WELCOME. O
ver the near-decade we’ve been holding the Used Car Awards, there have been some incredible moments when the recipients found out they’d won. I often position myself somewhere just off stage to see when our host Mike Brewer reads out the names of the winners so I can witness their reaction. Seeing a whole table rise with elation, throwing their hands in the air and screaming makes the Used Car Awards what it is – a party, celebrating a year of hard work. We had plenty of that this year. Trade Price Cars’ roar was certainly noticeable when it was named Used Car Dealership of the Year (Over 100 Cars). It probably helped that it had three tables of its team there to shout. But our Lifetime Achievement Award winner this year was something else. We’d carefully engineered Tom Hartley’s attendance at the awards. I’d called his son and business partner Carl a few weeks before the event to get him in on the surprise and he’d managed to coerce his old man into attending on some false pretence. I’d had a couple of calls from Tom ahead of the event but carefully dodged them – I was convinced that if I spoke to him I’d give the game away. On the night, I had to do the same, swerving him at the pre-dinner drinks, as the award was set to be the very last to be announced. For those of you who don’t know Tom – which I would find very hard to believe – he’s a supercar dealer from Derbyshire who has been selling cars since he was a boy. His biography is well worth a read and charts his rise in the car industry, his battles with car manufacturers and some amazing tales of ducking and diving over the years. I met him last year at his amazing £10m showroom (a video of which can be found on our YouTube channel), built on the same estate as his house, next to the famous ‘lake’ where he photographs his multi-million-pound motors. When his name was called out at the Used Car Awards by Brewer, the walk to the stage was a long one, through a room that was standing to applaud the industry legend. It meant I didn’t actually see him until he walked up the steps to the stage. It was then that I realised how much it meant to him. The speech Tom gave will go down as one of the most memorable Used Car Awards moments. ‘I’ve given the car business my life as a kid, a boy, as a man, as a husband and now as a grandad,’ he said. ‘This is the icing on the cake. You have to earn these and they’re priceless. I wouldn’t take £10bn for this, never mind £10m.’ You can read all about who else won what at this year’s awards in this special issue of the magazine. There were 30 winners named on the special night – held in person just before Omicron really started to take hold. Phew. With used cars dominating the headlines now and likely well into 2022, we’re already looking forward to being back at The Brewery next year for another night of celebration. If you want to be there, make sure you nominate yourself when they open – you’ve got to be in it to win it, after all! Enjoy the issue.
The speech Tom gave will go down as one of the most memorable Used Car Awards moments.

INVESTIGATION
2021 THE WINNERS AND LOSERS
As the automotive industry says goodbye to 2021 and prepares for whatever 2022 can throw at it, we take a look at the sales triumphs and tribulations among the brands – and there are one or two surprises!
I
t’s been a funny old year for the car market, with on and off restrictions, stock shortages and used cars that are worth more than new, but in among all that there have been some success stories – as well as some brands that have really struggled. Here are our winners and losers for 2021, all of which is based on SMMT data from January to November.
POLESTAR
Registrations to date in 2021: 3,663 Registrations to date in 2020: 608 Sales increase: 502.47% The Swedish-Chinese Volvo EV offshoot is really starting to get noticed, making a dent in the success of the Tesla 3 in the premium compact executive EV market. So far in 2021, Polestar has shifted 3,663 examples of the stylish Polestar 2 – the BMW 3 Series of the electrified generation. Even with a price tag of £49,900 before you’ve glanced at the options list, it’s a car that has clearly fired a few imaginations, and the brand can only grow from there.
HYUNDAI
KIA
FORD
South Korean brands have generally been less affected by the global semiconductor crisis than their peers, And with 64,940 sales by the end of November, Hyundai is back on track. The Kona and plug-in Ioniq have boosted sales, while a series of heritage-inspired EVs point to some curiosities around the corner.
Kia was always going to bounce right back, and the 87,914 registrations it has achieved so far in 2021 put it in sixth place overall in the UK car market, ahead of Vauxhall and snapping on the heels of Toyota. Fresh models such as the new Sportage and soon-to-be-launched new e-Niro will help it continue its stride in 2022.
At the end of 2021, it looks like Ford will relinquish its position as the UK’s best-selling car brand for the first time in four decades. The Blue Oval has been hit really hard by the global semiconductor shortage and has also seen the drop-off in diesel sales hit its fleet sector presence. Its fall in registrations means it’s slipped behind Volkswagen as the UK’s best-selling brand, and with no end in sight to the semiconductor problems, its bounce-back may take some time…
Registrations to date in 2021: 64,940 Registrations to date in 2020: 44,141 Sales increase: 47.12%

MG
CUPRA
SUBARU
MG is arguably the most desirable new franchise out there at the moment, as proved by its network growing by more than 40 dealers in 2021. There are now over 150 MG dealers, and between them they’ll have cracked 30,000 cars by the end of the year, almost half of them battery-electric. That’s an incredible performance from a brand that as nowhere just a couple of years ago – almost half of Hyundai’s year-to-date volume, with a seven-year warranty and an engaged customer base and dealer network. There’s a new ZS EV on the scene now and it offers a 270-mile range. Dealers are selling them with their eyes shut.
Eighteen months ago, Cupra didn’t exist. But so far this year, Seat’s oddball performance-luxury offshoot has clearly found a niche, with 7,020 new cars registered by the end of November. That translates to a whopping 12,663.64 per cent increase! Critically, those sales haven’t come at the expense of Seat, either. The Spanish brand has seen a two per cent sales increase of its own, despite many of its models evolving into Cupras. Now THAT’S a success story!
Sales of 1,931 and a market share of 0.5 per cent might not seem worth shouting about too loudly, but for Subaru this is a 135 per cent sales increase over 2020 and related directly to the brand taking on a full review of the business and its network. The move includes a new management team, with the appointment of former Citroen Ireland managing director Pat Ryan as its new MD, Kevin Hilliard as brand director and ex-Vauxhall man Bryan Cliff as events and PR manager. Subaru is set to launch an EV next year. For a brand that many in the UK wrote off, the future is looking more positive.
MITSUBISHI
JAGUAR
RENAULT
Most Mitsubishi dealerships in the UK have closed now as the brand brings its European presence to an end, and of the 5,125 units registered this year around half have been pre-registered to clear forecourts as dealers clamour to get new brands through the doors, with MG, Isuzu and SsangYong being the main beneficiaries.
It’s a good job that Jaguar has its I-Pace EV and E-Pace SUV, since sales of the brand’s other models – the XE and XF – have fallen off a cliff as the market shift from fossil fuels continues. But it’s a challenging time for Jaguar, with an ageing customer demographic and a need to diversify further to engage new buyers. The new product is coming, but for the dealers it can’t come soon enough.
Renault’s story is similar to Ford’s, with the semiconductor shortage affecting its ability to supply cars across all European markets. The Zoe continues to do well in the EV market but is rapidly ageing, and the rest of the model range is in limited supply. Its sales are down by a third, and with buyers moving to different brands with better availability, such as Kia, Hyundai and MG, it could be a very difficult position for the French maker to return from.

TOP 100
Arnold Clark retains crown as profit king The numbers have been crunched for our latest chart of the most successful dealers. James Batchelor spoke to the boss of the firm heading the list.
INTERVIEW EDDIE HAWTHORNE CEO, ARNOLD CLARK
T
he 100 most profitable car dealers in the UK have been revealed – with franchised dealer Arnold Clark at the top. Now in its second year, the Car Dealer Top 100 pitches franchised and independent dealers against each other, giving the most insightful picture into the automotive retail landscape of 2020/21. Just like last year’s league, this year’s Top 100 – sponsored by Carwow and compiled by finance expert Mike Jones and Interpath – ranks dealers by EBITDA. Accounts up to the end of March 2021 were used. In total, the dealers made a combined profit of more than £1.65bn – up from the £1.16bn that was made last year. There was an increase in the number of franchised dealers ranked, while the number of independents fell from 25 to 12. The top independent was Car Giant, with a £29m EBITDA profit, ranking it 11th overall. 08 | CarDealerMag.co.uk
T
he past 12 months have made Arnold Clark a ‘fitter, leaner business’ believes the firm’s boss. The Scottish-based dealer group, which was named the most profitable dealer in the Car Dealer Top 100 for 2020/21, saw profits and turnover soar despite enduring lockdowns and restrictions on trading. It topped our unique league table again with a whopping £354.2m EBITDA profit in 2020, increasing its EBITDA profit by a massive £159.9m, or 82 per cent, versus the year before. It was also nearly double that of second-placed Sytner Group, which raked in a £177.5m EBITDA profit. Accounts filed with Companies House show that Arnold Clark turned over £3.8bn last year – down 14.9 per cent on the year before because of the impact of Covid-19 and the enforced temporary closure of its retail sites. In an exclusive interview with Car Dealer, CEO Eddie Hawthorne put the stunning performance and its retained first place in the Top 100 down to his staff. ‘I’m very proud of the staff – they have worked tremendously hard over the last 18 months and have just taken everything that was thrown at them,’ he said. ‘We’ve managed to work our way through this and genuinely it was a really great performance.’ Hawthorne said Arnold Clark didn’t rely on the furlough scheme as heavily as some other large dealer groups did, taking £64.3m between March and October 2020. ‘We used the furlough scheme in the first lockdown because, like everybody else, we didn’t know what was around the corner. ‘At its peak, we had 12,000 staff on furlough and yes, we did get a significant amount of money from the job retention scheme, but every penny of that went to the employees – that really just covered about two months’ payroll.’ Despite the pressures of 2020, though, Hawthorne said he felt that Arnold Clark had emerged as a fitter business. ‘We’re leaner, slimmer, fitter and a wee bit more agile than we were before,’ he remarked. ‘Our main development has been the digital journey that we have with our customers. ‘We’ve been working on this for a number of years, and if there was anything good to come out of this pandemic, it was the acceptance of our digital journey from our customers. ‘This has seen us through a lot of the challenges – we were still able to communicate and do business with our customers.’

