At the time of this printing, we all have recently learned of the “Shelter in place” order. I hope that you are all staying healthy and finding new ways to connect with your loved ones during this very uncertain time. Instead of enjoying the usual pleasures of spring, I hope you are finding new great books to read, shows to binge watch, and new ways to work and stay busy. I also hope this magazine helps you feel connected to your neighborhood. Blackhawk Living is your neighborhood magazine, and in this issue we are pleased to introduce you to a long time Blackhawk Family, Emily Bach, Tom Moglia and their kids Danny and Melanie. They are a fixture in the Blackhawk community, and you will love their story. Please check all the Calendar of Events listings before you go, to make sure they haven’t been cancelled due to the Coronavirus precautions. I’m eager to hear from you and share your stories whether you have gardening or book tips, an adorable pet, an interesting adventure to share, a hobby, a recipe, a charity you’re involved with, or any other topic you think the Blackhawk neighbors would like to hear more about. I’m also looking for families to feature each month on the front cover. I believe that interesting stories don’t just come from celebrities, but from our own communities. Everyone has a story to tell, and I’d love it if you’d let me tell yours. Send your articles and photos to mscott@bestversionmedia.com

Resident Feature

Meet Tom, Emily, Melanie and Danny By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010

L

ittle did Emily know when she walked into Club Sport Gym to sign up for a gym membership in San Ramon over two decades ago, that she would be meeting her future husband and father of her children before she even set foot in the locker room. When Emily graduated from University of California, Irvine, she decided (with a little encouragement from her parents) to move back to the Bay Area. She ended up in the Canyon Lakes community in San Ramon. Both her parents and her older brother, David Bach, told her to join Club Sport of San Ramon because it would be a good place to meet people. This turned out to be one of the best decisions Emily ever made, because she met her future husband that day. Tom was in Sales and Management at Club Sport of San Ramon and helped Emily start her membership. Tom asked Emily out and the rest is history. They were married five years later in 1998 at the Claremont Country Club in Oakland. At their wedding, Emily’s father spoke and joked “I know we told you to join Club Sport so you could meet new people, but Emily – you did not have to marry the first man you met at the Club!” Emily was born in San Francisco. She lived in Oakland until she was five-years-old and then moved to Moraga where she graduated from Campolindo High School. She then went to college at University of California, Irvine and

graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. Tom was born in Oakland and went to Bishop O’Dowd High School. He then went to college at Diablo Valley College and California State University, Sacramento. After they were married, Emily and Tom began looking around San Ramon and Danville for a single family home when Emily’s mother told them about a house they might like in Blackhawk. Emily and Tom had not even considered Blackhawk, thinking it would be out of their price range; however, they went to look at the house and immediately fell in love. After going through some major hurdles and being outbid, they decided the house was not meant to be, but Emily says fate stepped in. “ As fate would have it, the other buyer fell through and the seller came back only two weeks before our wedding. The house was definitely meant to be and we lived in it for 12 years.” When they were ready to start a family, they realized they wanted a larger backyard for kids to play outside, so they again went on a search for another home, and, again, Emily’s mother, Bobbi Bach, found the house. She was walking her dog and saw a house that had just been put on the market that she thought would be perfect for her daughter’s family. Emily’s mother was right; they saw the house and fell in love with the backyard. Emily and Tom moved only a mile away to Deer Ridge Drive and have lived there since. Tom and Emily spent seven years traveling the world before deciding they were ready to have children. Unfortunately, Emily says getting pregnant was harder than they expected, “It took five years and lots of help from modern medicine to finally have our miracle babies. However, since we waited to have our children and it was a difficult journey, we have found that we really cherish each moment and are so thankful for the memories we create. Our children have made our lives so much more fun and fulfilling.” Emily had planned to go to Law School when she graduated from college. However, her father talked her into trying a finance internship. Emily was an Intern in Dean Witter’s Costa Mesa office for several months while she was going to college. “I took the internship to figure out if I enjoyed finance and by the end of the internship, I was hooked. I moved back to the East Bay after college, and Dean Witter hired me in their Concord office. I moved to the Orinda location when it opened in 1995 and have been there ever since. The company has changed its name several times over the past 27 years, but it is essentially the same firm,” says Emily. She is currently the Managing Director and Wealth Advisor with

Emily was recently selected by Barron’s Magazine as one of America’s 2019 “Top 100 Women Financial Advisors” for the 14th year in a row. In addition, Emily was ranked #31 in Working Women Magazine’s 2019 list of “Top Wealth Advisor Moms.” Emily says her favorite part of being a Financial Advisor is helping people achieve their financial goals. “It is fun to be an important part of my client’s lives. From hearing about their vacations, their children or grandkids, to making big purchases. As their Financial Advisor, you are involved in

