The latest O-NET exam has once again proven that, when it comes to testing the aptitude of our students, our Ministry of Education likes to go beyond the surface. Anyone can tell you that 2+2=2 (accounting for 30-percent in kickbacks and 20-percent lost to general incompetence), but it’s much harder to forge leaders of tomorrow who can answer such soulful questions as: “Following in Thai tradition, how should boyfriends or girlfriends express their love to each other?” That’s why the Royal Thai Army is counting on 100,000 high school students to help us vote in the upcoming constitutional referendum. The army’s propaganda units have already started briefing the territorial defense students on the draft constitution, so that they can answer any questions you might have at the polling booth. Of course, we’ll have to test the Ror Dor kids to make sure they’ve been paying attention to the army’s lessons—and what better way to do that than a multiple-choice quiz? 1. What happens if you vote “no” on the new charter? a. You will go blind. b. Your parents will find out. c. You will get acne. d. The cool kids will stop talking to you. 2. What is the difference between the single ballot voting system and the previous system? a. The grass is always greener on the other side. b. A bird in hand is better than two in the bush. c. Make hay while the sun shines. d. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. 3. Why were the enshrined rights of communities from the previous constitution slashed from this one? a. Too much traveling to another city with opposite-sex friends. b. Too many people of the opposite sex meeting alone at home. c. Entire communities surfing the internet at a friend’s house until late at night. d. Communities with too many opposite-sex members. 4. If we vote “yes,” where does the junta go? a. They will put one’s arm around the other’s shoulder while shopping. e. They will sleep on a girl’s lap in public. f. They will go to the sea and spend the night together. g. They will have a meal together, then stay in power, forever and ever.

upfront HOT OR NOT

Hot: Carlos Santana

Not: Madonna

The ageless Queen of Pop bumped and gyrated her way into our hearts. But was it enough to make up for three decades of neglect? We think not. Take guitar legend Carlos Santana, for example; he not only visits Thailand every two years, but this week he will perform with our very own rock gods Carabao (see BK now, page 25). So show us the love, Madge—oh and how about a collaboration with modern-day material girl Madeaw?

INTERVIEW

Hot: Flight promos

Not: Pilot protests

This month, Nok Air was forced to cancel eight local flights after its pilots went on strike, leaving 1,000 passengers stranded at Don Mueang airport. On Valentine’s Day. Ouch. Now a month-long investigation will determine whether the pilots were forced to exceed the standard limit on flying hours. Will any of this stop us flying? Not likely. And judging by the deal-hungry mobs over at Ar-pae.com, we can’t see Nok wanting to cut flights anytime soon.

Hot: Indoor tanning

Not: Indoor skiing

So, Bangkok’s just welcomed its first tanning salon (see page 12). Cue outrage. “This is like opening an ice bar in Antarctica,” one reader posted on our Facebook page. “Let’s open a pizza parlor in Napoli,” wrote another. Weren’t these same killjoys out in force recently wanting to deprive us the exotic joys of winter breezes, 4am pizzas and indoor ski slopes? See, this is why we can’t have nice things.

Hot: Gun deaths

Not: Dengue deaths

Another week, another sad tale of some jilted lover shooting up his ex, or road rage ending with gunfire, or technical students firing at each other. In the US, gun deaths are beginning to cause public outcries. Here, nothing. And yet, recent data from the University of Washington shows Thailand is number one for guns deaths among 10 Asian countries surveyed. We’re 50 percent higher than the runner-up, the Philippines. And at 7.48 gun deaths per 100,000, we’re at double the USA.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

4

On top of all the shiny new property developments, Bangkok’s gearing up to welcome an expanded public transport network. But is our urban planning on the right track? BK chats with Niramon Kulsrisombat, Director of Urban Design and Development Center (UDDC), which is assigned by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to work on Bangkok 250 (bangkok250.org), a project to rejuvenate the city in time for its 250th birthday in 2032. How did Bangkok 250 get started? As Bangkok will turn 250 years old in 2032, the BMA is working with us to improve the city over the next 17 years. We are focusing on developing inner Bangkok and other dense residential and business areas, especially in the Old Town. We believe creativity happens by interaction and exchange. But our studies have found that old neighborhoods often lack synergy with other neighborhoods. So, connecting these neighborhoods with other parts of the city is a fundamental part of what Bangkok 250 is about. In which part of the city does UDDC see the most potential? It must be the Old Town and its riverside, which is full of diversity and history. With the rise of Silom, Sathorn and Sukhumvit, the riverside has been in decline. But next year, when the MRT’s blue line opens, it will be easier to access than ever. With more opportunities for development, people will realize you don’t need to be in Silom or Sathorn to do business anymore

bkmagazine.com

What are some upcoming projects UddC is working on? We’ve been working with the Kadeejeen community for a while, and we are now planning a Chao Phraya sky walkway and garden on the unfinished bridge structure parallel to Phra Pok Klao Bridge near Phahurat. This idea actually came from our talks with the local community. Another project is the Yannawa Riverfront, a river promenade along Charoenkrung Road. This 1.2-kilometer stretch is 85-percent-owned by state enterprises [Fish Market Organization, Bangkok Dock] and a monastery [Wat Yannawa] which means there’s more opportunity for dialogue with local communities. With the public sectors, we can really discuss about balancing the economical and public benefits of the project. The most important thing is designing it to meet the community’s needs. What do you think about the River Promenade project the BMA is proposing? It’s actually a good thing that the BMA and the government want to develop

the riverside. But we must remember that our riverside is so complex. They talk about developing it to be like Seoul or Paris. But the Chao Phraya is only 300 meters at its widest while the Han River is almost a kilometer. Also the banks of Chao Phraya are lined with old settlements, so all projects need their inhabitats’ consent. If they don’t want it, will you invoke section 44? What are the most pressing urban planning needs? We need more public spaces. Democracy and urban development go hand in hand. If there are more public spaces, people will meet and learn to understand their differences. Today everyone just goes to the malls where you meet people of the same class and political preferences. It’s impossible for people to learn to exercise tolerance for others who don’t think like them. Also, a good city should have space that lets people find happiness without the need to spend money. cover story

