Daniel Thaiger’s burgers are a tough act to top. If you thought Craft and Daniel Thaiger had a good thing going, think again. Not content with having the city’s most popular burger truck parked next door, where its legion of fans had no choice but to drink the pricey beers on offer, Craft thought it was wise to introduce its own burger— without consulting Daniel Thaiger. Cue the truck’s prompt exit—see the new spot, page 13.

Bangkok’s coolest new stores are on Lad Phrao. Method to my My Madness is a warren of ‘70s floral dresses and deadstock denim where you can also grab a beer and a burger. Meanwhile over on Soi 71 someone’s opened a twostory frozen yogurt shop that also sells the kind of fashion not normally found outside of Emquartier. For more new places blurring the line between cafe, boutique and bar, see page 12. We can think twice before buying leather. A shopping mall brimming with vendors selling leather handbags last week opened its doors to a campaign warning shoppers not to buy leather handbags. Thanks to Ogilvy & Mather Thailand’s latest campaign for animal rights organization Peta Thailand, shoppers at The Leather Work pop-up at CentralWorld got a rude surprise when they opened bags to be confronted with the faux blood and guts of animals. Judge the reactions for yourself at goo.gl/xs2Ek3. Fred Meyer (Issaya, Namsaah, Kombawa, Pizza Massilia) is opening a pad Thai shop. Tucked away in the historic streets behind Shangri-La, two shop-houses have been taken over by the prolific restaurateur (see page 19). He plans to serve up every tourist’s favorite in a handful of variations (prawns, crab, chicken). He also promises it will be good enough for us locals to love. Stay tuned.

upfront HOT OR NOT

Hot: Watermelons

Not: Sausages

Bangkok’s food NGOs have been going testing mad. The Foundation for Consumers put 15 of our favorite sausage brands under the microscope and discovered we should only be eating one of them. Meanwhile, the Thai-Pesticide Alert Network (Thai-Pan) got in touch with some boffs in the UK, sent them 138 samples of fruit and veg and discovered less than half were safe to eat— including the stuff our food certifiers say is organic. Good news if you like watermelons though, which came out 100-percent squeaky clean.

INTERVIEW

Hot: Hua Hin

Not: Phuket

For some crazy reason, the people of Phuket think a museum dedicated to preserving their Peranakan culture doesn’t need a piece of Bangkok street art on its side. Fuming with rage, the president of the Old Phuket Town Community told the Bangkok Post: “We all genuinely think [the Phuket street art] project can boost our economy… But this particular piece of Alex Face is on the wrong building.” What a dinosaur! We reckon Alex should take his tins of paint to Hua Hin instead, where the more cultured locals are busy turning their town into Thonglor (see page 14).

Hot: Diageo Finalists

Not: Iron Chefs

Remember when some dude who once appeared on Iron Chef headed every new restaurant in Bangkok? That little wave seems to be all but gone, but rest assured our new bars are still relying on the talents of Diageo World Class finalists. Bunker (page 16), Backstage and Track 17 all boast DWC cred, while the list of old places claiming their very own Diageo Finalist bartender would need its own story.

Hot: Beef ribs

What drove you to write a book about marijuana’s medicinal benefits? My younger brother had cancer. I tried many ways to find a cure for him, and spent years studying research from other countries that clearly shows that marijuana can cure cancer. I have a strong desire to tell Thais to stop viewing it only as a narcotic. Marijuana can save lives. It’s an alternative medicine. What do you say to people who are sceptical of alternative medicines? There are many cancer doctors who turn to alternative medicines when they grow old. After 30-40 years’ work, they know that no matter how hard they try to cure a patient with conventional medicine, the patient will still die. Medical research has proved many times that weed works, but it has taken a decade for that research to make it into textbooks. Japan filed patents to make marijuana a medicine in 2013 and mitragynine [kratom, a plant

with potential medicinal effects in 2014. The UK has filed similar patents for marijuana as well. How likely is it that Thailand will follow their example? Though Thailand has actually drafted a new medicine act that paves the way for medical marijuana, the content inside is not strong. It says in article 76 that patients can only use formulary cannabis, instead of saying we can use herbal cannabis. This is important. Many countries use the wording herbal cannabis because it allows people to produce it themselves. Instead, the Thai system will force people to pay money for expensive medicine that does not exist yet. No other country in the world has made this silly move. How long will we have to pay for this stupid cost? Thailand already loses too much of its human resources to cancer at great expense thanks to conventional medicine.

So what is our best option here? We should legalize marijuana and allow people to grow it themselves for medicinal purposes, as well as sell it to make medicine. Normal marijuana already sells at B50,000 per kilogram and the price will go up about 3-4 times if it’s used for medicine. It’s truly the gold you can grow in your backyard! We have been brainwashed for 40 years into thinking it’s a narcotic when in fact it’s not. It’s even used to treat drug addicts. I recently realized that there are groups currently using cannabis for their cancer only they can’t reveal themselves because it’s illegal! Are you concerned legalizing marijuana will have any negative social impact? I think people are smart enough to use it correctly. We can create rules to protect its usage but we need to cure people who are dying first. Interview by Monruedee Jansuttipan

Not: Tomahawks

They appear at new restaurants three times this issue: smothered in green mole sauce at Mexicano (see page 13), given half a day in the oven at Meat & Bones (see page 14), and falling from the bone in perfect inch-thick slices at Bunker (see page 16). All taste amazing, but we really hope they don’t push sharing tomahawks off the menu.

