Thai wagyu exists We can now reveal the secret behind Arno’s tender and flavorful local beef. Dry-aging only plays one part in why it tastes so good; the other is thanks to charolais, holstein or brahman cattle crossbred with either Japanese or Australian wagyu for a higher fat score and more tender meat than other local players. Goodbye UNCLE, hello Bar Savoy This was quick. Not even a month after the closure of UNCLE at 72 Courtyard, the mall has already filled the space with a new cocktail bar, named Bar Savoy. Here, it’ll be all about booze and music, which also means karaoke.

The South is getting a Tsunami museum Phangnga province is spending B64.8 million on building an outdoor museum in memory of the thousands of Tsunami victims who lost their lives back in 2004. It’ll be at the touristy Ban Nam Khem fishing village in Takua Pa district, where many people already visit to learn about the tsunami. Construction begins in 2017 and it’s expected to open in two years. Eddie Izzard is coming to Bangkok His Bangkok debut happens Feb 28 at K Bank Siam PicGanesha Theater with “Force Majeure,” a set that has toured extensively around the world since 2013. Best known for his comedy specials including Dress to Kill (which won a Primetime Emmy Award), Definite Article and Sexie, Izzard’s style involves stream-of-consciousness monologues that combine physical and observational comedy. See more at goo.gl/tKzlx2. Soho Hospitality is working on a new project The group who owns Above Eleven, Havana Social and Charcoal on Sukhumvit Soi 11 and Cantina in Ari is about to launch something new. What exactly? We don’t know. But it will be the fourth spot owned by Soho on Soi 11.

