What We’ve Learned
Ari’s happening. Still. A new Korean restaurant and a place specializing in some seriously good coffee are this week’s news from the hippest hood north of Siam (see page 21). There’s also a cool new Izakaya called Moo Bar, but we haven’t quite got to that one yet. Phra Athit’s Escapade follow-up finally open Everything has changed for the Escapade duo. Their burger joint is still in business, but all those spirit bottles have relocated to their new venture right across the street. Rarb takes things to hardcore levels—huge bar, booze rack stacked to the rafters, limited-edition bottles and custom drinks. It’s also inspired by old-school larb joints, meaning Chef Van will serve everything you’d expect from an Isaan place only with the quality of ingredients he’s known for. There’s finally a reason to visit Naiipa The first business is now open in Phra Khanong’s stunning art and design complex. Pencave is a co-working space where you can get your start-up off the ground while chilling in a hammock the size of a double bed. See page 14. Ice cream that looks just like durian is a thing If you’ve never eaten the crazy ice-cream concoctions of Icedea in BACC then you’re missing out. Make sure you go there this weekend to check out their latest invention: durian ice cream that literally looks like a chunk of durian complete with an edible shell and seeds. Yum! For all the durian season dessert news see goo.gl/Pn70uC. Now’s the time to go on holiday—even with the rain Bangkok Airways has lined up some seriously sweet travel deals to keep us filling out their seats even in the rainy season. B8,500 for two nights with flights at Cape Panwa sounds alright to us. See page 12 Bangkok has hit peak Negroni Last week was fun. Hopping from bar to happening bar ordering little rocks glasses of orange sugary syrup, all for a very good cause. But now Negroni Week is over and the hangover has sunken in. If we read one more article about a mixologist’s playful twists to the classic cocktail, we’re switching back to craft beer.

upfront HOT OR NOT
Hot: Folding bikes
Not: Full-frame bikes
The Skytrain has banned your bike from coming on board. Kind of. Unless it’s one of those folding ones, you’re only allowed to travel between 6am and— wait for it—6:30am. And since you won’t be allowed back on till after 10pm, we guess you’ll be cycling back from wherever it is you went. Weekends still allow all bikes all day.
INTERVIEW
Hot: Thai restaurants
Not: Thai universities
London education consultancy Quacquarelli Symonds released its list of Asia’s 350 best universities last week. Nowhere in Thailand makes an appearance until Chula at no. 45, by which time Japan is already in double figures. To mask the bitter taste of educational defeat, go eat at one of our top restaurants, which did slightly better in this year’s World’s 50 Best (see page 22). No prizes for guessing who passed the grade.
Hot: Hotels
Not: Tourists
Now that all the tourists are staying with Airbnb hosts (see page 6), it’s our turn to head back to Bangkok’s hotels. This weekend there’s the third edition of Hotel Art Fair at Ad Lib (see page 27), while the roof of Hotel Indigo on Wireless Road has been turned into a rooftop bar worth visiting (see page 18).
Hot: Theater
Not: Movies
Movies are always crap in Bangkok and this week’s no exception (see page 28). But there are a whole seven plays opening in Bangkok this week, which is the most we’ve seen in BK since, well, ever. Culture vultures should swing by Democrazy Theatre Studio for a conceptual look at urban life in Plan B’s The Disappearance of The Boy on a Sunday Afternoon, while the rest of us can go watch a man dressed in a green fat suit at Shrek (see page 28).
THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

Silom Road’s infamous night market might be the latest to bite the dust as part of City Hall’s ongoing cleanliness and order campaign. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is hardening up its stance against vendors taking up the sidewalk of one of the city’s busiest tourist streets, with the chairman of the advisor to the Governor of Bangkok, Vallop Suwandee, calling for all Silom vendors to clear out by Aug 1 (a deadline extended from Jun 1). The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) says it’s offering 10,000 stalls to vendors in the Bangrak area for them to relocate. But those working in the area say that’s not going to help vendors whose businesses are designed to sell to tourists. Here, we speak to “Orr” (real name withheld), 30, who has been selling carved soaps in the area for six years, about what the move will mean to her business. What’s the situation like for you right now? This is the worst year ever for business, and I think it’s the same for stalls inside Soi Patpong. I’ve been here for 5-6 years, and it has never been as quiet as it has for the past two months. I barely sell any products.
BMA. There’s also a B500 monthly fee to pay the municipal police. Also my target customers are foreigners. I sell flower-shaped carved soaps from Sam Peng, they’re souvenirs. It would be hard to sell this type of merchandise elsewhere.
What has your income been like in the past? I used to sell clothes at Platinum but I moved here 2-3 years ago. At that time, I made B4,000-5,000 per day, but I’d be happy even at B2,0003,000. These days I can’t even hit B1,000 per day.
So what’s your plan B? There is no plan B. Already I can’t sell my products and I don’t know what to do next. To tell you the truth, even people with bachelor’s degrees still find it super-hard to get jobs right now. For me it’s even harder because making soaps and selling them is the only thing I know.
How will the BMA’s relocation of vendors from Silom Road affect you? It would be impossible for me to move into Soi Patpong. Rent there is around B12,000/month for a meterlong space, while here it’s B3,0005,000 depending on the “land owners”—and that’s not going to the
How have the changes to selling hours affected you? During the yellow shirt and red shirt mobs, we were allowed to set up our stalls at 3-4pm but foreigners were scared of the political situation. That’s understandable. I mean who would come and buy souvenirs at that time? About two years ago, the hour
changed to 7pm and now it’s 9pm. We’re basically night workers now. Do you sympathize with people who consider vendors on the sidewalk to be a problem? I admit that the sellers’ motorcycles on the road can be a problem for commuters but I don’t see how it affects office workers since we set up so late. Thai people have already left the area by then. Do you think you will get financial support from Bangkok officials? I have little faith that Bangkok officials will lend any financial support. Most of us are from the countryside in Isaan. They once even told us that we are not Bangkokians, and that we should go back home because people should only earn a living and reap profits from the area they are from. Room to Let Bangkok’s Airbnb hosts reveal the ups and downs of running their businesses. By Bonnie Sananvatananont.

