A checklist of BK Magazine’s most important discoveries this week That K-pop fans hate Woody K-pop fans directed the hashtag #WorstHostOfTheYear at talkshow superstars Woody Milintajinda and Patcharasri “Kalamae” Benjamas following last week’s grand opening of Show DC, a new Korea-themed megamall-slash-theater near RCA. The pair were brought in as hosts for the night, but their jokes about K-pop fans and plastic surgery didn’t go down too well with the audience of, well, K-pop fans. Kalamae even asked the fans, “do you even have proper jobs?” Coming from an event MC, that’s harsh. That Hotel Art Fair returns in June One of the city’s coolest art initiatives, which gathers the best artists and art galleries around the country to transform the rooms of a hotel into a pop-up art space, is returning for another year. This time, it’ll all be happening at Volve Hotel across the weekend of June 23-25. Never heard of Volve Hotel? Us neither, but it’s apparently on Sukhumvit Soi 53 and will be jam packed with goods from Maiiam Contemporary Art Museum, Atta Gallery, Gallery Seescape, Gallery Ver and more. Watch this space for updates. That Phrom Phong’s new terrace is the perfect spot for after-work beers That gigantic Marriott hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 22 has introduced a new alfresco spot in front of its Goji Kitchen + Bar buffet—and it’s quite a hidden gem. Since it’s located round the back of the hotel, you’d never actually see it from Soi 22, but that also means it gets some great views over Benjasiri Park—really, the views from out here look more like a residential part of Taipei than Bangkok. That Bangkok’s backpacking beggars are breaking international news If you’ve been shopping around Siam or Silom recently, you’ve probably run into the odd elephant-pant wearing human statue or two begging for cash to fund their travels. And the rest of the world has noticed too. Newspapers from the Sun to the Daily Telegraph have united in a universal facepalm. Our question: who’s giving them any money?

Hot: Tanks
Not: Public spending
Here are a few things B7 billion will buy you instead of 38 Chinese tanks: 1) 14 years of free lunches for primary school students; 2) 1,000 new public buses; 3) an 18.5% increase in yearly public health spending; 4) 24 million ginseng-infused negronis at Chinatown’s hottest new bar, Ba Hao (see page 23). This is the kind of stuff Prayuth just doesn’t know.

If you long for the days when Opposite was reinventing the bao, Beervana was introducing us to craft beer, and New Balance were the only kicks anybody wore, then head to WTF this weekend. The original galleryslash-bar celebrates its seventh anniversary with a three-day block party sure to excite everyone who stopped partying about five years ago. We can’t wait. See page 26.

Hot: Fining journalists Not: Fine journalism Someone who knows about this sort of stuff tells us that, once the junta gets its way and makes all journalists carry government-issued licences, it’ll mean two years in the slammer and/or a B60,000 fine for those who don’t have one. We take back what we just said about Prayuth not knowing craft cocktail prices.
Hot: Britney

Pssst… we’ll let you in on a little secret. Well, not really a secret, more an unsubstantiated rumor. But there is this one photo on BEC-Tero’s website that suggests Britney Spears might be playing here when her tour drops by Asia this June. If it does turn out to be true, let’s hope Thaiticketmajor doesn’t sell tickets to imaginary seats like at Coldplay. Not that we’ll be sitting down anyway.

The recent announcement of a massive new development where the Suan Lum Night Bazaar used to sit isn’t the only big upcoming project in Central Bangkok. Here’s a look at how the city is about to change. The reinvention of the Suan Lum Night Bazaar News recently dropped that the 104rai space on the corner of Wireless and Rama 4 roads that once housed the popular Suan Lum Night Bazaar is soon to become a new mixed-used space called One Bangkok. The billionaire tycoon behind Chang beer, Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, is heading a deal valued at around B120 billion to convert the neighborhood into Thailand’s biggest mixed-use development when it opens in 2021. For perspective, the mixed-use real estate development which Dusit Thani recently announced (see below) on the other side of the street is worth B36.7 billion, while Thailand’s tallest building, MahaNakhon, is worth around B20 billion. What we’re trying to say is, One Bangkok will be on-another-level massive. The total area of land is almost one-third the size of Lumphini Park. Charoen has plans for five office towers, five luxury hotels, three residential towers, plus plenty of retail space, art and culture facilities. In total, it’s expected to hold more than 60,000 people, with 50 rai of the area earmarked for green space. The New Dusit Thani megaproject Bangkok will soon lose another historic modernist building, with the Dusit Thani hotel—as we know it— to officially close as of June 2018. The hotel has confirmed operations will continue as normal until Jun 30
2018, after which the building will be demolished to create a “mixeduse” complex, including a renovated hotel, serviced apartments, office space, retail space and dedicated green space. A partnership with Central Group, the mixed-use real estate development is worth B36.7 billion (about US$1.05 billion). The hotel has also reiterated that this is not the “closure” of Dusit Thani, but rather a reconstruction to introduce a new version of the hotel. Built in 1970, Dusit Thani represents a charming blend of vernacular (gilded mosaics, pointed arches) and mid-century modern architecture. Since The Siam Intercontinental was razed to make way for Siam Paragon, the Dusit has become one of the last remaining hotels of the sort. The Indra Hotel on Ratchaprarop Road is another, but is not nearly as well preserved, surrounded as it is by billboards and telephone lines. Chulalongkorn’s giant plans for Samyan Last Mar 26, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn officially opened CU Centenary Park—the first stage in Chula’s grand reinvention plans for Samyan (the area stretching from BTS National Stadium to MRT Sam Yan). The 30-rai green space is the centerpiece for a huge redevelopment of the 290-rai Samyan neighborhood. Ambitious and civil-minded but with plenty of commercial space too, the project is proving a focal point for those who
would like to see Bangkok step away from high-rise developments and malls, and towards long-term urban planning. But the total project isn’t all parks and exhibits. While 30 rai (roughly one-tenth Lumphini Park’s size) is dedicated to CU Centenary Park, another 40 rai has been allotted to Samyan Mitr Town—a shopping mall, office space and 554-room condominium. The opening follows Suan Pa Benjakitti, a 61-rai extension to Benjakitti Park that opened unofficially late last year. The long-delayed makeover of the corner of Silom and Rama 4 roads In Aug 2015, it was announced that the corner opposite the Dusit Thani hotel, where the derelict Silom Center still stands, would be developed into another megamall and cinema. Since then, there have been no developments about what looked like a transformative project for the area. We contacted one of the main developers behind the project, Property Perfect, who had no updates to give us about what will be happening. The project, which was slated to incorporate retail and office space, and be connected to the Sala Daeng BTS walkway, came as part of a wave of announcements from Property Perfect and We Retail PCL that related to huge-scale developments across the city. The company also would not give comment about its plans for a big development for Asoke junction. BK Staff

