BRIDE
FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
DEAR BRIDES, Congratulations on your engagement! Love is in the air, and the world is now open. We’re celebrating 25 years in business this year! The Biden Administration announced it will declare an end to the Covid-19 public health emergency on May 11, 2023. We will no longer be in a pandemic, and it’s happening just in time for the wedding season and a year of celebrating a milestone in business. I am happy and excited for you to begin the next chapter on your journey to the aisle. Before you know it, you will be celebrating your first anniversary like actress Raven Goodwin, who celebrated one year of marriage to Wiley Battle last October. We featured the couple’s newlywed love story in the last issue of Black Bride Magazine, and we are now celebrating their one-year anniversary as our cover bride and groom. Raven sat down with writer Kennedi Leshea for a candid conversation to share what she’s gleaned along the way about marriage, her career, and herself. As you begin the planning process for your big day, I ask you to consider planning in a different way. We are blessed to have made it through the pandemic. Think about how your wedding will convey the life and love between you and your partner. Envision how you can truly make the day a day filled with memories and special moments for your family and friends.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT HAIR Style FOR YOUR WEDDING DRESS BY KIYAH WRIGHT
A
fter you choose your wedding dress, the next thing to consider is your hair and makeup. Sometimes brides have a theme in mind, but as a hairstylist, I always like to let the dress inspire the bride’s glam. Plus, veils and hair accessories like broaches have an impact, too. Below, I’m sharing my top tips to prepare to work with your hairstylist artists from your first consultation all the way through your wedding day. THE CONSULTATION
3. Are you wearing a veil, hair accessories, or both?
When you first meet with your hairstylist, these are the questions you should be prepared to ask and get answers for:
Most often, brides keep their wedding veils on through their photos and ceremonies and then take them off to dance during their receptions. You’ll want to consider if you want to do a different look once you remove your veil. Maybe that means letting hair accessories that you’re wearing underneath your veil shine or maybe that means adding accessories to create a new look. Whatever you decide, make sure you order your hair accessories well in advance to ensure they get to you on time.
1. Will the hairstyle I like work with my dress? Dress styles and necklines definitely impact which hairstyles will pair well with your overall look, so make sure to bring a photo of your dress with you to your appointment. 2. What time is the wedding? Even though you might get ready in the morning, your wedding ceremony might not happen until the evening. If your wedding will be a full day (most are!), you can start to determine the maintenance of the hair and style. Plus, you can decide if you will need a stylist to touch you up, if the style can work from day-tonight, or if you want to change your look throughout the day. 10
BLAC K BRI DE. C OM
4. Do you need a ‘Do and Go’ Stylist or a stylist to stay all day through photos? This is something to consider because your hair and makeup matter, especially for your pictures and video. This typically relates to your budget, so be sure to talk to your hairstylist about a half-day rate or “do and go” rate. Be sure to decide the most affordable option for you.
5. Is a prep day needed?
Over Face Veil (Blusher Veil, Elbow Veil):
Because of the limited time the day-of, you and your bridesmaids may need a prep day. The day of the wedding can be a bit stressful, and time restraints don’t help. You may want a situation where on the day-of the wedding the hair is halfway done, and only styling or adding hair is needed. No matter what you choose, you want to make sure the hair is fresh.
For a veil that falls over the face, the best hairstyles are those that keep the hair long, like half-up half-down styles. They add a little drama, which is beautiful and fun.
THE WEDDING GOWN
These types of veils are typically clipped into the hair, so the hairstyles that work best for this look are updos that allow the stylist to get creative with the front of the hair or even add curls to the back of the hair. Sometimes, a ponytail that sits up high enough under the veil so you can see it when looking at the bride from the front is nice too because it helps to highlight the bride’s face.
Your hair is the spin-off of your wedding gown and dictates what hair accessories you use on your wedding day. Once you know what your wedding gown looks like and whether you will be wearing a veil, you’ll be able to choose the appropriate hairstyle for your wedding day. To begin building the hairstyle, you need to know what accessories to use. From hair extensions to hair broaches and hair accessories, everything that is part of the hair needs to compliment the veil and neckline of the dress. THE VEIL There are a few types of veils, and the veil and the neckline of the dress determine what hairstyle is best for your wedding. By looking at these two elements, I can determine if the bride should wear her hair on her face, off her face, in an up-do, half-up half-down, or fully down. Because not every hairstyle works with every veil, below I’m explaining the most common types of veils and which hairstyles look best with each one. Short Veils (Birdcage Veil, Flyaway Veil): The best hairstyles for shorter veils are up-dos. Because the veil is shorter, my preference is something that sweeps over the face or frames the face and leaves the neckline open all the way around.
Back Veil (Fingertip Veil, Ballet Veil, Chapel Veil, Cathedral Veil):
Hair Accessories (Broach): If you don’t wear a veil and choose to incorporate hair accessories instead, think about smoothing the sides of the hair and adding broaches or hair accessories for some hair decor. Sometimes simpler is better. This is also a look you can create once you remove your veil. When choosing the right hairstyle for your wedding gown, use these tips as a guide so that you can look and feel your best for your big day. BRIDAL
Beauty
MUST-HAVES BY B. GANDY
O
nce upon a time, the “traditional” wedding season was during the spring and summer months. Couples loved getting married when the weather was warm and the flowers were blooming! Nowadays, that couldn't be further from the truth. Most wedding professionals report that September through November are the busiest months of the year! And not to be biased but as a Libra Queen with an October anniversary, I truly find that this time of year reigns supreme (It had to be said ha-ha).
14
BLAC K BRI DE . C OM
There are quite a few pros to getting married during this time of the year. If you live somewhere that is unbearably hot like Atlanta, Georgia, then of course cooler temps rank high on that list. But even though the weather is more favorable, you don’t typically find tons of beauty related content for fall and winter brides. So, if you are a fall or winter bride and want to look and feel absolutely stunning on your wedding day, keep reading!
SKIN PREP 101
We all know that our skin is drier during the colder months, so it’s really important to give your skin some TLC before your big day! Here are a few of my favorite products to keep your skin soft and supple for your wedding day:
FACE MASK: Tatcha Luminous Deep Hydration Lifting Mask I love applying sheet masks on my brides on their wedding days year-round. But when the air gets drier, I look for products that provide an extra layer of moisture to create a radiant glow, despite the dropped temps. BODY CREAM: Fenty Butta Drop Whipped Oil Body Cream I can't get enough of this stuff! I think it’s worth every penny, and I even keep it in my professional makeup kit for my brides to ensure that their exposed skin is catered to. It doesn't have a strong scent, which is perfect for people with sensitive skin. It
also absorbs quickly, leaving your skin glowing and radiant. BODY OIL: Lumi Skin Co. Luxe Body Oil If you want to smell amazing and nourish your skin, look no further. This black female-owned brand has been a favorite of mine for years. I love it so much that I gift a bottle of this to my brides to thank them for their trust and business. My skin just feels so soft and smooth applying this, and it smells divine!! (My favorite scent is Spoiled Royal.) LIP CONDITIONER: Laniege Lip Sleeping Mask Anyone who has sat in my chair knows I always keep Laniege Lip Sleeping Mask on hand! While it’s a great product to apply at night before bed, it also makes a great winter lip balm due to its thick consistency and moisturizing properties. No chapped, cracked, or rough lips for the wedding day!