Tom is currently retired and stays at home with their two children. Prior to retirement, Tom had a rewarding career in finance and tax services. After over twenty years in the business, Tom retired when they had their first child, Melanie. Emily says it was the best decision for Tom to dedicate his time to their children, “Tom has poured himself into their children’s lives by continuously volunteering at their school, Tassajara Hills Elementary, and giving the family lots of flexibility on the home front.” Tom also volunteers on several Blackhawk committees and enjoys golfing. Emily lends her expertise by volunteering on John Muir Hospital’s Investment Subcommittee, which helps the hospital with the management of their investments. The entire family remains very active in the

community. Emily and Tom’s children, eightyear-old Melanie and six-year-old Danny, both swim for Hox Swim Team. Melanie takes dance classes with Next Step Studio in Blackhawk. Melanie loves to sing, play piano and has taken voice lessons. Danny is currently taking piano lessons and Karate. When it comes to travel, the family loves all things Disney and Hawaii and have created many magical memories there. Emily says they are always thrilled to come home to Blackhawk though, “Blackhawk is more than just a place to live. We love the Blackhawk lifestyle. We play on a Bocce team. The kids love all the activities, and you can always find us at the July 4th celebration, the Holiday and Easter Brunch, and even the fun Wine Tasting Events. Blackhawk is a special place to live, and I feel we are so lucky to live here.”

Whale Watching in Santa Cruz By Megan Scott, Resident Since 2010

W

hale watching is one of my family’s favorite activities. For anyone who has ever experienced it, there is something so magical about watching one of the largest animals on the planet in their natural habitat. We have gone whale watching several times in Mexico and Hawaii, but never thought to do it only a short 90 minute drive from home. Over President’s Day weekend in February, we made it a point to go whale watching in Santa Cruz. We were not sure what to expect, and ended up taking in a spectacular day of whale excitement that rivals anything we have seen outside Northern California. We chose Santa Cruz Whale Watching to lead our tour on a beautiful boat that departed out of Santa Cruz Harbor. The 4-hour tour included lots of information about the eco system of the water between Santa Cruz and Monterey. We were surprised to learn that the ocean between Monterey and Santa Cruz houses one of the deepest underwater canyons on the west coast, Monterey Canyon. At over two miles deep, this canyon provides a wide array of habitats and attracts a large variety of sea creatures. During our time at sea we encountered several whales, one of them gave us quite a show as he slapped his chin against the water at least a dozen times. We saw whales breach and jump. Along with the whales, we were able to take in the cutest sea otters and the beautiful shoreline that spreads from Santa Cruz to Capitola. We highly recommend whale watching in Santa Cruz and loved our experience with Santa Cruz Whale Watching. You can learn more at http://www.santacruzwhalewatching. com.

Was the Drought Ever Over? By Linda Kralik, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services/ Drysdale Properties, Resident since 1984

S

tatistically, February was the driest month for rainfall since 1864. Yes, read that again, 1864! And, so far, early March has had no measurable rain as of this writing. There have been some forecasts for rain in the middle of March, but will that be enough? As you know, most of our water source comes from the snowpack in the Sierra Mountains as it melts into the watershed and into our water reservoirs. While most reservoirs indicate near capacity, the amount of water content in the limited snowpack is sending ripples of concern throughout many water districts in Northern California. This lack of rain has happened much too soon after a prolonged drought of many years, and gives wonder to surmise if our drought was ever over. There are many counties in central California where “pre-drought” conditions have already been declared. In other surrounding sections of California, a “Dry Area” condition has been declared in which Contra Costa County is one of those counties affected by the limited rainfall.

Well, what does that mean? Looking at the State Drought Portal, these are the mandated conditions if located in a D1 declared drought area, in which Blackhawk is located. D1- Moderate Drought 1. Some damage to crops and pastures 2.

Some Water Shortages and allocation to neighborhoods

3.

Voluntary water-use restrictions requested

Does this mean we are back to the severe drought restrictions of 2015-2016? No, but we are in between the severe and the no drought. Here are some considerations you might embrace in getting ready for Spring while keeping water savings in mind: 1. Replacing your lawn areas with a high-quality artificial lawn. While it might seem expensive initially, the cost of watering a real grass lawn might exceed the cost of replacement over a year or two. Plus, you no longer need a weekly gardening service, hence an additional savings. 2. Look over your landscaping and look at drought tolerant plants that could replace your current shrubs and plants. 3. Review your automatic sprinkler system to determine the most water saving settings. Look at the timing and length of settings for each station. If you replace your rear lawn you can eliminate all of those settings entirely! 4. Eliminate any excessive water use, ie: washing your driveway, washing your car, power washing pathways, etc. Any or all of the above suggestions could help in sustaining our natural resource and provide the necessary water to our community. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. I will happily come to your home to review your current outside water usage and see where you can help. Thank you, Linda Kralik, 925.998.9446 12

