HOT OR NOT
Robert Brands
WIZ KHALIFA
Billionaire politician on human rights and Thai “democracy”
As you all already know, ugly shoes are hot, which is great news for the Wiz Khalifa x CPS Chaps collaboration, because shoes don’t get much uglier than this. With soles that look like they were cut from the remains of Marshmallow Man and color-ways that would be right at home on a kindergarten carpet, here stand your cut-price alternative to Balenciaga this season.
INTERVIEW
After quitting his billion-dollar family business,Thai Summit Group, earlier this year, Thanathorn “Aek” Juangroongruangkit, 40, became leader of the new-gen Future Forward Party. Their idealistic policies quickly gained traction among cosmopolitan Bangkokians weary of Thailand’s military regime—so much so that the junta attempted to void the party’s registration. Sitting in his two-story home library in Samut Prakan, we got to grips with Aek’s dreams for Thailand.
My first part-time job was when I was 10, working in a warehouse over the school holidays for B25-30 per day.
“Coups will be history if I become prime minister”
I would love to buy dinner for the Thailand Want Election group. Even though the military tried to scare them with legal charges after they staged the protest, they still fight for other people.
THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID
Upfront_BK 743_Jul 27_18_02_New.indd 4
I was not a good student and often got into fights as a teenager. Before I had something to believe in, I used to place my friendships above everything. Later on, I realized that this is equivalent to the patronage system.
I was planning to go climbing in Antarctica but now I’m too busy and had to cancel the project. Power belongs to the people. This is the definition of democracy, plain and simple. Coups will be history if I become prime minister; Thailand will not have military intervention ever again.
I hate big corporations. I never wanted to be a businessman.
Thailand still hasn’t moved past the 1932 revolution [transitioning from absolute monarchy to constitutional democracy]. If people treated each other equally in the first place, there wouldn’t have been a coup.
Thailand’s awareness of human rights is still very low. There is not much difference at all between the past and present.
Power comes from anything that allows you to overrule others. Culture, money, violence— anything that can make others submissive to you.
Trust is worth more than money—that’s what I learned from working in my family business. You have to trust and be trustworthy.
Many people feel hopeless about Thai politics—so don’t lose your fire, there are people out there who feel like you.
Bangkok is too crowded, I rarely go there unless I have errands to run.
I don’t think the Future Forward Party is an activist party. If you look at the political parties in other countries, they all have these policies.
I am not a religious person at all, though I have my own god who no religion can describe.
Of all the backpedaling and mixed messages that went around during the April 2017 “ban on street food,” chief Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) spokesperson Vallop Suwandee’s claims about Khaosan Road were among the biggest. First it was under threat, then it was being saved, and now it’s been announced that all vending stalls will be removed to create a more scenic area. And isn’t that whatevery tourist wants.
I was living my prime time before I became a politician. My business hit its highest record in 40 years, my personal life had a nice balance, but I don’t have much spare time these days.
My dreams never had anything to do with money. I had many romantic dreams like to work in an NGO in Africa, to be a teacher.
I think I’m a great father. I work hard and may not spend as much time with my children [aged two, six and eight] as other fathers but I always make sure it’s quality time.
KHAOSAN
I wouldn’t have become a politician if I didn’t believe I could deliver all the big changes that I’ve promised. What Thai people want is rights. They deserve the freedom to express themselves and chase their dreams. Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj,
B5,000 HOT POT You’ve tried B5,000 sushi. You’ve gone gaga for B5,000 French tasting menus. And, frankly, you don’t eat wagyu tomahawk costing anything less than B5,000. Well, now it’s time to say hello to the B5,000 hot pot, courtesy of a restaurant from Niskeo called Ryunabe. And if the crowd through the floor-to-ceiling Sathorn windows is anything to go by, they’re onto a winner.
TRANS FATS Thailand is getting tough on foods with trans fats, those partially hydrogenated oils that taste so damn freakin’ good. This is bad news for Dunkin’ Donuts, which is having to review all the oils it uses, but good news for importers of American goodies such as Krispy Kreme and Garrett popcorn, who’ve had to follow this rule for a long time. Most importantly of all, Pablo Cheese Tarts are safe. Phew!

