That Mad Face split opinion Did you enjoy last weekend’s extravaganza of burgers and Chang that was Mad Face? You will have seen us over at the Lenzi booth, truffle sauce down our shirt and halfway through our third porchetta focaccia of the afternoon. But not everyone was as taken with the offerings as we were. In fact, Mad Face threw up a sharp divide in our friendship circle: the ones who think that all a good time needs is roast pork, plenty of it, and the ones who reckon there’s more to life than eating B300 burgers at disused warehouses. Whatever. We’ll see you at the next one. That Bangkok’s newest indie cinema opens this month We, like you, know that watching arthouse flicks at home is just impossible. Watch; pause; check phone; get lost in Facebook thread about who makes Bangkok’s best macarons; unpause; check thread again; forget to pause; lose track of plot; open Youtube and watch cat videos instead. All this is why we need indie cinemas like the new Cinema Oasis, opening this Sat (Mar 17), and powered by the masterminds behind Kathmandu Gallery and the banned movie Shakespeare Must Die. Check movie screening times at www.fb.com/cinemaoasis.bk. That concerts big and small are on the way British pop crooner Sam Smith’s Oct 28 date at Impact Arena understandably steals the headlines, but discerning indieheads will be more excited about the impending visit of the Avalanches. The Australian electro outfit behind one of the ‘00s most influential albums—the sprawling, sampleheavy Since I Left You —are coming to play a rooftop “beach” party at Siwilai City Club, no less. Mar 31: save the date. Ticket details for both shows will be announced shortly. That the gig news could be getting even better So the admins for The Killers’ Thailand fan page on Facebook think. They posted that one of the country’s big concert promoters got in touch and encouraged them to canvas local fans on what would make an affordable ticket price for a Bangkok show. Naturally, the internet exploded. Will the synth-rockers put long-suffering fans out of their misery? Who knows, but the fact that the band has a spare 10 days to kill after its Australian tour in May has us channeling our Mr. Brightside.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID
INTERVIEW The Freedom Story project (originally named Sold) was founded in 2008 by Tawee Donchai, 40 and Rachel Spark, 37, to mitigate child sex trafficking in the villages of the north of Thailand by funding scholarships and educational programs. The organization has already seen 200 graduates, with another hundred in schools right now. Here, we talk to Tawee about his work and hear the stories of two children who received scholarships. How did you get involved with child sex trafficking? I am from a village that suffers from the problem of child trafficking. My parents died when I was young and I grew up with my grandad and his younger sister. I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship when I was 10 through the Ruamchit Normklao Organization (www.ruamchit-normklao.org). Before I met Rachel, I was trying to get a girl a scholarship through the same organization. I didn’t understand the concept of human trafficking until Rachel explained it to me. I then realized that it was something I had been around my entire life. How did The Freedom Story project get started? I had just finished my master’s degree (in biochemistry) when I met Rachel. She was interested in making a documentary about human trafficking and the child sex industry. I decided to help her. I introduced her to some children and was her translator. The documentary focuses on the contrast between the life of a girl at risk of being lured into human trafficking and the lives of the girls who were already caught up in it. The documentary, called Sold, screened in the US, including at a non-profit film festival that Ra-
chel’s father organizes. It received a lot of good feedback and interest, with people reaching out to ask how they could get involved. With their support, we were able to give out 20 scholarships, including to the girl from the documentary. In 2008, we decided to set up a foundation, which was originally called Sold but is now The Freedom Story. What effect has your work had? We started by giving students scholarships. The scholarships are for children who are from highrisk, meaning poor, backgrounds. Then we realized that some of the village schools were not providing good education. Students still couldn’t read or write at the age of 15. So we started a resource center and organized after-school and weekend programs across five amper [sub-districts] to teach children about human trafficking, their rights as human beings, drugs, sex and even family life. The children need role models. They need to be supported to dream bigger. We also meet with families to foster communication and support the careers of parents. Among our 200 graduates are three recipients currently studying in China. One recipient is about to complete her master’s degree.
