’s most luxurious residences: the Ritz-Carlton-branded apartments designed in collaboration with David Collins Studio. A recent press release issued by its developers claimed they have sold Bangkok’s most expensive ever penthouse at a staggering B480 million. Units left start at B43 million and go right up to B358 million. There’s also a pretty special hotel planned, in partnership with Marriott International and legendary hotelier Ian Schrager (the man who introduced the world to “boutique” accommodation). A round-the-clock retail space also means that residents should never need to leave the property grounds to get groceries.

Where: Rama IX Who: G Land How tall: 615 meters (125 floors) What’s inside: Offices, “six-star” hotel, conference halls, restaurants, observation deck Completion date: 2019

Icon Siam

Mahanakhon

Intended to be “a symbol of national pride,” the Icon Siam, the latest project from the owners of Siam Paragon, is not only going to be Thailand’s largest community shopping complex, but also a museum for various Thai cultural artifacts. The flashy project also includes a 400-meter-long light show as part of an attraction dubbed The Seven Wonders of Siam. Community malls are nothing new for Bangkok, but what we haven’t seen yet is one that targets the same luxury market as Siam Paragon or Emporium, which seems to be where this project is pitching itself. Thailand’s museums generally don’t see much action either, so putting one inside a sprawling shopping mall might not be a bad idea. Where: Klong San Who: Siam Piwat group How tall: 315 meters (70 floors) What’s inside: Two community mal ls, convention hall, condominium Completion date: 2017

Where: Chong Nonsi Who: Pace Development Corporation, Industrial Buildings Corporation (IBC) How tall: 314 meters (77 floors) What’s inside: Ritz-Carlton Residence, retail center, hotel, outdoor plaza Completion date: 2015

Landmark Waterfront Located on Charoenkrung Road, the Landmark Waterfront project is divided into three main areas: Capella Residences, a Capella six-star hotel and a Jumeirah five-star hotel. The main building will house the private residences, with the other two hotel establishments sharing the same project area. Both Capella and Jumeirah are big players when it comes to luxury hotels and resorts. The first, and least well known, mainly has properties in the Americas but also operates a beautiful Foster + Partners-designed hotel in Singapore. Jumeirah, meanwhile, is the Dubai hospitality arm behind The Palm islands, who first planned to enter the Thai market with a private island off the coast of Phuket that never materialized. Where: Sathorn Who: Country Group Development How tall: 305 meters (74 floors) What’s inside: Two hotels, residences

cover story The Best of the Rest They might not be as tall as Bangkok’s latest high-flying buildings, but the city’s condo skyscraper scene is booming. Here are the most interesting.

Magnolia Ratchadamri

Menam Residences

Located near BTS Ratchadamri, residents of this exquisitely designed building can wake up to the refreshing view of Lumpini park, located just across the road (see Avenue Home, page 28). There’s also going to be a hotel from Hilton’s luxury Waldorf Astoria.

Located on the “most beautiful bend in the Chao Phraya River”, close to Asiatique, Menam Residences will not only house serviced condo units, but also a luxury 5-star hotel and a multi-use space filled with restaurants, bars and meeting facilities.

Canapaya Residences As the self-proclaimed ‘one-and-only’ mixeduse development on Rama III, Canapaya Residences has a lot going for it. With a view overlooking the Chao Phraya River, the development also boasts a retail plaza and hotel with various venues from spas and restaurants to retail establishments. The marina will also apparently be used for docking private yachts and luxury cruises. Where: Bang Kho Laem Who: Canapaya Property What’s inside: Condominium How tall: 250 meters (57 floors) Completion date: 2018

The development’s location near BTS Phrom Pong means that popular retail center The Emporium is only a brief walk away. The facilities offered are also quite varied, with a roof garden, a full-sized squash court, a cigar and wine bar and a world-class golf simulator, to name a few. Where: Wattana Who: Major Development Co Ltd. What’s inside: Condominium How tall: 222 meters (50 floors) Completion date: 2017

The Bangkok Sathorn

Noble Phloenchit The tallest building in the Phloen Chit area will be primely located, just across the road from Central Embassy. Inside, you’ll find all the facilities you expect, such as swimming pools, fitness rooms and sauna rooms. Where: Phloen Chit Who: Noble Development What’s inside: Condominium How tall: 185m (52 floors) Completion date: 2016

The latest in a long list of developments by long-time Thai real-estate company Land and House, this condo is located conveniently on Sathorn road, right by a high way ramp. Residents traveling to the condo can easily do so via BTS Surasak, while residents leaving the condo have almost immediate access to the high way.

T

hough it’s been separated from the Soviet Union for more than 20 years, Kazakhstan still has a rather austere reputation. But the world’s largest land-locked country has many treasures to offer new visitors, from the stunning mountain ranges to the shy but friendly locals. While the Kazakh tourism industry is still in its early stages, there’s little that compares with horseback riding across the arid plains or walking the wide streets of Almaty, the country’s biggest city and former capital.

Essentials GETTING THERE

DO

Altyn Emel National Park

Astana may the current capital, but Almaty is still the jewel of Kazakhstan. Situated amid the snowy mountaintops in the country’s Southeast, the sprawling city is also the most populous part of the country. Its name derives from “Alma-Ata,” meaning “father of apples,” and the region is indeed famous for its apple production. Ostensibly celebrated on the third Sunday in September, Almaty City Day is in reality a month-long party that also features a prominent Apple Fest. The city itself is also expanding. The skyline may look modern, but there are plenty of remnants left of its Soviet past. One is The Ascension Cathedral, the second-tallest wooden Russian Orthodox cathedral in the world, which houses some dazzling golden ornaments. The cathedral is located in Panfilov Park, a prime spot for meeting locals, too. Right next door is the Green Market, where people from all over the city come to shop for fresh vegetables, fruits and meat such as goat, lamb and horse. Bargaining is a must.

