Well, the government would ban it, of course. That’s exactly what happened to UberMoto and GrabBike, who clearly were cutting into the revenue stream of our boys in brown. What’s more, the junta now says it will develop its very own app for motocycle taxis.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

Earlier this month, Chiang Mai-based artist Sutthirat “Som” Supaparinya, 42, launched Paradise of the Blind, an art exhibition made from books that have been banned around the world. Running through May 29, the project is the first installment of Silom library-slash-gallery The Reading Room’s “Sleepover” art project, which has invited six artists to take over the space with cultural projects. Som explains her motives behind the artwork, which has already attracted the attention of plainclothes police and soldiers. What inspired you to create the exhibition? It started when I undertook an artist residency program in Taiwan back in 2013. My Taiwanese friend told me her country no longer banned any books. This stuck with me until I did another artist-in-residence program in Wellington, New Zealand, last October. I spent most of my time there in the public library searching for books that were banned in Oceania before expanding to other continents. My research finally became “Steal This Book,” an art exhibition about books that were banned. I took the name from a book by 60s’ American political activist Abbie Hoffman, which was banned in Canada and the US. When I was asked to join Reading Room’s Sleepover project, I decided to polish it up with more books that were banned around ASEAN, including Paradise of the Blind, a novel that was banned in Vietnam. I also used this book as the name of the exhibition as I feel it suits our country’s situation where people try to ignore crucial situations in order to stay happy. How do you feel about police and soldiers showing up to your event?

I’m not so worried, as I only picked books that aren’t banned in Thailand. But they were really curious about one particular book that I exhibit, Chom Na Sakdina Thai [The Face of Thai Feudalism], which was written by the late democracy leader Chit Phumisak in 1957 and banned for a time in 1977. It seems they didn’t do their homework, though, as they kept asking me to explain the story of this book. I told them I don’t need to, because it’s sold everywhere. It’s even in the government’s list of 100 good books that Thais should read. Everything went smooth after that? Yes, they stopped bothering me after that. Actually, I faced some issues even before the exhibition took place. I tried to buy used shotgun cartridges to put in the exhibition but no one would sell to me in large numbers, even the shooting ranges. I tried to hire metalsmiths to make them for me, but they all rejected. Luckily, I finally found out you can buy them from the Royal Thai Army Ordnance Department. That was such a surprise for me.

It seems that more and more art exhibitions are coming under government surveillance. How do you feel about this? Before now, the government may have not thought that art can really impact society. But we are seeing artists collaborate with more people in different professions, such as activists and musicians. As the art circles grow wider and wider, we might see the government become even more concerned. Still, our situation is much better than in neighboring countries like Myanmar and Laos, where all artists need to propose their work one month in advance in order to get permission. This might be the first time we get a taste of what our neighbors have become accustomed to. What’s next for you? As I’m working with Chiang Mai Art Conversation [CAC] group, we’re now teaming up with The Japan Foundation Asia Center to found the Asian Culture Station in Chiang Mai within a few months. hen it comes to fashion, women have never been short of options here in Bangkok. But there have been some particularly exciting developments in recent times. Big malls have introduced new multi-label zones dedicated to Thai designers, like Thai Thai at Central Chidlom and Qurator at The Emquartier. The other growing trend has been standalone multi-label stores showcasing the best in emerging online brands who have not yet opened their own store. The likes of SOS and Statement are at the forefront of this growing movement. Here are six stores every stylish girl in Bangkok should know.

Shoppers tell us their favorite womenswear stores

Statement Thonglor’s bright white multi-label store gathers a number of fresh-faced Thai designers who don’t yet have their own showrooms. It also offers cold brew coffee, granola and cocktails (on weekends).

But with online shopping, instead of seeing the bank notes being taken out of my purse and feeling guilty, it's now just a touch on the screen to transfer the money. Launched two years ago, SOS’s selection spans apparel, shoes, bags and accessories—everything, basically. Good for: Despite the huge selection, don’t expect too much in the way of street fashion. Clothing sticks to smart-casual and formal styles, plus some swimwear and loads of cute accessories, bags and shoes. House of Fashion keeps things minimal, stocking only 25 brands (work-to-party wear, leather bags and shoes) that are all capable of being mixed and matched. Brands include Vintage Peacock leather bags, That JRP shoes, Palita and Vanillin Bangkokseoul womenswear, and from Luxe Swimsuit swimwear. Good for: The shop might look similar to Statement in terms of style and stock, but the selection is considerably different. The huge fashion retailer offers a range of high street international designers and local brands, like Superdry, New Look, Aldo, Michael Kors and Asawa. They even have an "outlet" section, their own label and a fashion blog. There’s also menswear and kids’ apparel.

Another go-to fashion spot that provides apparel, accessories and footwear alongside beauty essentials and skincare. The massive brand list includes leading inter labels and local boutiques.