RUN, BANGKOK, RUN!
Time to get your sneakers on.
Gone are the days when you could rock up to a Bangkok run 30 minutes before the flag came down. With the country’s top runs selling out in a matter of days, Lumphini Park at 6am has never looked livelier. Runs are becoming ever more extreme with 100km trails, 24-hour races and other ultra-endurance events designed to push the mind and body to its limits. We spoke to some of Bangkok’s most dedicated runners to seek out Thailand’s top races and resources. By Jack Thomas*
Sasie Smittipatana
Sasie Smittipatana As the first Thai person to join the “Seven Continents Club,” Sasie Smittipatana is such an accomplished runner that she’s completed marathons on all seven continents and the North Pole. What do you love about running? It’s a way to be free. When I am in the wild, I am at one with nature. I also like the social aspect of running—running with friends keeps me motivated. How long does a beginner need to train for a marathon? It depends on your fitness level, as well as your mentality. I gave myself about four months of consistent training before running my first marathon. I believe in incremental improvement and slowly building up to the full distance.
Do you have a race day preparation ritual? I get up and meditate on race day, to mentally prepare myself before the run. I drink lots of water. I go over the running route in my head visually. What’s the hardest part of a marathon? Usually at 25km when I am just over the halfway point and starting to lose motivation. Seeing other runners slow down can be contagious—I sometimes start to doubt myself. What advice would you give to any new runner?
What do you eat on race day? Usually one banana, one piece of bread, and half an energy gel before the start. What’s your favorite race? The Comrades. Period. It’s called the greatest human race and it will humble you. Twenty-thousand people run it each year, and about 40 percent DNF [did not finish] the year I ran. The toughest part is they have super strict cut offs—they only give you 12 hours to complete the 90km distance. It is held in South Africa from Durban to Pietermaritzburg or reverse.
It is important to take it slow and have fun. I still don’t run with a watch and I’m not too crazy about pacing or forcing myself—I focus more on feeling “good” on the run. Think of every step as an improvement.
TEAM SPIRIT Find motivation in Bangkok’s running communities.

A COMMUNITY OBSESSED If you’re looking for running buddies, hit up the friendly Bangkok Runners group, whose members are always happy to get newcomers started— after all, runners love talking about running. Once you’ve proved your colors by attending some meetup events (www.meetup.com/Bangkok-Runners) you’ll be permitted into the private Facebook group (see goo.gl/FUEa7U).

RIVER KWAI HALF MARATHON
One of Thailand’s oldest and most iconic races. Expect an uphill first half before turning around for an easier finish. Sign up for quarter (B600) or half-marathon (B800) at www. amazingfield.net. Sep 9, 5:30am. River Kwai Village, Sai Yok, Kanchanburi.
Nam started running at the age of 20 to help combat stress and improve her physique. She is now a very active member of Thailand’s running community, organizing the Pong Yaeng Trail (PYT) and The Navigator Thailand Race while putting at least two Iron-distance triathlon races and a 100km trail run under her belt each year. What do you love about running? The simplicity. How long does a beginner need to train for a marathon? I would say one should progress from shorter distance races at their own pace before registering for a marathon. To be able to “race” well, one needs a lot of experience but nowadays quite an alarming number of runners “walk” a marathon just to cover the distance in seven hours and get a finisher T-shirt.
entific and functional rather than superstitious. I don’t eat before I run, so I would normally just get up, drink a big glass of water and try to go to the bathroom. I usually prepare all the race garments and gear the night before. What’s the hardest part of a marathon? Most people would say the last 10km but for me, getting out of bed and to the start area at the right time is what I find tough— races that start at an ungodly hour like 3am are my worst fear!
Do you have a race day preparation ritual?
What advice would you give to any new runner?
I would say it’s more of a routine—I like it to sound more sci-

