That the city’s coolest vintage market is popping up by the river This Jan 26-28, the hippest of hip flea markets, Made by Legacy, is heading to Sermsuk Warehouse on the Bangkok riverside. With Taksin Bridge as the backdrop, over 200 vendors will sell everything from antiques to vinyl records to classic motorcycles to limited-edition Levi’s jeans—some at a very pretty price-tag. This time around the six-year-old market is even adopting an eco-friendly theme with stalls dedicated to flowers, plants and gardening items. That Julie Byrne is coming to play an outrageously cheap Bangkok show The American folk singer, whose 2017 album Not Even Happiness scooped mentions in year-end lists from Pitchfork to the Guardian, will perform an intimate show at Surasak’s Jam on Feb 11. With tickets priced at just B200 (only available at the door) we envisage the miniscule venue full to bursting.

That Siam’s about to lose one, potentially two, iconic cinemas Rumors took off late last year that landlord Chulalongkorn University was preparing to demolish Siam Square’s Scala and Lido cinemas, which date back to the late 1960s. Last week, Chula’s property management office confirmed Lido will close in May—claiming the building is no longer safe for visitors— but were more ambiguous about the fate of neighboring Scala Theater. A statement posted to Facebook said any decision to demolish Scala would ultimately belong to theater owner Apex.

That Dusit Thani’s had a temporary reprieve The iconic modernist hotel that’s occupied the corner of Silom and Rama 4 roads since 1970 has postponed its date of demolition until Jan 5, 2019. The hotel had originally been scheduled to make way on Apr 16 for a B37-billion new mixed-use complex, but will remain open longer in order to welcome more visitors, according to hotel developers Dusit Thani Group. That a new venue lets you drink beer and throw axes at things The Golden Axe Throw Club (Lat Phrao Wang Hin Soi 67, 063-6540600) is like a bowling alley for lumberjacks. It comes with eight lanes, wood targets and, most importantly, a bar. To ensure your safety, the place follows the same standards employed by most gun ranges. Drinks (from B30 for a shot of soju) are also strictly monitored. You’ll receive a warning if you go beyond two drinks, and there’s one coach for every two people to ensure that your axe-throwing technique is up to snuff. One lane for one hour can accommodate 1-5 people, and costs B500 per person.

Welcome to the future of Bangkok 7-Elevens: dockless bike sharing, LED advertising, electric car plug-in ports (for all those electric cars you see in Bangkok). All this and more can be found at Pak Kret, Nonthaburi’s latest franchise of the convenience store. Meanwhile, all state agencies are still using paper-trail filing techniques drawn up when men went to work in bowler hats and Field Marshal Sarit was giving the orders.

Hot: Roofop bars

Not: Winter

As the new year dawns, the cool season’s final finishers are creeping past the post with a couple of new alfresco spots for you to check out before the temperature switches back to its egg-frying intensity setting. You’ll find them on the rooftops of Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park and Park Hyatt hotels. See page 19.

Hot: Marketing

Not: Topography

About the closest thing to a hill in Bangkok is the on-ramp from Charoen Rat Road onto Highway 1. But you wouldn’t know that if you were to read the names of this city’s latest developments: Ari Hills, Ladphrao Hills and Phra Khanong’s Summer Hill are all in various states of completion on decidedly flat pieces of land citywide. Marketing 1; Topography 0. See page 12.

INTERVIEW Muay Thai boxer Somros Polcharoen, better known as “Nong Rose,” 21, reached a career high on Jan 6 when she became the first transgender fighter to compete in Europe (losing on points to French fighter Akram Hamidi). Although not Thailand’s first prominent transgender muay Thai fighter—Parinya “Nong Toom” Charoenphol had her story told in the 2004 film, Beautiful Boxer—Nong Rose recently won her struggle to fight at Thailand’s biggest muay Thai stadium, Rajadamnoen. Here, she talks about the ups and downs of her muay Thai career. When did you start muay Thai training? When I was eight years old. How did you get into it? My uncle is a former muay Thai fighter and he started training me. My older sister and my twin brother are also muay Thai fighters. Did you always want to become a muay Thai fighter? I never really had any other dreams when I was a kid. I’ve always had such a bond with muay Thai. How many wins have you had so far in your career? I’ve had around 80 wins—15 of those were knockouts—out of 150 fights in total.

Hot: Political parties

Not: Military service

Despite having spent the past three years declaring to journalists “I’m a soldier” whenever he didn’t want to answer a question, Dear Leader chose last week to announce that, actually, that isn’t strictly true. The once commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Army has given up soldiering for a life dedicated to politics, just in time for the registration of all political parties—with a headstart for everyone but the opposition.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

4

Did you wear makeup in all those fights? Yes. I always wear makeup every time I fight. Rajadamnoen originally banned you from fighting. Why was that? Because for any standard muay

Thai stadium, you cannot wear a top while you fight. How did you manage to overcome that? Thanks to Dr. Songchai Ratanasuban [arguably Thailand’s most prominent muay Thai promoter], who stepped in and helped me on this. The first time I fought there was in August, 2017. Have any male boxers ever refused to fight you? Yes, they have. If I look at it positively, maybe they knew I was quite good and wanted to save themselves from getting too hurt. But to look at it from a different point of view, maybe they were afraid to lose to a kratoey. What other obstacles have you experienced in the ring? At times, opponents have mocked me and looked down on me. I’ve beaten them all in the fight, though.