Just in time with the 88th Academy Awards on Feb 28, here are the 15 things we loved and hated about Thai film from the past year. By BK Editorial U

BEST FILM FREELANCE

U

BEST LEADING ACTRESS WARUNTORN PAONIL, SNAP

We hadn't seen a Thai romantic comedy with such a deep, thought-provoking edge since... well, ever. When GTH announced it would bring in cult indie director Nawapol Thamrongratanarit to make his first “mass” movie, we were a little dubious. Thankfully, the film’s mass appeal (a cool B11.6 million on its opening day alone) was not at the expense of the director’s signature style, which remained intact from the dialog down to the cinematography. The storyline, about an overworked freelance designer who falls for his doctor, also struck a raw nerve. Not a bad way for GTH to call it quits.

Kongdej Jaturanrasamee, the man behind some of our favorite films of the past two decades like Tang Wong, P-047 and Sayew, made his longawaited return with the dramatic love story of two childhood friends, Pueng and Boy, who unexpectedly reunite at a mutual friend’s wedding. The plot’s believability owes to much the performance of debutant Waruntorn Paonil, whose wearied expressions and body language capture perfectly the torture of repressed memories.

BEST LEADING ACTOR SUNNY SUWANMETHANONT, FREELANCE U

Nawapol’s casting of Sunny as his main man in Freelance was a masterstroke. And it’s testament to the actor himself that such a familiar face can remain so relatable in the role of Yoon, where 80-percent of all dialogue actually takes place inside his own head.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY SWAY, DIRECTED BY ROOTH TANG T

The debut feature film from this Thai-American director is definitely a love story of the modern age, following three couples across three cities during the time of important political events around the world. Dealing with issues of long-distance relationships, cultural differences and being caught between two worlds, this movie delivers not only a relatable plot but this past year's most sophisticated cinematography.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS T BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR DUANGJAI HIRUNSRI, THE BLUE HOUR OABNITHI WIWATTANAWARANG, The Blue Hour tells the story of quiet, bullied gay THE BLUE HOUR T

guy Tum (Atthaphan Poonsawas) and his relationship with the badass Phum (Oabnithi Wiwattanawarang) that leads to a life-changing situation. Djuangjai stars as Tum’s anti-gay mother in a role that reminds us of famous manipulative mothers like Frances McDormand in Almost Famous (2000) and Sinjai Plengpanich in Love of Siam (2007). Hers is only a brief role, but Djuangjai brings an incredible amount of tension to the screen.

6

Another main force behind The Blue Hour’s success is the complex character of Phum, played by Oabnithi Wiwattanawarang. Phum is a bad boy whose rebellious ways offer a chance of liberation for Tum. And youngster Oabnithi nails the tough-guy act with swagger to spare.

BEST DIRECTOR NAWAPOL THAMRONGRATANARIT, FREELANCE I

The obvious choice. Despite Nawapol’s past success as part of the screenwriter team for the smash hit Bangkok Traffic Love Story (2009), we were afraid that going with GTH would stifle his bold, creative streak. We were glad to be proven wrong.

cover story BEST ADAPTATION HOW TO WIN AT CHECKERS (EVERY TIME) Y

The American-Korean director’s controversial gay film received rave reviews from Bangkok to Berlin and was chosen as Thailand's representative for the foreign-language category at the upcoming Oscars, though it missed out on being nominated. Adapted from two short stories written by Rattawut Lapcharoensap—“At the Cafe Lovely” and “Draft Day”—the film explores the politics, drugs and prostitution that lie behind the relationship between two brothers.

T

BEST DOCUMENTARY THE DOWN

T

Directed by Wongthanong Chainarongsingha, The Down wins our pick for most inspiring Thai film of the year. The documentary follows the lives of five Thai teenagers living with Down's Syndrome and reminded us of the value of living in the moment. Safe to say, it had us smiling along the way, while also secretly shedding a tear or two.

This romantic comedy follows a guy named Kong (Aaron "Dan" Ramnarong) who travels back in time to the year 1995 when Thailand’s alternative music scene was at its peak. OK, the subject matter is a little far-fetched, but it does make for one hell of a soundtrack: from Proud’s “Ter Kue Kwam Fun” and See Tao Ter’s “Yung Jum” through to Modern Dog’s “Chewit.”

BEST THAI FILM YOU CAN'T SEE RAK TI KHON KAEN (CEMETERY OF SPLENDOR) Y

BEST SOUNDTRACK 2538 ALTER MA JIB (ALTERNATIVE)

THE SO BAD IT’S GOOD AWARD MAY WHO?

I

They say, don’t judge a book by its cover. But we can’t help it—we judged this GTH comedy as soon as we heard the name. May Who? tells the story of a high-school student who shoots electricity when she gets excited. Pretty dumb, right? Turns out the whole thing is kind of fun, with a cast that takes it to the next level. This is kind of what we hoped for from Suckseed (2011).

