A checklist of BK Magazine’s most important discoveries this week Edgy media in Bangkok looks like Abhisit Vejjajiva The Standard is Bangkok’s hip new new-media platform, the brain-child of ex-Momentum editor Nakarin Wanakijpaibul along with three other people who are also somehow editor-inchiefs. It’s so edgy that they’ve recruited conservative political poster boy Abhisit Vejjajiva as one of their columnists. The same Abhisit who famously said, “Unfortunately, some people died” following the 2010 crackdown during which an estimated 91 people were killed. Official tagline of The Standard: “Stand up for the people.” Social media memes ensue. That the Justice Ministry is pushing to improve gay rights in Thailand Or at least one little corner of the Justice Ministry, called the Liberties Protection Department and headed by Pitikan Sithidej. She wants to see a petition to legalize same-sex marriage, which 60,000 people have signed on Change.org, turned into law, and promises to put the bill to parliament. While Taiwan’s supreme court has paved the way to legalizing gay marriage this year, Thailand’s absence of legal rights for LGBT people continues to feel like something from another decade. That Bangkok’s new parliament building is still nowhere near ready Back in 2015, the engineers building Bangkok’s new house of parliament promised they’d get the job done by June 2017. Welcome June 2017 and they’re now asking for another 926 days. Total completed so far: 36 percent. Time it’s taken to get there: eight years. That’s about one year short of the pace it took to build the Taj Mahal. That Thonglor’s swanky new pasta joint has finally opened Choti Leenutaphong and Debby Tang’s new restaurant, La Dotta, is finally open, serving big plates of no-nonsense pasta whipped up by a Sicilian chef at B300-400 a pop. And if you don’t know who Choti Leenutaphong and Debby Tang are, you need to read BK more. That the Park Nai Lert Hotel is coming back Yes, the old hotel is to become another casualty of Bangkok’s war against modernist architecture. But while a Bangkok Hospital is popping up in its place, the hotel has vowed to come back as a boutique hotel of about 40 rooms, opening in about two years’ time.

upfront HOT OR NOT

Hot: Abhisit

Not: Prayuth

The return of the Democrat party’s PDRC defectors is suddenly getting headlines for Thailand’s Grand Old Party. Hearing about Abhisit feels slightly surreal, a bit like being told Cleisthenes (b. 570 BC) is in town and that he too agrees with Bhichai Rattakul on forming a four-party democratic alliance.

Hot: 2nd

Not: 1st

If you’re first to buy your tickets, you may end up seeing your favorite artist second. Confused? Oh Wonder and Britney Spears both added a second date to the Bangkok leg of their world tours, only it came before the original date. This has caused outrage among fans who don’t want to be in the second wave of Instagram posts for Britney, Josephine and Anthony. See page 20.

Hot: Raids

Not: Nightlife

As if the men in brown weren’t enough, troops are raiding bars now. Twenty soliders, led by a colonel, crashed a bar in Lad Phrao last Friday. For Live RCA, it won’t take a raid for it to shut down. Just high rent. This is its last month, and we can’t help but feel Bangkok’s nightlife is in freefall, due to vigorous enforcing of early closing times.

Hot: Gin

Not: Nose to tail

How can it have taken two years for someone to open a second proper gin bar in Bangkok? Living in a city with only one gin bar in 2017 is like living in a city with only one nose-to-tail restaurant in 2013. Not that anyone eats that stuff anymore—as the recently deceased Smith can tell you. So thank you, Just a Drink (see page 15), you’ve made Thonglor cool again.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

INTERVIEW Back in April, news broke of an underage prostitution ring in Mae Hong Son that alledgedly services visiting officials. Ticha Na Nakorn is the director of Baan Kanjanapisek Juvenile Vocational Training Centre, and has been fighting for the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) to take up the case. A former member of the National Reform Council (NRC) and the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) of 2015, Ticha is a vocal champion of women’s rights in Thailand. Here, she discusses the country’s prostitution culture, and the progress being made in the Mae Hong Son case. How often in Thailand is sex given as a gift to government and high-ranking officials? I can’t give you an exact number, but ever since I’ve been old enough to read the news and take an interest in women’s rights, this sort of case has been consistent. Even today, I still keep hearing these stories no less than before. Why do you think such “traditions” still exist? Thai government has this patronage system, where you can become your boss’s favorite by giving him a gift, and that gift is sex. It costs you money, but it’s like an investment where you make it back through promotions later. This kind of culture ruins the careers of people doing real hard work. How can Thai society combat this attitude? Stop spoiling high-ranking officials. If we keep overly respecting them, they will not fear anything and will continue to do bad things. But Thai people don’t know how to do that. We tend to accept people so easily

