Phra Khanong might actually be cool. Finally. We’ve been saying it for years, but now we’re just about sure of it. With arrivals like Craftsman Barber Shop, low-key Japanese sake-sochu bar Koryoriya-te and countless condo developments, Pridi Banomyong Soi 3 is finally coming alive. Even expat central, W Market, has welcomed some exciting new faces, led by Vietnamese sandwich specialist Banh Mi Crispy.

Top restaurants are sprouting their own cafes Now that Iron Chef Table has branched out with Iron Chef Cafe at Central Eastville and Osha has opened Osha Cafe at Asiatique, it’s Robuchon’s turn to unveil Le Salon de L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, which is coming very soon at Central Embassy. If that’s not enough, Muteki, the already-cafe-like sister of Mugendai, just launched Muteki Cafe at Eastville.

Taking place from Jun 6-12, the 2016 edition will involve at least 28 bars and restaurants in Bangkok (1881 by Water Library, Salt Aree, Vesper, Bunker and more heavy-hitters), with a portion of every negroni you buy going to charity. The launch party happens at House on Sathorn (see page 22). www. negroniweek.com Rock and roll’s not dead Last weekend Silom bar Whiteline packed in three nights featuring Bangkok’s finest indie-rock acts. upfront HOT OR NOT

Hot: Banned Books

Not: Banned National Costumes

We don’t like having to agree with the Ministry of Culture’s Deputy Permanent Secretary, but Mrs. (yes, Mrs., not Miss) Universe Thailand’s costume was genuinely horrendous. That bizarre bell-shaped goop of gold meant to evoke Wat Pra Kaew’s Golden Stupa is fully deserving of some attitude adjustment. But to show we haven’t turned into full fascists just yet, we’ll be supporting the Sleepover project on banned books at The Reading Room instead (see right).

INTERVIEW

Hot: Online shopping Not: Malls Last month, Central Group bought Zalora Thailand (and Vietnam) while Alibaba took a controlling stake in Lazada. This was seen as signs that online shopping in Thailand is growing much more slowly than expected. But maybe it’s just that Thai consumers are so fragmented in their web shopping habits. See our cover story for a multitude of online multi-label stores, and IG-focused standalones, that will spare you having to set foot in mall for a very long time.

Hot: Siam Discovery

Not: Your credit card

Can we take that back? Of course, you still want to go to a mall. With its reopening, Siam Discovery brings a Virgin Fitness and one of the best Thai fashion selections in the city. And people are actually excited about the Hubba co-working space because, surely, what you need is more places where you can work. Add to that the new Greyhound multi-label store at Paragon and it’s going to be a rough weekend for your credit card. See page 12.

Hot: Nepotism

Not: UberMoto

What if someone came up with an app to make motorcycle prices transparent, allowing credit card payments and forcing drivers to supply a clean helmet to their passengers? Well, the government would ban it, of course. That’s exactly what happened to UberMoto and GrabBike, who clearly were cutting into the revenue stream of our boys in brown. What’s more, the junta now says it will develop its very own app for motocycle taxis.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

4

Earlier this month, Chiang Mai-based artist Sutthirat “Som” Supaparinya, 42, launched Paradise of the Blind, an art exhibition made from books that have been banned around the world. Running through May 29, the project is the first installment of Silom library-slash-gallery The Reading Room’s “Sleepover” art project, which has invited six artists to take over the space with cultural projects. Som explains her motives behind the artwork, which has already attracted the attention of plainclothes police and soldiers. What inspired you to create the exhibition? It started when I undertook an artist residency program in Taiwan back in 2013. My Taiwanese friend told me her country no longer banned any books. This stuck with me until I did another artist-in-residence program in Wellington, New Zealand, last October. I spent most of my time there in the public library searching for books that were banned in Oceania before expanding to other continents. My research finally became “Steal This Book,” an art exhibition about books that were banned. I took the name from a book by 60s’ American political activist Abbie Hoffman, which was banned in Canada and the US. When I was asked to join Reading Room’s Sleepover project, I decided to polish it up with more books that were banned around ASEAN, including Paradise of the Blind, a novel that was banned in Vietnam. I also used this book as the name of the exhibition as I feel it suits our country’s situation where people try to ignore crucial situations in order to stay happy. How do you feel about police and soldiers showing up to your event?