For some exercise, and a chance to get closer to nature, visit Altyn Emel National Park. Situated about 260 kilometers from Almaty, you’ll need to take a three-hour 4WD ride to reach Altyn Emel, which means “golden saddle.” Here, you’ll witness both desert and steppe grassland, as well as gazelles, wild donkeys, falcons and eagles. The area is also home to the so-called “singing” sand dunes. Some 120 meters high and three kilometers wide, they get their name from the noise made by the wind as it funnels through the area—a sound not unlike a jet plane taking off.

STAY There are a number of big luxury hotel chains like the Ritz-Carlton Kazakhstan (Esentai Tower, 77/7 Al-Farabi Avenue, +7 (727) 332-8888. bit.ly/1FIPgd8) next to the Esentai Mall. Prices start at B15,000 per night. For a more budget option try Iris Hotel (176 Furmanova St., +7(727) 399-00-33. www. irishotel.kz) which offers rooms at a moderate B3,000 per night and is right by the metro.

SEE

Walk around the Old Capital

Charyn Canyon Often described as a “mini-Grand Canyon,” this 300-meter-deep chasm is home to the “Valley of Castles,” where layers of pink-orange rock have piled up over millions of years. Take the opportunity to stay in the area overnight in a yurt (an ancient shelter used by Central Asian nomads) but be prepared for a cold night under the sea of stars. Watching the sun rise the next morning is one of those special moments that sticks with you forever.

Kolsai Lakes Considered among Kazakhstan’s most beautiful attractions, these three alpine lakes are located a two-hour rough ride from Altyn Emel National Park, and stand 2,000 meters above sea level. The first lake can be easily reached by car, but the other two require trekking or horseback riding, and it takes a full day’s travel from lake one to lake three and

back. Even in summer, temperatures hover around 10 degrees Celsius so pack warm. Horse rental can be arranged at the nearby village, Saty.

Kaindy Lake Kaindy Lake looks like something out of a fairy tale. Surrounded by pine forests, the lake is a beautiful emerald color with submerged trees peeking out from below––really a sight to behold. There are a number of homestays at Saty village which allow you to enjoy the local way of life and make the most of the mystical setting.

EAT

Zheti Kazyna Foodies are in for a treat in Almaty. Zheti Kazyna (Abylay Khana Ave., 58A, Almaty, +7 (727) 2732587, bit.ly/1va8C7Y), meaning “seven treasures,” is a fine place to start. The restaurant features traditional Kazakh and other Central Asian food. Beshbarmak, one of the national dishes, is a must-try, consisting of flat noodles in soup topped with horse or goat meat. The adventurous should also try the strong but fragrant Shubat camel milk and Kumys horse milk.

Alasha Restaurant Alasha Restaurant (Abylay Khana Ave., 58A, Almaty, +7 (727) 2732587, www.alasha.kz/en) isn’t traditional Kazakh food, but actually serves dishes from neighboring Uzbekistan. The tangy food is spiced up further with live Uzbek music and dance every night. The signature dish is called plov, or pilaf, rice cooked with meat and grated carrots and onions.

There are direct flights from Bangkok to Almaty daily. Air Astana (www.airastana.com) has the lowest fares starting from B30,500 for a round-trip. GETTING AROUND

Joining a tour is the best option as roads and public transportation are sketchy at best. To get out-of-town, we recommend Almaty City Tour (eng. city-tour.kz) which offers an English-speaking guide and expert driver. The six-day Golden Ring of Zhetisu package is $1,655 (about B54,000) for two people. Air Astana also does packages. Visit bit.ly/1pFOSbx. VISA

It’s pretty tricky if you want to do it all by yourself. Your best bet is a travel agent, who can arrange a Single Entry Tourist Visa for around US$40 (about B1,300). Visit bit.ly/1tDdXiI. EXCHANGE RATE

CHIANG RAI

Community Christmas Exciting new startup Local Alike (095-569-7877, www.localalike.com) offers several tour programs where 70 percent of what you spend goes straight to the villages involved. On Dec 24-26, it’s organizing a three-day-two-night trip to Chiang Rai’s Hloyo Village and Mae Salong community for you to celebrate Christmas with the Akha hill tribe at B4,800 per person. Highlights include horse riding or trekking to the Ooolong tea plantation, cherry blossom sightseeing and dancing classes, plus lots of tribal food. Booking deadline is Dec 20.

KHAO YAI

Drinks with a View Set in the beautiful Asoke Valley surrounded by mountains, GranMonte vineyard (081-622-6662, www.granmonte.com) is just the place to take in the crisp winter air. Throughout December, it’s offering a Winter in the Vineyard promotion featuring live music performances from Bangkok’s Smiles Jazz Club every weekend, special Christmas wine-pairing menus (B1,200-1,700 per person) and New Year’s Eve menus (B1,400-1,950 per person) at the VinCotto restaurant. There are also discounts on some wines and homemade goods at Montino Cella Door, plus an outdoor wine bar operating on weekends and public holidays. The 90-minute guided vineyard tour is operating as usual.

PATTAYA

Park of Sensual Delights Pattaya has welcomed an eye-catching new attraction, Love Art Park (038-237710, tinyurl.com/naqr2v3). Set on a 35-rai-plot of land in South Pattaya, the new attraction features a green park decorated with over 100 Korean-made sculptures based on erotic works of art. The park opened its doors in September but the grand opening is set for the middle of 2015, once all three buildings of the museums are complete. At the moment, it’s a good spot for a picnic and some naughty photo ops. Through Dec 31, entrance fee is B150 for foreigners and B100 for Thais.

