Thinking with data: Car shopping is a search problem with Spencer Scott from CarGurus and Hamel Soni from Google

T

hrough the internet, car buyers now have more choice than ever when buying a new car. While most dealers have good websites, a social media presence and their cars advertised on multiple online car listing sites, how many are using paid search to its full capability? With a high proportion of car buyers now knowing what they’re looking for, it isn’t a shock that paid search is rapidly gaining ground as buyers use increasingly specific and longer search terms. If you aren’t too sure what paid search is and the huge benefits it can bring to your dealership, the CarGurus keynote speech at CDX 2019 should be high on your priority list to attend. Paid search is all about targeted advertising, and ensuring that the top advertisements on search engines such as Google are closely aligned

14

with what a consumer is looking for in their next car – through keywords. Spencer Scott, CarGurus’ senior vice-president of advertising and digital marketing solutions, will be presenting the company’s findings on the Live Stage at CDX, and explaining how implementing a strategy such as this can increase visits to your website and lead to more sales. CarGurus has accumulated vast knowledge by advertising and promoting its site as a growing company, and is a global leader in paid search. As such, it is in an ideal position to help dealers with this. Most car purchases now start through search engines, and Scott said: ‘Dealers need to come and see the information that we’re going to share at our keynote and at our workshop.’ He will be joined for the keynote presentation by Hamel Soni, senior industry manager for automotive at Google.

The evolution of the car buyer with Carol Fairchild, commercial director at CitNOW

W

ith so much information at their fingertips, buyers need not rely on just one source of information when making their car-buying decisions. Technology has moved on significantly in recent years, and it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. What does that mean for the average car buyer though? CitNOW has already changed the way car buyers interact with dealerships and garages by allowing them more access to these businesses faster. It has undertaken research into who today’s buyer is, how future technologies will change the way

they shop for cars, and what we can expect from buyers in coming years. For a few years now, mobile, video and the digital marketplace have been the great disruptors in the automotive industry as buyers have demanded more information, a simpler car-buying journey and greater transparency plus speed – not to mention the rise of PCP, leasing and the decline of the rental sector. One of the biggest questions for the industry is whether these trends will continue to grow among consumers. CitNOW commercial director Carol Fairchild will talk through the highlights of this piece of research and look at what disruptor will next change the way car buyers shop.

Dealer Panel with Daksh Gupta, John Tordoff and John O’Hanlon

T

o examine the role of the car dealership in the modern-day retail landscape, we have some of the biggest names in the franchised sector. Chief executives Daksh Gupta of Marshall Motor Group, John Tordoff of JCT600 and John O’Hanlon of Waylands Automotive will be speaking on the Car Dealer Magazine Live Stage. Gupta joined Marshall as its CEO in 2008, having been group managing director of Ridgeway Group. Marshall floated on the stock market in 2015. Tordoff has been the chief executive of JCT600 for 31 years, leading the franchised motor firm to become one of the Sunday Times 100 Best MidSized Companies To Work For in 2016 and 2017. Waylands is a new player to the market, with three Volvo dealerships now open, but O’Hanlon is certainly very experienced when it comes to retailing new cars. He previously headed up the Ridgeway Group and sold it to Marshall in 2016. After a year away, he returned with the new dealer group. Since its acquisition of Ridgeway, Marshall has continued to increase its dealership numbers in the UK, with more than 100 carrying the group’s name. In its annual results for 2018, it reported profit growth despite the difficult economic setting. Bradford-based JCT600 also reported a slight uplift in profit in its most recent annual results, with turnover reaching a new high of £1.277bn. The family-owned group has continued to

16

Daksh Gupta expand its portfolio of represented brands and dealership locations in recent times, with a marked improvement in used sales as well. But these three successful groups still have things to worry about in the current climate. Changing purchasing needs from a new generation of buyers, with manufacturers introducing their own online buying platforms, mean that the role of a franchised dealer is being forced to adapt. The type of product bought and the way consumers own what they buy is changing too. Not only are more consumers choosing used

vehicles, there are more electrified vehicles on the market than ever, all of which poses new challenges for franchisees. Consumers are also looking at more affordable and convenient ways to own their vehicles – be that PCP, leasing or subscription services. On this panel, we’ll find out what our guests believe is needed to make a success of a dealership in 2019 and what changes we can expect. Our audience will also get the opportunity to ask questions and get further insight into running some of the biggest and most profitable dealer groups in the UK.