ast year, Bangkok’s Banglamphu district ranked as the second highest-growing area in the world for the number of Airbnb rentals available. Here, we speak to Airbnb users across Bangkok, from the person with a spare room to rent to the young entrepreneur starting their own hostel, to find out what it takes to be a successful host—and if the rewards are worth the effort. Is this your only Airbnb property? Yes, but each of the rooms here is filed under its own listing online. So actually it looks like I have six properties. Therefore, there’s more likelihood that people will find at least one of my listings and make a booking. So is it profitable? Yes, but not by a huge amount. I make about B20,000 profit a month. I’m already in the process of expanding to have more rooms in order to cover costs, even though I’ve already pushed the prices up once.
ANANDA “JOY” CHALARDCHAROEN Address: The Mustang Nero, Soi Sukhumvit Plus 1 (opposite Sukhumvit Soi 71 [Pridi Bhanomyong]) Neighborhood: Phra Khanong Been doing this for: 1 year Space is: Rented www.airbnb.com/users/show/30963587
What makes a good Airbnb host? You need to have time and passion. It requires you to be on standby a lot, replying promptly, going out of your way to take care of guests’ needs. It can be tiresome.
Joy represents the growing number of people using Airbnb to run their own hotels and hostels. Rather than rent a single apartment, Joy has created an entire hostel business which she manages exclusively through Airbnb. Her six rooms rent for around B2,000-2,500/night, with each one decorated in a unique, eclectic style involving stuffed animals, desert artifacts and fake cactus plants. How did you start out as an Airbnb host? I actually wanted to open a hostel, but then I needed a platform to advertise it and manage bookings. Now, half of my guests come directly from searching through Airbnb, and the other half comes from my Facebook page, Instagram and word of mouth. But at the end of the day, the only way you can make a booking is with Airbnb. Why use Airbnb and not let them book directly? It helps with problems like last-minute cancellations. With Airbnb, hosts still receive payment even if guests decide to cancel or simply just don’t show up. Also, this means I don’t need to have my own system for payment and bookings—I simply receive a notification from Airbnb when someone has booked. It definitely involves less management than doing it on my own.

cover story Was it difficult getting started? No. I got a booking 30 minutes after posting the listing online. I think the decoration is what did it. The first thing people look at is the photos, and if they see a nice place they want to stay in, they’ll book it despite the lack of reviews. How did you determine what price to set? Actually, Airbnb gives you guide of prices for the area around you. You can see how other people have priced themselves and work from there. Of course, you need to keep in mind the extra charges including things like cleaning service— and the fact that Airbnb cuts off three percent.
NARATHIP “NICK” PRAMUALSUK Address: 8/74 Noble Re:D Ari Soi 1 Neighborhood: Ari Been doing this for: 3 months Space is: Bought www.airbnb.com/users/show/41482720 Nick’s Airbnb space sits in your typical modern Bangkok condo development—a spacious, tworoom unit with a built-in kitchen. He’s gone for a beach house theme with the decor, which features cool blues, light rustic woods and framed images of beach escapes like Santorini. He rents out the entire space for a maximum of four people for around B2,000 per night. Why did you start using Airbnb? I bought this condo with my wife, and we both spend time going back and forth between here and America. Since we only use it half the time, I decided to rent it out using Airbnb. But now that it has generated more business, whenever I’m back in Bangkok I end up having to stay at my parent’s place since guests are always here! What do you like about Airbnb over renting the space like a traditional landlord? You can determine when you want or don’t want guests to be there—if I need this space, I can make it unavailable to rent. Airbnb allows for short-term stays, almost like a hotel, rather than long-term house rentals in the traditional sense.
Have you ever had any problems with Airbnb? I had some problems with payment not coming through and I couldn’t get in touch with anyone at the Airbnb Thailand office. What I’ve learnt, though, is that Twitter is the best way for hosts to get assistance. The official Airbnb Twitter account replies almost instantly—so don’t waste your time with the Thai office. I think they’re too new and not properly set up for providing host support yet.
Why did you start using Airbnb? This was originally my office and home, but I had a lot of unused space which I then decided to rent out. Because I live here too, I figured it would be a good way to make new friends from around the world.
Have you had any legal issues? I haven’t told the condo that I’m renting out the space, but I think there aren’t any strict laws in this case. Technically, they could just be friends of mine staying over. It’s easier, though, because I’ve bought this space. It might be a different story for those who are renting a condo and subletting on Airbnb—for this, they might need to check the legality of it.
WIRANPAT “HONG” NARANITTITUM Address: Wie Immer Bangkok, Thonglor Soi 14 Neighborhood: Thonglor Been doing this for: 6 months Space is: Bought www.airbnb.com/users/show/44809802 This whitewashed, minimal building sits in a Thonglor townhouse, and comes as a homestay, cafe and art gallery all in one space. Roomy and filled with plenty of natural light, the four rooms spread across the top floor each feature a cozy lounge area beneath the bed which lies in a top bunk. Hong rents out each double bedroom for around B900-1,300 per night.
8
What is key to making a successful Airbnb? Location, homeliness and service are all important. But for me I want to focus on making it an experience for the guests. They can enjoy the cafe and art gallery downstairs, they can hang out with me, they can take my advice on where to go and what to do. This way, it’s more personalized and interactive than a hotel room. Was it difficult starting out? Yes, because I didn’t have any reviews. At that point, the key thing to have is really good pictures of your place. Airbnb has a free photography service for people like me who aren’t good at taking photos. Once you get good photos, you’ll get your first guest and once the reviews come in, it will all be a lot easier. Is it profitable? It definitely can be but it depends on how much time and effort you want to put into it. For me, I didn’t go into it with huge expectations, but now that I’ve got the ball rolling it’s a great side business. But I know lots of people who dedicate their time entirely to this, and it has been very rewarding for them.