AIRLINES

Around Asia Starting in Jan 2015, budget carrier AirAsia (www.airasia.com) will be rolling out a new AirAsia ASEAN pass that lets you visit up to 10 ASEAN countries in a month for just B4,889, excluding surcharges and taxes. The pass, which lasts for 30 days, comes loaded with 10 credits that can be used on 137 different routes within the ASEAN region. Each route costs between one and eight credits, one-way, but does exclude any related taxes or surcharges. We’re still scratching our head a little, but it does seem to be a decent deal, especially if you plan on taking a month off to travel round the region. Plus, you can earn points which you can redeem for free AirAsia flights in the future. More info to follow.

Taipei Connection The Taiwanese low-cost airline V Air (www.flyvair.com) is launching direct flights between Bangkok and Taipei on Dec 17. Following a 10-day online campaign to boost Facebook fans, the airline announced on Dec 1 introductory rates of B1,100 for a round-trip (excluding airport taxes), through May 2015. The regular fare is around B9,800 for a round-trip. The airline is also scheduled to launch flights between Taipei and Chiang Mai on Jan 7. Check its website for updates.

Of all this restaurant’s generation-old family recipes, the most famous are moo kua kapi (stir-fried pork with shrimp paste) and pak liang (stir-fried local leaves with egg).

The stylish flagship restaurant at W Retreat is clearly one of Koh Samui’s most chic dining spots. Under the control of Korean chef Sin Keun Choi, the venue looks to reinvent classic Japanese recipes through a blend of Asian and Western flavors. The result is highly creative and artistically presented dishes.

Haad Bang Po Despite the owner’s 20 years’ experience at high-end hotels, this beachfront restaurant offers a very local taste in a rustic setting. Expect classic Samui seafood dishes like khai jiew hor mok (omelet with spicy curry seafood), waii kua (octopus in dried curry) and pla song nam (deep fried sea bass with spicy and sour sauce). Moo 4, Had Bang Por Beach, Mae Nam, 081-7888936. Open daily 10am-10pm

Ko Seng Ko Seng has been serving seafood for more than 50 years, and is adored by locals for its intriguing blend of Chinese and Southern Thai dishes. Its selling point is a commitment to serving only fresh seafood and vegetables grown at the restaurant, and the menu changes depending on the catch of the day.

W Retreat Koh Samui, 4 Bontji Moo 4, Bophut, 077-915-999. Open daily 6-11pm; lunch Fri-Sun noon-4pm. www.wretreatkohsamui.com

The Larder This little restaurant does some of the best international comfort food you’ll find on Koh Samui outside of a hotel. The menu covers various hearty classics, from Angus beef burgers and five-bean burritos to flame-grilled wagyu rump steak and confit pork belly. The dining room looks like somewhere you’d find in Bangkok, with lots of naturally treated wood and polished concrete. 9/144 Moo 2, Chaweng, 077-601-259. Open Mon-Sat noon-11pm. www.thelardersamui.com

Krua Chao Baan Krua Chao Baan sits in three wooden houses right next to the white sands of Lamai Beach. The menu is big on Southern recipes such as gaeng sum (spicy sour soup), stir-fried shrimp with sataw beans, and hormok talay (crab eggs in steamed curry). Don’t miss their specialty, khai-jiew Krua Chao Baan, an omelet that looks more like a Spanish tortilla. 438/18 Moo 1, Maret, 077-418-589. Open daily 10am-10pm. www.tinyurl.com/lyj9kxm

And MZD Connect displays social media notification and texts on the car’s screen via built-in Bluetooth. Other specs include a 2.0-liter, direct-injection motor and six-speed automatic transmission. The new Theta State Float Center claims to a trance-like state of relaxation through two futuristic float pods and two float rooms. Both chamber types are filled with around 25 centimeters of dense, skin-temperature Epsom saltwater, which allows you to float effortlessly on the surface (just like the Dead Sea). We gave it a go and came away feeling like our office-stricken bodies had been given a good massage. Others talk of more hallucinatory experiences. Everyone reacts differently, part-owner Annile Alexander tells us. As part of the center’s grand opening, they have an introductory buy-two-get-one-free deal at B1,950 (60 minutes). 88/1, 24th Avenue Mall, Sukhumvit Soi 24, 02-261-7943. Open Tue-Sun 10am-10pm

Largely dependent on what side of Lumpini you reside. At the Sarasin end, you’ll find lots of office workers who won’t cause you any trouble but don’t make for the most colorful neighbors either. Lower Ratchadamri is home to wealthy expats and lots of short-term residents holed away in high-rise condos, while the subsois of Wireless Road and down to Rama 4 have a more charming community feel with plenty of mom-andpop stores.

Wireless Rd.

A great mix of street food and decent restaurants. We recommend the beloved somtam joint 10 Jae Kee’s on Soi Polo (02-655-8489), where the fried chicken is topped with mounds of delicious garlic. Nearby you’ll find the popular brunch spot 11 Brooklyn Baker (inside Retreat on Vitayu Spa, Soi Polo, 081-855-7090), which supplies pastries to Casa Lapin and has a similar kind of vibe. For something more refined, try 12 Osha (Wireless Rd., 02-256-6555), one of the hottest new Thai restau-

Quite literally surrounded by BTS/MRT stations on all sides, with BTS Ratchadamri and MRT Lumpini being the main ones. Traffic on all roads surrounding the park can be terrible during rush hours, but being so central means it’s not that hard to get anywhere. And of course, you can always cut through the park on foot.