Compared to a few years ago, do you think people are more accepting of you now? Yes, definitely. I feel a lot more accepted now. How often do you train? I train twice a day—morning and evening—from Monday to Saturday and on Sunday I only train in the morning. What do you want to achieve from muay Thai in the future? I want to open my own muay Thai camp for foreigners. How do you feel about the LGBT situation in Thailand? I think it has improved so much, people are much more accepting. I’ve also seen a few of them getting married. Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj

Bangkok Island

After treating us to an Opposite Mess Hall popup in Nov and Dec, chef Jess Barnes has taken over the reins at Viva Market Thonglor where he’s introduced an all-day dining menu laden with Opposite staples like duck waffle and bone marrow dumplings—get a taste with the B340, three-course “express” lunch. It’s all a prelude to Barnes’ full-on comeback, 12:51, which we’re told will open upstairs within a few months.

Yuval Schwok, the owner of Charansanitwong’s underground, occasionally controversial, live music venue The Overstay, is gearing up to unveil another creative space with a difference. Taking over a reclaimed metal barge, Bangkok Island will set sail along the Chao Phraya River in early 2018, combining live music bar, independent art space and workshop venue.

Aesop’s

After being forced to close its doors on Dec 31 (due to the landlord wanting to build another condo), this secret cocktail bar is set to rise from the dead. The owners are seeking out a new home for it around Sukhumvit, though no location is confirmed yet. In the meantime, you can still drink at Backstage, which is run by one of Locker Room's owners.

Set to open in a tree-shaded spot on Sala Daeng in time for Songkran, this Greek restaurant is an offshoot of Sydney’s three-decade-old Aesop’s restaurant (nothing to do with the soap). They’re promising a “social dining” approach— think sharing dishes, nightly emcee, plate smashing—which ought to place it a notch above the more sterile competition.

Training Ground

Better Bites Eight doctor-approved tips for Bangkok foodies Brekkie

If you read BK Magazine on a regular basis, chances are you love to eat. But how do you manage street food binges on Dinsor Road with balanced meals that give your body what it needs? What does your body actually need anyway? We recently teamed up with Bumrungrad Hospital’s Dr. Chulaporn Roongpisuthipong to get the answers to some of your most common food-related health questions.

What’s one of the biggest myths about healthy eating you commonly see right now? Probably the fear of carbohydrates. People with otherwise healthy lifestyles do this a lot, and it’s something that doctors definitely don’t recommended. Carbs are one of the five essential nutrients your body needs to function properly, and it’s OK to consume them.

We love street food but everything we read says it’s bad for us in the long term. How can we make healthy choices here? There are two things to keep in mind: hygiene and cooking method. This can sometimes be hard with street food, but check the stall to make sure they are keeping things clean, and always go for food that is cooked properly, not left out in the sun. Please stay away from the raw stuff, too.

I’m 25 and my metabolism is great. How long can I expect this dream to last? The metabolism in the human body usually starts to degrade around age 25-35. Then, you have to be a lot smarter about how you eat or else you are going to pay for it down the road with health problems.

In terms of eating out, what are some of the least healthy things I could order? One thing you should make a conscious effort to avoid is sugar. The maximum daily amount is only six teaspoons, any more than that over a long period and you are looking at future health problems like diabetes. Desserts, soft drinks and many common sweet foods can put you over that threshold easily if you are not careful.

Nuea Toon Nang Loeng

We love to put eggs on top of fried dishes like pad krapow. How bad are eggs for our cholesterol? Actually, eggs are fine, and they’re one of the best protein sources for our bodies at any age, especially children and the elderly. We’ve conducted medical research that proves this. We added an egg to the meals of high-cholesterol patients for a period of time, and it turns out the eggs they ate daily didn’t have an adverse effect on their cholesterol levels.

Is it better to work out on an empty stomach or eat a snack first? All we see are conflicting opinions everywhere.

Jeh Oh

Eating before a workout is fine, but how much food depends on what you are trying to do. If you are about to hit the gym, a banana is really all you need to get you through the workout. A marathon, on the other hand, is going to require a larger, more protein-rich meal. It boils down to how you feel. If you get hungry during workouts, then eat beforehand.

We’re worried a lot of organic products these days are just marketing gimmicks. Is there any way to make sure our organic choices are really healthy like they say they are?

Paris Mikki

Not in Thailand, unfortunately. We don’t have the proper certification bodies in place to guarantee organic food as authentically organic.

We’ve heard eating before bed can make you gain weight. Is that true? That’s not true. It depends on the calories you consume each day. If you have a long day without any meals except a single plate of pad krapao topped with a fried egg, you won’t gain any weight. On the other hand, a single meal with 2,000 calories, like a massive breakfast, will still affect your weight even if you don’t eat anything else during the day. It comes down to the number of calories you consume and burn, not when you eat them.

Luka.Moto sees the cafe serve up coffee and eggy dishes alongside a showroom from Motorrad, BMW’s motorcycle brand. After dark, the place transforms into Funky Lam Kitchen, a restaurant dedicated to modern Laotian cuisine complete with a molam soundtrack. Expected to open Feb or Mar.

Ministry of Crab On Asia’s “50 Best Restaurants” list for a few years now, the Sri Lankan crab specialist offers its signature crab in four ways: chill crab, pepper crab, garlic crab and Sri Lankan crab curry. Chef Dharshan Munidasa has stopped by Bangkok a few times, and announced we would be getting a Ministry of Crab by the end of last year. Well, that didn’t happen. Better luck this year?

to own restaurants carrying three Michelin stars in three different cities, but he currently holds 18 Michelin stars at more than 26 restaurants across the world. Word has it he’ll be opening a restaurant at IconSiam (see below), where he’ll be joined by another 100 restaurants from around the world.