Dermatologist Dr. Somyot Kittimunkong, 51, made headlines recently when he released his new book, Marijuana is Medicine That Cures Cancer, in which he advocates the use of marijuana to aid patients suffering from cancer—the no. 1 killer in Thailand for 13 consecutive years. Here, he chats to BK about the possibility of legalizing marijuana in Thailand for medicinal use.

Hua Hin shakes off its sleepy seaside image with bold new developments and dramatic hotel revamps. By Monruedee Jansuttipan

HOTELS So Sofitel Hua Hin

Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa

Accor group’s stark, modernist Hotel de la Paix Hua Hin, designed by celebrity architect Duangrit Bunnag, has been revamped and rebranded as SO Sofitel Hua Hin. Animal sculptures and art pieces now add a playful touch to the original lines created by Duangrit, as do the faux-driftwood four-poster beds in the SO Nature room category and the colorful paintings in the SO Arty rooms. There are three new F&B venues, too: White Oven, a restaurant serving Thai and international dishes; Hi-SO, a rooftop bar boasting panoramic views of Hua Hin’s coastline; and Beach Society, a beach club that will host monthly parties. 115 Moo 7, Bang Kao, 032-709-555. goo.gl/ tSWvW5

Hin's long history. If you’re looking for romance, the huge lagoon-shaped swimming pool even features an adults-only zone. Apart from the fresh-baked pastries at Siam Bakery, there are two main restaurants: Amber Kitchen, an allday dining eatery serving Thai and international classics; and Big Fish, a beachside seafood and charcoal grill next to the Pool Bar. 107/1 Phetkasem Rd., 032-904-666. goo. gl/9Mtkx6.

The Regent Cha-am Beach Resort This 30-year-old resort has also gone through a major, B100-million revamp. The old deluxe rooms have been spruced up with a colorful new look, while fresh landscaping has brought added style to the beachfront pool and Sky Terrace, a new beachfront alfresco function space for parties. The vast empty space that surrounded the hotel has also been put to good use as the new Regent Bike Park mountain bike trail (see page 8). Bike rental is B100 per day with a helmet. 849/21 Petchkasem Road, 032-451-240-9. regent-chaam.com

COMMUNITY MALLS Seenspace The beachfront Seenspace Hua Hin mall was designed by Akaradej Pantisoontorn, the developer-slash-architect behind Thonglor's perpetually popular Seenspace. Spread over 7,200 sq meters, the modern design sees rectangular bare cement blocks topped with grass walkways and a criss-crossed rooftop. The mall promises the likes of Greyhound Original, plus Seek35 and Seek Happening. Lalalove London and Sretsis will join soon, too. Dining includes familiar Bangkok names like HOBS and White Shuffle, along with the likes of FIN seafood bar, Space Oddity and Cold Brew Bar. Architect Duangrit Bunnag will eventually join with his Nomad Bar by The Never Ending Summer, to be followed by his new hotel, Hotel Bocage, a six-room-only property set to open this September. NEW CLUB Mahasamutr Country Club Hyped as the most ambitious and luxurious project Hua Hin has ever seen, this 130-rai country club from Pace Development came at a cost of B7 billion and features Asia’s largest man-made private lagoon, surrounded by a beach and high-end villas. These start at B50-million a piece, but you can also buy lifetime membership to the club starting from B500,000 per individual (on top of a yearly fee of B24,000) or B1.5 million for corporate membership. The lagoon is so big you can even windsurf on it, or take out kayaks and paddle boards as well as learn to scuba dive. The club also comprises a sports complex with facilities for badminton, basketball, volleyball, tennis and an Olympic-sized 50-meter swimming pool. Thé Tea House

This minimal, tiny restaurant is the brainchild of designer couple Kornsorn Prakobkhong and Rossalin Sainimnual, who settled in Hua Hin more than a decade ago selling design products under the brand 100000d (san-d) at Cicada Market. Though they’ve brought their signature black-andwhite aesthetic to the space, the Thai food is mouth-wateringly traditional, such as khao khai khon tom yam goong (rice with omelet top with spicy prawn soup, B95), laab moo tod (deep-fried minced pork with herbs, B85) and grilled pork spicy salad. Do try the stunning signature drinks as well, like the mango shake served with a half mango, or the chao guay smoothie (herbal black jelly, B95)-referencing black jelly shake. Get your caffeine fix with the espresso doppio served in a moka pot, or the coffee-flower tea. Good news if you’re traveling with your pooch—the space is pet-friendly. Soi Hua Hin 101, Khao Tao, Phetkasem Rd., 032-908355, 085-503-333. www.100000d.com/1d+

The latest addition to the giant FN outlet mall contrasts its shiny modern shopping mall surroundings with grandiose decor. An antique Indian wooden arched facade frames the tea counter, on top of which resides a prowling ostrich skeleton, while over in another corner stands a suit of armor. The beautiful wallpaper features pictures of European and East Asian landscapes, representing the historical tea trail between the two continents. They only serve tea from Paris’s Mariage Freres, including the highlight Marco Polo, characterized by unique fragrances of Chinese and Tibetan flowers. A pot of tea is B190. To eat, order the pastries, made with French flour and butter, as well as the Red Rose finger cake (B140), whose strawberries also come from France.