As good as it gets. 8 Lumpini Park alone dominates the area, off which leads some really nice little sois, especially on the Wireless side. Away from the roads, there’s also a great raised bike track that connects Lumpini Park with another cycle-friendly green space, Benjakitti. (Get your set of wheels at 9 Culture Cycliste, G/F, Indosuez Building, Wireless Rd., 02-651-4114.) Footpaths are not as well maintained as on Rama 1— and motorbike taxis love to use them to dodge the traffic—but they’re nowhere near the worst. Your main complaint living here is going to be traffic jams.

Lumpini Park

Bars in the Lumpini area itself are pretty slim on the ground now that Brown Sugar’s closed—but Langsuan is just around the corner. That said, there are a couple of places we like. Our favorite is 14 You Bahn (Wireless Rd., 095-546-9163), a cozy, nicely-designed café that transforms into a bar at night. For late-night partying with the city’s young, wealthy and well-dressed, there’s also the Royal Bangkok Sports Club’s 15 Falabella (Ratchadamri Rd., 02-252-5131).

Smack-bang in the middle of Bangkok with beautiful views of the park, this is prime real estate for fancy condos with big prices. But there are mid-range alternatives. We found 40-sqm studios in 1 Lumpini Park View (Rama IV Rd., 02-677-6630-1)) for B15,000/ month, while even some of the more fancy-looking places like 2 The Rajdamri (Ratchadamri Rd., 02-2528855) have rooms starting at B25,000 for 45-sqm. Jumping up a bit, there are a nicely sized one-bedrooms in 3 Baan Somthavil (Soi Mahatlek Luang 3) for B25,000. If you have deep pockets, fancy new places on the Ratchadamri side of the park like 4 Baan Rajprasong (Ratchadamri Rd., 02-264-6464), 5 The Colony Lumpini (Sarasin Rd., 02-561-5050), 6 185 Rajdamri (Ratchadamri Rd., 02-651-9600) and 7 St. Regis Residences (Ratchadamri Rd., 02-207-7777) go from B45,000 to B200,000 a month.

In keeping with the ongoing food truck trend, the café is made up of a van adorned with Kenzo’s signature graphic prints as well as limited black and white tables and chairs. Coffees span classics like espresso (B70) to specials like the gingerbread honey macchiato (B130 or B140 for iced), warm apple pie cappuccino (B140) and sea salt caramel mocha (B140 or B150 for iced). Other drinks include the White Christmas tea (B110). On the bakery side of things, you can taste rotating options like the lemon blueberry tea cake (B110) and red and brown velvet cupcake (B95). The new Bangkok branch of the Sydney-based restaurant Mejico does away with Mexican food’s usual format of big portions and a casual atmosphere. Claiming to use the freshest ingredients on the market, Mejico aims to give its food a more exciting edge by incorporating theatrical elements into dishes like fresh oysters served with sangrita jelly and jalapeno (B360) and guacamole made table -side with banana chips (B235). The menu does include some simpler items, too, like the substantial braised beef short rib in smoky chipotle marinade (B695). There are also over 40 different labels of tequila behind the bar, including rare bottles like Gran Corralejo (B750). 2/F, Groove, CentralWorld, Rama 1 Rd., 081-616-4026. Open Sun-Thu 11am-midnight, Fri-Sat 11-1am. BTS Chit Lom

After a year-and-a-half hiatus, Dine in the Dark has returned to BarSu at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit. Adventurous foodies get to challenge their taste buds by dining in total darkness on a surprise four-course menu (B1,420) which might include Thai, Western or vegetarian food. It’s an awkward but fun experience that makes for good conversation—just stick close to your guide on the way in, as he’s the only one who knows where the tables are. U.N.C.L.E.’s already-stellar cocktail list has been given a retro-70s boost with the arrival of an expert in Polynesian-style cocktails. Sebastian De La Cruz of Stockholm’s Tiki Room bar is now in Bangkok on a one-year contract with U.N.C.L.E., and has introduced a new menu of 10 drinks inspired by the South Pacific islands. The pina colada-like Coco de Rock (B330) features Appleton 12-year-old rum, coconut cream, cinnamon, citrus and Angostura bitters, while the Big Poppa (B330) fuses Diplomático rum with Fernet-Branca, rock candy, citrus juice and egg white. 2/F, Lady Brett, 149 Sathorn Soi 12, 02-635-0406. Mixologist Bard Passapong’s Suan Plu bar packs in a real mixed crowd. The renovated shop-house is as easy-going as they come, dominated by DIY touches, from the makeshift décor to the limited edition booze (ask for Bard’s nightly special). Try their food too, like the Australian wagyu beef burger (with tomato relish, cheddar cheese and bacon, B190).

This small venue really kick-started the city’s bar and gallery trend. Head upstairs to check out the latest exhibition, prop up the bar by ordering a bottle of Beerlao (B140) or do as the cool crowd do and stand outside in the alley, where they occasionally hold block parties, too. 7 Sukhumvit Soi 51. 02-662-6246. The latest opening from the team behind Salt and Aree Bar is a miniscule burger and beer joint located in what used to be the owners’ clothes shop. The bare-bones space offers up a short list of burgers headed by the WTF (wagyu beef, foie gras, tomato, bacon and “homemade” sauce, B280). The place seats about 10 people, so roll up those sleeves as you knock back a bottle of Phuket Beer (B100) or Estrella (B590 for a large bottle). Piyawan Bldg., Ari Soi 1. Open Mon-Sat 6pm-midnight. The latest addition to the super-hip Sukhumvit Soi 51 (see WTF, above) airs global beats with quality drinks. Named after DJ Maft Sai’s new Zudrangma Records spin-off, the space may look fairly basic, bearing the remnants of an old Japanese restaurant that used to be there, but the star of the show is a specially designed custom tube sound system which pumps out everything from molam to acid jazz. The bar also boasts the most exciting list of ya dong in the city. Sukhumvit Soi 51, 02-261-6661 Open Tue-Sun 6pm-1am. BTS Thong Lo.