I’m not so worried, as I only picked books that aren’t banned in Thailand. But they were really curious about one particular book that I exhibit, Chom Na Sakdina Thai [The Face of Thai Feudalism], which was written by the late democracy leader Chit Phumisak in 1957 and banned for a time in 1977. It seems they didn’t do their homework, though, as they kept asking me to explain the story of this book. I told them I don’t need to, because it’s sold everywhere. It’s even in the government’s list of 100 good books that Thais should read. Everything went smooth after that? Yes, they stopped bothering me after that. Actually, I faced some issues even before the exhibition took place. I tried to buy used shotgun cartridges to put in the exhibition but no one would sell to me in large numbers, even the shooting ranges. I tried to hire metalsmiths to make them for me, but they all rejected. Luckily, I finally found out you can buy them from the Royal Thai Army Ordnance Department. That was such a surprise for me.

It seems that more and more art exhibitions are coming under government surveillance. How do you feel about this? Before now, the government may have not thought that art can really impact society. But we are seeing artists collaborate with more people in different professions, such as activists and musicians. As the art circles grow wider and wider, we might see the government become even more concerned. Still, our situation is much better than in neighboring countries like Myanmar and Laos, where all artists need to propose their work one month in advance in order to get permission. This might be the first time we get a taste of what our neighbors have become accustomed to. What’s next for you? As I’m working with Chiang Mai Art Conversation [CAC] group, we’re now teaming up with The Japan Foundation Asia Center to found the Asian Culture Station in Chiang Mai within a few months. You can get updates at CAC’s Facebook page [www.fb.com/cmartconversation]. Interview by Monruedee Jansuttipan

What Women Wear Bangkok’s best multi-label stores for ladies who love Thai brands. By Vasachol Quadri and Thaksaporn Thiengthamcharoen

hen it comes to fashion, women have never been short of options here in Bangkok. But there have been some particularly exciting developments in recent times. Big malls have introduced new multi-label zones dedicated to Thai designers, like Thai Thai at Central Chidlom and Qurator at The Emquartier. The other growing trend has been standalone multi-label stores showcasing the best in emerging online brands who have not yet opened their own store. The likes of SOS and Statement are at the forefront of this growing movement. Here are six stores every stylish girl in Bangkok should know.

Shoppers tell us their favorite womenswear stores

Statement Thonglor’s bright white multi-label store gathers a number of fresh-faced Thai designers who don’t yet have their own showrooms. It also offers cold brew coffee, granola and cocktails (on weekends).

“[I like] SOS because I enjoy buying clothes from Instagram shops and it enables me to try and feel the products in real life. But with online shopping, instead of seeing the bank notes being taken out of my purse and feeling guilty, it's now just a touch on the screen to transfer the money. I buy things quicker without much consideration especially because these IG shops have such a strong brand image. ”

Good for: The owners, three fashionable ladies who’ve all launched their own labels, handpicked the pieces, which fall under smart-casual day-to-night wear, glam accessories and gym-wear. The streamlined selection features brands like Pin & Tux and Anaman, while there are also mobile accessories from Another Case, leather bags from Chatt Material, aromatic candles from Ma Chandelle and a small selection of Rams men’s accessories. Thonglor Soi 11, 02-003-6973. Open Sun-Thu 11am-10pm; Fri-Sat 11am-midnight. www.fb.com/statementofficialbkk

Sense of Style (SOS) With three branches and over 100 brands, this is the multilabel store best straddling the online and offline shopping worlds. Launched two years ago, SOS’s selection spans apparel, shoes, bags and accessories—everything, basically. Good for: Despite the huge selection, don’t expect too much in the way of street fashion. Clothing sticks to smart-casual and formal styles, plus some swimwear and loads of cute accessories, bags and shoes. Highlight brands include womenswear names Basics By Sita, Isara Shop, Style Syrups and Sis Story, Mave and Minx shoes, Mercer clutches and Xotique Official bags. Siam Square Soi 1 and 6, 096-154-6469. Open daily 1-9pm. BTS Siam Thonglor Soi 16 (opposite J-Avenue). Open Sun-Thu 1-9pm and FriSat 1-10pm. www.fb.com/sos.senseofstyleshop

“I like multi-brand platforms like ShopSpot because it shows me new brands to follow. I do follow specific IG shops directly, too, especially the ones with nice owners, but they don’t exactly fulfil my needs as I’m not always interested in specialty items like lace or high heels.” Pruepat Songtieng, 30, Assistant Lifestyle Editor at Marie Claire