Bridging the physical to digital gap in purchasing with Adam Mepham, sales director at Barclays Partner Finance

P

reparing for the next big shift in automotive retailing is a vital consideration for forward-thinking car dealers. Trends in other areas of retail are accelerating fast and adapting the expectations of consumers. Every time a customer experiences a seamless, fast and reliable purchase process from one outlet, their expectations are set for every other buying situation. Barclays Partner Finance’s research will examine how traditional car purchasing must change to meet these new expectations – be they tackling the challenge of multi-

20

channel buyers, seamlessly bridging the gap between the physical showroom and the digital sphere, or addressing new challenges in communicating effectively with a new generation of buyers. Each stage of the buying process is a new opportunity for the system to fail and for consumers to become frustrated. Avoiding that scenario is all-important. Adam Mepham, sales director for Barclays Partner Finance, will present the company’s findings and shed some light on the challenges and solutions for car dealers. His keynote will look at how you can reshape your business to offer the most convenient and efficient route for buyers.

What’s ahead for the car market? with Martin Forbes, chief executive of Cox Automotive

T

he title of this session is the number-one question on people’s lips but it doesn’t seem as though anyone has the answer – until now. The industry currently feels like a perfect storm of problems. The used market is growing, while there are numerous issues for new, but with car dealers holding on to part-exchanges or buying more good-quality used motors, there’s a lack of supply to feed buyers’ needs. Meanwhile, some of the core traits of buyers are changing drastically too, challenging the role of the car dealer, the dealership and even the car itself in today’s market. Buyers are transforming the system from the very start of the process by shopping and buying in new ways.

The demand for electric vehicles is growing at an exponential rate that battery suppliers can’t keep up with, while more car buyers are looking at subscription options rather than traditional finance deals to get on the road. In its second annual Insight Report, Cox Automotive will examine these different areas of the market, with the aim of providing an indepth analysis of current trends and predicting their impact. The major report will deliver a forecast for the new and used car market, and discuss hot topics including the future of fuel, ownership and mobility, and the changing retail marketplace. This unmissable keynote will highlight the most important findings from the report.

Manufacturer Panel with Karl Howkins, Rob Lindley, Stephen Norman and William Brown

T

Karl Howkins

he manufacturer boss panel has always been a highlight of CDX, giving the Car Dealer Magazine team and audience an opportunity to put some tough questions to company leaders. It’s arguably a harsher time than we’ve seen for many years for those heading the UK arms of global car manufacturers. New vehicle sales are struggling, and it has shone an unforgiving light on some makes and their franchises that may not have had a future-proof strategy in place. It’s easy to see that some of our panellists have really shaken up the way their respective

22

Rob Lindley businesses are run in the past 12 months, but what can we expect from them now? Joining us are Karl Howkins of Citroen, Stephen Norman of Vauxhall, Rob Lindley of Mitsubishi and William Brown of Isuzu. All of them have been in their current job for less than two years. Howkins became MD of Citroen UK last May, having been MD of Opel Switzerland. He has also held senior positions at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles UK, Opel Netherlands and Vauxhall Motors. Norman took on the role of Vauxhall MD just a few months earlier, soon after PSA Groupe bought the British brand, and made a name for himself

when the manufacturer terminated all contracts with its franchisees. Since then, Vauxhall has had its first profitable year in almost two decades. Rob Lindley succeeded Lance Bradley in April 2018. He previously worked as managing director of Mazda in the UK and sales and marketing director of McLaren Automotive. Isuzu UK boss William Brown began his commercial vehicle journey with Isuzu UK as regional manager but quickly rose to general manager. It has seen impressive growth in both sales and franchisee numbers in recent years. The outlook may be bleak but there are still lots

of options for dealers to make money in the new car market. We’ll find out our panellists’ predictions for the industry, sales and economy. Our audience can also pose questions and find out what the future holds for these major brands.