Very much in the style of his Palme d'Or-winning film Uncle Boonmee Who May Recall Past Lives, this sto r y h a s eve r y t h i n g you'd expect from an Apichatpong film: unconventional narratives, m e rg i n g of p a st a n d present lives, de ja vu and unanswered questions that linger with you long after viewing. The movie captures the lives of soldiers in a countryside hospital suffering from an illness that leaves them in a state between nightmare and delirium. Sadly, this will be the director's last film set in Thailand—and he doesn’t want it to even screen it here, fearing government reprisals.

BEST QUOTE “PAI KA P’SUCHAT,” FREELANCE I

P’Suchat, the motorcycle taxi guy in Nawapol’s Freelance who never talks and never, ever takes off his helmet, is a symbol of our fast-paced modern world. His only role is to zip off at the command of boss-lady Jae (Violette Wautier), and yet his legacy lives on nowadays in hashtag form—used by pushy hotel PRs and indie event organizers alike as a definitive closing statement.

U THE SO BAD IT’S BAD THE EYECANDY AWARD THANAPOB “TOR” LEERATANAKAJORN, AWARD MAEBIA/THE BLACK DEATH MAY WHO? U

The Hormones troublemaker tends to make good choices with his acting. Except in May Who?, where he plays a high-school senior with all the complexity of a cartoon character. Anyway, he still looks good, just like that senior we used to have a crush on in high school.

To be honest, we’re usually big fans of Mom Noi (ML Pandevanop Devakul) and his uncanny knack for remaking everything in an over-thetop Michael Bay style. But since U Mong Pa Mueng in 2011, things just haven’t been quite the same. Of his two films this year, Maebia is one endless sex scene, while The Black Death is basically the Ayutthaya version of Resident Evil.

MOST HOMOEROTIC FILM: RED WINE IN THE DARK NIGHT AND WATER BOYY (TIED) T

2015 will probably go down as the year of Thai gay films (some excellent, some just blah). We no longer need to rely on Poj Arnon for topless guys and aggressive sex scenes. Fans of Twilight had better watch Tanwarin Sukkhapisit’s Red Wine in the Dark Night, the story of a guy who has a real “relationship” with a vampire. Meanwhile, Water Boyy follows the story of two swimmers—and, funnily enough, pretty much everyone one else stays topless all film too.

The Spiffy Dapper

SINGAPORE

Secret Sips Basements, unmarked doors, hidden staircases and other exciting concealments—here are Singapore’s top secret bars to drink like an in-the-know local. Gibson

28 HongKong Street

One of Singapore’s most famous bars (and a proud member of the World’s 50 Best Bars list) has a completely unadorned entrance and blackout velvet drapes protecting the sexy, low-light vibe inside. Once you get in, though, the staff is friendly, the signature cocktails are lengthy and delicious and the truffle mac n’ cheese balls are the stuff of legend. Don’t be that fool who takes flash photos or you will get schooled.

The Horse’s Mouth

This one even comes with a secret entrance through a ramen bar. Whether it’s using sake or other Japanese ingredients, the muted space is a backdrop for inventive concoctions. Even the interiors are subtle and discreet with splashes of color coming from the origami-like cascades by the wall. And if you’re feeling hungry, order a bowl from Uma Uma Ramen upstairs.

Lepark

Founded by Mike and Grace Soldner in 2012, this bar recently got a makeover when the hotel that houses it, The Club, changed ownership. Down a narrow, non-descript set of stairs off the lobby, this low-ceilinged bar is all about whiskies from $20 (B500) a dram, rum from $18 (B455) a shot, and cocktails from $20 (B500). Come and chill to the jazz music on Wednesdays and Thursday at 9 and 9:30pm respectively. B/F The Club, 28 Ann Siang Rd. theclub.com.sg

Bitters and Love

Hidden among a row of shophouses, with an entrance behind Shoebox Canteen, this place sports a marble-topped bar and cocktails based on flavor profiles: fruity, sour, sweet or bitter from $1723 (B430-B582). Spoil yourself with the Rangers Valley 300-day grain-fed Wagyu beef cubes at $22 (B557). 118 Telok Ayer St. www.bittersandlove.com

Gibson

At this new cocktail and raw seafood bar, the entrance involves a low-lit walk down a snaking, dingy corridor and a short flight of stairs, and the decor looks like an upscale speakeasy, with marble top tables, a geometric stained glass bar facade and retro-chic glassware. The 60-cocktail menu is divided into Finding Comfort (easy classics), Forging Friendship (complex flavor combos) and Sharing Happiness (stuff to drink abundantly all night) and Reserve (made with top-shelf stuff). The house cocktail, The Gibson at $24 (B600), is a smooth mix of Hendrick’s, Monkey 47 and Dolin vermouth. 2, 20 Bukit Pasoh Rd. www.gibsonbar.sg

The Great Escape

On your next Singapore trip, catch a movie at hip art-house cinema The Projector (www.fb.com/theprojectorsg). Afterward, head toward the bathroom, take the side door, cut across the parking lot and walk until you see the glowing warm lights and the pleasant murmurs of chillness. Comprising the space of about 12 parking spaces is The Great Escape. On occasion, there’s food like fried chicken and craft beers ranging from $13-19 (B329-B481).