Is Thailand’s child trafficking situation getting better or worse? Both, really. People are talking about it more and trying to get involved, which is good. Organizations are also getting bigger budgets. However, the traffickers are finding new ways to get to the children. Social media can be dangerous. It’s not just poor and uneducated children that are lured in anymore. Please share with us th stories of some of your scholarship recipients. Ratana, who is now 19, began attending The Freedom Story activities from when she was nine. She is from a poor family and her parents are uneducated, making her susceptible to human trafficking. She applied for a scholarship through the organization and is now studying at Chiang Mai University. We also work with boys like Win, was born in a border area with no formal citizenship. His parents originally encouraged him to stick to farming. The Freedom Story worked with him and he’s now a lawyer with Thai citizenship, and gives his time back to the organization. Mainstream Queens From underground scene to TV prime time, Bangkok drag artists are coming out on top. By Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj
T
hree years ago, Bangkok’s drag queens had only a few bars in Silom to practice their art. Now, they are the focus of a prime-time, US-imported reality TV show, Drag Race Thailand. Here, the city’s fiercest drag queens tell us what the art really means, how they became who they are today, and why drag is so much more than cross dressing.
I FELT BOXED IN, TRAPPED AND BORED SO I BECAME BECOME MORE EXTREME WITH MY MAKEUP AND APPEARANCE
ON TOP OF BEING A PERFORMER EVERY NIGHT, I WORK FULL-TIME AS A PUBLIC SERVANT
Dearis Doll Annee Maywong
Annee Maywong performs on the White Orchid Cruise daily from 8-10pm, at DJ Station on Silom Soi 2 from 11pm Mondays through Saturdays, and at Maggie Choo’s Sundays Gay Night. When I was 16, I joined a dance community where the other men were bigger and taller than me. The choreographer told me that I wasn’t suited to be a male dancer and asked me if I wanted to dress up as a female dancer. That was the start of it all. I also realized I was gay when I was young. I never actually came out to my parents but, of course, they knew. I was also really into ballroom dancing, but my dad, an Air Force pilot, didn’t accept that. He didn’t want his son to have a career in dancing. Only after I entered and won big ballroom dancing competitions and made a name for myself did my family see that I could still bring a good reputation to our family. They stopped caring about my sexuality. Thailand’s acceptance of LGBT identities is still in an early stage. Society may seem open from the outside, but I think people are still prejudiced. Through hard work, the LGBT community is able to prove itself. In general, people also don’t fully understand drag performances. They still think it’s a cabaret. It’s actually performance art. It’s entertainment. The only limitation is the gender we take on. Any type of show that women are afraid to perform, drag queens will perform. We keep it beautiful, of course. On top of being a performer every night, I work full-time as a public servant. I work so much that I’ve passed out during a performance, probably from inhaling the smoke and dry ice on the stage. Next thing I knew, I was waking up in the hospital.

Events
Besides being a full-time drag singer, Dearis Doll also helps out at the family's business—a shrimp farm. You can catch her performing at Maggie Choo's every Sunday night. I realized that I was gay when I was small. I played with the girls instead of the boys, but I liked the boys. When I officially came out to my father, he acknowledged the information, but wasn’t as accepting as he is now. I had to prove myself to him through my work and by being able to look after myself. Five to six years ago, I started as a cross-dressing singer. But I felt boxed in, trapped and bored so I became more extreme with my makeup and appearance, even researching into cross dressing. I had so much fun with it. People then told me that what I am is called a “drag queen.” I think our country is more accepting of the LGBT community now than it used to be. People now judge us based on our talent, not just on our appearance. But the majority of Thais still don’t know what drag is. This is why the TV show Drag Race is valuable. It promotes drag culture in Thailand, and people are learning that this thing exists in our society. Drag is another type of art. It’s a mix of performance and creation, which is the makeup and costume part. The product depends on a person’s style. It takes so much work and effort to become a drag queen. You need discipline and you need to love doing it. Once, during a performance, a very drunk patron came up to me. I thought he was going to shake my hand but he pulled me right off the stage. Still, that was a minor injury.
Maggie Choo’s Gay Night Every Sunday at 7pm. Entry between 7-9pm is B500 and includes two hours of free flow alcohol. After 9pm, entry is B300 and comes with one drink.

