You are here. We can tell. We’ve got a wedding booked every weekend, next Wednesday we will clog some waterways with biowaste to thank a river goddess, and BK Magazine is doing roundups about places with outdoor air-conditioning. (Zuma, Vogue Lounge, the polar ice caps thank you for your noble attempts to refresh the atmosphere.) What a great time to be in Thailand. Bangkok just doesn’t get more romantic than this. Winter, you aren’t just about that noticeable drop in temperature from 35 degrees to 32 degrees. You aren’t just a season where our shops sell clothes we could never ever wear under this latitude. You’re a state of mind. As the Indonesian haze makes way for a cool breath of smog from China’s coal mines, we all join hands to celebrate love and forget about color politics, the global jihad, our very own North Korea-style purge, the middle income trap, household debt, the BMA’s rampant corruption, bad traffic, STDs, slavery and the economic collapse of our rural heartland. Screw all that! Peace on earth! One love! You, Winter, are also the season of beer parks, when colleagues spend way too much time together. That means it’s also a good time to review videos on what constitutes sexual consent. The short version: if one of you doesn’t want to ride a bicycle, it is OK to shout, “But I’m asking you super nicely!” if you then throw up and pass out. Everyone should then pretend the whole thing didn’t happen. Winter is kind that way. It’s a time for forgiveness. Winter knows the year-end can be stressful. But there’s nothing like a tower of watery lager to take someone’s mind off that big year-end project they should have started two months ago—the one they told their boss is “nearly done.” It’s OK. No one else has their shit together in this town. And here at BK, we fully expect to get Christmas dinner press releases as late as Dec 26. No worries. They are totally safe with us. It’ll be our little secret. No one will know about them. Ever. Yes, Winter. You are definitely our favorite season. We wish you weren’t so short, but if Loy Krathong has taught us anything, it’s that size doesn’t matter and good things usually last two minutes, three tops. Pull up a folding chair, pour yourself a cool one, the cover band is about to play Getsunova’s “Stay.” How appropriate. We were about to ask that you stick around a little longer. Love, The People of Bangkok

upfront HOT OR NOT
Hot: TCDC lives
Not: GTH dies
“Creativity and quality” weren’t the first words on our lips after watching I Fine Thank You Love You, but they’re the reasons being cited by founding GTH partner Hub Ho Hin as to why they’d rather take the film studio to its grave than float it on the Thai stock market. And on the topic of creativity, the junta debated in parliament last week whether the TCDC really warrants B500 million in public spending every year, thus setting light to a fire of social media anger. You can take our freedom, but you’ll never take our Eames coffee-table books!

Hot: Coincidence

Not: Questions
We’re really not supposed to talk about this one, so we better tread carefully here. When two out of the three… wait, that’s not it. We can’t help but hear alarm bells when the guys who… OK, no, we’re on risky ground here again. The thing is, you’d think they’d be keeping tighter watch on such high-profile… no, no, no, no, no. On second thoughts, probably best we keep quiet.
Hot: The Face
Not: The Voice
Were you getting fed up of watching aspiring singers belt out luk-thung renditions of everything? Yeah, we’re with you. That’s why we’ve switched to sassy celebrity mentors arguing and beautiful young things strutting down runways to pose for the camera. Kudos to Kantana this time. #strong
INTERVIEW Apichet “Ma-daew” Atilattana, the 16-year-old kid from Khon Kaen now known as the Thai Ban Fashionista, is coming to Bangkok on Fri Nov 27 for an exhibition at Alliance Francaise (see Art, page 29). Since images of his high-fashion-referencing outifts made from everyday objects, from loincloths to chicken cages, went viral, he’s gained over 190,000 followers on Facebook. Here, BK talks with him to find out how it all began, and what difference to his life fame has made. How has your life changed since your pictures went viral? Things have changed a lot. People on the street recognize me and want to take selfies with me. I have a fanclub of both locals and foreigners too. It got hacked by someone asking for US$200 to get my account back. I never gave him what he wanted, instead creating a new account and urging my fans to report the old one. Were you looking for fame when you started to post pictures of your outfits? Certainly not. I just liked playing with clothes and fabrics. But I have benefited greatly from fame. This is beyond what I could have imagined. Have you had any job offers?
Hot: Real dining
Not: Fine dining
We’ve been having an existential crisis. After 15 years of covering this city’s brightest chefs and glitziest restaurants, we realized we’re living a lie. It’s not like we go to Robuchon or Bo.lan more than twice a year. Which is why this week we’re spoiling you with a list of places we seriously do visit all the time. And which we really love (see page 20).
Of course! I have had many opportunites to be featured on TV. I’m currently shooting my first TV series as a main character who is a baan na or rural designer just like me. Hopefully it will be on air by the beginning of next year. Also, I will soon appear on international TV programs in Japan and the Philippines.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