THE DARKER THE BERRY? OR WHATEVER THEY SAID. There is no denying the sexy, show-stopping effect that a deep-colored lip has on people. If you were ever considering a darker lip for your wedding day, this is a perfect time because berry stained lips are all the rave! One of the all-time favorites that I feel is universally flattering is The Lip Bar’s “Bawse Lady”. This deep, sultry red is the long-wearing, transfer-proof, lightweight lip color you need for your wedding day. If you aren’t ready to commit to a darker lip for the ceremony, save it for your reception! It will elevate your look just enough for the evening
SIGNATURE SCENT? YES, PLEASE! When thinking about your wedding, your style, and your look, don't forget to consider your fragrance for the day! While your scent can't be seen, it can be felt! Fragrances can help you to boost your confidence and leave a lasting impression. Here are three of my favorite wedding day scents for the fall and winter: Killian Angel’s Share: She’s a sweet, warm, boozy number that will have people hypnotized! Not your “traditional” floral wedding scent, but absolutely an amazing alternative for the bride that wants to turn heads! 16
BLAC K BRI DE. C OM
Oriana Parfums de Marly: This musky, sweet, sexy floral is perfect for this season. Although this scent wears well in the spring and summer, I feel the notes carry differently in the cooler air. Not to mention, the hot pink bottle is to die for and will photograph beautifully among your details. Xerjoff Erba Pura: Okay, here’s a secret: If you love Baccarat Rouge but don't want to smell like everyone else, this is your scent! Talk about a luxurious scent story! Erba Pura is soft and inviting, yet somewhat mysterious. I feel like this scent is perfect year-round, but it wears exceptionally well in the fall and winter.
MORE ACTUALLY IS MORE I know we are all used to the “less is more” philosophy when it comes to beauty principles. The trends absolutely tend to lean more “glam” in the fall and winter for obvious reasons, like the fact that it’s not 500 degrees outside. This means makeup stays in place longer, curls hold better, and no one is turning into a sweat puddle during the ceremony! This fall and winter, expect to see more sultry eyes, flawless photo-ready skin, and super-polished hair. Think glamorous waves and up-dos! Honestly, when else are you going to be able to just go all out? I say go for it! I hope these products and trends I love inspire you as you decide which products to use for your skincare, makeup, and fragrance for your fall or winter wedding. Above all, I can’t wait to see all the brides saying “I Do” this season!

Hone in on Your Body Goals: How to Set Realistic and Attainable Goals BY TONEKA ROYAL
W
e all have our dream body goals, but how do you refine them to ensure they’re achievable? Honing in on your intentions can help you to pick something attainable and motivating to work toward, even when life gets in the way. Below are my best tips for creating thoughtful fitness goals!
Don’t Go Goal Crazy It’s tempting to try and enact all of your body goals, like improving your sleep, cutting back on sugar, and going to the gym, simultaneously. But tackling all of those goals at once can feel overwhelming. So, pick just one goal to focus on rather than many.
18
BLAC K BRI DE . C OM
Living in wellness is a lifestyle.
Understand What Drives You Do you want to get in shape to walk down the aisle, or do you want to clean up your diet to combat health concerns? There are many motivating factors when it comes to body goals, and focusing on meaningful reasons can push you to keep showing up for yourself day after day.
Invest in a Personal Trainer and Nutritionist Knowing what to eat and how to train in the gym can feel overwhelming. A personal trainer and nutritionist can help you take the guessing game out of everything and give you a personalized program that is safe and effective for you. Remember, preparation and setting a foundation is key to your success.
Approach It the Right Way Whether you want to run a mile or get a solid eight hours of sleep every night, it’s essential to approach your goals holistically. A diet laden with caffeine and sugar isn’t conducive to restful sleep, and it won’t sustain you on a run. While goal-specific training is important, it’s important to not overlook the other aspects of your health.
Embrace Flexibility I’ve highlighted the importance of choosing a specific, measurable, and attainable goal. However, that doesn’t mean it can’t change slightly to reflect your fitness journey. As you progress, you may find you initially set the bar too low or too high. If necessary, allow yourself to flex and alter your goals and definitions.

anesia and Stanley’s love story began two years ago at a cybersecurity professional training institute. He was the teacher, and she was the student. They kept it professional at first, but they soon found themselves asking each other questions about life and love. After Vanesia revealed her feelings to Stanley, their relationship evolved into something magical. There were ups and downs, many long conversations, and even some storms during their three years of dating that led to their decision to soar together forever. See more from their stunning engagement session captured by Santorini Dress. ENGAGEMENT STORY: Stanley began preparing for the proposal in March 2022 and initiated the ring shopping process. Then he started sharing his engagement plan with his friends and family. On July 30, 2022, they went out to celebrate Vanesia’s birthday along with their friends and family. Towards the end of the dinner, Vanesia was asked to give a speech and Stanley to follow (part of the arranged plan with my friends). During Stanley’s speech, he started talking about the journey they have

had so far in their relationship. Then he said, “There’s no better time than now to tell you that I love you, and I’m ready to spend the rest of my life with you.” Stanley popped the question, and Vanesia said,“Yes, I will marry you.” They celebrated the rest of the night with their loved ones. FOR THE GROOM: WALK US THROUGH THE BEHIND THE SCENES OF CREATING THIS SPECIAL DAY: After deciding that it was time to take the next step in our relationship, I began ring shopping. Her mom and dad already loved and welcomed me, so I didn’t want to inform them to spoil the surprise and excitement. At the same time, I began talking with my mom, older siblings, and closest friends on what I wanted this day to look like. We all agreed on a birthday dinner at a restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland called The Bygone. We came up with a plan of asking Vanesia to give a speech, and I would follow and use that opportunity to pop the question at the end of my speech.

ristian and Harold’s love story began in November 2016 at a popular live music venue in Atlanta called Whisky Mistress. It was Harold’s event, and the two found out they had mutual friends. After being introduced to each other, they exchanged phone numbers but didn’t reconnect until a couple of months later. Six years later, Tristian and Harold are preparing to enter a new chapter in their lives as husband and wife. Read more details on their love story and get inspired by their Miami engagement session, captured by Travis Daniels Photography.