upfront HOT OR NOT
Hot: Pastiche
Not: Original design
We just did our yearly roundup of the biggest hotel openings of the year (see goo.gl/BD56LM). Among them are a place made to look like Canada in Chanthaburi, a French chateaux in Khao Yai, an English country house in Chiang Mai, and a Disney nightmare in Amphawa. We take back what we said about Thai hotel design here: goo.gl/wT0z7v
INTERVIEW
Hot: Michelin standards
Not: Mall standards
Jeez, you’re a tough lot to please. Open just a couple of weeks, already Jamie’s Italian has been given a royal Facebook beating. Pasta that’s not al dente, you say, carbonara that’s too creamy, you decry. Well, if chain Italian served in a mall’s not good enough for you, try checking out Eric Pras of Maison Lameloise at Le Normandie. Or Arnaud Donckele at La Scala (see page 12). Or Alain Passard at Issaya Cooking School (see page 8). Cost of entry? About B5,000 and rising.
Hot: Winter markets Not: The heat Finally, they’re here! One month behind schedule, Bangkok’s wintery extravaganzas of fairy lights, food stools and folk music are ready to make their appearance, complete with the daddy of the lot, Sansiri’s Winter Market Fest #4 (see page 6). Shame that as we write this the temperature’s pushing 30.
Hot: Marathons
Not: Fun runs
If you’ve been training really, really hard these past months, you can take part in the Bangkok Marathon 2017 this Feb 5 (and pray they bother measuring the distance this year). If you haven’t, you can join us at the 5km Color Run when it returns in April, complete with music festival and afterparty. No practice necessary.
THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID
4
One decade ago, Sumet “Lung Daeng” Pongkanpai, 53, and Namtan “Auan” Sophakij, 49, were homeless. Then they found a place to shelter at the Homeless Center Suwit Watnu in Bangkok Noi, a project funded by both the government and NGOs which helps homeless people with both accomodation and job opportunities. As they help out at a second homeless center on the outskirts of Bangkok (Phuttamonthon Sai 2), Daeng and Auan open up to BK about their newfound lives and self-sufficiency within the community. How did you become homeless? Auan: I literally had no home from the time I was born. My parents lived with relatives in Phetburi. I finally ran away to work in Bangkok when I was 19. I later became homeless when the contractor I worked for fired me as they didn’t want women workers. After that, I lived on the streets in Sanamluang on and off. Daeng: I was working with my brother in law in Ayutthaya before I injured my back from falling off a roof. I couldn’t walk for two years. I felt I was a burden to my sister’s family as they started fighting about me. When I was able to walk, I ran away from home and worked as a bus driver at a tour company for a couple of years before my back problem prevented me from driving. I couldn’t keep begging for small money from colleagues so I decided to stay at Sanamluang. I lost all my belongings on the first night when someone snatched them while I was asleep. I didn’t eat anything for two days until a homeless uncle shared his food and advised me on how to survive in Sanamluang by doing odd jobs—selling drinks, collecting plastic bottles, being an extra for movies. Why did you decide to join Bangkok Noi’s Homeless Center? Auan: People from the center invited us to stay at their place after officials shut Sanamluang to get rid of home-
less people in 2001. It was the rainy season so I decided to join. There I learned I had many homeless friends staying already. We would go out to work during the day and come back to sleep, saving money with the center. We became the first group of people chosen to buy homes under a project set up by the shelter. Daeng: It was a good decision for me as I had a pretty unstable mind back then. I had started talking to myself. The Bangkok Noi center taught me how to do a lot of jobs, including how to grow vegetables, which really helped guide me back on track. What does your work at the shelter consist of now? Auan: The center recently founded a limited partnership called Khon Rai Ban [Homeless People] LP, which puts its residents to work doing whatever jobs people hire us for, like building and demolition work. Others like me also do whatever they can to make money, such as selling scrap. Daeng: I take care of all the farming work at the project, such as growing vegetables and fishing in the pond. We just received live goats, chickens and ducks from Thonglor’s Root Garden when it closed down. Now we can produce eggs to sell to community members at a cheap price, then use that money to manage the farm, buying seeds and food for the poultry.
How much do you pay to stay at the home? Auan: I have to pay B700 a month for 30 years to pay for my B200,000 home. Do you dream of anything else? Auan: My dream has already come true. I never had a home. So I just wanted to prove that homeless people like me can become homeowners. As I’m part of the pilot project, my ambition now is to pay off my home and see the project succeed. If it fails, it means our homeless friends who are still waiting to buy homes won’t have this chance again. Even if I die before finishing my payments, my fellows at the first homeless center will still get this house and can continue the dream. Daeng: I’m just proud of my journey. I’ve come from a person with zero human dignity to someone who can walk into government offices and talk to ministers and officials about homeless people’s rights and what we want to achieve. Though my family want me back, I still want to work with homeless people in this community. Now I dream that the new homeless center in Chiang Mai will also be a success. The government already passed the budget to build it, which includes everything from a library to play rooms and living space. Interview by Monruedee Jansuttipan

Banh Mi Bo
This new fine-dining spot for Thonglor will set up shop near Rabbit Hole bar, where American chef Riley Sanders is already testing out experimental new dishes for the restaurant. The uni toast, for example, bursts with flavors of shoyu, brown butter, roast garlic and slices of kaffir lime leaf. Set to open by the end of February.
The banh mi specialist is leaving its current space for a bigger home. They will close down the Sukhumvit Soi 33/1 shop in February and reopen on the main Sukhumvit Road (between Soi 30/1 and 32) in April. It will still stick to a takeaway concept but with more space to sit and longer operation hours.
Khao
Chilito
The chef’s table-only Thai restaurant Khao will close down its current venue on Sukhumvit Soi 51 and move to a bigger project. Chef Vichit Mukura’s new spot sits on almost one rai of land on Ekkamai Soi 10, where he’ll serve chef’s table dinners and an a la carte menu as well as run a cooking school. Set to open in Sep-Oct.
The people behind Farmfactory salad joint are presenting a new Mexican fast food venture. Expect the likes of burrito bowls and nachos to hit Silom Complex sometime in January.
Arno’s Bistro
They’re calling it a ”co-living space,” a combination of a co-working space, kid’s playground, and design, art and book shops. But we’re most excited about the F&B openings from big names like Rocket, The Raw Bar, Broccoli Revolution, Peppina and Paris Mikki. Siwilai will also expand on the 5th floor with a dining and drinking complex, though details remain sketchy.
The Arno’s name is known for exceptional dry-aged beef. Following on from the original butchery and steak restaurant, French chefbutcher Arnaud Carre recently opened a burger place not so far away on Narathiwas Road. For his next project in the same ‘hood, he opens a French bistro with a nice wine list in Suan Phlu, expected in the first quarter of 2017.