House of Fashion (HOF) Located in Siam Square Soi 2, this multi-label shop looks more like a single-brand flagship with its clean, harmonious design. House of Fashion keeps things minimal, stocking only 25 brands (work-to-party wear, leather bags and shoes) that are all capable of being mixed and matched. Brands include Vintage Peacock leather bags, That JRP shoes, Palita and Vanillin Bangkokseoul womenswear, and from Luxe Swimsuit swimwear. Good for: The shop might look similar to Statement in terms of style and stock, but the selection is considerably different. We particularly love the selection of top quality and welldesigned bags and shoes. 236/7 Siam Square Soi 2. Open Mon-Sun 12:30-8:30pm. BTS Siam. www.fb.com/HOFstore

“Matchbox is the freshest. While m o st sto res j u st st ic k to t h e mainstream, Matchbox doesn't. The items are varied, and not too girly. It's a great place to perfect your office-to-rock concert outfit. Walking into multi-label stores and seeing all these brands in the one place can make you lose your mind, in a good way. But I still like those online free shipping deals. ” Theerada Moonsiri, 21, writer for Soimilk

Bloc Run by two rappers, Twopee Southside and Pok Mindset, Bloc is a rarity in this town: a street fashion shop that treats men’s and women’s wear equally. The ladies’ selection is all about sexy, outgoing and party-loving styles, with pieces from Irada, Pink by Pink, Vacayneeded swimwear, Thanda bras, Isawan leather bags and Haus of Jewelry jewelry.

brand owners tell us their favorite selling platforms

Good for: If you’ve got it, flaunt it. This sexy streetwear is suited to those who love being the life of the party. Siam Square Soi 1, 02-685-4845. Open daily noon-9pm. BTS Siam. www.instagram.com/theblocshop

This multi-label shop gathers around 40 brands from Facebook and Instagram, mixing dresses and workwear with street jeans and tees, leather sandals and bags. You’ll spot some overlap with other stores in the form of brands like Basics By Sita and Tinacha, but there are also plenty of exclusives like Tallulah and Ka Lin Official bags, Life Project BKK streetwear, Every Day with Lily eyewear and Mena accessories, with new brands arriving regularly.

“We sell mostly online right now t h ro u g h o u r ow n s i te [ w w w. seekerxretriever.com] but we've just partnered with a couple of bigger online players in Australia like Shop Kinobi [www.shopkinobi.com] and W e l l M a d e C l o t h e s [ w w w. wellmadeclothes.com]. I wouldn't say we make much from Instagram from Thai people but we're looking to stock at some local multi-stores in the future. We're less and less into pop-up markets, because they are so overcrowded and our pricing is relatively high.”

Good for: The selection here really is a wide mix, so you can be sure to put together a style of your own.

The Wonder Room Siam Center has long been a big supporter of Thai designers, established and emerging. The third floor is home to three multi-label stores under three different themes: Gin & Milk for gents, The Selected for design, and The Wonder Room for ladies. The store stocks Thai designer-label women’s accessories and clothing from eight of the city’s hottest designers. Every four months, the shop changes its decorative theme and rotates the brands featured. Good for: Currently you can expect to find hot accessories from Virgin Daisies vintage swimwear and Isawan leather bags to Estro cosmetics. 3/F, Siam Center, Rama 1 Rd., 02-658-1098. BTS Siam. www.fb.com/ thewonderroomstore

“Despite the fact that I have joined a lot of multi-label shops [2/7 Twice A Week and #Live Like Hound], online still works best. My customers know my brand from online [www. fb.com/aPalepetal]; they only need the shop when they want to check the real product before making a decision. Most customers who have found me through offline shops are either tourists or a fan of that particular shop.” Chavika Srisuan, 26, founder and designer at A.Palepetal

This online-only shopping website comes out with new items every week in both its Studio and Soho lines. Browse through lookbooks for fashion styling inspiration, as well as Alita, their exclusive sportswear brand for some much needed workout motivation. Note: Sales are accessible only to members.

The huge fashion retailer offers a range of high street international designers and local brands, like Superdry, New Look, Aldo, Michael Kors and Asawa. They even have an "outlet" section, their own label and a fashion blog. There’s also menswear and kids’ apparel.

Another go-to fashion spot that provides apparel, accessories and footwear alongside beauty essentials and skincare. The massive brand list includes leading inter labels and local boutiques.

