A checklist of BK Magazine’s most important discoveries this week. You’ll be able to build tall buildings in the Old Town The BMA has discreetly announced a plan to pay landowners for not using their land to its fully permittable building potential. Not only will landowners have the option of swapping development rights for tax breaks or other incentives, but they’ll be able to sell those rights to a neighboring developer, allowing that developer to exceed what would normally be allowed on their plot alone. In short: lower taxes for people living in single houses in pricey parts of town and new ways to infringe on the building codes. Popscene is back! Up until the end of 2014, Popscene was one of Bangkok’s busiest indie concert promoters, bringing us gigs from cult acts like Iceage, Thee Oh Sees and !!!. Now the guy behind it, Matt Smith (formerly known as Jimmy Livewire, frontman of The Standards), is back from a stint at barber school promising a new run of shows. Popscene returns with the visit of LA-based singer Haroula Rose on Sep 9 at Whiteline, complete with Britpop and ‘60s rock after party. Someone from Alinea is coming Alinea could well be the best restaurant in the world. It’s definitely one of the most innovative, with dishes that can be veritable sculptures and a breadth of flavors that must be in the hundreds for a single meal. Now the owners of Thonglor’s highend cocktail bar Rabbit Hole say they’re bringing in a chef from the Chicago institution to open a fine-dining venue. But first, the chef will debut with some “extraordinary” bar snacks at Rabbit Hole. Stay tuned. Taper is closing It seems that not opening your restaurant for dinner might not be such a genius idea after all. Taper, the lunch-only place that opened in Thonglor Soi 13 at the start of 2015, was a challenge to describe. Even as a brunch venue, the fusion recipes and dark shop-house made it a tough sell. There was plenty of talent in that kitchen, though, so we hope their next move is a bit less confusing. Thai indie films are taking over international screens Premiering at Venice International Film Festival this Aug 31, director Chai Siris’ 15-minute film 500,000 Years documents the eerie supernatural events that occur at an archeological site in Lampang where fossils were once found. The screening follows last week’s debut of Anocha Suwichakornpong’s movie Dhao Kanong: By the Time it Gets Dark at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland, which follows the events of the 1976 massacre at Thammasat University. When will either film hit Thai screens, you ask? We’re not holding our breath.

HOT OR NOT
Hot: Taiwan
Not: Shenzhen
Earlier this month, China decided to stop issuing visas on arrival to Thai tourists coming through Shenzhen. Last to hear of the news were the Thai consulate in Guangdong and Thai Embassy in Beijing. Oh, and the whole of Thailand, including the people left stranded at Shenzhen immigration. Next holiday, give the mainland a miss and head across the strait to Taiwan, which just waived visa requirements for Thais. Tai-gi!
INTERVIEW
Hot: Standup
Not: This weekend
The most exciting parties happening this weekend sound like nights at college you want to forget (see page 19). So stay in, don’t get drunk and save your money for the big upcoming comedy gigs instead. First there’s Note Udom, whose latest show happens on Sep 3-11. followed on Sep 11 by UK comic Jimmy Carr—the biggest name in comedy we’ve ever seen visit here (see page 21).
Hot: Hanging On
Not: Democracy
Days after the referendum, the current military regime was in the news saying they definitely would not set up a political party. The next day, plans were announced for a pro-coup military party backing Dear Leader for prime minister. That same evening, he was on every TV station claiming at least 15 more months of dictatorial power under Section 44. Welcome to the world of post-referendum democracy.
Hot: Pokemon in libraries
Not: Pokemon in temples
Pokemon Go is a terrifying danger to society and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission wants it banned. That’s unless the game’s developer bends to its list of demands—one being that Pokemon shouldn’t be put anywhere near temples. Instead, they say, the game should encourage kids to visit the library—the kind of suggestion that only someone who has literally never visited a library in their life would make.
Piyasit Pattanapram, 35, is the owner of the Minizoo exotic pet shop in Chatuchak Market. He sells species from all around the world: capybara from South America, panther chameleons from Madagascar and African albino porcupines. Here, BK chats to him about this seemingly shady trade. What did you do before starting this shop? I used to work in sales. I actually didn’t have any experience or education working with animals. My knowledge comes from personal experiences and the internet. Then what made you open a pet shop? I’ve loved pets since I was a child, and have long been interested in exotic pets like iguanas and sugar gliders [a type of possum]. About seven or eight years ago I began breeding animals that cost about B2,000 or 3,000 and would keep the beautiful ones while selling the rest on Pantip to gain profit. After that I began a reptile shop here at Chatuchak, then about four years ago I turned it into an exotic pet shop. Who are your target customers? Most of our animals are quite highend, like raccoons or monkeys, which cost over B10,000, so we aim for people who have high incomes and really want to have this kind of pet to distinguish themselves. However, teenagers are becoming target customers as well, because they have purchasing power and are quite impulsive—we offer them things like baby squirrels.