OTHER FOODIE HAPPENINGS
Chang Chui Thonburi hipsters are about to get a brand new creative hub. Taking over a large 11-rai plot on Sirindhorn Road, the 18 separate buildings of Chang Chui are all made from reused materials. Projects include a theater that will host performances by Pichet Klunchun and other renowned artists, a cinema that will accommodate screenings by the Documentary Club, as well as workshop spaces and art galleries. Another highlight is an old disused plane, which will carry the owner’s private collection of stuffed animals under a Noah’s Ark theme and also feature a restaurant-slash-bar by the Seven Spoons team. Set to open in February.

Park Hyatt
Veeraporn Nitiprapha’s SEA Write award-winning debut novel gets the film treatment from some of the biggest names in the business this year. The director will be none other than Pen-Ek Ratanaruang (Last Life in the Universe, Funbar Karaoke) and the screenplay will come from Kongdej Jaturanrasamee (P-047, Tang Wong). Exploring the idea that people are blinded by modern world values, the novel tells the story of a cheating father and a mother who never hugs her daughter again after finding out about his affair. Filming will start in March.
Born in Chiang Mai (and where Owen Wilson stayed when he was in town shooting 2015’s No Escape), 137 Pillars began as a hotel revamp of an old colonial villa. The new Bangkok property features 34 guest suites as well as 179 private residences on Sukhumvit Soi 39. Opening in February, its room rates will start at B4,500.
Park Hyatt The finishing touch to Central Embassy shopping mall takes residence in the Amanda Levete-designed building’s spiraling tower. Having fallen behind schedule by over two years, Park Hyatt is finally almost ready, and committed to an opening date of April. We can’t show you the interiors just yet, but knowing they’re done by New York’s hotel design power duo Yabu Pushelberg, we’re sure they’ll look just lovely.
MahaNakhon
Edition Edition is Marriott’s boutique brand conceived by legendary hotelier Ian Schrager—the first guy to ever coin the phrase “boutique hotel.” Bangkok’s Edition has been long-anticipated, opening next year as part of the ultra-luxe MahaNakhon Tower development at Chong Nonsi. There are only four others in the world right now, all glamorously well detailed and frighteningly expensive.

