Jully Marcus&

Jully and Marcus’ love story proves that divine timing is everything. Just two days before the end of a cruise, the two met at 2 a.m. after the sound clash on the ship's promenade, as it sailed from Ocho Rios to Montego Bay, Jamaica. They stayed together the entire morning on the ship and attended the Nyabinghi Prayer.

Considering that neither of them had originally planned to be on that trip, it's amazing how love can find you when you least expect it. Jully and Marcus have been together ever since, proving that love will find you when you're open to it.

Get inspired by their romantic engagement session, captured by Samantha Clarke Photography.

ENGAGEMENT STORY:

I (Valentine) wanted the proposal to be intimate and personal, so I decided to gather Jully's closest family and friends—people who are like family to us. The key part here was that Jully had no idea this was coming. It’s tough to keep secrets from her, but I managed to surprise her.

Then, when the moment felt just right, I turned to Jully, got down on one knee, and asked her to marry me. It was a moment I’ll never forget. The love and support from everyone around us made it more meaningful, and I’m so thankful she said yes.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT YOUR WEDDING?

We are looking forward to celebrating life and love with our closest family and friends in the place where it all began, making the day even more special.

Marché De’Shon&

“He who finds a wife finds a good thing,” and De’Shon found Marché in her Instagram DMs back in 2016. Initially, she was reluctant to be pursued by a man through the internet, especially because they were long distance. Marché was living in NYC, and De’Shon was back home in MD, but his persistence and charm made her have a change of heart. After many trips back and forth to visit each other, and even a few out of the country, Marché eventually moved back to her hometown in MD where they continue to grow as a couple and a family.

The two had a stunning engagement session, captured by Reem Photography, to celebrate their upcoming wedding day.

ENGAGEMENT STORY:

What I thought was a photoshoot in front of the Eiffel Tower ended up being a day that changed both our lives forever. De'Shon got down on his left knee for a long three minutes, waiting for me to finally turn around and see the beautiful Neil Lane

diamond ring sparkling from that little black box he held in his hand. I was in full photoshoot mode, until I finally turned around. Smiling from ear to ear, De'Shon promised me forever. Letting out an emotional cry, I fell into De'Shon's arms where I will now lay until death do us part.

Mitzi Virgil&

In fall 2003, Mitzi and Virgil met at Tuskegee University. They exchanged numbers, but didn't speak for weeks. Eventually, the two talked and started hanging out with Virgil picking Mitzi up in his 1992 Plymouth Acclaim, humorously called the "Hot Box" since the windows did not roll down. They dated until spring 2006, but remained friends. Virgil graduated in 2007 and moved to Huntsville, AL, while Mitzi stayed at Tuskegee for grad school. Despite the distance, Virgil kept tabs on Mitzi through her friends, and they occasionally spoke. They began dating again in 2013, and have loved each other ever since.

Read more of their amazing love story and see the timeless details of their engagement session, captured by YNOT iMages.

ENGAGEMENT STORY:

We invited all of our family and friends to attend my graduation in Chicago, IL, as I was receiving my doctorate degree from Valparaiso University. Virgil led me to believe he was planning a graduation dinner in downtown Chicago. Before we had dinner, I opened my graduation gifts and Virgil saved his

gifts for last. His first gift was perfume. His second gift was packaged inside SIX boxes that I had to open one by one. By the time I got to the sixth box, he was down on one knee! After the proposal, Virgil presented a cake with a Jamaican flag. I asked, “What does the flag represent?” Virgil announced he had already scheduled the wedding for June 1st in Jamaica. All I had to do was sort out the wedding decorations. Jamaica, here we come!

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT YOUR WEDDING?

Our dream has always been to have a destination wedding on the beach. It is unbelievable we are living our dream! These are moments we will cherish our entire life. With God, we will continue our love story and live happily ever after.

Eboni Chatman&

Eboni and Chatman’s storybook romance began at a lounge in Birmingham, AL in October 2023. They were invited by a mutual friend and instantly connected through conversation about food, music, and everything else. That same evening, Chatman sent a photo of Eboni’s hand to his group chat stating, “I think I found my wife.” He did just that! To celebrate their love, the couple had a stunning engagement photoshoot with YNOT iMages.

ENGAGEMENT STORY:

On May 3, 2024, Chatman told me that we were going to an all black attire real estate mixer. Little did I know, he had planned the perfect proposal. It had rained all day, but as we drove through Mt. Brookwood towards the overlook, the sun came out. The overlook is one of my most peaceful and favorite places. Right at sunset, with a perfect view of the city, Chatman got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. With tears flowing, I proudly said yes! We wanted this shoot to be timeless, elegant, bold, and represent our love and passion for one another.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT YOUR WEDDING?

Chatman and I tied the knot on May 20, 2024. We look forward to continuing to allow God to lead our lives and household as we continue daily to align with His will for our lives.

TOP 5 THINGS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING A DESTINATION WEDDING IN GHANA

Since 2019 was hallmarked as the Year of Return and Beyond, Ghana (formerly known as the Gold Coast) has emerged as a highly coveted travel bucket list destination in the Motherland. The Detty December experience has piqued the interests of travel enthusiasts, thus driving high travel and tourism volumes to Ghana each year. But beyond Ghana’s position as a highly coveted vacation destination, the country has also positioned itself as a growing and thriving destination wedding location. Simply put, the wedding landscape in Ghana is thriving, exciting, and impeccable. With idyllic villas, pristine beaches, and luxurious hotels, Ghana provides a scenic backdrop for couples to plan and host memorable weddings.

Boots on the Ground: A planner that is based in Ghana is a huge asset to any client planning a wedding in Ghana. There is immense value in having a liaison who speaks the local dialect, who can provide first-hand and accurate insight on vendor recommendations, and most importantly, who is aware and knowledgeable on how to manage the nuances of planning a wedding in Ghana. An event planning team that is locally based will assist you with venue recommendations, decor vendors, rental

vendors, catering vendors, beauty vendors, and so much more. Simply put, you need boots on the ground.