This website is pretty different from the rest. Shop Shot doesn’t have its own product line, but rather acts as an online marketplace for many of the country’s hottest Instagram stores. Another feature is its lifestyle content which covers new brands, product picks of the month and trend pieces that are actually reliable.

Good for: Minimal street style with fun pieces to spice up an outfit. Also perfect for chic office and casual attire that doesn’t look like you’re trying too hard.

Burmese Lanna The owner of Lanna Palace 2004 hotel, Narong Sarachon, has opened a new boutique stay inspired by the red wood buildings of Myanmar, The Chaya (053-245-995, www. fb.com/the.chaya.resort). The two-story building comprises three room types: Deluxe (from B3,920), Executive Suite (B5,920) and Chaya Pool Access (B7,290). Guests can prepare to be spoiled, too. All rooms include free minibars—aside from soft drinks and juices, Executive rooms come with six free beers, while the Chaya Pool Access has free SangSom. Guests can take the all-day breakfast whenever they want and between 6am-10pm they can order free tea and coffee from the in-house Perfect Blend cafe, which uses beans from Chiang Mai’s Doi Wawee. The hotel is located near Wat Suan Dok on Suthep Road, with the hip Nimmanhaemin neighborhood just a few minutes away. A free shuttle bus can also whisk you away to the Old Town or night markets.

Harder Stronger Hard Rock has opened its first new Thai branch in 15 years: Hard Rock Cafe Koh Samui (077-901-208, goo.gl/BqOV6A). Located amid the busy nightlife of Chaweng Beach, the new opening is exactly what you’d expect from the seasoned, rock ’n’ roll-themed chain. Indoors keeps things classic with long Chesterfield sofas and walls adorned with artworks and memorabilia featuring Taylor Swift, Madonna, The Beatles, Slash, Santana and Pearl Jam. There’s an outdoor terrace complete with pool and a stage for live music. Food and drinks cover the usual American smokehouse fare, from hamburgers to slowcooked ribs along with classic cocktails.

Kuala Luxe St. Regis Kuala Lumpur (goo. gl/173HKb) is the Malaysian capital’s latest luxe hotel opening, and follows hot on the heels of the brand’s expansion into Langkawi. Supposedly taking its cues from Manhattan high-rises, the hotels offers 208 elegant rooms and suites (from 62 sq meters to 137 sq meters)—all with walk-in wardrobes. Big-spenders can live it up in the 371-sq-meter Royal Suite, which is accessed by a private elevator and comes with an en-suite massage room and gym. But for now only the Deluxe rooms available—opening rates start from RM1,084 (B9,543). But the highlight might be the six in-house restaurants and bars including Taka by Sushi Saito, the first restaurant to open outside Tokyo by three Michelin-starred chef Takashi Saito, and Ginza Tenkuni, a branch of a 131-year-old Japanese restaurant that serves Edo-style tempura. The hotel is handily located right next to Kuala Lumpur Sentral train station, within spitting distance of attractions like the National Monument, Sri Kondaswamy Kovil Hindu Temple and Little India.

The solid drinks list ticks all the right boxes (classics, barrel-aged, etc.), as does the handsome industrial decor that combines leather, brassed metal and the obligatory bare bulbs. The Bangkok branch of the Sydney-based restaurant does away with Mexican food’s usual format of big portions and low-key vibe. Instead, Mejico aims to give its food a more exciting edge by incorporating modern twists like guacamole made table-side and served with banana chips. On top of the food, there are also over 190 tequila labels behind the bar, which get poured into some delicious cocktails like the signature margarita (B250), which mixes El Jimador blanco tequila, mango, coconut and pandan into a sort of pina colada-margarita hybrid—as delicious as it sounds.

Riedel, Austrian maker of some of the world’s finest crystal wine glasses, has licensed its name to this wine bar equipped with a state-of-the-art wine dispenser which allows for up to 40 open bottles to be stored without oxidizing. The result is a huge list of wines to try by the glass, ranging in price from just B60 up to B640. The space oozes quality, from the gorgeously smooth, open-pore wooden tables to the wall of cool, brushed-steel wine dispensers, but we recommend heading out to the open balcony—one of the best alfresco dining spots in the area—and ordering up some of the Med-inflenced tapas.

The owner of cutesy bistro Line-Up at The Portico community mall has teamed up with Chef Chalee Kader of Surface to transform it into The Beer Bridge. Reminiscent of a spacious beer cellar, the venue puts the focus on craft beer and booze-friendly bites, with simple yet thoughtful tapas dishes and comfort food. This rooftop cocktail lounge takes you back to the jazz age. The two-story space sports prohibition era-inspired decor, featuring lots of dark woods and Art Deco touches. A balcony on the 24th floor lets you take in 180-degree views of Bangkok’s business district, while an alfresco rooftop offers a more leisurely atmosphere. Try classic cocktails that really pack a punch, like the Brandy Crusta (B330), which combines Hennessy VSOP, orange curacao and bitters.