Catch her on Sunday nights at Maggie Choo’s Gay Night.
Jaja
I realized I was gay when I was seven. In my classroom in the Philippines, two students would share a single long chair, and I remember I tried to put my leg over my classmate’s leg. I didn’t come out to my family though. Back then the Philippines was quite conservative. I’m 34, so that was a long time ago. You would hear about [gay] people getting bashed or killed. They would kill people just because they were gay. These days, [society] is more accepting. It’s not a problem anymore. I came to Bangkok in September of 2015. I remember the first time I rode the BTS in full drag and in full daylight. People looked at me, but not like they would in the Philippines. It was definitely more open. I was looking for a teaching job when I first arrived, but no schools would hire me. My friend Robert Vasquez introduced me to Sean Peter and Chakgai M. Jermkwan, the owners of The Stranger Bar on Silom Soi 4. Robert told them that I had been a performer back in the Philippines and I performed for them then and there. Once, Daniel Bombardi, the retail director of Gucci, saw me perform at The Stranger Bar and flew me to Singapore to perform on his birthday night. The worst thing that has ever happened to me on stage was when I jumped down from the stage, which was like two meters high, and my balls came out. I was a newbie and was wearing only one pair of stockings because I didn’t know how to tuck [my penis] properly [laughs]. Drag is larger than life. If [other] people wear 10cm false lashes, we wear 100m-long ones. You know, always bigger. Drag means to dress as girl, but larger than the eyes can meet.

Sanya Souvanna Phouma, the former GM at Maggie Choo’s, wanted to do a gay night and he came up with cabaret shows with games and shot giveaways. Back then it was Sanya, Pan Pan [Pangina Heals] and Pakin “Joey” Chaisangkam. Joey quit about two months after the project started, so Sanya asked me to come help and I knew straight away that the concept would work, but it would be tough.
"the only person in Thailand who organizes drag parties." The PR guru's weekly event at Maggie Choo's is possibly Bangkok's most successful gay night.

I TORE MY THIGH LIGAMENT ONCE. I COULD LITERALLY HEAR IT SNAP
Pangina If you’re a part of Bangkok’s gay community, you know Pangina Heals. Her job? She’s “a fucking drag queen, ka.” She is the host at both Maggie Heals Choo's Sunday Gay night and G-Spot Theme Party first Saturday of every month at Vertigo TOO, and co-hosts Line TV’s Drag Race. I was 15 when I realized that I was gay. Growing up I faced a lot of bullying because I was feminine and fat. Kids don’t know the danger of bullying. Some kids want to commit suicide because of it. All of that made me strong. When I came out to my parents, at 18, they said, “Just don’t change back and forth, it's confusing.” They were very, very accepting. In 2011, 98 FM Pynk Radio had a Lady Gaga competition. Dress up like her and win a trip to New York, all expenses paid. I entered and I won. I went there and dressed up. It was like every day was Halloween. It was fun and I never looked back. I think Thai society is one of the best societies in the world in terms of LGBT acceptance. People can go outside, go anywhere. With that being said, the marriage equality laws are still not as open as our social attitude. Drag is an art. Most people confuse the terms “drag” and “drag queens.” Drag is something that anyone can do, regardless of what gender you are. It’s a creative act. But the term drag queen usually means gay men—or straight men—dressing up as women. There is also the term drag king, when women dress up as men. All drag queens are diamonds, all of them beautiful and different in their own unique way. The drag scene in Thailand is growing so much because of the individuals like Jhai Sira (bit.ly/2oEAuCC). These people raise awareness about drag queens. They make people see that it’s nothing about gender—it’s about entertainment and creating expression or art. The worst thing that ever happened to me on stage was when my wig fell off half way through a performance. Oh, no, actually, I tore my thigh ligament once. I could literally hear it snap. It was during a performance for the "Die Another Day" song by Madonna—what a coincidence.