cover story Why go through Airbnb and not manage bookings yourself? The review system helps. Not only can guests review hosts but also vice versa. This way, I can actually screen guests before they come—see if they’ve had any bad experiences with other hosts. I can even ask them for passport verification for safety measures, which puts me at ease because this is my home, not a hotel.
SUDAPORN “PUPE” SAE IA Address: El Chiringuito Chinatown, 221 Soi Nana, Chareonkrung Rd. Neighborhood: Chinatown Been doing this for: 6 months Space is: Rented www.airbnb.com/users/show/3315162 Pupe has renovated an old building in Chinatown into a minimal, yet colorful guesthouse which stays in keeping with the tone of the area thanks to Chinese-style decoration and antiques. The downstairs area doubles as a bar serving drinks and Spanish food that opens out onto the streets, while the rooms upstairs take up the entire floor and ensure privacy. Each of the four rooms rents for B742-1,518 per night.
Have you ever had any bad experiences with guests? A lot of guests expect it to be a hotel and treat it that way. For instance, I had a group that came in and intentionally left the aircon on while they left the house for the day. They might be used to hotels where the power cuts automatically or you don’t get charged for wasting the electricity. But I’ve come to learn that it’s part of the costs that I need to deal with. Same goes for breakage, mess and other damages. What kind of person makes a good host? You need to be service-minded and a quickproblem solver. You never know what guests might need help with and a lot of things are unexpected. It’s a learning curve.
How did you get started with Airbnb? I originally rented this place to make a bar while I lived upstairs. But I often had friends coming to stay so I decided to rent another building. The more I decorated and the more I expanded, I started to charge our friends a small fee until it sort of just evolved into a series of guest houses, which I then decided needed to be properly listed on a place like Airbnb.
How did you get started? I wasn’t sure how it all worked so I went to a meetup [airbnb.com/meetups] dedicated to experienced hosts telling new hosts about their successes. It was extremely helpful and after that I just wanted to give it a go. I still go to those meetups because it’s great to get support and help from other hosts.
SIRIRAT “YOOM” THAWILVEJAKUL Address: Noble Solo, Sukhumvit Soi 55 Neighborhood: Thonglor Been doing this for: 6 months Space is: Bought www.airbnb.com/rooms/7543574 Yoom’s modern, spacious unit in a Thonglor condo has a playful feel. The walls are decorated with her own graphic and animation designs, plus a full-scale blackboard wall with chalk is provided for drawing and working on. The apartment sleeps a total of four over two rooms, and costs around B2,500-4,000 per night depending on how many guests stay. Why did you start using Airbnb? My mother originally bought me and my sisters this condo. However, we don’t use it all the time since we still prefer to live at home. We started thinking of what to do with it while we’re not here, and it led to Airbnb.
10
Has it been successful for you so far? It’s been good but I must admit it seems pretty seasonal. During April, I was pretty much fully booked. Now, because of the rainy season, fewer tourists are coming and it’s been noticeably less busy.
I’m sure you can do that if you have good planning and time, but personally I think it’s more suitable for people who have a second home they don’t permanently use or a spare empty condo. It’s a great way to make some side money while still maintaining a full-time job. Any specific tips you want to give to budding hosts? A lot of bookings are for three people, since it’s an inconvenient number for a hotel. I can imagine it’s the same for five or seven. So it’s great to target groups this size.
How did you determine the price for your property? Initially, I set a fixed price of about B4,300 per night based on the central location and the quality and newness of the condominium. However, since the place is listed for four people, I found that smaller groups didn’t want to come or would ask for discounts. So I now adjust the price depending on the number of people coming, which seems to have made a big difference. Have you made any mistakes with Airbnb that you wish you could redo? This space was originally two apartments, but I knocked down the wall to merge it into one more spacious area. Looking back, I should’ve kept it as two separate but smaller apartments so that there could be two listings. Having more than one listing would really help with reviews and visibility. Do you think it’s worth it for someone to buy or rent a condo for the sole purpose of Airbnb?

HUA HIN
Beach Bound AntiGravity Aerial Yoga is the New York-born yoga trend that sees people swinging from hammocks to get fit. Now, its founding studio has teamed up with V Villas Hua Hin (032616-039, www.v-villashuahin.com) to roll out a new health-centric stay at the luxurious all-villa resort. Every day of the three-day-two-night AntiGravity Package, you’ll get to spend 2-3 hours swinging from your hammock to achieve something called a “breezy calm soul” before retiring to your massive one-bedroom pool villa. It costs a hefty B47,500 per person on Jul 13-15, or B55,500 on Jul 29-31, but for that you do get a glass of organic juice thrown in, too.