Going Live
The best bars to catch live music in Bangkok and the upcoming shows worth getting excited about! By BK staff
1979 Vinyl and Unknown Pleasures [Indie] Perched on the fourth floor above Black Amber Barber Shop, this tiny record store also plays host to regular lineups of rising indie acts the owners have earmarked for big things. You'll have to squeeze in, though, as capacity barely reaches 30. 4/F, Black Amber, Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 086606-2230. www.fb.com/1979vinyl
Adhere 13th [Jazz & blues] Just around the corner from backpacker-central Khao San Road, this live blues and jazz insitution packs out every night. Indoors can only seat about 20, so you might find yourself perched outdoors, Singha beer in hand, listening to the loud and energetic music being belted out to a crowd of old-time expats and self-styled local blues-men. 13 Samsen Rd., 089-769-4613. www.fb.com/ adhere13thbluesbar
Baan Puen [Indie] [Jazz & blues] Baan Puen lives up to its name, which literally translates to "a friend's house," by offering a folksy, toned-down alternative to Ekkamai's hi-so clubs. Expect to hear lots of Thai and international covers—plus originals—performed acoustically, along with jazz, blues and more alternative sounds. 3/F, Ekamai Mall, Ekkamai Soi 10, 061-824-1747
Bar21 [Indie] [Electronic] RCA’s former indie hot spot Cosmic Cafe is now Bar 21. The same DJ who used to play at Mustache Bar and Live RCA focuses on a new style of electronic tunes for RCA—think funky house and Berlin beats rather than the massive EDM tunes of Onyx or Route 66. There's still plenty of live music , too, from mostly underground acts. RCA, Soi Soonvijai, 080-302-9752. www.fb.com/ bar21bkk
Brown Sugar [Jazz & blues] Open since 1985 but relocated from Langsuan Road to Phra Sumen a couple of years ago, Brown Sugar still features the same list of Western comfort food and classic cocktails, while the stage is reserved for local jazz talents like Tissue Paper and June & Mother Funky. 469 Phra Sumen Rd., 081-805-7759
Fatty’s Bar & Diner [Indie] [Rock] There’s a real sense of community at this Rama 9 dive bar. Fatty’s is a major supporter of Bangkok's independent music scene, hosting regular gigs from up-and-comers during events like the notoriously raucous annual Fatty’s Fest. Bring your preferred choice of instrument along every Tuesday night for their popular open-mic event. The kitchen has a real way with all-American junk food, too. 598/66 Asoke Din Daeng Rd., 081-438 7221, 02-2452965. MRT Phra Ram 9. www.fb.com/fattysbardiner
Check Inn 99 [Jazz & blues] This old-school institution recently moved to the basement of Oakwood serviced apartments in Phrom Phong. Every Sunday afternoon it hosts improvised jazz featuring many wellknown artists from around Bangkok and abroad.
Parking Toys' Watt
Sukhumvit Soi 24, 081-735-7617. BTS Phrom Phong
Jam [Indie] [Electronic] Nestled down a residential alley off Sathorn Road, this compact bar-slash-gallery is the setting for all sorts of esoteric sounds, from drum ‘n’ bass DJs to live dub and indie-rock. On weekends, the crowd often spills out onto the road, with the party continuing long after the shutters come down. 41 Charoen Rat Soi 1, 083-5451-833. BTS Surasak. www.fb.com/jamcafebkk
Jazz Happens! [Jazz & blues] This little jazz boutique owned by Nu Vudthivichai, one of Thailand’s most prominent pianists, showcases the skills of a wide range of performers, from contestants on The Voice to students and graduates of Silpakorn Jazz Faculty. Order a bottle of Singha, some gab glaem (drinking food), and swing away.