How did you meet Pan Pan? I met Pan Pan a long time ago at Bed Supper Club. He was a dancer there. I never knew that he wanted to be a drag queen. I remember I called Pan Pan and was like, “Are you crazy? There are no jobs!” He told me he loved doing the makeup, entertaining people. He believed that if he entertained people, it was like he healed them after a long day. Who is your audience? Anyone who wants to come. We have had four [straight] couples who met at our parties get married.
What makes your gay parties so special? We work very hard and my standards are very high. All my show girls must meet these three conditions: one, their lip-syncing needs to be on point; two, they cannot sing the same song within three months; and three, they cannot wear the same costume again, ever. In our second year, we launched our monthly theme night to encourage people to dress up. The gay community gets easily bored so you have to keep them entertained to keep them coming back.
What’s the worst thing that has ever happened during a show? Two years ago we had this gay couple at our show and one of them got offended by a joke. They left and came back with five people with guns. The next day I had to go to the police station and file a report. How do you feel about the LGBT situation in Bangkok? LGBT people are usually very grateful to be in Thailand. Thailand is one of the most open countries in the world [LGBT wise]. We are blessed and very lucky to be gay in Thailand.

PETCHABURI
Come Away Getting good seafood in Hua Hin isn't as easy as it once was. We recommend driving further along the coast to restaurants like Coral Vine Bar & Restaurant (www.fb.com/coralvinehuahin), just north of the main town and staking out its own stretch of tranquil waterfront. The restaurant, which belongs to the Coral Tree Villa resort, serves up the day’s catch in dishes like pasta with smoked chili cream and sweet crab meat (B350) or sunflower sprout somtam that’s topped with fresh prawns (B230). The place has a lofty industrial look, but the decor pales beside the natural beauty on display. Come for a refreshing, sundown gin and tonic (B280), here made with a Thai twist using chili and cilantro.
THE MALDIVES
It Takes Two With the new Ras Fushi Resort & Spa (www.centarahotelsresorts. com), Centara has perfected the romantic seaside holiday: standalone villas (both over the water and not), outdoor bathtubs, a sunset bar, those en-vogue mesh beds and (sorry, kids) a strictly adultsonly policy. All this on a golden island surrounded by the iconic turquoise waters of the Maldives. Ocean Front Beach Villas start at B18,549/night while the overwater villas go for B24,208/ night. The hotel also organizes snorkeling and diving trips to the area’s favorites of the Giraavaru Cave, Kuda Haaa and Shark Point. To max-out on holiday pampering, get the Gold All-Inclusive package (an additional 4,648/night/person) that includes three buffet meals per day, an 11-to-11 open bar, three dives per week and spa treatments.
HUA HIN
Subtly Sutton With the just-opened Vana Nava Sky Bar on the 27th floor of Holiday Inn Hua Hin, Asia’s hotshot bar designer Ashley Sutton proves he can do subtle, too. Sutton here eschews his extravagant steampunkery for classic marble and lots of glass, including in the deck that overlooks a water park. There’s still some Jules Verne to the design, though, with brassy seashell lattices and seating upholstered in gray and copper colors. Behind the creative cocktail menu is renowned “mixsultant” and frequent Sutton-collaborator Joseph Boroski. Need something to go with all the eye candy? The tapasstyle menu boasts bar grub with a Thai/Japanese/Mediterranean palate.
APP
Push Off Tabs, toil and too many print-outs —holiday planning shouldn’t have to be this way. Bangkok Airways (www.bangkokair.com) has joined a slew of other carriers that want to streamline your travel planning by introducing its own app. You’ll find all the necessary functions: bookings, seat selection, check-in, meals, insurance and flight status. Our favorite is the promotions tab, so now you can wistfully browse vacation deals on your commute to work. They make it easy to sync up the rest of your holiday, too, with hotel reservations, rentals and transportation all at the push of a button. The app is free and available for Android and Apple devices. For more information, visit www.bangkokair.com.