based on money and social status, and treat them like they are the center of the universe. We need to stop spoiling those people. What are you currently working on regarding the Mae Hong Son case? I just submitted an open letter to Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha’s spokesperson last Friday (May 26). Part of the letter says, “If there are any government officials involved in the sex trafficking scandal, the DSI has to take this case. They cannot just get questioned by someone from their own government office.” I also asked Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha to personally pay close attention to this case because, at the time that the Mae Hong Son scandal broke, he was giving a casual rant about this same issue on TV: “This culture has to go already,” he said. “Why are you even still doing this?”

the Royal Thai Police for writing a letter to the Prime Minister [Thaksin Shinawatra], asking an honest, innocent question: was it appropriate for the Commissioner General of the Royal Thai Police to be involved in a sex scandal? He tried to sue me for B100 million and the case lasted over 10 years. He sued me because he felt like I was insulting him. In the end, the case was dismissed. The judge stated clearly that it is not an insult for citizens to criticize officials. Has that experience made you afraid of criticizing high-ranking officials? Not really. We have all been scared our whole lives, and that’s why no one has said nor done anything. Sex scandals are now getting bigger and bigger with no sign of stopping. Those people have been spoiled too much. Interview by Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj

What challenges face those who report such cases? About 11-12 years ago, I was sued by the Commissioner General of

ADVERTORIAL

Life Cycle Let's bike to your events Riding your bicycle to work or to meet friends is not only a great way to get your daily dose of exercise, it’s also a more eco-friendly alternative to practically any other form of transportation. While Bangkok’s chaotic roads and hot weather can be offputting, there are actually plenty of reasons to get back on your bike.

PUNPUN A snazzy new bike lane Bangkok’s a few months away from getting a brand new revamp of the popular Suvarnabhumi Sky Lane, arguably the city’s hottest destination for biking. Set to open in November, the improved venue will boast additional bike lanes to welcome more cyclists and reduce the risk of accidents— as well as more rest stops. There also promises to be more medical stops, as well as a health clinic from Samitivej Hospital, and an indoor "Bike Center," complete with a food court, bike equipment and repair stores.

BANG KRACHAO

Convenient bicyclesharing services Bangkok just welcomed its first station-less bike-sharing service, the Singapore-hailing oBike, which lets you grab a bike and drop it off wherever is convenient for you. For only B10 per 15 minutes, this is a great alternative to getting around the city at peak hour. Another option is the BMA’s Pun Pun service, whose bikes can be picked up at stations across the city for B10 for the first hour (first 15 minutes free).

Brand new parks

Bike-friendly destinations

While Lumphini, Benjakiti and Suan Luang parks may be great for biking, they can often be overcrowded. Luckily, Bangkok’s welcomed several new parks that offer plenty of green space for riding your bike. Benjakiti Forest Park, which opened quietly in late2016, is still unknown to a lot of people and offers 61 rai of open space that’s great for a casual bike ride. Meanwhile, Chula Park, which opened in March right in the heart of Bangkok, is an equally good destination. Head there before it gets too crowded!

You don’t have to leave Bangkok to get a taste of the jungle. A destination like Bang Krachao, otherwise known as Bangkok’s green lung, is perfect for escaping the bustle of the city and exploring the other side of the river by bike. Bring your own set of wheels along or rent one for the day by the Bang Krachao pier. If you’d rather explore the surroundings with a group, Spiceroads offers great tours through the area’s local temples, schools and markets. Register at www. spiceroads.com.

Bike customization services It’s now easier than ever to look cool while riding a bicycle. Local company Tint Bicycle lets you design your own bike, including handpicking the model, material and size, down to the color of the wheels and type of handlebars. Their clean, retro designs are sure to make you stand out on the road. Prices start at B7,500, see www.tintbicycle.com.

S ta r s o f the Street Which old-school restaurants deserve Michelin love? By BK staff

Chote Chitr

A

s the Michelin inspectors run around Bangkok tasting and rating dishes for the city’s first ever version of the guide, we look beyond the obvious and throw out our two cents on the classic food institutions which stand a chance of making the guide.