White Home

The name tells you all you need to know about Supatra and Seksan Anuprai's cafe hidden deep in Hua Hin Soi 29. Filled with trees, ferns and other plants, the little oasis serves a compact list of dishes including Thai-style spaghetti like pla khem (salted fish), bacon and prik haeng (dried chili), and khee mao talay (spicy seafood with herbs). All cost at B150. The special of the day is determined by Hua Hin’s fresh seafood catch. To drink, there’s dark-roasted coffee, Italian sodas and local craft beer—stout, amber ale, pale ale and IPA—from Golden Coins Brewery, the same people who run Let the Boy Die beer bar in Bangkok. Note that service can be slow.

Located on a dead-end corner of Naeb Khehat Road, this twee little dessert cafe specializes in homemade treats. Prajuab Khirikhan-native Supakarn Olatasanakul cooks up dishes including the White Alaska cake (vanilla ice cream with meringue and raspberry sauce. B120), cookie and cream (B120) and, her signature, the Thai snack kanom piah ping sai pla (grilled Chinese pastry with fish stuffing, B35 per piece). There are also some savory dishes which she promises to be free from MSG and drawn from her mother’s recipes—who also helps with the cooking. Try the khao klook nam prik long rua song krueng (fried rice with shrimp paste served with vegetables, B95), stir-fried prawns with salt and chili with rice (B95) and minced pork omelet with salted seerfish and rice.

Remix Dessert Cafe

At this cafe, the focus is on cakes and toast as well as comfort dishes such as khao yam gai khai khon (fried chicken salad with omelet, B98) and eggy spaghetti carbonara (served with a torched egg on top, B129). The coffee comes from Chiang Mai beans as well as Zolito Italian brand. By the end of the month it will also serve brunch.

On the ground floor of the hotel of the same name, Remix Photo House is the creation of Anuchai Secharunputong, an award-winning photographer from the Cannes Lions advertising festival. Dark gray walls, giant industrial lamps and an antique wooden coffee counter set a vintage-meets-modern atmosphere in which to enjoy espresso, latte, mocha and frappe, or lemon and Thai tea. Both the sour-sweet yogurt cake and nutella cheesecake are delicious.

Neem Trees Thai Bistro

29/4 Naeb Kehat Rd, 081-921-6188. goo.gl/qzqwpN

This roadside bistro in Phetkasem has proven a popular spot during weekends. There are two zones: one serves Thai and international food such as khao pad gak moo platu (stir-fried rice with mackerel and pork crackling, B135) and Valencia orange salad (B220) and spaghetti with prawns with cream sauce and prawn roe (B285); the other acts as a cafe serving homemade cakes like carrot cake and coconut cake. It also opens for breakfast.

This little spot sits right on Cha-Am Beach and specializes in pizzas made using roti dough and topped with tomato, mozzarella, garlic, dried chili, onion and bacon. Velo Cafe Hua Hin

This cafe and restaurant focuses on international dishes served in a homey, European atmosphere. From smoked salmon salads to ribeye baguettes and spinach-and-brie crostini, the menu reads like a perfect collection of lunch staples. Make sure you also grab some of the awesome bread to dunk in their Hua Hin seafood chowder. They are also a serious breakfast player as they go beyond eggy dishes to serve vegetarian bites.

This three-year-old cafe moved to a new space last year on Naeb Khehat Road and began offering house-roasted beans. Highlights from the coffee menu include the affogato (vanilla ice cream topped with espresso, B95) and piccolo latte (B55), while non-coffee drinkers are catered to with Thai milk tea (B45/55) and caramel milk (B50/60). Desserts rotate daily. On our last visit they were serving a creamy strawberry trifle and crispy apple cake.

Big Fish

SEASIDE EATS Big Fish Hua Hin’s newest seaside restaurant sits in front of the revamped Hua Hin Marriott Resort and Spa. Chef Mario Hofmann focuses on charcoal grilling seafood caught by local fishermen, like whole black garoupa grilled with Himalayan salt (B750). He also does some fine slow-roasted meats like the 20-hour-cooked Australian wagyu short ribs (B800). Before tucking into the grill, also be sure to order the iced seafood tower (B1,800), packed with oysters, prawns, mantis shrimps and green mussels, served with Thai-style green seafood sauce. The restaurant has ndoor and outdoor seating, both of which benefit from beach views. The outdoor section connects with the Pool Bar. 107 Phetkasem Rd., 032-904-666. goo.gl/lThM0N

Laciana by the Sea Hidden behind Hua Hin Soi 3, Laciana is a casual eatery serving home-style Italian food in hearty portions. This restaurant's outdoor area consists of country-style wooden furniture, worn brick paths and a rustic, birdbath-fountain to make for a particularly laid-back setting. Inside you'll find large tables, rustic bric-a-brac and couches. Highlights include mixed seafood spaghetti

Youyen Garden Youyen Garden comes from the people behind long-standing Hua Hin restaurant Youyen Balcony on Phetkasem Road. This one offers a vast green space right beside the beach but still serves the same mix of Thai and international dishes as the original branch, such as mee krob phu wa (crispy noodle, B170), namprik khai pu (chili paste with crab egg, B180), khung morakot (prawns in pesto sauce, B425), soft-shell crab with black pepper sauce (B300) and prawns in tamarind sauce (B425). Their coffee house Baan Kafae Hua Hin still offers all-time favorite such as coconut cake (B110), Thai tea cake (B100), white chocolate cake (B100) and tiramisu (B140).