Current Principal, Maria Ward, has been part of the St. Isidore community since 2002, first as a teacher for eight years, then as Vice Principal and Principal. She is also a parent of current and former students, which allows her a unique perspective as an administrator. Her oldest child, Elizabeth, graduated from St. Isidore in 2018 and now attends Carondelet. Her sons, Joe David and Charlie, are in 7th and 5th grades, respectively. Ms. Ward says, “I love building relationships with the families. I think as educators we are most proud when students grow and thrive. It is always exciting to see them embrace a new concept and lesson. Most students start with us in Kindergarten, and the transformation from early education to middle school is amazing. It’s a gift having them with us so long. It is always wonderful to hear where they go after high school. We feel blessed that many alumni come back to visit.” Most of the staff at the school have been there for a long time, making it like a second home. “We operate more like family than co-workers,” adds Ward. St. Isidore invites the community to come for a visit! More information can be found on their website, www.stisidore.org. 14

It’s Ok to Put Your Foot in Your Mouth - it’s April Fool’s! By Dr. Asha Bajaj, Resident Since 1986

A

pril is National Foot Health Awareness Month, which makes it the perfect time to get your feet back in shape. Just about everything you do during the day involves being on your feet. Keeping your feet, ankles, and lower legs healthy is the key to preventing unwanted pain and suffering. Foot and ankle anatomy is quite complex. The foot consists of thirty three bones, twenty six joints and over a hundred muscles, ligaments and tendons. These all work together to bear weight, allow movement and provide a stable base for us to stand and move. The ankle joint allows up-and-down movement of the foot. The subtalar joint sits below the ankle joint, and allows side-to-side motion of the foot. Numerous ligaments (made of tough, moveable tissue) surround the true ankle and subtalar joints, binding the bones of the leg to each other and to those of the foot.

longus, dorsiflex the foot and extend the toes. The muscles of the calf also work subtly to stabilize the ankle joint and foot and to maintain the body’s balance. The nerves serve not only to feel the world below your feet but also provide proprioception, the ability to know where the foot is in space, sending messages to the brain to accommodate for different surfaces and contours. What can you do to prevent foot problems? • Practice good foot care. •

Check your feet regularly, or have a member of your family check them. Podiatrists and primary care doctors (internists and family practitioners) are qualified to treat most foot problems. Sometimes the special skills of an orthopedic surgeon, dermatologist and/or a physical therapist are needed.

It also helps to keep blood circulating to your feet as much as possible. Do this by putting your feet up when you are sitting or lying down, stretching if you’ve had to sit for a long while, walking, having a gentle foot massage, or taking a warm footbath. Try to avoid pressure from shoes that don’t fit right.

Try not to expose your feet to cold temperatures.

Don’t sit for long periods of time (especially with your legs crossed).

Stop smoking

Shin muscles, such as the tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum

Why Volatility Is Good By Joe Morgan, CFP®, CFA, Principal: Best Financial Life, Resident since 2004

O

k, let me explain, because I know you’re thinking volatility, especially like what we have in the markets today, cannot be good, right? Well, here goes…. Start with a well-diversified portfolio and an investment plan structured so that you know for a fact your lifestyle will not change due to market movements over the next five years. Is this possible? Yes. In fact, it’s easy – simply take the net cash you will need over the next five years and put it into a bank account. Ok, now that we know our investments are long-term, we can see that volatility is good for us. Reason number one is: when markets dip and we are continuing to invest (like through 401k contributions), we are buying low. That’s good because we are turbo-charging our portfolio for the recovery (and recoveries have always followed market drops). This also works if you are taking distributions to fund your retirement as, given you have 5 years of cash saved up, you can reduce distributions, continue your current lifestyle and decrease your savings to, say 4 years of cash, over the next year. Reason number two that volatility is good is that it brings higher returns. We know the phrase “high risk, high reward.” Well, that’s what we are talking about here. You see, as the markets have dropped, stocks have been returning to their most appropriate holders – the long-term investors – and if you are following a solid plan, that’s you!

When the stock market recovery comes, you will benefit fully and the losers will be those who were forced to sell (likely because they shouldn’t have owned stocks in the first place). Success comes from your plan. Your investments are only fuel for that plan. For more detail, go to https://bestfinlife.com/blog and let’s start calibrating your path to clarity! Tips on How to Perfectly Decorate a Bookshelf By Sheeja Nair, Interior designer, Raashi Design, LLC

B

ookshelves can be much more than a place to store books. These shelves are a great opportunity to showcase keepsakes, family photos and knick-knacks. Here are some tips and tricks to perfectly decorate a bookshelf:

3. Show off vacation photos. Frame a photo that you took on vacation of lovely architecture or a serene beach. It will be a daily reminder of your travels, is less expensive than buying artwork and much more personal!

1. Pair items in odd numbers with differing sizes. For example, choose 3 vases of varying heights. Varying the size of objects add interest, rather than a uniformed, coupled look.

4. Add whimsy. Quirky sculptures, neon signs or cheeky word art bring humor and fun to ordinarily dull shelving.

2. Add greenery. Adding a potted plant to your shelf introduces an organic pop of color. Plants are also known to boost mood, reduce stress and purify the air!

want to be a focal point of a room, but rather an accent. 6. Celebrate each season. Switch out your decor seasonally to celebrate every holiday from Christmas to the Fourth of July while having yearround staple pieces as anchors.