Rustic Patong Patong’s new Rustic—Eatery & Bar (076-344-838, open daily 7am-11pm, goo.gl/HRiAs1) looks like it walked out of Thonglor and onto the beach. Craft beers, chopping boards as plates and Edison lightbulbs are the stock trade of this spot on Patong’s southern end, but so is good food. The kitchen is actually led by a Masterchef winner—albeit the Croatian version of the show. Nikola Lesar won the popular culinary challenge back in 2012, after which he moved to Thailand, trained at Le Cordon Bleu Bangkok’s Asian cuisine course and teamed up with pastry chef Mook Surajaroenjai. Together they make food that ranges from European-Asian creations like the herb-and-almond-crusted salmon with charred corn sauce (B450) to simple, comfort pleasures like porchetta (slow-roasted pork belly, B450) and churros (B400).
AIRLINES
Time to Pack Bangkok Airways’ (www.bangkokair.com) Bin Dee Yu Dee deal recurs every year and offers some of the cheapest flight-and-hotel packages you’ll ever find. The package wraps up flights to local destinations like Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Krabi, Phuket and Koh Samui with three-daytwo-night stays in 4-5 star hotels for as little as B5,900. Some of the deals we like include Phuket’s Cape Panwa for B8,500; Ananda Everingham’s Hotel Yayee in Chiang Mai for B6,500; and Akyra Minor Hotel in Chiang Mai for B8,900—a stay that would usually cost you at least B5,866 per night. They’ve also extended the deal to four international destinations: Maldives, Luang Prabang, Siem Reap and Mandalay (starting from B17,900 or B37,500 for the Maldives). Make your bookings through partner travel agencies at goo.gl/J44XXT. The packages are available from now until Nov 30.
UAE
Arab Luxe Four Seasons has finally opened its first hotel in the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi (www.fourseasons.com/abudhabi) sits on Al Maryah Island and offers 200 rooms and suites with views of the Persian Gulf. Heads of state will be making their reservations for the 267-sq-meter Royal Suite Suite, which features two-story-high windows, crystal chandeliers, hand-painted silk and a whole lot of marble. Room rates start from AED1,120 (B10,752) for the less-auspicious superior rooms. There’s more UAE news, too. Just two hours from Abu Dhabi, the one-yearold St. Regis Dubai (www.stregisdubai.com) has unveiled its new Bentley Suite. is pretty short, as they focus mainly on tokpokki, which is offered with seven different toppings and three different spice levels

avenue CO-WORKING SPACE
Work Cave Finally, an actual reason to visit Naiipa Art Complex. The hip community mall went awfully quiet after kicking off with the Wallpaper Art Exhibition back in October last year. Now one wing has opened as Pencave, a co-working space offering hot desks for walk-in customers and private group rooms that are more reminiscent of a university library than cafe. Individuals can choose from a spot in the main room, dubbed Penguin’s Ground (B320/day pass or B6,000/month), or in private rooms. There’s even a library and chill living room with a hammock-like bed for when you need a short break from work, too. 48 Sukhumvit Soi 46, 062-553-5345. Open daily 9am-10pm. BTS Phra Khanong