ENGAGEMENT STORY: Our engagement happened on New Year’s Eve 2021 in St John, USVI. It was a huge surprise to Tristian because we were there to celebrate the new year and the eight year wedding anniversary and new engagement of two other couples. FOR THE GROOM: WALK US THROUGH THE BEHIND THE SCENES OF CREATING THIS SPECIAL DAY:
My original plan was to propose in Cabo; however, we had to change our plans unexpectedly and went to the U.S. Virgin Islands instead. We literally booked the flight and hotel on December 29 and left the next morning! My original plan always included proposing at midnight, but everything closed in St. John at 10 p.m. I had to propose wherever we were at midnight, which ended up being in our hotel room with our friends. I wish the circumstances had worked out in a more grand fashion, but I was keen on the symbolism of leaving my girlfriend in 2021 and walking into the new year with my wifeto-be. WERE THERE ANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS DURING THE SHOOT? In typical South Florida fashion, it rained a lot the night before. Tristian planned on wearing her natural hair pressed out, but her hairstylist for the shoot asked her to wear her hair curly instead. As we were headed to the shoot, it began to rain, and we waited in our photographer Travis’s car praying we would get the shoot done in the time frame allotted. After a while, it stopped, and it ended up being just perfect. BLACK BR IDE .C OM

iamond and Jyron met on December 3, 2016. Summer, who is a close friend of Jyron and line sister of Diamond, decided to play matchmaker before the couple met. Jyron’s interest was piqued, but Diamond was hesitant. A few weeks later, the two were at an Alpha party where Jyron decided to make his move. After introducing himself to Diamond and having some casual conversation, they exchanged numbers. Over the next four months, they got to know each other better, and on April 29, Jyron led the charge, and they made it official. See more from their sultry engagement session, captured by Majore Photography. ENGAGEMENT STORY: After about five years of dating, Jyron felt it was time to make the next step in their relationship. He began preparing for the proposal in December 2021 and initiated the ring shopping process. In January, Jyron shared with Diamond that his family was planning to have a brunch celebration for his birthday. On March 12, 2022, Diamond walked into Jyron’s “birthday brunch” to
see several familiar faces. She was initially confused but quickly realized it was a proposal. Jyron asked the big question and Diamond said, “Of course.” They partied the rest of the day away with their loved ones in true Diamond and Jyron fashion. FOR THE GROOM: WALK US THROUGH THE BEHIND THE SCENES OF CREATING THIS SPECIAL DAY: After deciding that it was time to take the next step in our relationship, I began ring shopping. I then reached out to Diamond’s parents to receive their blessing. At that same time, I began talking with my mom and aunt on what I wanted this day to look like. Diamond and I both enjoy brunch and bottomless mimosas, so I knew I wanted to incorporate that into the day. I gave my aunt, of Prelude Events Studio, the small details, and she ran with it. Once everyone was informed, the hardest part was keeping it a secret. We managed to make it to the day without her being 100% certain that it was happening.

imberly and Gregory’s love story is like a page from a romantic comedy script! In 2016, they were strategically paired together in a mutual friend’s wedding party. At first, they were both a little leery of the idea of being "hooked up," as friends playing Cupid could present some challenges. However, Kimberly and Gregory connected at the rehearsal brunch and felt as though they had been friends for a long time. Since July 2016, the couple endured a long-distance relationship, supported each other during some tough life events, and celebrated big wins. See more from their gorgeous engagement session, captured by Wooten Photography. ENGAGEMENT STORY:
Greg typically surprises me for my birthday with a getaway, but 2020 was not an ordinary year. It was also a bittersweet celebration as my beloved Grandma Pauline's funeral was the day before my birthday. However, Greg made it special with a romantic dinner and gifts throughout the day. The next morning, he asked me if I was ready to receive my birthday present.
It was a note that read, “You chose poorly, you get nothing.” After I finished laughing hysterically, he dropped to one knee, presented a stunningly beautiful ring, and asked me to marry him. I said in great surprise (and tears), "Are you serious? Absolutely!" It was another unforgettable and special birthday. WERE THERE ANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS DURING THE SHOOT?
From the fountain to the gardens, and the archways and columns, the setting is stunning with so many picturesque areas on the grounds. In addition to recommending this fantastic backdrop for our engagement shoot, our photographer, JoAnn from Wooten Photography, made us feel so relaxed with her lively approach. n 2013, it was love at first sight for Malcolm when Brema caught his eye on the first day of training at work. Following several weeks of training, Malcolm requested the same shift as Brema. The two naturally got closer after his request was granted. It wasn't until Brema quit to pursue another opportunity that the two started dating. They became official in 2014, and now they are preparing to become husband and wife! ENGAGEMENT STORY:
For my birthday, Malcolm took me out to dinner. I thought the night was over, but clearly I was mistaken. Once we finished dinner, Malcolm drove back to his parents’ house. I walked through the living area and towards the back door. To my surprise, the backyard had been decorated with candles, there was soft music playing, and our close family and friends were discreetly hiding on the other side. Once I opened the door and saw him standing there surrounded by heart-shaped candles, I knew immediately he was going to propose. FOR THE GROOM: WALK US THROUGH THE BEHIND THE SCENES OF CREATING THIS SPECIAL DAY:
I tried to follow instructions Brema gave me about her proposal expectations years back. I knew she wanted something small and intimate with our close family and friends. I wanted to take Brema to dinner for her birthday, but I wanted to propose in a more intimate setting as well. I ended up going to my mom and sisters for help with the setup because I knew I couldn’t be in two places at once. I wanted to surprise her with something romantic that she wouldn’t even expect. So to let her know there was more to come after dinner, her birthday card read “your birthday is just getting started, pack your bags once we get back home.” WERE THERE ANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS DURING THE SHOOT? The engagement photo shoot was when everything got real for us. We were overjoyed and approached every pose with love. There were times during the photo shoot where we had to stare at each other. There were several takes we had to do over because we couldn’t stop laughing and smiling at each other. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT YOUR WEDDING?