This website is pretty different from the rest. Shop Shot doesn’t have its own product line, but rather acts as an online marketplace for many of the country’s hottest Instagram stores. Another feature is its lifestyle content which covers new brands, product picks of the month and trend pieces that are actually reliable.

Good for: Minimal street style with fun pieces to spice up an outfit. Also perfect for chic office and casual attire that doesn’t look like you’re trying too hard.

Good for: Creating your own style and finding new items without the hassle of sorting through racks of clothing at department stores. www.zalora.co.th

Good for: Unique and colorful pieces to add to your wardrobe from brands like Coach, Esprit, Adidas and Laura Mercier. Expect both formal and casual wear, as well as funky statement items to add to your outfits.

Good for: Really getting to know w h a t b ra n d s yo u s h o u l d b e following.

“Papers [www.fb.com/papers. official] relies on online platforms a lot more than multi-label stores and personally I like it that way. It means we can offer products at cheaper prices since there are no store costs. But it’s also a balancing act: some of my repeat customers have stopped purchasing online since finding my products in stores.” Busaya Mansap, 26, founder and designer at Papers

CHIANG MAI

Burmese Lanna The owner of Lanna Palace 2004 hotel, Narong Sarachon, has opened a new boutique stay inspired by the red wood buildings of Myanmar, The Chaya (053-245-995, www. fb.com/the.chaya.resort). The two-story building comprises three room types: Deluxe (from B3,920), Executive Suite (B5,920) and Chaya Pool Access (B7,290). Guests can prepare to be spoiled, too. All rooms include free minibars—aside from soft drinks and juices, Executive rooms come with six free beers, while the Chaya Pool Access has free SangSom. Guests can take the all-day breakfast whenever they want and between 6am-10pm they can order free tea and coffee from the in-house Perfect Blend cafe, which uses beans from Chiang Mai’s Doi Wawee. The hotel is located near Wat Suan Dok on Suthep Road, with the hip Nimmanhaemin neighborhood just a few minutes away. A free shuttle bus can also whisk you away to the Old Town or night markets.

SAMUI

Harder Stronger Hard Rock has opened its first new Thai branch in 15 years: Hard Rock Cafe Koh Samui (077-901-208, goo.gl/BqOV6A). Located amid the busy nightlife of Chaweng Beach, the new opening is exactly what you’d expect from the seasoned, rock ’n’ roll-themed chain. Indoors keeps things classic with long Chesterfield sofas and walls adorned with artworks and memorabilia featuring Taylor Swift, Madonna, The Beatles, Slash, Santana and Pearl Jam. There’s an outdoor terrace complete with pool and a stage for live music. Food and drinks cover the usual American smokehouse fare, from hamburgers to slowcooked ribs along with classic cocktails.

MALAYSIA

Kuala Luxe St. Regis Kuala Lumpur (goo. gl/173HKb) is the Malaysian capital’s latest luxe hotel opening, and follows hot on the heels of the brand’s expansion into Langkawi. Supposedly taking its cues from Manhattan high-rises, the hotels offers 208 elegant rooms and suites (from 62 sq meters to 137 sq meters)—all with walk-in wardrobes. Big-spenders can live it up in the 371-sq-meter Royal Suite, which is accessed by a private elevator and comes with an en-suite massage room and gym. But for now only the Deluxe rooms available—opening rates start from RM1,084 (B9,543). But the highlight might be the six in-house restaurants and bars including Taka by Sushi Saito, the first restaurant to open outside Tokyo by three Michelin-starred chef Takashi Saito, and Ginza Tenkuni, a branch of a 131-year-old Japanese restaurant that serves Edo-style tempura. The hotel is handily located right next to Kuala Lumpur Sentral train station, within spitting distance of attractions like the National Monument, Sri Kondaswamy Kovil Hindu Temple and Little India.