Youthful metrosexual streetwear brand Boyplain set up its first shop at Terminal 21 late last year, and now follows it up by introducing a second line. Every/Boy/Day by Boyplain goes for an even younger look with more casual items loaded with playful details. While the original line was all about print-onprint and experimental silhouettes (think oversized coats and trousers) that are not exactly for everyone, the latest pieces stick to easygoing shorts and tees with splashes of color. Tees start at B1,590 and pants from B1,790. Available at men’s fashion zone at 1/F, The Emporium and 5/F, Zen@CentralWorld. www.fb.com/everyboyday
The latest heels to arrive in Bangkok from Italy, Bruno Premi and Elvio Zanon, promise fashionable designs that you can actually walk in. We didn’t believe it, either, until we tried walking in their platform sandals for a whole day with no ill-effects. Of course, platforms aren’t as painful as pin heels, but our point still stands. The brands use genuine leather (ox and lamb skin) both on the exterior and interior to give comfortable support to your feet. The shoes are also quite light, with good designs that you will actually want to wear from office to party. The prices are a steal for genuine leather, too, starting from B3,000. Available at 2/F, Central Chitlom, 1027, Phloen Chit Rd., 02-793-7000. BTS Chit Lom
Bangkok’s newest escape game, Ticket to Mystery, challenges players to solve riddles, search for clues and plot their escape within 55 minutes. Right now there are two scenarios: prove your innocence as an angry mob converges on you thinking you’re Jack The Ripper in 1888 London, or fast-forward to 2035 to save the world from climate change. Prices start at B1,600 for two people, B2,300 for three, B2,900 for four and B3,400 for five. Single players are welcome but must pay the price of two (from B900 for two to B3,800 for 8, monthly plans are also available). 3/F, Gateway Ekkamai, 091-107-4065. Brekkie
Wakey Wakey Top spots to grab a healthy breakfast in Bangkok. 1. VEGANERIE CONCEPT 35/1 Soi Methi Niwes (behind Benjasiri Park), 02-2588489. BTS Phrom Phong. Open daily 10am-10pm. www.fb.com/VeganBakeryBangkok Although this place started as a small vegan dessert cafe, it has since expanded its menu to include a lot more than that, while still promoting a healthy, vegan lifestyle. Expect to find well-rounded low-calorie meals void of any meat, as well as plenty of gluten-free options, many of which are great for kickstarting the day. Particularly popular breakfast picks include the vegan deluxe yogurt bowl (B210) and the vegan American pancake (B250). We recommend: Vegan DIY waffles (B165), a set of vegan waffles served with a selection of topings. Avoid the chocolate maple syrup and go for the fresh kiwis, strawberries and bananas instead. Health tip: Having a diet rich in fruit reduces your risk of stroke and other cardiovascular diseases, type2 diabetes, as well as certain types of cancers. It is generally recommended for people to eat one to two and a half cups of fruit a day.
2. BREKKIE 6/9 Sukhumvit Soi 39, 083-656-6141 Open Tue-Fri 7am-4pm, Sat-Sun 9am-6pm. www.fb.com/brekkiebangkok Much like the name suggests, this cafe is a great breakfast destination, where all the dishes focus on healthy options. You can expect ingredients like quinoa, avocado, spirulina, flaxseed, acai berry and chia seed to dominate the menu, like in the acai smoothie bowl (B260) and the avocado toast (B240). We recommend: The wholewheat pancake topped with homemade ricotta cheese and coconut butterscotch (B200).
Health Tip: Choose wholegrain varieties or vegetable alternatives instead of starchy carbohydrates— wholewheat over white bread, potatoes with their skin on, and dried vegetable chips over normal chips are just some simple and tasty options.
3. ABSOLUTE FIT FOOD CAFE The Commons, Thonglor Soi 17, 091-872-0885. Open daily 9am-9pm. www.fb.com/AbsoluteFitFood. The food arm of the Absolute wellness empire (also known for their yoga and Pilates studios) focuses on clean eating with low-calorie recipes and guiltfree options. While the chain offers much more than breakfast dishes, their early morning meals are both healthy and delicious, ranging from quinoa pancakes to hearty omelets. Plus, all the dishes on the menu are listed with a calorie count. We recommend: Chia scrambled eggs with mini muffins (B280), made with free-range eggs mixed with chia seeds scrambled without any cream or butter. Health tip: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It replenishes the low blood sugar that we depleted while asleep, giving the boost of energy needed after many hours away from food and water. A nutritious breakfast also kick starts the metabolism, allowing for more calories to be burnt throughout the day.
4. ORGANIKA 6/F, Piman 49, Sukhumvit Soi 49, 02-742-6181. Open daily 10am-9pm. www.fb.com/organikahouse You may know this store thanks to its white-washed botanical Thai spa, but just one floor above is a healthfocused kitchen brought to you by Chalee Kader (chef of Surface, The Beer Bridge and Knock). Breakfast dishes range from the lemon curd crepe (B280) to waffles served with mixed berries (B340). They are
also known for their homemade tea blends, which play around with scents drawn from Organika’s spa products. We recommend: Organika Yogurt (B280) served with fresh fruits, organic chia seeds and honey. Health tip: Tea is usually considered to be a healthy beverage, and with all the varieties available, it can be a fun way to experience some different flavors while getting some health benefits. The flavenoids found in tea are widely believed to have health benefits worth exploring.
5. THEERA 8 Sukhumvit Soi 42, 090-506-2222. Open Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, Sat 10:30am-6pm. BTS Ekkamai. www. fb.com/theerahealthybakeroom This bakery-slash-cafe comes with a healthy, glutenfree, non-dairy concept for its entire range of pastry treats. Away from the baked goods, it also has a big breakfast menu, with a variety of wholewheat waffles, toasts and pancake dishes that can be customized with your own selection of toppings. We recommend: Any of their berry smoothies, which all use soymilk and coconut yogurt instead of dairy products (B125-130) and are both refreshing and filling. Health tip: Fruit juice is high in vitamins and is usually a healthier choice than coffee, carbonated colas and processed sugar-filled drinks. However, fruit juice even with “no added sugar” contains a lot of natural sugar (fructose). To help limit sugar intake, nutritionists recommend limiting fruit juice consumption to one 250ml serving per day. Find out what else you can do every day to incorporate healthier eating habits by sitting down with one of the board-certified nutritionists at Bumrungrad (www.bumrungrad.com/healthspot).

Black and white pieces are easy to style because they’re versatile and can be paired with any color. We love the simplicity of this look, with its light pop of color added to the white mix. A nice bomber jacket completes the look, along with a pair of platforms that give it a bit of street edge.
Off-shoulder tops have been such a hit recently, as has the comeback of chokers. This laid-back outfit is weekend-ready whether you’re brunching out or road tripping. Cloth chokers are comfortable and make great statement accessories, while vibrant prints make an outfit stand out.
This look forgoes florals in favor of graphic patterns in a bold and daring way. Dress it up for a formal event, or down for a casual occasion. To avoid patterns clashing, opt for a more muted and simple top but finish off the look with a pair of heeled platforms to add that extra flair.

I’m still searching for them myself. What are some of your wardrobe staples? Basic T-shirts. You can do so much with a basic white tee. Favorite 2016 trend so far? I was never a fan of off-the-shoulder tops but they have made a strong comeback and I’m now obsessed!