Made in Korea K-pop, K-dramas and Korean cosmetics, perhaps we should have seen this one coming: Korean beauty. The latest import from the land of East Asian tastemakers is Wonjin, one of Seoul’s top beauty brands whose clinics have the appearance of modern art galleries. The coveted Korean look is here administered by Thai surgeons and dermatologists, with services running head to toe. Typical touch-ups like hair removal and anti-aging lasers start from B15,000, but the more enduring edits, like facial contour surgery and calf reductions, start at around B200,000. 10/F, Gaysorn Tower, Ratchadamri Rd. 02-023-7049. Local leathersmiths Viera by Regazze have, since 1984, been crafting artisan accessories that would do their Italian progenitors proud. The newly launched handbag line, however, will have you foregoing the fusty B50,000 originals in Siam Paragon for something more fun. The sheepskin Summer Tie bags and Waistbags are boho-chic exemplified. The most head-whipping item of the collection, though, is the Star Fruit bag (B11,990), the best oddly shaped handbag we’ve seen since Gabriela Hearst’s runaway hit, the Nina bag. March, when the weather warms and we begin a collective countdown to the Songkran holidays. Homegrown swim shorts brand Salawan is way ahead of us, having just launched a collaboration with another Thai designer, Issue. Swim shorts come in black, red and yellow, or, if you’re especially indecisive, some combination of those colors. Prices start at B2,390. BK says: The existence of this store, which offers Euro brands that can’t be found anywhere else in Bangkok, signals that the city’s menswear scene is finally coming up to par with womenswear. Price range: Over B5,000 except sales stuff
Style: Imported cult brands like Saturdays Surf NYC, Beton x Cire and Stanley & Sons. Check out the room dedicated to vintage clothing. BK says: Onion launched its own line, Clothier Ekkamai, last year. It remains true to its vintage style with the odd preppy touch on a clean-cut, button-down shirt sourced from Japanese garment master Shuttle Notes. Price range: T-shirts from B990 to overcoats from B22,000.
Style: A Japanese shirtmaker whose reputation stretches to New York’s Madison Avenue. Specializing in a relaxed, Ivy League kind of style, these guys make their shirts out of 100-percent cotton and linen. BK says: Go for the deceptively simple but well-structured dress shirts that you’d never see for under B4,000 at Paragon. Price range: Everything between B2,950-B3,250

Hot Plate Upmarket teppanyaki steakhouse and master of good Tripadvisor reviews, Nami at the JW Marriott, has rolled out a new menu that’s not just about meat but also veg. Head chef Yukio Takeda starts his dinners with Vietnamese-like wraps seared teppan-style and stuffed with corn and prawn (B380) before moving onto the good stuff: A5 wagyu rolls (B1,800) paired with full-flavored shallots, mushrooms and a thick wagyu sauce. To leave reeling from a food coma, order the fried rice with diced wagyu (B420)—a hefty portion that plays on all the best flavors of a Japanese-style curry. For dessert, the pan-fried homemade green tea mochi stuffed with red bean appears simple but tastes the opposite. LG/F, JW Marriot Bangkok, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-656-7700. Open daily 11am-10:30pm

72 Courtyard’s Spanish tapas restaurant, Toro, is starting a new event series to find out which Bangkok chef makes the best paella. Paella on the Patio Chef Battle kicks off on Mar 17 between Chalee Kader of Surface and Randy Nopprapa of Fillets. Both chefs also co-own Charoenkrung’s new-school Isaan joint, 100 Mahaseth. Chef Chalee promises a “Thai-style” paella that combines seafood with Thai chili paste, while chef Randy will use his Japanese cuisine skills on ingredients like hotaru-ika (firefly squid) and chicken meatballs. The B1,000 price includes three glasses of wine by Wine Garage, in addition to portions of both chef’s paellas. 72 Courtyard, 72 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 02-392-7790. Open daily 6pm-midnight; Sat-Sun noon-3pm
You used to go to Da Vinci Ristorante restaurant at the Rembrandt hotel for one of the best sub-B2,000 Sunday brunches out there. Now there’s another reason: an extended alfresco space that takes in the breeze from its fourth-story poolside perch. The changes make sure that the homey, Italian trattoria vibe stays the same, though now there’s a more modern edge. Head there for the pizzas (starting from B230 for Margarita), which the chefs slide from a giant, copper-plated, wood-fired pizza oven, as well as the fresh ravioli filled with ricotta and parmesan cheese. The Sunday brunch (B1,250) still offers foie gras, cold-cuts, cheeses, barbecue and pizza, as well as unlimited wine. 4/F, Rembrandt Hotel, 19 Sukhumvit Soi 18, 02-261-7100. Open daily noon-11pm. BTS Asok