Location, Location, Location: From intimate wedding soirees to lavish and opulent wedding celebrations, Ghana offers locations that appeal to the palettes of discerning clientele. Ghanaian event vendors do not shy away from pushing boundaries. Traditional wedding venues such as banquet halls exist, but they are not typically the norm. Outdoor event spaces are very common and popular for weddings and events in Ghana. Clients have the opportunity to build their venue “from the ground up” with extensive production teams creating jaw dropping transformations—the sky is really the limit. However, if you do prefer utilizing an indoor venue space, hotels such as Kempinski Hotel Ghana, Labadi Beach Hotel, Movenpick Ambassador Hotel, and The Royal Senchi Hotel offer sophisticated indoor event options. The culinary scene in Ghana is booming and expanding rapidly with vibrant and trendy restaurants. Full restaurant buyouts are also viable options for couples who prefer an indoor space but in a non-traditional setting, such as a ballroom or convention center.

Custom/Bespoke Attire: Ghana is home to some amazing and highly sought after bridal fashion designers. Intricately woven kente attire adorned with hand sewn beads, varying wedding gown silhouettes, bespoke suits, and tuxedos are just some of the options available to couples. There are top designers to work with, too, including House of Oath, Saadia Sanusi, House Póan, Pistis, Dashline Atelier, Brommon, Atto Andoh, and Kenneth Tetteh.

Explore the Gold Coast: Ghana is a hub for various attractions and activities rich in cultural heritage. Enhance the experiential journey of your wedding by planning group excursions. Your options are vast: delve deep into the rich history of the Transatlantic Slave Trade castles such as Elmina Castle or Cape Coast Castle. Alternatively, you can explore Kakum National Park, a lush rainforest best known for its canopy walk suspended high in the sky, or go for a swim in another beautiful attraction called the Wli Agumatsa Waterfalls. No matter what you decide, take time to explore the beautiful natural

landscape and historic sites of Ghana. If you are looking for a relaxing resort-style atmosphere to unwind and appreciate nature’s canvas, consider Safari Valley Resort, Royal Senchi Resort, and Aqua Safari Resort.

Travel Periods and Entry Requirements: When planning a destination wedding in Ghana, it is important to take into consideration factors that may impact travel. Ghana’s temperature is hot typically all year round. However, as many warm climates experience, the rainy season is inevitable. Ghana’s rainy season is usually between April and June. Also, consider that guests traveling from North America to Ghana will face lengthy travel times. As such, guests may want to maximize their time in Ghana to make it worth the trip. Pick a time of year that will be conducive to guests' schedules for travel. Also note that December and January have the highest travel volumes to Ghana. Most couples plan their weddings in Ghana during the dry season.

All traveling visitors to Ghana require a valid passport. Additional travel and entry requirements must be adhered to. Travelers from the USA, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and other European countries require an entry visa to visit Ghana, which must be obtained prior to anticipated departure dates. Lastly, all visitors require a mandatory yellow fever vaccination.

You can plan and curate a celebration of love that is festive and memorable in Ghana, the West African gem, which is known for its warm and friendly hospitality. Ghana is no stranger to splendid celebrations. Use intentional ways to tap into the culture and tastefully infuse elements to further enhance your guests’ experience, especially if it’s their first time visiting Ghana.

LOVE FROM Q: A Wedding Setlist

Dedicated to the

Loving Legacy of Quincy Jones

An archivist of Black history.

A remnant for the explanation of divinity.

An activist for Black love.

A poet and conductor for the nuanced venue of romance.

Quincy Delight Jones Jr. was not just an icon and legend in the music field, but also a true change agent for Black progress as we’ve known it since his prominence rose in the 1950s.

From his work with Count Basie and Frank Sinatra to helping co-create the iconic sound we now know to be connected to Michael Jackson's iconography, Quincy Jones’ 91 years of life truly reflected an unbridled love for and legacy toward the liberation of Black love through the form of music.

His music transcends the restricting and, at times, racially motivated constructs of genres. Instead, he bent all hindrances and created love letters set to music that have stood the test of time, thus creating some of the most classic love songs we listen to today.

To honor the legacy of one of our greatest icons, we have crafted a one-of-one music setlist for you to add to your wedding day playlist.

From the bridal party to the reception after-party, Quincy Jones’ music is sure to add just the perfect touch of legacy and love to your wedding day setlist.

FOR THE BACHELORETTE PARTY TIKTOK VIDEO:

“It’s My Party” by Lesley Gore “It’s my party, I can cry if I want to” Written by Herb Weiner, John Gluck Jr., and Wally Gold, this 1963 Quincy Jones produced classic is perfect for you and your girls to make an adorable TikTok video that's both trendy and classic.

FOR THE PARENTS OF THE BRIDE & GROOM’S ENTRANCE:

“Moody’s Mood For Love” by Quincy Jones “Let me take you by the hand / Come let us visit out there / In that new promised land” Featuring the vocal majesties of Take 6, Rachelle Ferrell, James Moody, and Brian McKnight, this song feels like love wrapped up into a melodic hug. This captivating tune is off of Jones’ 1995 R&B/Soul album, Q’s Jook Joint, and is perfectly sophisticated for your parents to make their opening entrance to their seats.

Photograph: John Dominis/The LIFE Picture Collection/Shutterstock

FOR THE BRIDE’S WALK DOWN THE AISLE:

“Love Theme from ‘the Getaway’ (Instrumental)” by Quincy Jones

Another instrumental track from Mr. Jones, this song is slow, soothing, and sensuous, allowing your moment to not be overly bombarded by a blazing track of vocals and complicated lyrics. Instead, it invites you and your guests to bask in the moment without distractions by focusing solely on you with this sweet melody playing softly in the background.