Phra Athit Rd., 02-282-9934
Maggie Choo’s [Jazz & blues] [Indie] [Pop] The people behind this stunning Silom basement bar are starting to get more involved in the Bangkok underground music scene. That means that along with the regular Thursday jazz nights, the bar has been hosting a few names from the Bangkok indie scene lately. The space, as ever, is something to behold, evoking the decadence of opium or gambling dens.

Underground/F, Hotel Novotel Bangkok Fenix, Silom Rd. www.fb.com/maggiechoos
Older [Pop] [Easy listening] [Indie] This restaurant-slash-bar right next to BTS Sanam Pao has live cover bands on show from Wednesday to Friday, 8pm onwards, spanning indie pop, easy listening and indie rock. Given the nightly live band, the place looks more suited to whiskey (B2,200 for JW Black) and soda than classic cocktails, but they can definitely mix a Vieux Carre or a Boulevardier. 212/5 Phahon Yothin Rd., 087-511-4466. BTS Sanam Pao. www.fb.com/olderbangkok
Parking Toys’ Watt [Indie] [Electronic] Run by the guy formerly behind the live music institution Parking Toys, this spacious venue at the end the back of Ekkamai gets top marks for its open-air, Marrakesh-inspired bar, retro furnishings and big focus on music. It has established itself as one of the city's more eclectic live music venues thanks to live music every night (except Mon) with styles ranging from ambient and synth, folk and garage rock to acoustic. 164 Soonvijai Soi 14, 02-318-1415, 081-814-7919. www.fb.com/Wattparkingtoys

Saxophone [Jazz & blues]
[Indie] [Rock]
One of the city’s longest-standing music institutions, Saxophone is best known for its jazzy offerings led by Koh Mr. Saxman. However, a dose of solid reggae can be had here too. Just swing by on Fri and stick around long (and late) enough for Thailand’s godfathers of reggae, T-Bone, to take to the stage (every Fri night, from midnight1:30am).
Awesome gab glaem and some of the cheapest beer in town make the beer garden here pretty irresistible. But wait, there's more: consistently good gigs week after week making it the place to go to catch local underground acts before they're famous. A ton of international indie acts have also performed here over the years. Ladprao Soi 8, 081-173-3616, 085-146-8017, 086-8668869. MRT Phahon Yothin

Smalls [Jazz & blues]
Tep Bar [Thai]
This absinthe-swilling, retro-styled Suan Phlu venue of David Jacobson, the founder of Q Bar, hosts regular Wednesday jazz evenings featuring the likes of Space Jazz Trio+1, Dan Phillips Trio and Pong Nakornchai Quartet.
This self-proclaimed "Thai culture bar" is not your average live music venue. Its soundtrack is all about classic Central luk krung music. The band here highlights ra nad (wooden xylophone), sor au (alto fiddle) and ja kae (similar to a lap guitar)—the kind of sounds you hear in traditional khon plays, only performed in an updated style.
186/3 Suanphlu Soi 1, 081-819-6808. www.fb.com/ smallsbkk
Soulbar [Funk] [Jazz & blues] Tucked in a small shop-house down in the old Talad Noi neighhborhood, this simple but tastefully turned out bar plays host to live soul and funk bands every Wed-Sat. Drinks focus on craft beers, while food trucks regularly park up out front. See its Facebook for the schedule. 945 Charoenkrung Rd., 093-220-0441. www.fb.com/ livesoulbarbangkok
Studio Lam [Thai] [World music] This bar from DJ Maft Sai, the guy behind Zudrangma Records, pairs global grooves with quality drinks. Nightly bands and DJs present what's probably the most diverse soundtrack in all of Bangkok, from Thai molam and luk thung to deep-house and African sounds. Another highlight is the ya dong, a potent form of herbal whiskey from Northeastern Thailand, that's mixed into cocktails or sold by the shot. Sukhumvit Soi 51, 02-261-6661. BTS Thong Lo. www. fb.com/studiolambangkok