Do you have a plan for the future? I sure would like to be a designer, but it’s not my only dream. I love singing and playing guitar as well. Anyway, I’m just focusing on my work for now. People keep asking me if I will transform into female or not; the answer is I don’t want to be a girl. Boys are boys and girls are girls. I’m happy being like this. I just want to be whatever I want to be. That’s all. When did you begin creating outfits? Since I was young I’ve liked playing with clothes of any kind. I really wanted to walk like a model but didn’t have any fashionable clothing to wear. That’s why I decided to make my own. What was your first creation? I made my first collection five years ago from the mosquito net and blankets in my bedroom. It included about 12 evening dresses. I managed everything by myself, from designing the dresses to recording the video. It was very fun. Oh, there is actually a clip on my Facebook. [ow.ly/T0Yqd] giveaways, updates, stories
facebook.com/bkmagazine
How do you make your own outfits? I just tie things and mix them together because sewing creates a dead-end. For example, I can still use all the blankets and mosquito nets after I’ve finished playing with them. I’ve never spent a single baht on creating an outfit; I only use what I already have. Does your family help you with this? Sometimes my mom asks around and borrows some material such as baskets or chicken cages from our neighbors. She is so proud of me, and keeps telling my story to her friends. My dad has been helping me with photoshoots lately, too. Who inspires you? Honestly, I don’t have any specific idol. I barely know designers and stars. But I like watching fashion shows on both television and online just to learn how models walk. All the outfits I make are my own ideas. Market Days The winter months are when Bangkok’s cool crowds head outdoors to shop, mingle and chill. Here are the best markets coming your way. By Lily Kittisrikangwan
Art Box
Noise Market Best for: Live indie music Lovers of the slow life and live music will converge on the Old Town for the return of this much-loved market. Taking over the lawns of Museum Siam, the two-day festival will comprise music shops run by the Bangkok-based indie bands themselves, plus around 100 arts and crafts stalls, cassette and vinyl stores, pop-up book shops and some small decor vendors.
Film Screenings This year sees the very first Bangkok Underground Film Festival screening unconventional pieces from local filmmakers in the museum’s super chilled-out, open-air amphitheater. From 7pm-midnight.

Best for: Slow-life atmosphere A collaboration between well-known Thai photographers, bloggers, and art and craft types, including Manee Meejai and Sahred Toy, this market puts the focus on inspirational, self-made brands that have risen to success. Taking over 25,000 sq meters of the defunct Wonderland Fun Park, these two days will be filled with art and market festivities under an "American Indian" theme. That means lots of white tents, cute handicraft products, illustrations and photography—though we hope there won’t be too many Native American headdresses on display (leave that for Wonderfruit).

Best for: Crafty workshops The name of the fair actually stands for Movement, Aid and Passion. Organizers are positioning it as a non-mass market, announcing lots of workshops, on top of the usual flea market offerings. They’ve also got an on-site dog park, dubbed “Pets’ Ville,” with activities and stalls dedicated to your doggy companions. Proceeds will go to The Voice Foundation. Container Market Best for: Cute design products The intimate, minimalist flea market on the Thonburi side of the river focuses on cute accessories and home decor products. There is a strictly no-food policy, but the cafes at this Ratchapreuk community mall are really cute. The atmosphere is Instagram-friendly too (think a smaller version of Artbox). If you miss this one, they've also promised to return in December.
NYLON HIGH STREET FESTIVAL A chilled-out food zone on the rooftop and stalls selling celebrities’ prized possessions. The Nylon Scholarship zone brings together creative works by students, from art and music to design products. A great opportunity for the young generation of Thai artisans to exhibit their artwork and design products.

GOLDEN MOUNT TEMPLE FAIR For something more traditional, head over to Phra Nakorn for the annual temple fair, this year set to take place every evening from now through Nov 27. The streets around Wat Saket will be lined up with stalls selling Thai delicacies and local games with lots of prizes to be won. Some of the roads will be closed for pedestrians. A great opportunity to make merit at the Golden Mount, if you’ve still not been.
Best for: Photo ops Although the organizers have been working on smaller projects throughout the year, nothing quite beats the hype of this market that launched at the end of 2014. Returning to the awesome original venue, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Bangkok Docklands Company Limited, the outdoor festivities will feature pop-up cafes, art installations and designers' stores, all amid the chilled-out riverside atmosphere we fell in love with. They're also taking over two docks this year (plus live bands on a ship!). Here’s hoping they’ve got the safety issues completely worked out this time.

For the past couple years the T77 Sansiri Community has been hosting this outdoor market where shops and pop-up stores take over the scenic San Samran bridge. This year’s will be divided into six zones: food, stardust, trend, art and craft, pet and family.