Make your dealership a place people want to work in with Fiona Cottle

S

ytner Car Supermarket Division has a robust strategy for making its dealerships places where employees want to work. People director Fiona Cottle’s workshop will explain why this should be at the core of any successful dealership. She will examine why you should be considering a strategy such as this in your own business, the link between colleague and customer experience and how you can define the values that support them. Sytner Car Supermarket Division, which includes CarShop and The Car People brands, has an ambitious growth strategy and this focus on employees is key to achieving the group’s goals. Cottle said: ‘We’ve been continually evolving our people strategy. When I joined the business two years ago, CarShop already had some really good people initiatives in place, such as processes, policies and technology to support colleague engagement. ‘There have been two things that we’ve focused on in particular. One is around thinking of ourselves

as a retail business – because fundamentally that’s what we are – and as a retailer we rely heavily on our people. That means we want to deliver a world-class experience for our customers, but really, shouldn’t we be delivering a world-class experience to our colleagues as well? ‘The second is around ensuring we have the talent strategy in place to support the growth plans of the business.’ Cottle added: ‘As a business, we had ambitious growth plans, to not just grow organically our existing sites but also add some new sites. That meant we needed a talent strategy that would be part of the overall people strategy.’ CarShop has seen its colleague engagement increase since it implemented this strategy, while staff turnover has dropped and it also boasts one of the highest Glassdoor scores in the automotive industry of 4.9 out of five. This session will take you through how to engage your employees with your company values at every stage of the colleague lifecycle and define what a worldclass colleague experience looks like.

In this session, he will demonstrate how conversations are becoming increasingly customer-led and how this can lead to new opportunities, ensuring that you never miss an inquiry again.

The workshop will not only give delegates insights into when customers are really looking to buy, it will also show them how they can improve the customer journey and increase sales by implementing some of these practices. In addition, attendees will learn how Apple Business Chat, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger can unlock an entirely new revenue stream for their business. Coupar-Evans will be joined in this workshop session at CDX by Sasha Miller, digital manager at Stoneacre Motor Group. Her role involves identifying and implementing new processes such as this to improve the experience for the customer, and she will explain how putting this type of strategy into practice has changed their business.

Tackling the threat of cyber crime with Johnty Mongan

Y

ou might think that cyber crime is something that only affects very large organisations, such as Facebook and the NHS. However, it poses a serious threat to companies of all shapes and sizes – and here at CDX 2019 you can find out how to combat it. Car dealerships are actually one of the most vulnerable organisations when it comes to hacking, says Johnty Mongan, a cyber risk consultant at Gallagher Insurance. Dealing with one of the largest dealer groups in the UK, Mongan sees them being attacked on a daily basis through a mixture of phishing emails and fake invoices. This can not only put a company’s finances under threat, but also its reputation. Mongan helps firms day in day out to improve their infrastructure to help prevent cyber threats, as well as deal with the aftermath of successful hacking attacks. In his interactive session, dealers will learn first-hand how easy it is for an attacker to exploit common vulnerabilities within a company,

and Mongan will show them what a hacker uses to uncover information about a business. The workshop will be split into two parts – insurance and risk management. The former aims to showcase the importance of having cyber insurance and how it can help a business recover in the aftermath of a cyber attack, while the latter will show dealers how to identify threats to their firm and spot weaknesses in their infrastructure. Mongan said: ‘In the 2010 National Security Strategy, cyber security was identified as a tier-one threat (alongside terrorism, war and natural disasters), and for organisations, it should be up there as something that needs fixing. ‘Cyber crime is a huge issue and it presents lots of opportunities to take money out of a business. There is a lack of awareness around cyber security in dealerships. It’s not their bag, after all – they sell cars.’ The workshop will also aim to emphasise the fact that it’s not just a dealer’s personal information at threat – but also a customer’s.

Three digital marketing tricks that really deliver with Tanesha Stafford and Neil Smith

F

ifty per cent of your marketing works – the trouble is, we don’t know which 50 per cent! Every day, dealers spend money on being seen online, but what is the real value? In this session, ex-dealer marketer and co-founder of Armchair Marketing Tanesha Stafford will explain how a powerful, results-driven online strategy can positively boost your offline sales. For dealers, deciding the desired final outcome and how they should be measuring the results can be the hardest part. Stafford will explain how any car dealership can achieve the maximum reach for its brand but

in the most relevant context. This session will give you simple advice that you can take back to your dealership immediately, to not only boost sales by driving in-market car buyers through your business, but also protect those customers from competitors and increase recruitment applications. Stafford will be joined by Neil Smith, operations director at Imperial Cars, who will explain how this marketing approach has helped his company expand from six to 13 sites in only three years. Smith has worked at the car supermarket group for four years, in its most impressive growth period, and has needed to find suitable marketing solutions to support this.