Agave (Foo Mui Kee 2) Specialty: Beef tongue stew What makes it stand out: A clash of Western, Chinese and Thai culinary cultures Price per head: B200-300 Sadly, Silom’s original Foo Mui Kee shut its doors at the end of last year, ending half a century of old-school charm. Over on Rama 9, however, another branch of the same family continues to cook the same Chinese-inspired Western recipes. The succulent beef tongue stew tastes of butter and rich gravy, while the beef fillet salad features tender slices of meat and a unique, refreshing dressing. 61/127 Rama 9 Soi 7, 02-248-2150. Open daily 11am-9pm

Chote Chitr

Jay Fai

Known for its omelet bursting with crab meat as well as other classic, wok-fried seafood dishes, this Old Town restaurant deserves mention for the sheer quality of the ingredients which its owner, Auntie Fai, personally selects. At the age of 70, she still heads the open kitchen every night, cooking up your food a la minute over a fiery wok. The signature crab omelet’s non-greasy skin gives way to a thick, fluffy interior, while the hearty raad na (stir-fried noodles in gravy) retains its rare, old-school flavor. Be warned that the experience doesn’t come cheap. 327 Maha Chai Rd., 02-223-9384. Open Mon-Sat 1:30pm-1:30am

Specialty: Old-school Thai dishes What makes it stand out: Incredible ingredients and balance of traditional spices Price per head: B100-150 This small restaurant has found its moment in the spotlight thanks to international publications like The New York Times and Financial Times. If authenticity is your barometer of a good meal, then this is the place. Everything gets cooked the old-fashioned way: from scratch, with increasingly rare ingredients, and an approach to spicing that favors herbal aromas to intense heat. Despite these credentials, Chote Chitr remains little known among Bangkok’s chic and hip. During the day, government officers and local regulars come for mee krob (sweet crispy rice noodles), while by night the five-table space becomes a tourist destination thanks to international media coverage.

JakKee Specialty: Raad na (noodles in gravy) What makes it stand out: Excellent attention to every detail of a Thai-Chinese classic Price per head: B100-150

Specialty: Seafood dishes Price per head: B300-1,000 Behind this shop-house’s dark-tinted windows lies an unlikely setting for some of Bangkok’s most highly praised seafood dishes. The freshness of the ingredients shines, whether its steamed crab, grilled prawns or the sensational, palm-sized fish cakes. 2068/4 Chan Rd., 02-286-7061. Open daily 11am-11pm

Jakkee still retains its old-school look with the original sign out front, despite relocating from Yaowarat to Soi Rangnam. The specialty here is raad na featuring young Chinese kale, tender pork and a flavor-packed gravy. The shrimp wantons are also a good shout, packed with fresh meat. The lunchtime crowd doesn’t lie.

What makes it stand out: A single dish done to perfection Price per head: B60-150 For one of the city’s best khao mun gai, people in the know go to Nai Thong. The space on Sathupradit Soi 58 has expanded over time, but the flavorful signature dish has remained just as amaz-

Standing strong for more over 100 years, the Charoenkrung shop-house serves one of the finest roast ducks in the city, along with other excellent Chinese barbecue dishes. Chefs slice and dice from the shop-front window for an intense experience. To try a bit of everything, order the khao che po: rice topped with roast duck, barbecue pork, crispy pork belly and stuffed pork tail. 1415 Charoenkrung Rd., 02-234-3755. Open daily 7:30am-8:30pm. Restaurants with Michelin cred from abroad

What makes it stand out: Excellent noodles and barbecued meat Price per head: B150-500 Tucked in a sub street off the Charoenkrung main drag, Saen Yod roasts Chinese-style meats that easily contend with Prachak (see page 7). Several decades and a fire haven’t diminished the flavors of its thickly-cut pieces of succulent barbecue pork and intense, garlic-flecked, sticky egg noodles. The to-die-for moo krob (crispy pork) contains just the right amount of fat between its tender meat. Don’t miss the raad na, characterized by charred noodles and a smoky gravy. 88 Soi Charasvieng, North Sathorn Rd., 02-630-9200. Open daily 10am-9pm

Despite the space’s gloomy appearance, dishes shine brightly, like the super yummy green curry and chewy-in-agood-way fish cakes. The gluay chueam (bananas in syrup) are a must for dessert. 59/1 Wireless Rd., 02-252-7637. Open Mon-Sat 10am-3pm

This family run store doesn’t just pull its own, pleasantly chewy egg noodles freshly; it also serves on of the most delicious broths to accompany them. The wontons are just as satisfying thanks to a plump, springy shrimp filling. Save some cash by taking the barbecue pork, but it’s reputation really lies with the fresh crab claw noodles.