PHUKET
Spa with a View After unveiling new farm-to-table restaurant Pru (see goo.gl/mGkQDy), pool villa-only resort Trisara (www.trisara.com) has renamed, renovated and relaunched its spa. Jara’s six villa-like spa rooms offer four different signature mixed oils and what they dub a “Thai thermal massage,” which features a clay pot filled with heated Himalayan salt and incorporates elements of meditation. The five-hour Jara Local treatment includes a Thai herbal scrub and wrap, Thai thermal massage, Thai stretching (Rue Sri Dat Ton) and walking meditation by Buddhist monks—yours for B15,500 (or B30,000 per couple). Other options include the 90-minute Royal Trisara six-hand massage, which combines Thai and Swedish massage techniques at B14,900. We recommend requesting a sea-view spa room.
Room for Two Phuket Town’s latest boutique hotel, 2Rooms Boutique House (076 354 335, goo.gl/DiQfTO), is a hipster’s dream— and it offers only two rooms. Yes, that’s right. Designed and owned by Phuket's Dhamarchitects, those rooms are situated on the second floor of a 100-yearold twin shop-house on Soi Rommanee that was formerly an old-school coffee shop. The Sino-Portuguese shop-house stands out not only for its bright pink facade, but also its relatively shallow nature compared to others in the area. The large, suite-like rooms consist of dark blue walls, king bed and breezy balcony. What they lack in the way of a TV, they make up for with a turntable and a set of vinyl records from the likes of The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel and The Rolling Stones. Downstairs you’ll find popular dessert cafe Torry’s Ice cream. The current opening promotion sees rates slashed 30 percent from B3,000 to B2,100.
CHIANG MAI
Creative Mapping The team behind TEDx Chiang Mai, Creative Chiang Mai (CCM, www.creativechiangmai. com) continues to promote the Northern capital as a creative city with the second edition of its Chiang Mai Creative Mapping. The 200-page guide covers all the city’s key creative and cultural organizations, groups, spaces and assets. It’s bilingual (Thai and English) and the print version is available for B200 at the Science and Technology Park Chiang Mai University (STeP). You can also download the guide for free via goo.gl/dK8WpN.
CHINA
Sleep with the Fairies The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jiuzhaigou National Park, dubbed Northern China’s Fairyland, has just welcomed a new high-end hotel, Banyan Tree Jiuzhaigou (goo.gl/Mb69Xe). Set on a hill facing a stunning landscape of limestone terraces, the 209-room hotel takes its design inspiration from the Qiang, a 3,000-year-old ethnic minority group in Tibet. The result is a combination of clean lines and intricate embroidered details. On top of an 18-hole golf course set at an altitude of over 2,000 meters, the hotel also consists of five restaurants and bars, as well as a spa offering unique treatments using local ingredients such as sweet cherry, chuan bei and tian ma. A garden room costs CNY1,600 (B8,290), while the stunning panoramic suite is CNY3,100 (B16,061) and presidential suite is CNY32,200 (B166,827).

Citrus Fresh Bangkok’s most popular onsen, Yunomori, has welcomed winter with a limited-edition yuzu bath. Available now through Jan 19, 2017, the yuzu yu reportedly boasts the healing qualities of its namesake Japanese citrus fruit. It’s been introduced to coincide with the winter solstice (Dec 22), a time when many Japanese people believe that bathing in a hot yuzu bath will repel winter diseases. The cloudy-textured yuzu bath is said to be particularly good for rejuvenating maturing skin owing to the high level of citric acid and vitamin C. Unlimited onsen remains B450 per person. Plug in and try your hand at shooting games, horror simulators and culinary challenges. Though HTC Vive is the main system on offer, they do have Oculus and Playstation VR systems, too. The price is B650 for the first hour, and goes down to B550 for every hour after that. REALLY THAI
Gong Xi Fa Cai!
Do Chinese New Year properly with this old-school guide of where to visit and what to eat on Yaoworat Road this Jan 28.
Chinatown
The Gate of Chinatown
Join the Luck Club Start your Chinese New Year morning with blessings from the gods at Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, also known as the Dragon Temple (Mangkorn Rd. Open daily 6am-6pm). At Bangkok’s most important Chinese temple, you’ll find statues of nearly 60 Chinese gods. The most popular is Tai Suay Eia or Cai Shen, the god of wealth or god of fortune. This year, it’s believed especially important for people born in the years of the rabbit, rat and horse to ward of bad fortune. You can buy worship sets from the temple at B100 each.
Give to the Poor Next, take a stroll over to Plab Pla Chai Road to another shrine, Tai Hong Kong Shrine (Pubplachai Rd. Open daily 6am-6pm). This is where the Por Tek Tung Foundation began, a charity which takes donations to buy coffins for the poor. It’s believed that doing so will reduce your misfortune and bring luck your way. Some people even go to the extreme of worshipping at nine shrines in one day, as the Thai word for nine, kao, is akin to the word kaona, meaning progress.
Eat for Good Luck When it comes to lunch, eating on Chinese New Year is about more than just food. You have to choose dishes made with ingredients that are filled with meaning. Noodles, for example, are meant to bring you long life. We recommend checking out old-school Teochew restaurants like Tang Jai Yoo (85-89 Soi Yaowapanich, Yaowarat Road., opposite Hua Seng Heng Gold shop, 02-2242167, 02-224-2172. Open daily 11am-2pm, 5-10pm) and Yim Yim (or Jim Jim) restaurant (89 Padsai Rd., behind Hua Seng Hong gold shop. Open daily 11am-2pm, 5pm-10pm). Both serve fine suckling pig and egg noodles with braised goose feet—lucky (and delicious) food criteria for this year. If you find both of them shut, Hua Seng Hong (371-373 Yaowarat Rd., 02-222-7053. Open daily 9am-1am) is a 40-year-old eating spot guaranteed to be open every day, just like The Canton House (530 Yaowarat Rd., 092-249-8299. Open daily 11am-10pm), where they serve a mix of Thai and Chinese dishes.
Hua Seng Hong
Rediscover Chinatown’s Golden History In the afternoon, hide from the sun in the air-con comfort of temple-slash-museum Wat Traimitr Wittayaram (661 Charoenkrung Rd. Open Tue-Sun 8am-5pm. Free entry for Thais and B100 for foreigners). This sacred space isn’t just home to the world’s largest golden Buddha image but also houses the Yaowarat Chinatown Heritage Centre on the second floor. Leave with Good Fortune End your day at the Gate of Chinatown, a giant red gate right at the start of Yaowarat Road that is considered the road’s dragon head. It was built to celebrate the 60th anniversary celebrations of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's accession to the throne in 2006. The gate’s location and construction followed feng shui rules, so every one of its elements is imbued with meaning, from the lion couple statues said to bring prosperity, to the golden plates built to absorb power from the gods.