W
hile other major cities in the region are putting more investment into their own creative projects, from Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei to PMQ in Hong Kong and M50 in Shanghai, Bangkok is about to up its own game with these soon-to-open new developments that cater to the ever-growing creative crowd. Here’s what we can expect.
BANGKOK’S GIANT NEW CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM IS ALMOST READY
RUNGSIMA KASIKRANUNG, Project Manager, Warehouse 30 What is the objective behind this new space? It’s a part of a non-profit collaboration between us, The Jam Factory, TCDC, Bangkok River Partners and Serindia [gallery], among others, to create a creative district. There are many creative businesses and activities between Bangrak and Klongsan, and it would be great if we could drive this further to create a real creative district and community. We want to be the first thing that comes to mind when people think of where to go. I don’t want people to just think of Thonglor.
Warehouse 30 Expected launch date: Mid-May, 2017 Taking the same approach as he did with the Jam Factory, Duangrit Bunnag (one of the original founders of TCDC and the country’s most -famous architect) has transformed a 4,000-sq-meter space of abandoned World War 2-era warehouses in Charoenkrung Soi 30 into Warehouse 30. Two of the warehouses will become a co-working space called OneBig. House, operated by FabCafe. Duangrit’s minimalist fashion brand, Lonely Two Legged Creatures, will get its own flagship store, where you can also take a sneak peek at the designers working on their creative patterns. F&B is taken care of in the next warehouse, with tenants like Summer cocktail and wine bar, managed by the team behind The Never Ending Summer, as well as Moon Taste (remember the yummy soups and paninis at The Knack Market?) and a roaster cafe developed by Li-Bra-Ry, highlighted by its own vintage roaster right in the middle of the space.
Next door is an open market that features Casa Lapin Lux’s beautiful flower shop Wallflower, a home decor and design item zone curated by Warehouse 30’s own project manager, Rungsima Kasikranung, and a motorbike enthusiasts’ accessories store called 8080 Rubber. The last two warehouses make up the Open market zone, which will feature an 80-seat screening room operated by the Documentary Club, a design and architecture-centric independent bookstore by Candide, a retail shop by Copperwired, a vinyl music corner, a raw juice bar called Raw & Real and an eco-friendly organic corner selling locally sourced fruits and vegetables, superfoods and biodegradable products. Another 20 sq meters of the space have been left as a multi-purpose area which the owners will hire out for activities, workshops and art exhibitions. We also discovered there will be a small cyclist hostel for travelers at the back, and a French bakery/cafe serving the pastry goodness of Maison Chatenet.
This is an old part of town. Was it difficult integrating with the community around here? Being able to create awareness of what we’re doing and what we’re trying to achieve will ensure that everyone in the area benefits. Many shop owners in the surrounding area had their concerns too—one approached me and actually asked if she’d be pushed out of business. There’s a lot of community spirit around here and we want all stakeholders to feel like they own the space. They can benefit and flourish from our project as well. It sounds a lot like the Jam Factory. In a way, you could say that it’s a sister of The Jam Factory. But I was given a lot of curatorial freedom to build Warehouse 30 in a way that has its own character. For instance, even if you can find furniture and home decor here, it won’t be anything like Anyroom on the other side of the river. The co-working space will be different. With Documentary Club, we have a lot of activities planned that go beyond just film screenings. The space is totally open for new ideas—for theater, dance shows—all sorts of events. Who is the main target audience? Interestingly, our market segment has changed quite a bit over the years. It could be anyone of any age, as long as they’re interested in the sort of content that we bring: the design, the lifestyle elements that we bring, the sociallyconscious and environmentally-friendly concepts that we stand for.
Bangkok's brand new B3.7 billion Thailand Cultural Centre on Ratchadaphisek Road has just finished construction. Designed by A49 Architects, the project features what is intended to be the country's first major publicly owned museum dedicated to contemporary art. Called the Asean Cultural Gateway, the project is of colossal importance to the Thai art world. The ministry owns over 700 contemporary artworks, and, in the last year, the Office of Contemporary Art Department, along with Cultural Ministry's office, put a lot of money into expanding that collection. Though the project has now finished building (one year later than scheduled), it remains uncertain when the museum will open to the public (as well as exactly which works will feature inside).