This rooftop bistro and bar offers a happening vibe thanks to clean black-and-white industrial decor (think New York subway tiles and metal cafe chairs), a DJ booth that pumps out house tunes and a loungey area overlooking Phloen Chit. The fourth floor views can’t compete with the most famous rooftop bar on top of hotels, but you do get a suitably urban vibe due its very central location. Overall it’s a laidback and highly affordable option (cocktails from B210) with a menu of fuss-free comfort food such as risottos, pastas or fish and chips.

Octagon This rooftop bar sits modestly on the fourth floor of The Mercury Ville community mall. It’s decked out in the requisite fake grass and rattan benches, conjuring a laidback garden vibe, while an octagon-shaped open bar sits at the venue’s center. The food is international fusion, including beer-friendly choices like deepfried seafood, spaghetti garlic and dried chili and barbecue sausage. Asahi is available on tap (B798 for a 3-liter tower) and they claim to serve it extra cold at -2 degree Celsius. Sorrento A familiar name for Italian food gets a modern makeover in Sathorn. The buzz: Dating back to the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;80s, Sorrento is one of the city's oldest names for Italian food, formerly located at the spot that is now Tenyuu Grand. Just before it closed down, Diageo World Class 2015 winner Pongpak "Ton" Sudthipongse and partners decided to continue its legacy by opening a new place with the same name. Here, the focus is as much on drinks as it is on home-style Italian dishes. The decor: Distinguishing it from the surrounding shop-houses, Sorrento occupies a white standalone building which has space out front for outdoor tables. Inside is a sleek take on a traditional trattoria with brick walls and a library-themed private room. A garden at the center of the house adds a touch of greenery. The food: The kitchen is helmed by the original Sorrento team who serve old favorites alongside some new dishes that make use of

modern sous-vide and compression techniques. But the focus really is on traditional cooking. Classics include the Pizza Sorrento (B490), two layers of crispy crust sandwiching ham, rocket, tomato and mascarpone cheese, and the herb-stuffed, grilled lamb rack (B690) with ratatouille and spinach. The roasted snowfish (B690) with chorizo and bell pepper relish is another throwback selection. One highlight is the pasta cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper, B360-460), made in a large Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese wheel with flamed cognac to melt the cheese. Do also try the fresh tiramisu (B165).

The Don (Chivas Regal Extra, port wine, cherry syrup and black walnut bitters served in a rosemary-smoked rock glass, B320) going well with food. We recommend the twist on the classic Italian cocktail sgroppino (lemon sorbet, gin, sparkling wine and basil, B320). Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also find classics like Sazerac (B390) and the unusual Corpse Reviver No. 2 (gin, yuzu-infused sake, vermouth bianco, Cointreau, lemon juice and absinthe, B320).

The drinks: Expectations are high given Ton's experience behind the bar. Cocktails follow a similar philosophy to the food, mixing classic recipes with modern techniques (they even sous-vide the gin). The results are light and refreshing, with even spirit-forward choices like

The ex-Disney star turned pop singer, aka Justin Bieber's ex-girlfriend, will be making her way to the Bangkok stage for the first time this summer. Fans can expect performances of her brand new hits from her latest album Revival, such as "Good for You" and "Same Old Love" as well as many of her other guilty-pleasure songs from previous albums.

After dropping hints on his Younow clips, it has been confirmed that Charlie Puth will be coming to Bangkok this Mother's Day, Aug 12. Bangkok may be home to more art galleries and cool exhibitions than ever before, but not too many really push into controversial territory. That’s what makes the current exhibition at The Reading Room, dubbed Paradise for the Blind, that much more interesting. Running through May 29, the exhibition presents a collection of artworks made from shredded (and whole) censored books that artist Sutthirat Supaparinya (see our interview, page 4) has gathered and studied. All the books used have either been censored or banned in various countries around Asia, including Chit Phumisak’s The Real Face of Thai Feudalism, Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s All That Is Gone and Noam Chomsky’s Year 501: The Conquest Continues. The project is the first installment of The Reading Room’s “Sleepover” art project, which has invited six artists to take over the space of the library with cultural projects. The next installment, taking place throughout the month of June, will welcome Southeast of Now, a group of Southeast Asian art historians who have launched a journal discussing the directions of contemporary and modern art. The afternoon involves talks from five Teach for Thailand keynote speakers followed by members sharing their teaching experiences at various in-need schools over the past two years. Teach for Thailand is a non-profit organization with a mission to end inequality in Thai education by building an idea-sharing community of young leaders. SPECIAL SCREENINGS Future Shorts is an international pop-up “social cinema” festival that has taken place in 300 cities since its launch in 2011. This May 29, it returns to Bangkok for its spring season, taking movie lovers to the Old Town for a night of laid-back screenings of international short films. Previous years’ events have screened films like Basile Doganis’ Citizen Day, Samuel Abrahams’ Offline Dating and Arev Manoukian’s Nuit Blanche. Apart from the movies, expect plenty of live music, art, trendy food and unlimited popcorn throughout the night.