FOR THE RECEPTION COCKTAIL HOUR:

“Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra

“You’re all I long for / All I worship and adore / In other words, please be true / In other words, in other words / I love you”

Quincy Jones played a major hand in crafting one of the most famous songs in the world when he helped the legendary Frank Sinatra re-record a new version of the classic standard in 1964. Quincy served as the arranger of the song and famously changed the time signature, giving it a more fun, loose feel that allowed people to dance and groove with it. This would be the perfect tune to play during cocktail hour to give your guests something nice, jazzy, and sophisticated to listen to as they mingle.

FOR THE GROOMSMEN RECEPTION ENTRANCE:

“Good Life” by Kanye West

“If you feelin’ me now, then put yo’ hands up in the sky / Ooh I’m good!”

Although Mr. Jones didn’t have a direct

hand in the production of this track, this ultra-famous Kanye West anthem samples one of Quincy’s most iconic hits he produced for Michael Jackson, “P.Y.T.” This hip hop classic gives us all the feels and is a fun choice for the fellas to confidently stroll out to as they make their entrance into your wedding reception.

FOR YOUR BRIDE & GROOM RECEPTION ENTRANCE: “Welcome (Homecoming Live)” by Beyoncé

This instrumental intro from the now iconic Coachella performance by Beyoncé set a precedent for her concert that night and is sure to do the same for your wedding. Produced by Jones, this entirely instrumental track starts with Rebirth Brass Band’s “Do Watcha Wanna Do,” flows into Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble,” continues with Jay Z and Bey’s “Family Feud” Clark Sisters sampled duet along with Doug E. Fresh’s iconic “The Show,” before circling back and ending with “Humble” by Kendrick. This song brings life and fun to the party and is sure to get your crowd on their feet as you make your first entrance as husband and wife.

FOR A MOMENT WITH YOUR SISTERS:

“Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister)” by Quincy Jones

“Oh sister, have I got news for you / I’m somethin’ / I hope you think that you’re somethin’ too”

One of the most iconic movie songs in all of Black cinema is this heartfelt classic written by Jones, Rod Temperton, and Lionel Richie for The Color Purple soundtrack. It perfectly and poignantly illustrates the bond of sisters, making it the perfect

choice of song if you’re looking to have a special moment of tribute for your sisters, biological or chosen, on your special day.

FOR THE FIRST DANCE:

“You Put A Move on My Heart” by Tamia

"I've got a real thing here by my side / Someone who needs me, holding me tight / And these special feelings won't ever fade / 'Cause I knew, I knew from the start / You put a move on my heart"

Not only was Jones known for his production, instrumentation, and writing abilities, but he is also responsible for discovering several artists, one of them being the incomparable R&B goddess, Tamia. This song, originally sung by Mica Paris, encapsulates the arresting yet liberating power true love brings, and Tamia’s powerhouse vocals add fire to the burning flame, making it the perfect song for your first dance as husband and wife.

FOR THE DANCE FLOOR:

“Off the Wall” by Michael Jackson

“So tonight, gonna leave that nine to five upon the shelf / And just enjoy yourself / Groove, let the madness in the music get to you / Life ain’t so bad at all / Livin’ life off the wall”

The perfect start to dancing the night away with your husband, family, and friends, Michael Jackson is sure to hit hard amongst those on a dance floor. Produced by Quincy Jones, this classic is fun to dance to and interact with to start the night off right, reminding guests to focus on being in the moment and escaping into the high vibes of love.

BRIDAL TREND REPORT

Bridal fashion has always been an evolving landscape, where tradition meets innovation. This proved to be evident at New York Bridal Fashion Week as designers debuted collections that highlighted classic bridal components while reimagining them in fresh, innovative ways that push the boundaries of bridal fashion. The modern bride wants to experience the formalities of weddings and honor tradition while expressing their individuality. Designers are embracing this challenge by infusing age-old bridal elements with contemporary flair. Here’s a look at how traditional bridal design elements are being given new life for fall 2025.

couture

As brides fall back in love with large wedding experiences and maximalist trends following years of the micro weddings, designers are also finding their way back to creating couture inspired wedding fashion. This season proves that designers are ready to bring back the artistry and craftsmanship of couture. These dresses, inspired by the intricate artistry of high fashion, are not just garments— they are works of art. The couture trend brings together the elegance of bespoke tailoring with the grandeur of opulent fabrics and meticulous details. Made from the finest materials and offering a one-of-a-kind fit, a couture-inspired gown for the modern bride offers the ultimate in luxury, individuality, and unforgettable style.

bodice bouqets

Flowers have long been associated with weddings, representing love, beauty, and new beginnings—making them a perfect motif for not only wedding design but also dresses. One of the standout trends to emerge this season is the addition of floral-inspired embellishments to the bustline of bridal gowns. Whether rendered in lace, 3D appliqué, or embroidery, this trend offers brides a romantic-yet-contemporary twist on one of the most infamous wedding design elements. The floral bustline trend brings an air of femininity and natural beauty to wedding gowns, evoking the ethereal quality of flowers in full bloom. From subtle, understated designs to oversized blooms, this trend allows brides to express their personality and style in a way that feels both fresh and timeless.

demure details

Although the more elaborate trends of yesteryear seem to be making a return, the minimal bride does not need to worry as bridal simplicity has always been in style. For the 2025 season, designers are opting for the soft white and clear embroidery once made popular in an effort to dress brides in the traditional all-white wedding look. So although nothing new, white and clear embroidery fits the evolving bridal aesthetic perfectly. It reflects the growing desire for gowns that are simultaneously timeless and fresh—pieces that stand out for their beauty and craftsmanship, rather than for excessive embellishments or over-the-top detail. Whether it’s a subtle accent or a full gown design, this trend promises to leave a lasting impression on brides and guests alike.

lovely in lace

Lace continues to be one of the most beloved fabrics in bridal fashion for good reason: It exudes timeless beauty, romance, and elegance. Whether you’re drawn to the delicate floral patterns, the ethereal texture, or the rich history behind this fabric, a delicate lace wedding gown is a perfect choice for any bride looking to embody grace and sophistication on her wedding day.