n 2017, after meeting at work, Gabrielle and Jarret became best friends and have been together ever since. Five years later, they are preparing to become husband and wife. They share more about their relationship:
“We have faced ups and downs, but just like photographs, we have developed from the negatives. We changed each other for the better. We pray for and with each other, and that is our greatest weapon.”
I was in total shock. I think my pain stopped completely at that moment. FOR THE GROOM: WALK US THROUGH THE BEHIND THE SCENES OF CREATING THIS SPECIAL DAY:
R
We knew we wanted fashion because our theme is New York Fashion Week/ The Met Gala. We searched high and low for different looks. Originally, our shoot was meant to be outside but that week the forecast said 90% rain. I rushed to look for indoor studios and found a place that turned out perfect.
ENGAGEMENT STORY:
WERE THERE ANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS DURING THE SHOOT?
ead more of their love story and check out their fashion-forward engagement session, captured by Second Shots Photography. Jarret had an elaborate proposal planned for Valentine’s Day, but I had been so sick while healing from a procedure and down because of it that he decided to do it while we were at home. It was perfect. I was in pain and crying. While I was sitting in a chair, he stooped down and said, “Baby, it's gonna be ok. You are going to heal, and the pain will be gone soon.” He then said, “Will you marry me?” I said, “Of course,” not knowing he was asking formally. He pulled out a beautiful ring that melted my heart and lifted my spirits.
The way we keep each other laughing is our biggest connection, and the shoot was so much fun because taking pictures is new for me. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT YOUR WEDDING? Marrying the man that God created for me. No one loves me more, prays for me more, supports me more, or respects me more than him. Marrying my partner in life is what I look forward to the most.

n May 2018, Anthony took a chance by sliding into Chelsea’s Instagram DMs, and she actually gave him the time of day (LOL). After exchanging numbers, they got to know each other through texts and phone calls up until their first date a week later. After four years together, the couple will be saying ‘I Do’ next year. Get inspired by their romantic engagement session, captured by Second Shots Photography. ENGAGEMENT STORY: The proposal took place at The Dallas Arboretum on May 30th, 2021. I remembered locations that we were enamored with and decided to go with the Pecan Parterre Garden. On the day of the proposal, I was so nervous; I wanted everything to go right. I told her that this anniversary would be a surprise. Because of Covid, we were limited on how many people we could have at the location, but I wanted to make sure her parents were there, along with my parents, close family, and friends. We walked up to the location, and the violinist started playing our song, while my friend started taking photographs. Then, Chelsea saw her parents, and she was in shock and awe.
I said, “Chelsea, you mean the world to me. Ever since the first day we met, God spoke to me and told me, ‘That is your wife.’ I can’t go another day with you just being my girlfriend; I want you to be my wife.” She said, YES! We then toasted with champagne and celebrated with our family and friends. FOR THE GROOM: WALK US THROUGH THE BEHIND THE SCENES OF CREATING THIS SPECIAL DAY: I tried to follow instructions Brema gave me about her proposal expectations years back. I knew she wanted something small and intimate with our close family and friends. I wanted to take Brema to dinner for her birthday, but I wanted to propose in a more intimate setting as well. PLANNING
How to Effortlessly Pose for Photos BY KHRYSTINA STEIB
A
s a wedding photographer, some of the most common things that I hear from new clients are “I don’t know how to pose”, “I am so awkward in front of the camera”, and “I am not a model, but I’ll try.” For some, getting in front of a camera can be intimidating. The best piece of advice I can give is to be yourself. You want your images to reflect who you are. Here are tips on how to get relaxed in front of the camera.
3.Poses vs. Prompts
1. Scout your photographer
Some of my favorite prompts are: • Twirl your dress around (clients usually laugh while doing this)
If you are someone who is naturally shy or doesn’t prefer static poses, hire a photographer that has more of a documentary or editorial style of shooting. Look at their website and Instagram, and see if most of the portraits are images where the client is looking directly into the camera and is posed “vs.” prompted. 2. Take photos with your photographer before your wedding date. Imagine a total stranger showing up on your wedding day and asking you to be comfortable while they take your photos. Doing a bridal session or engagement session will help to build the relationship between you and your photographer. Your day can go a lot smoother when your photographer knows your expectations before they arrive for your wedding. 50
BLAC K BRI DE . C OM
For me, this is one of the main ways to get authentic expressions and imagery that is unique to each client. Posing includes: “Stand there, put your hand here, lift your chin, and smile.” Then, the picture is taken. This is the most natural way to capture a photo.
•
Look down for me, then left, then right, and on the count of three look right into the lens.
•
Walking away from the camera
•
Walking to the camera looking off in all directions
This gives your photographer the perfect opportunity to take a variety of shots from different angles to get the right shots. The goal is to allow your personality to shine through. When clients tell me they are not models, I want them to understand that who they are is enough. Be yourself and enjoy this moment in your life.
"It’s all about you and not about trying to look like anyone else."

Wedding Floral Advice BY EILENA MERCIER-EHMANN
Photo Cred: Sheronda Seawright Photography
W
inter floral availability can vary, depending on where in the country or the world you plan on getting married. If you are considering a winter wedding and love the lush ballroom feel, roses and hydrangeas are always available for your floral designer to source during the winter and year-round. Both are sourced from countries in South America where they generally will have a warm climate. An additional short list of florals available includes tulips, carnations, anemones, ranunculus, and orchids. Carnations are making their way back into wedding florals, and some of the color varieties complement overall color palettes well. Plus, tulips can provide a clean and modern look for a wedding. Further, greenery and baby’s breath are popular right now and are readily available for your wedding. Dried florals by themselves or mixed with fresh flowers are a great alternative for a little something different for a winter wedding.
52
BLAC K BRI DE. C OM
Keep in mind, although peonies are beautiful, they generally are not available during the winter. If they are, the heads of the flowers are often smaller, and the price is higher than it is during the normal season. For areas where it is warm year-round, local flower farms are good options, and purchasing locally helps to support local small businesses. Couples that want to have the option of being sustainable go with local sources. Pricing can be different based on your look and the types of flowers you love. Valentine’s Day is in the winter, and red roses are common around that time. But if you want to use them in your wedding flowers, keep in mind that prices before, during, and immediately after the holiday are at least 3-4 times higher than normal. You do not have to stick with drab winter combinations for your florals. If you are not sure what would be best to use during your wedding, consult with your floral designer to see what options are available and within your budget. They are the experts in what can and cannot be sourced for your winter wedding, and they are there to help bring your vision to life.

espite being from the same hometown, Toccara and Darron did not officially meet until one random day in August 2013 in Huntersville, North Carolina. Toccara was new to the Charlotte region, working at the bar of the same local restaurant where Darron was out with friends. The two oblivious youngsters literally ran smack into each other. Our wedding was an amazing experience. We were able to spend time with all of our guests prior to the big day, as we had other events leading up to our wedding. Our most memorable moment would be our first look. Once I tapped Darron on his shoulder and when we made eye contact, it was a whirlwind of joy. WEDDING SONG, EXPLAIN CHOICE FOR SONG: In November 2021, we were in our hometown for a wedding and one morning Darron said, “Hey, you want to get married today?” My response was, “Yea, why not!” There was no ceremony involved, just a signing of papers. Later, we had dinner to celebrate and ended the night in a cigar lounge. “For the Love of You” by the Isley Brothers was the last song before the lounge closed that night, and it was playing when we had our first dance as husband and wife.