Where does Daksh’s destiny lie as Marshall is set to be snapped up?
T
It’s got consumers selling their unwanted motors to it via We Buy Any Car and has recently decided to sell some of those used cars directly via the toothy-smile Rylan-fronted Cinch.
he speed at which the £325m Constellation Automotive Group deal for Marshall Motor Group happened shocked us all. Just a few weeks after Marshall CEO Daksh Gupta had triumphantly revealed the £64.5m Motorline acquisition deal – one he’d finalised while battling Covid-19 – the news broke that a deal for his own firm was in the offing. It came out just as the stock market was closing on a Friday: a statement that revealed the group’s biggest shareholder – the Marshall family – was considering selling its 64 per cent stake in the business. Talks were said to be taking place with Constellation – the owner of BCA, Cinch and We Buy Any Car – and, on the Monday, it was effectively sealed. The Marshall family had agreed to sell its majority stake in the business, which set the wheels rolling for one of the car industry’s biggest success stories to be taken private. Constellation is a juggernaut and with this deal will have every piece of the automotive jigsaw puzzle in place. It already has trade disposal of used cars via BCA, it’s got consumers selling their unwanted motors to it via We Buy Any Car (which again fuels its auction lanes) and it has recently decided to sell some of those used cars directly via the toothy-smile Rylan-fronted Cinch. With this Marshall deal, it’ll add new car sales to the party and another ready supply of part-exchange used cars to do what it wants with. These part-exes are often the premium sort that never make it to the auctions, as dealers like to keep the best of them for themselves – now Constellation will be able to decide what it wants to do with them and via which arm of its sprawling business it disposes of them. Many in the industry will look at this deal and assume that it’s Cinch’s step into the physical world – just like Cazoo did when it gobbled up Imperial. While that might be the goal, it’s something that’s unlikely to go down well with the manufacturer partners Marshall has worked hard on fostering. The last thing Constellation wants to do is ruin that. There are far easier wins for the buyer to get its cash back swiftly. There’s the lucrative remarketing contract for a start. This currently sits with arch rival Manheim and will likely be moved very quickly to BCA. Add that contribution to some ‘efficiencies’ between the two businesses that are likely to be found in back office functions and Marshall’s EBITDA profit figure of £53.7m in 2020 (likely to be much more in 2021) could easily return £75m a year to Constellation after a few savings are found. That’s repayment of the £325m outlay in just over four years plus a whole load of property assets paid for. Makes good business sense, doesn’t it? But the big question mark remains over what happens to boss Daksh Gupta. One of the legends of the motor industry, Gupta has built that dealer group into one of the top six most profitable – according to the most recent Car Dealer Top 100 – since he joined. And with the ink still drying on the Motorline deal when the buyout was announced, it is clear he still has plenty of ambition for the group to grow further still. Since the takeover talks started, Gupta has been banned from talking to the press – something that he, and we, find quite strange. It feels like he’s been sideswiped by this news as much as everyone else. When we handed him the Outstanding Achievement of the Year trophy at the Used Car Awards for his leadership during the pandemic – held on the very evening the deal was announced – he was clearly still in shock. Looking back at the photos taken on the night, his face couldn’t exactly be described as happy. I’m sure it’ll soon transpire that one of the main reasons Constellation wanted to buy Marshall was to snatch Gupta himself. As signing deals go, buying a whole business to grab the top talent might sound extreme, but in this strange world it doesn’t actually sound that unfeasible, does it?

It might make no scents to some but Renault’s got a winning whiff
L
ike so many of you, I expect, I always leave my Christmas shopping to the last minute. As a result, just days before the turkey gets stuffed, I find myself running around like the proverbial blue-arsed fly in pursuit of a headless chicken, doing battle with grumpy and miserable people in Birmingham’s Bullring shopping centre while we all pretend to show each other some Christmas cheer. In my case, this normally involves a deftly and strategically placed elbow to get some of my fellow shoppers out of the way, accompanied by ‘Merry [redacted] Christmas’ under my breath. Anyway, I digress. During this period of immediate pre-Christmas stress – a situation not helped by having to earn a month’s salary in a fortnight just to make December pay for itself – I nearly always find myself in the default position of queuing up at the smellies counter, although with no Debenhams this year (or ever again, it seems), I’m not even sure where I can buy the smellies. Isn’t it funny, though, how certain smells appeal to certain people? And moreover, how other smells make people recoil in horror. For me, probably the nicest smell in the world is that of grilling bacon with an undertone of fresh toast or coffee in the background. Alas, Jean Paul Gaultier has yet to come up with a bottle of squirty whiff that smells of a high-quality transport café, so instead I have to treat the Good Lady Her Indoors to something a little less authentic. Admittedly, it smells nicer than BO, but then so it should at the thick end of £70 a bottle. All of which got me thinking... (And yes, I appreciate that can be dangerous – as you’re about to find out.) Surely I’m not the only one who recognises that certain makes and models of car have their own distinctive aromas, and that some are far more pleasant than others. Fords, for example, have always had a pretty distinctive fragrance, especially those built in the late 1990s and early 2000s, which have an overwhelming but far from unpleasant smell from their overpoweringly fluffy velour. Indeed, if it weren’t considered a bit weird, I’d probably have a velour driver’s seat from a Mk2 Mondeo in my house just so I could wander up and sniff it occasionally. Yes, I’m odd like that. It’s not just Fords, either. Jaguars always smell a bit like Northfield Conservative Club (no, really). Volvos are always intoxicatingly fresh and smell like a cross between a steam room and a doctor’s surgery reception. And if you’ve ever had the pleasure of travelling in an early 2000s Hyundai or Kia (from the days before they were big news), then you’ll know exactly what I mean when I say ‘wet nappy’. I honestly don’t know how people managed to spend more than five minutes at a time inside one with such a pungent whiff of ammonia in the background, and no matter how old the car got or how many Magic Trees you dangled from the rear view mirror, it was a scent that was impossible to get rid of. Or, indeed, get off your clothes afterwards. Which brings me neatly on to Renault. If ever the smell of a car was going to polarise opinion then it would be the French manufacturer’s distinctive aroma. It’s a combination of fabric, new carpet and super glue that you’d expect to fade with time, yet it never does. The smell of a Renault is like that of no other car. And do you know what? Personally, I absolutely love it. I enjoy it to the extent that whenever I have a second-hand Renault on the forecourt
The smell of a Renault is like that of no other car. And do you know what? Personally, I absolutely love it.
Come on Mr Gaultier – isn’t it about time you unleashed a bottled fragrance by the name of ‘Eau d’Espace’?
(I confess, I do always try to keep at least one of them handy for my olfactory benefit), I occasionally like to open the door, climb in and inhale deeply. I’ve been known to do this under the pretence of going somewhere quiet to take a phone call, and on a couple of occasions where I’ve been at the auction and a velour-trimmed Laguna or Espace has gone through the block, I’ve made an excuse to go and have a sit in it just so I can twitch my nose a bit. I’m like some kind of addict, and if you could get that Renault fragrance by the gram, I don’t doubt for a second that I’d be snorting it as if it were Colombian marching powder. There are two disadvantages to this. Well, more than that if you consider the social isolation that would arise from going public on the subject, but on a day-to-day scale there are a couple that stand out. First of all, in order to enjoy whiffing the Renault scent on a daily basis, you have to own a second-hand Renault, and based on past experience this is a fairly risky thing to do. Probably less risky than a habit with the Colombian stuff, but at the same time probably no cheaper. The second issue is that my otherwise quite well-adjusted significant other absolutely despises that Renault smell, meaning this is not an experience we can enjoy together, and that in addition, she thinks I’m rather weird for sniffing Renaults in the first place. Some people, it seems, just cannot understand. So while Herself’s Christmas present will inevitably come from the perfume counter at whatever remaining department store is left open in Birmingham city centre, my own preferred fragrance remains unavailable, meaning that I have to smother myself in Brut 33 every morning in order to mask the naturally heady aroma of Birmingham male. In my heart, however, I’d much rather smell like a Renault interior. So come on Mr Gaultier – isn’t it about time you unleashed a bottled fragrance by the name of ‘Eau d’Espace’, and made one slightly oddball middle-aged car dealer a very happy man? Or if not, at least a perfume that smells of bacon?
I’m like some kind of addict, and if you could get that Renault fragrance by the gram, I don’t doubt for a second that I’d be snorting it as if it were Colombian marching powder. CarDealerMag.co.uk | 13
Hidden in plain sight – big changes coming to the retail car industry
I
Mobil was a very generous partner. Our garage was full of Pyrex cookware, cut crystal, cool bags and all sorts of other stuff.
14 | CarDealerMag.co.uk
didn’t fall into the motor trade as many do. My parents owned a petrol station that housed a few used cars and an MOT facility, therefore for any young person interested in cars, what better parental occupation could result in old cars of all shapes, sizes and values being left on the drive to light a fire for a career that has never been extinguished? One of my fondest memories as a 10-or-so-year-old was being taken to Thruxton, courtesy of the petrol company Mobil, to be driven about by then-touring car driver Lionel Abbott in a Sierra Cosworth and then allowed to drive on a skid pan while sitting on my dad’s lap. Mobil was a very generous partner. Among trips my parents won, our garage was full of Pyrex cookware, cut crystal, cool bags and all sorts of other stuff. The profitability and power of the so-called ‘seven sisters’ of the oil industry was legendary, so it was no surprise that there was plenty of money to go round for high-performing retailers. At the turn of the 1990s, though, things began to change. Supermarkets started to offer fuel from purpose-built self-service stations, so the writing was on the wall for an attendant service station such as our family business. My parents sold it to another ‘sister’ – Gulf – for it to convert it to a self-service site. Just 10 years later, the brand Mobil was gone, as were the majority of Gulf stations, and the site was sold to a developer. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, oil companies merged or consolidated and independent retailers disappeared. The business life cycle had taken hold, and with internal combustion engines now due to be outlawed from new in 2030, the retail petrol business is experiencing its final throes. At the time of writing, the shareholders of Marshall Motor Group are to be recommended to accept an offer of £325m from BCA, Cinch and WeBuyAnyCar owner Constellation. The retail car industry has been experiencing a period of consolidation for years but relatively unnoticed. Manufacturers have been merging and forming strategic alliances, and retail groups have been getting bigger. But like any climate change denier pointing out the icebergs that still exist in the sea, this move by Constellation is the huge crash of ice falling into the warming waters. If the takeover is approved, Constellation will dominate the retail market in every physical aspect – a steady stream of used cars from WeBuyAnyCar, countless preparation and refinishing sites, new car retail outlets and a used car retail platform in Cinch. I expect to see mergers and acquisitions moves from well-funded established retailer groups to protect territory and falling aftersales revenues AND from Cazoo, which risks losing its strategic foothold in disrupting the industry. I would love to be a fly on the wall in manufacturer head offices right now. Manufacturers won’t fear Constellation as a partner – in some ways they will probably welcome the strength it brings to their respective networks – but it will result in conversations around retail behaviours, franchised territorial boundaries and the very shape of their distribution networks.

t was an absolute honour to have everyone together again at The Brewery in London for this celebration of the very best in the used car business. The last time we were there was way back in 2019, just before the world changed so suddenly and so dramatically – and a lot’s happened since… Here at Car Dealer we’ve changed the way we deliver you the news, completely digitising our business during the pandemic. That included last year’s Used Car Awards reveals, but we were determined to hold the ceremony as a physical event again as soon as possible, because we know how much the sector enjoys getting together for our glitzy bash honouring this backbone of the automotive industry. Car dealer businesses have not only survived during the pandemic, they’ve thrived – and they’ve done this through innovation and good old-fashioned hard work. The industry has transformed since those early dark days of the first lockdown. Vaulting every hurdle the pandemic placed in the industry’s way, dealers adapted to continue serving their customers. We’ve seen disruptors arrive on the scene, used car prices soar 30 per cent this year alone – and the word ‘unprecedented’ used far too many times... But when thousands of used cars have grown in value so much that they’re now worth more than new, there’s really no other way to describe it...

Each entry comes under scrutiny and judges eliminate those dealers who don’t come up to scratch in our first round of mystery shopping.
We’re incredibly proud to be able to host these special awards that are unique in giving everyone the chance to shine in the spotlight. Judging for this year’s Used Car Awards was rigorous. Our mystery shoppers had their work cut out contacting every single car dealership that made it to the shortlist and scoring them in a huge variety of categories. We take the judging process very seriously indeed – not only do dealers have to have sparkling online reviews, but the service they give customers remotely and in person is assessed, too. Congratulations, then, to everyone who made it on to our shortlist – that’s no mean feat in itself. And to those of you who picked up highly commended and winners awards at this year’s ceremony, a huge well done. You really are the very best at what you do. A big thank you must also go out to all our sponsors for making the event happen – especially our headline partner Black Horse. We truly appreciate all your fantastic support. Congratulations again to everyone – we can’t wait for UCA 2022!