Roast, Roots, Ocken and The Commons It’s going to be a big, big year for Think Beyond, the group behind the much-loved Roast and Roots. In April, Roots will open a standalone cafe (or “coffee experience bar”) right beside BTS Surasak. Next door will be Ocken, which promises a more experimental, fine-dining approach compared to Roast. Speaking of which, that particular brunch nirvana will be opening a new spot somewhere around Siam in mid-2018. Back in Thonglor, The Commons will unveil a new-look second floor with a garden barbecue vibe—heavyweights Daniel Thaiger, Birds Rotisserie and Seven Suns are already on-board.

Property Edition The arrival of Marriott’s boutique brand conceived by legendary hotelier Ian Schrager—the first guy to ever coin the phrase “boutique hotel”—has long been promised as part of the ultra-luxe MahaNakhon Tower development at Chong Nonsi. 2018 looks to be the year. There are only 10 other Edition hotels in the world right now, all glamorously well detailed and frighteningly expensive. For the rest of us there promises to be “five levels of public space.”

IconSiam Set to open in October, the mega B50-billion riverside development by three property giants—Siam Piwat, Magnolia Quality Development and Charoen Pokphand—will transform an 80,000-sq-meter plot of land on Charoen Nakhon Road into something approaching a brand new suburb. It will consist of the Mandarin Oriental Residences (two luxurious skyscraper and condominiums, 70 and 52 floors), 100-plus restaurants, a 3,500-seat auditorium, a “Heritage Museum” and the giant Takashimaya mall from Japan.

Capella The “ultraluxury” hotel brand from Horst Schulze, former long-time president of Ritz-Carlton, arrives beside the Chao Phraya in the final quarter of 2018. The 101 suites come with sweeping river views, with Thai textiles and accents littered throughout the low-rise development. Within the property, you’ll find a riverside restaurant featuring input from Argentinian chef Mauro Colagreco, of the two-Michelin-starred Mirazur restaurant in Menton, France.

Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences at Chao Phraya River

Alain Ducasse

Opening by the end of the year, the Four Seasons, return to Bangkok will include a hotel (300 rooms) and residences (350 all-corner units) in a 73-story building. The two projects, along with Capella (see below) are collectively being dubbed the Chao Phraya Estate, and will take up over 350 meters of river frontage and about 35 rai in total.

Hyatt Regency Thailand's fourth Hyatt will arrive in mid-2018 on Sukhumvit Soi 13, where it will enjoy direct sky bridge access to BTS Nana. The 273 rooms and suites will be decked out in a modern Thai style augmented by Hyatt’s usual elegant and sleek design. On-site, you’ll also find high-end shopping venues, two restaurants, a bar, fitness center and a spa.

Waldorf Astoria First slated to open in 2015, Waldorf Astoria is really, truly opening on Jan 30. It’ll be the first incursion of the Hilton’s luxury hotel brand into Southeast Asia. Perched nearby the Royal Bangkok Sports Club and Ratchaprasong Intersection, the hotel features interiors by architect Andre Fu. The 171 rooms and suites—including some of the largest in downtown Bangkok at 300sq meters—each feature floor-to-ceiling windows. There will be six high-end F&B outlets, including a 55th-floor rooftop bar decked out by local firm AvroKo.

Those tired of making the trek to Bangna can now make the equally arduous schlep to Bangyai across the river when the Swedish furniture and home accessories behemoth opens its second branch in March. The 50,000-sq-meter area next to Central Westgate will come with a canteen serving a “branch exclusive” menu, too.

The high-brow arm of Sweden's H&M fashion retailer is expected to land its first Thailand store at EmQuartier in March. Launched in 2007, COS stands for "Collection of Style" and is known for its clean shapes and pared-back stylings. Hopefully, local prices will be comparable to those around Asia. For example, COS Korea sells men's shirts at around B4,500 and women's cardigans from B4,000.

Brick Live The UK-born theme park will bring millions of Lego bricks to the out-of-the-way Show DC mall in mid-2018, joining other themed zones devoted to Star Wars and Ninjago.

Cinema Oasis Set to open in March, this independent cinema on Sukhumvit Soi 43 comes from two of the biggest names in the business, artist Manit Sriwanichpoom (Kathmandu Gallery, The Pink Man photo series) and director Ing Kanjanavanit (Shakespeare Must Die). The six-story building, designed by Somchai Jongsaeng of Deca Atelier, will comprise a 48-seat theater, topped off with a gallery and events space. Waldorf Astoria

Apple Bangkok internet went into overdrive last September when Apple announced it was hiring for its debut Thailand store. While the location is still under wraps, rumors last year suggested a 20,000-sq-meter Bangkok outlet would open "by 2018" at the IconSiam (see right).

Don Quijote The tax-free discount megastore Don Quijote from Japan is set to take over a space at the start of Ekkamai Soi 5 by late 2018. Long on Thai tourists' shopping hitlist, the chain is known for its huge range of electronics, clothing and all sorts of quirky, occasionally lewd Japanese accessories ("boobie towel," anyone?), as well as its pounding in-store soundtrack.