Yet Another Hound Launched in 1980, streetwear brand Greyhound seemingly never goes out of style. Since expanding with Greyhound Cafe, Another Hound Cafe and Everythinghound lifestyle store, it’s fair to say the brand goes well beyond fashion. Now the flagship store at Siam Paragon has been given a new concept, adding selected products from Thai designers to the selection of in-house fashion lines. #Live Like Hound is designed like a homey apartment: find the Greyhound collection displayed as a walk-in closet in the bedroom, ceramics from Cone No. 9 in the kitchen, and Erb beauty products in the bathroom. On top of more fashion from Playhound and Smiliehound, you’ll spot special collection like Vintage Remixed, which mixes together rare vintage tees to create new and trendy ones, as well as further Thai designer brands like Isawan, Carletta, Pana Object and A.Palepetal. 1/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd., 02-610-7894. Run by vinyl collector Thanakorn “M” Teechapoonpanya, the shop’s specialty is its unique selection of Thai string and luk krung (central Thai orchestral pop) music from the ‘70s-‘80s on vinyl as well as cassette. Highlights from our digging include releases from luk krung queen and National Artist Mantana Morakul, legendary luk krung band Sunthraporn, founder of GMM Grammy Rewat Buddhinan and luk thoong-string act Don Sornrabiab. The international selection is no less classic—expect ABBA, Elton John and Bennie Green among more esoteric finds. 524-526 Luang Rd., 086-618-6798. Open daily 9am-8pm. on.fb.me/1n17MJ8

5. NONGBON PARK

Phra Pradaeng, Samut Prakarn Just across the river from the city you’ll find a part of Bangkok sans big buildings, mass traffic and giant crowds. Although the “green lungs” of Bangkok can also be explored alone, those who are looking to meet new people, get a bit of exercise and maybe even an educational day out should join the Spice Roads half-day bike tour that runs twice a day, every day. The tour rides through the area’s local temples, schools and markets, all while getting a good amount of exercise. B1,350 includes bike and helmet rental and a professional tour guide. Register at www.spiceroads.com Health Tip: The importance of protecting your skin goes without saying. To be more specific, doctors at Bumrungrad recommend covering up exposed skin by using sunscreen with at least 30 SPF, as well as utilizing clothing such as long sleeved shirts, long pants, wide-brimmed hats, and a pair of sunglasses.

Chalerm Prakiat Rd., near Paradise Park The biggest green space in all of Bangkok is home to sprawling gardens and a large lake, as well as the futuristiclooking Ratchamangkhala Pavilion. For those who like exercise that’s easy on the joints but still promises to get the heart rate up, why not join the daily aerobics group that takes place every morning at 6:30-7:30am and evenings at 7:30-6:30pm. The loud, upbeat music and community feel is sure to get you in the swing of things. Health Tip: Doctors at Bumrungrad recommend taking part in 30 or more minutes of exercise at least three times a week to maintain health. Low impact exercises can be a great way to burn excess calories and boost metabolism, and are among the best exercises for controlling weight and preventing injury. Research also shows that exercising with music and a group of friends can help boost energy levels and maximize results.

Chalermprakiat Soi 43, Chalermprakiat Rd. Craving a dose of water sports but don’t have time to leave Bangkok? Head over to this lake which is something of a hidden gem in the city, boasting peaceful views and an escape from the urban life. Here, members can try windsurfing, sailing, kayaking and rowing—all for only B40 a year. Health Tip: Weight-bearing exercises such as running, tennis, or weight lifting can help to improve bone health, which enhances overall balance and strength to help prevent future bone fracture or breakage. You can learn more by speaking to the sports medicine practitioners at Bumrungrad’s Orthopedic Center (bit.ly/1WB89dM).

3. SUAN ROD FAI (VACHIRABENJATAS PARK) Kampang Petch Rd., near Chatuchak Market Just north of the chaos of Chatuchak Market lies one of the most relaxing places in town. But this former golf course is also a great place for a sweaty workout. On top of a quality 3km track and cheap bicycle rentals, this area has some of the biggest varieties of group exercise options available as far as a park goes. Take your pick from the on-site tennis court, swimming pool, basketball court and football field for renting out with your friends and family. Rental prices are as cheap as B35/hour and some are completely free. Health Tip: You might know by now that exercise strengthens our bones, but diet is important, too. The nutrition experts at Bumrungrad recommend eating foods high in Vitamin D such as egg yolk, tuna, and mushrooms can help with the body’s ability to absorb calcium for healthy bones. Meanwhile, foods high in Vitamin K, such as broccoli, spinach and kale are great sources of protein which helps to keep bones healthy.

