Meet the Bowes Family:
Family, Faith, and Community! By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
H
igh school best friends, Jim and Teresa Bowes, first met their junior year in AP History class. Teresa was an outstanding volleyball and soccer athlete, on student council, and a focused student at Carondelet High School in Concord. Jim was a modern-day renaissance man who played football, was an Eagle Scout, and a 4.0 student at neighboring De La Salle High School. Teresa immediately caught Jim’s eye. “She was pretty, incredibly kind and had a great personality,” says Jim. Teresa says she knew Jim was special because he made her laugh and valued family. “I could tell that family came first. That, along with his beautiful blue eyes and amazing sense of humor drew me to him.” Jim was born in Portland Oregon, but spent most of his childhood in Rock Springs, Wyoming and Colorado Springs, Colorado. Teresa was born in Oakland where she lived until moving to Alamo when she was in the third grade. Jim and Teresa became very close friends their senior year in high school, even taking weekend trips to Yosemite just the two of them, and they grew inseparable as friends. Jim had received his nomination to attend the US Military Academy at West Point and was planning to leave California shortly after graduation, so Teresa and Jim remained close friends. Just a few weeks before graduation, Jim found out he would be unable to attend West Point due to a hip injury. “With my dream of attending West Point and becoming a gunfighter over, I finally had the courage to ask Teresa to be more than friends. The rest is history” says Jim. The couple dated throughout college. Jim attended UC Berkeley and Teresa attended Santa Clara University. They saw each other every weekend, travelled Europe together, and took lots of camping trips. After graduating college, Teresa took a trip to Europe with girlfriends, and Jim spent three months backpacking through Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales where he drank a lot of Guinness and came to the realization that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Teresa. Shortly after his return, Jim proposed to Teresa and she accepted. They were married in July 1996 at St. Isidore in Danville, with a reception at Diablo Country Club. Teresa shares that Jim is always working to keep the romance alive.
“Jim can be incredibly romantic. One time he had a special present sent from Kinsale, Ireland. We had visited a few months earlier, and I found a beautiful cape in a store we visited. At the time, it seemed too extravagant to purchase. Little did I know that he would call the store and have it shipped to me, and then plan the most memorable date around that gift- a surprise Les Miserables show in San Francisco.” They called Pleasanton home after getting married, but Teresa says they eventually fell in love with Blackhawk. “After several shorter stints in Boston where Jim was working as a consultant, we wanted to get closer to our families. I fell in love with the beauty of Hidden Oaks and we found our forever home here in 2009,” adds Teresa. Jim graduated from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley and began a career in management consulting. Teresa graduated with a Liberal Studies degree from Santa Clara University and then went on to get her teaching credential from Saint Mary’s College. Teresa began her teaching career at Assumption School in San Leandro before returning to her old stomping grounds at St. Isidore School in Danville as the Science Collaboration Teacher for grades K-5 where she taught for many years. She enjoyed teaching and watching her children flourish at the school she had attended and graduated from many moons earlier. Teresa just recently left teaching to take on new challenges working in the Dean’s office of the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University. “I really miss my students but am enjoying this next phase of my career,” says Teresa. Five daughters complete the Bowes family, which Teresa says makes for a very busy household. “We have five daughters who were all born within thirty nine months of each other. Two sets of twins with a single sandwiched in between. My experience as a teacher definitely comes in handy! When the girlies were little and it felt overwhelming, we chose to laugh and find humor in our situation. Lily and Maggie are juniors, and Audrey is a freshman at Carondelet High School. Amelia and Allison are 8th graders at St. Isidore School and will join their older sisters at Carondelet High School next year. “The St. Isidore & Carondelet communities are a big part of our lives,” says Teresa. We strive to raise strong, faith-filled, kind and generous girls, making community involvement a top priority for the family. All five daughters are athletes, volunteers, and contributors to the