enjoy the process of training and racing at shorter distances first. The marathon distance is a bit of a fad these days—every new runner just wants to “finish” a marathon. Rushing to run a marathon when you are not ready could have dire consequences, like injuries. What’s your favorite race?
RELENTLESS RUN
The epic Relentless Run (B2,400) spans 24-hours. There are also 12- (B1,500) and 6-hour (B1,000) options or you can break the 24-hour race up with teams of 2-4 (B8,000). Proceeds go to Relentless, a charity that works with vulnerable and trafficked children and HIV prevention. See www.gorelentless.org for more info. Nov 24–25, noon. Krasang, Buriram.
I prefer trail races these days; they’re just much more enjoyable. Ultra-Trail Mount Fuji (UTMF) is my number one at the moment, closely followed by the Courmayeur-Champex-Chamonix (CCC).
AYUTHAYA MARATHON
Adirek Soonsai Tunt is the manager of Ari Running Concept Store and his fascination with running culture led him to spend a year in Kenya learning from the world’s best. What do you love about running?
What advice would you give to any new runner?
It’s the easiest kind of exercise— there’s no age, gender or location restrictions, just one pair of shoes and you are ready to go.
Set small goals and go step by step.
How long does a beginner need to train for a marathon? At least two years, depending on your age, gender, weight and current fitness level. Generally, those over 30 years old respond better to endurance running. What’s the hardest part of a marathon? It’s the training that’s tough but if you get it right and stick to your plan, the marathon will be comfortable.
What do you eat on race day? A simple breakfast of bread and black coffee and perhaps an energy gel. What’s your favorite race? Buriram Marathon 2017 was my favorite. The weather was great and there was a lot of cheering from the sides which helps to drive me on.

There’s also the dazzling Prism Sideboard (B895,000) with its striking indigo and beechwood straw marquetry, inlaid by hand to create a geometric pattern. Other highlights include the Pavé Tables (from B245,000) made from brass and lacquered eggshell, whose forms are inspired by ancient gold cuffs, and the Basilica Floor Lamp (B185,000) and Otto Table Lamp (from B60,000), which take their inspiration from the Acrolith statues of ancient Greece, contrasting materials like dark-bronze patina with the luminous whites of calcite crystal or onyx marble. 1/F, Gaysorn Village, 999 Phloen Chit Rd., 02-656-1392. Could Samui flight prices be set to soar?

Some good news for our friends in the north. Bangkok’s favorite purveyor of cheap-as-chips steak has set up shop in Chiang Mai. The new Arno’s (114/1 Ratchapakhinai Rd., 053-273493. www.fb.com/arnos.chiangmai) offers the same formula you’re no doubt familiar with: 75-100-day dry-aged beef served from a butcher’s window, cooked to your liking and paired with simple, comfort food sides. It costs just B525 for a 250g, 75-day dry-aged rib-eye, or B3,900 for a kilogram of Arno’s Thai-raised, wagyu-crossbreed beef that gets aged for 100 days. The building’s burnished red facade continues inside with bare brick walls. There are also a few Thai dishes as well as Arno’s intense and juicy burger (B200).

SAMUI
Did you rejoice back in 2008 when Thai Airways broke Bangkok Airways’ monopoly on direct flights to their privately-owned Samui Airport? The move has seen flights remain at a steady rate over the past decade, but this may be in the balance following last year’s codeshare contract between the two airlines. According to The Nation, starting this September, Thai Airways will end their Samui flight service and instead offer transfers to the island via Bangkok Airways. Whether this will see prices soar to new heights, only time will tell. Right now, there are over 20 roundtrip flights operating daily between Samui and Bangkok, at an eye-watering minimum cost of B9,580. If these prices go up any further, perhaps it’s time to seek out a new holiday destination.

Set in an airy two-story house in Chiang Mai’s Old Town, Nuan Cafe and Bistro (Prapokkloa Soi 9, 086-573-2999. www.fb.com/nuancafeandbistro) makes you feel right at home. The 50-year-old building once belonged to a diplomat and it feels as if not much has been tampered with since, save for a touch of polish. Decked out with vintage furniture and potted plants, the cafe specializes in creative drinks and desserts—they’ve even caught on to the latest coffee-in-a-cone trend with their signature Heart in Hand (latte served in a waffle cone, B89). For a sweet treat, try the Yellow Mellow (juicy mango topped with vanilla cream cheese ice cream and a waffle wafer, B69).
Could this be the final year when Phu Quoc’s “hidden island gem” status rings true? We think so, which is why you need to get to Epizode Festival now. In its third year for 2018, the giant EDM beach party takes place over the new year and pulls in a giant lineup of DJ hot shots. Last year saw artists like Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos and Dixon rock the stage. Scheduled for Dec 28, 2018Jan 8, 2019, the festival has already released its early-bird tickets (from B3,388). After that, prices will rise to B4,912. Artists to be confirmed—keep an eye on www.epizode.com.