C
ar Quay boss Jamie Caple picked up the Dealers’ Dealer Award for the third year in a row at this year’s Used Car Awards. Caple was recognised having built a reputation in the industry for going the extra mile for fellow car dealers. This was the first award of the night, and as event host Mike Brewer explained, it’s designed to recognise the dealer who goes above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to looking out for others in the industry. ‘Our winner has been at the forefront of connecting the motor trade via a brilliant car dealer group on Facebook and is always entertaining his contemporaries. ‘He’s a superb dealer who leads his business from the front,’ said Brewer at the event. The prize is voted for by other dealers in the industry, and is the only award of its kind on the night. Caple has become a familiar face to many on the Car Sales Dealer Group, often doing live videos to talk through people’s problems or highlight issues. He said: ‘I’m just speechless to say I’m Dealers’ Dealer and that my industry colleagues have voted for me. ‘I try to share the love. I want everyone in the industry to do well. ‘If I can help people I will. We have such an amazing opportunity in this industry and if I can help and support others in any way, then I will.’ Car Dealer Magazine editor-in-chief James Baggott added: ‘Dealers’ Dealer is one of the most coveted awards of the night as it’s decided by nominations from other dealers. ‘Jamie has won this award more than once now, which really is testament to his reputation in the industry. ‘He’s proved himself again and should be extremely proud of this achievement.’

pencers MOT & Service Centre received top honours in the Service & Repair Outlet category at this year’s Used Car Awards. It’s a tough task to be a master of both the workshop and a car sales operation, but the Norwich business impressed mystery shoppers with its great customer service. Awards host Mike Brewer said: ‘Used cars need to be looked after properly and this award aims to recognise the best service and repair outlets in the market. ‘In this category, we aim to celebrate the businesses that look after customers and their cars to the highest standards. ‘Our judges were not only looking for consistently high scores in online reviews, they also wanted to see a great website, friendly phone manners and a high quality of service. ‘Our winner combines excellent customer feedback with an easy-to-use-and-navigate website to take our top honours.’ Spencers MOT & Service Centre owner Spencer Gray said: ‘We’re really pleased. It’s fantastic news for us and the staff to show all of the hard work that’s been put in over the last couple of years. ‘We’re dedicated to our customers and try to keep our service at the highest level possible. We work hard in the local area to build relationships. ‘We’re humbled. We didn’t think we’d be taking home an award tonight, so it really means the world.’ Gray also picked up the award for Used Car Dealer Principal on the night. Car Dealer editor-in-chief James Baggott said: ‘Spencers Car Sales blew away our mystery shoppers with their top customer service. ‘They found the team were exceptional and the experience was smooth and easy, whether talking to service or sales. It’s a slick operation and easy to see why they have so many happy customers. ‘They should be extremely proud to be walking away with not one, but two awards – for Best Used Car Service Centre and Spencer Gray’s award for dealer principal of the year.’

here have been a huge number of brilliant motor trade suppliers that have dug deep during the pandemic to help out their car dealer partners. However, there was only one that could win the award for Used Car Product of the Year. The victor was a supplier that has been supporting dealers minute by minute with its live pricing data – Cap HPI. As used car prices have moved in ways no one could have predicted, Cap HPI has been putting its knowledge out there for dealers at every stage. Awards host Mike Brewer said as he handed over the trophy: ‘Our winner has been on the front foot throughout the pandemic, sharing key data with dealers when they needed it most. ‘This firm’s constant supply of up-to-the-minute information has helped dealers stay on top of pricing and, as a result, increased their profitability.’ Derren Martin, head of valuations at Cap HPI, said: ‘We try to help out where we can, particularly as it’s been very turbulent. ‘Receiving this award means a huge amount though, and it’s fantastic to get the recognition. ‘The team have worked so hard and are going to be absolutely delighted when they find out we won.’ Car Dealer Magazine editor-in-chief James Baggott added: ‘Since the start of the pandemic, Cap HPI has been a fantastic source of insight for both us at Car Dealer and dealers across the country. ‘It’s really been a fascinating time to follow what’s happening in the market, and Cap HPI has been a lifeline for many dealers who have gone from following their gut to watching the figures rise.’

You’ve got to put the work in and you’ll see the results eventually.’ Emerald was recognised for its eye-catching branding that is recognisable wherever on social media you might find it, as well as its dedication to posting unique, attentiongrabbing content. Car Dealer Magazine editor-in-chief James Baggott said: ‘When it comes to big car dealership personalities online, they don’t get much bigger than the superb Emerald House of Cars. ‘This team has great fun with its social media accounts, from Facebook to Instagram, and has gained a loyal following by promoting the fun it has selling cars. ‘It was the standout winner of our Social Media User category and they should be rightly proud of their win.’

We’ve been doing video for some years now and we’ve seen a lot of dealerships start doing it too, but we’re really pleased we’ve been pushing since the beginning. ‘Since Auto Trader first allowed you to add videos, we were there on day one.’ Awards host Mike Brewer said: ‘Great video helps sell more cars. That’s a fact. ‘Consumers don’t just like to have it these days, they demand it – and the very best dealers are pandering to their needs. ‘Whether that’s great videos of cars for sale on their websites or personalised videos for prospective customers, the best dealers are putting video first.’ Car Dealer editor-in-chief James Baggott said: ‘Targa Florio Cars should be extremely proud of this award. ‘The Best Use of Video category is always very competitive and this year was no exception. ‘Particularly in the luxury car market, dealers are always upping their video game, so well done again to the team.’ a

sed Car Website of the Year winner Croyland Car Megastore was praised by the judges for its slick website and how easy it makes shopping for a car online. Not only is its website simple to navigate and clear to understand, it also has a range of features that make buying a car online simple. Its website has a simple search function so customers can easily find a car that meets their needs and is within their budget. Another very important feature since the pandemic has been the ability to reserve or buy a car online, which Croyland Car Megastore also allows customers to do. Mark Swindells, general manager at Croyland Car Megastore, said: ‘Two years ago, we were highly commended in the Used Car Website of the Year award, so it’s fantastic to come back tonight and win. ‘We’ve got a simple and transparent website, and I think that works well for the customer. ‘We’re so proud to win it, and the team back at base and those here will all be thrilled.’ Car Dealer Magazine editor-in-chief James Baggott said: ‘With four nominations in our Used Car Awards, Croyland Car Megastore is clearly doing something right. ‘One of their team – Jamie Burton – secured a well-deserved highly commended in the Future Star category, and they took another in the Used Car Supermarket category, too. ‘But top honours were secured for their brilliant website, which impressed our judges with its slick design and great detail. ‘They should be very proud of their accolades picked up at the 2021 awards!’

It was a night of double celebration for Spencers, with the MOT wing of the business – Spencers MOT & Service Centre – also winning our Service and Repair Outlet of the Year award. ur Future Star award is one of the most important as it indicates the people to look out for in the industry, and collecting the prestigious trophy this year was Elliott Rosoman from Trade Price Cars. Throughout the year, he impressed his bosses and customers with the high quality of his work at a busy dealership. His work also came to the attention of our judges, who decided to name him the 2021 Used Car Awards Future Star. The youngster’s journey to joining the Essex-based business was actually an unconventional one – after initially buying a vehicle from the dealership. He was so impressed with the experience that he then spent a year chasing the firm for a job, before finally being hired 12 months later. Rosoman believes the experience has put him in good stead for his work and he’s determined not to let anyone down. After coming off stage, he told Car Dealer: ‘I actually bought a car from Trade Price Cars and was so impressed with them I thought I want to work here. ‘I chased them for about a year before they hired me and now I’m not going to let them down.’ Rosoman beat highly commended pair Jamie Burton from Croyland Car Megastore and Car Quay’s Jack Heywood to claim the honours. Among those to be impressed by his work was Car Dealer editor-in-chief James Baggott. He said: ‘Future Star is a really important award that celebrates the best young dealers coming through the ranks. ‘There were some fantastic candidates shortlisted this year, so a huge well done to Elliott for coming out on top. ‘He impressed his bosses and customers alike, as well as our judges. ‘We will follow his progress with interest and hope to see him winning many more awards in the years to come.’

cklam Car Centre clinched the Used Car Customer Care trophy at the 2021 Car Dealer Used Car Awards. The Middlesbrough-based family business came out on top in a category that was hotly contested, with judges looking for great online feedback. Our mystery shoppers raved about Acklam, which called them back instantly before offering a great service throughout the process. It even sent them a WhatsApp video of the car that they were looking to buy. That service, teamed with a plethora of superb online reviews, was enough for Acklam to take the title. Chris Andrews, manager at Acklam Car Centre, said: ‘We’ve been in the trade now for over 20 years and every single year we’ve really worked hard on improving our customer care. ‘We’ve got a really refined sales process. Claire [Marsden] has been with us for 20 years looking after customers, and we’ve got hundreds of reviews now. ‘We train our team from start to finish – when the customer comes in, we are making sure they are getting the best treatment.’ Marsden, who is the service and aftercare manager, added: ‘The team work so hard, and from looking online all of the way through to the aftersales, our customers get the best service.’ It was a doubly successful night for Acklam, which also won the title of Best Used Car Dealership in the 51 to 100 cars category. Car Dealer editor-in-chief James Baggott said: ‘Acklam Car Centre can be incredibly proud of their achievements at the Used Car Awards. They were nominated in THREE categories and won two! ‘Our judges loved the way they looked after their customers, and they were worthy winners of our customer care category. he award for Specialist Used Car Dealership of the Year was hard fought for at the 2021 Used Car Awards, but in the end it was SuperMini UK that collected top honours. The Nottingham-based firm won glowing reviews from our judges, who were impressed with its great website, excellent customer service and top knowledge of the cars that it sells. Our mystery shoppers were also offered a top-rate service, which was enough for SuperMini UK to take this year’s gong. The dealership specialises in used Minis and previously won at the 2018 Used Car Awards, when it collected the prize for the Used Car Dealership of the Year for up to 50 cars. Now, three years on, bosses were thrilled to be collecting a gong again. Mathew Clarke, owner of SuperMini UK, said: ‘This one came out of the blue a little bit. We specialise in Minis and everyone knows us as the Mini people. To get the recognition as a specialist really means the world.’ SuperMini UK, which also offers competitive finance packages as well as services, MOTs and repairs, beat stiff competition from the highly commended pair of Pilote Classics and Quirks Car Company to take top spot. Among those impressed by its performance was Car Dealer editor-in-chief James Baggott, who said it stood out from the crowd. ‘The specialist car dealerships out there have to know their products inside out and the team behind SuperMini certainly do,’ he commented. ‘The team aced our mystery shopping with the impeccable knowledge of Minis and they have superb feedback online. ‘They were the standout winner in our Specialist Used Car Dealership category and should be very proud of their achievement!’ We weren’t the only ones to be impressed by the dealership either, as its website is awash with five-star reviews from customers. Among the glowing comments is praise for the Alfreton Road dealership staff for their customer service skills and for the smooth car-buying process.