Foo Mui Kee

This Western-inspired old-school canteen has been open for 40 years and, in all that time, the core employees haven’t changed. The large menu covers everything from Thai street staples like khao gaeng to hamburgers, but be warned: anything deep-fried has a suspicious after-taste. Some questionable dishes aside, the place has character in spades, from the spiky-haired, 300-pound papasan to the bubbly waitress who, without fail, will always get your order wrong. Drop by on Thursday for the khao soi special (from B40), which is always prepared differently, but never disappoints.

Whatever you think about the flavors on offer at this humble restaurant, there’s no arguing with its authenticity. That’s a refreshing change in a city increasingly filled with retro-inspired restaurants that think the odd antique can create atmosphere. It’s filled with character and an almost museum-like air thanks to the painfully upright wooden benches, gorgeous vintage fans and the groups of Chinese aunts and uncles that come here to eat. The food is equally authentic—a kind of Western-Chinese hybrid of flavors. The unconventional steamed rice in a pot (B90) has everything thrown in, from frankfurter to prawns, while the “ox tongue stew” (B130) is a cheap treat for anyone who loves frozen peas and gravy. Best of all is their homemade Worcestershire sauce—which tastes nothing like the original.

Tang Hong Pochana This three-story shop-house specializing in five-spice boiledgoose (starting B80 for a small plate) has one of the most original interiors of any Bangkok restaurant, with walls covered in plastic sheets made to look like marble. At lunch hours, the place gets packed so be sure to arrive early if you want to try the delicious pickled-lemon chicken soup (B60), which almost always sells out before 1pm. Also be sure to try their stir-fried vegetables with crispy pork (B60). 2/2 Soi Convent, Silom Rd., 02-235-6362. Open Mon-Sat 8am-6pm (or when the food runs out). BTS Sala Daeng

Samai Suek Pochana One of the most old-school places we know also serves some of the best khao man gai (Hainanese chicken rice, B40) in Bangkok. The cholesterol-heavy dish is a guilty morning meal we can’t say no to thanks to the fresh and succulent capon (castrated cockerel) meat. Minimal seasoning lets the flavor of the chicken stand out, further enhanced by the not-toosweet and perfectly spiced tao jiaw sauce, which is also in a different league to most other khao man gai restaurants. The auntie who serves you always has a smile on her face, too. 209 Silom Rd., right of Silom Complex, 02-631-2956. Open daily 8am-9pm. BTS Sala Daeng

Chuan Savoey Chuan Savoey stands out for being one of the oldest places for crispy Chinese roast pork. They do over 100 covers a day, and even despite the quick service time, you’ll struggle to find a seat at lunch hours. While their bah mie (egg noodles) aren’t much better than most places in town, the roast pork with rice and gravy (B40) is something special. The thick gravy has a delicious balance of sweetness, nuttiness and a hint of licorice. Silom Rd., left of Samai Suek Pochana, 02-235-1860. Open daily 8am-8pm. BTS Sala Daeng

Pad Thai Sala Daeng Though not a shop-house, the pad Thai at this wooden shack on Sala Daeng definitely bears mentioning. The vermicelli noodles are also done to perfection. 48 Sala Daeng Soi 2, the alley right behind Silom Complex, Silom Rd., 084-899-5301. Open Mon-Fri 9am-2:30pm. BTS Sala Daeng Chuan Savoey

CHEF Q&A

Zra Jirarath is one of the few chefs in Bangkok to own a restaurant that focuses on doing only a chef’s table, Aston Dining Room and Bar, where he serves high-wired modernist European cuisine from an open kitchen between two rows of seats. How do guests take the chef’s table-only concept? When we first started, we had some problems with our Thai guests. They would ask me, do you have Caesar salad? Do you do pasta Carbonara? May I have just a piece of steak? An average Thai’s

36

perception about Western cuisine is still quite narrow. On a slow night, I even ask the guests if they want to eat anything in particular, which in a way, puts them into an awkward silence. Some of them even left my restaurant immediately when they opened the menu because they didn’t see names that are familiar to them.

which also gives me an opportunity to interact with them, guide them through the ingredients and concept of each dish. It’s all about having a good time. What determines a successful chef’s table? The chef needs to be highly individual. There needs to be a stamp of ingenuity and originality on every dish presented.

Why did you opt for a chef’s table? With an open kitchen, our guests get to see what goes on in the process of every dish they receive,

There are only a handful of them, but Bonita Café and Social Club may well be t h e m o st i nv i t i n g o rg a n i c ve g a n restaurant in town. Run by a ThaiJapanese couple, this small, living roomlike café has become a meeting spot for the runners of Lower Silom and prides itself as a genuine social club. Among the kitsch clutter of decorative plates and cookbooks (more reminiscent of a hoarding grandmother than anything you’d find at a trendy flea market), they sell Muteki running shoes imported from Japan (starting B1,800). But the real focus is on the concise menu of Westernstyle vegetarian and vegan dishes, including some gluten-free and raw options. This is comfort food that’s also relatively guilt-free, starting with the perfectly-executed onion rings (B90): crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside and leaving barely a trace of oil on the serving basket’s paper-towel lining. There are a few instances of mock meat, like the faux bacon chips of the Caesar