As trends evolve, lace remains a bridal staple, adapting and transforming with each generation. For brides who desire a wedding dress that is both classic and contemporary, delicate lace is an enduring choice that offers beauty, versatility, and a sense of romance that will never fade.

pearls of perfection

Pearls have long been a symbol of grace, luxury, and timeless beauty in bridal fashion. As bridal fashion evolves, designers continue to find innovative ways to incorporate pearls into wedding gowns. This season, we see pearls used to elevate the simplicity of traditional designs, creating unforgettable statement pieces. In the 2025 collections, designers have shown the true versatility of pearls, using them sparingly as a modest detail or in bold designs that are fully pearled from top to bottom. A pearlized wedding gown can be for the bride with a love for elegance, vintage-inspired aesthetics, or modern-day glamour.

Alissa Dwayne&

Alissa and Dwayne were first introduced at the end of 2010 by a mutual friend. Alissa was a former athlete focused on her career goals, and Dwayne was still playing professionally overseas.

“We first spoke to each other through Skype. After months of getting to know each other, we were able to meet for the first time in New Orleans the next year. Contrary to the fairy tale story, sparks didn’t fly initially, but we did form a true friendship. After a few years, we decided to make it official. Working together, growing together, and trusting God has helped mold us greatly.”

Alissa: I felt calm most of the day, although I was apprehensive about the weather and our ceremony was set to be outside. I told myself to control what I can, and if there is something I can't control, let God handle it.

The nervous feeling went away once I saw Dwayne. We were able to say “I do” outside. Thank you, God!

Dwayne: My wedding experience was almost like a dream. It was amazing to see all the preparation and sacrifices come all together. When I saw her come down the aisle, she literally looked like an angel.

WEDDING SONG, EXPLAIN CHOICE FOR SONG:

The song we chose for our first dance was “First Time” by Teeks. It transitioned into a cover of Shania Twain’s “You’re Still The One” by Jac Ross. We wanted songs that had meaning and truly felt special to us as well as our story.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS A MARRIED COUPLE?

The bigger blessings that God has in store for us. He has blessed us so much so far, and we are so thankful for that. We look forward to continuing to grow together in every aspect of our lives.

Nicole Martin&

Nicole and Martin first crossed paths in 2019 at the WayMaker Men’s Summit, where Nicole was the executive producer, and Martin was on the advisory board. During that first summit, the two worked together seamlessly. Then the pandemic hit, and the next two years were virtual. While navigating the challenges of producing a high-caliber virtual event, Martin and Nicole grew closer. During one production, Martin jokingly asked her to stop walking in front of his cameras, and he finally told her to stand next to him. They shared a look, and something shifted.

From there, their friendship deepened into something special. “We found ourselves traveling between cities—Dubai, Tulum, Cancun, New York, and Chicago—until it became clear that we wanted to build a life together,” Nicole writes. In September 2023, Martin proposed on the very stage where they first met. It was the perfect culmination of their story. The power couple tied the knot in a luxe wedding day celebration, captured by Erika Bracey and Belen Aquino.

BRIEFLY TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING EXPERIENCE AND HOW THE BOTH OF YOU FELT ON YOUR BIG DAY. INCLUDE YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT.

We wanted the day to feel deeply personal and filled with moments of joy and surprise. Guests were invited to select several cards with different categories and share their advice, blessings, or thoughts on how to keep our marriage strong.

The unity ceremony was one of the most meaningful parts of the day. Our closest friends and family participated with heartfelt readings, while the room was filled with the inspirational sounds of a gospel choir.

One of the most emotional moments was the tribute to my father, which took everyone on a journey of the two of us through my life from adulthood to babyhood. To make it even more special, R&B artist Sparkle performed, bringing the moment to life with her incredible voice.

Another unforgettable moment was the adoption reveal of our daughter, Bailee. Martin officially adopted Bailee, and we shared this joyous announcement with our guests. We then had the honor of reintroducing her as Bailee Nicole Davis. It was a beautiful moment that symbolized the love and bond that unites us as a family.

Looking back, our wedding was everything we dreamed it would be—personal, joyous, and filled with love. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect way to begin this new chapter together.

WEDDING SONG, EXPLAIN CHOICE FOR SONG:

Our wedding song was “Do 4 LOVE” by Snoh Aalegra. Even though it is a cover, the dramatic instrumental combined with her emotion felt like a perfect representation of our love.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS A MARRIED COUPLE?

As a married couple, we are most looking forward to building a life filled with longevity, health, and prosperity. Together, we hope to build a legacy that reflects our shared dreams, values, and unwavering commitment to one another.

Nonny and Mark attended the same high school back in Western Australia but didn’t speak much to each other at that time. Nonny was a little shy, and Mark was two years older. "Once Mark graduated, we started dating; I was 17, and he was 19. I remember all of our friends being shocked to find out we were boyfriend and girlfriend. I think my greatest blessing is finding my person so early in life. We have been together through the many seasons of life, and 14 years later, we are still each other’s favorite." The lovely couple exchanged vows in a beautiful ceremony captured by Mervè Togan. Get inspired by the chic details of their walk down the aisle.

THE ROYAL WEDDING OF

Jalen Uboh voiced a prophecy as a teenager in high school to one of his teachers, “I’m going to marry her.” Anika Carter, a year younger than him, fascinated Jalen; even though, they were just friends. When Jalen graduated, Anika shocked herself with tears in waterfall. “I realized that I was going to miss him. I was going to miss my friend,” the bride remembers.

Anika Jalen&

ambitious, while in college at Kennesaw State University, Jalen earned a building contract from the government, which elevated his financial status.

Jalen recalls, “I asked my father, how do you know who you should marry for sure? Thinking of his own choice for a wife, his father replied, “You will know.” Jalen, in his own mind, adds, “The Bible says that the woman came from Adam’s rib, so the idea of Anika felt like a reunification.” She makes him feel whole.