T
he Days To Turn Award recognises the dealership that’s able to sell its cars quicker than any of its rivals, and at the Used Car Awards 2021 the crown was taken by CarShop Express Leicester. In order to find out who should claim top honours, we teamed up with our friends at Auto Trader to find the dealers who keep their stock sitting on the forecourt for the least amount of time. The Auto Trader data team looked at nearly 13,500 dealers to help us identify the best – with those dealers then subjected to the same mystery shopping as all other shortlisted firms in this year’s awards. Our judges were impressed with CarShop Leicester’s excellent stock turn rate as well as the brilliant customer service provided by staff. The impressive performance earned the dealership this year’s title, despite the Express Store only opening in March. The award formed part of a wider celebration for CarShop, with parent company Sytner also winning our coveted Dealership Group of the Year title. Jon Easton, operations director at CarShop, said: ‘It’s a fantastic achievement, so a big shout out to the team in Leicester. ‘We opened the store in March, so it’s fantastic. Express Store is a concept store really, and we pull cars from our whole network. ‘The consumers’ needs have changed since 2020 – they’re looking more online and they want to be able to access, buy and take delivery on their terms.’ Among those to be impressed was Car Dealer editor-in-chief James Baggott. He said: ‘Sytner are one of the most successful car dealer groups and understandably so! They were the clear winners in our coveted Dealer Group of the Year category. ‘The company’s CarShop Express store in Leicester also secured the inaugural Days To Turn Award, which celebrated those dealers that managed to shift their stock at record pace. t was a great night for Marshall Truck & Van (Fareham) at the Car Dealer Used Car Awards 2021 as it picked up the Used Commercial Vehicle Dealer of the Year gong. In this category our judges were looking for a professional service, backed up by a great website and excellent reviews. And the team at Marshall Truck & Van (Fareham) certainly filled that criteria as they celebrated a stellar year. Our mystery shoppers were also impressed by the dealership’s speedy response time and professional service. The site specialises in Mercedes vans and is one of the most trusted and respected in the south of England. The award came at a critical time for Marshall as a proposed £325m takeover by BCA and Cinch owner Constellation edged nearer. Reacting to the win, Wayne Edwards, Marshall head of Mercedes Truck and Van, said: ‘We’re absolutely delighted for a brilliant team. ‘It’s all about the team and we’re lucky to lead them. We’re predominantly a MercedesBenz used dealership based in the south of England. ‘We’re new to the van side and we try to learn from the car-selling side when retailing them. ‘The pandemic has raised the profile of commercial vehicles, and if there’s anything good to come out of this tragedy it’s that it’s raised the profile of commercial vehicles.’ The Hampshire-based outfit beat strong competition from the highly commended pair of JL Vans and Norwich Van Centre. The achievement also drew praise from Car Dealer editor-in-chief James Baggott, who said: ‘Selling commercial vehicles is a specialism that doesn’t suit everyone – but get it right and it can be very lucrative. ‘Our judges were looking for a professional service, backed up by a great website and excellent reviews. Marshall Truck & Van (Fareham) offered a super-quick response time, which was backed up by a great website and a professional service.’

udi clinched the Manufacturer Used Car Scheme of the Year gong at the glittering 2021 Car Dealer Used Car Awards. It’s the second time in succession the German premium carmaker has claimed the accolade, and it again pushed Volkswagen and Volvo into the highly commended places with their Approved Used Cars and Select schemes respectively. For this award, sponsored by ALD Carmarket, the Used Car Award judges were looking for the car manufacturer that places an emphasis on its used car offering, and not only helps customers but also backs up its dealers. It’s a tough award to win, as it recognises the carmaker that not just focuses on new vehicles but also has a keen eye on helping dealers with their profitability when it comes to used vehicles. Judges wanted to see the car manufacturer scheme wowing on a number of key criteria, including decent warranty provision, breakdown cover, a comprehensive check of the used cars before sale and a website that was easy to navigate. Audi Approved Used topped the scores with its impressive scheme, which gives customers peace of mind and offers stellar support to dealers. Our judges also took special note of Audi’s dedicated Approved Used website, commenting that it’s ‘easy to use’ and works ‘smoothly’. Collecting the trophy, Audi’s national used car manager, Michael Otton, said: ‘We are over the moon with this award. ‘It’s come as a bit of a surprise with the year that we’ve all had, but it’s a nice one following so much uncertainty.’ Otton concluded: ‘This success really comes down to our dealers. This award goes to our retailers, because without them we wouldn’t be able to bring our approved scheme to life.’ It’s the second successive time Audi has taken home the Manufacturer Used Car Scheme of the Year award. Taking the highly commended slots last year were also Volkswagen and Volvo, proving just how hard it is to bag the top gong in this category.

e all know how hard it is starting a business – but doing so amidst the throes of a pandemic could never be described as an easy ride! However, our winners for 2021 – Car Brothers – who struck out on their own this year can be sure that if they’ve made a success of it now, they’ve got a bright future to look forward to! Our judges were looking for decent reviews online – but were mindful that these businesses had just started out. More important was a good mystery shopping result. Car Brothers, owned by siblings Ross and Colin McNab, is based in Newtownabbey, County Antrim, and is run by a team who have the motor trade coursing through their veins and who aced our mystery shopping test, offering a high-quality, professional service. Car Dealer editor-in-chief James Baggott said on the night: ‘For a dealership that has started in one of the most challenging periods, Car Brothers has done an incredible job in winning this award. ‘It’s always an extremely competitive category but they wowed the judges. ‘While lockdowns have been tough for dealers everywhere, Northern Irish dealers have really been pushed to their limits, so congratulations to Car Brothers.’ The award was presented to the McNab brothers by Greg Tucker, head of OEM & dealer management at category sponsor 1Link Trade Buyer. Colin McNab said: ‘We’re very pleased. We were surprised, to be honest. ‘There was so much competition, we didn’t think we’d get so far, let alone win an award. ‘We launched in November but that was lockdown time, so realistically it was March. We’ve had a great start and we’re so glad to be here.’ The brothers both started in the automotive industry as sales executives 15 years ago. Ross became general manager of four large used car sites in Co Antrim and Co Down. Colin, meanwhile, also became a general manager, responsible for three Renault/Dacia showrooms across Co Antrim and Co Down, as well as a Jeep franchise. It’s little wonder, then, that they’ve made such a success of their own business in such a short space of time!

hen it comes to competition it doesn’t get much feistier than in the car supermarket world. Where cars are piled high and sold at pace, keeping standards tip-top and all the customers happy is never easy. It was incredibly close at the top of this category, showing just how competitive it is at the peak of the car supermarket game. But our winner is a force to be reckoned with in this field, offering customers a premium service and winning rave reviews. Scooping the title was Big Motoring World, after our mystery shoppers were so impressed with the dealerships’ set-up as well as the staff’s excellent customer service skills. Car Dealer editor-in-chief James Baggott said: ‘Big Motoring World are always striving to be the best and this year they’ve made huge changes that will take them to the next level. ‘Our mystery shoppers were impressed with the speed they were dealt with and how easy the sales team made it to buy a car. ‘Used Car Supermarket of the Year is one of our top accolades and the whole Big team should be extremely proud of the achievement.’ The category was sponsored by Autoguard Warranties, and after receiving the trophy from commercial director Ali May-Khalil, Big Motoring World chief operating officer Anton Khan said: ‘I’m very pleased and I’m sure the team will be thrilled when they hear. The secret to our success has to be how quickly we can get the cars to market. ‘All I can say is Big is getting bigger. The last 12 months have really moved things forward with online and we’ve just tried to build on that.’ Khan became chief operating officer when earlier this year Big Motoring World snapped up SW Car Supermarket, which he founded. He will ultimately take over from Peter Waddell as chief executive, as Waddell plans to step back from the business – which he says has been valued at £200m – and assume a chairman role. In 2020, Big Motoring World made an £11m profit, according to preliminary figures. Despite lockdowns and Covid restrictions, the dealer group managed to turn over £295m and sell 22,000 used cars.

USED CAR DEALERSHIP OF THE YEAR: UP TO 50 CARS Category sponsored by Black Horse Presented by Tim Smith, head of motor finance

T
aking home the trophy for Up To 50 Cars for the second time was Prestige Diesels and Sports, based in Portsmouth and run by Alexis Cassey and Scott Shilcock. Awards host Mike Brewer said: ‘This award is one of my favourites because it recognises those dealers that might not get their chance to shine anywhere else. ‘The Used Car Awards have always been about letting the whole industry get some recognition and this category sums that up! ‘What was clear from the mystery shopping in this category is how much the owners of all the shortlisted businesses care about their customers. ‘They really do offer a personal service and, as a result, excel. ‘Our winner is no stranger to this room or these awards. Run by two people who care passionately about their business and customers, it was clear at every touch point with the dealership that these two love the motor trade.’ Car Dealer editor-in-chief James Baggott said: ‘It’s very unusual for a dealership to receive one of our Used Car Dealership of the Year awards twice, so it’s huge congratulations to Prestige Diesels for picking up the Up To 50 Cars gong again. ‘The level of detail they go into with every car is really impressive and our mystery shoppers were blown away with the care they took when selling the car. Well done again to Scott and Alexis for a well-deserved win.’ After collecting the award from Tim Smith, the head of motor finance at headline sponsor Black Horse, Shilcock said: ‘We won this award back in 2014, so tonight we were not expecting to win again. ‘I think this one means more, because it’s a tough category and we really didn’t think we’d win again.’ Cassey added: ‘I’m just so proud for little old us. ‘To be honest, I have to put everything on Scott, who worked really hard while I looked after our daughter this year. ‘He works so hard, and is honest with the customers.’

s the stock numbers increase, so too does the potential for things to go wrong! Juggling good customer service and quality stock is no mean feat, especially when you’re turning over more cars, often with a small team to do all the work. Our judges were looking for both a quality digital offering as well as a great personal service when they called. Our winner, though, seriously impressed our mystery shopping team and judges with a great service throughout the process. It also scooped the trophy for Used Car Customer Care. Car Dealer editor-in-chief James Baggott said: ‘Acklam Car Centre can be incredibly proud of their achievements at the Used Car Awards. They seriously impressed our judges and aced the mystery shopping. They were nominated in three categories and won two! ‘It’s no mean feat winning one Used Car Award, let alone two. What a year for the Acklam team!’ After collecting the award from Tim Smith, the head of motor finance at headline sponsor Black Horse, Acklam Car Centre managing director Chris Andrews said: ‘Winning the 51-100 car category was particularly special. ‘It’s a credit to every member of staff. Everyone puts the work in and devotes a lot of effort to the company. ‘All their effort and hard work has paid off – superb!’ Asked what the secret of its success was, he said: ‘It’s a combination of a lot of things. We have some great customers and we do a really good job online. ‘When we get up tomorrow morning, we’ll look to go for this award next year as well.’ The Middlesbrough-based dealership began life in 2001 and since then has sold some 30,000 cars not only across the UK but abroad as well. It attributes its success not just to itself and its team, but also to its customers and their loyalty. his award aims to celebrate the best of the larger used car dealerships. As stock increases further, used car dealer bosses face conflicting pressures on their time, but our judges wanted to see dealerships that continued to focus on the customers’ needs. In this category, our mystery shoppers were looking for all the hallmarks of a quality dealership – from good feedback from other customers to a great service when we mystery-shopped. But our winner – Trade Price Cars – really is on top of its game. It enjoys great feedback online and impressed our judges with great service that was professional and helpful throughout. Car Dealer Magazine editor-in-chief James Baggott said: ‘There was a series of successes for Trade Price Cars in this year’s awards. ‘The dealership was nominated in three categories and took honours in all of them. ‘First there was a highly commended in the Used Car Sales Team category, then young Elliott Rosoman won the Future Star category – something he was clearly made up about. ‘And then they topped it off with this win in the Used Car Dealership of the Year category for Over 100 Cars. ‘A big night for a brilliant business. Well done to them all!’ After collecting the trophy from Tim Smith, the head of motor finance at headline sponsor Black Horse, Trade Price Cars owner Dan Kirby said: ‘I’m speechless, absolutely speechless. It’s amazing to win it after such a turbulent year. ‘We’ve had one thing or another and it means so much to the team. We’ve got a big crowd of us here and everyone was really delighted when our name was announced. ‘It’s all down to the people – we’ve got a great team. ‘We don’t say that lightly and a lot of people think the same, but we really have got a fantastic team of people. ‘They all pull together, work as one, are enthusiastic and love coming to work – as much as you can!’