With the arrival of ramen stall Uma Uma, The Commons has seemingly completed the comfort-food set. The 60-year-old Fukuoka name with branches in Asoke and Silom is known for its Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen (B220): thin noodles in a rich pork-bone broth with a perfectly runny egg. Arguably even more exciting are the deliciously plump gyoza (B130/10 pieces) or kushiyaki (grilled skewers). Our top pick’s the torikawa (B55 each), sticks of wonderfully crisp grilled chicken skin that make the perfect drinking snack. The Commons, Thonglor Soi 17, 086971-5505. Open daily 11:30am-midnight

ON THE BAR NOMA The buzz: With NOMA, which stands for “Now Our Mother’s Angry,” Kawee “May” Soontornwan (of gig promoters Medium Rare) and his friends have taken the space once Cosmic Cafe and turned it again into a stomping ground of music industry insiders that feels like a friend’s house party. The decor: Just as grungy as its predecessor, NOMA is “house party” to a T, from mismatched glassware and wall scrawl to mid-century sofas and neon light-
ing, all of it capped off with a David Bowie poster. The music: A mingle-ready indie soundtrack that includes Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life” and other Trainspotting alt-hits, plus occasional live acts. The drinks: They might come in coffee cups or wine glasses, but count on them being boozy childhood throwbacks like the Psycho Tropical Yoghurt (gin, yogurt, egg whites and pineapple, B160), the Jam on a Toast (vodka, orange and
blackberry jam and gummy bears, B160) and (entering adolescence here) the Dirty Stache (whiskey, smoked coconut milk, Nutella and pineapple juice, B180). Why you should care: It’s the heart of the indie music scene— both industry and fandom—so come for the people and the quality live music. Link Cuisine
A new Yen Akat cocktail and fusion food spot. The buzz: After two years serving Asia-Italian fusion to expats and tourists on Samui, Link Cuisine has taken its recipe to Bangkok's leafy Soi Yen Akat. The decor: The restaurant’s moving the sleepy neighborhood upscale with some polished industrial chic that could run with Thonglor’s fanciest. The vibe is somewhere between warehouse, greenhouse and your friend’s backyard. They’ve divided the attention between indoors and out, the alfresco atmosphere relying on the surrounding mature trees to give that secret-garden feel. Inside, there’s a brassy gleam off the hardwood floors and fixtures, with lounge and dining area taking separate rooms.
14
The food: "Fusion" has a broad range here, the menu sporting cuisine classics like burgers and pad Thai alongside more ambitious and ethnically mixed-up dishes, like the tuna tartare (B495) that uses teriyaki sauce, pomegranate seeds and shredded mangoes. Our favorite in the Italian corner is the mascarpone-stuffed ravioli bathed in a truffle sauce (B650). There are also pizzas galore and a globetrotting array of appetizers. The tiramisu (B295) is perfectly bitter-sweet thanks to its generous coat of cocoa powder. The drinks: There’s currently a Sunday brunch deal that nets you food and two cocktails for B995/person. Link’s signature cocktails are punchy and brunch-ready, coming in three colors:
a crisp and refreshing Green (cucumber, apple, lemon, Bombay Gin, B250), the tropical Yellow (pineapple, mint, Bacardi, B250) and White (coconut milk, Baileys, vodka B250), which is rich and creamy. To go with the heavier dinner fare, there’s a satisfying wine list as well as the requisite, big-name beers. Why we’d come back: Live music, koi ponds, lush canopy and a menu with more variety than you can handle in a single visit. Kankanok Wichiantanon 19 Yen Akat Rd., 02-077-4804. Open daily 11am-11pm

NEW AND NOTED
Venice of the East Changing up the status quo at Anantara Siam’s Italian fine-dining den, Biscotti, is new head chef Andrea Buson. Originally from Venice, Busan is stepping outside your usual Tuscan and Roman favorites. His Venetian-style green pea risotto (B810) bursts with salty strips of pancetta and fresh pea flavor—though the slab of foie gras on top is pure five-star Bangkok hotel. A slow-cooked octopus tendril (B720) showcases Venetian cuisine’s seafood roots, plated with chickpea puree and sweet, zesty lemon. What hasn’t changed is Biscotti’s after-dark vibe of rich, lacquered woods and equally rich-looking clientele, most of whom finish on the a la minute, deconstructed tiramisu (B680).