Attending separate colleges in Georgia, Jalen and Anika remained phone friends. Jalen says, “She was a D1 track star at Georgia Tech University. She was smart and had such a competitive nature. I liked that. I loved talking to her.” Keeping his eyes on the prize, Jalen felt that in order to marry his dream girl he would have to present himself well. Naturally

Jalen told his father he would be traveling to Japan, where Anika’s parents live, to propose. His father informed him that “we,” meaning his immediate family, would be traveling to Japan for the Knocking. The Knocking is an African tradition where the family asks for the daughter’s hand in marriage. Jalen’s great-grandmother, Mary Covington, his parents, his sister, and his brother joined Jalen bearing sweet gifts in the form of Louis Vuitton bags, wallets, colognes, perfumes, chocolates, and more. Chanel, Jalen’s mother, says, “We all flew on Christmas Day from Atlanta to Japan. It was our best trip as a family.” Jalen’s great-grandmother had not only never been to FROM PROPHESY TO PROMISE

Not that he needed any elevation to his status. Prince Jalen Uboh is the son of Prince Tunde (Tony) Uboh and his wife Princess Chanel Uboh of the Igbo tribe of Ekuku Agbor Kingdom in Delta State. The Ubohs are official African royals.

Asia, but it was also her first flight overseas. Chanel continues, “No one told the Carters that we were bringing gifts, but we were taken aback by the fact that they had more gifts for us than we had for them!” Both families were emotionally moved. Chanel shares, “My husband spoke, and Anika’s father spoke at the Knocking. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. After that, we danced all night!” The Carter family received the Ubohs and an engagement of love and family was formed. Chanel adds lovingly, "We brought our fiancé back."

The Uboh wedding was a four-day extravaganza. Mindful of their attendees’ travel, the first day was the Meet and Greet held at the Uboh’s estate. Guests from Japan, Nigeria, Ghana, London, Italy, South Africa, and several states in America filled their expansive home with love and celebration for the couple.

The second day was full-on African regalia. The Traditional African wedding was Coming to America themed, a majestic vision with each family dancing into the venue. Jalen informs, “We had to wear specific African fabric: The Carters wore green and the Ubohs wore royal blue. Everything was made in the castle of our Kingdom.” Dancing into the wedding with his massive family was the most memorable part for Jalen’s father, he says, “I had to ask my older brother, the Sitting King, for permission to represent the tribe.”

Giving Tony the blessing, the Sitting King sent Tony, Prince Tunde, his crown that he had never worn, which was made for him when he was born. “When I came out wearing the crown, that was not me.” Tony explains, “I was carrying the spirit of my grandfather, my father, and my brothers.” The name Uboh means “the king is here.”

When Jalen’s father threw money in the air, it signaled the guests that they were allowed to participate in the African tradition of the throwing of the money or Money Spraying, which is a raining of monetary blessing for the couple for their new life.

The American wedding was on the third day, and it was elegant and profound with Jalen’s great-grandmother, who attended the Knocking, marrying the couple as the officiant. With everything going on behind-the-scenes each day, Anika says with a sigh, “My favorite part was seeing Jalen for the first time.” Jalen loved offering the gifts to Anika’s father in true Nigerian tradition.

Anika had nine dresses total for the four-day ceremony. “I wore seven. I didn’t want to spend the entire time getting dressed. So, my advice is to future brides is to make sure you enjoy your wedding.” Feeling similarly, Jalen had seven outfits; he wore four.

The young couple’s sophisticated genes also pour into their taste in music. The American wedding was not monopolized by one genre, but instead layered with soul music, afrobeats, and hip-hop. Their wedding songs were “Sweet Love” by Anita Baker and “Glow of Love” by Luther Vandross.

Prince Jalen looks forward to settling into being a husband to his new Princess Anika. Confident in their love, they know they will always have solid marital insight from the Ubohs and the Carters, and no matter what, their union will always be royal.

The Black Love Effect: HOW JOI AND TRISTAN WILKERSON’S LOVE STORY LED THEM BACK TO Africa

PHOTOGRAPHER: YNOT IMAGES

To be born Black in America is to be born into an incubated sense of whiplash— searching for belonging whilst having an innate inner knowing that you and your ancestors' story has been lost in the systemically racist system in which you dwell.

So, then you begin searching for a remedy.

The idea of belonging is an interesting one for Black Americans. Having been brought into this country and hired for a 400-year-long unpaid internship that built the land on which we dwell despite never getting credit for it, love becomes not just an emotion one longs to feel but also a lifestyle in which they must operate in to survive and thrive in these red, white and blue trenches. For us, living this life and finding and choosing someone to do that with isn't a protest to the powers that be, but rather an answer to our own life’s conquest—an answered prayer we all pray for. And in that, its effects are limitless. It breeds culture, community and conviction.

This is Black love, and this is the story of Joi and Tristan Wilkerson.

The Wilkerson's tale is classic from start to finish. Joi’s career in education collided with Tristan’s work in the politics and venture capital spaces over eight years ago when the two met through a mutual friend at a networking party.

The Black Love Effect meets you where you are.

Joi Wilkerson: One of my best friends was an intern in the same organization he was. She and I went to the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Week, where there was this party hosted by the Alabama Caucus. She saw Tristan when we walked in and spoke to him. The former mayor of DC walked in, and we were taking a picture with him, and Tristan came and jumped in our picture. Tristan was about to leave, so he came back and took a Snapchat photo of the whole group. Everyone was giving their Snapchat name, so he could tag us. He came over and asked for my number, and I was like, “You got my Snapchat.”

Tristan Wilkerson: And from there, I was on Snapchat more than ever trying to get her attention posting me cooking, traveling, etc. I didn’t start pursuing hard until she gave me permission to date her.

Kennedi LéShea: How did you ask your permission to date her? That’s such a lost art in this day and age of dating and courtship.