restige car dealership group Sytner was crowned Dealership Group of the Year at the 2021 Car Dealer Used Car Awards. It pipped the other four shortlisted companies to the title, and announcing the winner, awards host Mike Brewer said of the contenders: ‘Now these guys really are the big guns. Battling for honours in this category are mighty plcs and franchised dealer groups – and all spin many plates when it comes to used cars. ‘Getting it right here isn’t easy, but when they do there can be huge rewards. ‘Our judges were looking for signs of greatness across these businesses – from their websites to their standalone used car operations. ‘Our winner, though, is a benchmark for excellence in the automotive industry. ‘From its fantastic used car operation to its superbly run franchised dealership operations, this group puts used cars at its core and reaps the rewards as a result.’ Car Dealer editor-in-chief James Baggott commented: ‘They are one of the most successful car dealer groups and understandably so! ‘Sytner were the clear winners in our coveted Dealership Group of the Year category. ‘Our mystery shoppers were very impressed with their service both online and in person, and their used car set-up is class-leading.’ After receiving the trophy from Tim Smith, the head of motor finance at headline sponsor Black Horse, Sytner group marketing director Leo Nelson said: ‘It’s a very proud moment to collect this award for us tonight. It’s a great accolade. ‘Used cars are a really important part of our DNA within Sytner Group. We make sure that we select the best stock, sell at the right price and use data within our business. ‘Being flexible and really focusing on what dealers want is really important for us.’ Headquartered in Leicester, Sytner Group started life in 1968 as a used car dealership opened by Frank Sytner and Alan, his older brother who was the former owner of the Cavern Club in Liverpool. his category aims to recognise a person or business who has done something truly outstanding in the motoring arena this year. We don’t announce a shortlist for this award – instead, our judges take into account nominations and the citations that accompany them. As the venue waited excitedly to find out who had won this highly prized trophy for 2021, awards host Mike Brewer said: ‘This year’s winner is a huge character in the motor industry. ‘They lead their extremely successful firm from the front with passion and integrity, which shines throughout their business. ‘This year they have led a company that has outperformed the market in many key areas and they put used cars at the centre of their plans. ‘Our winner even managed to seal a huge acquisition deal, all while battling the effects of Covid. ‘He has made a series of bold calls – such as agreeing to pay back furlough cash before his peers – and always puts his staff before anything else.’ Revealing to the assembled crowd that it was none other than Daksh Gupta, Brewer labelled him ‘one of the hardest-working men in the motor trade’, and with the awards coinciding with the news that Constellation Automotive Group was putting in a multimillion-pound bid for Marshall Motor Group, Brewer joked: ‘After today’s news, he is probably a rather busy chap!’ After receiving his trophy from James Vaughan and Ben Mitchell, co-founders of category sponsor Trade To Trade Underwriting, Gupta said: ‘I’m hugely humbled. But I think with all of these awards it’s not about me, it’s about our dealerships and the amazing people we have working there.’ Gupta, who was named Dealers’ Dealer of the Year at our 2020 Used Car Awards, which were held digitally, has been group chief executive of Marshall since 2008. s with the Outstanding Achievement of the Year award, there is no shortlist for this category, just one winner, and there was feverish anticipation at the venue as people waited to find out who would be carrying away the 2021 trophy. In the build-up to announcing that it was Tom Hartley, awards host Mike Brewer said: ‘There are many characters in the motor trade – it’s what most of us love about this industry after all. And our winner is one of the biggest. He’s been in the motor trade all his life, starting out selling cars when he was still a boy. Since then, he’s spawned a family of successful car dealers who have followed in their father’s footsteps. ‘Over the years, he’s sold cars to the rich and famous, diced with car manufacturers and set the market for some of the most exclusive cars on the planet. He’s always grafting, always looking for a deal and is a true car dealer to the core. ‘He’s recently opened a brand-new showroom with his business-partner son and has collected a loyal following on social media channels. Our winner has unquestionably built an empire and his name into a brand, and he’s a worthy recipient of our Lifetime Achievement Award.’ After receiving the trophy from Victor Coutin, managing director of category sponsor GardX, Hartley said it was ‘incredible’, adding: ‘I’ve won some awards in business over the years but this really is the best. ‘Lifetime achievement is the best and it’s given by people who admire your achievements in life. This is the biggest highlight for me. ‘I don’t get many honours but when I do I get the big ones, and this is the biggest for me.’ At the ceremony, Car Dealer editor-in chief James Baggott said: ‘What a life Tom Hartley has lived and we’re delighted to be able to hand over the Lifetime Achievement Award tonight. This is always an incredibly tough category to choose who will win but it’s great to see it go to Tom. ‘He plays a huge part in the industry and is a role model to many – and it’s great to see how much it meant to him, too! Congratulations, Tom, for picking up this top award.’

USED SMALL CAR OF THE YEAR
USED MID-SIZED CAR OF THE YEAR
USED EXECUTIVE CAR OF THE YEAR
THE Ford Fiesta has been a firm favourite for the used car buyer and dealer, and a core part of the motoring scene for 45 years. The latest version is a cracker – it’s a great brand-new car, but thanks to its sheer popularity and large model range, it makes an even better used car. More than that, the Fiesta offers so much for so little, and a multitude of models ensures there’s a Fiesta for everyone. It’s a true people’s car.
THIS class used to be dominated by some well-loved family favourites, but Kia has really disrupted the mid-sized category. The Ceed has been a very impressive midsized hatchback since it arrived in 2006. The most recent version has only added to this and is quietly reserved and hugely competent. Used car dealers love them, while for buyers, Kia’s outstanding sevenyear warranty seals the deal.
THE V60 has benefited from a brand that has enjoyed something of a resurgence in recent years. Volvo has moved away from safe and secure to classy and posh, becoming a real premium player. The current V60 model offers a huge amount to used buyers, with class-leading space, a huge boot and beautiful materials in the cabin. Not only that, but it looks stylish, too.

USED SPORTS CAR OF THE YEAR
USED SUV OF THE YEAR
USED AFV OF THE YEAR
2021 might have been a year of crazy used car prices but we were looking for a used sports car that truly deserved its sticker price. The Porsche 718 Cayman is just that and offers huge value for money, while the wide model range means there’s a 718 Cayman for everyone. Even the entry-level car is an outstanding buy.
WITH most SUVs these days following a similar format, the Suzuki Jimny is refreshingly different. It hails from an increasingly old-fashioned era where offroad credentials were prioritised over onroad driving manners, making it special. It’s been such a success for dealers, too, that many used models are changing hands for huge premiums over new models!
HYBRID and electric cars are growing increasingly popular in the used car market – especially after the recent fuel crisis. The Model 3 has been dominating the new car arena and interest in used models has surged as a result. It has arguably done the most to switch buyers to EVs and has desirability in measures other carmakers dream about.

O
ur Used Car of the Year has to be a model that has risen to the top of the pile in the sector, and 2021’s winner certainly did that. The Suzuki Jimny has become the star of what will be remembered as a crazy year for used cars. Dealers are regularly telling us that they are selling used Jimnys at huge premiums over new models, and Suzuki has cleverly made the car fashionable to younger buyers while not putting off traditional Jimny owners either. Awards host and judge Mike Brewer said: ‘The judges and I absolutely love this car – and the reason for our affection is simple. ‘In a time when everything looks and feels very similar, this car stands out as honest and unafraid to be a proper, old-fashioned 4x4. The latest model has been an amazing hit for its dealers. And it makes dealers and buyers smile – that alone makes it special.’

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Bristol Audi as popular giant bow makes return BRISTOL Audi has revived a Christmas tradition it’s been carrying out nearly every year since it moved to Cribbs Causeway in 2011. And this year its Bristol Audi bow went up a little early to spread some extra cheer. Head of business Steve Smith said: ‘One year, we did a car-in-a-box-present on the forecourt. Last year, under the circumstances of the pandemic, we didn’t do anything other than a tree. The feedback I got was overwhelming on both occasions from people saying they know Christmas is coming when the bow is up.’

The What Car? research has named and shamed the worst car makers after analysing the results of 27 brands and 139 models. The data took into account cars aged between six and 15 years and found three French firms – Citroen, Peugeot and Renault – filled the spaces behind Land Rover.

BCA and Cinch owner Constellation Automotive Group says it will carry out an extensive review of Marshall Motor Group after the acquisition. In documents published on its website on December 14, the buyer laid out its plans for Marshall following the £325m purchase. The documents also ‘some restructuring’ may be required, especially in relation to the firm’s listed status. Constellation is looking to take it off the stock market and make it a private enterprise.

Franchised dealers Anger as EV grants are trusted the most are cut once again
FRANCHISED car dealers are the most trusted by car buyers according to an exclusive new survey – while online used car sellers are being treated with extreme caution. What Car? research conducted for Car Dealer Magazine polled 5,000 consumers on their trust levels when it comes to the motor trade. Some 63 per cent of respondents said they thought franchised dealers were the most trustworthy, with just five per cent saying they trusted online used car dealers the most.

MG smashes record in bumper year
MG is celebrating after a bumper year saw the firm smash its own sales record. The brand saw registrations top 30,000 cars for the first time this year, compared with the 18,415 vehicles that it sold in 2020. Much of it has been attributed to the introduction of the updated MG ZS, which made the top 10 of best sellers in November – the first time one of the firm’s vehicles has entered the chart. (See page 90)
SUBSIDY
THE government has again slashed plug-in car and van grants. It means new EV buyers can now only save £1,500 on cars costing less than £32,000 and £2,500£5,000 on vans. The changes have been criticised by dealers. One who wished to remain anonymous told Car Dealer: ‘Can they make this any harder for us? It’s absolutely shocking they’ve done this. Electric car sales are up but this is a kick in the teeth.’ Only around 20 cars are now eligible.