Rooftop Grill Hotel Indigo’s new restaurant Char has taken over the top two stories of the Wireless Road venue. With a rooftop bar on top of a stylish dining room, it takes the bar-and-grill concept from the original Char in Shanghai but also incorporates its own dishes. The kitchen, headed by French chef Lionel Vinatier (previously of Maxim and Maverick), rolls out a steakhouse menu, featuring imported beef like Darling Down wagyu from Australia and Kobe wagyu from Japan as well as local beef by butcher Arnaud Carre (of Arno’s). Steak starts at B650 for 180g, 100-day grain-fed Black Angus. Elsewhere on the menu, we also like the tuna tartar (B200) and black cod steak (B680). Don’t miss Shanghai’s best-selling banana cheesecake (B310). Hotel Indigo, 81 Wireless Rd., 02-207-4999. BTS Ploen Chit

For the third time, chef Edoardo Bonavolta is rolling out a special raw and vegan menu at Luce. The chef has been off to learn more about raw and plant-based cuisine at one of the highest-praised schools around, Living Light Culinary Institute in the USA, and has returned with inspiration for creative dishes like The Beautiful Mind (B280), which features raw sauerkraut, melon, blueberries, cashews and olive oil mayo with turmeric, flax and chia seed crackers, and mixed leaves. We really like the chef’s take on the Caprese salad, too, made with fresh almond cheese, cherry tomato emulsion, raw pesto and home-dried tomato (B320). The menu is available for both lunch and dinner through Jul 15. Eastin Grand, Sathorn Rd., 02-210-8100. BTS Surasak
Australia’s Ink Gin has been causing a big stir on the craft gin scene thanks to its bizarre color. That purple hue comes from the petals of butterfly peas, which don’t add much in terms of flavor—that’s led by juniper, lemon myrtle leaf, coriander seed, Tasmanian pepperberry and freshly peeled sundried sweet orange peel—but do help to bind the other flavors together, according to its founder and distiller, Paul Messenger. You’ll find Ink Gin behind the bar at all of Bangkok’s top gin-drinking spots—Vesper, Teens of Thailand, Bamboo Bar, Il Fumo, etc. Niks Anuman of Teens of Thailand mixes his Ink Gin and tonic with Fever Tree Mediteranian tonic water, lemon twist, butterfly pea and fresh lemon juice. Yours for B390. www.fb.com/InkDryGin
Well-loved Thonglor mainstay Little Beast teams up with German wine distributor It’s Riesling this Jun 25 for a night dedicated to freshly-caught seafood. Each of the six courses, promises chef Nan Bunyasarand, will be prepared using fish that was in the ocean no more than one day earlier, with dishes including ponzu-marinated squid noodles served with the texture of cauliflower, and bacon-poached “catch of the day” served with minty pea cream, pea shoot and pickled mustard seed. Each course will also be served with organic or biodynamic wines from It’s Riesling’s stash. There are 35 seats. Each one costs B3,500. 44/9-10 Thonglor Soi 13, 02-185-2670