TW: We had gone out a couple of times; we went ice skating and had lunch at the park, and then I took her out to dinner. After hanging out a little bit, I told her I was interested, and we should spend more time together. She responded with, “Well, I’m not easy like that, so don’t expect me to be coming over to your place” and set some boundaries. She said, “You’re welcome to pursue, but I'm going to need to be pursued.” And from there, I was very careful about how I pursued her. I knew it meant a lot to her. I told her I knew she was the wife type early on, and I didn’t want to mess that up. I just don’t think you’re gonna get more than one chance with someone who's a wife because they’re not into wasting their time, so it was a long pursuit. We were

friends for 18 months—almost two years—and I started to really turn it on about a year before we got engaged. We got engaged September 4, 2022.

And since their initial meeting and courtship, they have both shared their immense amount of growth they’ve both exhibited.

THE BLACK LOVE EFFECT LIBERATES A DESIRE FOR GROWTH.

JW: I think I am still growing and changing, and that was the hardest part for me. Prior to being engaged, then getting engaged, and now being married, it was recognizing that there is a transformation that has to take place. I would say I was self-centered. The beauty of marriage is getting

"BLACK

LOVE is a rebel response—it’s revolutionary. It’s like your response to the man. It's your conquering response that guarantees that you get to win in this life."

someone who supports and wants to help you refine your goals and who you are. Tristan supports me in everything I want to do and helps me see things from a different lens. I’ll never forget when I was a teacher in the classroom and he was like, “You can be a principal,” and I was like, “No way.” I just didn’t think it was possible, but he saw it in me and helped me get there. So, before him, it was all about me. Now I’ve realized, it can still be about me, and I can also discover how to contribute to our relationship and be my best for it while doing that. Focusing on my own goals doesn’t have to stop. I think women think that has to stop, but no! Get you someone that will support you in what you want to do, and you can do the same for them.

TW: Marriage made a man out of me in a whole new way. I don’t think I really understood what it meant to be

a man; serving everyone around him, his community, his family, his friends. I made a lot of sacrifices, thinking I was doing the right things. But I was performing wisdom. And if you [truly] had it, you wouldn’t have to question yourself in so many things. The process of getting married was transformational for me; I learned the story of Jesus in a whole new way. My relationship with God deepened in a way I hadn’t even dreamt of. I was realizing I truly wasn’t in control, and I had to go along this Damascus road to change. So, I’m much more of a man now, and I’m accountable to all those around me. We all love to say the scripture, “When a man finds a wife, he finds a good thing,” but the scripture goes on to say, “and obtains favor from the Lord.” It’s that part. You didn’t just find a good thing, you obtained favor from the Lord, and that’s a humbling posture to be put in.

And when it came time for Tristan to obtain his favor from the Lord, he decided a trip to Paris would do the trick.

THE BLACK LOVE EFFECT IS CONFIDENT IN PURSUIT OF ITS HAPPINESS.

JW: So, in December of 2021, we were supposed to go to Europe for two weeks, but around that time, Covid started to pick back up. I said, “Tristan, we don’t need to take that trip. We don’t know what could happen. We don’t know if we could get stuck or sick, so let’s not.” I was doing education contract work and traveling a lot between D.C. and Arkansas, so we postponed the trip to April. I was working at the school, and you can’t

"MARRIAGE isn’t going to make you, you’re going to make the marriage. So, go do the work to see what it takes to make a healthy marriage."

just leave. I told him no again because I was starting a new job. In September, he goes “Joi, either we take this trip, or we’re done.”

He had planned a shopping spree in Paris, and someone greeted me as I got out of the car and said, “Ms. Joi, can you follow me?” We went into this private back room with champagne and all these clothes and shoes and he said, “Try on and pick what you want.” It was something out of a movie.

Tristan then guided Joi through a pre-orchestrated photoshoot the next morning, which ended in him getting down on one knee.

And when the time came to plan the wedding of their dreams, the Wilkersons knew there was only one place they could share their vows amongst family and close friends: Africa.

While having such an opulent destination wedding may seem as a “flex” to some, for the Wilkersons, it was a divine and thoughtful choice.

THE BLACK LOVE EFFECT IS INTENTIONAL.

TW: We committed to having our wedding in Africa because there’s so much about us that we don’t know about and who we are. And we have to do so much work to find that information. This idea of belonging and needing to belong, it's great to be able to see, touch, and feel that [in Africa]. And to know we’re worthy of it!

“The whole day felt like a dream. It felt good,” the two shared regarding the big day. But their favorite part? Jumping the broom on the continent from which their ancestors originated.

JW: When you think of the origin of that tradition, for African Americans, getting married was our way of being rebels. It was us still celebrating love. For our ancestors, it was saying, “My partner may be sold tomorrow, and I may never see our kids again. But I’m going to make this declaration in front of people that this is who I have decided for the rest of my life to be with.” Being able to incorporate

something our ancestors had to for their love and us having the opportunity to choose to do it was probably my favorite part of our wedding day.

Amidst the beauty of Africa and its culture was the outward confession of their shared love for God amongst their family and friends.

THE BLACK LOVE EFFECT IS POETICALLY PROPHETIC.

TW: Our prayer was that God would get the glory from all of the planning we were doing and that people would be moved and experience the move of the Holy Spirit in that space. The purpose of praise and worship is to prime the Spirit for us, and that’s what our wedding did.

The two recall a South African hymn being sung as guests walked into the chapel in which their nuptials were taking place. Then they were

"TheBlackLoveEffectispassion, pursuit,andpurpose."

led into a time of precious worship and exhortation by their grandiose music ensemble with a Gospel medley that included classics like Richard Smallwood’s “Total Praise”.

“It was classy, it was cozy, it was church.” Tristan caps off the dreamy summary.

KL: You guys seem to have such a focus on intention in your lives both singularly and together as husband and wife. What goals do you have set for your marriage?

JW: To be a witness to our community and by “community,” I don’t even mean just our outside, local, and global community, but I mean our community of friends and family.