or Ivie and Chris, their love story was in the making years before they even met. When they were still living in Nigeria, Ivie’s mom and Chris’s dad knew each other before they immigrated to the U.S. Coincidentally, both sets of parents moved to Southern California and remained friends. However, Ivie and Chris didn’t see each other often growing up, and they didn’t talk to each other until the end of college. One day, at a New Year’s party, they ended up chatting for a while, hit it off, and became good friends! In 2017, the two officially became a couple and watched their love blossom for five years. See more from their nuptials with a modern luxe flair, captured by KimFilms Weddings. BRIEFLY TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING EXPERIENCE AND HOW THE BOTH OF YOU FELT ON YOUR BIG DAY. n 1996, Quinten and Alina crossed paths when they were just sixth graders at Lincoln Middle School in Greensboro, North Carolina. They had both recently relocated from different states and did not realize that this would be the beginning of a long-lasting friendship. After 24 years of supporting each other and watching each other grow, they made the decision to give love a try. This past April, Alina and Quinten tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony with classic modern touches. See more from their walk down the aisle, which was captured by Katrena Wize Artography. BRIEFLY TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING EXPERIENCE AND HOW THE BOTH OF YOU FELT ON YOUR BIG DAY. INCLUDE YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT. We were both very excited and nervous at the same time. Quinten’s most memorable moment was seeing his bride come down the aisle. While trying to hold back tears, he could recall all the moments leading up to that day.
Alina’s most memorable moment was walking down the aisle while watching the tears fall from her groom’s face, and realizing this is where her forever starts. WEDDING SONG, EXPLAIN CHOICE FOR SONG: We had two songs mixed for our wedding song: “You Are My Rock” by Beyonce and “Rock” by Plies. We wanted it to be a mixture of both our feelings and personalities. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS A MARRIED COUPLE? We are most looking forward to expanding our blended family and watching it grow. ADVICE FOR A BRIDE/GROOM ON THEIR WEDDING DAY: The wedding day goes by fast, so be sure to embrace the moments as they are happening.

anschy and Jehu met in 2019 on the online dating app, Hinge. Sanschy made the first move by messaging him, but when she did not get a response after three weeks she figured he was not interested. Jehu ended up messaging her and apologizing after realizing that he had overlooked the message and asked if they could set up a phone call that same night. From the first call, the two could not deny their immediate chemistry. After a month of long phone conversations, they finally met up in person on Jehu's birthday, July 13, and the rest is history! This past May, the couple became husband and wife in a classic, modern wedding ceremony captured by PD Photography. BRIEFLY TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING EXPERIENCE AND HOW THE BOTH OF YOU FELT ON YOUR BIG DAY. INCLUDE YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT. We really wanted to focus on what we wanted as far as creating a memorable experience for
us and our guests. For Jehu, his memorable moment was our first look. We also decided to share a dance to one of our favorite songs, “Kiss of Life” by Sade, after everyone left the reception. It was the seal of our day to lock in and enjoy what we just experienced. WEDDING SONG, EXPLAIN CHOICE FOR SONG: “Best Friend” by Hollywood Anderson. At the last minute, we decided to have a guitarist perform our wedding song. We both love music, especially live music. One of my best friends recommended Tim Timmons to perform. He was amazing! WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS A MARRIED COUPLE? Just living life together, building a legacy, starting a family, and serving our community, family, and friends the best way we can. ADVICE FOR A BRIDE/GROOM ON THEIR WEDDING DAY: Have people around who have the gift of keeping you calm. They will help recenter you when you get overwhelmed. We are Haitian, and it was important to share something from our culture.

n a cold winter evening in January, Sling and Rohan’s love for coffee brought them together. They met at a personal development workshop in Manhattan in New York City, and that evening they randomly bumped into each other outside while searching for coffee. The two struck up a conversation and continued to get to know each other as the weeks passed. Within a month, they were officially a couple. On their third anniversary, Rohan asked Sling to become his wife. Get inspired by the glamorous details of their wedding day in Jamaica, captured by YNOT iMages. BRIEFLY TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING EXPERIENCE AND HOW THE BOTH OF YOU FELT ON YOUR BIG DAY. INCLUDE YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT. Rohan felt calm, poised, and certain. Sling was excited, grateful, and determined to be present throughout every moment. The outpouring of
love and joy was palpable. The most memorable moments included Sling being walked down the aisle by both of her parents. Rohan stole the show with his spoken word wedding vows, which had the crowd in both tears of joy and tears of laughter. They also had a unity sand ceremony to symbolize their blended family becoming one. WEDDING SONG, EXPLAIN CHOICE FOR SONG: After being formally introduced as The Hales, Sling and Rohan performed a rendition of “All I Need” by Method Man and Mary J. Blige. The lyrics epitomize the essence of their love for one another. The song for their first dance was “A Starry Night in Apollo Bay” by RINI. It conveys the intimate connection, the shared commitment, and the deep love they feel for one another.

COVER STORY
our Love Story &
Raven Goodwin Wiley Battle
S
ince the young age of ten, Raven Goodwin has lit up our TV and movie screens as various archetypes of what bold and beautiful Black women and young girls can and should look like. From her first taste of mainstream success in her role as the sassy and supportive best friend Ivy Wentz on the hit Disney Channel show, “Good Luck, Charlie,” to her initial induction into all-around acclaim in her role as Neicy in the widely praised BET drama “Being Mary Jane,” Raven has consistently given us range and relatability. Goodwin’s career often involves portraying complex characters women of all walks of life can relate to, and she’s established herself as a true inspiration for the audience that grew up alongside her. Despite having achieved much success both personally and professionally, Raven still deals with comments from peers and friends who feel as though she’s “slept on” to which she replies, “Nobody’s sleeping on me. I’m not underrated. I am not an underdog; I am Raven Goodwin. My career is written. Whoever works with me is going to be extremely blessed as am I. And my career is forever.” As her career’s infinity has grown, Goodwin has also recently added wife and mother to her resumé’s long list. On October 29, 2021, Goodwin and her longtime beau, Wiley Battle, tied the knot with just each other and their daughter, Riley Rosa, in Santorini, Greece. Since her wedding day, Goodwin has learned much and evolved continuously, and she chatted with us to share what she’s gleaned along the way about marriage, her career, and herself.