PHUKET
Insider Rates The charming, Sino-Portuguese-style U Zenmaya (www.uzenmayaphuket.com), situated on the picturesque Kalim Beach, is rolling out a high-season special. Through Dec 22, Thai residents (yes, expats, you’re included too) can stay in a superior room for B3,999 (originally B4,424) per night. Sure, it’s not a huge discount, but it’s the high season! Plus, the package does include the U Hotels chain’s signature concept of allowing guests to personalize their stay by choosing their own pillow type, tea, soap and music—as well as complimentary breakfast available 24 hours a day.
Bold and Blocky Phuket has been welcoming new hotels left and right lately. The newest of which is the bold and blocky-looking Hotel Ikon (www. hotel-ikon.com) on Karon Beach. It might look oddly functional, but fans of stark modernism will appreciate the minimal decor and beachside location. The hotel boasts 98 rooms equipped with all the mod-cons, from high-speed Wi-Fi to modern rain showers. Room types range from a 34-sq-meter superior to a 43-sq-meter Ikon triple, with rates from around B2,500 per night.
KANCHANABURI
Float On
X2 River Kwai (x2resorts.com/ resorts/river-kwai) has just unveiled six brand new industrial-chic floating cabins—and there’s not a bamboo raft in sight. Perched on the surface of the Kwai Noi River, the new 65-sq-meter XFloat Cabins are made from environmentally-friendly rubberwood boards and come with fish tank-style floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the calm Kanchanaburi countryside. An upper deck (dubbed the “moon deck”) allows you to make the most of the clear, starry sky. Despite being on the water, the cabins aren’t short on quality and share the same amenities as their land counterparts, including luxury bathtub, Bose soundsystem, Wi-Fi and king bed. The new additions join the resort’s existing eight cabins. Rates start at B6,699 per night, inclusive of a daily breakfast. Other facilties include a riverfront infinity pool and library.
TOKYO
Fully Booked At first glance, Tokyo’s Book and Bed (www.bookandbedtokyo. com) looks just like your average (albeit well-stocked) bookstore. The difference is you can actually spend the night there. Functioning as a bookstore by day, you can stop by and pick from a wide range of English publications (carefully selected by the reputable Shibuya Publishing & Booksellers) by appointment only from 1-7pm daily. You can also read yourself to sleep by reserving one of the beds, tucked snugly behind the bookshelves. Rates start at an affordable B1,022 on weekdays and B1,313 during the weekends. There are also bunk-style capsules available for the same price.

Craft Denim One of Bangkok’s most trusted (and affordable) jeans makers has just launched a custom line. Now in its soft launch, Craft Your Own Jeans by Nama Denim gives customers the opportunity to make their own ideal pair of jeans. The process starts with the fit (skinny, slim, straight, workwear or you can even bring in your existing fave pair of jeans), then you can choose from a selection of Japanese selvedge denim fabrics that are designed to look better with age. Other customizable details include pocket lining, back pocket, rivets and more. Prices range from B4,900-8,900, and production takes around one week. 2/F, Shop 2088, Terminal 21, Sukhumvit Soi 19, 08-989-2723. Open daily 10am-10pm. BTS Asoke. www. fb.com/namadenim

FASHION
Go Team Starting out as an online men’s fashion shop, young streetwear label Boyplain just opened a proper boutique at Terminal 21 and simultaneously rolled out its first full collection for fall/winter 2015. Taking inspiration from 1950s Americana and Ivy League colleges—plus a fair dose of Korean preppy fashion—the Heartthrobs collection deals in sharp cuts, plaids and stripes, and embroidered badges. Varsity jackets, tees, long-sleeve jumpers and high-waisted, wide-legged trousers all come in familiar collegiate colors— highlights include the Tylor (B2,990), a graphic knitted long-sleeve pullover, and Kelvin (B3,390), a navy bomber jacket with checkered pattern. 2/F, Terminal 21, Sukhumvit Soi 19, 02-115-0252. The Japan Institute for Design Promotion (JDP) has teamed up with Shane Suvikapakornkul of Serindia Gallery and Hardcover bookstore to launch a new boutique dedicated to award-winning design from Japan’s Good Design (or G Mark) Award. Good Design Store looks as much like an art gallery as it does a shop, with products carefully displayed alongside explanatory notes. The selection comes mostly from Japanese designers (of course), ranging from iconic pieces like Sori Yanagi’s 1996 Butterfly Stool (B24,000), to newer designs such as the Kisaragi dining chair (B52,300) by Hida Sangyo and the super-cool Urushi card case (B8,200) by Kirimoto Wooden Craft Factory. G Mark-awarded Thai design joins the space, too, with affordable items Such as Sign of Siam’s woven Never 4 clutch (B325). 4/F, Central Embassy, 1031 Phloen Chit Rd., 02-160-5686. BTS Phloen Chit

You’ll also find a special collection of T-shirts that Jitsing designed for imaginary bands made using his signature laser-cut technique (prices start at B900) and bearing his own likeness. For fall/winter, Kwankao’s There’s Something About Rhythm collection takes inspiration from the classic song by Thai big band Soontaraporn and interprets it with 1930s-referencing classic design elements. Draping gives a feminine look, while the color palette moves from girly pale tones to deep ruby red and navy blue on sexier pieces like the strapless maxi dress and halter-neck dress.
With its unique, Goth-leaning identity, this brand interprets rock culture into daily-wear for fall/winter ’15. Pins, chains, skulls, flowers and rips add attitude to a look that’s part romantic, part rock ‘n’ roll.
Now in its fourth year, Patinya is the womenswear brand of the beauty editor of Marie Claire magazine. Her classic casual-wear is full of details and can easily be matched with the brand’s past seasons.