cover story Thailand Creative and Design Centre Expected launch date: May 5, 2017 The brand-new TCDC takes over a space adjacent to the 80-year-old building that was once the Bangkok General Post Office. In a similar vein as the previous TCDC, we can expect regular talks, meetings and workshops. Ensuring that creative design ideas get turned into reality, prototypes can now be made right there at a brand-new co-working space-slash-design-lab, fully equipped with tools like 3D printing, in collaboration with FabCafe. The hub of Charoenkrung’s drive to become a creative district, the space will cater to everyone involved in the creative economy, from filmmakers to animators, SMEs to start-ups. TCDC members who have been utilizing other co-working spaces around the city will also gladly welcome the return of the resource center. While a lot of us may think of TCDC as a co-working space, the new TCDC will actually put a heavy emphasis on incubation programs and business consultation by experts to assist entrepreneurs with their business ideas, fostering a creative ecosystem.
Chang Chui: Thailand Tomorrow Expected launch date: Late May, 2017
KITTIRAT PITIPANICH, Vice Director, TCDC How will the new TCDC build on the original TCDC at The Emporium? Our vision has always been ambitious, but the space at Emporium was in many ways limited. TCDC held design exhibitions to inspire; it had a library—what we called the “resource center”— and we also held workshops and seminars so that new ideas can get generated. But it lacked space to turn these ideas into reality—making the product or a prototype, implementing the ideas and executing them. Now we have doubled the amount of space, the ecosystem will hopefully be more complete. There’s a proper co-working space now, which is also a “maker space” where people can brainstorm and work together to build something new. What’s the main objective of TCDC now? People used to see us as a co-working space because they liked the resource center, it was cheap and conveniently located by the BTS, but actually our core mission has always been to help creative businesses and support the country’s creative economy. We want to help assist in researching and identifying new opportunities for people that come to us. We’re also doing more policy development to push design and technology curriculums from primary school level up to universities, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
6
How hard is it then to pilot a “creative district”? We don’t want to be a standalone destination, but part of a district that celebrates creativity—that’s the idea of Co-Create Charoenkrung—to curate an experience that’s interesting, fun and full of eye-opening creative businesses, be it art galleries or performance venues. If you think about it, creative people will tend to live near each other because you need to be in a space that inspires you and helps you learn. For example, the area around Wat Umong in Chiang Mai has become a hub for creatives—there’s not much pollution and a lot of coffee shops, galleries and bookstores. So we want to help creative businesses around here turn into a district, and hopefully a city. What’s the future for TCDC? The space is very beautiful with a lot of history, but how to get the public here is the main difficulty. Accessibility will be a challenge for sure as we now have to focus on how to become a destination, not just a place where people pass by. We thought about having a TCDC shuttle boat from BTS Taksin, but the CAT pier isn’t open for public use for security reasons. So we’ll have to work on that. As for our other projects, there’s also something called AISDC that’s coming up. In fact it’s taken over the old space at The Emporium to become a design center operated by us. We’re going to open a TCDC in Khon Kaen, and the Ministry of Commerce has also given us an allotted plot of land in Hat Yai, so hopefully we’ll be able to see it through within 2018.
Somchai Songwattana, CEO and art director of Thailand’s pioneering fashion brand FlyNow has turned an 11-rai plot land in Thonburi district into a new creative space that hopes to celebrate the work of young artists and designers. A mesh of 18 separate buildings, “Chang Chui” lives up to its name (it means “sloppy artisan” in Thai) with each structure being made from reused materials. It will include a theater to host performances by renowned artists such as Pichet Klunchun and a cinema powered by the Documentary Club; and a creative space-slash-library run by the team from Ma.D Hub called Ma Chui. Some of the stores lined up include Happening Shop, Pizza Pazza, Reco Room, The’ Tea House, The Farm Shop and Sheepshank, all curated by Somchai himself. Another highlight is the disused, Lockheed TriStar airplane, which will double as an art space exhibiting artefacts and antiques that Somchai has collected over 30 years under a Noah’s Ark theme called Na-Oh. We also learned from the team that there’s going to be a restaurant called Insects in the Backyard, as well as a music center called Chang Chuem that will connect music students and veteran artists from around the city, doubling as a performance space.
CHANOKPORN THINPHANGNGA, Project Manager, Chang Chui What’s the idea of a “living gallery”? People have this perception that an art gallery has to be a plain space, but this is not going to be conventional. For example, our restaurant is also a gallery of its own. So the architecture is also important—Insects in the Backyard will be like a secret world. It’s always there in the backyard but you never really notice until you seek it out. It’ll be innovative and fun—like being in a fantasy jungle with lots of funky components. Take Ma Chui, for instance. It’s an art gallery as well as a co-working space. There’ll be installation art, antique furniture, artwork by local artists. You can sleep, work, sit, read, find inspiration or just enjoy being in the space.
How do you curate the stores and outlets involved at Chang Chui? It’s all about cross functionality—be it our restaurants, barbershop, co-working space or even a stall selling clothes. But every component has to have some sort of creativity involved. We’re not limiting the sort of work or creative industry to utilize the space here at all. We also want to support young artists so that they have a platform to present their creations to the world, be it music, art or design. We have 120 rental units that range from 6-100 sq meters, so the younger crowd that may not have much funding can afford their own store. Who do you expect to come here? We think anyone can spend an entire day here—shop, laze around, eat, drink, chill, watch a film, enjoy live music. People should be able to connect to the content, and anyone can take part in activities without having to spend a lot of money.

Meet the Dream Makers R
unning from now till May 31, Siam Discovery’s The Exploratorium invites you to discover your dreams through the inspiring journeys of local dreammakers who have followed their passions to create inspiring lives. Meet the female solo traveler who wants to see the world, the young man who fell in love with fashion and jeans, a group of friends who are curating their own coffee culture, and the product designers who have made it onto the global stage. They’ll all be sharing their personal journeys to success alongside plenty of activities and 5,000 related products from top brands on sale. THE STYLE MAKERS Boom Hutasuwan is an avid fashionista, denim collector, and owner of Selvedgework, a local custom-made jeans brand suitable for everyone, everywhere. How did you find your dream? I think a dream is born from questioning yourself and your life: what do you want to achieve with your life? Everyone has a dream inside them. I used to dream of being rich and famous, but then I realized material objects are not what I care about. I want something simple, deep and fulfilling. How did Selvedgework start? I think it all started with asking myself what my true passion in life is. I’ve always been obsessed with jeans: collecting them and customizing them to suit my own style. When I asked myself what I wanted to do, I knew it was this. From today through May 31, meet Boom and his products for Selvedgework at The Exploratorium’s fashion booth, where you’ll find the brand’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection alongside those from SSAP NYC, Urface, Walkin, SARRAN by Sarran Youkongdee and more.