Tristan agreed, ensuring the two will “always find ways to serve.”

KL: What advice do you have for others looking to get married one day?

JW: I would tell a woman to really know who she is as a person. Invest in yourself. Do all the things. If you want a degree, go get that degree. If you want to own a business, go own that business. If you want to volunteer and serve your community, go do that; don’t wait on somebody else. Go do it. Invest in you. And really become in tune and intentional with who you are as a person. Have a really deep relationship with God. The person that is for you will be for you, but if you know who you are as a person, you’re literally going to soar. You will be fine. But don’t wait on somebody else. Go do it. Do all the things. Travel by yourself. Just do it, girl, do you! I feel like women don't live their best lives. Guys aren’t waiting to live theirs! So, go live!

TW: I would say that marriage isn’t going to make you, you’re going to make the marriage. So, go do the work to see what it takes to make a healthy marriage. Fellas, trust the process, and if you’re not in your process, go get in it.

As for what they want their legacy to be as husband and wife? Joi says, “I want people to value and want marriage. To see us and see that it’s worth it and see that marriage is a great thing.” Tristan adds, “We want to inspire folks to be

married. I think if we can do our part for the Kingdom, it would be that. Anything that comes there after is just icing on the cake. Because only what you do for Christ will last.”

JW: For me, I feel like Black people have to work so hard just to get the bare minimum. We have to do twice [as much] just to get the floor. And I think Black love is a rebel response—it’s revolutionary. It’s like your response to the man. It's your conquering response that guarantees that you get to win in this life.

TW: Black love is an act of charismatic conviction. There’s hope here. You have to believe in it. There’s what the world says and what the Kingdom says, and the gap in between is the belief. And because it’s an action, you can see it, you can witness it, you can experience it, and it’s unforgettable. When Black people love you, you feel like there ain’t nothing in the world that you can’t do. The opposite of love isn’t hate, it's selfishness. Love is about security and the ability to be able to give and share. It doesn’t mean you don’t have needs, but that I’m going to go before you all the days of my life, all because I love you.

KL: For the Wilkersons, Black love and its effect is beauty defined. The Black Love Effect is passion, pursuit, and purpose. It’s a response to not anyone or anything else but itself. It answers to no one but its participants because there’s no reason to answer to anyone else. It’s God just as much as it is flawed. It’s poised just as much as it is wild and unchained. It’s patient just as much as it is ever-evolving. And in that sense of dichotomy, there is a legacy to be carried by all of its descendents to grab onto and run with to truly be free at last.

We wish Joi and Tristan a lifetime of love andhappinesstogether!

RITA AND THEO SMITH Keeping the Love and Romance Alive

For the Smiths, what began as a teenage crush has evolved into a love that has withstood the test of time. High school sweethearts Rita Smith and Theodore Smith Sr. met at just 14 and 17 years old, and went viral after their TikTok videos offered a glimpse inside their love life. The pair, who have been married over four decades, share their wisdom with Bridal Suite member Neshaszda Z. on learning how to compromise, keeping the spark alive, and communicating well.

Theodore recalls knowing there was something extra special about Rita from the moment he first met her. “We were neighbors actually, living just a few houses down from each other on the same street. I remember seeing her walking by and finally building up the courage to ask for her phone number.” Four years later, the young couple tied the knot on Valentine’s Day.

Their journey has not always been easy though as they have had their fair share of disagreements, and have learned to make compromises. Rita shares, “There was a time when I struggled with budgeting and would often spend recklessly, particularly on our children. My husband, however, was excellent at managing our finances. One day, he asked for my checkbook, and without hesitation, I handed it over. Overtime, he returned the checkbook to me, but not without teaching me how to manage money better. He never made me feel bad about my mistakes, but through his patience and wisdom, I learned an important lesson in responsibility and compromise, and it ultimately strengthened our union.”

When asked what their secret is to staying connected, the Smiths agree that it starts with a commitment to keeping God at the center of their relationship and keeping the lines of communication open. It is what has allowed them to weather every storm that came their way. “We pray together, listen to understand each other, and openly discuss everything.” The couple, who has gained popularity for not being shy about their love life, also revealed that it began on their wedding day. “Role playing was a first for the both of us. I walked into the room in a powder blue silk robe for him to unbutton. We laughed and had so much fun, and it’s been on ever since.”

With four decades of marriage so far, Rita and Theo’s advice to couples just starting their married life together is “to pray for and with each other about everything, set goals together, and make sure you are aligned in your vision for the future. Compliment each other often, and make an effort to support each other in every way. Keep the spark alive by doing things to keep the relationship spicy. Also, protect your marriage by keeping others, including family, out of it.”

The Smiths’ timeless love story serves as an inspiration for many, demonstrating that love can overcome even in the face of life's complexities. Since their first viral video in 2023, Rita has started a lingerie line called Kitty Wiggle Collection and the couple published their first book together called “Love Can’t Wait.”

VOW RENEWAL

VANESSA & MITCH BOUIE

A Love Built on Friendship and Faith

For Vanessa and Mitch Bouie, love isn’t just about romance—it’s about genuine friendship, unwavering partnership, and shared dreams. Married for a decade, this entrepreneurial couple has built a thriving life together, balancing marriage, parenthood, and business with grace. From a courthouse ceremony to a decade-long journey toward their dream wedding, their story is a testament to love, resilience, and unwavering support.

A Marriage Rooted in

Friendship

When asked about the secret to maintaining a healthy and happy marriage, Vanessa doesn’t hesitate:

"It comes down to the fact that we don’t just love each other—we actually like each other. You really have to be friends at the core—like real friends who can just hang, laugh, and genuinely enjoy being around each other. I’m so thankful I can honestly say I married my best friend."

This foundation of friendship has been their anchor, allowing them to weather challenges and celebrate victories as a team.

Keeping the Romance Alive

Even after 14 years together, Vanessa and Mitch never stop dating. Prioritizing quality time is a must in their relationship.