This Thonglor shop is run by three ladies who have all launched their own fashion labels. Here, they select their favorite local and international items sticking to a working women’s theme (plus some men’s accessories). WONDERFRUIT 2015 BRINGS FESTIVAL-GOERS TOGETHER WITH THE SHARING NEIGHBOURHOOD
Returning to The Fields of Siam Country Club, Pattaya, on Dec 17-20, Wonderfruit Festival 2015 aims to foster a creative, nurturing community that celebrates the wonders of music, art and sustainable living. In keeping with that philosophy, Wonderfruit presents The Sharing Neighbourhood, an extension of SC ASSET’s “Farm Rak: The Seeding Friendship Project” that sought to bring neighbors closer together through home gardening. Similarly, The Sharing
Neighbourhood is a designated area of the festival where visitors can come together for creative workshops to share skills, meet new people and learn from one another. The zone promises workshops from three talented skill sharers. Join interior designer and renowned craftsman Sarran to learn how to create stylish hats using natural materials, discover the basics of portrait sketching and watercolors with noted illustrator Kru Parn who will be teach-
ing the basics of portrait painting using free-form sketching and watercolor, and create handicraft toys and household items from recycled material with creative collective Pew. Wonderfruit and SC ASSET’s The Sharing Neighbourhood promises an interactive and enriching opportunity to be creative while making new friends among the nurturing community of one of Thailand’s most anticipated art festivals.

bites & blends NEW CAFE
Furnished Feast Amid the pared-back, industrial-chic setting of Silom’s newly-opened Casa Pagoda, Luka Cafe rolls out a small, breakfast-heavy menu. Chef Sirote Udomthongsuk, who boasts stints working for big names Savelberg, Gaggan and Water Library, serves up highlights like the light breakfast burrito wrap (B170), comprising quinoa, scrambled egg, cheese, sausage, tomato salsa, avocado and their own “Thai chipotle” salsa, grilled cheese (B140) served with a thick tomato soup, and French toast (B160). There’s also a decent list of tea (one of the owners is also behind bottled tea company Tea Atelier) starting at B120/pot, plus some very good coffee (from B80). 64/1 Pan Rd., 02-6378558. Open Mon-Fri 10am-7pm and Sat-Sun 8:30-7pm
FOOD TRUCK
Smoke on the Road The latest addition to the Rocket empire sees Lady Brett take its barbecued bites on the road, Smoked, a large, fully-equipped, red cow-patterned truck. Instead of charcoal grilling, they smoke the meat with coconut and oak wood chips at 80-120 degrees Celsius for 8-12 hours. Options include pulled pork shoulder (B190) and chopped chicken (B170) sandwiches, and, our pick, the juicy beef brisket with Southern-style biscuit and onion gravy (B250). Vegetarians aren’t forgotten, either, as the chef also does a sandwich comprising grilled eggplant, garlic aioli, red cabbage and kale slaw, tomato and red onion (B160). Currently parked in front of the JTC building, Silom Rd., Mon-Fri, 11am-5pm. Follow the truck’s location at www.smokedtruck.com.
NEW BAR
Cigar Loft Lurking in the rafters above the Cohiba Atmosphere cigar and spirits boutique, The Balvenie Lounge offers 300-sq-meters of whiskey-specializing rustic charm. They’re a little cagey about exact prices, but will say that drinks start at B500 per glass (for that, you’re looking at the 12-year-olds from Glenfarclas, Cragganmore and Balvenie) and go all the way up to B5,000, for which you’ll get some serious, triple-decade-old stuff like Old & Rare Port Ellen 35. But the exhaustive menu doesn’t limit itself to just Scotch. There are plenty of Japanese names too before you get down to Calvados, Port, Amegnac and other drinks befitting a heavy, smoky environment. 2/F, Cohiba Atmosphere, 63/3 Soi Ruam Rudi, 02-650-9006. Mon-Sat 11am-midnight
ON THE BAR Black Beer’d The buzz: This new addition to the arty 9:53 Community Mall is the brother bar of fellow beer specialist White Beer’d at Crystal Design Center, and offers a narrower, more specific selection of craft beers. The decor: The tiny black box-like interior mixes black-coated steel with wooden furniture. Naturally, there’s also a bunch of vintage bulbs and beer-loving quotes strewn about the place. Pull up a bar stool to talk shop with the tap master, or grab a beer and head to the outdoor terrace (where you can order from other bars in the mall, too). Bonus: there’s a free pool table.
16
The music: The indie/electro-pop soundtrack that covers the entire mall is on point: think Tame Impala, Broken Bells or Breakbot. The crowd: Craft beer heads looking for somewhere more intimate to imbibe. The drinks: We like that the place sticks to what it knows; that means only nine craft beers on tap, though this rotates almost every week. When we dropped by, stout seemed to be the order of the day, with options like Stockholm’s Omnipollo Hypnopompa Imperial Stout (B380/ pint) and Utah’s Epic Imperial Stout (B280), but they say this won’t
always be the case. You can also try the first keg in Bangkok of Australian craft brewery Holgate’s Dunkel Weizenbock (B220). Stay tuned for meet-the brewer events. The food: Burgers and grill. Try the beef burger in a brioche bun with beer sauce (B280, or B250 for pork). Pork loin (B250), grilled Australian rib eye (B480) and Thai-style salmon zaab (B220) are the (relatively) carbfree options. Milkshakes range from the alcohol-free Even More Peanut (B180), a mix of vanilla ice-cream, salted caramel and peanut butter, to the boozy Bourbon Vanilla (B220). Vasachol Quadri