B28

Located on the rooftop carpark of the cool People’s Park Complex (there’s this one set of staircases near the UOB ATMs, and a couple set of stairs up to the roof) which has seen pop-ups by the Edible Gardens folks, this fusion Asian tapas bar, beer garden, arts space and music venue is basically the epitome of cool. It’s got bites like salted egg yolk soft shell crab sliders, salads with gula melaka and fried potato skins, as well as beers like Tin Rebel Full Nelson and Westmalle Dubbel. Plus, the space is the home of the “getai” series of local live music showcases. 6/F People’s Park Complex, 1 Park Rd. www.fb.com/leparksg

Operation Dagger

Lepark

Unlike other speakeasies in town, Oxwell and Co.’s hush-hush basement cocktail bar is serious about its secrecy. Their website is decidedly minimalist, and their Facebook page has no pictures or updates. All the more reason to feel extra cool when you’re down at the bare-walled, concrete-floored space, knocking back kooky cocktails from their omakase flight. Don’t miss the Egg, made with salted egg, vanilla and caramel. 7 Ann Siang Hill. www.operationdagger.com

The Secret Mermaid

You’ll have to be observant to head to this bar as only a non-descript, industrial sliding door and a little signage greets you at the front. It’s a little squeeze on the inside, with one main bar counter (for a large group of six to eight). This bar serves classic cocktails like the Spiced Blueberry Mojito at $20 (B500), Salted Caramel Old Fashioned at $20 (B500). Bites include and devilled eggs with wasabi topped with nori strips at $9 (B228).

Walk up the stairs of the second floor at 73 Amoy Street in Chinatown and chill for some ‘20s jazz music. The bartenders Jez and Joyce will make some bespoke drinks (stiff but harmonious, often with a cocktail geek’s touch, from $22 (B557) in town without any fanfare. 2/F 73A Amoy St. www.spiffydapper.com

PATTAYA

The New Horizon Veranda Resort Pattaya Hotel (www.verandaresortandspa.com) is a chic new resort right on Na Jomthien Beach to the south of Pattaya. Designed by Office of Bangkok Architects and T.R.O.P., the 145 rooms stick to a modern, bright-blue theme, ranging from the ocean-front 40-sq-meter room with a sea-view bathtub, to the 136-sq-meter villa with two bedrooms and a swimming pool terrace with sun lounges. The free-form swimming pool with its geometric sun loungers is a pretty picture too. There are two dining areas: The Deck and I Sea Sky, the latter of which boasts a rooftop with sunken tables from which to catch the sunset. They’re currently offering 15-percent discounts on rooms, which start at B3,823 per night, or B6,797 for a two-night stay, in a king room or B12,901 per night in a family suite.

UDON THANI

Isaan Tea

We’ve been hearing great things about Udon Thani’s coffee scene, and now the Northeastern city has welcomed its own minimal-style teahouse. Leisure (092280-0772, www.fb.com/llleisure) is run by Sitanan Chattrachirarat, an architect who turned her back on Bangkok to follow her love of tea and dessert. The tea is sourced from Europe, Taiwan, Japan and China, with highlights including Dongfang Meiren (aka Oriental Beauty), a famous highly xidized tea from Taiwan, and Gyokuro, one of the most expensive green teas from Japan. The tea-pairing desserts include matcha panna cotta and brioche toast gluay khai (lady finger banana) and taeng Thai (musk melon). It will soon serve its own house-blended tea: leaves come from a plantation in Nakhon Phanom mixed with local herbs such as pak wan (sweet leaves of the star gooseberry tree) and Isaan mint.

TATTOO

Classic Ink Street artists and tattoo shops are like soulmates. Now, Bangkok’s Luke Satoru, a founding part of the Bukruk street art festival, has teamed up with Black Pig Tattoo BKK to offer a range of designs that blend with Black Pig’s bold and classic style. Guests seeking other styles are also welcome to drop by to discuss what they want. Satoru is the latest in a line of guest tattooist’s at the studio including the recent visit of Markus Winther who specializes in the American traditional styles. 672/65 Charoenkrung Soi 28, 080595-2999. www.fb.com/blackpigtattoobkk

MOTORS

Ristretto Ride We’re starting to miss the good old days when European motorcycles all cost over B900,000. At least it was easy to say no. Now, as if the 803cc Ducati Scrambler wasn’t tempting enough at a mere B374,900, they’ve just released its 399cc twin at B282,000. Apart from halving the engine (and the power), it’s pretty much the same bike, including the standard ABS breaks. Is 41 horsepower too little? If it’s your first bike, and you plan on living long enough to get a second one, we say it’s just about right. FASHION

Rough and Racy The coming of March means Spring/ Summer collections are ready to be revealed. Aside from the huge obsession with bohemian-inspired women’s looks (See Avenue Fashion, page 13), the closet of Gothic Thai designer Anchavika follows a military theme with a romantic twist. The collection takes inspiration from America’s first female soldiers, with designer Anchalee Vikasidnakhakul basing her clothes around military greens and khakis with a mix of camouflage prints mixed with red roses and red velvet texture. We like the casual glam looks, as in the a green jacket mixed with torn metallic copper pants, or the camouflage layered maxi skirt matched with military green sleeveless shirt for an evening party. SALON