Blend In Chiang Mai-hailing coffee roaster Pacamara has popped up in Siam Square (A La Art, Chulalongkorn Soi 64). With its cool navy and gray tones, and intimate booths, the cafe

ought to spell the end of reluctant visits to Starbucks or Tom N Toms. On the menu, you’ll find both classic espresso-based drinks (from B95) and slow-bar coffee (B120), made using rotating sourced beans from El Salvador to Ethiopia, with a full brunch menu to come. Grab a house blend to take home—a bargain at B200 for 250g.
South by Northwest You’ll have to travel a little further for a steaming bowl of laksa (B179) or a fragrant nasi lemak (B129), with news that one of the city’s most authentic Malay-Singaporean restaurants, Sambalacha, has swapped Chula for Bangna (Bangna Trad Soi 56, to be precise). Expect the same warm, welcoming service at the new townhouse location, but good news if the trek’s too daunting: they still do delivery (hit up 063-929-5615, www.fb.com/unclepangnasilemakbkk). The Meatchop Butcher and Spirits HHH Steak. 1/4 Sala Daeng Soi 1, 02-033-2709. Open Mon-Sat 11am-11pm. BBB F
Thanks to a cluster of ritzy condominiums that line Silom’s Sala Daeng Soi 1, the area became a hot ticket for new restaurants in 2017—some of them good, and some really not . The Meatchop Butcher and Spirits is on the better side of that spectrum. In fact, you could say it has brought a welcome dose of cool to the neighborhood. Outside, the sounds of punchy ’70s disco hits bellow from speakers just above the restaurant’s sleek black facade. Inside, an open kitchen promises a lively atmosphere, augmented by black tiling, pastel pink walls and rattan chairs for a stylized take on a bustling neighborhood deli. It’s an atmosphere that seems to have struck a chord with the more well-heeled Thais and expats that live nearby. Combine the atmosphere with The Meatchop’s selection of signature cocktails (from B340) and frosty craft beers (from B220) and the restaurant works great as a pre-drinking den or a quiet date spot. The food holds up its end of the bargain, too. The

Liaoning a miss altogether. For the rest of us, that beef dish delivers a soup so laden with slices of succulent meat that it seemingly feels never ending, all dressed in a greasy but oh-so-good stock that grows with a slow burn. The mapo tofu here is another fiery addition to your dinner, though prepare yourself for a game of chase-the-tofu as you try and pluck the slippery, not-quite-as-solid-asthey-should-be lumps of protein from their tangy, minced-pork-laden sauce. We’d also advise on a plate of the pan-fried beef dumplings. Firstly because they’re only B80 and seven to a plate, but also because dumplings with a perfectly crisp, pan-fried crust just taste better. Laoning has been a Silom fixture for longer than we can remember. Over the years, some things have changed (gone are the dodgy, straight-from-the-1970s framed photos of the Taj Mahal and disinterested, nose-picking waitresses) while others haven’t. The big bottles of Tsingtao (B150) are still not cool enough and the kitchen continues to look like a hygiene warzone (seriously, finicky eaters best not peer through the service hatch). But none of that really matters since most times you decide to come here you’ll be too drunk to realize.