Turning trends in data to your advantage with Paul and Rebecca Boocock

T

he team from Codeweavers will present a workshop looking at what data can reveal about car buyers’ online habits. The session will be presented by Paul Boocock, Codeweavers’ head of data insight, and Rebecca Boocock, who is the head of delivery at the software development firm. Rebecca said: ‘What we’re looking to do is an interactive session that answers a question for the attendees. The question this time revolves around what online behaviour can tell us about car buyers. ‘We’ll look at what their behaviour tells us in terms of what car they will buy, when they’ll buy it and what their journey might be. ‘We’re hoping the workshop will give some nice insight that the dealers will be able to use to tailor their customer journey to attract the right people. ‘And of course it’s also things like if the weather is nice you’re more likely to buy a convertible. It’s trying to tie all of that stuff together.’ She also pointed out that while

keeping tabs on data is key, knowing what to read from it is even more important. ‘I think there’s always a danger with data to overstate its value. It’s only really worth how you interpret it, really. ‘There are so many ways to interpret data. You really need to know its context. We will be talking about how you can potentially be misled by your data. It is extremely valuable, but you always need to take it with a bit of a health warning and not let it completely dictate the direction of your business.’ The duo will also take attendees through what it is that leads car buyers to perform certain actions online at certain times, such as personalising a finance quote or applying for finance. They’ll show how you can find trends within data, model predictions of user behaviour, and use this insight to drive improvements to online car sales. The team aim for workshop attendees to be prepared to start asking the right questions of their data, with a better understanding of how data can help their business.

Stock in the digital age with Simon Caine

R

emarketing is in transition from physical to digital and the need to invest in your stock is more important than ever. Today, stock is so in demand that making sure you can get the most return for every car in the most efficient and cost-effective way is vital. Dealers need to make every vehicle in stock work harder and turn faster for the maximum return. Simon Caine, director of Manheim Vehicle Solutions, part of the Cox Automotive family, will discuss how your dealership can maximise margins and reduce days to sell. In his role, he has responsibility for the defleet and refurbishment of used vehicles from valued partners that include premiumbrand OEMs, national fleet providers

and franchised dealer groups. This workshop will demonstrate how you can make smarter decisions when remarketing vehicles and see margin and profit grow in your dealership. Workshop objectives include: n Sharing an insider’s view on the key factors that make a car fly out of the lanes and on to a forecourt n Demonstrating how repair or refurbishment decisions affect a vehicle’s wholesale value – and the speed at which it can be sold n Why days to sell is the most important metric a dealer should measure – and why sub-30 days should be the target n The impact of quality repair and presentation on customer service This will be an interactive session that makes use of real-world examples and shares insights.

Top tips to win with paid search with Spencer Scott and Nathan Quayle

R

ising overheads, increased competition, sourcing the right stock, government policy and, of course, Brexit are all set to affect car dealers’ operations in 2019. However, dealers are turning to the digital world to counteract these business pressures and more than 40 per cent look to increase their digital tactics this year. With so many options, what is the best digital strategy to adopt? Following on from his keynote speech on why paid search is a must-do for any dealership, Spencer Scott, senior vice-president of advertising and digital marketing solutions at CarGurus, will explain how this can effectively and easily be used to drive more buyers to your website and forecourt. This session will be key for any

dealership looking to boost their business, as using measurable digital tactics such as these is an effective way to reach more in-market car buyers more efficiently. As such, this workshop will also demonstrate how dealerships can measure the effect this strategy is having on their business. Most importantly, it will cover the basics of how paid search works, and how to effectively put it into practice for your dealership. CarGurus has already used paid search to positively affect its own and its dealer partner websites, and now Scott will demonstrate how you can use it too. In addition, Nathan Quayle, marketing manager at Fords of Winsford, will join the workshop to talk about some of the challenges he has faced trying to develop and expand his dealership and how digital marketing has helped along the way.