This colorful shop-house transports the dishes of the legendary grilled chicken and somtam joint of the same name on Ratchadapisek into a proper dining setting. (In case you were wondering, the Mangmoom of the title refers to MR Srikhamrung Yukol, the daughter of veteran filmmaker HSH Prince Chatrichalerm Yukol). Set in the Piman 49 community mall, it rubs shoulders with refined neighbors like Rocket S49, Ramen Tei Premium and high-end Japanese grill Karatama Robatayaki. And if you compare the prices here with those you pay for somtam on the street, Kai Yang Sua Yai by Mangmoom fits right in among this expensive enclave. salad (B140), but they are avoidable and not really necessary since the crisp greens and surprisingly creamy dressing do the heavy lifting. The most intriguing dish, and perhaps the high point of the place, is the raw zucchini “pasta” (B180), which comprises uncooked shredded zucchini, a chunky and slightly spicy tomato sauce, topped with a fluffy pureed cashew cream. Fresh and crunchy, it’s far from the watery mess you may have feared. In comparison, the teriyaki burger (B200) is a little plain. The wholewheat bun is soft yet firm, but the sweet sauce does not add enough life to the dry onion and tofu patty. We do enjoy the small side of lightly roasted potato. Be sure to leave room for dessert. Apart from a wonderfully dense carrot cake (B130), we’re taken with the chocolate mousse (B100). Sugar-free and gluten-free, it’s served up as two balls that resemble scoops of chocolate ice cream in appearance and temperature. The texture, though, is something else: rich without being overly heavy. More reasons to visit include the soft wholewheat pancakes and the long, long list of drinks: shakes, sodas, “Datorade,” coffees and many more made with soya milk imported from the US. This is slow food, with everything homemade (bar the ketchup—now there’s an idea) and cooked-to-order. Even if you’re not a vegan or vegetarian, Bonita is the kind of place that delivers a refreshing, natural high.

you back B95 (that’s before tax and service charge). The flavors are nice and tangy, though—pretty much how you’d expect to get it on the street, too. If you’re not too worried about price tags, a lot of the dishes hit the spot, in fact, like their legendary crispy grilled chicken (B220 for whole/B120 for half). A world away from the old Ratchadapisek setting, it tastes just as satisfying; the skin is crispy as promised, while the tender meat is seasoned excellently. A classic dish done justice. Though hardly disastrous, some of the other Isaan staples fail to live up to these heights, with many falling prey to Bangkokians’ love for all things sweet . The recommended Thai somtam with deepfried seabass (B450) is a slight mismatch of saccharine papaya with extremely salty, deep-fried fish. Even dishes like the Southern flat roti with green curry (B155) are a bit too sugary for our liking. The roti is delightfully chewy, though. Some of the sweetness is actually a legitimate guilty pleasure, as with the crispy catfish fried with chili and basil leaves (B155)— piquant and aromatic. Similarly enjoyable is the charcoal-grilled pork neck in spicy salad (B145). Overall, while prices might be steep, the nightly celebrity crowds can’t be entirely wrong—this hi-so somtam joint mostly hits the mark.

Lenzi Tuscan Kitchen An old face serves up authentic dishes from central Italy.

The buzz: The former head chef of Medici at Hotel Muse, Francesco Lenzi, has added to Bangkok’s growing list of region-specific Italian cuisine specialists with his Tuscany-inspired eponymous restaurant. The décor: Rustic, but in a refined, designer-y sort of way: dark-red, button-back leather dining chairs, rich wooden tables and candlelight. The glass-partitioned kitchen allows guests to watch the cooking process, much of which involves the traditional wood-fire oven. At the time of our visit, the second floor and al fresco dining area were still under construction.

42

The food: Be sure to try the cold cuts. One of Lenzi’s talking points is the antica norcineriaone sourced from his uncle’s small-scale ham curing business back in Italy. The Tagliere del Lenzi (B790) offers an excellent selection of meats and cheese. The wood-fire oven is used to bring authentic, rustic flavor to dishes like capicola (dry-cured pork muscle) pan-fried in capers and lemon sauce (B720) and even desserts, such as the poached pear served with chocolate ice cream (B280). The drinks: Their own little wine cellar contains a great selection of Tuscan reds and whites. For vegetable dishes and salad, Lenzi recommends a refreshing white like the Fresco-

baldi Pomino Bianco DOC 2012 (B2,100/bottle), while the spicy aromatics of Casanova di Neri Rosso di Montalcino 2011 (B2,300/bottle) are best paired with cheese-rich dishes like nettle potato gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese (B420). The crowd: Mainly locals. The dining room already buzzes with smartly dressed young couples and families, many of whom, they say, have followed Lenzi over from Medici. 404 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 02-714-8875. Open daily 6pm-2am

NEW AND NOTED

Big Fish Served in a Japanese-taiyaki-fish-resembling soft waffle cone stuffed with either red bean paste or custard, and chocolate-coated fruit chunks, the frozen yogurt at Café Aboong (in front of Digital Gateway, Siam Square Soi 7. www.fb.com/Cafeaboongth) is said to be 100-percent fat free. The brand and all the ingredients are imported from South Korea, and the Thai owner says the flavors are exactly the same as the original branch. Note that this B159 treat is quite large, so it's a good idea to share it with a friend.

Traditional Kitchen Using the owners’ old family recipes, Yang Gao Gorn (97 Phahon Yothin 8, 081-930-5260. ow.ly/F7M9d) serves home-style Thai food that’s cooked from scratch the traditional way. The menu includes staples like kai pa lo (hard-boiled eggs in brown

sauce, starting B60), and beef curry (B180). Other old-time favorites include liver pâté with rice cake (B120) and hard-tofind jicama salad (yam bean/ Mexican turnip salad B100). They also make special dishes according to seasonal ingredients, like the rose apple flower salad (B220).

Bring Back the Beef Serving the same beef noodle recipes as Vibhawadee’s famous Nuea Grob Noodle behind Thai Airways, Wua Nood (Mahatun Plaza, Phloen Chit Rd., 02-650-7842, www.fb.com/wuanood) specializes in juicy nuea grob (beef shank slices). Other options include braised beef and shanks. Noodles start at B75 with local beef knuckle or you can opt for Thai-French beef at B120-B200. The restaurant also offers appetizers like fried wontons with tomyam sauce (B50) and crab spring rolls (B70).