With its 4:30am closing time, Liaoning restaurant is no secret among Silom’s party crowd. Weary heads from Whiteline jostle for tables with Chinese mainlanders when the hour’s late, though you’ll find Liaoning’s no-frills diner in hot demand pretty much any time of the night. Weirdly, for somewhere that bills itself as a dumpling restaurant, it’s not the dumplings that steal the show here (well-stuffed as they are). Rather, it’s the freakishly delicious fried green beans with Chinese pepper (B140), which taste meatier, saltier and juicier than any genuinely vegetarian dish has a right to do so. If you mind oily food, then steer clear of other Liaoning staples like the “poached sliced beef in hot chili oil” (B280). Actually, if you mind oily food then best give
Meatchop’s claim to fame is obviously its wide selection of premium meats, which includes typical Australian staples, like Black Angus ribeye (B1,250/300g), tenderloin (B650/250g) and Wagyu striploin (B900/300g), alongside locally sourced meats like Chiang Rai chicken (B400/half). The chef brigade knows how to prepare those plates right. On our last visit, the dry-aged pork chop (B400/270g.) with garden vegetables and celery puree was tender, well-seasoned and bursting with flavor—an impressive feat for a thick slice of grilled pork. The selection of smaller plates does just as well. Starters like the tender grilled octopus (B230) with creamy avocado mash or the Spanish-style meatballs (B160) smothered in tomato sauce and cheese are satisfying, tasty and well prepared. The food’s not perfect, though. The tomato sauce on the meatballs is too watery, while the Pasta Ala Mama (B220) delivers on promises of fresh fettuccini, seasonal mushrooms and juicy Sloane’s sausages, but is badly under-seasoned and flat-out boring. However, these issues are more nit-picking than anything else. The service team deserves a nod, too. They are quick, professional and know how to time their approaches. All in all, the restaurant offers a well-rounded package. Don’t get us wrong, you’re not going to find The Meatchop in Top Tables any time soon, but it’s combination of retro cool and quality food make it a great addition to the Sala Daeng’s poshest street.

ON THE STREET
Known for winning a number of international street photography awards like the 2014 Miami Street Photography Festival and the EyeEm Awards, Tavepong Pratoomwong (IG: @tavepong_street), 36, recently became the first Asian to join the renowned street photography collective, In-public. He's also judging Miami Street Photography 2017 and the Italian Street Photo Festival 2018. Here, he talks about the upcoming Thai street photographers that you should be following.
JUTHARAT "POUPAY" PINYODOONYACHET, 25
SIRAWIT "TEE" KUWAWATTANANONT, 24
KANRAPEE ‘MHING’ CHOKPAIBOON, 27
TAWANWAD "TANG" WANAVIT, 26
MILOZ "MILO" HUTCHA, 29
Where to find her: @poupayphoto What Tavepong says: "Poupay is a student from my first ever workshop for Street Photo Thailand. I saw something in her that stands out from others. She is an observer and always sees the details in things. She knows how to let the photos tell the stories and how to turn an ordinary thing into something extraordinary. Her work is unexpected but never pretentious. On top of this, her feminine personality is a signature part of her photos."
Where to find him: @titi.kittikorn What Tavepong says: "I first met him around February last year. He attended a street photography lecture I gave as guest speaker at Chulalongkorn University. About a year later, he won the Young Street Photography Contest 2017 and his photos have been selected for the final round of almost every international street photo contest. What makes him different from others is the way he combines his personal interest–science–into every one of his works."
Where to find him: @kanrapee.photo What Tavepong says: "I've been following his work since before he moved to New York. I see the development in his photographic style and skills, such as how he now sets his focal point and direction before awaiting the right moment for the shot. You can spot a rawness in Mhing’s works. It has the feel of a fashion photoshoot as well. What I really like is how he'll embed multicultural surrealism and the belief in the existence of extraterrestrial life into all his photos."
Where to find him: @tang_tawanwad What Tavepong says: "Tang’s photos are like watching blockbuster films. In other words, his work has strong, dynamic composition, lighting, colors, movement and mood. He uses a variety of techniques in a shot but that has never overpowered the focal point of the story he wants to tell with his lens. As a result, Tang’s photos are quite impactful and easily digestible for the viewers."
Where to find him: @milozhutcha What Tavepong says: "Milo’s works contain the perfect combination of light, color and humor, something that's captured by timing. Also, his photos catch my attention with a visual composition that is embedded with messages. A lot of his works have an element of surprise that comes through an unexpected composition or an unexpected and small movement in the photos. Any street photographer knows that photo with an element of surprise are rare and hard to capture."