The US-hailing Huy Fong Sriracha sauce is finally available for purchase here in Bangkok. While the name is familiar, the popular hot sauce recognizable by its rooster logo and signature green cap is not to be confused with the local variation, though both take their name from the Sriracha region of Eastern Thailand. Created by a Vietnamese native who migrated to the US, the so-called "rooster sauce" is often characterized by its hot and sour taste (owing to Californian red jalapenos) as opposed to its sweeter Thai counterpart. The sauce is now available on Lazada.co.th at B155 for a 266ml bottle and B215 for a 435ml bottle. According to the importer, you’ll soon find it at supermarkets, too. See more at www.fb.com/Sriracha.Sauce.Thailand.
This Jan 9-14, La Scala welcomes French chef Arnaud Donckele of the three-Michelin-starred La Vague d’Or restaurant in Saint-Tropez. Now 39 years old, the chef’s past includes training with some of France’s top culinary names, including Michel Guerard and Alain Ducasse. In 2013, Donckele was named Chef of the Year by Le Chef Magazine when he became the youngest chef ever awarded three stars by Michelin. His artfully plated, Mediterranean cuisine includes the likes of pasta filled with black truffle, foie gras and purple artichoke prepared three ways. Set lunch B4,200; dinner B8,500. Hidden behind two low-key entrances, Tokyo-hailing yakitori restaurant Tori Tama sits adjacent to Ekkamai’s newest sake bar Orihara Shoten. Sit on the sizable counter and see the chefs grilling all parts of a chicken, from neck, heart (B80) and liver (B100) to breast, wing, achilles tendon (B120) and tail (B80). They highly recommend the very end of hen's tail (called misaki, B80), which combines the part's fattiness with skin crispiness. There are also other meat and vegetable skewers as well as salad, soup and rice bowls on offer. A long list of sake curated from the next door sake bar is available from B180/ glass. Jamie’s Italian The British TV star expands his Italian chain to Bangkok. The buzz: Jamie Oliver is one of Britain’s most-celebrated of celebrity chefs. The personality behind numerous cooking shows and best-selling UK cookbooks is known for fusing British and Italian cuisine, and now runs five restaurant brands. This one is all about comforting Italian cuisine in a casual setting. The decor: The restaurant follows a standardized, contemporary-rustic format—heavy on the wood and grunge metal textures. The vast space carries three sizable counters in two zones. An antipasti station and a drink table sit on the right, where the dining room is exposed to natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows. There's also a kitchen counter on the more closed side, giving diners a peek of the kitchen. You can also grab some Jamie Oliver cookbooks and souvenirs from a shopping stand.
14
The food: Devised by both Oliver and his mentor, Italian chef Gennaro Contaldo, the menu is all about comfort food. If you've ever eaten at any of Jamie's other branches, you'll recognize the familiar menu. The playful antipasti plate comes served atop tomato cans, with both meat (from B590) and vegetarian (B490) options. The in-house-made pasta gets cooked into the likes of prawn linguine (B300), penne arrabbiata (B250) and tagliatelle Bolognese (B280), while pizza starts at B310. Mains are unambitious but comforting. A 12oz rib-eye steak sets you back B1,490 and comes with wild mushrooms, gremolata (a chopped herb condiment), balsamic onions and chips. Don’t miss the chocolate brownie with amaretto ice cream (B230) or panna cotta (B210) for dessert.
The drinks: The bar makes classic cocktails with twists, including the Jamie’s Mojito (with Martini Bianco vermouth and prosecco, B300) and Gennaro’s Sidecar (with limoncello, B300). Wine starts at B225 by the glass while there are also some Italian beers like Menabrea (B280) and Birra Roma Ambrata (B320). Why you should care: Jamie’s is already taking an online knocking, especially for service. Our experience was of food above your average mall offerings in an inviting space. Go test it for yourself and make your own mind up. Natcha Sanguankiattichai G/F, Siam Discovery, Rama 1 Rd., 02-255-5222. Open daily noon-10pm. BTS Siam/National Stadium