Dare to be Tanned Is Bangkok’s whitening dictate starting to wear off? The city’s first tanning salon, BKK Sun, offers sun-deprived city dwellers that instant surfer glow, whether from sun beds or spray-on booths imported from the US. You have three options here: the laydown Ovation 3400 sunbed, the stand-up Sundazzler booth for more consistent results (B299-799), and sunless spray tanning (B1,500-2,500) for a look that will last only 5-7 days. Skin testing is required before using the machine to determine the recommended duration of use (average 4-6 minutes, maximum 10 minutes), and it takes up to 3-4 times to see outstanding results. You should take at least two days off between sessions. The salon also has a line of skincare products including Australian Gold and Liquid Assets lotion (B700-3500) with more on the way. 2/9 Sukhumvit Soi 34, 02-003-3333. Right by your side Superstar actor, film producer, businessman and all-round nice guy Ananda Everingham explains why the Huawei Mate 8 is a social luminary’s best friend. The man whose face has graced a thousand billboards and ensured sell-out screenings for some of Thailand’s biggest ever movies, Ananda Everingham, recently switched to the Mate 8 while shooting a remake of a Korean romantic comedy TV series called Princess Hours. He’s been using Huawei’s sleek new beacon of power, clever design and spangly gold-ness for a couple of weeks now—half in Bangkok at his production agency, and half at his Chiang Mai family home, where he also now runs the rustic-cool Hotel Yayee boutique hotel—and reckons it’s about as good as phones get for guys who spend as much time on the road as he does. “When I’m traveling is the best opportunity I have to get to grips with new technology,” he explains. “I’ve had the time to get used to Mate 8 and the Huawei operating system, especially on long trips. The overall impression is fast, flexible power. It’s a great tool, for travel, for work and for multitasking.” The North is Ananda’s natural stomping ground, and provides him with a space to escape the pressures that come from Bangkok’s film industry. “Chiang Mai’s become a bit of a hub for me,” he says. “I work there on projects for my production company and travel directly to Vietnam and KL for directorial meetings. My travel upcountry has given me more time to enjoy the phone in the ways Huawei intended.”

ADVERTORIAL

Why’s that? “I’m not a slave to technology, but I spend a lot of time with the phone screen and laptop screen; a lot of film and TV scripts, a lot of emails to respond to. Anything that makes my tasks easier is something I appreciate, as time is always limited for anything that involves TV production. And this thing has a processor called Kirin 950 which is why this thing is so fast.” Kirin 950 is the name of a chipset, the heart of this slick beast. Combined with a gorgeous six-inch screen and a kick-ass camera with full HD recording, Mate 8 is both a business platform and a pro creative tool, offering inspired ways to capture stuff when out and about. Its battery also provides a mammoth 17 hours’ worth of HD video playback, so forget about toting around an annoying power bar. If you want a taste of what the camera’s capable of, check out Ananda’s flawlessly cool Instagram (@anandeveringham), where perfectly framed snaps of the socialite lifestyle sit side by side with cool scenes of upcountry exploits. “I love photography so Instagram is a big part of my life; more so than Facebook. I focus on the things that make me happy. For people who are expressive and enjoy the freedom to try new technologies, I can honestly say this is the new benchmark, the new smartphone gold standard. You don’t need to be a tech-head to benefit from it; its performance is there for everyone to enjoy, especially the camera.”

That camera is a 16-megapixel whopper boasting a proper Sony F2.0 lens, slow-motion capture, image stabilization and low-light shooting. The results speak for themselves, but thanks to the Android platform, creatives like Mr Everingham can also get a little help from savvy app developers. “The top-end of the smartphone market is populated by brand-chasers. I love Android because it attracts flexible developers, and it doesn’t tie users to a particular ecosystem. This is really important for shooting video—for set design inspiration, for location scouting, prepping a light design in pre-production. It’s all available on Mate 8, like a pre-visualization tool; a creative palette to save time on the actual production that follows. That feeling of not being locked down makes the latest gen of Android feel very open, and on this phone it runs like an utter dream. All you notice is the power, and the snappiness of how it responds.”

All this sounds strange coming from a guy whose life sometimes seems like the perfect embodiment of slow living. “I’m not a techie, and was actually a fairly late adopter to the whole smartphone addiction thing. But I’m becoming more tech-savvy as I get older because my time is more valuable, and so the way I use it becomes more efficient. That simply gives me more free time to enjoy doing the things I want.” And that, for now, is running one of the sexiest little hotels in Chiang Mai— an affordable slice of point-perfect local design in the trendy Nimman area. “Having the hotel is fun, and I enjoy the design and management aspects of it,” he explains. “It’s something I always wanted to do, and gives me another reason to be upcountry. The weather’s amazing right now so it’s a good time to enjoy outdoor sports; my family; my home.”

Killer Looks Just feel that gorgeous metallic unibody design with chamfered edges and a luxurious sandblasted finish. It all makes for an incredibly slim phone with 7.9mm edges despite the high-capacity battery and bleeding-edge camera. Now you just need to decide if you want it in Champagne Gold, Moonlight Silver, Space Gray or Mocha Brown. All Screen The unique 2.5D Diamong Cut Glass screen takes up 85% of the phone’s surface, making the Mate 8 Huawei’s most compact phone ever. And with a 6-inch diagonal, the high resolution (1080 x 1920 pixels) adds up to a superlative 368 points per inch density. On and On The Mate 8’s 4000mAh battery can play high-definition video for 17 hours straight, and navigate the web for 20. That means heavy users will get two days OF use, while regular users could go three days without a charge. Shoot to Thrill Like what you see? The Mate 8 features Sony’s latest 16 MP IMX298 sensor. With a wide f/2.0 aperture, a large 1/2.8-inch sensor and optical stabiliZation, results are consistently beyond expectations, even in low-light conditions. Take the Fast Track The Mate 8’s new Kirin 950 chipset makes it the first smartphone to feature TSMC’s 16 nm FinFET Plus chip technology. The octa-core processor consists of four A72 2.3 GHz cores and four A53 1.8 GHz cores, making it 30 percent faster than its predecessor. At YouR Fingertips Tap into your phone with the completely redesigned fingerprint sensor or switch to split-screen mode with a quick swipe of your knuckle. Always Connected With support for more frequency bands than any other dual-SIM phone, the Mate 8 is the perfect travel companion for those who expect lightning fast connectivity wherever they go.