ADVERTORIAL

Catch of the Season: Label Rouge Fine de Claire

The Dock is bringing in some of the world’s best oysters for the start of the new year The Dock Seafood Bar by Thammachart Seafood, one of Bangkok’s most respected seafood providers, is expanding its wonderful Dock-to-Dish collection by rolling out a special “Catch of the Season” through Jan-Feb, and oyster fans are in luck. The restaurant and seafood bar is regularly importing a collection of remarkable Fine de Claire oysters, which come from arguably the world’s most famous oyster-producing region, the Marennes Oleron basin, in France. The Marennes Oléron basin is one of only two natural oyster production areas in France. The oysters mature in shallow ponds called “claires” which give them a less oceanic flavour than those raised in the open sea, thanks to the reduced salt content. The “claires” create ideal natural environments for the oysters that are never exactly identical, as they depend on the degree of exposure and location, but always better than in the open ocean. Of the many types of oysters this region offers, The Dock has selected the Label Rouge Fine de Claire Oyster for this time of year, and a few ways to eat them. You can enjoy them smoked with beechwood, which creates a vibrant aroma of beech to match the oyster’s natural balance, salty-sweet taste. The oysters are only produced from Oct-May each year to respect their natural repro-

duction cycles and prevent them from developing a milky texture. Smoked Label Rouge Green Oyster at The Dock matches a great smoky flavour with the freshness of the oyster. You can also order the freshly shucked Label Rouge Green Oyster Platter, which highlights the superior quality of the Fine De Claire and their freshness and taste. To top this off, select from a range of dressings for your oysters, including the sour and lightly spicy Cocktail sauce, the sweet-and-sour Oriental sauce or the Pesto sauce that offers a sweet and salty taste. The specific oysters imported by The Dock are certified by the coveted Label Rouge (Red Label) award and the EU’s Protected Geographical label for its high-quality standards. It is a production method based on an approved specification that is respectful of animal welfare and protects the environment. As they say, “an oyster’s taste comes from the area it’s harvested,” and with its marine odour, firm texture and balanced taste, the Smoked Label Rouge Green Oysters available at The Dock will satisfy your palate beautifully. Perfect for those who prefer a more refined taste. Prices: B289 (1 pc.), B1,490 (6 pcs.), B2,890 (12 pcs.)

W RETREAT PHANG NGA BAY

Luang Prabang Simon Matzinger

Max Pixel

Situated on Koh Yao Noi, a small island set in the middle of Phang Nga Bay, Thailand’s second W Retreat is a 30 -minute speedboat ride from Phuket. The 79 villas each come with private plunge pools overlooking the sandy white beach and turquoise waters rich with coral. It’s not all lazing in the sun, though—this island is especially known for its diving, snorkeling and rock climbing. Scheduled to open in Jan, 2018. HOLIDAY INN RESORT AND EXPRESS SAMUI BOPHUT

The Bell Tower

Phu Quoc, Vietnam Airline: Bangkok Airways Price: The current promotion for this route is B8,100/ round trip. The airline offers four flights a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday). Why you should visit: Despite the island’s growing popularity among the wintertime migration of European tourists, there remain stretches of powdery, barely-trodden beach worth adding to your list of holiday must-go’s. Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s most beautiful and largest island and recently welcomed its first big luxury hotel, JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort and Spa, which will be followed by Dusit Princess Moonrise Beach Resort, among a slew of other developments. www.bangkokair.com

Xian, China Airline: NokScoot Price: Expect returns tickets at around B10,000, which includes meals and a checked bag. Three roundtrip flights per week on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Why you should visit: Xian is the capital of China’s northwest Shaanxi province. The city’s often referred to as the birthplace of Chinese civilization as it was the reigning seat of 13 imperial dynasties. Phu Quoc Island

Why you should visit: The tranquil city of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site, sits in a valley of lush green mountains where sacred temples and abundant natural beauty jostle for attention. Often described as the “Jewel of Laos,” the city has a definite stuck-in-time feel to it. Wake from 5:30am to partake in the sacred Buddhist almsgiving ceremony on the main street or head 45 minutes out of town to swim in the stunning jade pools of Kuang Si Waterfall.

Kaohsiung, Taiwan Airline: Thai Smile Price: Bangkok-Kaohsiung return is a little over B9,000. Why you should visit: Next to Taipei, Kaohsiung attracts Taiwan’s highest number of visitors thanks to its hall of giant Buddhas in Fo Guang Shan monastery and the cheap seafood street on Cijin Island. This modern metropolis is home to the Dream Mall, considered the largest shopping mall in Taiwan, while the Pier-2 Art Center showcases giant-size art pieces. Come nightfall, lose yourself amid the two biggest night markets in Southeast Asia, Kaisyuan and Jin-Zuan, where you’ll find everything from crispy fried squid to Gaoyuei Shrimp Mooncake. www.thaismileair.com

Cebu, Philippines Airline: Philippine Airlines Price: The three weekly flights operate on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, clocking in at less than 4 hours of flight time for B10,515 round-trip. ESCAPE ROUTES By Kankanok Wichiantanon

HUA HIN

Coastal Blues Avani Hua Hin (www.minorhotels.com/en/avani/hua-hin), formerly Ananda Hua Hin Resort & Spa, occupies a quiet stretch of beach in the coastal town. The 185 rooms/ suites and 11 villas are decorated in subtle earth tones and wood, accented with splashes of green. The hotel as a whole toes the same line between modernist and traditional, contrasting square architecture with Thai textures, like woven bamboo furniture. Rates start at B3,600/night, but are higher for the 11 one-bedroom and two-bedroom villas, which come with a plunge pool or a Jacuzzi and direct access to the lagoon pool. Active vacationers can check out the fully-equipped gym and the array of watersports on offer (sailing, kite surfing, paddle boarding and yoga). The Hammam spa room has a Turkish steam bath, which you can follow up with a massage (B1,500). Come evening, find your way to the resort’s jazz lounge for mellow blues with cocktails and mezze plates.

PHUKET

Round Two Phuket Town’s purveyor of sassy, bold flavors, Suay Restaurant (www.suayrestaurant.com), is celebrating the success of its original venue with a follow up in the Cherng Talay district. The airy restaurant goes for a naturalistic look, with hanging orchids, a wood slab center table and a large outdoor garden space. Food-wise, expect the same table-side hotplate theatrics and internationally-inflected Thai cuisine, like the "Foie Gras Thai Style" (B450) served with sweet-and-tangy tamarind dip on betel leaves with edamame salsa and cashew nuts. The braised beef cheek in the massaman curry with coconut gnocchi (B650) is a study in Thai-Italian fusion. The barbecue terrace offers a private, alfresco experience.