Flipping Good The team behind Audrey restaurant group has launched a new pancake cafe. But it’s not about your familiar American or Japanese style pancakes. Poff (4/F, Siam Center, Rama 1 Rd. BTS Siam) takes its name from mini poffertje pancakes, a light and spongy kind traditional to Dutch cuisine. Here they serve them both savory and sweet in classic flavors of sugar powder (B60), cheddar cheese and crispy bacon (B135), among others. You can also opt for the filled variety: cheesy lava charcoal pancake (B125) or stretchy mozzarella (B125). Our pick has to be Nutella on the Rocks (with Nutella, crumbles, marshmallow and nuts, B135). They also offer the likes of apple cider soda drinks (B75).

Pizza and Pasta Singapore-originated Mont Calzone (Habito Mall, Sukhumvit Soi 77, 096-226-2246) presents fusion dishes in line with some straight Thai and Italian fare. Among 20 pasta choices lie classics like carbonara (B250) and arrabbiata (spicy tomato sauce, B180), as well as Thai-inspired green curry (B280) and tom yum (380) pastas, and even a Singapore-inspired sambal chili sauce with garlic (B320). Pizza and calzone (folded pizza) start from B250 while there are also appetizers like truffle fries (B180) and calamari (B180) on offer. Natcha Sanguankiattichai

Boon Tong Kee HHHH Singaporean. 1/F, The Up Community Mall, 54/5 Narathiwat-Ratchanakarin Rd., 02-119-4515. Open daily 11am-11pm. B-BB. F
Around for nearly 40 years, Singapore’s Boon Tong Kee is legendary for its Hainanese chicken rice (khao mun gai). After arriving on our shores two years ago, the first Bangkok branch at the unassuming Up community mall on Narathiwas-Ratchanakarin Road is still packed most nights with Chinese-Thai families and groups of friends clambering around the lazy Susan-topped round tables. The clatter of spoons and chopsticks almost drowns out the traditional Chinese soundtrack, while newspaper clippings and pictures of star dishes add some life to the cream walls. To be honest, you’re not really coming here for the ambience. Thankfully, we have nothing but praise for the signature boiled chicken (B90-590), which is a faithful rendition of the Singapore