LEXUS
LC coupe and convertible receive updates to give better experience LEXUS has announced a series of updates that should enhance the driving experience of its stunning LC coupe and convertible. On the coupe model, the front and rear suspension settings have been tuned to give the driver a better sense of connection with the road, as well as a more linear steering response and improved feedback through the wheel. For the coupe and convertible, the drive modes have been modified to make them more distinct from each other. On top of this, body movement has been reduced to give an improved sense of cornering ability. The gearbox has also been updated with a shift-lock mechanism that can help prevent accidental mis-shifts, while a ‘deep hung’ construction for the cushion and seat backs should make the LC more comfortable.
KIA has revealed the prices for its new Sportage SUV, which arrives next year. The model features the widest range of powertrains offered by the company, with hybrid, petrol plus diesel versions all available at launch, and a plug-in hybrid later. Prices start at £26,745 for the petrol version, £27,745 for the diesel, £33,245 for the hybrid and £38,395 for the plug-in hybrid. A ROUND-UP OF WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING ACROSS THE COUNTRY ASTON BARCLAY
Hybrid tops desirability index once again
THE Toyota Prius has been named November’s most desirable car by auction group Aston Barclay – the second time in a row that a hybrid has taken the crown. Its desirability index found the Prius was the most in-demand model, beating stiff competition from the Volvo XC40, which came second, and the Audi Q7, which was third. In fourth place was the Mercedes GLE, and the Jaguar XJ was fifth. The Hyundai Ioniq topped October’s list.
SMMT
Guidance on autonomous cars adverts is out RULES setting out how autonomous vehicles can be advertised by dealers and manufacturers have been published by the SMMT. The trade body said it hoped the new guidance would ensure people received consistent and clear information about self-driving features ahead of their expected introduction to British roads in 2022. The guidelines were developed and agreed by the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles’ AV-DRiVE Group.
RIGHTCHARGE
£700,000 raised in seed funding round
CHARGERS and tariffs comparison site Rightcharge has raised £700,000 in a seed funding round. It said the investment would help accelerate the adoption of smart EV charging in the UK. Among those ploughing cash into the company are angel investors Carwow founder James Hind, Zeus Capital research head Mike Allen, Influence emobility co-founder Stuart Dyble, plus ex-uSwitch commercial director Julia Stent.

Boss tells of fears over EV mechanics shortfall
Distance proves block to buying used cars
THE boss of Halfords has urged the government to address a shortage of specialist mechanics able to cope with the future number of EVs. Chief executive Graham Stapleton said he was ‘very concerned’ that sufficient steps weren’t being taken to address the skills gap. Just 35,000 trained technicians will be available for an estimated 11m EVs by 2030 but twice as many will be needed when the ban on sales of new ICE vehicles comes in, he said.
HAVING to travel too far to see a vehicle is the top barrier to buying a used car. That’s according to latest research for the RAC Dealer Network, which found that 46 per cent of 1,164 people polled gave distance as their main barrier when asked which factors might stop them from buying a car. Second was a lack of detail in the description (44 per cent), followed by an absence of someone to speak to easily (43 per cent). CarDealerMag.co.uk | 73

Financing luxury cars is more than just a job – it’s a passion Darren Selig, founder and chief commercial officer of high-end vehicle finance lender JBR Capital, chooses his personal highlights from a remarkable year and reflects on the importance of getting out into the supercar community and meeting clients
A
ccording to the Chinese calendar, 2021 is the Year of the Ox. But if we denoted years by cars, not animals, what car would you say best suits 2021? I reckon it was the Year of the Ferrari F40. As a child of the ’80s, I’ve always had a soft spot for the 478bhp Pininfarina-designed supercar unveiled in 1987 to celebrate the Cavallino Rampante’s 40th anniversary. But the lag from the 2.9-litre engine’s twin turbochargers is, of course, notorious. You press the accelerator and there’s nothing, nothing, nothing. And then bang! For us at JBR Capital, 2021 felt precisely like that. With restrictions beginning to ease on car buying, we hit the metaphoric throttle pedal hard from the start of March. There was a wait… then the world just exploded. And it hasn’t let up. I’ve written about the business aspect in my previous column, but for everyone at JBR Capital, it truly isn’t just about the finance side of things. We started the company because, like our clients, we all love cars. We could lend on yachts. We could lend on aircraft. We could probably even lend on works of art. But we don’t. Why not? Because, like our customers, we’re passionate about cars. And we know cars. We firmly believe that, as an asset, we understand them better than anyone else in the finance market. But we’d be the first to admit there is always more to learn. And that’s why it’s so essential for us to get out there in the supercar, luxury and high-performance car community and meet our clients. And it’s why it was such a buzz to be able to do that from spring onwards this year. Speaking to our clients and getting to see the cars in the metal we have helped fund is a privilege. That’s why our relationship with Supercar Driver (SCD) is so meaningful and why we were delighted to sign a new agreement extending the partnership for another three years. SCD’s events provide a conduit for us to liaise with many of our clients in a single day. My highlight was the SCD Michelin Secret Meet at Donington in August, where we were greeted with an almost endless sea of machinery, each boasting stunning looks and nigh on 400bhp. And that was just the car park. We look forward to meeting more people out on the road in 2022. As this year draws to a close, I’d like to thank all our clients who have taken out financial agreements with JBR Capital. I’d like to express my gratitude as well to all our introducers for a great 2021. I’d also like to thank our partners at SCD. I certainly enjoyed their final event of the season at Supersonic Sunday in the Concorde hangar at Manchester airport, where guest speakers included Ben Collins. Regaling SCD members with tales of the Ferrari F40, the former BBC Top Gear Stig said: ‘The Ferrari F40 is the most primitive car I have ever driven. The turbo lag is phenomenal but I love it.’ My sentiments exactly.

BMW M240i Under the bonnet
The Bimmer boasts an in-line six-cylinder that pumps out 369bhp and 500Nm of torque.
THE KNOWLEDGE BMW M240i xDrive Price: £45,795 Engine: 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol Power: 369bhp Torque: 500Nm Max speed: 155mph O-60mph: 4.1 seconds MPG (combined): 32.1-34.8 Emissions: 185-200g/km CO2
The old BMW M240i was great fun to drive but without the running costs and compromise of an M2. Is the new one just as good? Darren Cassey finds out. WHAT IS IT? It’s not often that a car comes along without too many direct rivals, but the BMW 2 Series is one such vehicle. It’s become an essential part of the BMW line-up, offering driving enthusiasts a small, stylish coupe that’s great to drive, and a new model has come along. WHAT’S NEW? There’s been a pretty comprehensive redesign on the outside. It’s not just aesthetic either, with improved aerodynamics reducing lift by 50 per cent. It’s also a good chunk bigger than its predecessor, with an updated interior that has more kit. There are also mechanical upgrades that make this more fun to drive, such as the M Sport differential as standard. WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET? The entry-level 220i M Sport model comes with a 181bhp petrol engine that powers the rear wheels, providing a 0-60mph time of 7.3 seconds. It returns up to 44.1mpg, with CO2 emissions of up to 149g/km. The M240i we’re testing today, though, has an in-line sixcylinder engine that makes 369bhp, feeding all four wheels through a rear-biased system. WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE? The engine has an impressively aggressive tone and fantastic pace. The steering is light and fairly uncommunicative, but there’s plenty of grip to be found with a keen turn-in. Once you get confidence in its abilities, it’s easy to carry impressive speed along a curvy B-road, despite the fact that it’s also capable of being a comfortable car for daily driving duties. HOW DOES IT LOOK? BMW has been ruffling a few feathers with its styling in recent years. While I don’t get the hate the 4 Series front grille has been subjected to, I must say the new 2 Series’ rear end is what you’d politely call ‘challenging’. There are some appealing creases in the metalwork but the lights are pulled too far to the edges, giving it awkward proportions. It’s a shame, because the front looks great, particularly in M240i form with its wide, narrow grille, large triangular air intakes and circular headlights designed in homage to the classic 2002 model. WHAT’S IT LIKE INSIDE? There can be few complaints here. The driving position is excellent, sitting fairly low but
76 | CarDealerMag.co.uk
still giving a good view of the road ahead, while everything you touch is intuitively placed and trimmed in soft-touch materials. The backlit door panel trim is a bit of a gimmick but a nicely executed touch, while the standard sports seats are comfortable yet cosseting. There’s an 8.8-inch touchscreen display that’s decent enough to use but feels slightly dated compared with the latest system on the firm’s newest cars, while a digital instrument cluster is also included. Unsurprisingly for such a compact car, rear legroom and headroom isn’t great, so don’t expect taller passengers to be happy on longer road trips. However, the boot is actually 20 litres larger than its predecessor, now at 390 litres. WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE? Prices start at £34,980 for 220i M Sport models and include LED headlights and rear lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, BMW Live Cockpit infotainment system, sports seats, leather steering wheel and automatic air conditioning. The M240i starts at £45,795 and brings a sporty look, mechanical upgrades for improved performance and larger 19-inch alloy wheels. There’s also an M240i Pro Pack for £1,700 that adds features such as black exterior trim, a Harman Kardon sound system and black alloy wheels. WHAT DO THE PRESS THINK? Top Gear said it was a ‘very finessed thing to drive’, while Autocar said it’s ‘clear it has been made by enthusiasts for enthusiasts’. WHAT DO WE THINK? From behind the wheel, BMW has another hit on its hands with the M240i. The fact it’s not even a full M car but can get to 60mph in about four seconds is hugely impressive, while the all-wheel-drive system provides a decent level of security and agility that will make even winter runs fun. We’ve yet to test the lesser-powered model but would be surprised if the impressive levels of refinement don’t translate well. While it’s not ideal for those who carry passengers, if you’re looking for something fun and fairly practical without extortionate running costs, the M240i makes a compelling case for itself. Whether buyers can look past the rear end styling, though, remains to be seen…
TARGET BUYERS:
Those looking for an approachable sports car that’s still comfortable for daily driving duties.
THE RIVALS:
Porsche 718 Cayman Ford Mustang Audi TTS
KEY SELLING POINTS: 1. All-wheel drive 2. High-quality interior 3. Impressively quick
DEAL CLINCHER:
It has the perfect proportions and just enough performance for a sports car on narrow British roads.
Looks The front of the car is great but it’s at the back where things are a little more ‘challenging’.
Inside
The M240i’s driving position is spot on, while the standard sports seats are comfortable yet cosseting.
The fact it’s not even a full M car but can get to 60mph in about four seconds is hugely impressive. CarDealerMag.co.uk | 77

ASTON BARCLAY USED CAR INDEX REINFORCES TESLA AS ONE OF THE UK’S MOST DESIRABLE EV BRANDS The Tesla Model 3 continues to be one of the country’s most popular EV car brands according to Aston Barclay’s December used car desirability index. It topped the Aston Barclay index as its most in-demand used car by some margin and was November’s third best-selling new car according to SMMT data. “The Tesla 3 has featured in our monthly index throughout 2021 as many drivers aspire to the brand once they have decided to move from an ICE to an EV. The result is a huge number of bids every time a used Tesla 3 arrives at auction which keeps prices very high,” explained Martin Potter, Aston Barclay’s MD – Customer. “One of the key gauges of a new car brand’s market acceptance is how well it performs in the used market.” It is just one of two EVs on the December list – the other is the Nissan Leaf alongside two hybrids, the Toyota Prius and the Lexus CT reflecting the continued growing interest in low, or zero emission used cars.
However, it’s the seven premium SUVs on the list led by the MercedesBenz GLE in second place which reinforces where the biggest demand remains as new car supplies remain compromised by the global semiconductor supply challenge. Consumers who are prepared to invest between £30,000 and £100,000 in an SUV are being forced into the used market with wholesale buyers often paying close to or higher than retail prices at auction when locating cars for customers. At the opposite end of the market the Ford Puma, Dacia Duster and MINI Clubman were placed in fourth, 18th and 19th in the December index reinforcing the shortage of stock at both ends of the used market. Aston Barclay’s monthly index takes into consideration three key metrics: web views prior to sale, number of physical and online bids per sale, and the sale price achieved as a percentage of CAP average.