"Some days I’m the woman of my dreams, and some days I’m like, “Okay, there’s room for improvement.” But I do see my growth, and I see my evolution—and I’m proud of that."
Kennedi LéShea: We have grown up watching you as an actor right in front of our eyes, but who is Raven Goodwin now? Raven Goodwin: I’m finally feeling like a woman. I’m finally coming into my own. I’m having those realizations. The filter is coming off a little bit, and I want to let the world know who I am. My voice is developing more. And now that I have more experiences like motherhood and travel, I am figuring out what I like and don’t like. I feel ready to launch something where my voice is at the forefront. So, I feel boisterous; I feel strong. I feel like my individuality, although I’m married, is at an all-time high—and I’m just ready to explore. KL: Prior to getting married and thinking of your first year of marriage at some point, how did you prepare to become the woman of your dreams? RG: I’m not the woman of my dreams yet. I’m figuring out what I want to say and how to say it and what I want to be and who I want to be. Some days I’m the woman of my dreams, and some days I’m like, “Okay, there’s room for improvement.” But I do see my growth, and I see my evolution—and I’m proud of that. KL: Who were you when you met Wiley? RG: When I met him, I was a codependent. I was looking for another person to make me whole; I was looking for my other half. But when I met him, he kind of almost made me not want those things and to want myself even more. He was so into me, and he was so into himself at the same time. He was the example that those two things could work simultaneously—your self love and your love for someone else. KL: Did you all do marriage counseling prior to marriage?

RG: Yeah, we did. KL: Do you feel the counseling prepared you for marriage in terms of conflict, resolution, or anything else that comes up? RG: I see a therapist who is a woman, he sees a therapist who is a man, [and our therapists are] partners. Then we come together to see them together, and they’ve been amazing for us. We could have been more frequent in it. It was a little sporadic because we were both busy, but the sessions we did have allowed us to get to this point and get to one year of marriage. I definitely recommend counsel in any way, whether it’s professional or a couple that’s been together a long time. Keeping a
marriage together takes a village, support, and like minded people around you in order to succeed because it’s not easy. Go when it’s good, go when it gets in between, you should go when it’s bad—you should talk to someone at all times. KL: Does faith play a role in your marriage? If so, in what ways? RG: Absolutely. We pray every single day, and it’s been great. And there have been days where we’ve been busy, and we forget to come together. Those days don’t go as well as the days when we make it a priority, no matter how busy we are.

Photographer: PD Photography KL: Speaking of counseling and faith, those are often two things that show up as a reflection of who we truly are. Has marriage brought a sense of self-reflection to you? RG: Oh my god, yes. Marriage is a mirror, and so is motherhood. Anyone that sees you day in and day out is going to be a reflector of who you are—you learn more about your quirks. When you’re alone, you’re kind of stuck in your ways with no one to really comment on it. But my husband is very vocal. He’s gonna say how he feels. KL: What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your first year of marriage?
RG: I’ve learned to listen and to not say anything you can’t take back. If you can’t have a conversation at that moment, if you’re feeling fiery, and you’re not capable of having the conversation, have that conversation. Say, “This isn’t working for me. Let’s table this.” Then we’ll go play mini golf or we’ll go somewhere public where we can’t show out, where we have to keep it composed, where we have to keep it respectful. Let’s have a good time and a conversation. Arguing, disagreements—it’s inevitable. Keep it respectful, keep it loving. If you need to have a hard conversation, do something that will make it easy to have the difficult conversation.

KL: What’s the best advice you received about marriage that you actually use? RG: The best advice we’ve gotten about marriage is from our therapists, and they said it’s always easy to find fault or to feel like you want to go your separate ways when things aren’t going great. There are always going to be times when things don’t feel great or perfect, so it’s easy to say, “Well, maybe this isn’t what we’re meant to be doing.” But it’s easy to feel that way when you’re in that space. Pay attention to what you feel like when you’re not in that space. Focus on that. That’s helped us be a solution-based couple. KL: Your most memorable moment as a married couple so far? RG: When I knew this was it, I said, “I wanna go on a park date with you.” I made us sandwiches and the whole cute picnic basket thing, and we sat at Piedmont Park and talked for hours. We got an Uber back to my hotel because I was in Atlanta filming, and he started talking to our Uber driver. I could tell he really didn’t wanna talk, but Wiley kept being himself and talking to him. [Our Uber driver] said, “Well, to be honest with you, I don’t even really wanna be here anymore. Life is really getting tough for me; I’m really depressed.” We spoke life into him together and got his number and followed up with him a few weeks after that. I realized we can come together and make people feel better as a couple. That was really early on in our relationship, but I was like, “Okay, that’s definitely my husband.” KL: So, is that the goal for your marriage: To illuminate a path for others? RG: Always. He’s dynamic in his space of what he does career-wise, and I’m dynamic in my space. I noticed early on that a lot of people would call him for advice—he’s just that person. For me, a lot of people come to me for creative stuff. We both have different avenues people truly need us for. There have been times Wiley and I are hardcore beefing but we’ll have people over at the house. Then we realize again: “Yeah, this is what we do. We bring people together, and then they bring us together.” It’s just what we do. KL: What do you want your legacy to be as husband and wife?
RG: I want my kids and their kids to be in a position where they can choose anything it is they want to do. I’m all for finding a strength in someone and nurturing that. So, whatever that looks like. I want my legacy to be education, financial literacy, love, good nutrition—all the things that weren’t necessarily accessible to me growing up. That’s the legacy and the access I want to grant to my children and their children because that’s what we deserve. It was taken out of our community, but it’s so beautiful to see us empowered again. KL: You’ve talked a lot about identity. How do you embrace all of who you are without compromising any parts? RG: If I didn’t embrace it, I wouldn’t be authentic. If I said I was okay with just being Riley’s mom and Wiley’s wife, I’d be lying to myself and dishonoring myself. Because I know for sure— ever since I was a little girl—that my purpose is beyond even what I can fathom. I’m not a person that can be boxed or caged in by any means, title, or role. I would be lying if I said that was enough because it’s not. It’s just not completely fulfilling, and that’s okay. I don’t think my career is going to be completely fulfilling. Nothing fills my heart more than knowing I can do it all. KL: What’s next for you professionally? RG: There’s so much in store for me with my cooking, with Hattie [McDaniel]—just everything that I want to do, I can see it coming to fruition. I’m just really proud of where I’ve been. When it’s my time and I do have that run and it’s my season, I feel like I’ll be really, really prepared and really in a receiving mode. It’s going to be really beautiful, and I’m going to bring a lot of people with me. My friend told me, “I just think people are sleeping on you.” I said, “I don’t really like that.” I don’t think you can be slept on when your body of work makes people feel something. And if they’re sleeping on me, it’s because I haven’t had an awakening myself. I have to take accountability for my career. Nobody’s sleeping on me. I’m not underrated; I am not an underdog. I am Raven Goodwin. My career is written. Whoever works with me is going to be extremely blessed as am I. And my career is forever. BRIDE