Why end-to-end online retailing should be the next step for your dealership with Paul Stokes

W

ith GForces predicting the number of cars sold completely online will grow significantly by mid-2020, this workshop will show you why offering customers the option to complete the entire transaction on your website is an opportunity not to be missed. The session will be presented by GForces’ head of online retailing Paul Stokes, who was previously managing director of Rockar. ‘I can look at other industries and see that customers are digitally savvy. They’re already conditioned online by other industries and we should be no different. We’re only giving customers one way to buy and that’s the traditional sales process – that’s got to change,’ says Stokes. Stokes is the man leading GForces’ latest digital offering – NetDirector Transact – but his previous role as the managing director of digital dealership Rockar has allowed him

to see first-hand this inclination for buying cars completely online – sometimes without ever setting foot in a dealership. He will explain what the current marketplace position is and why we are seeing this change. His role has been to look at the way GForces reacts to this, and he’ll show what it has done and how dealers can change to make this easy for their customers. He’s predicting that the number of dealers offering full end-to-end online retailing will rise to at least 10 per cent within a year of the market offering this – and that it won’t just be new car dealers. So far, he notes, a lot of apprehension comes from uncertainty around customers actually using the system and any infrastructural changes the business may need to make. In this session, Stokes will explain how this is achievable for any dealership looking to retail cars online and how it can be implemented.

hile asking ‘what is the point of a car showroom?’ might seem a little out of place at a conference for car dealers, it’s an important question that all good business leaders should be considering for their own dealership. his session from Barclays Partner Finance is vital for any dealership, as our two presenters explore what actually constitutes good conduct in motor finance. But how do you measure ‘good conduct’ and how can you ensure you’re meeting these standards every day? When it’s working in the best way for your dealership, motor finance can enhance it in many ways. It can improve business growth, staff retention and your vital customer relationships, too. Barclays Partner Finance’s Helen Foxworthy and Marc Jones will demonstrate how close partnerships with your finance provider could be

key, as well as the role of regulation when creating a good customer outcome. As a huge bank, Barclays’ data around what cars are being bought on finance, the type of people buying and how these trends are changing is vast. This session will be vital for anyone looking to understand how they can take their finance penetration to the next level or make more money from every purchase – but will also look at the importance of making every deal a great result for your customers, and what results this should help you achieve. This workshop will help you understand why finance plays a vital role in every part of your dealership and can transform its performance.

How to engage the customer of today with Gordon Grant and Oliver Parsons

T

he days of hunting for a car through the classifieds and scanning through blurry photos with snippets of info in local newspapers and car magazines are long gone. But how does the average car buyer look for cars now and how will they do so in the coming years? The average car buyer can now research hundreds of models and compare dozens of quotes from rival dealers in a matter of minutes, and the tools at their disposal are growing more powerful all the time. Consumers are more curious and impatient than ever. For a few years now, mobile, video

and the digital marketplace have been the great disruptors in the automotive industry as car buyers have demanded more information, a simpler car-buying journey and greater transparency and speed – not to mention the rise of PCP, leasing and the decline of the rental sector. Now, the biggest question for the industry is whether these trends will continue to grow among consumers, and afterwards, what will the car buyer pioneer as the next great disruptor(s) of the industry? Gordon Grant, global sales director at CitNOW, and Oliver Parsons, head of sales and UK client services at the company, will be exploring these issues.

The art of the deal through social media with Aiden White

T

wo-thirds of consumers would prefer to message a friend or business than pick up the phone or send an email, according to Facebook. Over the past 18 months, it has developed best practice that lets manufacturers and dealers come together, providing a seamless customer experience through social media that also drives increased conversion rates. By building brand favourability, model awareness and product consideration on Facebook and Instagram – and thanks to Facebook’s ability to track when consumers are showing signals that they are ready to buy – the social media giant can ensure that a dealer’s local marketing activity targets the right consumer at the right time. This is what Aiden White, autos client solutions manager at Facebook UK, will be delving into during his workshop at CDX 2019. Franchised and independent dealers will learn how to harness these insights for their business.