Autoglym Polar Blaster
£35.99
KNOW someone keen on car detailing or fancy a go yourself? A good-quality snowfoam is a good place to start and is seen by many professional detailers as a great way to properly clean a car. It coats a vehicle with a thick ‘foam’ and helps to act as a pre-wash, making the whole process of cleaning the car a bit easier. Autoglym is one of the best in the business for cleaning products, but you’re not paying a premium for this Polar Blaster.
Diptyque Air Freshener
£29
£70
GOT a friend or relative who is forever losing their keys? In that case, the Apple Airtag could be the ideal present for them. It can be attached to all manner of things – from car and house keys to laptops and even bags – and will relay where it is via the Find My app installed on all iPhones. You can even get them engraved, which is perfect if you’re trying to add a more personal touch to this gift.
IT’S easy to opt for a low-cost air freshener, but if you’re looking to add a stylish scent to your – or someone else’s – car, then this classy diffuser from Diptyque will no doubt hit the mark. Available with a variety of scents, including rose and blackcurrant, it will transform the smell of the interior of the car. amp, smoke, food debris… All three of these can have a negative effect on the smell of a car’s interior, which can prove a major challenge at resale. The most effective cure is a deep clean, using Autoglym Professional’s Super Cleaner Sanitiser and Interior Cleaner. But for cars that don’t justify the time and investment involved in a full valet, Autoglym has launched a new trade-focused Spearmint Fogger. The atomised spearmint fragrance is crisp and clean, as well as long-lasting, meaning it effectively hides any unpleasant whiffs. The Royal Warranted car-care expert’s new Fogger requires just 10 minutes to work, helping to mask nasty smells behind a pleasant minty freshness, thanks to its simple ‘one-shot’ operation – simply press the trigger and leave it to discharge, allowing the fresh new smell to permeate the car’s fabrics. Its minty fragrance was chosen by the brand’s car-care experts to not be overwhelming, following feedback from users that other branded products on the market had smells that were overpowering in themselves. Paul Caller, CEO of Autoglym, said: ‘Our trade customers have told us that bad smells are one of the main things that put people off buying second-hand cars, which is backed up by research from the remarketing industry*. Our Professional customers will really value this product, which potentially adds hundreds to a car’s value.’ The new Spearmint Fogger is available to include contact-free home delivery either directly or through Autoglym’s franchise network.

How much of your day do you spend doing this? How much time do you spend taking inquiries from people who are asking everything in the advert, including finance quotes they could do themselves on your website? Basically, the ones you just read the advert back to. Rory RSC Yep, had that a fair bit recently. After a really busy year for me this is my first real wave of being quiet and getting lots of silly inquiries – reminds me of the old days! SouthernTrader Non-buyers aren’t they? This was the glitzy setting at The Brewery in London for our 2021 Used Car Awards. A lot more people wanting to call in and just turn up vs the Covid situation of appointment viewing. Noticing a rise in that. Rory RSC We’ve had… Can I look as I don’t know what I want yet? Not Sunday at 8.30am you can’t – NO. Can you bring the car to Surrey so I can look? 200 miles away… er NO.
Can we test all the Golfs you have in stock? WHY? The amount of questions they’ve asked that are on adverts has certainly increased, to which I answer, ‘Shall I read the advert to you?’ Oh, is it on the advert? Sorry. Then the PX prices are driving me mad. The latest fools think we are going to give retail and above for their cast-off PX. Explaining we earn profits to idiots is getting boring. Guy with a 100k T6 van with a badly fitted rear seat in it that wasn’t pull-tested and only strapped to the floor with self-tapping screws wanted £23,000 as a day van. PRICES
Going down – but tread carefully It might just be me but is anybody getting the impression that prices have slightly flattened in the past week or two? I’m not saying anything’s dropping – we all know the situation is still quite dire regarding new car supply – but I’m definitely noticing quite a few cars not reaching reserve, not making CAP Clean, etc, that would have done a month ago. Maybe seasonality is playing its part, as well as the fact that CAP Clean is a very inflated figure after the past few months. Might just be wishful thinking as I sit here looking at my forecourt stock in single figures. CRW Yes, on the t**ds I attempt to polish up I managed to buy a few at the block last week. I need to tread carefully though as most of the sub-£5K cars seem to have been traded in for a reason. That reason is they’re usually ruined beyond all redemption. That’s the game though, isn’t it? Mind you, it’s not all rosy. On Dealer Auction (which is eye-watering) last week, I
was either outbid by £2,000 or if I’m a high bidder the vendor has a reserve at retail or above.
We’ve teamed up with Car Sales Memes to bring you a few of their funniest captions and slogans each month. Enjoy! BHM
It seems nowadays just about every punter I speak to has a tale of a neighbour or relative selling a car back into the trade, or to WBAC, for the same or more than they paid six to 12 months ago. The downside with current pricing is folk at the lower end can’t afford what they want and only come shopping when they’re desperate. At least they’re not surprised to be usually told there’s no movement on price. BHM I still seem to get the ones that ask, though! Also the ones who haven’t heard of a semiconductor and simply give a wry ‘You’re bull*****ing’ smile, as if carrying 25 per cent of my normal stock level is a move that I really wanted to make. CRW
More provisionals are coming to auction now I have noticed there are a lot more provisionals at the auctions. We mainly use Manheim. The prices seem to be easing off a bit – about time. Bought a couple this week at OK money. They still seem high, but compared to the current prices it’s not bad. Anyone else noticed the same? Nevillec
Surely it can’t get much worse. From what I can tell, despite the prices half of the lots are half-broken anyway. I don’t think I’ve dipped my hand into my pocket for repairs as much as I have in the past four months. The only saving grace is at least we can now add it on at the other end. BHM
Yep, I surprised myself by winning a couple last week. It’s gone quiet, though. Anglo9
Agreed. I’ve bought a few more recently from BCA. Still top money, but sold quickly for a few quid more than normal margin. Public seem to realise they need to pay more. December started well compared with previous Decembers but quieter this week as per normal in the run-up to Christmas. RH Trading

TSB to close 70 bank branches in 2022
TSB plans to close 70 bank branches across the UK next year as customers switch to online banking. The business said it would have 220 branches left at the end of June 2022, compared with 290 today. It will still have the country’s seventh largest branch network. TSB said it’ll mean 150 fewer roles but all staff affected will be offered alternative roles at the bank.
Average price tag set to rise by five per cent THE average price tag on a home across Britain is predicted by a property website to increase by five per cent next year. The most competitive housing markets currently are in Scotland, the West Midlands, the south-west, Yorkshire and the Humber, Rightmove said. It predicts these areas are likely to see asking price growth at a higher rate of upwards of seven per cent next year. By contrast, asking prices in London are expected to increase by around three per cent. Rightmove said its price forecast takes supply, demand and pricing data into account. A stamp duty holiday that recently ended prompted a rush of buyer activity in 2021.

The share prices went through the roof again when [Elon Musk] announced it but they don’t come back down.’ This followed the news that Tesla and Hertz hadn’t signed an agreement when Musk tweeted about this, and its value dropped again below £1tn. ‘This story has raised the share price and guess what, it’s not coming back down again. It sort of stays up where it is.’ 86 | CarDealerMag.co.uk
CAP HPI
No need to panic over drop in used car values USED car values fell in November for the first time in 10 months – but there’s no need to panic. That’s the view from Cap HPI. In an exclusive interview with Car Dealer, the firm’s head of valuations, Derren Martin, said used car values fell by 1.2 per cent in November – their first drop since February. However, with values rising 1.2 per cent in October, November’s decline shows the market has plateaued and not crashed after nearly a year of value gains. Martin said: ‘The headline for November – and which goes towards our December monthly values – is a 1.2 per cent drop, which is equivalent to a £230 fall on average. ‘It’s the first drop that we’ve seen in our Live values since February.’ He added: ‘That’s one way of looking at it, though – the other way is it’s not a massive movement down. ‘It’s the second-most positive movement we’ve made going into a December since we introduced Live values in 2012. Some normal seasonality is what we’re calling it.’ The fall in November is against a backdrop of values rising by a whopping 30 per cent during 2021.
LUSCOMBE MOTORS
New car problem will worsen before it improves THE demand for used cars isn’t going away anytime soon, said Robin Luscombe, adding that dealers shouldn’t worry about falling prices. He said: ‘We’re getting a lot of inquiries but everyone wants the car today or tomorrow. ‘I think there are a lot of people searching around everywhere and inquiring to lots of dealers. ‘They all need a response, but inevitably a lot of them aren’t going anywhere because they’re just fishing to see if they can find a car. So it takes up a lot of time.’
The ongoing new car shortage is why Luscombe isn’t worried. ‘I’m not panicking,’ he said. ‘In January, used cars always become good news. ‘They always slow up in November and December, and then we’re always very busy in January. ‘From the day after Boxing Day it’s always busy with used cars. There’s no point distressing now because I feel in January the prices will go back up again. The new car problem is going to get worse before it gets better.’

When will the market settle down? It’d take a brave person to predict that! CUSTOMERS are likely to become less impulsive and more thoughtful when it comes to buying cars, according to Black Horse head of motor finance Tim Smith. He believes that some of the trends that powered the used car sector during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic have subsided, while others have enforced how important the used car business is. ‘People are able to go on holiday again, so there are now alternative routes for disposal income,’ he told Car Dealer Used Car Awards host Mike Brewer for a special Car Dealer Live. Smith added: ‘With these alternative routes for their disposal income, I think car buyers are now a lot more thoughtful about what they do – less impulsive and more thoughtful. ‘But I do think the demand for used cars will remain strong.’ He described the current state of the used car market as ‘crazy’, with high prices and demand, strong car usage and poor new car supply. ‘We’ve got a couple of big entrants into the market with a really big appetite for buying up stock, and add in record high conversion rates at auction – it’s crazy at the moment.’ As to when he thought the market would settle down, Smith said: ‘I think it would be a brave person to predict it.’ He highlighted the supply issue with new cars because of the chips and raw materials shortages, as well as people having to face interest rate rises, tax increases and general price hikes.
NEIL SMITH
Purchase of Imperial left unfinished business EX-IMPERIAL Cars director talked about the ‘unfinished business’ he felt after the used car supermarket group was bought by Cazoo. Smith was able to share some of his own experience of being bought by Cazoo in the week we saw Cinch owner Constellation make a bid for Marshall. He said: ‘You’re right – it’s come out of nowhere. There was some precursor to this a couple of months ago when the rumours were going around about Constellation buying Motorpoint. ‘That almost came out of
the blue as well, but it had a more sensible ring to it, being a used car operation. ‘I can’t speak for Daksh but you asked me at the beginning how we felt at Imperial. We felt it was unfinished business and I think that’s probably how Daksh feels.’ Imperial Cars was bought by Cazoo in July 2020 and Smith said: ‘At that time it was the perfect storm. We’d been hit by Covid and that started to have a real impact on the business. ‘We’d accelerated the business over 10 years
CARWOW
No discount? No bother as new car sales rise
CARWOW CEO James Hind explained that despite discounts not really being available, customers were still turning to his business to choose where to buy, with new car sales up 60 per cent on the website. He said: ‘It’s quite interesting. The best-selling car we have at the moment has absolutely no discount and it’s been that way for about four or five months. ‘Almost all of the cars in the top 10 have little to no discount. ‘Consumers are still shopping around but they’re shopping around to find a dealer, to find a good delivery time, and they’re prepared to wait.’