Five things you should know about the Michelin Guide 1 Our government has signed a five-year contract with the company, worth around B143.5 million, to launch the yearly guide this year (2017) and covering Bangkok only. 2 Multiple inspectors (Michelin’s sole employees) visit potential restaurants multiple times anonymously and pay their own bills. Though we’ve heard that at the end of their first visit, they announce themselves in order to get deep information about the restaurant and talk to the chef. 3 They judge restaurants for their quality of ingredients, cooking techniques, chef’s personality, value for money and consistency.

4 The ranking goes from one to three stars, with one dubbed “a very good restaurant in its category” and three being “exceptional cuisine, worth a special jouney,” while there’s also the Bib Gourmand section highlighting good, well-priced eats. 5 The stars are only given to restaurants—not chefs—and renewed every year. While current head chef should be praised for getting the restaurant into the guide, the stars don’t follow them. Thus, actually there’s no such thing as Michelin-starred chefs.

BK Asks Michelin is trying to broaden its scope. The only obstacle would be finding suitable enough places that are not "too" street.

Chawadee Nualkhair, author of Bangkok's Best Street Food and Thailand's Best Street Food What obstacles might prevent shop-house eateries from getting Michelin star? I honestly don't think there will be too many obstacles to getting a star for a shop-house eatery here, since it appears that

8

What's your main concern about the street food situation in Bangkok right now? I am concerned that there will be a wholesale obliteration of street food in high-profile areas such as Ratchadamri, Siam and Thonglor, and that there will be no options for people who can't afford to eat in malls. This unnecessarily penalizes the people we depend on for our day-to-day stuff. Also, keeping the street food in touristy areas like Chinatown and Khao San (which is awful already) will inevitably change the food as vendors seek to cater to the tourists (they already do in Khao San). The food will be stagnant, and sweet. There will no longer be any innovation in street food, which is ultimately driven by young Thai consumers. The biggest driver of innovation will then be highend restaurants with frou-frou bullshit like foam and freeze-drying. You won't get influence from the street like you do now, for example upscale Isaan and restaurants using rural herbs.

Shanghai Saint The St. Regis Shanghai Jingan (stregis. ht/2qaSxnU) brings the hotel brand's familiar opulence—and 24-hour butler service—to downtown Shanghai. Western and Chinese design influences blend in the 491 rooms and 55 residences, all with city views—particularly stunning from the 36-68th floors. On the very top of the hotel, you'll find the massive three-bedroom, 650-sq-meter Presidential Suite. Starting at 1,450CNY (B7,200) per night, all rooms feature marble bathrooms with rainforest showers and bathtubs, plush beds and tasteful decorative touches like Chinese calligraphy and handcrafted gold foil paintings. For dinner, feast on either Cantonese, teppanyaki or the chef's seasonal tasting menus. Elsewhere, there are brunch and afternoon tea spots, plus the signature St. Regis Bar, whose cocktails play around with Shanghainese spices.

Seoul Searching Bangkok would do well to look at Seoul’s latest regeneration efforts of underdeveloped areas of the city. The Korean capital recently transformed a huge, 50 year-old highway into a massive, elevated pedestrian walkway. Officially opened on May 20, Seoullo 7017 spans 1km and takes in important landmarks such as Myeong-Dong Market, Namsan Mountain and Seoul Train Station while providing expanses of green space like the Malli-dong Park skygarden and the rose-filled Rose Square. The space even acts as a hub for businesses, with some amazing food on offer. Take your pick of retro Korean desserts at Magnolia Cafe, Korean-style grilled toast and coffee at Hydrangra Bread, and healthy bibimbaps at 7017 Soul Bibimbap. Return flights to Seoul with Thai AirAsia X currently cost B9,755.