Baan Phadthai Thailand's de rigueur comfort dish in a nostalgic shop-house. The buzz: Restaurateur Fred Meyer, the guy behind Issaya, Namsaah, Kombawa and Pizza Massilia, has attempted something more down-to-earth with this charming little restaurant devoted to the humble pad Thai. The decor: Nestled down the largely residential Charoenkrung Soi 44, the restaurant stands out from its salon and massage parlor neighbors due its bright blue facade. The open doors and distinct lack of air-con contribute to the old-school local eatery vibes. Inside is decorated with antique wooden panels from Ayutthaya and brass fans, while the thick wooden tables are decked out with aluminum utensil boxes, seasoning sets and few bottles of water and cola for a classic, no-frills scene.
20
The food: The Issaya Group’s executive chef Sujira Pongmorn whips up a “secret” sauce from 18 ingredients to make her pad Thai, which also features Chanthaburi noodles, house-dried shrimps, duck egg and crab fat. We’re partial to the crab meat pad Thai (B280) for the outstanding flavor combo, while other options are grilled pork (B190), grilled chicken (B190), grilled river prawn (B250) and vegetarian (B160). Appetizers include somtam with salted egg (B130), fried chicken (B190) and fried sun-dried beef (B240). Try the wrap-it-yourself miang kana (B150), in which they switch from the usual betel leaves to Chinese kale leaves, served with other ingredients like shallot, ginger, chilli, lime and peanuts in a basket. House-made Thai desserts include bua loy (taro dumplings, B120) and tub tim grob
(pomegranate-like water chestnut dumplings, B130), but the real highlight is the creamy durian steamed buns (B140) with their unique smell and surprisingly approachable taste. The drinks: Expect old-school drinks like Thai tea, chrysanthemum tea (B90-100) and Thai black coffee (B100-120) as well as a few Sangsom-based cocktails (B150-190). Why you should care: Baan Phadthai adds premium ingredients to a classic Thai dish. The results are refined without price tags that are too crazy. This is also a fun neighborhood to explore on foot. NEW AND NOTED
Got Seoul Just around the corner from our favorite seafood truck, Summer Street, Ari's newest Korean restaurant, Joha (59 Ari Soi 2, 097247-9777) comes courtesy of former flight attendant and chef Kay Cho. Inside the small six-table venue they have you barbecuing your own beef on hot stones brought all the way from Busan (B350). There's also bulgogi (B280), kimchi bap with cheese (B250), dak galbi (stir-fried chicken with cheese, B250) and dolsot bibimbap (six vegetables, beef, egg and rice, B200) each of which are served with kimchi, bean sprouts and Chinese cabbage that the brothers prepare fresh every morning.
Door to Door Ari's chic new cafe Common Room x Ari (Phaholyothin Soi 5, 062-416-7746) doubles as a delivery service bringing ice cream, baked goods and coffee to your door. The shop itself is a pretty minimal affair, putting a clear focus on quality coffee. Beans come courtesy of top local roasters like Ceresia and
Brave, with blends as well as single origins from Kenya and Colombia available as latte or flat white (B80), French press (B120) or hot and cold drip (B150). Each morning staff bake fresh a number of treats including croissants (B30), roasted pork pies (B45) and classic brownies (B75). There's also a set menu for B145 which includes your choice of drink and Thai dishes like moo gratiem (fried pork with garlic) and gang kiew waan (green curry).
Breakfast Time One of Bangkok's newest bike-themed cafes comes courtesy of the Nandha boutique hotel in Phrom Phong. Passion Cafe (14/11 Sukhumvit Soi 33/5, 0-2662-3395) deals in traditional all-day breakfasts (two eggs either scrambled, fried or as an omelet, sausages, bacon and baguette, B220) as well as tuna melts (B170), Parisian ham and cheddar toasts (B170) and smoked salmon scrambles (B220). To drink there are cortados (like a piccolo without the froth, B80), matcha lattes (B115), chamomile tea (B80) and virgin mojitos (B100). Joseph Lam
Athenee Tower, 63 Wireless Rd., 02-1688100. Open Mon-Fri 11am-2pm; daily 5pm-midnight. BTS Phloen Chit Despite the consultation of Eduard Bosch, a former chef de cuisine at the prestigious modern kitchen of El Bulli in Spain, Islero does something far more traditional. Head chef Pedro Serrano dishes out authentic Spanish food like Iberico ham croquettes (B480), grilled octopus tentacles (B460) served with beans in Castilian stew, baked fish fillet with potatoes and almonds (B680) and the highlight Josper-grilled, Segovian-style suckling pig (B3,900 for a half pig). That said, there are still some items that nod to El Bulli's modernism, like olive spheres (B80) and deconstructed Spanish omelet (B380) served in the form of cream and espuma in a martini glass. For dessert, try tocinillo de cielo (egg yolk flan, B230), which bursts with intense yolk flavor. Cava wine bar also serves a range of Spanish wine (starting at B260). Thonglor’s super-stylish Black Amber Barber Shop & Tattoo (between Thonglor Soi 5 and 7) is behind this full-on gentlemen’s whiskey bar and networking spot. The bar sits on the first floor, focusing mainly on whiskey (mainly single malt) and rum. The shelves are filled with familiar bottles like Glendfiddich, Ballantine’s and Suntory, as well as cheaper blends including Teacher’s, Browmore and the esoteric Monkey Shoulder. Prices, rather surprisingly, aren’t too bad either. 160/17 Thonglor Soi 6, 092-276-2772. Open Tue-Sun 6:30pm-2am. www.fb.com/blackambersocialclub
WHISGARS
The buzz: The people behind round-the-clock cafe 24 Owls have been pretty active this year. After relaunching the original spot on Ekkamai Soi 12 as Thirsty Owls, abandoning the 24-hour opening times in favor of a new focus on imported beer and wine, they’ve now also taken up this hidden space on Sukhumvit Soi 61 to open a whiskey bar. The decor: Like Thirsty Owls, The Owls Society Whiskey Saloon sees a two-story Ekkamai home renovated with a warm and cozy vibe— but that’s where the similarities end. The head designer of fashion label Issue Kai London is responsible for the mature, industrial-meetsgentlemen’s-club style, with all the vintage furnishings are imported straight from England. If you’re looking for a place to host your own party, there are two private rooms upstairs. Reservation and a B3,500 charge is required for the smaller room (capacity 10), while the bigger one costs B5,000 for a maximum of 30 people. The music: Live bands perform from Thursday to Saturday, mainly specializing in jazz and soul. The food: There’s a heavy choice of bar snacks to go with your drinks, and Italian seems to dominate here. The thin-base pizza makes excellent bar grub, like the Thin Thin Bacon Truffle Egg (B190), which reminds us of carbonara with its creamy sauce, crispy bacon and egg topping. Other perfect snacking options include chicken wings (B250) and herbal deep-fried frogs legs with ginger and garlic (B400). The
mains list is pretty huge too, with steaks, burgers and pasta. We like the gorgonzola and lobster ravioli (B550), which features the Italian cheese and walnut-filled ravioli floating in a bisque soup beside a grilled river prawn and Parmesan foam. The drinks: The main focus here is whiskey. There are over 100 bottles from all over the world, categorized by country and region. They range from Glenfiddich 12 years old (B280/glass) and Macallan 12 years old (B400) from Scotland’s Speyside region to Smokehead (B350) from Islay. Just check the menu or head over to the bar for a recommendation. Gin dominates the white spirit side with over 30 bottles like Tanqueray, Botanist and Colombian aged gin. Familiar face Suchada “Fahbeer” Sopajaree (one of 2016’s 12 finalists at Diageo World Class Thailand Competition and previously behind Hugo Eatery & Bar) mans the bar here. You can expect all the vintage classics as well as her three signature drinks. We like The Great Grey (Johnnie Walker Black Label, Cynar, Port Cherry and patron XO Cafe, B360), a whiskey-based, spirit-forward creation with a coffee kick to the aftertaste. For something easier, try Horned (B360), a muleinspired drink which sees Maker’s Mark bourbon mixed with homemade pear and rosemary puree, Southern Comfort, lemon and simple syrup. Fahbeer also said she’ll do monthly special drinks based on different ingredients—be sure to ask before placing your order. Sukhumvit Soi 61. Open daily 5pm-2am. www.fb.com/theowlsobkk
Opened back in late 2013, Whisgars was one of the rare places to attempt the whiskey bar concept outside a hotel. Known for having one of the longest whiskey menus in town (mostly single malts) the brand has since expanded with branches in Phloen Chit and Silom. Bottles come not only from all over Scotland but around the world, most notably Japan. If you’re new or not sure where to start, there are rotating whiskey flights to try before deciding on a bottle, too. 16 Sukhumvit Soi 23, 02-661-3220 981 Silom Rd., 02-661-3220. HANAKARUTA
This revamped three-story shophouse-turned bar has a feel that eschews the traditional izakaya cliches of pine wood and old beer posters for a more contemporary, if a little art deco, vibe. The result is a lofty space on the first floor that’s dominated by dark wood and the striking bar with its towering floor-to-ceiling backlit shelves stacked with bottles. The upstairs is a little cozier, with maroon-colored bench seating as well as intimate booths clad with more dark wood trellis. The drink menu consists of an impressive selection of shochu served with a hand-crafted ice ball and housemade umeshu, but we say the highlights are those whiskey bottles behind the bar. NEWS Two Bangkok Restaurants Make World’s 50 Best List
Gaggan
22
Earlier this month, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants announced its 2016 list at a ceremony in New York. For the first time, the number one slot went to Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, who have made the top three for the last three years and came second to El Celler de Can Roca last year. Second place went to the Roca brothers’ El Celler in Girona, Spain, while New York’s Eleven Madison Park jumped from No.5 last year up to No.3 this year. Peruvian restaurant Central retains its place at No.4 while the four-time winner Noma fell to No.5, the lowest it has placed since 2008. Bangkok’s Gaggan restaurant, earlier named the best in Asia, slipped from No.10 to No.23, while Japan’s Narisawa, ranked No.2 in the regional list, made it to No.8 in the global list. David Thompson’s Nahm (No. 8 in Asia’s 50 Best list) fell
to No.37 from No. 22 in 2015. Since 2002, The World’s 50 Best Restaurant list has been awarding titles to exciting restaurants across the world, as voted by an international panel. The list, though coveted, is controversial among chefs and industry pros for several reasons. Some people point to the questionable standard of the voting method while others doubt transparency. The list has also become highly repetitive (this year’s top five is basically last year’s top five), while many critics point to discrepencies between regional and global lists, as well as an over-representation of molecular gastronomy. But everyone loves a list—read Top Tables 2016 for our take on Bangkok’s top 116 restaurants at goo.gl/ WLOvIG—and the more debate the better. Next year’s awards are set to take place in Melbourne, Australia.

