If you don’t have a 3D printer.

Don’t worry, you can still do the same projects as everyone else. BCA provides a 3D model upload and print facility. Submit your files online and we will 3D print a selection for your class.

If you want to invest in a 3D printer at your school, we can also recommend a 3D machine from one of the major manufacturers, complete with training.

Curriculum and course structure: At level 1, we introduce the basic principles of CAD and 3D printing before students design and 3D print their own creations. By Level 3, students will study the full range of Additive Manufacturing technologies including sintering and stereolithography, going beyond what’s possible with consumer grade 3D printers. Students will apply industry standard tools and software in challenging self-led research and design projects, supported by BCA.

INDUSTRY RELEVANT LEARNING OUTCOMES

COURSE SPECIFICATION BCA provide Additive Manufacturing QCF Awards at Levels 1, 2 and 3 LEVEL 1 AWARD (Approximately 10-14 guided learning hours): Level 1 builds basic knowledge and skills in 3D printing through engaging and hands-on mini projects suitable for beginners. Level 1 Award covers core parts of the UK National Curriculum specifications for Design and Technology.

TOPIC 1 4-6 Hours

3D PRINTING FUNDAMENTALS Learn how to create and prepare a 3D model for 3D printing using BCA provided design templates and files. Choose from a number of projects from jewellery to architecture.

Learning Outcomes: Foundations of technology, 3D printer settings, GCode and principles of Computer Numeric Control, 3D Design.

TOPIC 2 4-6 Hours

3D DESIGN AND PROTOTYPE Example Design Project – School Fair Fund Raising Design and produce a physical product for sale using CAD and 3D printing Learning Outcomes: Good disciplines when designing for 3D printing. Understand lines, surfaces and watertight surfaces for succesful 3D printing, creativity, enterprise.

TOPIC 3 1 Hour

ANALYSE AND REVIEW

Understanding how and when to use new technologies is a key skill. Students describe the possibilities and limitations of the design to 3D printing process.

Learning Outcomes: Critical evaluation, analysis

TOPIC 4 1 Hour

3D PRINTING FOR LOW VOLUME PRODUCTION Demonstration of mould making and casting using a 3D printed pattern.

Learning Outcomes: Manufacturing process, casting, pattern making and serial production.

LEVEL 2 AWARD (Approximately 18-30 guided learning hours): At Level 2, BCA offer students the chance to design and 3D print real life objects and products. Following a series of step-by-step technical tutorials, students are encouraged to explore and design their own products and apply 3D design and 3D printing skills independently.

TOPIC 1 4-6 Hours

3D CAD MODELLING Measure and model a USB cover using CAD. Learning outcomes: 3D modelling, precise CAD drawing and design, design for manufacture, parts and assemblies

TOPIC 2 2-4 Hours

GETTING BEST RESULTS FROM 3D PRINTING 3D print USB parts and assemble.

Learning outcomes: Relating 3D printer settings to build tolerances, feedback between design and manufacture.

TOPIC 3 6-8 Hours

3D DESIGN BRIEF: Example brief - design a custom USB holder Students respond independently to a design brief. They can either adapt the design from topics 1 and 2, or start an original design.

Learning outcomes: Sketching and modelling in 3D, applying skills independently, design and development, research, engineering.

TOPIC 4 2-4 Hours

PROJECT EVALUATION Students work iteratively between their CAD model and 3D printed product to ensure the final product or prototype is of high quality.

Learning outcomes: Iterative design, make and testing, analytical and evaluation skills.

TOPIC 5 2-4 Hours

CASTING: 3D PRINTING FOR MOULD MAKING Follow step-by-step guide to design a mould and cast a USB cover component.

Learning outcomes: Casting, moulding techniques, CAD for manufacture, manufacture tolerance, materials.

TOPIC 6 2-4 Hours

PROJECT PRESENTATION Students prepare information for downstream manufacture.

Present their project and gather feedback into a portfolio or report.

Learning outcomes: technical drawing standards, presentation skills, portfolio development.

LEVEL 3 AWARD (Approximately 50 guided learning hours): Level 3 prepares students for work in the 3D World by developing industry standard design skills, competencies and judgments. Students take on more complex projects and build an increasingly sophisticated model of a product’s design to manufacture life cycle.

TOPIC 1 6-8 Hours

ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES AND PROCESS BCA provides a selection of industry relevant case studies so students can work on more complex 3D models, projects, and Additive Manufacturing systems including sintering and stereolithography. Choose projects from product design, engineering, medicine, and fashion.

Learning outcomes: Analyse 3D models and Additive Manufacturing systems critically, 3D modelling, materials, engineering.

TOPIC 2 10-12 Hours

ADVANCED 3D MODELLING TECHNIQUES BCA offers a series of tutorials in advanced CAD, 3D scanning, digital clay modelling, and Additive Manufacturing operations.

Students choose their own area of interest and expertise to practice in preparation for individual design projects.

Learning outcomes: Spatial awareness, problem solving, CAD/CAM techniques and work flows, computer graphics, 3D geometries.

TOPIC 3 20-25 Hours

INDIVIDUAL DESIGN PROJECTS Students choose from project briefs supplied by BCA and create a physical 3D printed solution. From designing a custom prosthetic to working on a live collaborative project, BCA briefs get students to tackle real world challenges and push their own knowledge and skills.

TOPIC 4 3-5 Hours

PROJECT PRESENTATION AND REPORT Students at Level 3 should start to have a sophisticated understanding of where Additive Manufacturing can provide a compelling solution to a problem compared with traditional methods. Students record and present their learning from the Award and present to fellow students or industry professionals.

Level 3 is suitable as an Extended Project Qualification.

COURSE & SUPPORT FEES BCA provide Additive Manufacturing QCF Awards at Levels 1, 2 and 3

FOR STUDENTS: Students receive access to all learning content, tutorials, and extended exercises.

Student work is moderated by the school and

by BCA and, upon successful completion, will receive a QCF Award Certificate.

FOR TEACHERS: As part of BCA’s Additive Manufacturing Awards, teachers receive training to deliver all course content. This includes training in CAD and 3D printing. This is a one-off cost at the beginning of delivering a new Award.

As well as training, BCA provides teachers with full lesson plans, lesson handouts, evaluation toolkits, and curriculum support.