Hua Hin Bike Lane The first stretch of Hua Hin’s B157million bike lane pilot project has now opened, letting you ride the five kilometers distance from Khao Tao to Pranburi. Though the Department of Highways has still to officially cut the ribbon, cyclists are already welcome to use it. Laciana by the Sea

SEE & DO Hua Hin Photo Festival Hua Hin is currently hosting its first ever Hua Hin Photo Festival, a month-long celebration of photography that kicked off on Apr 29. Like the rest of the project, they feature a hodgepodge of styles. Rates range from B5,297 for superior rooms to B22,363 for the 69-sq-meter Executive room. In the community mall, you’ll find stores selling local products as well as the Thai-meets-Western restaurant Na Kid Tueng (Wine I Miss You) and Sala Chalerm Kin, which specializes in tantalizing Thai desserts. On the same plot of land, Chuchai has also restored a 200-year-old Thai pavilion into an exhibition and function space called Chai Nataraj, and opened Larn Sattha (Faith Square) and Love Square, which are home to Hindu shrines where visitors can go and wish for good fortune.

Design It Yourself The new limited-edition T-shirts of Japanese casual-wear brand Uniqlo are not designed by any big-name artist but by you. The brand has launched the new UTme! app on App Store and Google Play to let you design your own signature T-shirt print to have screen-printed at Uniqlo (CentralWorld branch only). For the launch weekend, Uniqlo also teamed up with three Thai artists— Wisut Ponnimit, Jay the Rabbit and Captain Cholathorn—to offer special designs that you could mix on your T-shirt. After sending your print to the store, it’ll take within a day before your T-shirt’s ready to pick up. The price is B790. 3/F, CentralWorld, Ratchadamri Rd., 02-613-1465. BTS Siam/Chit Lom

GYM

Class Act 911byJT is actress Janie Thienphosuvan’s huge new fitness complex out on Kaset-Nawamin. The giant (2,500 sq meters) warehouse is kind of like a community space for fitness freaks, all hinged around Thai boxing, dance classes (911 The Studio), yoga (911 The Bloc) and open gym (Smash Gym). Kickboxing, run in collaboration with Muay Thai Mania, costs B6,000 for unlimited monthly membership or B550 for a day pass. Dance classes (Zumba, Urbhanize, Piloxing, Bolly Dazz, Hulax) go from B500 for a single session to B2,400 for eight sessions/month. 56 Prasertmanukij Rd., 02-157-1715 and 087-595-5559. www.911byjt.com

FASHION

Cool Collab We haven’t seen Marks & Spencer trying anything new and stylish for some time, but this month the classic British clothing store teams up with style icon Alexa Chung to create a special womenswear collection dubbed Alexa Chung Rediscovers Our Archive. Don’t get things wrong, this collection is not exactly designed by Chung, rather, Chung worked together with the brand’s design team to handpick her favorite pieces from old collections, which have then been updated while keeping a classic daily-wear look. We like the turtleneck Harry Blouse (B1,990) for its classy white color and casual look, as well as the double-breasted Ada Blazer—a must-have for your workwear. You only have a tiny window left to buy the collection, which is available exclusively at CentralWorld and Central Plaza Pinklao from May 13-15. 1/F, CentralWorld, Ratchadamri Rd., 02-100-9999. CITY LIVING

Team Thailand More good news from the social enterprise world. The community-based touring website Local Alike took home the big award at the second edition of The Venture business competition, hosted by Pernod Ricard Thailand. The competition helps fund young Thai entrepreneurs whose business ideas have the potential to improve society. The awards kicked off last year with the now-famous SocialGiver winning. Local Alike is a tour operator that plans unique trips which are designed to build a bridge between local communities and tourists. Having won the Thailand stage, Local Alike will now represent Thailand on the global stage, held in New York City, with the aim of coming home with US$1 million in funding. Freeze Frozen Yogurt

The store: We never realized Lad Phrao was this cool until photos of this pastel pink dessert shop started bombarding our Instagram feed. Situated right next door to the hip Organic Supply, Freeze Frozen Yogurt is a two-unit store selling clothing under the name Thieves Studio as well as a range of house-made frozen yogurt. Expect to find secondhand apparel, footwear and accessories from Thai and international brands including Greyhound and Sretsis.

The store: Artist-led initiative Tentacles upped sticks from Thonglor to open a cafe and art store in Yannawa. Part of the same art-driven warehouse complex as Gallery Ver, the space sells art supplies and hosts creative workshops that focus on embroidery, painting and pottery.