brunch spot on Thonglor. The food, too, serves up the occasional surprise. The heap of tiny chicken wings (B90) are perfectly crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. The laab (B95) is fluffy and herbal, with a capable seasoning that’s just shy of perfect (we could do with more lime). Suited to the Bangkok crowd, the somtams (B60-80) are a tad on the sweet side, with medium heat , but the green papaya is crunchy, the dressing flavorful. And this all comes at very reasonable prices. Sadly, a few dishes do fall south of average, such as the waterlogged salmon and mushrooms salad (B185), or the dry, parboiled beef (B120) that looks more pan-fried than charcoal grilled. In general, the indoor kitchen means this just isn’t a place for delicious grilled dishes (forget smokey catfish or chicken thighs), nor can it really handle its fancier creations. From MahaNakhon to Empire Tower, this cute and efficient restaurant is about as authentic as air-con Isaan gets in this neck of the woods—which explains the crowds—but that doesn’t make it a destination.

Thonglor’s new foodie mecca, The Commons, is packed with temptations at every turn, from some of the city’s most trusted names. One of the most popular ground-floor kiosks is Soul Food 555, which is run by the folks behind the perpetually packed Soul Food Mahanakorn just down the road. The single-page menu reads like a greatest hits of Thai street food, leaping from Isaan sausage to krapao to various noodle dishes, with some remixes tacked on, too. The most obvious fusion nods are the burgers, which take familiar Thai dishes and slap them between two pieces of a charcoal-toasted Conkey’s brioche bun. Of the three varieties, the Khao Soy Cowboy (pulled pork in khao soy curry, B250) is the undoubted highlight with its tangy curry complemented by the satisfying crunch of crispy egg nood les. The watermelon
pickle on the side really helps to cut t h r o u g h t h e f l a v o r, t o o . I n comparison, the Risky Chicken (fried chicken and somtam with Sriracha mayo, B250) is a slightly waterlogged affair, though the chicken is succulent. Another fusion hit is the lamb krapao (stir-fried minced lamb with holy basil, B275). Not overly spicy, the sauce’s mild sweet notes mingle nicely with the tender, aromatic meat, while the addition of fennel into the mix is nothing short of inspired. While part of The Commons’ appeal is the communal seating which lets you pick and choose from the various kiosks, we recommend pulling up a stool at Soul Food 555’s counter and watching the staff dance around the tiny open kitchen. Highlights from the grill station are the tender, tangy and juicy yam nua yang (spicy beef salad, B300) and the mixed grill of house-made sai oua and sai krok Isaan (Northern-style and Isaan sausages, B250), even though the latter is a tad mushy. We’re totally addicted to the banana flower fritters (B220) with their powerful aroma. These salty drinking snacks are ideally paired with the simple yet smooth Mao Prao (smoked coconut with a shot of three-year-old Havana rum, B200). With a concept that successfully blends classic street eats and fusion fare, Soul Food 555 makes for an all-round fun and tasty experience.