OUR COVER STYLE
Inspiration
O
ur Winter '23 cover story celebrates the love of Raven Goodwin and Wiley Battle. It’s a full circle moment with the couple who shared their story with Black Bride Magazine as newlyweds and are now celebrating their one year anniversary as our cover bride and groom. As Raven’s stylist for the shoot, I wanted to create looks that mirrored her confidence and infectious personality. She’s an amazingly talented actor and vocalist. When thinking of how Raven pulls us in when in front of the camera, I was reminded of the magnetic essence of entertainment divas past. Thinking back to the fierce femininity and glamor of Old Hollywood’s Dianna Carrol and Ertha Kitt, to the eclectic energy of 70s soul with Donna Summers and Chaka Khan, these divas were part of a time when fashion was a prominent extension of star power and artistic identity. I could envision Raven embodying the undeniable iconic style of those who've paved the way for women entertainers today. In tandem with fashion, I also saw this cover story as an opportunity to amplify designers that truly cater to the curvy bride. As the fashion industry has yet to embrace size inclusivity, I felt it important to do the research to identify designers and boutiques that find value in ensuring women of all sizes are able to enjoy the experience of wearing a wedding gown without having to sacrifice the elements of luxury and fashion. I’m thankful to Raven for bringing this vision to life and being such an important part of this historic issue for Black Bride Magazine.

BB: So how did you and Alphonso meet? We all love a great love story. Darlene: I will say that Alphonso’s story of us is a little different from mine. He’d previously seen me in concert with Yolanda Adams and Kim Burrell in Atlanta, GA. One thing everyone that knows him knew is that he was not the kind of guy that would be in church, and not at a gospel concert. One of his friends was the promoter for the event, and she invited him to come out and enjoy a concert. He remembers what I wore that night, and he felt that something resonated with him when he heard my performance that night. Although we didn’t meet one another that evening, he didn’t forget my name, nor did he forget my face. But my short answer to how we met is that he literally showed up on my doorstep. About three or four months later, I had a viewing party at my home, and a mutual friend of ours invited him to stop by and network with other industry professionals that were in attendance. She intended for him to meet me. He arrived at my party, rang my doorbell, I opened the door and looked at him and said to myself, “Who in the world is this fine brother, and where did he come from?” I welcomed him into my home, and we were introduced to one another by two of our friends. One of my friends was the promoter who invited him to the concert a few months prior and the other is one that was in a fitness Bootcamp with me. Once we viewed the Premier, the party got started. The music, the laughs, and the fun began, and his countenance and presence were so calming and powerful. I kept sneak peeking at him and looking in at his eyes trying not to appear to be flirtatious. Then of course the smack-talking began, because everyone wanted to play spades. There was a very intense and important moment. I know how I get on the spades table, and I asked myself, "Now are you going to allow him to be your partner even if
he can't play?” He’s never admitted to this, but I believe he shared the same thought as I did because he and I are serious and skilled spades players. We aren't the type to teach while playing spades. This night as partners, we ran the table and won against any and everyone who dared to sit down with us. It was evident that we enjoyed one another. We exchanged numbers and stayed in touch. Turned out that he lived less than ten minutes from my house. At this moment in time, I was a new divorcee after being married for more than seventeen years. We stayed friends over the course of about five years. Then we somehow started noticing our chemistry and great company together, so we began exploring a dating journey. BB: How did you know your partner was the one? Darlene: Our chemistry is undeniable. After being friends for so long and then next stepping into the dating space, it occurred to me that our compatibility was unmatched. Even with opposing views, different approaches to beliefs, and different values, our love for each other was pure and solid. I could not see myself without him for the rest of my life. BB: Did you go through marriage counseling prior to marriage? Darlene: Alphonso and I hosted a month-long series of pre-marital counseling on our IG LIVE page, which consisted of the couples we respect who have been successful in marriage for ten years and above to give us advice on how to keep it successful. We had sessions on blending our families, joining our incomes, maintaining healthy boundaries, and caring for aging and elderly parents. This was what we considered pre-marital counseling from experts within our reach. BB: Are there goals that you and your husband have set for your marriage? Darlene: We have goals to show our kids and grandkids that love is possible, success is possible, and how to serve communities and families with a picture of hope and real love. BB: What’s your most memorable moment as a married couple so far? Darlene: We are a newlywed couple, so we are currently making memories — but the most exciting memory so far is our wedding. The memory of how gorgeous, bold, and extravagant our ceremony was with the closest loved
ones in our lives. Our family and friends are with us from all over the country. Dancing and eating and having the time of our lives with the people we love most. BB: What’s the best part about being a married couple? Darlene: We have a chance to be in one another's presence every day with support and love. BB: What’s the best advice you received about marriage that you use? Darlene: That respecting each other’s individuality is important to the bonding process. BB: What are some of the things you’re working on? Darlene: Well, I have to say that the Lord has truly blessed our 2022 year in a major way. My husband had three movies to release, and one of them was a Feature Film that hit #1 on Netflix with Gerard Butler called "Last Seen Alive". So, he will continue to pursue roles in his acting career as he is writing his own projects as well. Our family entertainment company ended the year strong with our Hip Hop Artist "Champp" winning the First Cyber Cypher on BeatStars, and we will continue to unveil him in the coming months. This year, I ended the year being inducted into the National Black Radio Hall of Fame, receiving an honorary Doctorate Degree of Divinity/Sacred Music Broadcasting, and I released my first R&B song internationally with Music Mogul Dallas Austin on his holiday compilation project called "And This Christmas." Our 2023 looks busy. I am going to explore the podcast space a bit. Alphonso and I are looking to release a book about our love journey from friendship to marriage with a five song EP. No, he doesn't sing, but he is a poet, and we are looking forward to sharing more of our creative work together. BB: What sage advice do you have for couples about marriage? Darlene: This may sound old-fashioned, but I suggest each couple live alone and establish themselves as a whole person mentally, financially, spiritually, and emotionally to the point that they feel well, productive, and accomplished before inviting someone to join them in their life journey. Because once you are sure of who you are, you can make better choices on who should be with you. BLACK BR IDE .C OM