community. They are very active in the National Charity League, which supports many philanthropies in the area. The girls have been involved in just about every activity possible including soccer, basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, rugby, swimming, 4H, theater, karate, Girl Scouts, band, church camps and more. “At the height of soccer season, we would often have tournament weekends where we would have 16 games on the calendar. This taught us complex logistics planning and also the power of the village. We are forever grateful for our friends, family and neighbors helping us get our kids to wherever they needed to go!” says Teresa.
vacation spot is San Carlos, Mexico. “We have been taking the girls on road-trips since they were babies and they are great travelers. We have taken several road-trips into mainland Mexico and rented a small beach house for a month right on the Sea of Cortez to live the beach bum life. This spot is our retirement dream when we make it there!,” says Teresa. They also love visiting Kauai and making special memories at Disneyland and Disneyworld.
In 2017, the Bowes family faced their most difficult challenge when Teresa was diagnosed with advanced stage breast cancer. “Teresa is definitely the heart, soul and engine that keeps our family together and on the right path. Even with Teresa undergoing chemo, radiation, and multiple surgeries throughout 2018 and 2019, we still consider ourselves blessed. We would not have made it through without the support and prayers of family, friends, neighbors and community. The outpouring of love and help was amazing. Teresa is nearly fully recovered and back to her normal energetic self. We now try and pay it forward to friends and neighbors going through their own challenges,” says Jim.
Along with the seven human members of the household, the Bowes have a 6-yearold Goldendoodle named Chewy and an 8-year-old Sulcata tortoise named Shelldon, (You may have seen pictures of Sheldon on Nextdoor as he frequently escapes, and the Bowes need the assistance of neighbors to find him).
When it comes to family getaways, their favorite
After 12 years in Blackhawk, Teresa and Jim could not be happier with their Hidden Oaks community. “We knew we wanted to raise our kids here. We love the quiet, tree-lined streets. It feels like since we have been here, a lot of families with small children have moved in, which is great. While our kids are a little bit older now, we really enjoy seeing the groups of kids playing and riding their bikes all around the neighborhood. We love our neighbors and have gotten close with several other families,” says Teresa.

In a medium skillet, stir fry onion, ginger, and garlic in heated olive oil for 2-3 minutes until onion becomes slightly golden brown. Add all remaining ingredients except corn starch and water (tomato, red bell pepper, sweet pepper, wine, lemon rind, bay leaf, sugar, basil, thyme, salt, and black pepper) to onion mixture. Bring the onion-tomato mixture to simmer. Cover the skillet and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally so it does not burn. Remove bay leaf and add the mixture of cornstarch and water while stirring constantly; continue to simmer for 15 minutes until sauce reaches the desired consistency. Garnish with cilantro and serve with pan-fried fish and green salad of your choice. Holistic Journey: Roll in the manifold pastures of genuine self-love and give of this love to others. With this love arrives limitless power and energy. ©2021 Parisa Z. How a Private Money Lender can be used for Bridge Financing
By Cesar Peña, Rubicon Mortgage Fund, LLC, Resident since 2020
How a Bridge Loan is structured: Bridge Loans allow borrowers to purchase their new property before selling their existing property. By using a bridge loan, borrowers will use their existing property as additional collateral to make an extremely competitive offer, and possibly even purchase the new property with no down payment. Rubicon can offer up to a 60% loan using the combined value of the 2 properties, subject to Rubicon’s internal valuation.
The flexibility a bridge loan provides to borrowers: Bridge Loans enable borrowers to make aggressive offers on their purchase, to buy before they sell, while giving them more flexibility on their timeframe to relocate. The ideal scenario is when there is liquidity in the existing property and borrowers prefer the option to reduce the cash to purchase before selling. A Bridge Loan can also be a useful tool for an investor or borrower looking to relocate to a different submarket. This type of loan can additionally give clients the opportunity to improve the existing property as an attempt to
get top dollar on the sale, after purchase of the new property, also eliminating the necessity to find a rental in the interim.
How a Bridge Loan is paid off: Upon sale of the existing property, most of the proceeds pay off the loan with Rubicon, and any existing debt can be refinanced through a conventional lender. Bridge loans can also be used on reverse 1031 exchanges, where the replacement property is purchased using the relinquished property as additional collateral. Rubicon works directly with the 1031 Accommodator to facilitate this.
What is Rubicon Mortgage Fund: Rubicon Mortgage Fund, LLC is a direct private money lender in Lafayette, CA. We specialize in financing short-term secured loans and commercial lending on properties throughout California. Rubicon is an asset-based lender, where loans are secured by real estate and the amount of the loan relies on the value of the property or properties, not the borrower’s credit.
14
APRIL 2021
What makes Rubicon Mortgage Fund different from conventional lenders: Rubicon does not require appraisals or credit checks and is solely asset-based. Rubicon has experience financing both simple and complex transactions and works diligently to find a solution to fit borrowers’ needs. In many real estate transactions, timing is a crucial factor. Rubicon can offer a letter of intent within 24 hours and can typically finance a bridge loan in as little as 10 business days. The above example also works on all commercial property types.