Facebook can do far more than just share posts and give customers a way to get in contact, though, which White will explain in this session. His workshop will also show how manufacturers are building Facebook Messenger bots to help qualify customers and connect them to a retailer, and how Facebook can then seamlessly transfer the customer to the retailer to continue the conversation in real time. This workshop will show examples of best practice, and how you can develop your marketing to capitalise on the new way consumers are preferring to interact with businesses. If your contact rate of consumers has been on the decline, then this workshop will show you how to reverse this trend. White works with the UK’s leading OEMs and their agencies to deliver campaigns across the Facebook system as well as drive closer collaboration with their retailer networks. He grew up with a passion for cars, and spent four years working for Renault UK before joining the Facebook Autos team in 2016.

How law changes after Brexit will affect you with Nona Bowkis

A

t last year’s CDX, Lawgistics were keeping dealers ahead of the GDPR game, making sure they were on the right path and away from the incorrect and widespread advice around consent and marketing lists. This year at CDX, the expert legal firm for the motor trade will be dealing with the false statements and scaremongering around Brexit. Given that other lawyers were recently publicly criticised for their ‘considerable misunderstanding’ of GDPR, this will undoubtedly be a must-do workshop to again sort the wheat from the chaff in the law that matters to you. As changes to the law post-Brexit are a major concern for businesses in the UK, Lawgistics legal adviser Nona Bowkis will explain the alterations – or lack of – that you need to be aware of.

It’s easy to see how many business owners are being led to believe that when, or if, we eventually leave the European Union, workers’ rights may be weakened and cases that have been the basis for many laws could be left open to reinterpretation. A simple search online for changes to the law after Brexit will return hundreds of pages of results, with many specifically focused on employment. A report from the Employment Lawyers’ Association expressed concerns that without the government making it clear that the UK would still be bound by EU case law, workers’ rights could be left vulnerable. However, Lawgistics has examined the state of play and will be able to reveal exactly what changes any dealer may need to prepare for, and where they need not be concerned.

W

omen in the Motor Industry (WITMI) is returning to CDX for the fifth time. Having quickly become one of the most popular features of the event, each year it brings together a group of panellists to discuss the need for the industry to adapt to a changing workforce. The challenges of being a woman working in the motor trade sparked the necessity of our first breakout session in 2015 to address these points. However, over the years, the discussions have highlighted that a lot of the issues that are associated with women frequently affect men, too. In 2016, CDX opened up the group as a forum for both genders but to air issues from a panel of women, and in this year’s session we will talk about how as employers we can be more supportive of our staff in general, to promote a positive working environment where people perform at their best. On our panel to offer her expert advice on the rules and regulations of

52

managing people will be Lawgistics legal adviser Nona Bowkis, who will explain some of the changes in employment law and will answer your questions as well. Available to build on some of the points from her workshop will be Fiona Cottle, head of people at Sytner Car Supermarket Division, which includes CarShop and The Car People. The business has transformed the way it works to be more accepting of different people’s needs, which has led it to make a marked improvement in performance. This open forum is always an opportunity for lively discussion, practical actions and an insight into different experiences in the industry.

T

he Dealership of the Future is a new addition to the expo hall for 2019, bringing together a collection of futurethinking products that you can expect to see taking more prominence in dealerships over the coming years. In association with GardX, we’ve teamed up with industry suppliers to showcase the products and innovations they think will become an essential part of that vision. As the industry accelerates its adoption of technology in dealerships, there is more for dealers to learn – and buy. That’s why we hope this new zone will offer an insight into what is available on the market and how it can add value to your business. GardX, Crucially Digital, GForces, eDynamix and AirShroud will bring their individual expertise and talents to bear on the session. Examples will include advances in digital imagery, end-to-end e-commerce, plus lockers of the future. GardX will bring together these digital and physical moments in the

sales process, with its 360 product getting consumers closer to the cars from the comfort of their homes, while its in-store paint protection products offer a great way to make more money from every sale. From the start of the process, before a customer even reaches a dealership, it’s possible for them to complete the entire purchase online. Dealership of the Future will let delegates see this in action and understand how it could work for their dealership with integrations from GForces. Meanwhile, Crucially Digital will demonstrate how dealers can bring their showroom and the sales process to life via different types of digital signs. With so many creative options to consider, this aspect will surely be a lightbulb – or LED screen – moment for many. In a similar way, AirShroud makes the car-buying process even more special for consumers. Autopoint Lockers from eDynamix will also demonstrate ways that dealers can make the servicing process more seamless for customers with a new digital strategy.

A collection of products you can expect to see taking more prominence.