Notes from the Bangkok food scene

Thailand’s answer to Marou opens its doors
SEEING (MORE) STARS Elements is gunning for two Michelin stars and not being shy about it. Visiting from Amsterdam, Okura’s two-star man from Ciel Bleu, Onno Kokmeijer, revealed the new Japanese seasonal-produce menu they’re banking on. Available now.
BEAN-TO-BAR CAFE
The seed for Sathorn’s new bean-to-bar chocolate cafe, Kad Kokoa, sprouted when founders, Nuttaya and Panitchin Chunhasawatikul, fell in love with a beautiful piece of land in northern Thailand. After studying the art of bean grading in the U.S., they began to grow cacao at their own private estate before opening their cafe here in Bangkok. With a distressed wooden exterior in tones of brown and duck egg blue, this leafy spot looks like it’s been plucked right out of the northern capital—in fact, the wood was indeed brought down from Chiang Mai. Inside, large windows let in plenty of light and customers can get a taste of the production process at their mini cocoa factory. Besides from their own single origin beans, the couple source from other growers across the north, allowing them to explore the varying flavors of the region. From Chiang Mai’s floral notes to Chanthaburi’s nottoo-sweet cacao, you can get a taste of their 70-percent pure hot chocolate (B140), with a perfectly chewy chocolate cookie (B75) to match, or cool down with their devilishly sweet Kad Meringue Ice Choc (B165), complete with chocolate pouring sauce. If you’re left craving more, you can purchase chocolate bars to take home or even cocoa butter soap, so you can smell dreamy, too. Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Soi 17, 083-684-3921. Open Tue-Sun 11am-5pm
LAO AND PROUD Time was your average NGO worker wouldn’t be seen dead without a Beerlao. One too many craft beers and homebrews changed that. Now, though, Lao nationals are voting on a new beer that’ll arrive in Bangkok shortly.
CURRYING FAVOR If you want a seat at Aug 25’s khao gaeng special at Surface then too bad—it sold out within hours. That’s probably because former Nahm head honcho Prin Polsuk is cooking. Good news is, it’s the first in a new chef-collab series. Stay in the loop at goo.gl/FnTgRA. PERFECT PAIRING

Seoul-born Chir Chir counts over 100 restaurants from China to Singapore, and is known for its adventurous take on chimaek, in other words Korea’s love of pairing chicken and beer. Order from “crispy,” “garlicky” (our pick) and “spicy” varieties at B260 for a half bird worth of wings, tenders and drums, or B490 for a full bird served along with potato wedges and fried topokki (rice cakes). Their other signature, Chir Cream Beer (350ml/ B169 and 650ml/B269), is Singha beer topped with freshly whipped, slightly sweet, cream. 6/F, CentralWorld (Atrium Zone), Ratchadamri Rd., 02252-2204. Open daily 10:30am-10pm
Hong Kong-based California-meets-Mexican fast food franchise Cali-Mex Bar & Grill has opened in Bangkok. The menu highlights nachos, burritos and tacos, alongside California-style grill dishes like ribeye steaks, chicken parmigiana and Atlantic salmon. In line with their 20 Hong Kong branches, each table comes with its own custom-made beer tap. The franchise plans to add three new outlets around Bangkok before the end of the year—in Silom, Sathorn and Thonglor. Holiday Inn, 1 Sukhumvit Soi 22, 065-210-0658. Open Mon-Sun 10am-2am
The man behind the new Virtual Wine Cellar delivery app, Aman Sachdev, is calling it Bangkok’s cheapest way to order wine straight to your door, and it’s a doddle to use. From the home screen simply set the price range you want (from B650 to B23,000) then add in other parameters like type of wine, country, region, vintage and brand. The app then comes back with all the available bottles and promises to deliver them anywhere in Bangkok (from 10am-10pm) within a couple of hours. The wines themselves come from the cellar of Sachdev’s restaurant, La Casa Nostra on Sathorn, which is a good thing. Currently only available on iOS devices.

“You cook up a mean pig intestine” might sound like an odd complement to pay a chef, but in the case of 100 Mahaseth’s Chalee Kader it’s well deserved. After Bangkok went through a disastrous first run at nose-to-tail dining, Kader and his restaurant partner Randy Noprapa brought it back into the fold— this time in a way that doesn’t suck. The menu is packed with courage-testing dishes that draw heavily from Isaan (like a playful sai-oua hot dog for B190) and surrounding Southeast Asian regions, and almost everything—from the earthenware plates to the produce—is sourced locally. Reading menu items like braised beef entrails with drops of bile (B260) or grilled pig’s heart with coriander salad (B300) will make most unacquainted with 100 Mahaseth squirm. If the restaurant does anything well, it’s rewarding diners for taking the plunge into the world of local offcuts. Dishes like the beef entrails in spicy soup (B240) really make you question all the fuss over premium meat. The soothing, peppery broth is absolutely delicious, as are the generous bits of tender cow’s in-