Want to know your home value?
Ask for a PEAR. By Tiffany Stock, Real Estate Broker, Keller Williams
T
hese days everyone and every site can tell you what your home is worth. Everywhere you look you can find someone offering comparables, ‘comps’, and even a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) report. All of these give you the value of what similar homes are selling for and an idea of market value of your home. It is great to know what price range you can plan on selling your home for, but what you really should want to know is how
According to CoreLogic, the average American has more equity than they think. But before you can plan on your next house purchase and your budget, you might want to have a better understanding of how much you have. For example, you might just guesstimate the loan balance you owe, minus average closing fees and ‘bam’ - there is your purchasing power for the next home. Right?!? Not quite. These days most brokers want you to spend money to get the home on the market. How much is that going to cost, you might ask? This is exactly why instead of asking for a CMA, what you should be asking for is a PEAR - Professional Equity Assessment Report. A PEAR report will not only tell you the range in where you should be selling, the market report part, it will also tell you exactly what work needs to be done to get your home that sales amount (based on a visual inspection of the condition of your home) by assessing how much money it will take to get your home on the market. It will also include finding all liens against the home that must be paid off. To really understand your true equity, and not just what your house should sell for, you need a PEAR! This is a better tool than a CMA, because you can know exactly how much cash you will walk away with when you sell. Given our current seller’s market, homes are frequently going over the asking price with multiple bids, which increases your equity. Now is the time to find out what your “PEAR” is worth. For questions contact Tiffany Stock at Keller Williams Danville.

Alameda Shoreline & Bayfarm Trail By Austin Scott, Second Grader, Tassajara Hills
I
f the sun is shining, the Alameda Shoreline Trail is one of my family’s favorite places to go for a bike ride. Last time we went, we rode almost 15 miles along the water. The whole trail is away from cars and very safe. Bring a picnic because there are plenty of nice places to stop for a picnic along the water, and you can see the tall buildings in San Francisco across the bay. I loved crossing the bike bridge and dipping my feet in the water at the end of our ride. It’s about a 45 minute drive to get there from here, but so worth it. A New Look for Summer
By Stephen J. Ronan, MD FACS, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery and Migraine Center
S
ummer is just around the corner, and if you want to look your best, you’re probably already thinking about or shopping for new summer outfits. This time of year we receive a lot of inquiries and conduct quite a few consultations on various breast procedures. A breast augmentation is a great way to enhance the shape and volume of your breasts and fill out new outfits more comfortably. Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure used to increase breast volume, helping you get breasts that better fit your overall proportions. This procedure involves the placement of breast implants, most commonly inserted under your breast tissue and chest muscles. You can also choose this surgical procedure to make your breasts more symmetrical or to restore breast size after pregnancy and breastfeeding has left them looking somewhat deflated. There are two main types of breast implants that you can select: saline or silicone filled implants. Nearly all of our patients choose silicone implants because they typically yield more natural looking and feeling results. A breast augmentation procedure involves making small incisions
through which the implants can be placed. You have the option to get an incision around the areola, under the breast, or in the armpit. Most of our patients prefer the axillary incision to avoid a scar on the breast. Once the incision is made, the implant is placed behind the chest muscle and never touches the breast tissue. Most patients do not have a permanent change in sensation after surgery, and the procedure will not affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed. There are two main groups of women that are typically interested in breast augmentation. The first group is women who feel they never developed the breast volume they desire. The second group of women who commonly seek breast enhancement are those that lost volume after pregnancy, a condition called post-partum breast involution. Breast augmentation is a safe procedure. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate is to schedule a consultation. If you are interested in learning more about breast augmentation or other cosmetic procedures, please contact my office at 925.736.5757. We look forward to hearing from you… and exploring the possibility of sculpting a new you this summer season.

Do You Have Too Much Company Stock? By Joe Morgan, CFP®, CFA, Principal: Best Financial Life, Resident since 2004
O
wning stock in your company may make you a good corporate citizen, and it might even make you rich. But don’t think of it as an “investment.” It’s a gamble. Think about it, you get your income from this company and now you own stock in the company. Should the unthinkable happen (and it does,…often), you have a lot at risk! Not only do you have the vested stock and your income at risk, but you also have unvested stock that undoubtedly pops up as a large number when you log in. (And you don’t even own that yet!) Instead of allowing your company stock to pile up, have a LongTerm Investment strategy in place. And create a plan to transfer you money from this single-stock investment to your diversified retirement engine that will grow over time without the risk that comes from a single CEO and a single board of directors. For more details, check out a deeper analysis at www.BestFinLife. com/blog, but in this space I want to simply make the point that this can be very important. For a limited time, I am offering a completely FREE financial conversation on the topic of your choice. FREE, that is, from cost and also FREE from any sales pitch. Simply schedule your call here: www.calendly.com/bestfinlife/free-financial-conversation. Best Financial Life is a Registered Investment Advisor with the State of California and Joe Morgan is a fiduciary to his clients at all times.