ADVERTORIAL
THE JOURNEY MAKERS
THE COFFEE CULT MAKERS
THE DESIGN MAKERS
Nancy Pumipak, or as many may know her through her Facebook page HappyNancy, is fulfilling her dream by traveling solo around the world.
Tae Witvasutti, House Juntornmuntana and Fah Weeratham are the team behind one of Thailand’s best coffee brands, Brave Roasters, which puts a trend-driven spin on local coffee in a way that is changing the country’s caffeine culture.
Decha Archjananun and Ploypan Theerachai are the two product designers behind Thinkk Studio, which has won many awards around the world including Japan’s Good Design Award.
What ignited your dream? I’ve always dreamed of experiencing life around the world. I was fortunate enough to have traveled from a young age, which exposed me to new experiences, cultures and societies that each had their own uniqueness. It made me determined to explore more and see as much of the world as possible in one lifetime. What motivates you? Everyone has their own dream, some people might dream of money and others might dream of love. Whatever it is, that dream should motivate you to keep moving forward in life. To discover your true dream, you need to evaluate yourself and figure out what kind of person you are. Once you know who you are, then it’s a lot easier to move towards your goals. From today through Apr 23, global trotters and travel bloggers like HappyNancy and Go! Graph will be sharing their adventures and inspirations through a variety of travel-related workshops including techniques on how to use a Go Pro on Apr 21 and how to take trendy photos with a Lomo'Instant polaroid camera on Apr 23.
Has your dream changed during your journey to success? Tae: Despite growing older, I think we’re all still kids in some way. It’s our work approach. We might have learnt better decision-making skills and we’re closer to our goal, but in the end we’re just a bunch of kids having fun while making our dream come true. We need to keep dreaming as long as we live, and for us, we want to make this dream a reality. What motivates you? Fah: The biggest motivation for me is constantly telling myself to believe that I can do it. You’ll face a lot of obstacles and it might feel like you’re going back to square one all the time, but remind yourself that you can overcome these challenges. Meet some of Bangkok’s best coffee makers including the teams behind Brave Roasters, Brix, Ceresia Coffee Roasters, Roots Cafe and Organic Supply from Apr 23-May 5.
MEET THE DREAM MAKERS
What was your dream? Ploypan: Even though Thais are very talented at product design, I dreamed of creating a studio that could bring local standards up to meet global ones. Decha: I felt that my dream was shifting while I was growing up. When I was young, being featured in a magazine was my biggest dream. As I got older, I dreamed of working abroad, having my own brand, helping my community, and creating something uniquely Thai. What’s the best way to achieve your dream? Decha: I have a basic strategy, which is to keep working at it constantly and share it with people regularly. That way, you receive feedback which will motivate you further. Doing something continuously will help you to become skilled at it— no one is born an expert. From May 7-31, take inspiration from the works of Thinkk Studio alongside creations from Aor Sutthiprapha, Studio 248 and Trimode Studio. There also promises to be an exhibition showcasing the works from the 130 brands that make up ODS (Objects of Desire Store), with date to be confirmed.

GUIDE TO PHUKET
Bangkok is gearing up to welcome the all-new Thailand Creative and Design Centre (TCDC, see page 6) on May 5, but it's not just about the capital. The soon-to-open TCDC Khon Kaen takes over 1,500 sq meters of land which belongs to Khon Kaen University as a resource for Isaan design. Like TCDCs in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, the space will provide co-working facilities and a design library, but will also highlight local craft skills. An “Isaan Materials Center” will offer local designers, makers and artists access to the best locally sourced silk, cotton and ceramics. Casual visitors can also drop by to view the regional art exhibitions or take part in workshops that highlight local craft skills. As we've seen with the success of TCDC Chiang Mai and events such as Chiang Mai Design Week, the design center's efforts to foster a creative economy in Thailand have been moving from strength to strength.

There's a hot new establishment along Singapore's Mosque Street (a part of town where anyone in the know should be staying). Hotel Mono (hotelmono.com) has combined six conservation shop-houses to make room for a series of high quality and well-designed rooms. We've seen our fair share of minimalistic hotel designs in Singapore (Lloyd's Inn, The Warehouse), but none as committed as this one. The hotel is completely decked out in monochrome colors and no two rooms are the same, thanks to award-winning firm Spacedge Designs, who took Design of the Year in 2012 President Design Award for their glossy luminating HDB flat design Wonder Box. They've also kept prices at just SG$160 (B4,000) for a double. Book way in advance as they only have 46 rooms.

We just got the Bangkok prices for three of this year’s most talked-about Omega watch re-releases from Baselworld 2017. The Omega 1957 Trilogy sees the Swiss watch brand bring back to life three of its most iconic models from 60 years ago: the Seamaster 300 Master Chronometer 39 mm (B245,000), the Railmaster Master Chronometer 38 mm (B237,000) and the Speedmaster 38.6 mm (B252,000). In trying to stick as closely to the original designs as possible, Omega has kept with the more modest casesizes of yester-year, though some may question the decision to go with modern, bright-green luminous markers (as well as some faux-vintage patina on the dial). All this comes at a premium: each model costs about B100,000 up on its modern-day counterpart. Try M/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd., 02-129-4878. BTS Siam