Dark, cavernous and yet romantic, The Iron Fairies is like no other bar in Bangkok—a Dickensian factory with crumbling brick walls and a scattering of ancient, industrial machinery. At the bar, an unparalleled list of live blues and jazz bands perform nightly, including Keithen Carter and contestants from The Voice Thailand. Food includes the delicious, and very sizeable, signature burger with “Old Man Jap” fries, which you can wash down with the powerful cocktails courtesy of Joseph Boroski, before perhaps taking the microphone and reciting a number yourself.

The Possession of Michael King

upcoming The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies (NZ/UK/US)

I Fine… Thank You… Love You

FILM Directed by David Jung. Starring Shane Johnson, Julie McNiven, Ella Anderson, Cara Pifko and Tomas Arana. “Nowhere near as rigorous as the Paranormal Activity movies it superficially resembles, writer-director David Jung’s increasingly unpleasant, rarely frightening debut feature won’t possess screens for long.” Justin Chang, Variety “Dim in wits and lighting, The Possession of Michael King strains our eyes, spits on our intelligence and saps our generosity of spirit.” Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times “Why would a possessed Michael continue to operate the camera or even turn on night vision? You simply can’t capitalize on a filmmaking fad by shortchanging the audience.” Martin Tsai, Los Angeles Times

“Potentially intriguing questions about faith and organized religion are quickly jettisoned in favor of cheap scare tactics and formulaic gore.” Todd Jorgensen, Cinemalogue.com “A brick of clichés, repellent characterization, and bad acting.” Brian Orndorf, Blu-ray.com “Jung’s film goes through all the machinations of a found footage possession film with about as much creative spark as an apathetic teen checking off a list in a film class that he hates.” Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com “The film’s single cringe-worthy moment involves King slowly pressing a big needle directly into the tip of his finger. He doesn’t feel anything. By the end, unfortunately, neither do we.” Dann Gire, Daily Herald

FREEWILL ASTROLOGY SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Harper Lee was born and raised in Alabama. At the age of 23, she relocated to New York City with hopes of becoming a writer. It was a struggle. To support herself, she worked as a ticket agent for airline companies. Finding the time to develop her craft was difficult. Seven years went by. Then one Christmas, two friends gave her a remarkable gift: enough money to quit her job and work on her writing for a year. During that grace period, Lee created the basics for a book that won her a Pulitzer Prize: To Kill a Mockingbird. I don’t foresee anything quite as dramatic for you in the coming months, Sagittarius. But I do suspect you will receive unexpected help that provides you with the slack and spaciousness you need to lay the foundations for a future creation. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): In the ancient Greek epic poem the Odyssey, Odysseus’s wife Penelope describes two kinds of dreams. “Those that that pass through the gate of ivory,” she says, are deceptive. But dreams that “come forth through the gate of polished horn” tell the truth. Another ancient text echoes these ideas. In his poem the Aeneid, Virgil says that “true visions” arrive here from the land of dreams through the gate of horn, whereas “deluding lies” cross over through the gate of ivory. Judging from the current astrological omens, Capricorn, I expect you will have interesting and intense dreams flowing through both the gate of ivory and the gate of horn. Will you be able to tell the difference? Trust love. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Your chances of going viral are better than usual. It’s a perfect moment to upload a Youtube video of yourself wearing a crown of black roses and a V for Vendetta mask as you ride a unicycle inside a church and sing an uptempo parody version of “O Come All Ye Faithful.” It’s also a favorable time for you to create a buzz for you and your pet causes through less spectacular measures. Promote yourself imaginatively. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): At age 80, author Joan Didion has published five

novels, ten works of non-fiction, and five screenplays. When she was 27, she wrote, “I have already lost touch with a couple of people I used to be.” That wasn’t a good thing, she added: “We are well-advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not. Otherwise they turn up unannounced and surprise us, come hammering on the mind’s door and demand to know who deserted them, who betrayed them, who is going to make amends.” I recommend her counsel to you in the coming months, Pisces. Get reacquainted with the old selves you have outgrown and abandoned. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Lord Byron (1788-1824) was an English poet who loved animals. In the course of his life, he not only had dogs and cats as pets, but also monkeys, horses, peacocks, geese, a crocodile, a falcon, a crane, and a parrot. When he enrolled in Trinity College at age 17, he was upset that the school’s rules forbade students from having pet dogs, which meant he couldn’t bring his adored Newfoundland dog Boatswain. There was no regulation, however, against having a tame bear as a pet. So Byron got one and named it Bruin. I think it’s time for you to find a workaround like that, Aries. Be cunning. Try a gambit or two. Find a loophole.

TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Whenever I lost one of my baby teeth as a kid, I put it under my pillow before I went to sleep. During the night, the Tooth Fairy sneaked into my room to snatch the tooth, and in its place left me 25 cents. The same crazy thing happened to every kid I knew, although for unknown reasons my friend John always got five dollars for each of his teeth—far more than the rest of us. I see a metaphorically comparable development in your life, Taurus. It probably won’t involve teeth or a visit from the Tooth Fairy. Rather, you will finally be compensated for a loss or deprivation or disappearance that you experienced in the past. I expect the restitution will be generous, too—more like John’s than mine. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20): Through the scientific magic of grafting, a single tree can be altered to grow several different kinds of fruit at the same time. One type of “fruit salad tree” produces apricots, nectarines, plums, and peaches, while another bears grapefruits, lemons, oranges, limes, and tangelos. I’m thinking this might be an apt and inspiring symbol for you in the coming months, Gemini. What multiple blooms will you create on your own metaphorical version of a fruit salad tree? CANCER (Jun 21-Jul 22): No other structure on the planet is longer