Go Greek Run by Greek owners, and helmed by a Greek chef, Avra promises the authentic Mediterranean flavors Bangkok has been waiting for. From its Santorini-evoking blue-and-white color scheme, it’s not hard to guess this is the place for some dips and pita bread. Chef Konstantinos Sarrimavrogenis, from the port city of Thessaloniki, goes beyond Greek salad (B220) with crispy fried appetizers like tigani feta (feta cheese wrapped in crispy rolls, served with honey, sesame and orange, B235) and dolmadakia (grape leaves stuffed with rice and herbs, B225). The pita bread (B50) is some of the softest in town, and comes with delicious best friends tzatziki (yogurt dip), melitzanosalata (eggplant dip), fava (split peas dip) and taramas (cod roe dip), at B135-195 each. Mains span moussaka (layered minced beef with eggplant, potato and zucchini, B390), xtapodi me fava (grilled octopus and caramelized onion on yellow split pea spread, B395) and gyros kotopoulo (grilled chicken kebab with onion and tomato, B290). There are also desserts like sokolatopita (chocolate cake smothered in chocolate cream, B150) and drinks like Greek-style coffee (B70) and traditional aperitif ouzo (B180). Tall Tales

Meant to evoke a vintage train cabin, not only is Track 17 easy on the eyes, the drinks are the real deal too. Familiar face Ronnaporn “Neung” Kanivichaporn (2014 Thailand World Class Bartender and co-founder and mixologist at Roof Hideaway) mans the bar where he serves a list of drinks that’s heavy on forgotten classics. If you’re a fan of Negronis, try Rosita, which replaces gin with tequila and also features homemade sweet vermouth, Italian dry vermouth, Campari and a dash of Angostura bitters (B330). Another must-try is 20th Century (gin, carpano bianco vermouth, creme de cacao and lemon juice, B330), named in honor of the celebrated 20th Century Limited train that ran between New York and Chicago from 1902 until 1967. 2/F, The Commons, 355 Thonglor Soi 17, 02-101-4525

Led by chef Sasitorn Charoensuk (previously of Let Them Eat Cake), the kitchen rolls out dishes like egg skillet (duck eggs with chorizo, salami, mushrooms and cherry tomato, B185) and waffle with grilled bacon and eggs (B125) as well as healthier choices like granola chia yogurt (B160). The cafe actually acts as Tenyuu Grand’s dessert kitchen, whipping up most treats in-house including ice cream (B85/scoop), which can be served with pancake souffle (B240), and shaved mineral-water kakigori (B240), which comes with a delicious chestnut cream. 66 Sathorn Soi 6, 02-632-2559

Thonglor’s new dessert cafe doubles as a bar at night. Specializing in ice-cream-based desserts, Mocking Tales rolls out a long list of funky-looking treats, inspired by fairy tales and classic fiction. Try the Lord of the Rings-inspired Inferno Mountain (B380) which comprises three scoops of ice cream topped with brownies and rice krispies inside a chocolate upside-down cone, topped with raspberry sauce and flamed with orange liqueur. We also like the fashionably presented baked apple served with apple sorbet, homemade caramel and crumble, dubbed Poisoned Apple (B260). Signature cocktails are no less fancy. Junker and Bar’s owner-bartender Passapong “Bard” Phetpradit helped create gin-based drinks. Coffee starts at B95. G/F, Maze Thonglor, Sukhumvit Soi 55, 083-386-6992. BTS Thong Lo

blends BAR

Down the Rabbit Hole Visiting Thonglor’s new speakeasy cocktail lounge. By Vasachol Quadri

The buzz: Thonglor welcomes a new speakeasy, Rabbit Hole, which lurks behind a wooden door between soi 5 and 7. There’s no proper sign out front so look out for the space between Ainu Japanese bar and Ramen Ajisai. The decor: Step inside this three-story shop-house and you’ll find a charming, dimly-lit, narrow bar with a huge rose gold booze rack behind a marble bar. With its plentiful bar seating, the first floor has all the atmosphere of a serious drinking establishment, while upstairs sees more quiet corners for group gatherings—and an extra bar, so you won’t be kept waiting too long. The slowly-changing lighting adds to the intimate mood. The drinks: Two veteran bartenders from Diageo World Class stage—Suwincha “Chacha” Singsuwan and Naphat “Yod” Natcha-

chon—man the space, cranking out classic drinks with technical twists and infusions. There’s plenty of variation on the spirit shelves, with a good number of Scotch, American and Japanese whiskeys available by the glass or bottle. Don’t miss their White Truffle Martini (B450), which they make using a process called “fat washing.” White truffle oil-infused Tanqueray Gin is chilled to -18 degress then served straight into a martini glass washed with dry vermouth. The oil is skimmed from the top before the drink is garnished with an olive. For something refreshing, go for the Mad Hatter (B350), a gin-based long drink that mixes together passion fruit, smoked tea, lime juice, syrup and a dash of absinthe, topped with soda and torch-dried orange for a smoky aftertaste. Queen of Heat (B350) reminds us of the classic White Lady cocktail: vodka, lotus syrup, lime juice and egg

white garnished with lotus petal. Another spirit-forward drink that’s really crisp and smooth is Spade Gardener (B350), which uses apricot-infused rum with plum bitters and lime juice, served with a Chinese plum. They don’t serve any food, so be prepared before coming for a drink.

What are spirit-forward cocktails?