Whiteline [Indie] [Electronic] This renovated multi-story shop-house brings a welcome dose of live music to Silom. Aside from the live experimental sounds and DJ nights, it also hosts the occasional craft beer gathering and mini film festival. On the busiest nights, you'll also find some of the city's top food trucks parked outside. Silom Soi 8, 087-061-1117. BTS Sala Daeng
Wine Bibber Sangria
[Rock] [Indie] [Hip-hop]
After 15 years in Thonglor, Wine Bibber Sangria now calls Ekkamai home. A far cry from its dingy original incarnation, this sleek, multi-floored bar sits somewhere between the much-missed Sonic Ekkamai and Grease (Sukhumvit Soi 49). The roster sees some 15 bands—residents and oneoffs—perform monthly. Daily happy hours, potent sake shots and an LED dance floor make for one fun night out. Ekkamai Soi 2, 02-714-0709. BTS Ekkamai
Legendary Thai rocker "Phuea Chiwit" celebrates the 35th anniversary of his band Carabao with support from other Thai musicians. Tickets available at all 7-Elevens. Aug 27, 6pm. Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani, 99 Popular Rd., 02-833-4455. B800-5,000
CHVRCHES After failing to take the stage back in 2014 when they unexpectedly canceled, the Scottish synth-pop band make their Bangkok debut alongside local indie rockers Polycat, Jelly Rocket and Somkiat, as well as up and co m i n g b a n d s M o n key Business, Mirrr and 23’0. On top of that, there will be installations from visual artists Dudesweet, Eyedropper Fill and Tuna Dunn. The 57-year-old performer found global fame for his deadpan delivery and lyrics dripping with dry wit and political themes as part of the popular English rock band in the ‘80s that brought us hits like “How Soon is Now?” and “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now.” Oct 18. CHANTHABURI
Beach Eats
In the heart of Chanthaburi’s increasingly popular old community, Chantabun, lies the new riverside restaurant and guesthouse Samrab Chan (039-460-359). Nestled in the crumbling old house on whose wall is painted the town’s Cuban-style “Floridita” mural, right opposite the grand Maephra Patisonti Niramon Catholic Church, Samrab Chan delivers Chanthaburi favorites including pad Thai sen chan (stir-fried noodle, B75) and moo chamuang (pork curry with garcinia cowa leaves, B120) as well as gai pad krawan (stirfried chicken with cardamom and herbs, B120). The second floor is home to the accommodation, including the master bedroom which looks out over the church and the river. Room rates start at B800.
HUA HIN
Dark Times Hua Hin’s latest restaurant comes in the form of a giant black Thai pavilion right beside the beach serving Thai-Western fusion. Baan Dum (089919-9276, www.fb.com/Baandum) lures people away from other hot new Hua Hin openings like Seen Space and Khao Takiab thanks to a vast lawn complete with laidback seating overlooking the water and live jazz music. Dishes here relate to the color of the house—black. That means squid-ink aplenty in dishes like pla muek khai pad nam pla (fried-egg squid marinated with fish sauce, B250) and Pizza Baan Dum (squid ink dough topped with seafood, B280). They also serve fresh seafood starting from B800-900 per kilogram. Save room for their dessert like black sesame cake (B65 per piece, B100 for two pieces) and chao guay (black jelly smoothie topped with red sugar, B60).
AIRLINES
Flying High Thai Lion Air (lionairthai.com) is proving a fierce contender in the low-cost airline game. They recently launched a new route from Bangkok to Yangon starting from as low as B1,865 for a round-trip. Travelers also get a whopping 30kg baggage allowance for international flights between Bangkok and Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Yangon. There's good news if you’re traveling domestically, too: up until Sep 30 you can get tickets to Hat Yai, Krabi, Surat Thani, Phuket and Nakhon Si Thammarat starting from B625 per flight. Also check out the Lion Holiday packages at goo.gl/u7hn0k for three-day-twonight stays with tickets starting as low as B4,200.
JAPAN
Fit for a Prince In very downtown Tokyo, The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho (goo.gl/2nSE8U) is a kaleidoscopic blend of colors on the 30th-36th floors of a new mixed-use building. Part of Starwood’s Luxury Collection hotel portfolio, it features 250 guestrooms including 11 suites, some with bathtubs poised over incredible views of the Tokyo skyline. If the hotel’s four bars and restaurants don’t take your fancy, head downstairs to next door’s La Maison Kloi, a French bistro which sits inside the newly refurbished Akasaka Prince Classic House, the 1930s Western-style former palace of the last crown prince of Korea. Room rates start at 42,500 yen (B14,519).