SRIRACHA

Flee the City Sriracha is unlikely to top anyone’s list of Thailand’s most beautiful beach destinations, but it is only two hours’ drive (or three hours’ train ride) from Bangkok. Those looking for a quiet-ish seaside escape should check out Oakwood Hotel & Residence (www.oakwoodasia.com), an easygoing hotel decked out with all the mod cons. Starting at B2,800 per night, studios and one- and two-bedrooms come with the choice of sea, mountain or city views. A large rooftop pool offers a panoramic view of the Gulf—perfect for a sundowner or two.

JAPAN

Mountain High The Fujisan World Heritage Center (www.fujisan-whc.jp/en) has finally opened its doors, dedicated to celebrating the UNESCO World Heritage listed Mt. Fuji. The building’s centerpiece is an upturned latticed cone that imitates the iconic mountain, surrounded by a large pool that reflects its likeness. Climb a spiral walkway to the fifth floor to be greeted with a panoramic view of the real, admittedly far more photogenic, Mt. Fuji. The south hall (entry 420 yen or B120) screens movies about the mountain; while the north hall (free) entrance provides information on climbing, weather conditions and nearby attractions.

After its success with branches in 8 Thonglor and All Seasons Place, Sushi Cyu is now open to the masses at CentralWorld. Unlike the other two branches. the CentralWorld location solely focuses on omakase with highlight ingredients like Honmaguro (bluefin tuna), Uni (sea urchin), Kinmedai (golden eye sea bream) and other seasonally selected fish and seafood from Japan. Sushi Cyu's a la carte offering is also very strong, offering up a Japan's “greatest hits”

Sushi_cyu_BK_04 - DN.indd 17

menu of sorts with classics like teriyaki and tempura. Why it’s exciting: Sushi Cyu CentralWorld clocks in at one of the most affordable omakase experiences in Bangkok (B1,850/10 courses), but still imports much of its produce from Japan to get the job done. If you’ve been itching to try your first omakase dinner, this is as safe a bet as any. 3/F, Atrium Zone. CentralWorld

Viera by Ragazze designer Ploy Saengkhae's super-high waisted panys will give you the illusion of supermodel-long legs. The brand’s many twists on the style (from B7,900), like one with an uber-chic oversized leather buckle and leather fringe, add a playful touch when matched with formal pieces like a blazer.

The vintage-looking illustrations of designer Chanida Voraphitak's Cuscus, from leopards and lobsters to panthers and swans, make for iconic prints on the brand’s range of premium accessories like phone cases and silk scarves. But the most Instagrammable piece is the adorable flamingo-print tote bag with ostrich feather adornment (B2,750).

A former designer at Vickteerut, Teerut Wongwatanasin has created his own line of sportswear that strikes a balance between performance and classiness. The latest swimwear collection in collaboration with actress Ploy Cherman became an overnight Insta-hit. The seductive yet elegant Chermarn swimwear collection starts from B2,890.

Paint This Canvas, Thonglor’s innovative champion of Thai produce, has just launched its first tasting menus, which see chef Riley Sanders prep six (B1,800) or nine courses (B2,200). Start your journey with a small bite of pork crackling and lemon grass cream TK that you’re to scoop up in a pandan leaf, before moving onto a cold soup of grilled young coconut, crabmeat and pickled mango, and the addictive sticky rice cooked in shrimp’s head fat and topped with puff rice and ginger flower. Heftier protein-packed mains come in the form of smoky grilled catfish on coconut charcoal and tamarind sauce; super-tender duck breast with a mildly tangy roselle sauce and roseapple cooked in duck fat; grilled, two-day sous-vide pork neck with pak kee hood (a uniquely spiced, tube-shaped vegetable) and daikon puree; and grilled Buriram beef with a Thai-spice dry rub and sea-blite. Finish off with a refreshing ginger sorbet with butterfly pea. 113/9-10 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 099-614-1158. Open Sun-Thu 6pm-midnight, Fri-Sat 6pm-12:30am

Big-name British chef Martin Blunos, of the formerly-two-Michelin-starred Lettonie and Blinis restaurants (both now closed) and repeated appearances on Iron Chef UK, has moved to Bangkok and opened restaurant here. At Blunos, the walrus-mustached chef promises international comfort food by the pool. The Fisherman (B1,200) is a seafood platter that comes piled high with milkpoached snow fish, grilled prawns, oak-smoked salmon mousse and cured herring. His lobster roll (B490), meanwhile, spotlights bouncy, garlic butter-poached Canadian lobster. Don’t miss our favorite, the juicy braised pork belly in apple juice with pork skin fritter and spiced chickpeas (B500 or B650 with Strongbow cider). 4/F, Eastin Grand Sathorn, South Sathorn Rd., 02-210-8100. Open daily 9-12am. BTS Surasak

The new tea room from dreamy local fashion label Sretsis looks like a fairy tale come true. Step beyond Sretsis Parlour's intricate pink, hand-carved facade, and you're transported from a mall to a world of sweet fantasy: daisy-adorned carpeted floors, a handpainted sky-like fresco and custom wallpaper that Sretsis co-created with British luxury wallpaper maker House of Hackney. The menu spotlights too-beautiful-to-eat snacks, from the Sretsis signature tea set (Swedish sandwich cakes, Blossom Baby cakes and Daisy Princess cakes served with No.57 tea, coffee or Chandon Champagne) to the healthy-alternative Forest Faeries ("raw" cakes served with watermelon granita, No.57 tea or cold-pressed juice). Tea set costs from B550 person. 2/F, Central Embassy, Phloen Chit Rd., 083-989-8380. Open daily 11am-8pm. BTS Phloen Chit