4. BENJAKITTI PARK Ratchadapisek Rd., right next to Queen Sirikit Convention Center (direct access via MRT) While this centrally-located park is a great place for some casual exercise in the fresh air, there’s also something for those looking for a more intense workout. At The Aspire Club, outdoor group workout sessions are run in a fun, social setting and involve everything from kettlebells, core strength training, climbing ropes to even mixed martial arts. The bootcamps promise that women can expect to burn 600+ calories and men 800-1200 calories in their one-hour sessions. Memberships are B600/class or B5,000/month including a free trial. For details of the class schedule, visit www.aspiresgt.com. Health Tip: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day, particularly if engaging in sports in the Bangkok heat, is crucial for staying hydrated. This helps to keep the body’s electrolytes in balance while reducing the risk of heatstroke. Cold water, mildly acidic juices and fresh coconut juice are particularly good options.

6. LUMPHINI PARK Rama 4 Rd., across the road from Silom Rd. and Dusit Thani hotel While this inner-city haven of greenery is no secret, there’s more to working out here than the mass dance aerobics groups. For an alternative running activity, this park often welcomes the “Run Together” group, where runners are attached to disabled members, ranging from blind people to people in wheelchairs, as “guides” while they run together. The group meets every last Saturday of the month for a morning of exercise—for details of the next meet up, visit bit.ly/1TDZSi8. Health Tip: Get regular health checkups whether or not you are an experienced runner, since performing in endurance sports for an extended period of time can change the muscles in your heart and lead to a higher risk of various heart diseases. Bumrungrad Hospital offers many different checkup packages designed to fit your unique needs, and you can explore these options at the Health Checkup Center (bit.ly/22ev9yz).

Bumrungrad Hospital is one of the largest private medical facilities in Southeast Asia, with over 55 specialty centers, an internationally-certified lab and pharmacy, clinical research centers, advanced imaging facilities, and a 24-hour emergency care unit. Certified by the Joint Commission International since 2002, Bumrungrad cares for more than 1.1 million patients a year at its state-of-the-art facilities right in the heart of Bangkok. CAFE

Early Bird Rangnam’s favorite cafe has branched out to Silom. Serving all the favorites from the original venue, the spacious new Chibi Chibi welcomes the office crowds for breakfast and lunch, starting from as early as 7am. The owner, a self-taught chef, whips up her own versions of breakfast staples like the open sandwich with egg mix, avocado and shrimp roe (B175), ciabatta with egg, bacon and cheese (B155) and Thai-style khao tom (boiled rice with pork or chicken, B115). The carbonara (B245) features housemade fettuccine with parmesan flakes, while the signature French toast (B195) comes topped with a bunch of colorful fruits. To drink, try coffee from local roaster PNF (from B70), house-blended tea from Mali Ateli (B100) or unique soda drinks like Lady Versailles (rose, rambutan, soda, B90). 339 Silom Soi 3 (Pipat), 088-399-9699. www.fb.com/chibichibicafe

This far-flung cafe on Ramintra does all of Bangkok’s trending desserts. Taking its inspiration from Japan, Apbo Cafe’s treats highlight the use of fruit and veggies, as in the kakigori shaved ice which comes with a unique topping that’s made from imported Japanese purple sweet potatoes (B175). Other hot picks include the monstrous banana choco freakshake (piled high with brownie, orange, strawberry, cotton candy and almond, B145), souffle pancakes (B195) and the huge strawberry cotton candy tree (served with cheesecake, ice cream and berries, B155). This Jun 2-4, chef Jean-Michel Lorain (of two-Michelin-starred La Côte Saint Jacques) returns to his Bangkok venue, J’aime by Jean-Michel Lorain, to whip up special dinners. Over three nights, he presents an eight-course, farm-to-table set menu, using organic produce from the Royal Project Foundation. You can expect dishes like clam fish soup with garlic and saffron emulsion; a medley of frog legs and veal sweetbread, red cabbage gazpacho and eggplant chutney; and roasted pigeon breast served with polenta, green asparagus and tonka flavor. The dinner is priced at B4,499 net per person. 2/F, U Sathorn Bangkok, 105 Soi Ngam Duphli, Sathorn Rd., 02-119-4899. www.fb.com/ jmlbangkok

If you haven’t had a chance to taste the delicious Mexican-Korean fusion on offer at Changwon Express, here’s a mighty good excuse. This craft beer-centric bar just installed six more beers on tap—and they’re all Thai. The list is considerably different from what’s available at Let the Boy Die, which means you now have a second place to drink your fill of locally brewed beers on the regular. Currently on tap are Sandport’s Too Much Coffee porter and Roselle Red ale, Outlaw’s Belgian Blondie ale, and Happy New Beer’s Hardcore IPA and Thai Wit. Prices start from B180. Another two taps still pour imported selections. Be sure to grab a kimchi taco (B200) to go with. 37 Asoke Din Daeng Rd., 092-251-8661. Open Mon-Sat 5pm-midnight. Riedel Wine Bar & Lounge