The music: Groovy house music with live DJs on Fri-Sat spinning sets that are a little more upbeat. The crowd: Thonglor’s pretty faces, but also don’t be surprised if you meet a lot of bar owners and veteran mixologists. Why you should care: Aside from the impressive decor, Chacha and Yod know how to make the most of the wall-to-wall booze, serving some seriously good cocktails. 125 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (between Thonglor Soi 5 and 7), 081-822-3392. BTS Thong Lo

While most of Bangkok likes its drinks sweet and fruity, served in long glasses with crushed ice, there’s also been a growing demand for drinks based heavily on alcohol. The spirit-forward category refers to drinks mixed with spirits, liqueurs, bitters, vermouth and port wine—so no more calling martinis too strong!

Five spirit-forward drinks to try in Bangkok right now

QUINTUS AT VOGUE LOUNGE (B340) Japanese mixologist Hideyuki Saito’s new creation for the Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition takes inspiration from the five characteristics of punch (Quintus means five), mixing white rum with dry fino sherry, La Quintinye vermouth and Benedictine D.O.M, served with a zesty pickled onion. Sweet with a spicy kick. 6/F, Mahanakhon Cube, Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Rd., 02-001-0697. BTS Chong Nonsi

ADAPTED SAZERAC AT IL FUMO (B420) The team from Vesper’s new bar is all about classic cocktails, mainly forgotten ones, which has resulted in a wide choice in the spirit-forward category. We do like their adaptations of long-loved treasures, too. Here, bartender Pailin Sajjanit makes a classic rye whiskey Sazerac but adds Mahiki coconut liqueur for a milder mouthfeel before topping it off with Peychaud’s bitters and absinthe. The result is both rough and smooth. 1098/2 Rama 4 Rd., 02-286-8833. MRT Khlong Toey

MONSIEUR BOM AT CHICON (B340) The separate bar on the third floor of Le Cafe Des Stagiaires focuses on crafty cocktails courtesy of a bartender from the energetic Vice Versa team (Nopadon “Bom“ Thansongla). The whiskey-based signature Monsieur Bom features vermouth and port wine bitters with torched cinnamon, anise, clove and orange peel on the side. 2/F, Le Cafe des Stagiaires, 142/21 Sathorn Soi 12, 062-445-0445.

D-DAY AT BRICKS AND BONES (B285)

COSA NOSTRA AT RABBIT HOLE (B420)

This far-off America-themed bar is Bangkok’s first bourbon specialist. And by that, we mean signature cocktails which, though all based around bourbon, have a wide enough range to serve all tastes. If you’re a spirit-forward fan, try the D-Day, which packs a punch thanks to the mix of bourbon with Irish whiskey, La Quintinye red vermouth, Amaro, Aperol and honey served in a flask.

It’ll take more than a single night to try all the signature cocktails at Rabbit Hole (see above). One of the must-drink, booze-driven creations is the Cosa Nostra. The simple and tasty drink features nothing more than a Cognac-infused cherry shaken in Amaretto in a cigar-smoked shaker, served in a rocks glass with ice ball. Sweet and smoky.

Pork tongue stew

In operation for more than 80 years, this three-unit shop-house right across from Nang Loeng market still draws in considerable foot traffic. The duck is the highlight here, be it the tender roasted version or the deeply-flavored braised duck soup (B20). Also don’t miss the pork belly as it comes lean and crispy with satisfying grilled notes. B35-50 for rice topped with roast meat. 355-359 Nakorn Sawan Rd., 02-281-1283. Open daily 9am-1pm

Tucked down a small alley, this stall has been serving its delicious kae noodles (B45) for over 60 years. The highlight has to be the seven varieties of look chin (pork, fish, shrimp and tofu balls and dumplings), made daily in-house.

Currently run by its third generation, this braised beef noodle shop is almost impossible to get a seat at during lunch hours. Accompanying the five-hour braised beef is a savory broth that’s packed with aroma. Order a side of rice (B6) to your braised beef soup (B60) and soak up those flavors.

With their thick top layer of coconut milk on soft rice batter, the tiny traditional ceramic bowls of kanom tuay (B25/8 pieces) really stand out here. Freshly steaming her treats during selling hours, the third-gen owner doesn’t meddle with the classic recipe.

OPEN DOOR

Pirate Chambre A "local trattoria" that does Thai/Isaan bites by day and Western classics by night. The buzz: Na-chanok Ratanadaros, the man behind hiso club Fallabella and Chingcha Chalee restaurant, takes a slightly more complicated route with this hidden restaurant that has different personalities during the day and at night. The focus at Pirate Chambre is on bold Thai and Isaan tastes from 11am-3pm and Western fare and cocktails from 5pm onwards. The decor: It's an exhaustive collection of all the European bistro trends of late: wood-panelled bar with brass railing, steelframed beveled glass, marquee lightbulb letters signage, checkered floor, bare brick walls with decrepit rendering—you name it, they got it. In the back, a few pirate touches—tassel velvet curtains, tufted throne and crystal chandelier—got thrown in.