6 Inspiring Sustainability Initiatives in Thailand While the world continues towards its sustainability goals, many local independent organizations are also taking the task into their own hands. From sustainable music festivals to tree planting projects, these initiatives are leading examples of how everyone can pitch in and do their part. Big Trees: Saving Thailand's Trees Made up of some 16,000 young professionals, this p ro j e c t i s d e d i c a t e d t o preventing Thailand’s trees from being cleared for urban development. In 2014 they ran a competition for citizens to nominate Thailand’s best tree and designate “Heritage Trees” that ought to be protected. More recently, they've collaborated with Fab Farm to launch a “100KM Market,” focused on selling food sourced from no more than 100km away while raising awareness for tree protection.
Courageous Kitchen: Making Fine Dining Sustainable This project started as a series of cooking schools for underprivileged children with an aim to teach them about nutrition, food waste prevention and the basics of cooking. More recently, they launched the Courageous Bangkok side project, which invites the city’s top chefs to
join the sustainability drive in their own kitchens. Their event at the end of last year invited some of the city’s top restaurants including Asia’s 50 Best Restaurant tripletime-winner Gaggan along with other top names like Bo.lan, Le Du and Quince for a huge cook-off to promote sustainable living.
Mue Yen Mueng Yen: Using Social Media to Plant Trees In an initiative to make the city cooler back in 2015, a group of university students invited 30 local celebrities to plant trees around Chiang Mai, share the photos on Facebook and challenge three other people to do the same. The result was a massive trend that spread across social media, leading to more than 5,000 trees being planted around the country. In 2017, the group continues to host tree planting campaigns while also expanding their goals to improving the water system of Chiang Mai’s canals, too.

by promoting local-run independent activities. Their latest project, Appear, collaborates with the United Nations Development Program and the BMA to use tourism as a means of saving disappearing neighborhoods around the country, from Bang Lamphu to Hua Takhe, and ultimately preserve culture, support locals with sustainable income, a n d s o lve s o c i a l i ss u e s through innovation.
Wonderfruit: Making Sustainable Events Trendy While the words “music festival” and “sustainable” don’t often come paired
together, this annual arts and music event aims to change that. Not only is it arguably T h a i l a n d ’s m o s t t re n d y festival right now, but it also puts sustainability at its core. For instance, the festival area uses a water filtration system to self-maintain its fields and has its own farm to provide a self-sustaining food outlet. Meanwhile, their stages are built from natural materials such as bamboo, all water bottles sold in the festival are biodegradable, and their events include talks and workshops with local eco heroes who are making an impact.
Farm to Functions Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has joined forces with MICE partners and Sampran Model to launch the ‘Farm to Functions’ project - a smart move for sustainable MICE encouraging MICE entrepreneurs to support organic agricultural products produced by local communities. This is the first project in the world involving government and private sectors to support the economy of local communities. Like a bridge directly linking organic farms to kitchens in hotels and conference centers, Farm to Functions delivers healthy food to clients, thereby sharpening their competitive advantages and enhancing the public image of MICE entrepreneurs and Thailand as a whole.

French beauty products don’t get their reputation for nothing, and the 72-percent spring water contained in this paraben preservative-free face mask is suitable for all sensitive skin types—the perfect SOS treatment for sunburn and extreme dehydration.
Any skin treatment or supplement would be in vain without some serious sun protection. La Roche Posay brings a spray formula to SPF 50 facial sunscreen, as well as an anti-shine texture that stops you looking greasy.

In the Club The big changes at Central Embassy keep on coming. Following the launch of the sixth floor's stunning Open House (an art bookstore-slash-co-working-space-slash-posh-food court), the luxury mall has now unveiled its new fifth-story space. Siwilai City Club sees the mall's effortlessly cool flagship boutique expand into a rooftop bar, chillout lounge and succession of restaurants. At the "Eatery," fusion tapas dishes like mackerel crudo (B350) get dished out alongside cocktails and beer, while substantial grilled wagyu T-bones (B2,700) cut from Thai-raised cattle can be had at the alfresco "Grill" zone. Siwilai is very keen on toting the sustainability and the local emphasis of dishes here, so that "wagyu" even comes from Thai-farmed cattle. Most impressive might be the "Terrace," where lounge-y outdoor beach chairs invite you to sit back in the sunshine and enjoy 180-degree views of Phloen Chit. JAMESON, B1,499/1L
This classic Irish whiskey is the smart drinkers’ hack for any bar: easy to find on even the worst-stocked spirit shelves and priced like something that should be masked under sugar and fruit juice. But the complex, naturally sweet taste of Jameson deserves so much more. Smooth, honeyed and free from the peaty kick which puts so many off Scotch, this is an accessible whiskey that doesn’t need anything to make it go down easily. Sure, it doesn’t have the complexity of your favorite 18 YO, but at this price who cares?