Water Library’s gastro bar at this breezy, partly open-air mall is inspired by a 19th-century steam power plant. The kitchen is all about comforting dishes, ranging from a classic burger to tiger prawn pasta, but its cocktails (from B250) are no afterthought. The solid drinks list ticks all the right boxes (classics, barrel-aged, etc.), as does the handsome industrial decor that combines leather, brassed metal and the obligatory bare bulbs. Groove@CentralWorld, Rama 1 Rd., 061-8257348, 095-072-7777. Open daily 11am-midnight. BTS Siam/Chit Lom

The Bangkok branch of the Sydney-based restaurant does away with Mexican food’s usual format of big portions and low-key vibe. Instead, Mejico aims to give its food a more exciting edge by incorporating modern twists like guacamole made table-side and served with banana chips. On top of the food, there are also over 190 tequila labels behind the bar, which get poured into some delicious cocktails like the signature margarita (B250), which mixes El Jimador blanco tequila, mango, coconut and pandan into a sort of pina colada-margarita hybrid—as delicious as it sounds.

The Beer Bridge

Riedel, Austrian maker of some of the world’s finest crystal wine glasses, has licensed its name to this wine bar equipped with a state-of-the-art wine dispenser which allows for up to 40 open bottles to be stored without oxidizing. The result is a huge list of wines to try by the glass, ranging in price from just B60 up to B640. The space oozes quality, from the gorgeously smooth, open-pore wooden tables to the wall of cool, brushed-steel wine dispensers, but we recommend heading out to the open balcony—one of the best alfresco dining spots in the area—and ordering up some of the Med-inflenced tapas.

The owner of cutesy bistro Line-Up at The Portico community mall has teamed up with Chef Chalee Kader of Surface to transform it into The Beer Bridge. Reminiscent of a spacious beer cellar, the venue puts the focus on craft beer and booze-friendly bites, with simple yet thoughtful tapas dishes and comfort food. The highlight, though, is the stellar list of over 100 beers from all over the world, including American Deschutes Inversion IPA (B260) and the stronger, slightly bitter Belgian St Bernardus Abt 12 (B290). 1/F, Portico, 31 Soi Lang Suan, 02-652-1979. Open daily 8am-midnight. BTS Chit Lom

Hyde & Seek Peek-a-Boo Inspired by tree houses, this bar-restaurant hybrid offers a sophisticated trip down memory lane. A local former champion of the Diageo Reserve World Class Thailand Competition designed the drinks list, and it shows. The menu is tight and original, from the fruity BKK Cobbler (B295) to the old-fashioned-style Whiskey Rebellion (B325). Be sure to order the tasty bar snacks like wagyu beef and stilton Scotch eggs to go with your drinks. 1/F, Groove, CentralWorld, Rama 1 Rd., 02-646-1099. Open daily 11-12:30am. BTS Siam/Chit Lom

Roof 409 Bar & Bistro

This rooftop cocktail lounge takes you back to the jazz age. The two-story space sports prohibition era-inspired decor, featuring lots of dark woods and Art Deco touches. A balcony on the 24th floor lets you take in 180-degree views of Bangkok’s business district, while an alfresco rooftop offers a more leisurely atmosphere. Try classic cocktails that really pack a punch, like the Brandy Crusta (B330), which combines Hennessy VSOP, orange curacao and bitters.

This rooftop bistro and bar offers a happening vibe thanks to clean black-and-white industrial decor (think New York subway tiles and metal cafe chairs), a DJ booth that pumps out house tunes and a loungey area overlooking Phloen Chit. The fourth floor views can’t compete with the most famous rooftop bar on top of hotels, but you do get a suitably urban vibe due its very central location. Overall it’s a laidback and highly affordable option (cocktails from B210) with a menu of fuss-free comfort food such as risottos, pastas or fish and chips.