Adventure Time Five amazing outdoor adventures around Bangkok. Ride a bicycle all the way to Ayutthaya
Go whale-watching in Petchaburi
Escape the city with a day-long bike tour with Spice Roads, who challenge bikers on a 75km route from Bangkok to Ayutthaya that promises a smooth ride along the back roads. The tour starts in Bangkok and ends in Ayutthaya’s Wat Chaiwattanaram, a UNESCO World Heritage site, while passing through canals, villages and paddy fields. The tour costs B3,950/head, with bikes included.
It may come as a surprise to you but Bang Tabun offers one of Southeast Asia’s top whale-watching experiences— and August is the best time of the year for it. Just make sure you choose an ethical whale-watching company. Check out Wild Encounter Thailand, founded by cetologist Jirayu Ekkul, who operates whale-watching trips every week just a 45-minute drive away from Bangkok. Each one costs B2,300 per person (or B1,900 for women during August). From the pier, you’ll head out on a whalewatching vessel into the upper gulf of Thailand—popular territory for the majestic Bryde’s whale.

Explore the mangroves in Samut Sakhom
District 13
Back in June, the governor of Samut Sakhon Manrat Ratanasukhon led a campaign to plant 770 mangrove trees to celebrate His Majesty the King’s 70th anniversary on the throne, adding to the already massive 1,600-acre mangrove area now at Ao Mahachai mangrove forest. The research area offers a nature trail around the Tha Chin River where travelers can spend the day exploring a well-constructed bamboo path that takes you deep into nature. Those feeling a bit more adventurous can make a weekend out of it by camping out at the on-site camp grounds. Live life on the fast lane in Sa Kaeo Province Designed by world mountain bike champion Claudio Caluori, this BMX track is located in the only bicyclethemed hotel in the country and features a series of smooth asphalt bumps which simulate riding downhill. The track is open to the public and entirely free to use for those who bring their own bike, while rentals are available for B200/ hour including a helmet. It’s not just reserved for bike riders, either: skateboarders, rollerbladers and other extreme sports get to have a go, too. Velo Hotel

Relive the Hunger Games in Nonthaburi This little war zone littered with haystacks, targets and obstacles invites friends and families to have an active day out with an afternoon of archery. At District 13, you’re divided into two teams and the aim is simple: shoot everyone on the opposing team. There’s also a separate range, where you’ll be taught some basic archery and can hone your shooting skills before entering the arena. It’s all safe as well—arrows are rubber-tipped to ensure no one gets hurt. Day packages cost B350 on Wed-Fri and B450 on weekends, with discounts for students and members. Booking by the hour is B190 per person. All prices include equipment and basic training. District 13, 69/399 Srisaman Rd., 083-084-2850. www.fb.com/district13archery

With The Unknownmaker’s customizable silver jewelry, you can make a (kind of) bold punk statement that won’t get you fired. Their gothic alphabet rings for guys and girls come in moody gothic fonts played out in 92.5-percent silver with a lovely burnished finish. The guys’ models measure around 1.8cm and cost B2,650, while the women’s 1.3cm models are B2,250. They also do a line of bangles—chunky, steampunk looking things decorated with the brand’s horseshoe logo and available in two sizes (both B7,450). Look out for new items like earrings and bracelets soon. They’re not in any stores yet, so you’ll have to head to Facebook if you want to buy. www.fb.com/theunknownmaker, www.theunknownmaker.com

The 2016 Design Excellence Awards (DEMark) are finally out, featuring 67 winners who have now gone on to join the Good Design Awards in Tokyo. Here are our top picks. By Earn Saenmuk
Be Leaf
Tea Time
Designer: Dhananadee Art Ceramic Co., Ltd Get it at: Yet to launch. Check www.fb.com/Dhanabadee for updates. Why it's special: These ceramic coasters not only look cool on your coffee table, but their leaf pattern actually helps absorb water droplets from your glass. No more getting annoyed at your glass sticking to the coaster—we like.
Designer: Sirikarn Jirajbhaskornkul Get it at: www.fb.com/SaprangCraftJewelry, IG: @saprang_craftjewellery, B1,500 Why it's special: These classy tea strainers let you carry your loose leaf tea anywhere even without the pot. It also has a lid to save you from spilling tea leaves everywhere. Your tea time just got 100 times fancier.