Keep it Secret There’s a drinking revolution going on behind closed doors. Here’s how and where to get a taste of Bangkok’s coolest secret bars. By BK Editorial
Q&A
Havana Social
Havana Social
NEW! The story: The city’s newest clandestine drinking den comes from the team behind Nana nightlife haunts Above Eleven and Charcoal. Going for a 1940s-50s Havana high-life vibe, this is Cuban pastiche done right: shuttered windows, spare lighting and crumbling walls spruced up with colorful cement tiles, murals and live Afro-Cuban music.
Jing Jok Bar
The crowd: Familiar faces from Bangkok’s DJ and dining crowds (and the crowds that follow them). The poison: Rum, and lots of it, featuring the occasional creative flourish courtesy of Joseph Boroski. The Cuba Libre (Bacardi black, angostura bitters, cola and kaffir lime, B260) is served with chunky Coca-Cola ice cubes, while Between the Sheets (Bacardi Black, Hennessy VS, Grand Marnier, lime, pomegranate grenadine, B300) comes in two mismatched cocktail glasses, one sweet and one sour, and requires you to rather daintily sip at both for the full effect. The how: The entrance is hidden down a small soi opposite Fraser Suites on Sukhumvit Soi 11, past a couple dubious massage parlors. Find the telephone booth labeled “Telefono,” then call the place (087-066-7711 on your modern-day smartphone) for the night’s unique entry code.
Q&A
NEW! The story: This speakeasy-style bar comes courtesy of the local cocktail specialists behind many of the best drink menus in town (the now-defunct Sugar Ray, Barka). It succeeds where many others fail to conjure the feeling of a secret drinking society. The long, narrow space replicates a classic railway carriage dining car with a ‘20s New York vibe. Just 10 leather-upholstered seats lining the well-polished bar. The crowd: The city’s trust-fund hipsters, migrating from Ekkamai to Asoke. The poison: The barman specializes in personalized drinks. If you want to play it safe, you can stick to the classics, here jazzed up with uncommon ingredients, as well as infusions and smoke. The Rough Negroni (B390), made from homemade gin, carries a strong hint of pine wood and citrus even though there’s no orange peel for garnish, while the Comte De Monte Cristo (B420) has an interesting nutty aroma, based on port wine infused with Ethiopian coffee and toasted pecan, mixed with Amaro Montenegro and Diplomatico Exclusiva 12 Year Old rum. The owners say eventually they will offer a menu of up to 100 signature drinks. The how: “Find the green marble wall down a little alley off Asoke Road.” That’s what we were told on our first visit. Easier said than done. Our advice? Keep an eye out for the abandoned-looking building before Case Study Cafe (Sukhumvit Soi 21); you won’t really notice the green marble in the dark, but you’re basically there.
18
J. Boroski
J. Boroski The story: Mixologist Joseph Boroski is a bit of an institution. He’s trained the staff and created the cocktail lists for a lot of the fivestar hotels in town, for all of Ashley Sutton’s bars, for Quince, etc. But last year he set up his own shop at the end of a dark, damp alley. The place’s design is by Sutton, and it’s absolutely stunning. The crowd: The same as Q&A, with added expats.
Belle’s Room
Belle’s Room
The poison: Each cocktail here is handcrafted for you only and there is no menu. Is it worth the effort? Well, at B620 it better be. But how does this sound: a Sazerac made with XO cognac and Hudson rye, with a dash of Hella citrus bitters from Brooklyn. You can’t even find half those ingredients in this town!
The story: At the same time as the Whisgars cigar lounge on Silom Road welcomed the second outlet of beer specialists Craft in early 2015, it also unveiled this speakeasy-style cocktail bar.
The how: Walk down the little alley between Thonglor soi 5 and 7, spot Black Amber Barber Shop and then find the perfect industrial-looking door that doesn’t quite fit in with all the Chinese shophouse shutters.
The poison: Here, you can expect tailor-made cocktails: pick your base spirit (mostly supplied by William Grant & Son, like Hendrick’s gin, Sailor Jerry rum and Monkey Shoulder whiskey) and let the barman work his magic.
U.N.C.L.E
The how: Head to Whisgars (981 Silom Rd.)—that’s the easy part. There, access is hidden behind the wooden wall of the main room with a little walkway leading you to a sizable Victorian-inspired bar.
The story: First came Rocket, whose menu is little more than coffee, eggs Benedict and rye bread sandwiches. Then next door’s proper restaurant Lady Brett. But Sathorn’s mini-hipster enclave actually has a third feather to its cap, this wonderfully moody lounge that’s all chocolate tones, leather upholstery, circular booths and warm lighting. The crowd: A well-dressed—and surreptitious—clientele worthy of the Mad Men-esque setting . The poison: U.N.C.L.E packs a stellar cocktail list, and is known for having some of the best—and priciest—drinks in town. Mixologist Sebastian De La Cruz’s cocktails go for a decadent tiki theme with lots of artisanal rums and tequilas. They also serve some tasty steak and mussels The how: It’s located above Lady Brett (149 Sathorn Soi 12, 02-6350405), and accessible through a very speakeasy-worthy series of stairs and backdoors.
The crowd: Whisgars’ usual motley crew of foreign professionals and local hotshots.
Jing Jok Bar The story: This tiny bar is arguably Thonglor’s most under-the-radar hidey-hole. In fact, the decor isn’t Thonglor at all: brick walls, a long white bar and a few stools. The name, Jing Jok, translates to gecko, which the Japanese believe brings charm, happiness and safety. The crowd: A fun-loving party crew that’s part Khao San, part Soi 11—turned up to 11. The poison: As if the cocktails aren’t potent enough, you can opt for the all-you can-drink promotion (women B400/hour, men B600/hour) covering whiskey (including Black Label, Chivas Regal, Jameson), beers (Singha, Heineken), wine, shots and assorted cocktails. Be warned: The owner may ply you with shots. The how: Ever dropped by that 7-Eleven right by Penny’s Balcony (Thonglor Soi 16)? Find the Kasikorn ATM machine and you find the stairs to Jing Jok.