The store: RCA’s new bookstore is also a bar—with a gallery and co-working space thrown in, too. The single-room bookstore features mostly Thai literature, translations of international books and the occasional English title. You can also expect to find plenty of older novels, box sets and even secondhand copies.

What else? You can enjoy Freeze’s frozen yogurt (starting at B79 with one topping) alone, as a soda float (B89) or parfait (B169-179) with homemade toppings like crumble, brownie and sauces. Nak Niwat Road, Lad Prao Soi 71, 095-1646551. Open Tue-Sun 11am-8pm. www.fb. com/freezefroyo

Printa Cafe and Glazziq The store: The hip Pan Road just welcomed another lifestyle cafe that combines coffee and brunch with shopping. Printa Cafe doubles as a shop for its owner’s glasses brand, Glazziq. The simple designs come in a variety of colors, gradients and materials with prices starting from B1,990. But do note that the models shown at the cafe are only samples—you need to order online to get the products delivered at home. What else? The cafe offers a spicy twist on the classic breakfast. Try the Healthy Benedict, in which they use slightly sweeter toast topped with mashed avocado, poached egg and Sriracha sauce (B190). 36/2 Pan Rd., 095-542-4575. Open daily 7:30am-6pm. www.fb.com/printacafe

What else? Aeropress coffee starts from B60 and French press from B90. There is also loose leaf (B120 per pot) and infusion tea (B100 per pot), and Italian sodas (B65). Easy bites include all-day breakfast (cheese and sweetcorn scrambled eggs with salad and toast, B120), three-cheese grilled sandwiches (B130) and tagliatelle pasta with homemade pesto (B180). 2198/10-11 Narathiwas Soi 22, 089-117-3434 and 082-487-1487. Open Tue-Sun 11am-9pm

(Un) Fashion Dining The store: Ekamai Mall’s hip vintage shopcum-cafe has spread its wings and opened a proper restaurant in the same complex. The wood-heavy space gives out a chill, beach-y vibe offering proper dining along with a shopping zone packed with new home decor items imported from the US. Highlights range from bags and shoes to magazines and kitchenware. What else? On top of the coffee and desserts you could already expect from the original cafe, the food menu covers the likes of rocket salad, sandwiches, Japanese curry rice (all B185), larb moo (B230), thincrust pizza (starting at B185) and boiled Canadian lobster (starting at B780). Ekkamai Mall, Ekkamai Soi 10, 099-5279053. Open Wed-Sun 11am-10pm and Mon 11am-10pm. www.fb.com/unfashionvintage

What else? On the second floor you’ll find a co-working and gallery space, while the retro-themed 1970s Bar is hidden on the third floor, home to live bands from Fri-Sat, vintage arcade games and ice-cold Singha. RCA Block D, 21/118 Soi Soonvijai, Rama 9 Rd. Open 10:30am-9pm and Tue-Sun 10:30am-midnight. www.fb.com/z.books.rca

Method to My Madness The store: The vintage enthusiasts behind popup market staple Cheap and Cheerful have brought a dose of Charoenkrung hipster chic to Ladprao. Method to My Madness has grown from a vintage store to a bar and has plans for more to come. Ladies can hunt out ‘70s floral dresses on the second floor as their guy digs around for deadstock denim jackets which the owner carries back from where he traveled to.

Tentacles

What else? Downstairs is all about food, drink and music. The solid bites include the MMM Munchy Burger (B250), spaghetti Bolognese (B180) and classic Thaistyle fried chicken with pandanus leaves (B120), all of which can be washed down with Singha beer (B110). The space is open for events, too, with the occasional film screening and live band dropping by— expect to see some popup markets, music theme parties and talks in the future. EVENT

Worthy Cause The Bangkok Chefs Charity Gala Dinner at the Mandarin Oriental has long been the fanciest date in the Bangkok foodie calendar. For one night only (Jul 18), 21 chefs from all the top hotels come together to whip up a 10-course feast of premium produce all in aid of under-privileged children living on the Northeastern border and in the remote Omkoy district of Chiang Mai. Tickets are sold as 10-person tables, with each seat costing B12,500, and they always go quickly. HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presides over the whole thing, including the highlight charity auction, where bidders open their checkbooks to get the chefs to come and cook a personal dinner for their friends. 48 Charoenkrung Soi 40, 02-659-9000

Same but Different Formerly Senor Pico, Rembrandt hotel’s Mexican institution not only got a new name recently, but also a more traditional direction. At Mexicano, head chef Carlos Bravo presents classic Mexican specialties including freshly smashed guacamole (B250), refreshing tuna and sea bass ceviche (B325), fajitas (grilled meat, B395-595) and tacos (B250-350). We especially like the thick, six-hour-braised Angus beef rib (B650), which come smothered with pumpkin-seedy, flavorful green mole sauce. Another highlight is the new lamb chop with chocolate mole dish (B666). The bar features a wide selection of tequila with a focus on classic Mexican cocktails. NEW TABLE