We weren’t a cash-rich business though, because we’d put all of the money back into the business, so it was a difficult time going through the first lockdown. ‘We would have been able to come out and probably have had two years of hardship.’ Smith said: ‘I think personally and for a lot of the team it was a great journey, a rollercoaster over those 10 years. Some great times and some challenging times. ‘We would have probably liked to have kept it on for another two or three years to get to our ultimate aim of around 30 sites nationwide.’ CarDealerMag.co.uk | 87

Market dropped in value and volume in October FCA
Firms will have new duty to act in consumers’ interests
F
by John Bowman john@blackballmedia.co.uk
inancial services firms will have a new duty to put consumers at the heart of what they do under plans set out by the City regulator. The Financial Conduct Authority said this will drive a culture change, and senior managers will be held accountable. Businesses will have to provide consumers with information they can understand, offer products and service that are fit for purpose and give helpful customer service. Under the higher standards, consumers should find it as easy to switch, cancel and complain as it was to buy the product or service. The FCA said it had previously seen firms presenting information in a way that exploited consumers’ behavioural biases, selling products or services that weren’t fit for purpose, or providing poor customer support. Its 2020 Financial Lives survey of 16,000 people found only 10 per cent of consumers strongly agreed that they had confidence in the UK financial services industry, with a further 32 per cent slightly agreeing. Just 35 per cent agreed firms were honest and transparent in their dealings with them. The FCA is consulting on the plans until February 15 and expects to confirm any final rules by the end of July 2022. The regulator said it will step in quickly when it identifies practices that don’t deliver for consumers. It said Parliament had also called strongly for a change to the standard of protection for consumers, and its publication met the FCA’s obligations under the Financial Services Act 2021.

LATEST figures from the Finance & Leasing Association show the consumer car finance market reported a fall in new business of only one per cent by value but 11 per cent by volume in October 2021 compared with the same month in 2020. The consumer new car finance market reported a fall in new business of eight per cent by value and 13 per cent by volume in October versus the same month in 2020. The consumer used car finance market reported new business up four per cent by value but 10 per cent lower by volume in October compared with October 2020. Geraldine Kilkelly, director of research and chief economist at the FLA, said: ‘The latest consumer car finance market data reflects the ongoing supply shortages of new and used cars. ‘The car finance market was quick to recover as the economy opened up. However, the pace of recovery has been hampered by supply shortages, which are likely to persist into 2022 as countries across the world contend with new waves and variants of Covid-19.’

he’s electric. She’s in a family full of eccentrics. She’s done things I never expected, and I need more time.’ Lyrics taken from a song sung by Oasis back in 1995. It’s funny to think that just 35 years later, the only new cars you’ll be able to purchase will indeed be… ‘electric’. Usually when a new product comes to market, particularly technologydriven products, there is always an eager early-adopter market, hungry to be one of the first owners of this new technology. As the Oasis song goes, some people sit back and need more time before they decide whether it’s a product that’s right for them and if the product has matured enough to meet their daily needs before purchasing. With the UK government bringing the ban on new petrol and diesel cars forward by five years to 2030, this news should give all of us in the car industry a wake-up call. While there will still be plenty of petrol and diesel cars on the road for many years, with a 25 per cent rise in electric vehicle sales in 2021 alone there are many questions and challenges we must consider so that we can meet our customers’ needs and expectations in this electric future. There will still be plenty of non-EVs on the road for a good number of years, but this number will dwindle over time – and for dealerships that rely on the income from the MOT and servicing aspects of their business, research and training your staff how to service electric vehicles of all types and knowledge of common issues with EV models will be needed to ensure that you can retain those new electric customers and income. Charging ports are something that are becoming more of a common sight in petrol stations and supermarkets but are perhaps not as widely available as they should be, considering the limited range of some EVs. There is, perhaps, some potential in offering on-site charging ports at your dealership, which could in turn drive up your sales of EVs, and this approach could even become part of a customer retention strategy. Imagine your customers pulling up, plugging in, perhaps looking around your stock or stopping for a coffee and a chat while charging their car. 2030 may seem some way off but there is little reason to wait. Start looking at how you can adapt your business to this electric future, ensuring you don’t get left behind – just as the Gallagher brothers sang: ‘There’s lots and lots for us to do. She is electric. Can I be electric too?’ Here at First Response Finance, we financed our first electric vehicle a few years ago, and we have also financed a range of electric motorcycles. Whether you’re ready now or wanting to wait longer, First Response Finance will be here with you every step of the way, so get in touch today.

November’s sales results tell two very different stories
CARS SOLD IN NOVEMBER 2021
by James Batchelor james.batchelor@blackballmedia.co.uk
N
ew car registrations rose by 1.7 per cent in November but were down by more than 31 per cent compared with pre-pandemic levels, latest data shows. Figures published by the SMMT show that 115,706 units were registered versus November 2020, and the Mini was the month’s top seller. The SMMT said that ‘demand is there’ but supply was being crippled by the ongoing global shortage of semiconductors. November’s numbers were up 1.7 per cent on last year, bringing to an end four months of consecutive decline. However, the SMMT stressed that November 2020’s figures were impacted by the second national lockdown. When November 2021 is viewed against the five-year pre-pandemic average, the month was down by 31.3 per cent – a more important comparison figure. Plug-in vehicle demand continued to grow, however, with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) equating to 18.8 per cent of the market at 21,726 units – more than double versus November 2020 – while plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) share grew to 9.3 per cent or 10,796 units. Year to date, 1,538,585 new cars have been registered, of which 17.5 per cent have been BEVs or PHEVs, meaning one in six new cars is capable of being plugged in. When combined with hybrid electric vehicles (nine per cent share), more than a quarter (26.5 per cent) of the new car market during 2021 has been electrified. The SMMT said this growth comes as the UK ratio of plug-in vehicles on the road to standard public chargers (16:1) was one of the worst among the top 10 global electric vehicle markets at the end of 2020. The Mini took the top spot in November’s best-sellers chart with 3,551 units registered, with the Vauxhall Corsa and Tesla Model 3 following closely behind (3,123 and 3,077 units respectively). The Ford Fiesta, meanwhile, didn’t feature in the top 10, and so far in 2021 has slumped to eighth place with 27,000 units registered. The Corsa remains the best-selling car so far this year with 38,306 registrations.

Figures look good but there’s an underlying weakness, says SMMT SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said of the latest figures: ‘What looks like a positive performance belies the underlying weakness of the market. ‘Demand is there, with a slew of new, increasingly electrified, models launched, but the global shortage of semiconductors
continues to bedevil production and therefore new car registrations. ‘The industry is working flat out to overcome these issues and fulfil orders, but disruption is likely to last into next year, compounding the need for customers to place orders early.
‘The continued acceleration of electrified vehicle registrations is good for the industry, the consumer and the environment but, with the pace of public charging infrastructure struggling to keep up, we need swift action and binding public charger targets.’

ALL-TIME HIGH
LCV NEWS
Best November ever, despite market volatility by James Batchelor james.batchelor@blackballmedia.co.uk NOVEMBER 2021 was the best month ever for van registrations, latest data shows. Figures from the SMMT show 31,320 new vans were registered – an 11.4 per cent rise on the five-year pre-pandemic average, and an all-time high. The organisation said demand was still very high for vans but the continued short supply of semiconductors was causing some ‘market volatility’. November was still feeling the benefit of a recovery in the construction sector in September and growing business investment, especially in online retail, which was fuelling demand for vans, added the trade body. Growth was recorded in all van classes excluding those weighing less than or equal to two tonnes, which fell by 19.6 per cent to 1,361 units.

LONG-TERMERS
VOLVO XC40 THE KNOWLEDGE
Volvo XC40 Recharge Plug-in Hybrid T5
A (very) cold snap lets Ted Welford see how ‘our’ hybrid XC40 copes in more challenging conditions.
Y
ou’d think that growing up in rural Yorkshire I’d be acclimatised to a cold winter, but oh boy is this season not a highlight of mine. It’s always a shock to the system when the temperature plummets, and I was helped quite massively last winter by having a pick-up for the coldest spells, meaning I wouldn’t think twice about heading out in a blizzard or on the snowy, ungritted roads around us. But this year I’m back in a more ‘normal’ car, and despite how the Volvo XC40 looks with its chunky plastic wheel arches, high-set driving position and plentiful ground clearance, ‘my’ hybrid long-termer is actually front-wheel-drive. As a side note, the B4 petrol is all-wheel-drive, as is the P8 electric model, for those wanting that extra traction. However, despite my initial preconceptions, and thinking how easily a quite heavy frontwheel-drive car would get stuck, KM70 XKO has really surprised me. On a recent Sunday, when there had been snowfall followed by ice overnight – arguably one of the worst driving conditions – I thought I’d brave the weather to take the dog for a good long walk. While thankfully the main roads were all quite clear, some of the other stretches weren’t. One particular section of tarmac could only be described as sheet ice and has one steep uphill stretch. I was adamant that the XC40 would barely get a fraction of the way up on its standard-fit Pirelli tyres (it’s not on winters or all-seasons). But to my amazement it didn’t even struggle, going straight up with no skidding at all – amusingly passing the tyre marks where people had had to give up. I was particularly impressed. This latest cold snap has also reaffirmed one of the XC40’s best features, which is the app that goes with the car. It essentially means your smartphone can connect with it, allowing for a range of functions to be accessed remotely. There are some that are impressively useful, such as being notified if you’ve left the car unlocked, with the app then letting you secure the car, regardless of where you are. There’s also a feature that lets you send sat nav routes to the car, but given I tend to default to Google Maps anyway, I’ve yet to use it or really see the point of it. But by the far the best thing that the app lets you do is warm the car before you get in. I know it’s a first-world problem, but it’s quite unpleasant to come to a car that’s cold and frozen. However, with the app, you can heat the car up before you get to it by programming it for up to 15 minutes. It even gives you control over the heated seats and steering wheels, meaning you’ll soon have a warmed backside and toasty hands when getting in. If you have the same routine each day, you can even set a timer, meaning the car will automatically heat up for you. In the summer months when your car might be too hot – oh, how we can dream – it also works the opposite way, meaning the Volvo will be cooled down for you. This isn’t a Volvo-exclusive feature of course, but the Volvo app seems especially slick. It’s also rather good if, like me, you’re big into your stats, with a particular favourite feature being the ‘usage’ map that tells you how many miles have been electric. Over the past seven days, for example, my XC40 has done nearly 50 per cent of its miles purely on electric, which is pretty good going and emphasises the benefits that a plug-in hybrid can bring. With KM70 XKO sadly set to return to Volvo in the new year, I aim to keep enjoying it up until the very last second. And should the weather take a turn for the worse again, I’ll know that a cold interior is one thing I won’t have to worry about!
Price (as tested): £49,125 Engine: 1.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid Power: 258bhp Torque: 425Nm 0-60mph: 7 seconds Max speed: 112 mph Emissions: 47-57g/km CO2 Economy): 117.7-134.5mpg Mileage: 8,220
This month’s highlight: Using the app to warm the car up before getting in – great with the weather being so cold!