RESTAURANTS
Where We Eat BK Magazine’s editorial staff don’t always eat fancy food. Here’s where we eat on a regular basis. By BK Editorial
This place ticks all the boxes for Anne Jansuttipan Features Associate being a good old-fashioned Chinese restaurant: old tables, dirty wooden chopping block, and century-old soup pot that looks like its never been emptied. Then there’s the auntie who screams your order from the second floor. The braised goose is the star, but I really love their stir-fried vegetable dishes too. They’re better than anywhere else in town! 2/2 Soi Convent, Silom Rd.,02-2356362, 02-235-0388
Boon Pochana There aren’t that many places in Bangkok where you can have a proper sit-down meal at 4am in the morning. Their Chinese kitchen might not be as good as the highend spots but the no-frills atmosphere and fair prices make it one of my favorites. Try deep-fried squid with salt, chili and garlic, Sichuan-style fried bean curd and stirfried string beans.
Roong Rueng Super easy and super delicious pork nood les just a soi away Bonnie from the chaos Sananvatananont Junior Writer of Emquartier. They provide cups of fresh lime juice to put into your noodles which really makes a difference. You might be confused at first because there are two shops next to each other that sell exactly the same thing at exactly the same price—well yeah, that’s because they’re brothers. Both taste equally good; just pick whichever one you can find a free table at. 10/3 Sukhumvit Soi 26, 02-258-6746
Sun Moon This grimy shop-house was serving up proper, Carl Dixon gloopy Chinese Deputy Editor junk food long before it became all the rage. Never mind the copious MSG, snarky service or questionable hygiene; their eggplant French fries are pretty much the most amazing thing done to vegetables ever. You’ll also have to fight a crowd of territorial aunties on weekends. 5/4 Soi Ngamduplee, Rama 4 Rd. 02-679-7019. MRT Lumpini
Vietnamese & More
Let’s face it, the thing that gets everyone going back is really the massive pile of fried garlic that’s smothered all over the grilled chicken. By the end of the meal, there’s fried garlic all over everything, and I’m OK with that.
The decor is a train-wreck of what seems to be the remnants of at least three previous restaurants, but you’ll do well to find better banh mi in Bangkok. The baguette is soft yet crunchy, fluffy yet firm. I also rate the silky banh cuon and crisp chicken salad. Bonus: the owners couldn’t be friendlier.

It’s a good outdoor place to go to when yo u ’ re s t a r vi n g b u t b o rJoy Tanitnon derline broke. Writer B219 gets you all-you-can-eat meat and veggies to throw onto your charcoal grill, whether it’s beef tenderloin, pork, chicken or seafood cooked with thick, generous lumps of butter. And there’s bacon, too. 1490/2 Sukhumvit Rd., between BTS Phra Khanong and On Nut, 02-7429416
Mama Dolores It’s a pain to get to without a car because it’s tucked all the way down Soi Yen Akat, but their food and laidback loungey seating (plus the owner’s two adorable puppies) make it worth the hike. They’ve recently upped their prices, but whatever… I’ve never had better falafel. 20 Soi Yen Akat, 080-606-0400
Sushi Hiro This is by no means the best branch of the Sushi Hiro Lily Kittisrikangwan empire, but Senior Staff Writer it’s the go-to place for those craving decent sushi on the other side of the river. You really can’t beat the salmon sashimi set (five very fatty, wholesome pieces) and the fragrant, slightly burnt engawa sushi done just right— great value if you subscribe to their LINE (the daily promos are hard to ignore!). But that also means confused waitresses and crazy long queues during peak hours. Crystal SB Ratchapreuk, Ratchapreuk Rd., 080-088-8226
Khon Meung Lop, Krua Meung Ling Students that live around Ratchathewi will think of J’Goi for really zaap Isaan food, and that’s also where most of the crowd goes late at night. I really like the Miang Pla Pao set here though, which comes with kanom jeen , two types of sauces depending on how much you can handle the chili, and plenty of veg. Other curries are also solid, and pretty authentic. It’s right by the BTS too.
Look for B Resto, at the corner of Santiphab Park. Next to it you’ve got an open-air shop-house doing amazing stewed beef and beef balls. Next to that is a shop-house doing various seafood balls with noodles. It’s the shrimp balls that I’m crazy for. I always order an extra bowl and dump it into my took yang piset (mixed special) order. You can tell a lot of shrimp goes into them, and very little flour. Gregoire Glachant Editor in Chief
Soi Rangnam, across from Kasikorn
T.S. Cuisine It always seems to draw more tourists than Thais. Maybe it’s because the food isn’t cheap, or the sad location in CocoWalk. I can’t fathom the food is to blame, though. Compared to Baan Ice, whose new Paragon branch is permanently mobbed by Bangkok’s bourgeoisie, I find T.S.’s sataw with shrimp and kuakling moo vastly superior. Spicier and less sweet, T.S. may well be too Southern for Central Thais. 89/34-35 Phayathai Rd., 02-656-6703. BTS Ratchatewi