JOHNNIE WALKER GREEN LABEL, B1,899/750ML
The Old Town’s new secret bar is a minimalist marvel. By Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj The buzz: Hidden far from sight in the Old Town, this cocktail bar helmed by Anupas “Kong” Premanuwat, who worked as a mixologist at New York’s acclaimed Angel’s Share speakeasy (a former stomping ground of Bronx’s Hideyuki Saito and home to the current Bacardi Legacy global champion, Gn Chan) for five years, carries an alluring air of mystery. The decor: This bar takes some finding. You’ll have to traverse a narrow and dark alley running alongside Brown Sugar jazz bar on Phra Sumen Road. Spot the spirit house that guards a little brown door and you’re at the entrance. Inside is a dusty concrete staircase that leads you past some pretty decrepit scenes before you reach the bar on the third floor. Behind the sliding wooden door is a minimalist mix of wood, raw concrete and marble that conjures an atmosphere that’s cozy if slightly eerie, a little like an abandoned omakase restaurant. Candles give off light here and there, while behind the bar is a very limited lineup of bottles (that doesn’t resemble what’s on the menu at all). A light installation in one corner gives off a purple glow. The drinks: With a menu that changes monthly, cocktails (starting at B350) spotlight local ingredients plucked from the fresh market. In keeping with the minimalist theme, names are functional rather than flowery: “Banana,” “Gooseberry,” “Roasted Corn.” Kong shows off Japanese-like attention to detail and well-honed
techniques in sophisticated concoctions like the “10 Herb” (B360), which mixes jub liang (a herbal tea containing herbs like arhat fruit, chrysanthemum, grass jelly and ginkgo) with gin, honey, egg white, lime and burnt sugar on top for a drink that’s heady and potent, yet easy on the palate. They also offer natural wines (made without chemical intervention) from cult wineries, including “orange wine” (white wine made using the same method as red wine) like Matias Michelini “Via Revolucionaria” Torrantes (B370/glass, B1,750/bottle) from Argentina. The crowd: Like Q&A’s hip young things, only even hipper. Think arty types in round-shaped glasses and ripped denim lining the bar and speaking in hushed tones. The music: Minimal, ambient pieces that set the scene so well you may not even notice they’re playing. Why you should care: Mysterious yet fun, this “secret” bar strikes a nice balance without being too pretentious. Do note: This is only a two-person operation (Kong and his wine-loving partner, Elaine Sun) and there’s a strict no-standing policy, so you might want to book ahead. If anything, it’s a great place to try a couple of creative cocktails before launching into a long night of live music at Brown Sugar. 3/F, 469 Phra Sumen Rd., 02-067-6731. Open Thu-Sun 7pm-midnight
MIXOLOGY Charoenkrung is getting the tropical bar it’s been waiting for Set to open right next door to 80/20, the Charoenkrung restaurant that claimed the #15 spot in Top Tables 2017 for its modern take on Thai cuisine, is a new cocktail bar that we’ve been waiting a long time for. Tropic City is a collaboration between Sebastian De La Cruz and Philip Stefanescu (both formerly of Sapparot Goup) that promises bold (but not exclusively) rum-based drinks. You might know De La Cruz from behind the bar at Thonglor’s Touche Hombre, while Stefanescu formerly covered Lady Brett and UNCLE. Joining them is Krit “Joey” Parkobdee, previously at Bronx Liquid Parlour and one of four finalists of this year’s Bacardi Legacy Thailand Competition. Just as excitingly, 80/20 will be providing the food and they’re promising a completely new menu. Tropic City is scheduled to open at the beginning of June.
In the headache-inducing world of Johnnie Walker’s color chart, Green Label sits somewhere between Black and Gold. But unlike other JW drinks, is blended exclusively from single malts in a bid to make a cut-price Scotch you can drink neat. The taste has that rich sweetness you get from a good Speyside, but there’s also a little of Johnnie Walker’s characteristic smokiness. We’d say it’s nicer than Glenfiddich’s 12 YO, not as nice as their 15 YO—which makes its price kind of a bargain. Available at most convenience stores including 7-Eleven and shopping malls
JIM BEAM DOUBLE OAK, B1,500/750ML
A bottle of this new release from one of America’s bourbon big-wigs landed on our desk recently. It didn’t last long. While we generally struggle with the harshness of Jim Beam’s standard offering, the twice-over charred oak barrel aging treatment which this stuff gets results in a much smoother drink. It also amplifies the characteristic sweetness of bourbon while adding a more woody punch. Good stuff. Available at Tops, Villa market and Foodland
CHIVAS REGAL 12-YEAR, B1,449/700ML
Sure, Chivas doesn’t have the cred of a single-malt brand, but “blended” is not a swear word in our books. Here you have a blended whiskey that sticks to base spirits from the Speyside region (a byword for raisin-y sweet easy drinkers) for a bottle that more than holds its own. If you’ve always found that slight smoky kick of Johnnie Black off-putting, then try Chivas instead. Not characterful, but safe. Available at most convenience stores including 7-Eleven and shopping malls
THE GLENLIVET FOUNDER’S RESERVE, B1,888/700ML
It would be rude not to include at least one single malt in this list. While this entry-level bottle from one of the Scottish highland’s oldest distilleries doesn’t have the sweet, luscious wallop of the brand’s 12 YO (B2,479/700ml), it’s still not bad. When you’re in an airport departure lounge and it’s this or a Jack Daniel’s, don’t hesitate—it’ll go down happily without a mixer. Available at Villa Markets

Move over Thonglor Here’s why Phrom Phong is right now the hottest hood for eating and drinking in Bangkok. By Natcha Sanguankiattichai MK Live
Coffeas
Coffeas
Le Cochon Blanc
This coffee roaster has expanded to a full-time cafe, complete with coffee school. Run by certified Q Grader and SCAA-certified instructor Nisakorn Sinsawat, the cafe aims to showcase specialty Thai coffee through rotating house-roasted beans, mainly from Chiang Rai. Here, she only serves single origins (from B80 for espresso and B120 for drip coffee). In addition to local coffee, there are a few imported beans available too. At the back of the shop, there’s also a space for coffee classes, ranging from basic brewing (B8,500/1 day) to professional Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA)-certified and Q grader (coffee grader) courses (B88,000/6 days).
Taking over what used to be modern Thai restaurant Baa Ga Din, Le Cochon Blanc gives the space a complete makeover. Gone are the rustic Thai signifiers, replaced by a moodier mix of black paint, beautiful flamingo wallpaper, chandeliers and stylish collectibles picked out by French restaurateur Fred Meyer (of other such bastions of good taste as Issaya, Pizza Massilia and Kom-Ba-Wa). Between two separate dining rooms sits a massive grill pit, where chef Chandler Schultz cooks up smoked pork ribs (B580 for half; B890 for full rack), steaks (prices range from B1,000 for hanger steak to B350/g of wagyu tomahwak) and even lobsters (B1,750). Don’t miss the potato side dishes, including the super smooth and creamy mash (B190) or the delicious thick-cut fries (B180) that are cooked in dry-aged beef fat (a new contender for the best in town). Desserts are whipped up by Issaya’s group pastry chef Arissara “Paper” Chongphanitkul—think classic American treats like strawberry shortcake (B390) and apple pie (B310).