5. Introduce accent colors. If you are looking to liven up a room with some bold colors but are not willing to commit to a large orange sofa, add pops of color on your bookshelf. Brightly colored artwork, lively hued bowls, and fun, graphic books can introduce colors that you wouldn’t

However you chose to decorate your bookshelves, always make sure they are a reflection of you and your family. Happy decorating!

Puff Pastry Sweet By Parisa Z. Ambwani, Resident since 1983

Serves 14 Preheat oven to 400-degree F. Grease a cookie sheet with butter and dust with flour. • • • • • • • • • •

I package puff pastry (long, buttery and flaky pastry dough is preferable) Creamy Filling: 3 tablespoons sweet butter, softened 1 teaspoon arrowroot flour, for thickening (to be mixed with ¼ cup cold milk) 1 dash sea salt ¾ cup scalded milk 5 egg yolks at room temperature ¼ cup sugar, ground, plus ½ cup fine powdered sugar to garnish ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract (adding ½ teaspoon rose water is optional) 1 tablespoon lemon zest

How to Prepare Puff Pastry Dough: Thaw frozen puff pastry in refrigerator overnight or let it stand at room temperature for 45-60 minutes prior to use.

Remove dough from package and lay on prepared cookie sheet. Cut into 14-16 small square pieces. Bake in the center of oven about 12 minutes, then move to upper rack and bake for 2 minutes or until the top is slightly golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oven immediately and let it cool. After cooling with a small knife carefully, scrape off one layer of crispy crust. Collect crumbs into bowl and break into small pieces. These crumbs will be used for garnishing the pastry.

How to Prepare Creamy Filling: In a medium size saucepan,

soften butter and whisk until smooth over gentle low heat. Gradually stir in dissolved arrowroot flour and add salt while stirring vigorously with a whisk, until mixed well (about 1 minute). Gradually add ¾ cup scalded milk and continue mixing over medium heat until a light creamy sauce is formed. Remove the sauce from the heat and stir occasionally. Whisk egg yolks for 30 seconds; gradually stir into ¼ cup powdered sugar, until the mixture becomes pale yellow. Stir in vanilla and lemon zest. Gradually stir into creamy sauce and transfer into upper pot of double boiler (see note). Simmer over medium heat. Stir continually for a few minutes; the filling will suddenly become thicker and shiny (like soft, creamy pudding). When pudding thickens, immediately remove top double boiler pan from the heat and allow to cool completely. Cut each pastry into ½ horizons. Spread one tablespoon of filling onto each pastry; cover filling with other ½. Sprinkle top of pastry with crumbs and dust with powdered sugar to garnish.

Note: How to Use a Double Boiler Pan:

Add enough simmering water to the lower pot of the boiler to touch the bottom of the top pot; add the mixture into upper pot and gently heat over medium heat.

Holistic Journey: Clarity of mind is heightened when mind,

spirit, and heart soar together on wings of harmony. You begin to perceive the subtle truths and value of life. © 2017 Parisa Ambwani ----- All rights reserved www.enlightenedrecipes.com

The Healing Practice By Dr. Tracey James, DC, Anatomy Power Wellness

W

hat is something that so many of us work against and tout our abilities to get as little as possible without ever considering the long-term effects of such practices? This practice has been important for all life not just humans since the beginning of time. This healing practice is commonly known as Sleep. It features five distinct stages, four of NREM (non-rapid eye movement) and one stage of REM (rapid eye movement). Our brains and bodies consolidate the experiences and memories throughout the day increasing healing and restoration. We move through each of these stages in 90-minute cycles and flip-flop between NREM and REM throughout the night. NREM sleep is the state in which we transfer short-term memories to the long-term memory centers of the brain required for saving facts. It is also during these stages of sleep where the physical “trash” is taken out.

∙ BLUE LIGHTS. No computer or phone screens looked at beyond 1 hour of bedtime. This blue light increases your risk of infection by inhibiting TH1 (T-Helper) cells. ∙ INJURIES (past or current). Your body keeps a memory of every injury experienced UNLESS you clear the nervous system. Uncleared injuries can decrease your REM sleep by up to 25%.

Glial cells (the “glue” that holds your neurons together and aids in electrical impulse transmission) shrink in size by up to 60 percent during NREM sleep, enlarging the space around the neurons and allowing the cerebrospinal fluid to clean out the metabolic “trash” that was left by the day’s neural activity. How cool is that? REM sleep is where dreaming happens. Remembering your dreams or not is irrelevant to the benefits provided: REM sleep involves 1) nursing our emotional and mental health and 2) problem solving and creativity. It also builds connections between distantly related informational elements and fits them all together. REM sleep helps turn knowledge into wisdom. Both types of sleep and adequate amounts of each equal a good night’s sleep. With the dawn of technology we have offset our biology. No longer are we getting to bed when the sun goes down and arising when the sun comes out again. We are “burning the midnight oil,” “the candle at both ends,” and not sleeping in favorable conditions that support restful sleep. Sleep is where our healing takes place. If you struggle with sleep - whether getting to sleep, staying asleep, or sleeping without feeling rested upon awakening, it is important to explore factors that might be affecting not only your sleep but long term health.