Crafts Corner
Spring Craft Ideas By Michelle Barry, Resident since 2018
S
pring has sprung so let’s make some butterflies. I thought I would try to inspire you with colorful projects this month. The first craft can be created with little ones. Try it with your children or grandchildren.
This is an example of one of the butterflies before I folded it, it is super simple. You can use acrylic paint or markers. The example on the website looks even cuter and it was inspired by Eric Carle’s work. So pick up “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” book by Eric Carle and make some butterflies to celebrate Spring!
These butterflies can be made as colorful as you like and they are incredibly easy. The idea came from @jumbletree whom I follow on Instagram. You can also find the instructions on her blog at https:// patchworkparent.blogspot.com/ search?q=butterfly The other project I want to show you is another colorful one. It is a crochet blanket that took me less than three weeks (part time) to complete. I have been enjoying crochet since I learned how to during the Pandemic. I hope this inspires you to learn. This pattern is “The Cosy Stripe” from Attic 24. Attic 24 is a British company, so they spell “cozy” with an “s”. Attic 24 has a plethora of crochet and knit kits, supplies, etc. They are on Instagram @attic24. You can also go to their website: https://attic24. t y p e p a d .c o m / we blog / cosy-stripe-blanket.html I’m “literally” hooked! I would love it if you would post your finished projects on Instagram using the hashtag #BHLMCrafts Have a wonderful April!

Mouthwatering Mexican Specialties at Los Panchos, Danville By Megan Scott, Resident Since 2010
W
e love supporting local, small business. Meet Fernando, Blackhawk resident and Manager/Co-Owner of Los Panchos in Downtown Danville. Los Panchos is a family-owned business with a story rooted in the Bay Area. Established in 1991, they feature a full menu of mouthwatering Mexican specialties and beverages. With a comfy outdoor patio, with lots of heat lamps and smiles, we love family dinners at Los Panchos.
The Los Panchos Story
At just 17 years old, Aurelio Fernandez migrated from Michoacán, Mexico to start a new life in the United States (1950’s). He worked in the construction industry and saved every penny. As the years went on, his migration to the U.S. forced him to leave his wife Gloria and four children, Irma, Benito, Dora, and Susana. After many months of being apart, the family reunited when they moved to Denver, CO in 1972. Soon after they welcomed their fifth child, Veronica. Eventually, in pursuit of new opportunities, they migrated to Pittsburg, CA in 1977, where their sixth child, Fernando, was born. Aurelio continued to work in the construction industry while Gloria took multiple positions as a cook in Mexican restaurants. She brought her own style of authentic recipes that were clearly above and beyond the competition. Then, after years of hard work and leveraging their savings, they opened the first Los Panchos Restaurant in Pacheco in 1991. The name originated from a famous trio of musicians that were popular in the 1940’s. With long hours and many personal sacrifices, the family laid the foundation for the Los Panchos Restaurant chain. The success is founded on the strong family values, authentic home-style cooking and a family oriented atmosphere. Fernando and his family love sharing the family recipes with the Danville community.

Follow your Dream!
Wheel of Fortune Practice App
By Jerry Milenbach, Resident Since 2020
Part II of a III-part Series: Now that I knew I had a glimmer of hope to make it on the show, I began researching everything I could on how to succeed at a game show audition, specifically Wheel of Fortune’s audition. You would be truly surprised at how much one can find on the internet when doing this kind of search. I read all kinds of articles that provided a variety of resources and advice on how to be your best at an audition. The advice ranged from completing as many word puzzle books as you can, downloading the Wheel of Fortune app, watching the show nightly, and at the audition you must smile continuously and clap a lot! To think I had only twenty-two days between the day I first received the email and the audition to accomplish all of this and more was frightening. The day had finally arrived, January 29, 2020, and I decided to take a half-day off work since our San Francisco office was down the street from the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. Over the past few weeks, I had completed all that was advised and had my head full of puzzles, strategies and of course anxieties. I believe a key aspect of being able to calm myself was befriending former contestants online through various forms of social media and then finding out that one of my high school friends along with her husband were on the show as a team several years prior. Having that firsthand advice became so invaluable to me.