Dim Dim This candlelit, Chinese-themed cocktail bar exudes oriental cool through vintage tea boxes and rows of waving lucky cats. Bartenders whip up drinks with Chinese twists like the Oolong Tea & Orange Sour (B280), a twist on the whiskey sour made with oolong tea and orange peel-infused Wild Turkey 81 bourbon. Just as exciting is the house-infused chrysanthemum vodka—try it in a shot (B280) or a cocktail like the Chrysanthemum Vanilla Fizz (with vanilla syrup, lemon, egg white and soda, garnished with chrysanthemum, lemon and orange, B280). Hungry? There are crispy Chinese pork platters (B320) and Hong Kong-style congee (B220). 27/1 Sukhumvit Soi 33, 02-085-2788
MK Live The latest concept of giant hotpot chain MK, MK Live markets itself as the healthiest branch yet. Amid green-dominated decor flooded with light, they serve a new steamed shabu option where you’re given wooden boxes filled with veggies alongside your choice of sliced kurobuta pork (B550), Australian beef (B650) or Japanese wagyu beef (B1,100). Let them sit over a tabletop stove for seven minutes and you’re done. For typical hot pots, you have five options of both soup and sauce here. 7/F, EmQuartier, Sukhumvit Rd. BTS Phrom Phong
Patissez The original creator of the trending “freakshakes,” Patissez, from Canberra, Australia, brings its overloaded drinks to Bangkok, alongside more Aussie-style cafe food. The photogenic shakes (all B230) come in five different varieties: nutella pretzel, mint chocolate, banana caramel, Thai tea white chocolate (exclusive to Bangkok), and watermelon and berries. On top of that, you can get all-day brunchy dishes like smashed avocado on toast (B380) and the Freak Burger (double-patty Aussie beef burger packed with cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, house barbecue sauce, bacon jam on a brioche bun, B490).

Sri Trat Sukhumvit Soi 33’s new Thai restaurant presents the cuisine from Trat, a province in the east of the country. In a stylish, contemporary brick and wood house, Sri Trat lets you enjoy the likes of moo chamuang (pork curry with chamuang leaves, B220), barracuda spicy salad (B220) and massaman curry with unripe durian (B280). They are also serious about their bar, where ex-Vesper bartender Paradee Sahathanasomboon rolls out concoctions like Trad Bee’s Knees (gin, fresh lime, honey and kaffir lime leaf, B360).

Vanilla Sky Rooftop Bar Bangkok’s latest rooftop bar sits on top of the new Compass Skyview Hotel, five minutes from BTS Phrom Phong. That means 36th-story views stretching over Thonglor in one direction and towards downtown from the other. Gin and tonics take a starring role in the cocktail menu, all priced at B320 and with some unusual flavors in the mix (think peppermint and passionfruit or chestnut and chamomile). Our favorite, called the Honey Spice, sees dried chili-infused gin mixed with homemade honey-and-rosemary-infused syrup and tonic water, garnished with dried chili for a well-balanced kick. The rest of Vanilla’s signature cocktails keep things easy to drink and light on the spirits. Taste of Asia (B350) is a combination of vodka, kaffir lime-infused syrup and lychee with a dash of black pepper to work against the sweet and fruity flavors.

The blue LEDs, the sturdy, Victorianindustrial furnishings (lamps plonked on vintage telescope tripods, cocoa leather seats riveted with brass): Elements speaks of a restaurant that was the height of trend five years ago. But while the dining room at the Okura Prestige hotel’s modern fine-dining flagship may have stood still, the food has not. From early insistences that it served something called “modern logical cuisine,” the restaurant has now found its niche doing French cuisine with a heavy amount of Japanese influences. Their set menus start at B1,900 for four courses, but that’s not really enough, so instead you’ll be getting the B2,800 five-course set or going a la carte, and that means you’ll be spending a lot of money. We’d say at least B5,000 for each person at the table after a couple of glasses of wine. And on the subject of wine: it starts at B450 by the glass, and that’s just way too much.
Konchong Konprung HHHH
Thai-Chinese. 109 Intamara Soi 3, Suthisan R d . , 0 9 7-2 5 1- 8 1 7 8 . O p e n W e d - M o n 11am-9:30pm. BTS Saphan Kwai.
Tucked in the unusual foodie location of Soi Inthamara 3, Konchong Konprung takes homey Thai-Chinese family recipes away from the usual drab shop-house setting and places them in a voguish little cafe. The yellow decor is light and bright, with nods to Chinese culture in the delicately patterned tableware and tastefully chosen vintage drawings of old Chinese ladies from the Warlord Era. It’s a charming match for down-to-earth comfort dishes like rice with pad nam lieb moo (stir-fried Chinese olives with minced pork, B115), served the oldschool Chinese way in a high, ceramic curved bowl, its beautiful arrangement of minced pork and nam lieb flecked with colorful chopped shallots, chili and green kajorn (tonkin jasmine) flowers. The taste doesn’t disappoint: salty yet balanced
This is not esoteric, hard-to-find stuff, either, and nor do they pour it with a care-free hand. Good job, then, that some of the food here is excellent. The miso consomme with seared scallop (B410) has a broth so delicate to look at you’d never guess it was turbocharged with such flavor. A main course of soymarinated duck breast (B950) is equally awesome: smoky eggplant; rich, sweet duck meat; a croquette of confit duck which is every bit as good as a croquette of confit duck sounds. The menu says the jus has yuzu in it. We don’t taste it and nor do we care. Then for dessert, a tangy miso ice cream (set menu only) that plays beautifully against a rod of tightly packed layers of stuff chocolate-y and gooey. For the most part those Japanese touches work well, if not always. The “uni butter” in the crab risotto only interferes with what in its own right is a delicious dish underpinned by a powerful seafoodrich stock. On our last visit, it had needlessly been bumped into a “taraba” crab risotto, and with it the price hiked by 50 percent from B430 to B660. The tuna tataki starter (B410) with a few sad drips of ponzu sauce is also a criminally bland way to start the meal. With its Japanese nods and conceptual tasting menu, Elements begs comparison with the House on Sathorn, where we can’t help feeling that the food is on that next level, the dining room more special, the service more at-ease, and the bill more understandable why you just paid it.
with a handy slice of lime. The khai jiew gark moo (omelet with pork crackling, B85) might be oily, but shallots and chili help cut through the fat for a guiltypleasure treat. Not so special are the snacks like hae guen (shrimp ball wrapped with tofu, B95), which despite their crispy skin and tender interior just don’t have enough shrimp meat. The overly sweet and salty flavor of the crispy chicken in red shaoxing sauce over rice (B140) also makes it hard to really get into. Nor do we buy into their Konprung kanomjeen (a restaurant signature that sees spicy pork soup served with kanomjeen from Nakhon Ratchasima, B135)—a tasteless attempt to improve the dish with shredded pork instead of fish. Other dishes are satisfying but without fireworks: the sakoo piek (floor ball) panna cotta with longan and young coconut (B105) dull; the tom buay kratiam dong moo sub (pickled Chinese plum and garlic soup with minced pork, B135) an obvious second place to the excellent version at Saeng Chai Pochana on Sukhumvit Road (between BTS Thong Lo and Phrom Phong). OK, so there’s not much reason to go routing out Konchong Konprung purely on the strength of their kitchen, but with solid and satisfying staples, as well as prices which are a far cry from its hip neighbors in Ari, it still makes for tasty, satisfying and supercasual, Thai-Chinese dining.