A few tips: •

∙ TOO MUCH LIGHT & WARM TEMPS. Sleep in its best form for all humans should be done in a dark, cool room (67 degrees F) and should last between 7-9 hours.

Florida’s PGA National Champion Course: Home of the Honda Classic By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012

F

ew golf experiences are as memorable as playing a PGA quality golf course with a caddie just before the Tour event. I played the superb PGA National Resort Champion Course before the Honda Classic held at the end of February in sunny Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. I could almost hear the crowd roar in the spectator stands already installed for the PGA event. A Nicklaus layout, the Champion Course is well known for three holes named The Bear Trap - Holes 15,16 and 17 - perhaps the most diabolical three consecutive holes in golf. The resort is home to four golf courses at the primary Avenue of the Champions address - The Champion (Home of the PGA Tour Honda Classic), The Palmer, The Fazio, and The Squire. A fifth course, The Estates, is 10 miles west. They allow members and guests of the resort access. Courses are rotated daily between members and resort guests.

Golf Magazine’s 2016-17 public course rankings have the Champion Course ranked #9 in Florida. The resort is large, luxurious and legendary, one of the most iconic resorts in all of Florida. Champions Course is not long by most standards, playing 7047 yards from the tips, and 6367 yards from the Blues where I played. The opening hole unveils an uncomplicated course. Fairways are generous and fairway bunkers are not a big worry. Stay out of the rough, though. It is short but thick and uniform. Unlike many courses, it’s a penalizing shot to recover. Greenside bunkers are large with fluffy white sand. Expect no false fronts on greens but several false backs that collect errant shots. Greens are open and inviting to approach shots along the ground. They are large with only mild contours but grainy. Without a doubt, the grain affects your putts. If you’re not used to this, you will struggle on the greens. As with many Florida courses, water hazards are abundant. Eight holes require the approach shot to cross a water hazard.

The Bear Trap is famous for its diabolic temptation to fire at each pin. They include forecaddies with the fee. Invaluable in providing targets, they help tackle the subtle breaks on the grainy greens. Conditions are outstanding; the holes are straightforward. Greens are tricky. Figuring out the subtleties is an intoxicating challenge. It’s a special feeling to play the Champion Course. Once you’ve played here, you’ll appreciate watching the Honda Classic even more. If You Go: Course Info - PGA National Resort is a resort and semi-private golf club with five golf courses comprising The Champion, The Palmer, The Fazio, The Squire and The Estates. Members and resort guests have access to the golf courses. Location - On the Avenue of the Champions about two miles off Interstate 95 at the PGA Boulevard exit in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. About 10 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. About 85 miles north of Miami airport, 15 miles northwest of the West Palm Beach airport, and 150 miles southeast of the Orlando airport. Lodging - PGA National Resort has 379 rooms and suites on-site. They require an overnight stay for access to the golf courses.

Just What Are the Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment? By Richard Anthony, DDS MS – Blackhawk Orthodontics

I

t depends on the patient. From both my personal experience as a clinical orthodontic practitioner and as revealed in years of dental research literature, the perceived benefit of orthodontic therapy varies considerably between each individual patient. Overall, these benefits fall into either physiological or psychological categories. The physiological benefits are associated with the orthodontic treatment to help improve the stability, function, and health of both the teeth and associated oral anatomical structures. Otherwise--if left untreated--a poor bite and orthodontic problems could become worse over time, causing people to be at higher risk for abnormal tooth wear, difficulty in chewing, increased tooth decay, and gum disease. Psychological orthodontic benefits pertain to how an individual’s self-esteem and confidence can be increased by the orthodontic correction of an unsightly set of teeth or facial appearance which caused a person to be overly self-conscious. A child with crooked

teeth will be teased by his or her peers and that may affect their psychological and social development. Even for adults, a poor set of teeth may be perceived by others to be due to poor personal hygiene and sloppiness. In order for a current or prospective orthodontic patient to gain the most benefit from their orthodontic treatment, I have two pieces of advice. First, let your needs be known so that the orthodontic benefits can be specifically tailored to satisfy the needs most important to you; and secondly, seek an experienced orthodontist that is willing to listen to your needs and is capable enough to deliver the benefits.

Top Pool Safety Tips for the Summer Swim Season By Jon Lubrano, President, Atlantis Pools Inc.

S

ummer is almost upon us, which means it’s your pool’s busy season and a good time to brush up on pool safety. To maintain a fun and safe environment around your swimming pool, there are several basic pool safety tips I advise all pool owners to follow. Make pool safety a priority in your backyard by following these guidelines:

4. GFCI and Pool Lights The ground fault circuit interrupter, better known as the GFCI is a safety device used on installations with a higher than normal risk of electric shock. GFCI is a fast-acting circuit breaker designed to shut off electric power in the event of a ground-fault within as little as 1/40 of a second. Pool lights need to be linked to the GFCI to prevent electrocution.