Jour Waterproof Notebook
Designer: Apiwat Chitapanya Get it at: Launching at Bangkok International Gift Fair and Bangkok International Houseware Fair 2016 (BIG+BIH) in October. Check www.fb.com/prob2decor for updates. Why it's special: Looking a little like something that belongs in the Addams Family home, this extremely detailed side table is made of black stainless steel carefully welded together to resemble real feathers.
Designer: Subhadanai Subhapholsiri Get it at: www.fb.com/journotebook or Think Space B2S (Central Festival Eastville), Be Trend (Siam Paragon), B360 (A6) or B480 (A5) Why it's special: The pages are stone paper (water- and grease-resistant, almost tear-proof) while the cover, made of nylon, has small pockets to store small items so they are safe from water damage.
Many-go-Round Layer Collection Designer: Many Many Co., Ltd. Get it at: www.fb.com/manygoround, B1,990 Why it's special: The idea came from plastic trays used in industrial freezers, which are narrow and stackable. Made from wood-plastic composites, the product is eco-friendly and can be used as a serving tray, a storage box and a table—cool, useful and perfect for Bangkok's cramped condos.
Let's Plant Postcard Designer: Weerapon Wongtawan Get it at: www.lukyang.com and ODS Store (Siam Discovery), B100 Why it's special: Let’s Plant postcards not only feature pictures of delicious Thai dishes, but they also come with a QR code which reveals the recipe and a video on how to cook it, as well as a small pouch filled with the required vegetable seeds.

Holder Folder #A4 Designer: Teerapol Akaratiwa and Warunya Nuntasunti Get it at: www.fb.com/LeastStudio or ODS Store (Siam Discovery), B1,490 Why it's special: Yes, you are looking at a cutting mat. The designers wanted to see how such a tool would operate outside the office, so they created this cool folder made from natural rubber—it is cutproof, soft to the touch and stylish. Very cool.
The Barcode: T&T Metal Comb
Holder Folder
Designer: Pongpol Yodmuangcharoen Get it at: www.toughandtumble.com, B790 (or B990 customized) Why it's special: It lets you style your hair without it looking too stiff. The Barcode features an inconsistent comb teeth pattern that’s customized according to an individual’s birth date, which its creators say provides a much more natural hairstyle than a regular comb. Plus, it’s metal and will probably last forever.

At Choi Choi, chef-owner Doo Hyeok Choi serves up crispy Korean-style fried chicken. Combining his food-industry-family background with his experience in Korean restaurant kitchens, he developed his own recipes for the fried chicken (from B119) and accompanying sauces. On top of other familiar finds like kimchi soup (B215) and bibimbap (mixed rice, B205), you should try the sister bibim guksu (mixed noodles, B195), served cold with a house-made, gochujang-based sauce, as well as the crispy-crust ttokochi (fried rice cake with sweet and sour sauce, B35). Side dishes like kimchi, stir-fried potatoes and pickles are made in-house and refillable. Stay tuned for more items, including bingsu (Korean-style shaved ice) and soju cocktails. 2/F, Habito, Sukhumvit 77, 095-326-8055. Open daily 11am-10pm.
Chef Alessandro Boglione runs Al Castello, a restaurant in Italy’s Piedmont region which has kept hold of a Michelin star for the past six years thanks to its contemporary take on Piedmont-Mediterranean cuisine that says no to butter and only uses olive oil instead. He’ll be in Bangkok to cook at Sukhumvit’s Enoteca Italiana from Sep 14-17. We’ve seen the five-course menu and can tell you it goes big on red meats, game and truffle, while there’s also a full seafood-only version. Both cost B3,500 or B5,000 with wine pairing. If you don’t know Enoteca, then you should. It sits tucked down Sukhumvit Soi 27 and has been dishing out some of the most ambitious yet still comforting Italian food in Bangkok since 2004. 39 Sukhumvit Soi 27, 02-258-4386. Open daily 6pm-midnight. BTS Asoke / MRT Sukhumvit
After its Bangkok debut at the end of last year, the Phuket-hailing salad joint we love for its generous portions now has a second location. The new Farmfactory at Sathorn Square provides the same fresh salad options in a bigger, trendier space, starting from as early as 8am. Pick from one of the pre-designed choices (from B135), which you can customize, or make your own bowl from scratch (starting B119). Try the Magic Bowl (B155 for regular size) which mixes greens with red onion, pepper, spicy quinoa, sundried tomato, black olives, almond slices, roast chicken and a zesty viniagrette dressing. Fresh cold-pressed juices are also available at B125. G/F, Sathorn Square, Sathorn Rd., 093-279-2796. Open daily 8am-8pm. BTS Chong Nonsi