Peng Kua Gai Chula area’s answer to Kua Gai. There was one time on a Natcha rainy day when Sanguankiattichai my family drove Junior Writer to the shop for some takeaway. The staff totally knew his job. He came to take our order and help us with parking. And when he delivered the goods, the kua gai aroma bursted into the car. I couldn’t wait till we got home to dig into the delicious noodles. Chula Soi 18, 081-899-2173
Jiew The best chicken biryani I’ve ever had. The grungy place also whips up some curries, but to be honest I haven’t even taken a look at the menu. It’s very close to my house so I always just head there for takeout. Get there before noon to ensure there’s still some left for you. Charoenkrung Soi 43, 02-266-4903
Oliver Irvine Managing Editor
The Isaan place near Surasak BTS
Someone told me the team from Nahm goes here after service and I’ve used that to justify eating here with countless visiting friends. I have no idea if it’s true but the food’s good enough to believe it. Don’t miss the barbecued beef, salted-egg somtam or delicious duck laab , washed down with Blend whiskey by the bottle. On the corner of Sathorn and Surasak Rd. BTS Surasak
Misato The counter is always thick with solo Japanese diners and the owner looks like a chef from a Miyazaki animation. Go for a working lunch and you’ll find some of the best-priced sets anywhere on Soi Thaniya (try the chirashi sushi); go on a hangover and you’ll have your pick of perfectly deep-fried ways to make everything feel good again. These guys seriously know what to do with a pork cutlet.
Liaoning Restaurant I had labeled Chinese food as tasteless, oily Vasachol Quadri and uninspiring Senior Staff Writer until going here. How wrong I was. Liaoning offers a variety of dumplings with different meat and veggie fillings, plus different cooking techniques. The stir-fried dishes are pretty tasty, too, like string beans—a proper drink-friendly choice. The best thing is that they open until 5am. 152/4-7 Silom Rd., 02-635-6536
Jae Koi You can always rely on this semi-indoor baan baan-style joint. Prepare to take the heat, though. Highlights include the tum sua puu pla ra (papaya salad with pickled crab, fermented fish and fermented rice noodle), with its balance of salty, sour and spicy. For a break from the spice, I recommend the sue rong hai (crying tiger grilled beef). 362/2-3 Phetchaburi Rd, 081-907-2664

Chairman Chef Man’s people try a modern take on the classic Hong Kong diner. The buzz: Replacing the short-lived Chef Man Express at Emquartier, Chairman goes for a '50s Hong Kong diner vibe (known as bing sutt or bing shi), serving Cantonese versions of Western food. The decor: If you’ve been to Hong Kong, you’ll know the type of place Chairman imitates: Formica tabletops, lino floor, mint green walls and a general sense that nothing’s changed in 30 years. The glisteningly new Chairman lacks the time-worn appeal of such institutions, but anyone familiar with the island city will identify the medley of cool green tones, mosaic wall tiles and iron shutters as being Hong Kong through and through. The food and drinks: Chef Man Wai Yin worked with a Hong Kong-born consultant to get the dishes right. Cafe items include the well-known bo lo bao with butter (soft bun with crunchy
22
crust, B49) and Hong Kong-style French toast (two slices of white bread with peanut butter spread dipped in eggs and fried, B120), which you can also order with Chef Man’s signature salted egg yolk lava filling (B140). On top of Hong Kong staples like honey barbecue pork rice (B160), the chefs also roll out baked egg fried rice topped with either a pork chop and tangy tomato sauce (B250) or chicken with a Macanese/Portuguese-influenced coconut curry sauce (B230). In keeping with the cafe vibe, soup noodles come served with your choice of ham and sunny side-up egg (B170), braised beef brisket (B200) and more. Also note that the portions of rice and noodles are huge. For something sweet, look no further than refreshing mango-based desserts like mango pudding (B70), mango rice roll (mango puree with rice
noodles, B95) and chilled mango puree with mango and pomelo (B110). To drink, they highlight chilled milk tea (B110) and iced red bean puree with milk (B75). Also expect the HK natives’ favorite of Coke or Sprite with ice cream (B60). Why you should care: Haute cuisine this ain’t, but there’s an undeniable charm to these idiosyncratic, deeply unfashionable dishes. Order up a milky cup of tea and enjoy. Food truck Ta’cone dishes out the much-loved Mexican bites in handy, eat-on-the-go paper cones (hence its name: taco + cone) filled with your choice of grilled chicken with charred corn (B99) or sous-vide beef (B119). The owner, Nuch Srichantranon, cut his teeth in Melbourne kitchens like Benjamin Cooper’s Chin Chin, and foregoes the trend for shredded and pulled meats in favor of chunky steak cuts. Triple Strength
Thonglor's latest coffee shop, Triple (41 Sukhumvit Soi 59, 094-405-6964), takes its beans seriously. The sibling-owners use coffee sourced from Brazil, Indonesia and Guatemala, as well as local blends, in single and double shot lattes, cappuccinos and caramel macchiatos (B75-110). They also do sin-