One of Bangkok’s most popular food trucks has a permanent new home. You can now find Daniel Thaiger’s familiar smoky, buttery flavors on Sukhumvit Soi 30/1. Since departing Sukhumvit Soi 38 mid-2015, the truck has mainly parked up in front of Craft/Whisgars on Sukhumvit Soi 23, but that arrangement came to an abrupt end a couple of weeks ago when the bar introduced its own burger to much confusion. Looking to put the situation behind him, founder Mark Falcioni says he’s excited about the new central location. “We can also set up a French fries station and are working to try and perfect a few nice steaks out of the truck.” Next to Bangkok Carwash, Sukhumvit Soi 30/1, 084-549-0995. Open Tue-Sun 5pm-10pm (or until sold out). BTS Phrom Phong. www.fb.com/DanielThaiger

About Eatery

The buzz: Giving this city its first attempt at a “natural” wine bar, About Eatery prides itself in offering only organic and biodynamic producers, or ones who use trusted natural winemaking processes. The decor: Taking the place of what was Le Maverick, the moody lounge-bar vibe has been replaced with rustic woods, brickwork and chalkboards telling you all about the stuff on offer. There’s also an outside terrace located right in front for a quick bite to eat in the sunshine. The food: In addition to the offerings on the cold cuts counter and raw bar, chef Vasileios Vasileiadis rolls out a compact list of Mediterranean-inspired dishes like chickpea soup (B270), cucumber and zucchini salad with Greek yogurt sauce (B250), smoked eggplant (B220), housemade pasta (B290-450) and oven-steamed sea bass with white wine (B920). Or opt for tapas like Sicilian anchovy (B190) served on top of green sauce with ricotta and cheese cracker, grilled Sloane’s sausage (B160), Spanish tortilla (egg and potato cake, B190) and nduja pork sausage (B180). Desserts include carrot cake (B60), tiramisu (B90) and chocolate coconut mousse (B80).

The drinks: The wine menu features sparkling, red, white, rose and what’s called “orange wine” (white wine made using the same method as red wine), with icons indicating each wine’s viniculture (whether it’s organic, biodynamic, or made in a sustainable way), aging (in oak or stainless steel cask, amphora or cement jar), and whether the wine is made with natural yeast (no extra yeast added) and suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Prices start at B160 by the glass. Even if you’re not into wine, you can go for one the L’olmaia craft beers from Italy (B250), or hard-to-find spirits including Kristall gin (B970/bottle, B180/shot) and Edinburgh gin (B1,820/bottle, B390/shot). Why you should care: Wine lovers have got a new hangout spot, while drink newbies can learn more about wine at this cozy place. Natcha Sanguankiattichai Sukhumvit Soi 21 (Soi 3), 02-665-2772. NEIGHBORHOOD

Tastes of Thonglor Twelve new dishes you need to taste on this hot dining strip. By BK Staff Meat & Bones

Barrio Bonito

Barrio Bonito’s Guacamole Lady Brett’s Diamond Clams The Janagara Zenburi Black (B220) (B500) Ramen at Kyushu Jangara Koh Chang’s number one restaurant on Tri- Stock up on a side order of Conkey’s bread (B360) padvisor branched out to Bangkok when the Commons opened. Honestly, all the traditional Mexican flavors here sing, but we especially like owner-chef Mariana Villalobos Torres’s take on guacamole, served in crispy corn tortilla cones.

and dunk your way to indigestion in this bowl of decadent, buttery broth bursting with seafood goodness. We could eat the sweet, plump little clams all day long, too.

M/F, The Commons, Thonglor Soi 17, 02-1014526

Meat & Bones’ Beef Rib (B480)

Jona Waffles’ Plain Waffle (B120) Le Cordon Bleu grad Songpon Wongpaisan specializes in overnight yeast-raised waffles. The result: a crispier crust, lighter interior, and little trace of yeasty flavor. There’s a heap of different toppings you can add to the B120 base price, but the plain waffle tastes good enough on its own. 2/F, The Commons, Thonglor Soi 17, 02-1014526

Holy Moly’s Camembert with Salted Caramel Pie (B155) The super-thin and crispy puff pastry is made using the best French flour and butter chef Chalee Kader can get his hands on, and gets baked on-site all day long. For something totally unique, you have to try the decadent camembert with salted caramel pie—an explosion of sweet and salty flavors. We also love the Iberico pork char siu (B135), portobello mushroom with parmesan and truffle (B155), and beef stew and egg (B155) flavors. M/F, The Commons, Thonglor Soi 17, 02-1014526

72 Courtyard, 72 Sukhumvit Soi 55, 02-392-7626

The roasting time may have dropped from twelve to eight hours, but M&B’s rib smothered in their own-recipe sauce still features tender beef that falls from the bone and is packed with smoky flavor. M/F, The Commons, Thonglor Soi 17, 02-101-4526

Soul Food 555’s Khao Soi Cowboy Burger (B259) The most rewarding of this Soul Food spinoff’s three new Thai fusion burgers. Served with sweet potato and mustard pickles, the pulled pork in khao soy curry is ferociously fiery with a satisfying crunch owing to its crispy egg noodles. Rocket X 72 Courtyard’s Salmon x Eggs Bagel (B175) The fourth branch of the chic Scandinavian brunch and coffee spot Rocket comes in the form of a quick “grab and go” pitstop at Thonglor’s 72 Courtyard community mall. Made fresh daily, the newly-launched bagel features a nice crispy crust and a slightly chewy interior, packed with housecured salmon, scrambled eggs, spring and sour cream for a flavorful combo that sticks to Rocket’s strengths.