Octagon This rooftop bar sits modestly on the fourth floor of The Mercury Ville community mall. It’s decked out in the requisite fake grass and rattan benches, conjuring a laidback garden vibe, while an octagon-shaped open bar sits at the venue’s center. The food is international fusion, including beer-friendly choices like deepfried seafood, spaghetti garlic and dried chili and barbecue sausage. Asahi is available on tap (B798 for a 3-liter tower) and they claim to serve it extra cold at -2 degree Celsius. The 360-degree urban views of Chit Lom aren’t bad, either. 4/F, Mercury Ville, 504 Phloen Chit Rd., 088842-4044. Open daily 5:30pm-midnight. BTS Chit Lom

Tales of Gold Mine Dressed up under a California gold-rush theme, this bar/restaurant serves Western-Chinese fusion food with plenty of twists. The Wonton Nachos, for example, use fried wontons instead of tortilla chips, while the quinoa is mixed with Chinese barbecue pork. The drinks are also gold (label) inspired, including the likes of the Chinese Flik (Gold Label infused Chinese herbs, B320). They’ve also just launched as a live rock venue, which they’re calling Kicks.

OPEN DOOR

Sorrento A familiar name for Italian food gets a modern makeover in Sathorn. The buzz: Dating back to the ‘80s, Sorrento is one of the city's oldest names for Italian food, formerly located at the spot that is now Tenyuu Grand. Just before it closed down, Diageo World Class 2015 winner Pongpak "Ton" Sudthipongse and partners decided to continue its legacy by opening a new place with the same name. Here, the focus is as much on drinks as it is on home-style Italian dishes. The decor: Distinguishing it from the surrounding shop-houses, Sorrento occupies a white standalone building which has space out front for outdoor tables. Inside is a sleek take on a traditional trattoria with brick walls and a library-themed private room. A garden at the center of the house adds a touch of greenery. The food: The kitchen is helmed by the original Sorrento team who serve old favorites alongside some new dishes that make use of

20

modern sous-vide and compression techniques. But the focus really is on traditional cooking. Classics include the Pizza Sorrento (B490), two layers of crispy crust sandwiching ham, rocket, tomato and mascarpone cheese, and the herb-stuffed, grilled lamb rack (B690) with ratatouille and spinach. The roasted snowfish (B690) with chorizo and bell pepper relish is another throwback selection. One highlight is the pasta cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper, B360-460), made in a large Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese wheel with flamed cognac to melt the cheese. Do also try the fresh tiramisu (B165).

The Don (Chivas Regal Extra, port wine, cherry syrup and black walnut bitters served in a rosemary-smoked rock glass, B320) going well with food. We recommend the twist on the classic Italian cocktail sgroppino (lemon sorbet, gin, sparkling wine and basil, B320). You’ll also find classics like Sazerac (B390) and the unusual Corpse Reviver No. 2 (gin, yuzu-infused sake, vermouth bianco, Cointreau, lemon juice and absinthe, B320).

The drinks: Expectations are high given Ton's experience behind the bar. Cocktails follow a similar philosophy to the food, mixing classic recipes with modern techniques (they even sous-vide the gin). The results are light and refreshing, with even spirit-forward choices like

Natcha Sanguankiattichai and Vasachol Quadri

Why you should care: Sorrento adds some old-school charm to the Sathorn 10-12 neighborhood which is lined with fun, young places. 73 Sathorn Soi 10, 02-234-9933. Open Sun-Thu 11am-11pm; Fri-Sat 11am-midnight. www.fb.com/sorrentosathorn

ART EXHIBITIONS

ART HIGHLIGHT

Bangkok may be home to more art galleries and cool exhibitions than ever before, but not too many really push into controversial territory. That’s what makes the current exhibition at The Reading Room, dubbed Paradise for the Blind, that much more interesting. Running through May 29, the exhibition presents a collection of artworks made from shredded (and whole) censored books that artist Sutthirat Supaparinya (see our interview, page 4) has gathered and studied. All the books used have either been censored or banned in various countries around Asia, including Chit Phumisak’s The Real Face of Thai Feudalism, Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s All That Is Gone and Noam Chomsky’s Year 501: The Conquest Continues. The project is the first installment of The Reading Room’s “Sleepover” art project, which has invited six artists to take over the space of the library with cultural projects. The next installment, taking place throughout the month of June, will welcome Southeast of Now, a group of Southeast Asian art historians who have launched a journal discussing the directions of contemporary and modern art. Through May 29. The Reading Room, 2 Silom Soi 19, 02-635-3674. BTS Surasak