The latest dessert cafe to dip into its Thai roots is Cher Cheeva, tucked away in DD Mall, right opposite the sprawling Chatuchak Market. Amid a veritable jungle of dangling greenery, the cafe serves a line of bite-sized, flavor-packed Thai treats, such as kanom gluay (steamed banana cake, B15/piece) and kanom pra pai (B80), chewy balls of flour in a rainbow of colors thanks to jasmine water, pandan juice and butterfly pea juice, filled with smooth bean curd. Order a range of bites with a pot of hot tea at B250 or sip an icy green tea granita (B120) to cool down after a sweaty JJ mission. 2/F, DD Mall, 631 Kamphaeng Phet Soi 1, 099-246-6954. Open Wed-Fri 12-6pm, Sat-Sun 11am-7pm. MRT Kamphaeng Phet

Chinatown’s latest cocktail bar is all about Thai ingredients. By Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj

NOMA (NOW OUR MOTHER’S ANGRY)

This bar/live music project from a group that includes Kawee Soontornwan of Medium Rare gig organizer (they brought in FKJ, Shura and Alt-J to name a few) takes over the old home of Cosmic Cafe (RIP) on RCA. 21/66 RCA Block C, 080-939-7899. Open Fri-Sun 8pm-2am

The buzz: Teens of Thailand founder Niks Anuman-Rajadhon proves that Chinatown is still where it’s at with a new cocktail bar where all the drinks are about Thai ingredients. The decor: The bar is hidden down a tiny sub-soi inside Soi Nana, opposite Teens of Thailand. The limited, narrow space offers scant seating arrangements, with stools at the bar providing the perfect spot to watch the bartender in action and talk to him about the rare local ingredients used in the drinks. While sitting there, look up and you’ll see a massive shark hanging over your head—a nod to co-owner Gun Leelhasuwan’s childhood obsession with the creatures. Steep, cramped wooden stairs lead up to the second floor where, by March, you will get a chef’s table concept but for tasting cocktail ingredients. The drinks: Niks has been spending a lot of time up north recently, tasting random plants grown on the mountains and bringing back ingredients to use in this bar. Following ToT’s style, the menu here also changes very frequently, depending on what ingredients they’ve found. Kiattikoon “Toon”

Auengkum, formerly at Bunker, is the head bartender here. His Wild Honey Daiquiri (B360) is fresher than your usual daiquiri, made with wild honey from Khao Yai National Park and served icy cold. Martini-drinkers cannot miss the Pickled Elephant Garlic (B360), a mix of vodka, Rhum Agricole, dry vermouth and brine from the pickled garlic—savory and surprising. For something fresh and fun, try the Tiger Ear (B360), made with a blend of two rums, dry vermouth, cucumber bitters, citrus, Howor syrup and “Tiger Ear” leaves, which have a taste somewhere between oregano and mint. People in the north often eat them with buffalo laab. The crowd: Cool Bangkokians who like to hang out in Chinatown instead of Thonglor, plus a lot of ToT’s loyal customers.

IRON BALLS GIN PARLOUR PHROM PHONG

Having made a name in Ekkamai, the gin-loving bar is ready for a second location. Located between Quince and Sing Sing Theater, you might well walk past it a few times without realizing it’s there. Sukhumvit Soi 45 (next to Quince), 063-2251331. Open Tue-Sun 8pm-1am

Why you should care: These guys are trying to educate drinkers with local ingredients that most Thais haven’t even heard of before. It helps that the drinks are also yummy and priced under B400. 35 Soi Maitri Chit, 097-134-4704. Open Wed-Sun 8pm-1am

ROOFTOP New Sundown Specials A year after Sky On 20’s opening, a new cocktail menu has given you reason to return to the low-key Sukhumvit rooftop bar. The new list of drinks costs from B300-400, but arrive for 5-7pm happy hour and it’s 50-percent off daily. Take your pick from something tall, refreshing and spicy like the Red Hot Chili Pepper (lemongrass and chili-infused tequila, Licor 43, lime, vanilla and ginger beer, B350) for a nice, spicy kick to start the night; a classic spirit-forward concoction like

the Queen of Hearts (Mekhong, Malibu, lime, sugar, watermelon, B300); something even stronger like the Hasta La Victoria (dark rum, vanilla, black tea, B300); or a light, prosecco-bubbly cocktail like the Razzleberry (gin, strawberry, vanilla, prosecco, B400). 26/F, Novotel Sukhumvit 20, 19/9 Sukhumvit Soi 20, 02-009-4999. Mediterranean flavors from North Africa, Spain and Southern Italy in a familiar space.