The Lucky Room HHHH American, Japanese. 18/9-10 Sathorn Soi 11, 090 -980 -2441. Open daily 7am-9pm. BTS Surasak. B
Located just a few minutes down the largely residential Sathorn Soi 11, this chic, two-unit shop-house stands out from the old-school surroundings with its floor-toceiling windows, and crisp, white decor. Here, bathed in natural light, the team behind tonkatsu specialist Katsu King (K Village, Digital Gateway) serves up all-day American and Japanese fare in generous portions. The mish-mash of a menu goes big on breakfast, with very mixed results. The mostly Western-style dishes include scrambled eggs with truffle and crab (B295) and DIY crabcake Benedict (B295), which comprises an English muffin, sousvide egg, Cajun hollandaise, house-made onion peach chutney and a crabcake that tastes rather disappointingly like ThaiChinese hoy jor (crab meat roll). Despite the emphasis on quality ingredients, these complex dishes fail to come together as a
Tamilnadu HHHH Indian. 5/1 Silom Soi 11, 02-235-6336. Open daily 10am-10pm. B. No alcohol
Named after the Southeast Indian state from which Silom Road’s Mariamman Temple (or Wat Kaek) draws its architectural inspiration, this 27-year-old Southern Indian restaurant deals in both vegetarian and halal non-vegetarian dishes. There’s little to distinguish it from the countless other low-rent Indian operations stretching from this part of upper Silom down to Surawong Road—the tinted windows, the sterile lighting, the steel, mess-hall-like serving dishes—but Tamilnadu has a devoted Indian-Thai clientele that ensures tables fill up quickly. Order up the masala dosa (B90) and you’ll quickly discover why. The fresh-from-the-pan rice crepe is huge and clearly cooked to order, still glistening with oil and perfectly crisp. In its center, the

whole. On the sweeter side, too, the pancakes (starting at B115) are too dense and rather bland. The so-called AmericanJapanese fusion items are also confusing, like the pork bulgogi burger (B185), which doesn’t seem to contain anything to do with Japan nor bulgogi (Korean marinated grilled meat). While the bun is pretty decent and the kimchi-mixed pork slices actually taste good on their own, the whole burger (with some cheese and a fried egg) just doesn’t seem to make a good combination. For us, you’re better off sticking to the straight-up Japanese dishes, like the Tokyo stamina beef (B225) or pork (B195) sets, in which the thinly sliced meat is cooked in a delectable sweet and sour sauce, sprinkled with sesame and topped with an onsen egg. Also, their tonkatsu (B175) is a safe bet: crispy yet tender and not at all greasy. The drinks list spans beer, coffee and juice, and we particularly like the cloudy apple juice (B75), which is produced by the restaurant’s mother company and sold here at an even lower price than in supermarkets. Though some of the food is decent enough, The Lucky Room isn’t really much of a foodie destination. But add free Wi-Fi to the ambient, sun-drenched setting and we can see why it appeals to the types of people who like to work long hours in cafes or catch up with friends over a few comfort dishes.

hefty ladle of masala potato is both filing and delicious. As is pretty much standard in restaurants like this, the sides are disconcertingly lukewarm, but the coconut and tomato pachadi (traditional Southernstyle chutneys) both pack heaps of flavor. Nearly every table at Tamilnadu can be found tucking into either the dosa or vegetarian thali sets (B180 for rice, two vegetarian dishes, curd and papadum), but there’s also a concise menu of meat curries with your choice of mutton, chicken or fish (also available in a thali at B180-250). Though we need to dig at the meat in our mutton curry (B200) from between bone and cartilage, the cheap cuts have been simmered to a point of perfect tenderness, and the gravy, while oily, tastes wellspiced. But the focus here is really on the veg dishes, to which end we reckon they could do better work with the dal samba (lentil soup) which, with its watery texture and weak spicing, tastes every bit worthy of its B50 price tag. This aside, Tamilnadu remains our pick of the neighborhood for anyone after solid, canteen-style Indian food that’ll fill you up for under B200. Don’t go looking for a beer (the short drinks menu holds nothing but teetotal options), but they’ll pour a solid lassi for B50.

Taking over Palladium Hall (10/F, Palladium World Shopping, Rachaprapop Rd.), Jonathan Davis and co. will belt out hits like “Freak on a Leash” and “A.D.I.D.A.S. WED Say Cheese Looking to step up your photography game from iPhones and selfie sticks? Head over to Photo Fair 2015 at BITEC (88 Bang Na-Trat Rd., BTS Bang Na) this Nov 25-29.