Brew, Beers & Cider

Pa t i s s e r i e P o t a g e r ’ s Capsicum Cheese Cake Brew, Beers & Ciders’ Simply the Best Burgers (B165) This new Japanese dessert cafe has come up (B190-290) with the genius solution of packing cheesecake full of veggie vitamins. Skip the cauliflower tiramisu and ivy gourd and tomato shortcake and head straight for the capsicum cheesecake—a one-of-a-kind combination which tastes delicious. 111/1 Thonglor Soi 5, 095-962-0324

72 Courtyard, 72 Sukhumvit Soi 55, 02-3927626

Lady Brett’s Chicken Burger Hamakatsu’s Cheese, Pork (B320) For something crunchy and hearty, look no Loin and Pork Fillet Set further than the monstrous buttermilk fried (B395) chicken sandwich (B320) at Lady Brett’s new Thonglor outpost, which features light and crispy chicken, lettuce, spicy sauce and pickles.

At B360, it’s a pretty pricey bowl of noodles, but those wobbling lumps of fatty meat make all the difference compared to your standard slithers of chashu. While the original stock is smooth and richly flavored, we also favor the garlicky black ramen, whose intimidating, heavy appearance disguises a flavor that’s actually quite refined, with unusual tastes of aniseed and chamomile poking through the salty broth.

This whopping set also comes with a deepfried prawn. The golden cutlets are almost free from oil with genuinely tender pork housed in perfectly crisp breading. The Taste Thonglor, 235 Sukhumvit Soi 55, 02-712-7843

This Daniel Thaiger collaboration goes back to basics, aiming to recapture all that was good about old-school American fast food. The patties are made from prime cuts of Aussie wagyu and angus beef, nestled between local breadmaker Conkey’s steamed potato bun, which holds up admirably to the winning combo of gooey Cheswick cheese and garlicky Thousand Islandslike sauce. Available as double, triple and quad stacks in classic (B190/240/280) and BBQ (which adds bacon, jalapenos and a tangy BBQ sauce, B200/250/290) forms.

OPEN DOOR

Bunker Carved out of raw concrete comes this contempory take on classic dishes. The buzz: Here comes one of the most anticipated restaurants this year. From a distance, Bunker will be familiar to fans of Eat Me (7th in Top Tables 2016). Both were designed by Kelly Wheatley; and Eat Me's chef, Tim Butler, is one of Bunker's backers. He's not in the kitchen, though, which is helmed by Arnold Marcella, formerly head of The Elm in New York City and a protege of two-Michelin-star chef Paul Liebrandt. Marcella aims to "break the mold of what contemporary cuisine can be in Southeast Asia." The decor: Wheatley is still doing pared-down modernism that articulates bold blocks of bare concrete with a lightness of touch that defies his material of choice. But while Eat Me welcomes the tropics into its mini courtyard and balconies, Bunker's craggy

16

lines, although somewhat softened by turquoise banquettes and octogonal globes of lights, remain unabashed brutalism. The food: Fresh, simple, well-executed, original yet devoid of gimmicks, Marcella's output is off to a promising start. Some of the menu's 16 dishes verge on tapas portions, such as a single octopus tendril with two baby lettuce leaves and a couple dollops of peanut chili sauce (B600). Flavors are anything but small, though: the wagyu beef tartar (B375) is spiked with daikon radish and radish sprouts; the cured foie gras torchon paired with candied cashew and chili mango (B550). Thankfully, the mains are unlikely to leave you feeling hungry. The decadently fatty plate of smokey wagyu short rib (B950), the grilled quails with

arrowhead spinach, chestnets, black garlic and a hint of tamarind (B825) or the saltbush lamb with black eggplant, yuzu and Tokyo turnips (B850) are all big enough to share. The drinks: Diageo World Class 2015 finalist Natakorn Changrew runs the cocktail bar alongside Kiattikoon Auengkum (formerly of Marcel bistro). The signature Bourbon Maple Sour (B360) is a musttry, using Kentucky bourbon, maple syrup, egg white and lime juice, as is the Paloma (tequila and grapefruit soda, Campari, pineapple and candied orange, B280). Gregoire Glachant 118/2 Sathorn Soi 12, 092-563-9991. Open Tue-Sun 6pm-1am

Endo Sushi

NEW AND NOTED

Market Fresh This sushi spot hails from a four-generations-old Osakan restaurant of the same name, located in the city's fish market. For this first branch outside the motherland, Endo Sushi (2/F, The Taste, Thonglor Soi 11, 02-712-5211) offers the same easygoing sushi with a focus on affordable cuts of fresh fish. Pull up a seat at the counter and start ordering, with maguro, engawa, hamachi and squid nigiri all priced at B80/piece. More premium stuff like uni and otoro (fatty tuna) come in at B320/piece. Or opt for a set of five assorted sushi at B450. The compact restaurant also offers some grilled and fried dishes. Sake starts at B380/300ml.