The buzz: Convent Road’s Vesper has split in two. While the bar is now a scaled-back operation on one side, the meat of the space has been devoted to Via Maris, a small-plate restaurant where North African and Eastern Mediterranean spices rule. The decor: An explosion of turquoise, orange and vibrant tiles disguises the old Vesper bare-concrete bones. Thai illustrator Jayoto has contributed a colorful wall mural depicting produce from all along the Mediterranean shoreline. The results are a complete contrast to the moody, lounge-bar vibes next door. The food: The head chef, Sardinian-born Francesco Deiana, remains the same as in the restaurant’s Vesper days. Now though he plays with flavors drawn from North Africa, Spain and Southern Italy. The results are comforting and playful, going for bold flavors

over regional authenticity. Their homemade, and fiery, harissa paste (mostly cumin seeds, garlic and roasted red peppers) gives a powerful punch to the “Mediterranean Mess” (B340), a dish of roasted cumin carrots, green peas, creamy quark cheese and the bitter-sour hint of pickled lemon. Harissa also underpins the eight-hour braised lamb shoulder couscous (B590), which hides in a classic Moroccan tajine. Don’t forget to also try the delicious crab bomboloni (B290), fried dough-like balls stuffed with sumacspiced crab meat. Fans of old Vesper classics like the seafood fregola (tiny ball-shaped pasta, B390) will still find some of their favorites on the menu.

wines by the glass run from B190 Australians to B260 Italians—not bad! Even better—corkage is free. Beers are of the safe, bottled variety (Peroni, B220; Chalawan, B220), while you can also take your pick from Vesper’s massive cocktail menu. Message from the Forest (B390)—a concoction of Bulleit Rye whiskey, beetroot, ginger beer and kaffir lime flanked by a small piece of candied dehydrated ginger on the side—makes an excellent aperitif.

The drinks: Catalonia’s Blancher Cava (B290/glass, B1,450/bottle) is the kind of affordable fizz Bangkok needs more of. Otherwise,

Why we’d come back: There’s some original flavor on display here that you won’t find any place else in Bangkok. Beyond the plate, they still manage to keep hold of the hangout, after-work vibe that did so well for Vesper. Wanvida Jiralertpaiboon

NEW AND NOTED

Soul Food There’s a new restaurant-slash-gallery in Sukhumvit Soi 49 from the chef behind One Ounce Chang Chui. Chef Parkorn “Tan” Kosiyabong has teamed up with some artist friends to open a space that’s all about live electronic music, exhibitions and chef’s table-only, local ingredient-based dinners. Called Ekamian (297/2 Sukhumvit Soi 49, 083-789-9091), it serves set menu dinners starting at B1,500 for six-course dinner, available to only for 12 seats at a time. Expect the likes of frog legs with herbs and garlic foam, or pork ribs with sticky soy honey and crispy garlic.

Cream of the Crop Next time your CentralWorld shopping spree demands a sugar-fueled pick-me-up, drop by the new ice cream stall from Guss Damn Good (3/F, CentralWorld, Ratchadamri Rd., 081-915-8111). The Bangkok-based brand made its name with a micro-home on Saladaeng Soi 1 selling

creamy, Boston-inspired ice cream in natural flavors. Try its much-loved classics like burnt caramel Bonfire, the longan honey Naughty Honey or, our favorite, sea salt and almond brittle Maine Rocky Coast (all at B85 per scoop). Special flavors like Toms (vanilla with blue salt) are also available from time to time.

Peace, Man After leaving its first house in Ekkamai, Peace Oriental Teahouse (G/F, King Power, Soi Rangnam, 097-267-2626) has settled down at King Power on Soi Rangnam to whip up the finest tea in town. Purists can opt for the traditional goodness of ceremonial-grade matcha prepared as koicha (thick tea, B690), hot pot of tea (starts at B200), while the menu also offers new creamy concoctions like the super-intense iced dark chocolate (B160/regular, B220/blended) as well as refreshing iced yuzu (B120). You can also pick up their charcoal-cased hojicha ice cream (B285/scoop)— worth licking the plate. Wanvida Jiralertpaiboon

Krua Banleng HHHH Thai. 163/2 Sathorn Soi 7, 063-184-7928. Open daily 11am-2pm, 5-10pm. BB

Lunchtime anywhere near the center of Chong Nonsi is a mess during weekdays. It’s hot, crowded and loud, but take the time to sneak a little deeper into the back sois and there is refuge to be found. Krua Banleng, the decadeold Phaya Thai restaurant that brought its food to Sathorn in August of 2017, is just such a place. Only a stride or two away from a slate of sweat-soaked outdoor canteens, Krua Banleng wields a bevy of old family recipes and wellsourced ingredients to pull in a small number of more discerning Thai office-goers looking to escape the lunch hordes inside its cozy ’70s-era house during the weekly grind. This isn’t a 50 -baht-lunch-spot by any means, but cut into a chunk of fluffy and rich khai jeow kratiem dong (Thaistyle omelet with pickled garlic, B130) and the modestly higher prices seem very reasonable. It doesn’t take more than a few bites to realize the food here is made with care. You can see

A Bangkok extension of a restaurant empire with over 200 branches in Kyushu, this noodle house has been a staple of the Bangkok soba scene since its opening in 2016. The soba prowess on display here is masked by a humble shop-house exterior, indistinguishable from many a Bangkok izakaya or ramen joint. For the uninitiated, look for the simple declarative sign: “Soba Noodle.” Inside is a clean, well-lit place. The service is zippy and attentive and there’s a general impression of abundance: your cup of free green tea refills itself endlessly, and the soba portions can be increased threefold without extra cost . If clientele is a measure of authenticity, then you’ll appreciate that the restaurant’s regularly packed with Japanese eaters talking loudly over a background of clinking beers. The wallet-friendly menu spans 20 hot and cold options, each differenti-

ated by its side dishes. While the hot broth is fishy and delicious, we recommend the cold option because the noodle keeps its satisfyingly chewy bite. B300 gets you three portions of soba (a mountain you can add to later, if you’re able) and fluffy, crispy shrimp and vegetable tempura, all accompanied by a delicious, clear dipping sauce. For B320, you’ll also get a rice bowl topped with chopped tuna. Plain soba is B190. To go with your draft Asahi (a small for B100), there’s an izakaya-style menu dotted with three price points: B90, B140 and B190. For B190, try the four pieces of shrimp tempura or the grilled mackerel pike with spicy cod roe. The pickled ginger tempura (B140) has a tangy, punchy flavor and only a slightly greasy aftertaste. If you’re eating with a group, add to your table’s bounty the pleasantly smoky grilled capelin (B90 for three), the springy deep-fried octopus (B140) and the cold bean curd with fermented soybean (B140). We later discovered that Azuma is also the favorite soba place of many local chefs, including chef Weerawat “Nhoom” Triyasenawat from Udon Thani’s Samuay and Sons, and for good reason: versus quality for price, this restaurant trumps its local competitors.