The latest opening on Bangkok's healthy eating train, US-hailing Jamba Juice highlights smoothies made from fresh fruits. Established in California in 1990, the juice bar now has more than 800 stores in seven countries, including the Philippines, Singapore and UAE. Classic smoothies like the Strawberry Dream (strawberry and banana) and Banana Berry (banana, blueberry, apple and strawberry) start at B110/35cl, while protein- and fiber-boosted cups like Green Getaway (mango, spinach, passion fruit, chia seed, yogurt) and PB Chocolate Love (banana, chocolate, peanut butter and almond milk) cost B130/35cl. They also have a line of freshly squeezed juices (B140/35cl) and energy bowls like berry acai bowl (with banana, soymilk and yogurt, B180/35cl). G/F, Siam Paragon, 991/1 Rama 1 Rd. BTS Siam

The annual Orange Wine Week returns to About Eatery this Jun 12-17. For the whole week, the restaurant and bar celebrates orange wine—essentially white wine made with macerated grapes like a red wine—by offering a tasting flight and deals for different labels. Sommelier-partner Giulio Saverino will be on hand to guide you through the restaurant’s collection of natural wines (bottles made with little to no chemical intervention). Table reservations are recommended. On Jun 14, they’ll also host an orange wine dinner (price TBA). Ocean Tower II, Asoke Soi 3, 02-665-2772

The old Chinatown neighborhood of Woeng Nakorn Kasem may have vanished, but the legendary beef soup of Chew Nuea Wua Raitiamtarn is being kept alive thanks to the grandson of the restaurant's original owner. At Ten Suns' revamped shop-house, Chanyanpat Tiveschayun continues to season and braise his beef for 4-5 hours in accordance with his grandfather's recipe. He also has formidable backing in Seven Spoon’s chef-owner Somkiat Pairojmahakij and indie band Apartment Khunpa’s guitarist, Gun “Ball” Rujinarong. Order your bowl of beef soup (B80) with brisket, plate and shank, or go with a bowl of each separately (B100-120). Wisut Kasat, Bang Khun Phrom, 085-569-9915.

ON THE BAR

Just a Drink Maybe

Canvas

JUST A DRINK MAYBE Why go: The huge selection of gin labels (see opposite). Drink this: AO Show (B300) masks its Broker’s Gin under an amazing array of flavors. 44/3 Thonglor Soi 1, 02-023-7285. Open Tue-Sun 5pm-1am

Thonglor’s new gin bar is a hidden delight. By Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj

CANVAS’S SECOND FLOOR Why go: You won’t get any food at the bars after this; so grab the coconut oil-poached octopus, (B680) here—amazing flavors. Drink this: Sooth Your Soul (B450) makes use of a rare Chiang Mai leaf called bai nium infused in cognac. Canvas, 113/9-10 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 099-614-1158. Open Mon-Fri 6pm-midnight; SatSun 6-12:30pm

J. BOROSKI Why go: Joseph Boroski did the drinks for half the best hotel bars in town, but saves the best stuff for his own little bar. Drink this: There’s no menu. The mixologist asks you a bunch of questions and then serves you something that usually costs about B500. Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 02-712-6025. Open daily 7pm-2:30am

BACKSTAGE Why go: The team are all Diageo World Class contestants. The buzz: Taiwanese PR officer-turned-bar owner Herman Wu saw a gin-bar shaped gap in Thonglor and filled it with the kind of space everyone wants in their neighborhood. The huge selection of gin labels is only rivaled by Soi Nana's Teens of Thailand. The decor: Nestled down the largely residential Thonglor Soi 1, this narrow shop-house draws you in with its enormous gin collection all lit up behind the bar. A neon sign casts a blue light over the brick-dominated room and comes complete with a blinking "maybe" that captures the laidback vibe. Take a high chair at the bar and let the bartender pick a poison to your liking. The drinks: Wu's fellow Taiwanese bartender friend Soso Cheng, of Taipei's Exlibris Bar, is the main guy behind the drinks, which are split into gin and tonic twists and original concoctions. Beauty and Hendrick (B350) is an elegant, well-balanced G&T featuring Hendrick's gin, the cherry-tasting Thomas Henry Blossom Tonic and Aperol. Heading into

COCKTAILS

more creative territory, the AO Show (B300) mixes chamomile-infused Brooker's Gin, with Carpano Bianco (sweet white vermouth made from wine using trebbiano, cortese, and chardonnay grapes), Creme de Cacao Blanc and simple syrup, shaken with lemon juice. While potent, the drink masks its strength in an amazing array of flavors.

Drink this: Earthbeet (B390) is a woody mix of beetroot-infused tequila.

The crowd: Young professionals loosening their ties with an afterwork drink or three and more casually dressed residents of the neighborhood.

BAD MOTEL

Why you should care: With its easy-going vibe, this is a gin specialist bar that's not just for the know-it-alls. A place for meeting friends new and old, Just a Drink Maybe will also start serving Taiwanese food made according to Wu's mother's recipes next month. 44/3 Thonglor Soi 1, 02-023-7285. Open Tue-Sun 5pm-1am. BTS Thong Lo

Q&A launches a huge new menu and loyalty program Asoke’s hidden cocktail bar Q&A has launched a new loyalty program that encourages you to booze your way through 52 classic drinks in exchange for 15-percent discount at the bar for life. There’s also no time limit on how long you take to do it. With these perfectly poured Singapore slings, Pegu Clubs and martinis coming in at roughly B450 a pop, that makes a total expense of around B23,400. But equipped with your lifetime 15-percent discount, it’ll take you just 348 cocktails to make that money back. Get yourself started with a B2,000 package which covers the cost of four cocktails as well as a little book styled like a passport that gets stamped every time you try something new.

Why go: Great people watching and a chill back garden. Drink this: Long Island iced tea is not very sophisticated, but here the twist of lemon makes it refreshing (B350). Next to J Avenue, 331/4-5 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 02-712-7288. Open daily 5pm-1am

BRONX LIQUID PARLOUR Why go: Hideyuki Saito just ranked eighth best bartender in the world in the Bacardi Legacy competition. Drink this: Oil cocktails, which Hide makes using techniques that remove any trace of grease. Try the Umami (B300). Thonglor Soi 25, 02-036-6071. Open Tue-Sun 7pm-2am

CHOW AT THE METROPOLIS HOTEL Why go: It’s open and serving food for 24 hours Drink this: You can get another cocktail here but we recommend the congee (B200), served with giant pa tong ko (Chinese dough). 2802 New Petchaburi Rd., 02-314-8555

OPEN DOOR

Siwilai City Club Lunch, dinner, drinks and everything in between—Phrom Phong’s huge new rooftop lounge aims big. The buzz: Multi-label fashion store Siwilai has now expanded into a vast complex of rooftop restaurants and bars. Six different zones offer everything from tomahawks to grab-and-go sandwiches to cocktails. The decor: Giant tie-dye daybeds and hammocks take over a sand-colored terrace looking out over extraordinary Phrom Phong views. This acts as the focal point for two different wings: one dedicated to dining, the other drinking. On the dining side, The Deli provides grab and go bites and simple snacks, while The Eatery welcomes diners for sit-down dinners. The outside portion here is called The Grill and holds weekend barbecues. Over on the other side, The Terrace acts as a cocktail bar, around which you’ll find the chic tapas bistro City Lounge and Sports Bar for live TV games and whiskey.

16

The food: Six different zones with their own concepts, but there is one common thread: local ingredients to create Western dishes, often with a Thai twist. The Eatery is Siwilai City Club at its most ambitious, offering inventive morsels like a mushroom panna cotta (B350) along with solid Mediterranean mains such as risoni (riceshaped pasta) with clams, prawns and chorizo (B650). The braised Australian beef cheek (B720) is tender and deeply-flavored. Next door, the Deli offers braised beef brisket in ciabatta (B350) and an Angus beef burger with jaew sauce (B350), either to eat in or take away. On our last visit, most people were ordering from the City Lounge menu to eat at The Terrace. Here you’ll find hot and cold tapas that run from simple (duck rillettes and toast, B290) to inventive (fermented pork croquettas, B180 for three).

The drinks: It changes from zone to zone, but they don’t mind you ordering from whatever menu takes your fancy. Q&A and Teens of Thailand alumni Techin Wisedsri overlooks both coffee and booze. Sit outdoors and sip on refreshing tropical cocktails like the yellow mango and dill caipirinha (B320), or go with Siwilai’s own twists on classic spirit-forward drinks like the Black Pearl Old Fashioned (Bourbon, black tea, creole bitters, dried fig, B390). Why you should care: We’re still waiting for the dry season for this place to show its full potential, but early crowds point to it becoming one of the neighborhood’s best night spots (they bring in some great live music and DJs). Time will tell how it plays out for daytime dining. Natcha Sanguankiattichai Central Embassy, 5/F, Phloen Chit Rd., 02-160-5631. BTS Phloen Chit. Open daily 11am-12am

Shabu Lab

NEW AND NOTED

It's Alive Siam's Shabu Lab (430/11-12, Siam Square Soi 10, 02-2517558), treats shabu like a science. Among test tubes and beakers, you're encouraged to create the perfect broth by mixing and matching flavors of tom jaew (sour), ma la (salty), sukiyaki (sweet) and kimchi (salty and sour). Also experiment with dipping like suki, seafood, ponzu, sesame, Chinese and lemongrass, which you can alter by adding more chili, lemon or green onion. We recommend mixing in one of the onsen eggs, prepared at 62.5 degrees Celsius for a super-silky texture. An unlimited feast costs B379/person featuring Aussie chuck and brisket beef sliced right before you. Should your flavor fall short of perfection, you can ask for a new pot and start all over again.

Seoul Food Korean actress sensation and the star of Coffee Prince, Yoon Eun Hye, directs the concept at the Seoul-referencing new cafe By Grace (G/F, Show DC, Jaturatid Rd., 02-203-

1888). Along with popular Korean drinks like the red ginseng latte (B170) and black beans latte (B170), the cafe also features a roasting machine on-site for preparing local beans from Doi Pang Khon, Chiang Rai every couple of days. Don't miss their waffles (from B100), made with croissant dough instead of waffle batter. You can also pick up official merchandise designed by the pop star.

Waffle Fabric Ari's new vintage cafe stems from a fashion brand of the same name. The three-story Chuanpisamai cafe (Ari Samphan Soi 3, 095-554-0638) lets you browse through vintage-style accesseries, swimwear and wedding dresses while indulging in sweet treats. Order up a plate of waffles (B228) topped with fresh berries and honey, or go with the blueberry cheese pie (B88) and Oreo Nutella shake (B148). For something savory, they also do hearty plates of Japanese curry (B138). Pavisporn Potchana and Natcha Sanguankiattichai

Mother May I HHHH Thai. 26/2 Sukhumvit Soi 59, 097-990-5990. Open daily 11am-11pm. B-BBB. Corkage B500. F

Don’t be fooled by the European looks of Mother May I’s white-and-navy glass conservatory, which surrounds a 40-year-old home in the middle of a lush lawn. The kitchen here focuses strictly on traditional Thai cooking, as taken from the family recipes of Thaninthorn Chantrawan, aka Chef Noom of the TV show Iron Chef, who designed the menu. Noom last made his stamp with the high-concept menu at Osha, where classic Thai recipes met with molecular cooking techniques. But don’t expect fancy things here. The thick , picture-heavy menu offers sophisticated Thai comfort delicacies at an affordable price—and the results are surprisingly enjoyable. The appetizer of fried chicken wings with chili and salt (B115) is truly addictive thanks to crispy skins and plenty of garlic, while

A house-turned-restaurant whose name literally translates to “rice” in Spanish, Arroz vies for the title of bestpaella-in-town with the offerings of Spanish chef-owner Victor Burgos (formerly of Thyme), whose portfolio includes stints at Michelin-starred restaurants like The Principle in Hong Kong. Thanks to one of those charming mid-century homes dotted around Thonglor, it has a quaintly residential feel. The colorful tiles, custom-made clay pots and dishware add a requisite touch of exoticism while a little garden provides outdoor seating. The menu balances some chef-driven specials with plenty of Spanish classics. The latter span from tapas to paella, all of which have a bright intensity of flavor. The thin slices of jamon iberico (B750, 50g or B1,400, 100g) explode with umami and nutty notes. The boquerones (white anchovies marinated in vinegar, B650) have a zingy tartness, blasts of garlic and a briny flavor—fresh but strong. The assorted croquettes (B215)