"For us, it’s all about prioritizing quality time, whether it’s a real date night or just making cocktails and having movie night at home after the kids are asleep. After 14 years together, we have never stopped dating, and that’s what I think keeps everything fresh."

Their approach to love is simple but powerful— intentionally making time for each other, no matter how busy life gets.

Turning Challenges into Triumphs

One of the most defining moments of their marriage came in their very first year—becoming parents. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, they saw it as an opportunity to strengthen their bond.

"Becoming parents in our first year of marriage proved how strong we were as a team. Our greatest success is just the life we’ve built together—building this family and working side by side in business. One of the most rewarding parts of this journey has been showing our boys what determination and teamwork can achieve."

That teamwork has been evident in their entrepreneurial journey, particularly with Fancy Homebody, Vanessa’s lifestyle brand.

"From packing orders together for Fancy Homebody in our dining room to now operating out of a 7,000-squarefoot warehouse, they’ve witnessed the entire process. We took a leap of faith, both of us emptying our 401(k)s and savings accounts to go all in on my vision for the brand. The support and partnership have been instrumental in making our dreams a reality."

A Love Story 10 Years in the Making

Vanessa and Mitch’s love story began with a simple courthouse wedding in 2014. While they always dreamed of a grand celebration, life’s priorities—family, career, and their growing businesses—took center stage. Finally, a decade later, they had the wedding they had always envisioned, this time with their two sons proudly standing by their side.

Their journey, filled with faith, perseverance, and deep affection, proves that true love isn’t about how big the wedding is—it’s about the life you build together afterward.

CIEARA AND TERRELL PETTUS NEW BEGINNINGS Love Strengthened by Faith and Devotion

For Terrell and Cieara Pettus, love has always been a journey of faith, friendship, and unwavering commitment. Their story is not just about romance— it's about partnership, perseverance, and a belief that true love requires a foundation built on something greater than themselves.

When they exchanged vows, they embraced a simple yet profound truth: it takes three to make two become one—God, Terrell, and Cieara. This principle has guided them through life’s highs and lows, shaping a marriage that continues to thrive.

Keeping Love Alive Through Laughter and Intentionality

Romance for the Pettuses isn’t found in grand gestures alone, but in the small, everyday moments that strengthen their bond. “We keep our relationship fun,” Cieara shares. “We laugh, joke around, and can be extremely playful, which keeps our relationship and friendship strong.”

They’ve also learned that intentionality is key. Setting aside time for date nights—whether a fancy night out or a quiet evening together—gives them space to nurture their connection, hold meaningful conversations, and even tackle tough topics as a team. A Test of Faith and a Testament to Resilience

Shortly after their wedding, Terrell and Cieara made a

bold move, leaving their home state of Indiana to start anew in Birmingham, Alabama. The decision was filled with excitement, yet tinged with uncertainty. With no family or friends nearby, they leaned on their faith for direction.

But their first year of marriage tested them in ways they never expected. “We lost everything,” Cieara recalls. The weight of their struggles could have broken them, but instead, they found strength in their unity. “God was building us and our character collectively, and today we can say He has restored us with so much more.”

Through it all, their love endured—not as a passive emotion, but as an active commitment to stand together, no matter the storm.

A Love That Inspires

Today, Terrell and Cieara continue to inspire through their artistry and their love story. Terrell, a gifted singer and songwriter, and Cieara, a dancer, choreographer, and creative director, bring their passion to both their work and their marriage.

As they look ahead, their story remains a testament to faith, resilience, and the power of love that stands the test of time.

DESTINATION WEDDINGS:

Many of us have dreamed about our weddings since childhood. We imagine who we will marry and where we will celebrate. With 25% of weddings in the US being destination weddings, you may encounter a multitude of voices and opinions trying to guide you to various locations. However, this moment is ultimately about you and your partner.

Planning a destination wedding offers an extraordinary and memorable experience that stands apart from traditional hometown ceremonies. Destination weddings give couples the chance to merge their nuptials with a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience. Choosing the right destination is essential, as these weddings often provide breathtaking backdrops that enhance the ambiance of your special day. The most popular wedding destinations include Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast in Italy, Santorini in Greece, Maui in Hawaii, Paris in France, as well as Cabo San Lucas, Cancun, and Riviera Maya in Mexico. Personalization is crucial—every detail should reflect the couple’s tastes and preferences, creating a truly bespoke experience for family and friends.

Yet, planning a wedding from afar involves challenges. Coordinating with vendors, navigating legal requirements, and ensuring timely communication can be complex. Planning a destination wedding requires a careful balance of logistics, creativity, and a deep understanding of what makes each couple's love story one of a kind.

A destination wedding is more than just a ceremony; it’s a multi-day celebration that sets it apart from traditional weddings. From welcome cocktails to adventurous excursions to a farewell brunch, you can design itineraries that immerse guests in the local culture and charm. Hiring an experienced destination planner can help ensure your in-laws connect with their flights, your guests are informed of lastminute changes, and the venue offers the best value for your money.

It's also important to acknowledge guest dynamics. The average number of attendees at destination weddings typically ranges from 30 to 100. This intimate size allows couples to celebrate with their guests, while creating a realistic budget for the wedding. Remember that your currency may not go as far in some parts of the world, so it's vital to take a close look at the budget to determine which expenses the couple will cover and what costs will fall to the guests. Additionally, some locations may not be convenient for older guests or those with mobility issues. You should also understand that travel and hotel accommodation expenses can be significant for attendees, potentially limiting attendance to those who are most important to you and reducing pressure to invite distant acquaintances or obligatory guests.

Planning a wedding in a different city or country presents unique challenges. Hiring a destination expert delivers unparalleled advantages. Their extensive experience allows them to navigate complex paperwork efficiently, and their vast network of resources and contacts ensures that you receive the best possible support.

Ultimately, a destination wedding offers a combination of adventure, romance, and personalization that can make your special day truly extraordinary.