Persian. 75 Sukhumvit Soi 3/1, 02-655-6460. Open Mon-Sat 8am-4am, Sun 8am-midnight. BB-BBB. No corkage charge
Amid the chaotic Nana neighborhood, there’s a good chance you’ll miss Shater—a Persian diner tucked behind a little coffee joint. Despite appearances, the fact that it has stood its ground for 18 years signals it mustn’t be such a well-kept secret after all. Last time we were here the place was full— all Middle-Easterners. The decor is nothing to write home about, forgoing the pomp of some other Persian restaurants with its plain faux-stone walls, faded brick columns, glass-covered tables and leather cushioned seats—arguably very similar to any other Soi Nana Middle Eastern diner. The service, however, is standout. Attentive staff will guide you through the menu (all listed in Persian) and give their recommendations, while the wait for food is routinely minimal. The tender and flavorful braised lamb shank (B400) comes in a tasty, thick and aromatic sauce that exudes turmeric, saffron and other spices begging to be mopped up with
nards steaming inside. It’s a reminder that, when cooked well, the strange stuff can be a knockout too. With that said, jumping head-first into bizarro-ingredient-land isn’t always a gold mine. The slushy texture of the charcoal-roasted bone marrow (covered in a mountain of perilla seeds that will get stuck all over your teeth, B360) is sadly too underseasoned to carry the weight of the off-putting mouth-feel. That hasn’t stopped droves of young food bloggers from ordering it for the Instagram kicks, though. To its credit, 100 Mahaseth isn’t all guts and brains. There’s enough civilian-level dishes to make it safe for picky eaters. The Thai pork shoulder jerky with Sriracha (B250), Surin-bred “Thai-gyu” tomahawk (B2,500) and a nicely grilled ox tongue (B490) are just a handful of the more approachable things anyone can try. The setting, too, will feel pretty cozy for all thanks to a down-to-earth layout with floor-to-ceiling windows, wood plank tables and old-school molam and Isaan string music playing in the background. The attentive and warm service staff do a great job as well—especially when it comes time to guide you through the daunting menu for the first time. We like 100 Mahaseth, largely because it doesn’t throw its concept in your face. It’s an unpretentious restaurant focused on sustainable, good food, and you should try it.

a big plate of steamy saffron rice with an eggy and dense side of savory saffron cake. What really has us hooked is the lusciously thick tahina (B120). Not to be confused with the sesame seed paste tahini, tahina adds lemon juice and garlic to the mix, resulting in something that tastes like a blend of yogurt and hummus. On the downside, Shater doesn’t serve the best hummus (B120) in Bangkok—some extra garlic and salt would give it the kick it needs. Nevertheless, the crisp yet soft naan makes a delicious companion. We also enjoy Shater’s mixed kebabs (B400)—sticks of minced beef (well-seasoned but a little chewy), grilled chicken (aromatic and soft) and lamb (perfectly grilled and tender)—though they don’t quite have the wow-factor. Big thanks goes to the citrusy and light shirazi, a refreshing cucumber and tomato salad (B120) that offsets the food coma. In an area that’s saturated by hit-or-miss Middle Eastern cuisine, this unassuming spot is a solid bet. Plus, it opens till 4am—good to know for next time you suffer those late-night hunger pangs.

Urbani is run by the world’s biggest truffle dealer The buzz: The Umbria-headquartered Urbani Tartufi boasts of being the world’s number-one truffle dealer. Now, the brand (which also runs stores and delicatessens from New York to the Netherlands) has opened this fine-dining restaurant atop Bangkok’s Sathorn Square building. The vibe: Head up to the 39th floor (which it shares with Koi Japanese restaurant and club) and you’ll encounter an opulent blend of shining black marble and dark woods accented in golds and greens. A fresh seafood display and a bowl brimming with one-million baht’s worth of truffles crown the bar, while the dining room’s plush Italian style shouts business-deal lunches and old-school romance. Executive chef Gonzalo Ruiz has moved over from Lebua, and sends out meticulously-presented dishes from a semi-open kitchen. The food: Two set dinner menus (B3,900 for five-courses/B5,500 for seven-courses) burst with truffles from almost two-thirds of their dishes. The agnolotti al tartufo provides the most outstanding example of how delicious this delicacy really can be—fresh homemade pasta parcels, filled with a mouth-wateringly rich truffled wagyu beef ragout, topped off with creamy bearnaise sauce. Next in line, the