OPEN DOOR
Kinkao Traditional Thai comfort food with a Southern slant. The buzz: The people behind top Bangkok restaurants like Naj, The Local and Crab and Claw have ventured a bit out of town to open this new restaurant at Central Eastville. Here, things are a lot more casual than at the sister Thai restaurants, but they certainly don’t compromise on quality and flavors. The decor: Not much different to your typical mall restaurant, but welcoming all the same. To represent the food, they blend some everyday Thai elements into the decor: one wall shines with silver in patterns taken from traditional metal water bowls, while another features colorful hand fans. Food is served in the type of nostalgic enamel plates and bowls you'd find at your grandma’s place.
18
The food and drinks: The owners have gone back to their roots with traditional Thai comfort food, sourcing the best possible ingredients from all over the country as well as making as many things possible from scratch. Recipes are drawn from the owners’ Eastern-hailing father and Southern mother, as well as some rare ancient cookbook finds. Highlights span Southern-style yellow curry with coconut shoot (B250), crab curry (B380) and stewed pork belly (B290) as well as the flavorful pla tapian tom kem (B380), a family recipe in which they simmer java barb for 15 hours until you can actually chew all the bones. Other fish dishes depend on the daily catch from the Andaman Sea, such as pla sam rod (deep-fried fish
with sweet and sour sauce) and deep-fried fish with tamarind sauce (both B380). You can also find some of The Local’s favorites here, like the Rama V recipe gaeng ranjuan (shrimp paste soup, B200-220). Why you should care: It’s like eating The Local-quality food in a more casual setting, even if you might have to travel a bit further for it. NEW AND NOTED
Freshly Baked Toast Company (G/F, Central Eastville, Praditmanoontham Rd., 088-499-7971) rolls out savory and sweet dishes all centered around baked dough. The on-site bakery preps fresh-daily treats like milk bread (B60 for a small loaf), sweet potato bread (B80 for a small loaf) and Earl Grey bread, which features in the indulgent The Earl of Grey (Earl Grey toast with vanilla ice cream and Earl Grey custard, B260). Other sweet picks include the Apple Bomb (B320)—a bread roll stuffed with a whole apple and cinnamon, served with custard sauce—along with "gashing" cheese tart (B80) and smoothies like banana cinnamon (B125), all dolled up like a freakshake with crumble and lots of cream. On the savory side, try the black Angus steak sandwich (B750) or smoked salmon open-face sandwich (B135).
Take a Bowl This Asian fusion restaurant takes over the daytime hours of Dark Bar’s all-white sister party venue Lightroom. Korean chefowner Miki Kim drew on her home-cooking background and

well-traveled past to start Kiki Made (2/F, Ekamai Mall, Sukhumvit Soi 63. www.fb.com/kikimademunchies) as a pop-up stall at events like Wonderfruit and Made by Legacy. Her offerings include hearty bowls of Soboro chicken nachos (Japanese-style stir-fried chicken with tomato salsa, yogurt and Thai-style seafood sauce, B250), house-cured kimchi pork rice (B250) and the vegetarian-friendly Korean eggplant rice (B250).
Fly Me to the Moon Tucked in a sub-street across from Bowonniwet temple, this small ice cream shop is the latest addition to Phra Sumen Road’s cafe scene. Over the Moon (365/20 Phra Sumen Rd., 087-673-6349) started life about two years ago as a market pop-up and pre-packaged ice cream service before finally opening this first shop. On top of classics like chocolate and vanilla, playful flavors include Three Kings (mango, passion fruit and dragon fruit), brown sugar with rum, and ginger citrus (ginger, lime and orange). A scoop starts at B59 while they also have sundaes (B99) and ice cream floats (from B69).
The 20-seater Little Bao in Hong Kong is always packed out. But now it's branched out for the first time with a considerably bigger American-style diner in Bangkok. Drawing on her American upbringing, chef May Chow offers a playful, fast food-inspired take on traditional Chinese fare. Beyond appetizers like lamb tartare with tofu skin chips (B360) and salted-yolk orange chicken (B220), the bao burgers are the real star here, stuffed with fillings like pork belly, crispy Sichuan chicken, fish tempura and shiitake tempeh (B240 each). Also don’t miss the ice-cream bao (B120), which feature Guss Damn Good’s creamy flavors sandwiched between golden fried buns. Exclusively for Citi credit cardmembers. Bunker may be familiar to fans of Eat Me (7th in Top Tables 2016). Both were designed by Kelly Wheatley; and Eat Me’s chef, Tim Butler, is one of Bunker’s backers. The kitchen, though, is helmed by Arnold Marcella, formerly head of The Elm in New York City and a protege of two-Michelinstar chef Paul Liebrandt. It was the hottest place in town when it opened back in March, and Bunker still feels like the right place to be. There are magazine editors, designers, people you recognize from fashion pages. But while at Eat Me they pack the tables so close together you’re bumping elbows with the diners next to you, here there’s an intimate spaciousness conjured by the brutalist concrete building’s many angles and alcoves, spread across three levels which all roll into one another. A palette of mustard and marine softens the whole thing, while slabs of brilliantly polished stone and copper-toned