Faith-filled Lessons of Love, Friendship & Family BY CHRISTINA AND STEPHON CHANEY
O
“We decided to honor God with our marriage from day one, and He has consistently blessed us ever since."
ver the past 7 years, we’ve learned that marriage is a journey! In the beginning, the focus was adjusting to married life with one another. This included prioritizing the spouse over everyone, improving communication, conflict resolution, finance management strategies, establishing healthy boundaries with friends and family, a healthy dose of sexual healing, family planning, etc. By the time we seemed to have things somewhat figured out, God had blessed us with THREE boys (ages 5, 4, and 2 now)! Finding balance in the midst of it all was absolutely challenging. But the result has been the unfolding of a life that is beautifully nuanced, and we both have matured in more ways than one.
We would not be where we are without the hand of God covering our marriage. Although we’ve experienced challenging seasons, we’ve always had an unwavering sense of peace. When the odds were against us, we always overcame. We decided to honor God with our marriage from day one, and He has consistently blessed us ever since. We would not be where we are—approaching 8 years of marriage— under our own power. So, the necessity of keeping God at the center of it all has been the ultimate lesson. We are grateful to have a fun, loving, and healthy marriage, and we look forward to exploring all this life has to offer “til death do us part”.
This roller coaster ride called marriage has absolutely had its ups and downs. We’ve endured financial hardships and financial increase. We experienced a miscarriage in 2019, and we were blessed to have a Covid baby in 2020. We suffered through the Covid related shutdowns in Los Angeles, and then relocated our entire family across the country to Atlanta. We were ordained as pastors at our home church, ONE LA, under the leadership of Pastors Touré Roberts and Sarah Jakes Roberts, and we are now launching a movement (ActivateAtl.org) in a new territory.
The Chaneys reside in Atlanta, Georgia with their three boys. Stephon Chaney is the Executive Pastor, Activate Ministries, Inc. (Activate ATL), an Enterprise Account Executive at BetterUp, and a part of the pastoral team at ONE | A Potter’s House Church. Christina Chaney is President of Activate Ministries, Inc. Devoted Dreamers BY TAMELA AND DEMARIO DAVIS
“We keep the family grounded with structure, routine, and being rooted in our faith.”
A
fter ten years of marriage and five children, Demario and Tamela Davis have navigated various seasons of their lives together. Currently, you can catch them in New Orleans, Louisiana where Demario is an NFL player for the Saints. The couple shares the lessons they have learned so far. The lesson we have learned about love and life is that it’s not going to always be filled with highs. Some days will be tougher than others, but it is important to have continuous honest and open dialogue. Nothing is off limits, and the ability to communicate those feelings has made Tamela and I stronger than ever. We keep the family grounded with structure, routine, and being rooted in our faith. It all begins with consistency and a relationship with God.
In addition to raising five beautiful children, Demario is an All-Pro linebacker for the New Orleans Saints. Tamela hosts cooking segments on New Orleans TV, and she writes a blog called the “F Word” about faith, family, and food. She also hosts the podcast “Tea with Tamela.” Together, the couple founded the Devoted Dreamers Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports student-athletes on their spiritual, athletic, and academic journeys. Beyond Perfection BY AALIYAH AND LOGAN JOHNSON
T
“One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned together is that love is not perfection. It is limitless and truly unconditional.”
o celebrate five years of marital bliss, Aaliyah and Logan decided to pose for a stylish photoshoot, which was captured by photographer Japhet Odigie of JAO Photography. They share some of their favorite moments from the shoot: "Because we didn’t have a traditional wedding, we didn’t have a chance to do the first look. This photoshoot gave us the opportunity to experience that priceless moment. That feeling was incredible and one we will never forget! "We met when we were teenagers, so we’ve had a lot of time to learn through love and life. One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned together is that love is not perfection. It is limitless and truly unconditional. Throughout the years, both of
us have evolved as individuals as well as a unit. With that, we’ve learned to love each other for the 'now' while leaving space to love each other without conditions for the growth and changes that life will bring. My husband is truly my best friend. We have learned that it is important to always hold on to the friend aspect of our relationship and never let that go." About the Johnsons: Logan is originally from Augusta, Georgia, and Aaliyah is from Los Angeles, California. The two met in 2015 when they were both in the military in Pensacola, Florida. The Johnsons have two beautiful children together. Connect with the Johnsons on Instagram: @li.vidaloca and @leauxjeaux.

TRAVEL
ANTIGUA & BARBUDA
Your Next Romantic Destination: Explore the most romantic destination in the Caribbean BY STEPHANIE KILSON-THOMAS We sat down with Shermain Jeremy of Antigua & Barbuda’s Tourism Board to learn more about Antigua and Barbuda as a romance destination for couples.
A
ntigua and Barbuda are truly gems of the Caribbean. Perfect for destination weddings, honeymoons, and romantic getaways, Antigua and Barbuda have received accolades that include Most Romantic Caribbean Destination and Sexiest Destination. There are plenty of reasons why Antigua and Barbuda are ranked among the top 10 honeymoon destinations. Shermain Jeremy, Special Projects and Events Manager and lead for romance and marketing efforts for the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, sheds light on the beautiful island and its accolades: “We are one country but two beautiful islands offering very, very, unique experiences. Antigua [the bigger island] obviously has more to do, more to see for brides and couples looking for the perfect destination wedding. Barbuda is a lot more exclusive, undeveloped. So, a couple planning something more exclusive—maybe an elopement or a romantic getaway—may want to consider Barbuda because it’s beautiful, exclusive, and difficult to get to.” Below are Jeremy’s recommendations for couples planning a trip to Antigua and Barbuda.

DESTINATION WEDDINGS What helps contribute to Antigua and Barbuda being an amazing destination wedding island are their locations for weddings. From resorts to beautiful beaches and other venues, Antigua offers something for every bride. Highly sought-after locations for destination weddings include Royalton Antigua Resort & Spa, Coco Bay Resort, Hermitage Bay, Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa, and Hammock Cove Resort. For those couples looking for off-resort destination weddings, Clarence House, an old plantation home with Nelson’s Dock Yard as your backdrop, is pretty popular on the island. On the island of Barbuda, Barbuda Bell is an eco-friendly resort. It’s the only resort on the island of Barbuda, and it’s very intimate and off the beaten path.

HONEYMOONS AND ROMANCE TRAVEL Most resorts in Antigua are adults only. This provides the perfect atmosphere for couples looking to enjoy their first trip as husband and wife, or couples looking to reconnect with one another in a beautiful location. While Royalton Antigua is a family friendly resort, it is the only resort on the island that offers over-water bungalows, which are adults only (Marriott will open its adults only Royalton CHIC Resort in Antigua in late 2023). Resorts such as Cocos Hotel, Coco Bay Resort, and Hammock Cove Resort & Spa offer rooms with private pools to enhance privacy and intimacy for couples. New to Antigua is Wild Lotus Glamping, which is extremely popular amongst couples looking for a romantic getaway.

DATE NIGHT Jeremy says there’s plenty to do in Antigua! Street food vendors and great food can be found on the island. She recommends Sheer Rocks at Coco Bay Resort with cabanas and private pools where you can have the ever-so-popular floating breakfast. Dine at popular spots like Beachlimerz, Jacqui O’s Beach House, Papa Zouk, Dennis Cocktail Bar & Restaurant, Anna’s on the Beach, and the island’s only steakhouse, Gather Steakhouse. Couples getting married, honeymooning, or just taking time for themselves will find everything they need in Antigua and Barbuda. The month of June is Romance Month on the islands, and it’s the perfect opportunity to visit one of the islands’ 365 beaches. With so much to do, it is a destination you will not regret!