pan-roasted sea bass’s crisp skin is complemented by almond-encrusted sweet pumpkin. Be sure to save space for the velvety mango and truffle mousse— proof that truffles are not just for savory courses. In the unlikely event that you’re still hungry, dip into a bag of their locally-produced truffle durian chips. The drinks: Urbani makes its own truffle-infused Grey Goose vodka—sweet, earthy and complex. From their 200+ wines, a sparkling glass of Australian Chandon Brut (B290) makes the perfect start to the meal, followed by the white or red Saint-Esprit 2015 Cotes-du-Rhone (B300/320 per glass or B1700/1800 per bottle). Why we’d go back: Urbani represents serious fine dining at its best—not to mention that truffles are strangely addictive. We’re keen to try out their newly-launched and very affordable set lunch menu, too (B590/790). Angela Symons

Here, amid a bustling deli atmosphere, Lenzi draws on the recipes of his grandmother, Nella, who he credits with teaching him how to cook. Cured meats and cheeses from Lenzi’s own family farm in Tuscany feature throughout the menu, as toppings on thin-crust pizza (B280 for a margherita) and in dishes like maiale tonnato (roasted pork loin with quail eggs and tuna sauce, B450).
The lively Charm Eatery and Bar has recently opened its third Bangkok branch, this time in Ari (Phahon Yothin Soi 5, 02-279-8991). Alongside their usual Southeast Asian fare, this latest opening comes with some added extras, including lunch sets from B170 between 11am-3pm, with an added option for refillable drinks, including iced coffee, Thai iced tea and chrysanthemum tea for B59. Open till midnight daily, they also have generous 5-9pm happy hour deals, offering buy-one-get-one-free on draft beers, house wine and selected whiskeys, as well as live music.
Following the success of its Thonglor branch, Roots has opened another joint right beside BTS Surasak (G/F, Bhiraj Tower, 33, 31 Sathorn Rd., 082-091-6175). Here, coffee snobs can get their fill of fruity cold brews and pour over, with beans sourced from the north of Thailand—you can even write on a postcard with a message for their farmers. The interiors come in signature industrial style, with wood and concrete offset by warm lighting. The espresso-weary can order a rich and creamy coffee shake (B180) or try the Cherry Cola Float (B180), in which cold brew is mixed with cherry syrup and topped with vanilla ice-cream.

Who makes Bangkok’s best... Peanut butter The clean-diet revolution has propeled healthy fats to the top of the agenda, meaning there’s never been more Thai-made peanut butters on the market. Forget chemical-laden Jiffy and Skippy, these local brands keep it clean and natural. Here’s the low down on which ones have got us hooked.
Yuck!
Grains (B80)
Probably the thinnest and runniest consistency—yes, it’s easy to spread on toast, but it misses that creamy decadence that we long for in a good PB. The taste is overly sweet with only a subtle hint of saltiness; some of the grainy texture the name promises even seems to be lumps of sugar rather than nuts, which makes it pretty hard to swallow. Verdict: So sweet it left us sour. www.fb.com/grainsbkk
Taste test_ BK 742 Ju27_18_New.indd 21
Wealthy (B55)
On opening the jar, we were met with a pool of oil, which is only natural for peanut butter, but the gritty, sticky and dry texture made it almost impossible to stir it together. Its pasty consistency doesn’t spread well, either, and the flavor leaves an oily, salty taste in the mouth. Verdict: Oil spill. www.fb.com/Wealthyspread
Mr. Yummies (B89)
This peanut butter appears to be going for the health-food angle with its roughly blended raw ingredients. Unfortunately its gray tinge, chalky texture and off-putting smell all combine to make this a pretty unpleasant contender. Verdict: Don’t waste your calories. misteryummies.com
BK Pick!
Healthy Mate (B69)
Hands down the best consistency and flavor. The natural, fresh taste has a hint of roasted flavor, with a satisfyingly chunky texture that still remains soft and creamy. PB&J sandwiches, cookies, salad dressings—we could eat this peanut butter with just about anything. Verdict: Will you judge if we eat straight out the jar? www.fb.com/healthymatetoday
Runner Up!
Paweenee’s (B99)
This dark colored peanut butter has got the most robust, intense flavor of the lot. With a roasted scent and a creamy texture, it comes with a honey-like aftertaste, despite boasting “no added sugar.” It even has hints of Ferrero Rocher, which made total sense once we found out that they’ve added hazelnuts into the mix—lush. Verdict: A sophisticated spread. www.fb.com/Paweenees