version; that means, wonderfully plump chicken atop aromatic, not-too-greasy rice and a powerful ginger and chili dipping sauce. It’s worth the visit alone, but the menu also packs plenty more old-school staples. The sambal kang kong (stir-fried morning glory with sambal sauce, B160) expertly combines the heavy notes of shrimp paste with greens that are fresh and crunchy. The “Imperial” pork ribs (B200) feature a slightly burnt and crispy exterior, while their juicy flavor is so dense the ribs demand to be eaten with a side of rice. Other dishes are not quite as rewarding, like the super-soft, custard-like crispy beancurd (B160), which is overpowered by an unnecessary mayonnaise. The stirfried beef with oyster sauce (B220), too, tastes slightly diluted and overly chewy, though we like the thin slices of ginger to cut through the oil. Similarly, the bualoy haeng (glutinous rice balls coated with ground peanuts, B50) taste unbalanced: too sweet and too crunchy. If you’re after an unpretentious taste of Chinese staples, look no further than this Singaporean import. Given the ease with which the kitchen nails the classics, it’s no surprise Boon Tong Kee is now up to four Bangkok branches and counting (including one at Sukhumvit Soi 49’s Piman 49 complex).

Compared to the blaring live music, tinsel and strobes of Habesha (now closed), Ethiopian Restaurant used to provide Bangkok’s more sober Ethiopian dining experience—less basement disco, more auntie’s dining room. That’s not so much the case now they’ve added neon green and blue lighting and a bass-heavy soundsystem pumping out Ethiopian pop, but what hasn’t changed is the bold flavors of the food. If you’re new to the cuisine, Ethiopian is all about big sharing portions and eating with your hands. Dishes— mostly rich, condensed stews (or wat) flavored with a chili, cumin and garlicheavy spice mix called berbere—all come served atop injera, an unstoppably moreish fermented flatbread with a distinctly sour flavor. Simply rip from the outside in and scoop up the wat as you go. Portions are vast, making the B300-400 price tags of most meat dishes (injera included) a

bargain when spread between 2-3 people. Sample a full range of the cuisine with an Ethiopia Meat Combo (B450), which along with two wat (one of stewed chicken leg, the other minced beef) comes with sauteed beef, lamb alicha (a lighter stew not featuring berbere), stewed chickpea and a simple Ethiopian salad of lettuce, tomato, pepper and onion in a sharp vinegar dressing—all served on top of injera, of course. Though not as hot as some Ethiopian food we’ve encountered, it’s still a powerful amalgamation of flavors and spices that’ll linger on your fingers long after the meal is over. Criticisms? The tough centerpiece chicken leg is less exciting than the rich mincedmeat stews that surround it, and thanks to the abundant use of berbere, many dishes can taste quite same-y. On our last visit, we also didn’t see any of the collared greens (gomen) or cottage cheese (ayib) which the menu promised. Still, the powerful collection of rich spices and more injera than we can bear finishing make for one satisfying experience. Non-meateaters are well taken care of thanks to an abundance of similarly spiced vegetarian stews and salads—try the timatim fitfit (B150), which sees the standard Ethiopian salad blended with powerful amounts of fresh chili and shredded injera. And make sure you finish the meal on an intensely strong Ethiopian coffee, which comes served amid smoking incense with a snack of toasted barley.

Jelly Rocket's new single revives '80s synth-pop in all its cheesy glory Bangkok-based all-girl dream-pop trio Jelly Rocket are back with a first taste from the forthcoming debut album, Lucid Dream. New single "This is Real" revives '80s synth-pop in all its cheesy glory thanks to girly, loved-up-lyrics, cooing vocals and searing synth lines. And we mean cheesy. Sample lyrics (anyone over the age of 25 turn away now): "I think I’m falling for you. With your eyes…Oh you make me so high..." However, despite these words seemingly torn from a teen girl's Tumblr (note: the band members aren't much older), we can't help but fall for the song's dynamic arrangement and numerous hooks. Highpitched guitar helps cut through some of the keyboard cheesiness, too. Catch them live at the album launch on Jan 4 (see left). Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj
