INTERVIEW
Phichai “Eak” Kaewvichit, 43, is a full-time motorbike taxi driver at Ratchathewi BTS station and also one of the stars of “Accidentally Professional,” a photography exhibition at Craftsman Roastery.Through his Instagram @phichaikaewvichit, Eak has amassed 46,000 followers thanks to his harmonious architectural photography. We met up with him at the gallery, where we spoke about his hobby and inspirations.
“I was just working every day with no goals and it was depressing.” THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID
NEW-Upfront-BK#760-5APR2019-2.indd 4
How did you get into photography? I work as a motorbike taxi driver. At one point, I realized that my career and who I really am were two different things. I’m a big fan of the arts and wanted to spend more time with myself. So on my break I now go and take photos, capturing whatever I think is beautiful, like shapes, shadows, lights. My photos would probably get thrown away in a contest because they don’t follow any rules, but I don’t care because I just want to present what I see. I’m just being myself and there are flaws. If we kept worrying about techniques, it would overshadow our real character. I also hardly look at any photography exhibitions, but I look at other art exhibitions like sculptures, paintings, drawings. Tell us about this exhibition? If I’m being honest, I have very little knowledge about art or how to take photos—all my photos are just a reflection of how I see things. Where did you learn to take photos? I took the film camera class at Siphraya Polytechnic College over a decade ago but I never did anything with it. I only just started putting photos on Instagram in April last year. At first I had like 1,700 followers and most of them were foreign photographers, I looked at their work, they looked at mine. The Thais who followed me were the ones who knew me in real life. How do you find your shots? I normally park my motorbike and walk for hours, because you can’t see any details when you ride the bike. I usually go around Sam Yan, Siam, Silom, Sathorn.
What made you decide to post your photos on Instagram? I joined Instagram because I felt I needed to do something for myself. Career and family are important, but I also needed somewhere to express my true self. Am I just going to work for money until I die? I needed to be myself, too, to be happy. Before this I was just working every day with no goals and it was depressing, but now I’ve found myself. What are your tips on finding yourself? Don’t think, just feel. Feel what you like or don’t like, then just do it. Thoughts always stop you from doing something. You also need to have some freedom first, then your identity can emerge. Everyone is different and difference is the real you. Schools and books always block creativity and try to change you to fit into the social standard. There is no standard in life, there is just freedom. Freedom to be yourself. What’s the feedback from your family? They are happy for me. At first they didn’t understand why I was doing it and thought I should have just spent more time making money, but I was stubborn and just kept doing it, sneakily. What’s next from now? My next exhbition should be at Barbali Bistro on Phra Athit Road. Have you ever thought of quitting your job as a driver to be a photographer full-time? No. Now that I’ve taken photos of Thailand, I want to take photos of other places like India and show it in my own way. Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj

Ah, the ‘90s, when music was real, man. None of this mumble rap. Chart-toppers dressed in all-white and sang from the heart. If you pine for those simpler times, here’s good news: two of the era’s biggest boy bands, Westlife (Jul 26) and Backstreet Boys (Oct 24), are coming to show us they’ve still got moves after all these years.
OLDIES From an unboxing Youtube granny to an octogenarian indie group to the oldest Ikea employee in the world, Bangkok went old-person crazy in 2018. The latest superstar in the making could be the 70-year-old barista of Mobidrip x Coffee Roaster, whose love of a slow bar brew and catchy turn of phrase (“Brew Today, Die Tomorrow”) is winning hearts online.

The year’s drama to end all dramas (well, it’s up there) has come to a close. After backlash of epic proportions, Taco Bell Thailand has installed beef on its menu and all was peaceful in the land. That is, until some folk realized they still don’t have beans. Still. No. Beans. The beef is not quite over.
GETTING AWAY WITH IT AirAsia were accused of “promoting sex tourism” by Australian activists who took the airline to task for using the phrase “Get off in Thailand” in advertisements posted around the city of Brisbane. AirAsia apologized and pulled the ad promoting new direct flights between Brisbane and Bangkok, but probably won out in the old “all publicity is good publicity” stakes. Not cool.

Start your day at the beachy, palm-fringed Summer Bowl (261 Thonglor Soi 13, 089-894-2646), where acai and smoothie bowls are served with Hawaiian flair using organic produce from local farmers. For lunch, fill up on decadent plates of spaghetti “Bottagara” (garlic chili, parsley, rock lobster, dried gray mullet and pesto, B390) and Bigoli “Al Ragu’ D’anitra” (braised duck meat ragout) at Al Dente (The Commons, 335 Thonglor Soi 17, 097-078-1968), or take a lighter approach with a heavenly falafel and hummus pita (B220) at Hummus Boutique (999 Sukhumvit Rd., 092-819-8131). For dinner, reserve an exclusive seat at the swanky Table 38 (G/F, Ashton Morph 38, 8 Sukhumvit Soi 38, 083-399-9888), where you’ll be guided through eight or 12 creative courses (B2,600 or B4,900 per person) by chef Andy Yang, whose Thai restaurant Rhong-Tiam won a Michelin star in New York back in 2009.
To Do Spa addicts can go all out at The Penthouse by BFF (4/F, J Avenue, 323 Sukhumvit Soi 55 [Thonglor], 02-712-9666), with treatments like the 75-minute Anti-Blemish Facial using London’s high-end skincare brand 111Skin (B6,500) or the 120-minute package which includes an intense hair treatment using Philip B’s Russian amber imperial shampoo, a full body massage and deep scalp toning (B6,200). If you’re a mani-pedi lover, head to Allure Hand and Foot Spa (1/F, The Commons, 335 Thonglor Soi 17, 062-395-6522) for their signature 90-minute “Alluring Moon” skin purifying organic spa treatment (B1,200/hands and B1,500 /feet). Basic mani-pedi services are also available—a simple gel manicure costs B700 while a pedicure is priced at B800.
To Drink Sample the latest sustainable, organic and biodynamic wine trend at the low-key Rose Natural Wine Bar (Sukhumvit Soi 38, 081-553-3585). For a cross-cultural approach, head to Som Tam & Chardonnay (88/333 Sukhumvit Soi 55, 020-909-052) where you can pair your wine with Isaan staples like somtam (B140-B270). For ice-cold Beerlao (B150) and punchy Asian cocktails like the Lazy Sour (B320) paired with full-flavored Laotian recipes and an old-school funk soundtrack, get down to the noir-industrial Funky Lam (235 Thonglor Soi 11, 02-050-0469). Alternatively, go stateside at the vintage Americana-filled Middle Bar (2/F, Blue Dye Cafe, Sukhumvit Soi 36, 094-156-6166), where you can work your way through their no-nonsense cocktail list from “No.1” to “No.10.”

One of Bangkok’s finest barbershops heads across town GROOMING
Chavin “Kwan” Nantaterm of Thonglor’s Black Amber and his crew of professional barbers have expanded their dapper gentlemen’s grooming service to the bustling business district of Sathorn. Similar to the Thonglor original, there’s a retro 1920s gentlemen’s club feel to this barbershop, only slightly more upscale and sophisticated—think dark wood interiors complete with luminous art deco-style lighting, oldschool barber chairs, black marble countertops and gold-framed glass shelves displaying fancy grooming products and liquors. The professional barbers can work their magic on just about any classic gentlemen’s hairstyle, from slicked back and Ivy League to undercut pompadour and neat quiff, or you can ask them to recommend one that best suits you. A cut costs B700 (an extra B100 with shampoo), while just a styling is B300. The barbers are perfectionists, so be prepared to spend up to 45 minutes having them sculpt your hair. Fancy giving your beard a little TLC? A beard styling costs B500, whereas a soothing, hot towel shave is B600. You will also be offered a choice of complimentary drink, either a glass of single malt or a cup of coffee or tea. M/F, Empire Tower, Sathorn Rd., 064-936-9595. Open Mon-Fri 10am-9pm; Sat-Sun 11am-8pm

Island Fresh
Heading to Phuket this Songkran? From treetop cocktails to jolly izakayas, the island’s never been hotter. By Kankanok Wichiantanon Cafes
Campus Coffee Roaster
Kak
In its moodily rustic new digs beneath the Romanee Classic guest house, this Phuket favorite continues its legacy of in-house roasted coffee using beans sourced throughout Thailand. Pair the cafe’s signature Jelly Coffee (coffee jelly topped with frosty milkshake, B75) or a basic hot drip (B90) with a slice of chocolate fudge cake (B55) or banana bread (B45).
Taking its name from the crunchy pork cracklings it sprinkles on all its dishes, Kak is a tiny—and we mean tiny—surf shack-like hut hidden down a small side street of Phuket’s Yaowarat that doles out classics like mixed crispy pork belly and grilled pork noodles (B70) and stir-fried chicken noodles topped with crispy pork (B60). The place is often packed to the rafters with locals, but if you’re lucky you can claim one of the bar stools out front.
6 Krabi Rd., 092-218-9292. Open daily 8am-6pm. www.fb. com/campuscoffeeroaster
Khun Nai Sam Tea & Restaurant This quaint Sino-Portuguese tea house’s faded baroque-style facade gives way to red brick walls, vintage picture frames, Chinese lanterns, and leather booths. If the weather’s on your side, enjoy a tea set (B95) in the petite courtyard out back, or opt instead for their classic somtam (B60) or larb (B60). 16 Phuket Rd., 090-915-9289. Open daily 11:30am-10:30pm. www.fb.com/khun.nai.sam
Restaurants AOI Phuket
Minimalist wooden decor and affordable, real-deal Japanese classics make a change from Phuket’s usual fancy Japanese-hotel restaurants. Rolled-to-order sushi (B80-B130) is served alongside hefty pork katsu curry (B220) and fancy grilled wagyu on rice (B710). To drink, besides Japanese beer, they also have sake and umeshu. 77/4 77/25 Moo 6, Louang Pho Chaem Rd., 062-242-2330. Open daily 11am-9:30pm.
Azzurro Ristorante Rawai Beach’s small Italian eatery channels the island’s Sino-Portuguese heritage in its lush tropical murals. Angel hair pasta with blue swimmer crab (B390) and grilled Australian flank steak (B580) are served to both refined white-clothed tables beside the indoor pool and more casual semi-circular booths next to a stage for live music. Wines are available by the glass and bottle. 57/45 Moo 7, Rawai, 088-821-7387. Open Mon-Sat 5-11pm. www.fb.com/insouthphuket
EKO Izakaya Colorful, vintage Japanese prints lining the walls, hanging red lanterns and upturned beer crates for seats conjure a fun and cheerful atmosphere. The menu reads like a greatest hits of casual Japanese cuisine: expertly charred delicacies from the grill (think salmon teriyaki, B218), good ol’ fried stuff (chicken karaage, B120); donburi (raw fish, B218) and flavorful sushi bites like the salmon aburi (B218). 54 Chanacharoen Rd., 063-564-4535. Open daily 5pm-midnight. www.fb.com/EKOizakaya

240/14 Yaowarat Rd., 081-750-7273. Open Mon-Sun 11:30am-2pm; 3-7pm. goo.gl/27LevF
Maimorn Cuisine For a traditional southern feast in air-con mall comfort, head here, where authentic, pungent dishes are rustled up in a bright and spacious setting, dotted with dangling ferns, brown leather seating and illustrated walls. Try the baked pineapple fried-rice (B250) with melinjo leaves in coconut milk or the dried shrimp dip and assorted vegetables (B195). For dessert, the durian with sticky rice and coconut milk (B190) makes an interesting choice. G/F, Central Floresta Phuket, Wichitsongkran Rd., 086-9527340. Open daily 10am-10pm. www.fb.com/maimorncuisine
Seasoning Far from the chaos of the city, Cherngtalay’s Thai-Italian restaurant takes on a cozy standalone brick house hidden among the trees. Oak floors, raw concrete walls and lush dangling plants set the scene for fusion food that maintains authenticity, like the crispy soft shell crab spaghetti with crabs’ eggs (B195), or the feast-like grilled rack of pork ribs slathered in barbecue sauce (B270), served with a side of mashed potato and salad. 2/1 Cherng Thalay Soi 3, 080-520-8666. Open Tue-Sun 11am-9pm. www.fb.com/seasoning.phuket
Sedo Izikura If it weren’t for the paitan ramen (B180) with its fat chunks of braised pork and mellow broth, or the grilled octopus in wasabi sauce (B120), you’d probably mistake this spot for a tattoo parlour thanks to dark wood decor and black and white murals. Don’t leave without trying the organic noodles, made in-house daily, which hit the sweet spot between soft and chewy. Wash your meal down with a solid range of Japanese beer, sake and cocktails. 7/1 Suthat Rd., 087-627-4082. Open Tue-Sun 5pm-midnight. bit.ly/2HwBiqd
Three Monkeys Spread out beneath a canopy of palm leaves, the upstairs treehouse offers floor seating at low coffee tables, while downstairs an industrial-style dining hall sets the scene for a feast of sushi,
Azzurro
Western plates and traditional southern Thai food—think chunky prawn dip served with vegetables and coconut milk (B350), or succulent chunks of charcoal-grilled pork neck (B250)—alongside cocktails and house-roasted coffee. 105 Moo 4, Chao Fa Rd., 098-010-8838. Open daily 7am-9pm. www.fb.com/threemonkeysphuket
Unni’s Restaurant Colorful veggie-filled dishes parade from this tiny white-tiled house to tables on Nai Harn Beach. For breakfast, try a green smoothie bowl (B240) with a bacon bloody Mary (B260), for lunch a chicken avocado wrap (B299) and for dinner, hearty Swedish meatballs with mashed potato and lingonberry jam (B299) or a panang curry (vegetarian, B169/chicken, B189). 14/69 Moo 1, Nai Harn Beach, Rawai, 091-837-5931. Open daily 8am-10pm. www.fb.com/unnisnaiharn
The Zula Phuket Don’t mistake this Turkish spot for another of Patong’s pretenders. This is the real deal, from the hummus (B130) and the Beyti kebab (B370) to the coban kavurma (lamb casserole, B370) and Turkish tea. The vibrant, busy interiors mash up French bistro and industrial-chic, with faux brick walls and tiled flooring punctuated by an array of hanging plants, lights, airplanes, fake birds and cages—it’s a little messy, but we like it. 5 Sirirat Rd., 076-540-827. Open daily 11am-11:30pm. www.fb.com/thezulaphuket
Hotels
U Zenmaya Phuket This five-star hotel has undergone a refreshingly modern makeover. Sino-Portuguese influences—ceramic blue tiles, polished concrete floors, deep mahogany elements—adorn the spacious rooms, which come with Jacuzzis and balconies overlooking the quiet Kalim Beach just north of Patong (rates start at B2,339 a night). Other facilities include an ocean-view lounge, a romantic cliff-side restaurant and bar, a gym, a library and a spa. 6/181 Kathu Rd., 076-336-888. www.uhotelsresorts.com/ uzenmayaphuket
Xinlor House Within an unassuming townhouse in the Old Town, head past rows of vibrant green potted plants and you’ll find an exclusive three guest rooms, each with a fresh white and blue color scheme (from B1,500). The suites come with either a hot tub (B3,000) or balcony (B2,650)—ideal for observing the surrounding Indo-Chinese architecture and local goings on. 78 Dibuk Rd., 081-891-7733. www.fb.com/xinlorhouse

CHIANG MAI
Just 15 minutes’ drive from Chiang Mai, lush greenery envelopes 324 House Bar Cafe (www. fb.com/324housebarcafecnx). Open from 8am all the way through to midnight, the restaurant serves a menu that charts khao pad nam prik kapi (shrimp paste fried rice with mackerel, B125), khanom jeen nam ngiaw (rice noodles with spicy northern soup, B95) and succulent barbecue ribs (B240), as well as a huge selection of cocktails, craft beer and wines. At lunch, sit inside where cool air-con meets red brick walls, polished cement floors, Edison bulbs and wooden furniture. Come sunset, move out to the fairy-lit lawn for occasional live music.
Simple Pleasures Cafe (bit.ly/2unnQeB) in Doi Saket makes use of its lush plot of land with a backyard full of fresh, organic produce, an outdoor open kitchen, and pavilion seating close by the canal. The small, Lanna-style wooden house belongs to an Australian/ Dutch couple who make everything from scratch, from bread and muesli, to yoghurt, chili jams and curry stocks. The cafe’s signature Moroccan shakshuka (eggs poached in a spiced tomato sauce served with a homemade bread, B170) uses fresh tomatoes from the garden, while leafy greens and vegetables are wrapped in savory crepes with pesto (B140) and turned into beetroot dip with veggies (B90). Desserts include simple treats like apple crumble (B90), lemon cheesecake (B90) and fudge brownie (B70).

DEAL ALERT

Tim Butler has created a decadent new menu for Bunker EAT THIS
After the departure of chef Arnie Marcella and a short closure, Sathorn hot spot Bunker has reopened with a new menu that’s been overseen by one of Thailand’s most decorated chefs, Tim Butler of Eat Me. Butler and chef Lorin Janita of Phang Nga‘s Esenzi are set to take Bunker’s season-driven cuisine in a decadent new direction. The idea is to serve feast-like food that chefs would cook for other chefs. This translates to mountains of uni in the DIY uni nachos (B2,500/100g tray) and a kombu-wrapped whole Maine lobster (B2,100), charcoal-grilled and served with parsley garlic butter. With Butler at the reins, quality cuts of meat are a given—take the Ohmi Wagyu nuggets with tonkatsu sauce and caviar (B1,400) or the whole pig’s head, deep-fried and served half or whole (B500/900) with dipping sauces. Some Bunker signatures remain, like the addictive scallop “tots” with yuzu koshu and crispy rice (B375) and the smoked bacon bao (B160). To drink, you can expect a new wine list and an updated array of cocktails curated by sommelier Andreas Pergher and Bunker’s bar team. 118/2 Sathorn Soi 12, 02-234-7749

15 Check out Phloen Chit’s uber-stylish new hangout
After formal training at France’s Gastronomicom pastry school—followed by stints in the kitchens of Sadaharu Aoki and Hugo & Victor in Paris—pastry chef Arisara “Paper” Chongphanitkul joined Issaya Siamese Club before moving to Saawaan and gaining last year’s Top Tables title of Best Pastry Chef. Now, she’s opened a new dessert restaurant, ICI. From an elegant house with a garden, she creates macaroons in everything from salted egg to caramelized onion flavor (B85/piece) and eye-popping desserts like her Insta-famous Starfish (B450), with coffee-vanilla mascarpone mousse. 24 Sukhumvit Soi 27, 02-007-3113
Bangkok street food queen Jay Fai is about to star in a new Netflix series. The mastermind behind the enduringly popular Chef’s Table, David Gelb, has shared via Twitter that a spin-off called Street Food will air on the streaming service from Apr 26. And the first photo used to promote the show is of none other than Thailand’s own Jay Fai. Since being awarded a Michelin star in 2017, the septuagenarian superstar chef has been thrust into the limelight for her B800-1,000 crab omelet. The nine episodes of the first series will focus solely on Asia.
Situated on Soi Somkid in a charming two-story, mid-century house, Siri House from property developer Sansiri gathers together an exciting mix of foodie names, including brunch favorite Luka and the second-coming of Sukhumvit mainstay Quince— now poised to follow the same wood-fired oven and charcoal-grill focus as its buzzing Saigon sister branch. There’s also Jacqueline, a classic cocktail bar that takes its name from Jacqueline Kennedy and its drink creations from nightlife mainstays like Maggie Choo’s, Cactus, Iron Balls, and Sing Sing Theatre. 14/2 Soi Somkid, Phloen Chit Rd., 09-4868-2639

Saawaan
Saawaan HHHH Thai. 39/19 Suan Phlu Rd., 02-679-3775, 063370-1991 Open Mon, Wed-Sun 6-11pm BBBB
Saawaan’s “elevated street food” has caused plenty of buzz since the restaurant’s opening on tree-fringed Suan Phlu in early 2018. Chef Sujira “Aom” Pongmorn (Top Tables Best Young Chef 2019) cut her teeth at Sra Bua transforming Thai food into mini molecular masterpieces. Here, her delicate reinterpretations of everything from fermented beef salads to spicy-sour soups chart a less gimmicky progression for Thai cuisine. Your 10 courses abound with multi-layered dishes, both delicious and beautiful to look at, and come at a price (B1,950) that’s the cheapest of any Michelin-star tasting menu in town. That Saawan is onto a good thing is evident right from the dimly lit dining room whose assortment of antiques, patterned wallpapers and silver cloud motifs offer a high-end but characterful vibe—everything you’d hope for in a project of restaurateur Fred Meyer (Issaya and Pizza Massilia). An amuse bouche in the form of a half-open egg nestled on a bed of straw kicks things off with a delicate approximation of the sticky, sweet street dish of kai look koey (fried hard-boiled eggs

in tamarind sauce). Dishes thereafter are listed plainly according to cooking method (Steamed, Fermented, Curry), though, conversant waitstaff help fill in the gaps. ”Raw” is a tartare of Japanese hamachi fish dressed like laab (rice powder, chili, lime) that packs the zesty kick of somsaa sauce. “Dip” is a deep-orange blend of crab fat and curry paste that you mop up (a little awkwardly) with sticky rice. “Stir-Fried” is a triumphant hybrid of pad kaprao and pasta. Ribbons of Songkhla squid stir-fried with black squid ink and holy basil stand in for fettuccine, joined by a green veggie “Thai pesto” paste and grated cured duck egg. While flavors stick close to authentic, produce does dip into pricy imported territory—though in the case of “Charcoal,” a take on Isaan’s khor moo yaang, we may have traded the Iberian secreto pork for an inferior local cut if it meant a nam jim jaew marinade with a little more oomph. Wow-worthy moments abound in the desserts of pastry chef Arisara “Paper” Chongphanitkul, whether it’s a textural pandan, coconut and pumpkin pudding, or innovative Thai-inspired petit fours (that bitter orange tart). The wine list and pairing option (add B2,500) is superb, but we say seek out the local tea pairing (B680) for wild and unexpected flavors. Rarely do restaurants arrive so fully formed as Saawaan.

16 Billy’s Smokehouse is a barbecue beef paradise The buzz: You might know Billy Bautista from Osito Unique Spanish and La Monita. Here, Bautista takes on low-and-slow smoked meats with an all-American barbecue approach that nods to his California roots. The decor: Billy’s Smokehouse takes over what used to be El Osito tapas restaurant (which is set to return under a new concept upstairs—stay tuned for more), and the formula remains. Soaring, raw concrete walls decorated in psychedelic artwork surround chunky wooden tables that invite sharing. A casual open kitchen stands at the back of house, where the crew bust out barbecue platters fit to burst. The food: Beef brisket takes center stage, normally made using Aussie wagyu with a marble score of five (fatty but not extreme) and smoked for upwards of 22 hours with hickory—“we couldn’t find any local wood that didn’t taste like an ashtray,” says Billy. A charcoal-black crust seasoned only with salt and pepper holds flesh so tender and juicy it falls apart, ringed in the telltale red-pink sign of serious ‘cue. A 200g portion of brisket will set you back B750, but we recommend taking one of the giant platters for B2,700. One will easily feed four and also includes
OpenDoor-BK#760-5APR2019.indd 18
beef rib (origins can vary from US “Choice” to Japanese wagyu depending what’s on the market), a full rack of ribs done California style (“a little more chewy and meaty than in Kansas”), smoked Sloane’s sausage and a heap of sides including an awesome, unsweetened cornbread—they’ll send out more free of charge on request. The “Billy’s Burger” (B310) is another must, modeled on an In-N-Out “Double-Double” with its two well-crusted, thin patties, simple cheese slices and house-made potato bun. Nodding to this team’s Mexican chops, the barbecued cod fillet (B320) in a rich almond mole packed with over 20 spices is one seriously tasty dish. The drink: Whiskey makes the natural choice, especially in one of the bar’s excellent bourbon mojitos for B325. Other cocktails range from B110-B500 while promising top-shelf spirits from Ford’s Gin to Rebel Yell Rye. Why we’d come back: Giant plates of finger-licking smoked meat that come in at under B1K per head, including all the sides your stomach could wish for. 17 Bangkok’s newest omakase brings Japan to Victory Monument
18 This market aims to build an environmentally conscious community
Pullman King Power has recently unveiled Tenko (G/F, 8-2 Rangnam Rd., 02-680-9999), a new omakase restaurant led by chef Goji Kobayashi. For now offered across just two 10-person dinner seatings per evening, the 14-course Nigiri menu (B4,500 for appetizer, sushi, soup and dessert) and the 21-course omakase (B6,000 for appetizer, sushi, sashimi, warm dish, soup, and dessert) highlight fresh, seasonal imports from Japan, like Takeshima A4 wagyu beef and Kyushu red sea urchin. Situated in a lush garden surrounded by koi ponds, the restaurant’s traditional blond wood counter is balanced with a contemporary reception area featuring brown leather sofas and modern art.
Model Market (57 Sukhumvit Soi 53, 085-223-4324) is built from upcycled furnishings and materials scavenged from closed-down restaurants and temporary events like Wonderfruit. The focus on sustainability doesn’t end there. Non-biodegradable single-use plastic is banned from the site, while all leftover food is composted by a sustainability organization. The indoor-outdoor market space is currently hosting pop-ups from favorites like Peppina for pizza, Tropic City for cocktails, Bootleg Brothers for craft beer and Meng Kee for roasted duck.

From the faded brick walls, dark-wood furniture and arched windows right down to the carved wooden bar and patterned rugs, this sepia spot will transport you to WWI-era Birmingham. Channel Tommy Shelby with a straight Glenfiddich 12 Year Old (B320/glass or B2,700/bottle), a pint of Stella (B260), a craft beer (like Brewdog Dead Pony, B250) or a whiskey sour (B320) paired with a plate of slowcooked beef tongue stew (B280) or pork chop with garlic and herb sauce (B380).
TABLE TALK
El Mercado 490 Soi Phai Singto, Ratchadaphisek Rd., 099-0783444. Open Tue-Sat 11pm-midnight; Sun 11-11pm This deli-slash-bistro may represent the antithesis of Bangkok’s current locally sourced ingredients obsession, but the foodies who swarm its open courtyard don’t mind. They come not only for the imported cheese and cold cuts (is there a better selection in town?), but for the well executed Mediterranean dishes that do justice to their seasonal ingredients. Order from the big chalkboards, where a frequently changing list of specials showcase the best of what’s fresh in.

Sushi Misaki is equally minimal inside, only 10 seats around one sushi counter where Shizuoka-born chef Masahiro Misaki (formerly of Nippon Tei) serves an omakase meal of about 20 items, including appetizers, 12 nigiri sushi, a sushi roll, tamago, miso soup and dessert. 20 Sanam Pao’s edgy bar dedicated to all things Korean Bangkok has long been obsessed with Korean pop culture, so it’s about time for our nightlife to catch up. Hidden on the third floor of an old, industrial building right next to BTS Sanam Pao, Overseoul (3/F, 1029/12 Phahon Yothin Rd.) livens up a residential area with neon pink and blue lights, cheesy Korean pop music and edgy bare concrete walls. Easy-drinking Korean tipples include makgeoli (from B321), Korea’s answer to Thai sato , and Itewon (B261), a special blend of liquor and fresh fruits. Food keeps it traditional and twist-free—think dishes like tteok-bokki (stir-fried rice cakes, B181) and pork jab chae (stir-fried glass noodles, B231).
21 Be transported to the Himalayas at Phahurat’s Bhutanese restaurant Phahurat’s Little Bhutan (436/4 Chakphet Rd., 091-717-5148) is your chance to sample food from the land of Gross National Happiness. With a Bhutanese chef and owners, authenticity is guaranteed in the vegetable or chicken momos (B60/70), which—for those in a hurry—can be ordered from a hole-in-the-wall take-out counter as well as in the simple, compact dining area. The uninitiated should start with Bhutan’s national dish, ema datshi (B199), a thick stew of chilis, onions, tomato and cheese curd, though there’s plenty to explore here like the jasha paa (B99), a spicy chicken dish.
22 Soho Hospitality brings Naples to Soi 11 Pizza lovers now have a very tough choice to make on Sukhumvit Soi 11: the pliable NY-style pies of Soho Pizza or the Neapolitan offerings of sister restaurant Cantina (Eleven, 26/3 Sukhumvit Soi 11, 02-821-5113). Both come from Soho Hospitality (the people behind Havana Social and Charcoal, among others). Anthony Falco, a big-name pizza consultant formerly of New York’s Roberta’s Pizza, was called upon to train the Cantina team on the art of 48-hour-fermented pizza dough—taste the charred base and tangy tomato sauce in the diavola pizza (B380), which comes topped with mozzarella, spicy Italian salami, black olives and basil.

From: Cosmos Brewery by ThaiBev, the people behind Chang. Snowy Weizen, ABV4% From: Est.33 by Boonrawd Brewery, the producers of Singha and Leo. Taste: After catching a pleasantly hoppy whiff, we thought our mission was complete. BK Pick!
From: Est.33
Taste: Well, well, it seems Singha corporation is able to put out nice beer after all. This one tastes just as a beer should: nicely caramelized, savory but balanced, fizzier than the rest of the bunch but overall, very tasty. Verdict: Stock up. Price: B58 Get it at: 7-Eleven
Huntsman Yuck! Cloudy Wheat Beer, ABV4% From: Cosmos Brewery. Taste: Looks insipid, smells like something between perfume and drip-tray dregs, and tastes nasty too. Best leave this one on the shelves, unless you're desperate. Verdict: Febrezey. Price: B53 Get it at: FamilyMart

Their Strip Berry Chocolate wax is specially formulated with this goal in mind, while their limited edition Desert Rose wax comes packed with aloe vera and chamomile extracts to help hydrate and soothe the skin, and to reduce redness and irritation after treatment. They also offer more advanced treatments such as Strip Powerpac, a patented Advanced Fluorescence Technology available exclusively at Strip that involves specially filtered light to weaken hair follicles and delay hair growth. Strip prides itself for its high standard of hygiene, meaning no double dipping of spatulas and no re-use of wax. Pre-sealed disposable waxing packs are offered for every customer. The cost: Starts at B500-1,800 for a hard wax Brazilian (B900-3,000 for the men’s version, “Boyzilian”) and B3,000-12,000 for Strip Powerpac. 4/F, Central Embassy, Phloen Chit Rd., 02-160-5671.