Migrant Co-Workers Here’s how the new wave of giant co-working spaces from abroad is changing the local scene. By Dhipkawee Sriyananda Selley
C
o-working kicked off in Thailand back in 2012 when Ekamai’s Hubba showed Millennial entrepreneurs that what they needed wasn’t an office costing B30,000 a month but a desk and a strong Wi-Fi connection for B3,000. Since then, co-working spaces have taken over. According to the Bangkok Post, the number of co-working spaces in Thailand will rise to 150 by the end of 2018, in line with an estimated 25-percent increase in market demand. The first half of 2018 has seen a wave of big international operators move into the city. With their stylish facilities spanning multiple floors and thousands of meters, they are on the verge of eclipsing local, small-scale businesses often found in modest, cafe-like spaces. They include big names like Amsterdam co-working brand Spaces (from B4,490/month), whose first industrial-chic branch spans 1,260 sq meters across the top floor of Phra Khanong’s Summer Hill mall. Their latest opening at Chamchuri Square comes with more refined decor and spans a whopping 3,281 sq meters, includ-

ing 143 individual desks, a cafe and a business club which seeks to emulate their “community-first” concept by providing opportunities for networking and socializing. “A quality working environment is key to attracting the world’s best talent,” says Noelle Coak, Thailand country head of Spaces, adding that the co-working space is open to professionals of all types. “We believe that true creativity comes from diversity. Our central club allows you to meet new business partners from different fields. We designed this place to embrace socializing within the workplace. That way, the office will feel more like home.” Another co-working brand moving in on the Bangkok scene is Singapore’s JustCo (B990-7,500/month)— currently the largest co-working space provider in Southeast Asia. Its newly opened location occupies 3,200 sq meters of AIA Sathorn Tower, housing quiet pods for personal space, as well as hot-desking areas, a cafe, meeting studios and event spaces for members to collaborate, declutter and relieve stress. With modern Scandi-chic furnishings, brand-organized events and quirky, playful elements like a hanging swing, a foosball table and golf corner, JustCo encourages interaction among its members. “JustCo members will automatically become part of a connected community with options to network and attend social and professional events to learn new skills
Spaces
and build their own connections within the community,” says Kong Wan Long, co-founder and head of enterprise sales, JustGroup. As international co-working brands go all out, local players are striving to keep up. Glowfish, which began life in Asoke Towers in 2010, has opened a highly ambitious second branch in Sathorn (from B500/day or 10,000/month). Here, you’ll find a super-luxurious modern space filled with art and tech installations, 26 serviced office spaces, three conference halls (that can be connected to create one mega 400-sq-meter event space), five smaller themed meeting rooms, plus an in-house Kuppadeli cafe and fitness centers like Base and Physique 57. Another hip local co-working brand is Siam’s Growth Cafe & Co (from B190 for 3 hours), which occupies three floors of the old Lido cinema building with a cafe zone and shared co-working space, event spaces and private meeting rooms. “Although we’re right in the city center, the atmosphere here is like a serene oasis hideaway with lush gardens,” says Kampanart Leosirikul, co-founder and partner. “What’s essential to any co-working space is to foster a sense of community and belonging so new business opportunities can flourish.” Other local operators include Draft Board at Orakarn Building in Chitlom (from B350/day or B5,900/month) and Pencave at
“ As international co-working brands go all out, local players are striving to keep up.”
Naiipa Art Complex on Soi Sukhumvit Soi 46 (from B320/day or B6,000/month). Further international players having touched down in Bangkok this year include Singapore’s The Great Room (from B9,300/month) and the US’s WeWork (from B8,000/month). And what of the place where it all started? Hubba is also moving with the demand for better and better co-working facilities. The Post reports that the brand plans to open four new sites and is seeking partners to expand into shopping centers and office buildings. But with more than a dozen Bangkok co-working spaces having opened in 2018 alone, their own start-up vision is looking like an increasingly tough playing field.