Arroz
Bangkok’s latest Spanish restaurant does arroz meloso, paella’s creamy cousin.
The buzz: A restaurant whose name literally translates to “rice” in Spanish, Arroz vies for the title of best-paella-intown with the offerings of Spanish chef-owner Victor Burgos (formerly of Thyme), whose portfolio includes stints at Michelin-starred restaurants like The Principle in Hong Kong. The decor: Thanks to one of those charming mid-century homes dotted around Thonglor, it has that quaintly residential feel, which Burgos’ team have directed in a Latin direction with colorful tiles, custom-made clay pots and dishware from Spain. The indoor dining area is vast (with nice views through to the kitchen), but we’re betting the terrace will be
22
the spot to book Oct-Feb, thanks to its easygoing garden vibe. The food: We’ve already bigged up their paella (the black ink and Euro-hailing seafood variety at B1,200/2,300 is a real highlight), but the restaurant also specializes in another Spanish rice dish arroz meloso, known in English as paella’s creamier cousin. Burgos’ flavorful stewed pork variety in a paprika-rich broth (B550) packs a real kick. Other tapas staples on the menu include cold cuts (of course there’s iberico ham at B750/500g), gazpacho soup (B150), croquettes (B160) and garlic prawns (B280). You can also have rice for dessert in the form of a rice pudding with mint and chocolate (B180).
The drinks: The menu lists an impressive 100-odd Spanish wines, and over 20 of those can be ordered by the glass or carafe. Prices start from B165 by the glass. The restaurant also stores beers like Estrella Galicia (B100/330ml). Why you should care: The spot actually belongs to Burgos himself, and restaurants driven by a chef are nearly always better than ones imagined by business partners. Plus, we’ve tasted the paella, and it’s intense. Natcha Sanguankiattichai 112 Sukhumvit Soi 53, 02-258-7696. Open Wed-Mon 5:30-10pm; SatSun 11:30am-2:30pm. www.fb.com/arrozbkk

NEW AND NOTED
Riverside Home Fans of Elmar Offwhite’s (Tha Maharaj, Maharat Rd., 099194-6169) super-sized mango bingsu served in a hot pot with a showy mist of dry ice now need to head to the riverside’s Tha Maharaj instead of Ekkamai. It’s new, bigger space inside the Chao Phraya community mall continues to dish out the aforementioned mango (B195/B315) and melon bingsu (B225/B395), which are joined by new bingsu creations in flavors of banoffee (B215/B325) and corn cheese (B185/B325). Elmar’s bingsu differs from others thanks to its rougher frozen ice soaked in milk, rather than the more-common snow-like frozen milk.
Seeing Red Bangkok’s current fetish for Chinese-themed bars reaches its zenith at this latest spot for the Soi Nana neighborhood. Neon Chinese signs and a do-nothing approach to shop-house restoration give Ba Hao (8 Soi Nana, Maitri Chit Rd. www.fb.com/
Sorrento
8bahao) the requisite look of old Hong Kong cool, complete with open frontage that spills onto the Yoawarat streets. Order the Opium (B288), which sees a classic negroni spiked with ginseng and herbal liquor. And you’ll need some of owner Tikhamporn Chuenkittivoravat’s duck wontons (B218) to go with that. She trained as a chef at the Mandarin Oriental.
Island Style Ari's new Hawaiian cocktail bar is the neighborhood's most exciting new opening since we can't remember. Pakalolo (Ari Soi 4, 02-0750939) takes its Hawaiian theme, adds a dose of the Florida Keys and creates a look that says "cocktail hour at the coconut lodge" in a kitch, wink-wink kind of way. Don’t miss drinking the Lilia (B280) for a hit of elderflower and thyme that goes right up your nose, along with pear vodka, gin and pink guava juice. Though the space screams "bar" louder than "restaurant," you can still have a proper fill with poke bowls (B180) and sushi rolls (B280-380). Natcha Sanguankiattichai, Choltanutkun
This Italian restaurant had been a Sathorn mainstay in various forms since 1989. The menu spotlights traditional Italian and European dishes and a well-priced wine list amid a fittingly elegant design. Classics include the Pizza Sorrento, two layers of crispy crust sandwiching ham, rocket, tomato and mascarpone cheese, and the herb-stuffed, grilled lamb rack with ratatouille and spinach. Another highlight is the pasta cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper), made in a large ParmigianoReggiano cheese wheel with flamed cognac to melt the cheese. The drinks list covers The Don, a sweet and smoky drink that mixes Chivas Regal Extra with port wine, cherry syrup, a dash of Peychaud’s bitters and smoked rosemary.