1. Have Compliant Drain Covers (VGB) Virginia Graeme Baker, after whom the Pool and Spa Safety Act is named, died from drowning due to a suction entrapment from a faulty drain cover. All pools and spas should have drain grates or covers that meet safety standards to avoid incidents like the one that took Graeme’s life. Powerful suction from a pool or spa drain can even trap an adult.

2. Safety Gates Secure your pool with appropriate barriers. Completely surround your pool with a fence or barrier with a self-closing, self-latching and outward facing gate. Place a safety cover on the pool or hot tub when not in use and remove any ladders or steps used for access. If you have small children, consider installing an alarm to alert you anytime anyone goes from the house to the backyard.

3. Consider a Poolguard® Safety Buoy Pool Alarm This is a pool alarm that meets county and city requirements for safety and is innovative in that it will alert you in your home, any time something substantial falls into your pool. It floats in your pool and is easier and more effective than many door alarms.

5. Learn CPR Ensure everyone in the home knows how to respond to aquatic emergencies by having appropriate safety equipment and taking water safety, first aid and CPR courses.

6. Keep All Glass Away from Your Pool This summer Atlantis Pools has had to drain three separate pools due to glass tables in backyards that broke resulting in glass in the pool. I can not stress enough how important it is to keep all glass out of your backyard if you have a pool.

7. Spa Use and Alcohol Alcohol and spa use should never go together. Common side effects of drinking while submerged in hot water are dehydration, heat exhaustion and drowning due to impaired reflexes. At Atlantis Pools Inc., we want you and your family to have a safe and fun experience with your backyard pool. Please call us at (925) 736-0447, email info@atlantispoolsdanville.com or visit us online at www.atlantispoolsdanville.com to schedule a visit.

Life through a Lens

Seattle State of Mind thinking Starbucks, rainy days, Chihuly and more... By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015

I

recently went on a short weekend trip with my family to Tacoma, Washington for my daughter’s ice-skating synchronized team competition. While we were there, we visited downtown Seattle, about an hour drive away. It is a compact downtown with a fascinating mix of historic charm and modern design that is bustling with vibrant energy. Our first stop was Space Needle, Seattle’s iconic landmark. The open-air deck at 520’ offered 360 degree thrilling panoramic views of the downtown, the Great Ferris Wheel, Mount Rainier and surrounding islands. We were in awe of the leaning glass walls, angled sky riser glass benches and of course the Loupe with rotating glass floor, first and the only one of its kind in the world. The perfect sky-high selfie, waving at Zoomie (at teleporter digital kiosks) and daring to walk on Loupe was a fun futuristic experience. Our second stop and right next to the tower was the famous

Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum that showcases the stunning artwork collection of Dale Chihuly, native of Tacoma and world’s best-known glass artist. The galleries, everchanging gardens and Chihuly Glass House with Space Needle signature glass house in the background left us speechless. It is where creativity, curiosity and color come to life. Later in the evening, we ate at one of the restaurants in Pike Place market, the oldest farmers market in the U.S. It was thriving with local vendors who were selling fish, souvenirs, handicrafts etc. On Pike street, we had coffee at the original Starbucks. We strolled down an unassuming alley way to the Great Gum Wall of Seattle.

26

APRIL 2020

Spectacular views of Seattle from observation deck of Space Needle Gum wall covered in used chewing gum

It is a hidden work of street wall art that is weird, germy but one cool attraction. The stench of decaying and aged chewing gum on 50 feet of brick wall can be offensive to some, including my husband, but an intriguing sight and beautiful work of collective art for me and my kids. The city of glass, as I would love to call it, is definitely a photographer’s dream come true. My camera was on a non-stop clicking mode. Back home in Blackhawk, I am watching Sleepless in Seattle, sipping Starbucks and remembering Seattle. Definitely on my mind!

Sonia Lamba As an aspiring photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity!

Solar Finally Makes Sense By Kyle Lowy, Kota Energy Group, Resident since 2019

Y

ES there is finally an option other than putting down $40,000 and waiting for your return on investment. Before, there were strictly 2 ways for homeowners to go solar; one option was to pay a large amount of cash for a system, upfront, and wait for their ROI, which took about 12-15 years! The second option was to lease/rent a system, which would place a lien on their property immediately, making moving a headache, and let’s not forget about that company keeping YOUR Federal Tax credit money. Up until 2019, the federal government would give you a huge 30% tax credit! Due to so many people going solar, it has now gone down to 26% and is dissolving in 2020. PG&E is making it easy to go solar, due to their mistakes leading to multiple fires and bankruptcy, which caused over 2 million people in California to have their power shut off last year! PG&E rates are posted publicly and have gone up on average, 6-8% each year. This year, rates are set to go up another 12.4%! Currently, everyone is on an unwritten

contract with PG&E. If rates rise, you have to pay, if you don’t pay, you don’t have power. This is a bill that you cannot cancel and you have to pay it for the rest of your life. Since you are paying for this electric bill anyway, why not replace this bill with something that will allow you to pay less, and put money in your pocket! Just like you went from renting to owning a home, or why you probably chose a fixed mortgage rate instead of an adjustable rate.