on special are no less muscular thanks to a filling whose blue-cheese kick almost overwhelms the ham and mushroom. There are some seven paellas to choose from, such as the seafood (B1,200 for 2, B2,300 for 4), but also another eight dishes the menu describes as “brothy rice,” a translation of caldoso, which can be somewhere between a paella and risotto. As it’s not served in a pan, you don’t get those amazing crispy bits the paellas possess, but the black creamy rice with monkfish cheek (B460) is still an absolute mustorder. The rice broth just bursts with beautiful seafood and shellfish notes; the chewy bits of octopus add yet another layer of texture to the firm but yielding rice; the monkfish is delicate yet flavorful. If you do go for the paella, i t ’ s h u g e l y s a t i s f y i n g , b u t l e ss restrained. We’d even argue it too is a tad too s alty. Burgos is equal ly comfortable with more refined plating, such as the octopus on a bed of potato parmentier (B750). Here too, the octopus is somehow both tender and chewy, but the lightly charred pimento (paprika) coating takes the dish in a lighter, almost North African direction. In contrast to all this, desserts are underwhelming. Nor is service finedining smooth. But they’re a smiling and helpful bunch; Burgos comes out of the kitchen to greet diners personally; and the wine is affordable (starting B345/glass). As such, we wish Arroz were busier. T h i s i s o n e h u g e l y talented and honest kitchen Bangkok needs to keep.

the stir-fried cha-om (climbing wattle) with clear vermicelli and prawns (B165) comes with springy noodles and leaves. Some of the signature dishes are near perfect, such as the kai ku fu (B120), which elevates a perfectly-cooked minced pork omelette with flying fish roe (though it could do with more seasoning). The flavorful chicken massaman with durian (B220) offers well-stewed, tender chicken meat paired with sweet durian flesh that holds its structure. We just wish the creamy curry were a bit thicker. When playing around with premium ingredients like in the wagyu beef pad yee rah (stir-fry with tree basil, B235), results are also excellent thanks to concentrated flavor and tender meat. It’s just a shame that the intensity of spices overpowers the quality beef. Make sure you also stay for their desserts, the best of which is a sweetand-sour sorbet (B120) topped with the traditional components of a miang kham (shallot, ginger, lime, roasted coconut). Wrapped in wild betel leaves, the sorbet explodes with tangy flavor before mixing with the delicious crunch of the miang kham. Despite it’s fancy looks, Mother May I is one of the better Thai restaurants in ThonglorEkkamai—an inner-city escape that shuns the tourist atmosphere and delivers great food.

Bookworms of Bangkok are sure to be familiar with the historic Neilson Hays Library (195 Surawong Rd.), a cultural landmark of the city since it opened in 1922 under the reign of King Rama 4. Now almost 100 years later, the old building faces structural challenges, including faded walls, cracked ceilings, creaky floors, old drainage systems, poor air-conditiong and more. The essential repairs are estimated to cost B10 million, although much of this has already been donated by generous partners. Now, the library is calling on help from the public to raise the remaining funds through an online crowdfunding campaign dubbed "The Neilson Hays Library Conservation Project." So far, the project has already raised B42,300 out of its B500,000 goal within the first day. Those who wish to make a contribution can do so at asiola.co.th/en/campaign/neilsonhays to help the project reach its target within the next 41 days. Those who pitch in will be eligable for library memberships, access to special events and even the chance to name a book shelf in return for their generosity. Designed by famous Italian architect Mario Tamago, the iconic Neilson Hayes Library building is known for its neo-classical structure and leafy surroundings. On top of being home to some 17,000 books, the library also hosts frequent art exhibitions, live music nights, book clubs, workshops and the popular second hand book sales that see books go for as little as B20.

FILM

Electro-pop duo Oh Wonder adds another Bangkok show

Opening (June 8)

THE VOID (USA)

Horror. After taking a wounded man to an understaffed hospital, a police officer suffers a series of strange incidents at the hands of mysterious hooded figures.

After the original show sold out within just eight minutes, concert organizer Vijicorp announced last night that the band would be performing an additional show on Jul 31, a day before the original show. The news was met by mixed responses from Thai fans, some of whom celebrated a new chance to grab tickets, while others were quick to point out that an additional show robs fans who got tickets for the first show from being the "first" to see Oh Wonder in Bangkok. Netizens have noticed that Vijicorp are also organizing a concert for three-piece American alternative band Lany at the same location (DND Club) on Aug 2, making that date unavailable for the second Oh Won-

der show. However, some have pointed out that the Jul 31 date should've been announced first in that case, or better yet, the organizer should've picked a bigger location to accommodate all the fans. A similar incident occurred when an extra show was added for the Britney Spears concert, with many fans furious about an additional show happening a day before the original, leading to an online protest against Thaiticketmajor to swap the tickets. Right now, it's still uncertain as to whether any action will be done to meet the Oh Wonder fans' complaints.