as the sate ayam (chicken satay, B100/5 skewers). These plump skewers are slightly different to the Thai street treats, though, carrying an extra smoky flavor and coming smothered in a thicker peanut sauce. Adventurous souls can add a dollop of chili sambal for an extra, delicious hit. Some of the curries are reminiscent of Southern Thai flavors, too, such as the nasi ayam padang (B180), a quarter chicken in a yellow, turmeric-laden coconut curry. The standout beef rendang (B250) features chunks of fall-apart meat in a thick brown stew of coconut milk, star anise, cardamom and other spices. We also rate the pepe ikan (steamed fish wrapped in banana leaf and then grilled, B200), which is like a saltier, spicier hor mok with lovely, flaky fish. The back page of the menu is dedicated to Indonesian beverages, most of which can easily double as dessert, from the es kopi alpukat (avocado coffee shake, B120) to the es teler (avocado, jackfruit and other fruits in coconut milk, B90)—just beware, things get pretty sweet. With plenty to offer halal eaters and vegetarians (try the crisp and spicy perkedel jagung [corn fritters], B90), and more-than-affordable prices, Rasa Khas’ menu is one worthy of repeat excursions.

B angkok is home to an everdiversifying number of cuisines, but Southeast Asian restaurants remain inexplicably rare. First opened in 2013, Rasa Khas has built a steady following as the city’s best bet for a legit Indonesian meal. Earlier this year, it alarmed its fans by upping sticks from its Balinese bungalowinspired dwelling on Sukhumvit Soi 23, only to resurface again deep down Soi 22. Though not as exotic, the new shop-house home is no barebones affair, striking a pleasingly intimate mood through a combination of spare l i g h t i n g , g o rg e o u s p a t te r n e d wallpaper and a few bamboo and rattan touches. The thick menu spotlights heady dishes which make liberal use of spices shipped from Java. Some flavors are quite familiar, such
mirrors give it a luxurious edge. It feels special, which it should, because dinner here won’t be cheap. A meal for two that comes in at under B6,000 will be one of cautious ordering rather than happy abandon. The small plates are priced from B350 - 900, but Marcella’s food justifies it—fresh, simple, well-executed, original yet devoid of gimmicks. A salad of roasted baby carrots (B350) is packed with intriguing flavors and textures like yuzu cream and dumplings of basil and ricotta cheese; a veal agnolotti pasta (B450/900) is lifted by the mildly rich earthiness of sweetbread; a plate of beef tongue and snails (B425) is a delicate arrangement of chewy proteins spiked with garlic. Then there’s the wagyu short rib, which really is as good as you might have heard—a sticky, dense, smoky full-fat chunk of slow-cooked meat deserving of the word “marbled.” Get it to share and the B2,300 price tag will be as easy to swallow as those seven 1.5-inch-thick, melt-in-yourmouth slices of beef. Errors? None, really. Instead of bread you get these crisp things that aren’t as good as bread. Or crisps. But beyond that we’re struggling. Service is attentive and unintrusive, and the quality cocktail list is devised by Diageo World Class 2015 finalist Natakorn Changrew (try the Bourbon Maple Sour, B360). Dining at Bunker isn’t just fashionable; it’s properly good.