this in traditional recipes like the spicy pad Thai goong sod (stir-fried rice noodles with shrimp, B280) or the velvety smooth sauce in the khao tang na tang Krua Banleng (rice crackers with minced pork, shrimp and peanut dip, B120). Dishes like the moo phed soot khun ya (sauteed pork with chili sauce, B160) have clear and defined flavors—a satisfying wallop of peppercorns and diced chilies, creamy sauce and tender strips of pork. It all feels simple, straightforward and well-done. The homespun approach isn’t a surprise. Krua Banleng is owned by the family of classical music legend Luang Pradit Phairoh. His great grandson, Asdavuth “Aey” Sagarik , oversees operations here, while the kitchen is helmed by Matsakorn Chartviratphuri, daughter of the chef at the original location. To her credit, complaints are few and far between. The moo tod jim nam prik ta daeng (deep-fried pork cutlet with red chili dip, B150) has some gooey bites of fat we don’t like, and the goong lai sue pad horapa (sauteed grilled prawns with fresh Thai basil and chili sauce, B350) comes with an absurd heap of fried basil leaves. But it’s not enough to spoil either dish. Cozy, unpretentious Thai restaurants aren’t common in this neck of the woods, especially ones so charming, but Krua Banleng definitely feels like a hidden gem among downtown’s lunchtime blitz.

now TUE Dust to Dust

FRI Mad Fer It

Splitting his time between Amsterdam and Bangkok, contemporary artist Ruangsak Anuwatwimon has long forged a name for his conceptual works linking art, science and nature. His latest exhibition, Right to Clean Air, opens at BACC this Jan 16 with the backing of Greenpeace Southeast Asia. The collection of photos and sculptures made from dust aim to raise awareness of the harmful effects of air pollution.

Nineties kids will know him as the loudmouthed frontman of Brit-rockers Oasis, though these days he’s more of a living, breathing meme, known just as much for spouting off in Youtube clips about cups of tea and his Twitter rants at brother Noel as he is for his music. This Jan 12, Liam Gallagher swaggers on to the stage at Bitec Bangna to perform tracks from his debut album, As You Were, as well as—fingers crossed—a few singalongs from the Oasis back-catalog. See page 25.

TUE Hold the Fort For 25 years the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and an Old Town community have been at loggerheads over the future of Fort Mahakan, a historic site which dates back to the 1800s. In recent months, the BMA has finally made headway in its attempts to evict the local households in order to make way for a new public park and it’s this struggle that’s at the heart of Last Stand for Pom Mahakan, Italian artist Jan Daga’s photo series showing at BACC this Jan 16-22.

SAT Pull up to the Bumper For possibly the most fun you can have in a parking lot, head down to A-Square mall this Jan 13 for the inaugural Bangkok Block Party. Across four stages and 12 hours, more than 50 artists will ply their trade, with highlights including Chicago indie act Autograf and ASAP mob spin-off The Cozy Boys. Also expect to see all the usual party crowd from Blaq Lyte braving the midday sun for once. See page 27.

INSECT IN THE BACKYARD

Director: Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit

Director: Tanwarin Sukkhapisit

The film is separated in two main parts. One tells six short stories while the other shows anonymous interviews and recorded voices. It all works together to follow the lives of people who expect they have one day left to live, without ever hinting to the audience when or how their lives will end. THE PHANTOM OF ILLUMINATION

Director: Wattanapume Laisuwanchai This sensational Thai documentary explores the life of an unemployed film-screener, Sumrith ‘Rith’ Praprakone, after the theater where he worked closes down. Sumrith spent over 30 years working at the theater, and the film impresses with its spectacular blend of two realities: the perspective of Rith himself; and the director’s point of view of Rith’s situation. BAD GENIUS

Bad Genius

After winning its seven-year battle for screening permission with the Ministry of Culture, director Tanwarin Sukkhapisit’s 2010 critical success finally made it to House RCA in 2017. The story examines the life of 35-yearold transgender Tanya and her two teenage siblings, Johnny and Jennifer. As conflicts arise in their lives, the protagonists reveal a strong message about domestic disturbance, prostitution and social convention. A GAS STATION: DIRECTOR'S CUT

Director: Tanwarin Sukkhapisit Set in a remote area of Thailand where everyone dresses as a cowboy, the story focuses on the disappearance of gas station owner Mhan’s newlywed wife. As he waits for her return, two more women try desperately to pursue him. This love triangle revolves in an offbeat and surreal cycle as the movie plays on notions of sadness.

Director: Nattawut Poonpiriya

#BKKY

This drama tells the story of a smart student, Lyn, who decides to make money by helping other students cheat on their STIC exam taking place in Sydney. The result is an exploration of the double standards in education between the rich and poor, shattering the illusion of honesty and equality in the education system.

Director: Nontawat Numbenchapol The director reveals the true stories of 100 teenagers in the midst of gender identity discovery in ways that blur the line between fiction and documentary. Nontawat’s highly involved approach sees scenes narrated by the director himself, while others feature voiceovers from people who themselves have gone through the experiences being fictionalized on screen.