Stop throwing away your money to PG&E and start paying a fixed bill that allows you to own your power today! Call Kyle with Kota to get your proposal started! See how you can go solar without any money out of pocket, reduce 30-50% from your power bill, increase the value of your home, and claim Uncle Sams’ 26% tax credit! Blackhawk 2020 Punta Mita Golf Trip: Marival Armony Resort By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990

B

rian Brake and his wife, Jennifer, hosted a fun group of avid Blackhawk golfers and ‘sun lovers’ to the newly opened Marival Armony Oceanside Resort in Punta Mita, Mexico. A planning trip meeting was hosted by Tyler Flake from ILT and Brian Brake with wine in the Lakeside Grille to explain the details of the all-inclusive golf trip and to organize the tee times. On departure day, a bus met us at the Lakeside parking lot and drove us to the Oakland airport for our Alaska charter plane. It is an easy 3 hour direct chartered flight where we were joined by people from 2 other Bay area Golf Clubs. We arrived to a ‘sun splashed day’ and checked into our oceanfront rooms at the resort. A welcome cocktail party, beautiful sunset and warm breezes on the majestic oceanfront quickly shifted everyone into ‘vacation’ mode.

The trip included golf at 3 great courses. You could also play additional rounds. We played El Tigre, Flamingos Golf Club, and Greg Norman designed Litibu. All three challenged any golfing skill level and were in good condition. The caddies were also friendly and very helpful. We especially enjoyed seeing the crocodiles bask in the warm sunshine and the 3 Bengal Tigers at El Tigre behind the 17th tee. This has to be one of the few golf courses in the world that has tigers. Tee times were also set up at the nearby luxurious Four Seasons Resort. The resort includes 2 fabulous courses on the ocean where many celebrities and film stars escape to the warm Mexican sunshine and kind, friendly service staff. Marival Armony has 5 restaurants, Wi-Fi, multiple bars serving premium liquor, spa, pools, and the beach that is great for walking, swimming, surfing and kayaking, tequila tasting, bingo, dart throwing contests and karaoke. Also provided were evening entertainment concerts under the stars, by copy bands of the 3 Tenors and Michael Jackson, which all enjoyed. The Farewell Dinner Fiesta was a fitting ending to a fabulous trip. Great food, drinks, music and a stunning Mexico sunset made for an eternal deposit to the fun section of our memory bank. This is our 10th ILT trip and looking forward to going again in 2021. Viva Mexico!

Breast Enhancement for the Modern Woman By Stephen J Ronan, MD, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery, Resident since 2007

T

he breast is a universal symbol of femininity, nurturing, love, and sexuality. Most women interested in breast augmentation are intelligent, successful and well-adjusted individuals who are simply concerned with their breast size. The overwhelming majority of women who undergo breast augmentation are very satisfied with their result. Because of such high patient satisfaction and improvement in self-image, it is not surprising that breast augmentation is one of the more common aesthetic plastic surgery procedures performed. There are two main groups of women that are typically interested in breast augmentation. The first group is women who feel they never developed the breast volume they desire. After surgery, many of these patients benefit psychologically and experience an improvement in self-confidence. In fact, studies show that many women have a better self-image and less anxiety, depression, and shyness after breast augmentation. The second group of women that commonly seek breast enhancement are those that lost volume after pregnancy, a condition called postpartum breast involution. Many of these patients complain that ‘I have nothing left!’ Typically these patients have an augmentation which restores their breast volume…and sometimes a bit more! A mastopexy, or breast lift, procedure can be performed at the same time to lift and improve shape simultaneously. Breast augmentation is a safe procedure. Breast augmentation will not affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed. The implant is placed behind the chest muscle and never touches the breast tissue. Most patients do not have a permanent change in sensation after augmentation. Breast implants do not cause breast cancer or any other systemic disease. In order to provide the safest environment, I believe that all surgery should be performed in a certified surgery center or hospital with an anesthesiologist present. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for breast enhancement is to schedule a consultation. During this no-cost, no-obligation consultation, the procedure is explained in detail and all of your questions are answered. If you are interested in learning more about breast augmentation or other cosmetic procedures, please contact my office at 925.736.5757. We look forward to hearing from you… and exploring the possibility of sculpting a new you!

Morasky Clay Wealth Management:

Where client goals meet exceptional service By Kara Navolio

ark Morasky’s interest in finance began when he was a cadet at West Point. Although he majored in aerospace engineering, after his service in the Army he went on to work in the corporate world, leading and managing people. In 1996 he decided his true passion was in finance and in owning his own business. While living in Madison, Wisconsin, he joined Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in 2006 and partnered with Erik Clay, another senior advisor to open Morasky Clay Wealth Management, Merrill. In 2012 Mark and his wife, Lydia, who is also in financial services, moved to Danville, and Mark opened his East Bay office serving employees and executives of publicly traded companies, business owners, and high net worth families. I take the time to really know them and listen to what their life goals are. Together we develop a plan to help make those goals a reality.” Mark and Lydia are Blackhawk country club members and active supporters of PGA HOPE (Helping our Patriots Everywhere), which introduces golf to veterans with disabilities. The golf becomes a means to enhance veteran’s physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. Mark recently became the Tournament Director of Blackhawk’s Invest in Hope Golf Tournament, which is a fundraiser for PGA HOPE. Through Blackhawk country club, Mark and Lydia have also made life-long friends through playing golf, bocce, and taking occasional trips with other members. “We are very proud to be part of this amazing community,” says Mark. Mark brings the tenets of honor and duty that he learned at West Point to all aspects of his life, including his work. He adds, “Our goal is to be the premier financial advisors to the Blackhawk community. What makes us different is our comprehensive approach. o matter the season or occasion, I can always count on Lemon Gift Shop in Downtown Danville for the perfect gift. Local owner and founder of Lemon Gift Shop, Sara Weymouth’s grandmother used to tell her, lemons are great for your skin, detoxing the body and all natural cleaning product. Sara took this idea of a super fruit that can do it all and created Lemon, a gift shop so versatile that you would be hard pressed to not find a gift for someone on your list (and while you are at it, yourself!). Sara was raised in the East Bay and then graduated from business school with her BS in Business Marketing. After 10 years in Corporate America, two small side businesses and the birth of her youngest of 3 babies, she was ready to take the risk of a lifetime and launch Lemon. When Sara first came up with the idea for Lemon, friends questioned how she would be able to carry all the different categories in her shop to solve their gifting needs without having a store cram packed with stuff. Sara’s selective buying has created a store with the best of the best; focusing on organic, all natural products, many of which are made locally. Throw in full blown gift wrap (a rarity these days) and Lemon is making it so easy to grab a gift you will be proud to give and most importantly, someone will be thrilled to receive. Usually it takes 1-2 years for a business to see a profit, but Sara took control of every cent that came and left the business, handled all of the marketing, customer service and buying for the store. Lemon was a pop up shop for a few months before Sara decided to open the Danville Location. Within a year she launched Lemon’s E-commerce site and then quickly followed with a second location in Lafayette. What started as an idea and a one woman show has quickly grown into a bustling business with over 50 vendors, ten employees, two store locations, a website, and that is just the beginning. Lemons really are a super fruit and Lemon really is a super store! BLACKHAWK LIVING 33

Make Your Ring a Star with Regular Cleaning! By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry & The Broadway Plaza Forevermark Boutique

T

here are many factors that contribute to the everyday wear of your jewelry. Most people choose to wear their engagement ring at all times. While this does lessen your chances of losing your ring, it does mean your ring will need regular cleaning. Doing the dishes, going to the beach, doing household chores, and cooking dinner are all activities that could cause dirt and other daily items like lotion and hairspray to build up on your ring. How often should I clean my ring?

If you’re wearing your ring at all times, a thorough cleaning once a month is a good rule to follow. Many jewelers will also recommend regular professional cleaning at the jeweler in between your at-home cleanings. Be sure to inquire about cleaning services when you make your purchase. Most professional cleaning services are offered at no charge, and might even be required with some warranties or insurance policies.

to gently buff. STEP 5: Rinse with warm water and pat dry. At-home cleanings will give your ring its sparkle back. It’s up to you how often you choose to clean your ring at home, but we do advise having your ring cleaned regularly by your jeweler. A thorough cleaning by a diamond expert will reach places you can’t when you do an at-home cleaning. If you have questions, contact the experts at Padis Jewelry, and we will be happy to provide all the information you need to help you keep your jewelry in great shape. If you would like to have your jewelry professionally cleaned complimentary, feel free to bring it to Padis Jewelry locations or our Forevermark Boutique in Walnut Creek and we will have your jewelry looking shiny and new! You can reach us anytime at concierge@padisjewelry.com or 925-395-2569

What should I avoid when wearing my diamond ring?

Bridal jewelry, such as engagement rings and wedding bands are typically worn daily and can appear like they’ve lost their sparkle if not cleaned on a regular basis. As a general rule, avoid these things when wearing your diamond jewelry: • Putting on lotions • Any type of rough sports play • Gardening • Painting of any kind • Chlorinated pools and hot tubs • Touching diamonds with your fingers, as smudges can affect a diamond’s luster and fire Proceed with caution when using ultrasonic cleaners, as only certain gemstones can handle the ultrasonic vibrations. It’s best to leave this type of cleaning to the professionals, just to be safe. How do I clean my diamond ring at home?

You can make your own diamond cleaning solution at home using white vinegar and baking soda. Mix about 2 tablespoons into a small bowl of white vinegar until it’s thoroughly dissolved. Follow these steps to give your ring a thorough at-home cleaning: STEP 1: Use your fingernail to inspect each jewel, making sure no stones are loose. This is especially important for rings with many small stones. STEP 2: Use a polishing cloth to polish the metal. STEP 3: Soak your ring in your homemade solution for 2-3 hours. STEP 4: Use a very soft toothbrush or a jewelry cleaning brush 34