22

The food and drinks: After opening restaurants and traveling the world, Na-chanok calls this the storage space for his various “treasures”—the result is a menu that is all over the place. The lunch menu includes Thai favorites like tod mun (spicy fish cake, B180), somtam taad (somtam platter with side accompaniments, B320), “Khao Pad Nai Ying” river prawn fried rice (B320) and grilled chicken (B250 for half bird), as well as easy rice dishes like grilled pork or beef krapao (B180) to accommodate the office crowds. Dinner heads into international waters with Le Banyan pressed duck (B3,200 for two people), which uses the Rouen-style recipe of the now-defunct Sukhumvit restaurant of the same name. Also expect steak (starting at B300 for a 100g Aussie beef's New York cut), braised lamb shank (B480) served

with mantou, lamb stroganoff and gorgonzola pie (B300) and a variety of pasta (B280-320). Na-chanok is also ambitious when it comes to cocktails, with themed creations like Black Pearl (vodka, Cointreau, lime juice, egg white, elderflower-pear haule syrup and angostura bitters, B320) and Princess P (vodka, butterfly pea-infused syrup, lime juice, vanilla liqueur, kaffir lime leaf, egg white and jasmine perfume, B390). Why you should care: This is no Ashley Sutton decor, but if you're into themed venues, the amusement park undertones just may tickle your fancy. This is one sleek Japanese restaurant: not super high-end, but carefully designed (an elegant blend of blonde wood with patterned fabrics) and with regional touches to its menu. It’s just enough to make Yoka Yoka stand out amid Bangkok’s very crowded Japanese dining scene. Japanese expats have taken notice, and make up more than half the clientele— always a good sign. The menu is very wide reaching, so that Yoka Yoka’s supposed focus on Hakata cuisine (Fukuoka’s oldest ward) is somewhat lost among a lengthy parade of all the usual suspects, from sushi and tempura to salads and steak. If you do want to stick to Fukuoka classics, make sure to order some spicy, salted cod roe (mentaiko, B280)—the stuff here is definitely a notch above some of the ones we’ve had in dingier izakaya. American-style, dirty-hands seafood has been trending over the last 12 months. Before arriving in Bangkok, Shrimp Lover opened three branches in Los Angeles where it’s made a name for full-flavored Cajun seafood boils along with some Thai dishes. Here in their fisherman villagethemed mall opening, they have actually cut many of the Thai offerings, but you can still find single dishes like pad Thai (B150) and khao pad goong (shrimp fried rice, B150). These are probably the weakest part of the menu: the former soggy, the latter simply flavorless. The highlight really is the imported seafood, whether it’s Maine lobster, Dungeness crab or New Zealand

also seems to like its food hearty. Tuck in with the Hakata tonkotsu ramen (B180), which sees slices of pork in a rich, fatty broth, or bring your pals to share the real signature dish, a Hakata hotpot, which comes either with chicken (Hakata mitzutaki, B380/750) or wagyu beef offal (Hakata wagyu motsu nabe, B420/800). Execution is excellent across the board. Another Hakata classic, the pork trotters with zingy yuzu relish have perfectly crispy skin and moist, tender meat. The sashimi is fresh and elegantly plated—we tried some beautiful hamachi on our last visit (B500). And the salads pack plenty of crunchy veggies, such as in the towering Nagasaki salad (B280). Our biggest letdown comes courtesy of the dedicated black pork menu: a “buta fillet ippon age,” which was dry and flavorless despite heaps of ponzu jelly and sliced onions (B360). Order enough and little extras will come out from behind the bar, while servers strike the right balance between diligent and unobtrusive. In line with the place’s modern vibe, the drinks list reaches beyond sochu and sake, with a global selection of wines that allows you to pair an Alsatian pinot gris (Trimbach Reserve 2005, B2,500) with your fatty tuna. The second-floor sake bar does cocktails and other spirits, and also offers private rooms, while the third floor is yet another concept, The Circle, with live bands every Thursday from 9pm-12am.

greenshell mussel (all at “market” prices), which come boiled up and spread on paper mats. There are five types of sauce to choose from: Louisiana, lemon pepper, Indian, Thai seafood (of course) and medley. The finger-lickin’ B399 combo, which includes shrimp, octopus and mussels, represents good value for money, while the Louisiana Cajun sauce is spicy but well-rounded so as not to take away from the freshness of the produce. But we weren’t quite prepared for the baby octopus (B199) in medley sauce—which is even more pungent, even more intense. It’s also delicious. But you’ll need some rice to handle the heat. On that topic, we love the flavor of the Cajun fried rice’s (B150), but we’re not so sold on the overcooked shrimps. Oddly, we’re also not greatly impressed by the fried appetizers like the West Coast wings (B120) and Cajun fries (B85). Both lack the spicy kick we hoped for, and on our last visit came served almost at room temperature. The crisp calamari (B140) fares somewhat better, helped by a decent-tasting mayonnaise. When visiting Shrimp Lover, we’d steer clear of the Thai and deep-fried offerings and head straight for the main attraction— the seafood boils, which are honest, messy fun and pretty tasty too.

SPOTLIGHT

Niam Nawornkanong, artist My favorite Thai Artist is… Khun Fah Poonwornluck. Many people may know him as a poet and writer, but I also love his conceptual artworks. His way of thinking is very unique, with something that is complex and deep as well as very simple. His works always lead me to new ways of thinking. My favorite art gallery in Bangkok is…. Chamchuri Art Gallery. It is a non-profit institution that always invites new faces and non-professionals to showcase their work, and doesn’t ask for a lot of money in return. It’s a great place to start out.

One thing I love about the Thai art scene is… it’s still relatively easy to find your footing because the art community here is quite small—if you studied art at university then it’s even easier to get to know people in the industry. One thing I don’t like about the Thai art scene is… art competitions. No matter how many I see, they all have the same standards and reward the same style of work. They hardly ever reward any originality. In the future, I want to see Thai artists… interact with artists of wider, alternative mediums. It will widen our perspectives, because sometimes sticking with the same group of artists you know can be like a fish swimming circles around the same pond.

Niam Mawornkanong’s latest exhibition, “Maew Huai,” is a series of highly detailed, life-like portraits of cats. It is on show at Subhashok The Arts Centre (160/3 Sukhumvit Soi 39) from Feb 27 to Mar 27.