Into the Blu Blu36 (23/7 Napasub Soi 2, Sukhumvit Soi 36, 02-661-5448) serves Peruvian food from a home that's been converted into a dining room with outdoor terrace. Filipino chef Joel Neri rolls out a range traditional dishes like ceviche (raw fish marinated in lime and chili, B320-350), anticuchos de lomo (beef skew-

Wash it down with pisco sour (B220), which comes in house-infused options like blueberry, chili, ginger and eucalyptus.

Cows & Ice Beef & Shake (93 Narathiwas Rd., 095-949-2646. BTS Chong Nonsi) has gone from a pop-up, to an all-in heavy-duty burger spot right under BTS Chong Nonsi. Owner Thanase Linhavets takes ingredients like Australian wagyu beef and Singaporean portobello mushrooms, turns them into burgers and then pairs them with the likes of cheesy fries (B95) and milkshakes using Creamery's ice cream (B175). There are four choices: beef (B199), pork (B165), crispy kinoko (mushroom marinated with fresh herbs, garlic and balsamic vinegar, B155) and crispy portobello mushroom (B155). All are available with cheese (B10) and double patties (B40). There's also a range of salads from B55.

This smartly refurbished shop-house on the fringes of Chinatown does some of Bangkok’s best sandwiches. 2nd Yard’s menu may be brief but there’s no faulting the flavors, which get more innovative the more you splash out. Select from seven fillings that range from mushroom and cheese (B180) up to grilled beef (B450) and grilled unagi (freshwater eel, B550), each served between two pieces of lightlycharred ciabatta. The beef option, in particular, is wonderful with the juicy strips of meat complemented by a sharp mix of mustard, pickle, rocket and shallot—a heftily-portioned, proper premium sandwich. The unagi is also a fusion hit, packing a seriously spicy punch due to the grilled green pepper and ponzu sauce. We love the soft texture and bold, rich taste of the eel, though we perhaps wish the bread

A co l l a b o ra t i o n b e t we e n Fre n c h restaurateur Frederic Meyer (Issaya Siamese Club and Namsaah) and Italian chef Luca Apino (La Bottega di Luca), this is a pizza restaurant with a difference: the menu makes the occasional reference to the French coastal city of Marseille on top of its classic Italian fare. The dining room at this Ruamrudee location (the restaurant started life as a pizza truck) is also a fauxFrench mix of show fireplaces, baby-blue walls, and parquet floors that makes for an unusual setting to sit and eat simple woodfired dishes. Apino has imported two massive pizza ovens from Italy—and a chef, Flavio Argenio, whose past experience working in Marseille makes him an ideal fit for this “Italy with a touch of Provence” concept. There are only two places in town with these fancy, imported pizza ovens— Ratings

had spent a little longer on the grill. Generally, though, this ciabatta is delicious and chewy yet firm—there’s a reason you won’t be offered cutlery. Though less exciting, the mushroom and cheese is still a solid handful, all gooey mozzarella and parmesan. Dessert is limited to ice-cream sandwiches (B150), which are a bit of a bread overload, but there are some spot-on if predictable appetizers. The perfectly crisp, deep-fried squid (B250) are so light and flavorful you don’t need any dipping sauce, while the hash browns (B100) are irregularsized nuggets of golden goodness that come with a nice, mushy center. Since opening last November with an emphasis on fruity shakes (do try the Tropical Carnival, mango, pineapple and lychee syrup with the interesting addition of thyme, B75), 2nd Yard has grown into a proper nightspot with a well-stocked bar, craft beers and cocktails starting from B280. The comparisons with Phra Athit’s Escapade Burgers and Shakes are obvious, and it’s perhaps no surprise they acted as consultants here. Thankfully there’s far less surliness on show, though on our last visit the partners far outnumbered the patrons making for a slightly awkward experience. Aside from the solid sandwiches and drinks, part of 2nd Yard’s appeal is its location amid the crumbling walls and auto shops of Talad Noi. But truth is this is the kind of barebones, effortlessly cool spot you’d welcome in your own neighborhood. Note: It’s cash-only.

Peppina and Pizza Massilia—making comparisons inevitable. Versus Peppina’s billowing crusts and charred bases, the pies at Massilia (starting B250) are a refined affair but no less tasty. While there’s a certain pleasure to the restaurant’s most creative offerings—think pizza topped with rich sea urchin doused in salty-sweet yellow tomato sauce (B690)—we still find the simpler numbers the most satisfying. The piquant Italian tomatoes and delicate dough (Argenio mixes it with Minere mineral water, keeps his flour airconditioned and uses only natural yeast) come through most strongly in varieties like the Buffalina (B490), on which distractions are limited to a creamy Salerno buffalo mozzarella, basil and extra virgin olive oil. Stray from the pizzas however and it’s hard to detect the same level of love in Massilia’s other starters and mains. A rendition of tomates farcies (tomatoes stuffed with sausage on a bed of couscous, B490) is a rather flavorless affair, as is their unremarkable lasagne alla Bolognese (B390). But these wrong steps are of little consequence: Massilia’s pizzas are good enough to justify a visit on their own. Finish the meal with a charmingly kitsch citron givre (lemon sorbet and pistachio crumble served up in a hollowed-out lemon, B290), knock back glasses of Peroni (B180) or a bottle of the 2013 Monferrato DOC Barbera Nebbiolo Merlot (B1,700), and you’re guaranteed a satisfying meal.