than the Great Wall of China, which stretches 3,945 miles. It’s not actually one unbroken span, though. Some sections aren’t connected, and there are redundant branches that are roughly parallel to the main structure. It reminds me of your own personal Great Wall, which is monumental yet permeable, strong in some ways but weak in others, daunting to the casual observer but less so to those who take the time to study it. Now is an excellent time to take inventory of that wall of yours. Is it serving you well? Is it keeping out the influences you don’t want but allowing in the influences you do want? Could it use some renovation? Are you willing to reimagine what its purpose is and how you want it to work for you in the future? LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): The Arctic Monkeys are British rockers who have produced five studio albums, which together have sold almost five million copies. Rolling Stone magazine called their first album, released in 2003, the 30th greatest debut of all time. Yet when they first formed in 2002, none of them could play a musical instrument. I see the current era of your life, Leo, as having a similar potential. How might you start from scratch to create something great? VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Alan Turing (1912-1954) was a British mathematician and pioneering computer scientist. After World War II broke out, he got worried that the German army might invade and occupy England, as it had done to France. To protect his financial assets, he converted everything he owned into bars of silver, then buried them underground in the

countryside north of London. When the war ended, he decided it was safe to dig up his fortune. Unfortunately, he couldn’t recall where he had put it, and never did find it. Let’s draw a lesson from his experience, Virgo. It’s fine if you want to stash a treasure or protect a secret or safeguard a resource. That’s probably a sensible thing to do right now. But make sure you remember every detail about why and how you’re doing it. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22): Even if you are not formally enrolled in a course of study or a training program, you are nevertheless being schooled. Maybe you’re not fully conscious of what you have been learning. Maybe your teachers are disguised or unwitting. But I assure you that the universe has been dropping some intense new knowledge on you. The coming week will be an excellent time to become more conscious of the lessons you have been absorbing. If you have intuitions about where this educational drama should go next, be proactive about making that happen. SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): You now have a special ability to detect transformations that are happening below the threshold of everyone else’s awareness. Anything that has been hidden or unknown will reveal itself to your gentle probes. You will also be skilled at communicating your discoveries to people who are important to you. Take full advantage of these superpowers. Don’t underestimate how pivotal a role you can play as a teacher, guide, and catalyst. The future success of your collaborative efforts depends on your next moves.

Sugree Charoensuk Mahidol University’s College of Music celebrated its 20th anniversary in September. The dean, Dr. Sugree Charoensuk, 62, shares with us the story of how he founded the faculty, as well as his scathing views on Thailand’s politics, education and the nation’s dire need for creativity.

I grew up in a very musical family. My father used to sing folk songs every day with his friends after work, and that had a big impact on me from a young age. My dad told me he didn’t mind what I chose to study, as long as I appreciated music. He was more worried about me appreciating music than my studies. I used to be a traveling musician, playing trumpet and saxophone for a lot of different bands. On my travels, I noticed that Thailand does not really have a good music school. That’s why I left to study music in America. For a while, I thought I’d never come back. When I was 32, I felt like I’d already died. I had the degree I wanted and a good-paying job, but I didn’t know what to do with all my money. It was like everything I did was meaningless. I had to ask myself what I wanted, and where I would be of most use.

I wanted to stay in America, but America had no use for me. You could throw a rock anywhere in the USA and hit someone with a doctorate in music. That’s why I decided to come back home, where my knowledge and skills could be appreciated. My mission was and still is to make the College of Music a place that people will regret not ever visiting. To achieve this, I must produce only the best and brightest; a place worthy of the ears of gods and angels. Skilled musicians used to receive only compliments, flowers and applause. You can’t feed your family with any of those things. Changing that into money, that’s what I do. I need to make sure that my students, no matter where they go to perform, are of the utmost quality. Quality leads to credibility, and credibility means people are willing to pay for a performance.

I’m only here to do my best. I don’t care what other people think of me or what I do. As long as I continue to work to the best of my abilities, sooner or later, people will see my work for what it is and change their perceptions by themselves.

vagrants, I’ve not only had to produce highly skilled musicians, but also good, productive members of society. I believe I’ve done a pretty good job of both.

Thailand’s single biggest flaw is Thai people.

If your best isn’t enough, then that’s that. You don’t need to cater to anyone’s vision of what you should be. Love yourself just the way you are. Be clear and firm on who you are, and the people who see the value in that will come around. You don’t have to care about the people who don’t. Music is a scholar’s trade. In order to fight against the social belief that music is a trade for beggars and

NEEDS...

Thailand’s single biggest f law is Thai people. They simply refuse to realize that the world around them has changed. Thai education is still in the same sorry, primitive state it’s always been in, only teaching students to endlessly memorize and parrot back information. Smart people in Thailand tend to be corrupt, while good people tend to be stupid. Neither can help this country move forward.

Thai education has no place for people who break the rules, which is a shame, since most of the time those students are the most creative ones. Our students are taught to listen and follow. Anyone who steps out of that thin line is immediately seen as a delinquent and their intelligence is viewed as a sign of disrespect. Creativity is dying among the youth of Thailand. There’s little innovation, only people waiting for instructions. I try to put a bigger emphasis on creativity here. Sure, it is still necessary for students to listen and follow, but I also try to steer my students away from that. After all, innovation can only be achieved by breaking the rules. Students need to be taught to have a sense of self. There’s no need for everyone to be held to the same standard, discouraging diversity and individuality. No one should have to be like anyone else.Interview by Monruedee Jansuttipan and Kanin Srimaneekulroj