Wheel of Fortune Puzzle Book
APRIL 2021
Now here I am, standing in line waiting to be seated in the ballroom of the hotel, with all the other contestants who were trying out. As I took my seat, I saw a replica wheel spinner and a huge projector playing clips of the show. At this moment it became very surreal, and I was trying to soak it all up. They began roll-call, explained how the next few hours were going to progress and told us they would send out letters within two weeks if you had earned a spot on the show. The first of the activities Prizes won included having all sixty at Audition of us take turns as we were called to try and solve a puzzle that was put on the video board. One of the contestant supervisors would spin the wheel and call out a name for us to stand. We had to be quick, loud, concise, smiling and clapping. On one of my turns, I was quite lucky as the person before me called out a letter that was not in the puzzle and half of the puzzle was up on the board. I called two letters and solved the puzzle correctly. The host held up an autographed photo of Vanna White in one hand and a Wheel of Fortune hat in the other for me to choose. I smiled, and clearly stated I wanted
the autographed photo as the crowd laughed; however, I was given both prizes. A nice way to start the afternoon. After all of us had a chance to solve some puzzles, we had to take a written test where we were given thirty hangman like puzzles, each with one or two letters provided to see if we could solve them. Some were quite challenging, and I would guess I only got about half of them correct. Once that was done, the supervisors began to call out names for eighteen people to stay another hour as the others would be excused. I was lucky enough to be chosen to stay. In this last part, we were brought up six at a time to come up front and stand in a row. We took turns acting as if we were spinning the wheel and would again have to try and solve puzzles put up on the board. We also were told that this would run quicker than the earlier rounds and we would truly have to be fast on our feet. I felt I did well at this and at the end of each of our rounds, we were able to talk for a moment about ourselves. Now it was time to let the rest of us go, and they also told us that if we get a letter in the mail, we will be selected at some point to be on the show. As I walked out, all I could think about was getting that letter. For the next couple of weeks, I would be rushing to the mailbox hoping the letter would be there. Then, on the fourteenth day, there it was. I carefully opened the envelope and began reading the first few words, and of course, seeing the word “congratulations” on the top, I knew my dream was beginning to come true. In the letter, it stated to continue practicing and brush up on everything one could know about the show. It also stated that I would be selected within the next eighteen months. When I read that, I was thinking to myself that if I must wait that long, I would go crazy. However, just two weeks later, I received an email titled “Wheel of Fortune taping on Thursday March 12, 2020!” My heart sank as I was so excited, so happy, so thrilled that this was going to happen. I received this email just two weeks from when I was to tape my episode, so I had to do everything to be my best. This included things like what was I going to wear, how I was going to get there and who was going with me. The week before I was to drive down, the pandemic was beginning to take hold here, and Wheel had stated they were going to stop filming in front of a live studio audience. I was a little panicked wondering if my 91-yearWheel of Fortune Promo Picture old grandmother and girlfriend were still going to be allowed to be in the audience. Thankfully, they were still allowed to be on the set. Once I found out that news, I was all set and ready to do this. To make a dream come true and realize that if you truly put your mind to it, you can do anything!

Life through a Lens
Skiing During Pandemic: Our trip to Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows! By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015
S
ki resorts are open and available to anybody with wheels and some free time. Hence, it’s no surprise that people from the Bay Area and around, flock here to get fresh air, enjoy the beauty of sunny slopes and endless hiking trails; which can be very therapeutic at times like this. People have been traveling to Tahoe on the weekends, or have done shortterm rentals or bought homes here during the pandemic. For us the ski season has been very mellow and wary. Kids were happy that they have been able to ski at Squaw a couple of times, our usual winter hangout. Face coverings and social distancing is mandatory here, like in any other ski resort. Despite these little inconveniences, we were out skiing and enjoying having fun together as a family, which gave us some sense of normalcy. I love shopping in the village (see attached photo), which is now at a limited capacity; going for walks and soaking in the beautiful views of snow capped Squaw Peak (see attached photos); followed by some mulled wine and Fireside pizza under the blue skies, since outdoor dining is now open. A paradise indeed for a walking wanderer like me. The ski season has been harder than usual, but reduced crowds on the slopes has made the skiing a more pleasant experience by easing the
congestion on the ski trails. There were days when my kids had the whole mountain to themselves. Who could complain about that? So just have a blast on the slopes, follow the local COVID-19 guidelines and be grateful for the little things! As an aspiring photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity!

Buena Vista:
Established in 1857 California’s First Premium Winery By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990
R
ecently we had the pleasure to experience California’s first premium winery, Buena Vista. It is located in Sonoma, an easy 1-hour drive from our home in Danville.
The Buena Vista Wine founder was Agoston Haraszthy. He proclaimed himself as the “Count of Buena Vista.” He was described as having a colorful personality, loved life and especially great wine. Immigrating from Europe in 1840, he sought “purple gold” and founded Buena Vista Winery in 1857 Today the winery is owned by Jean-Charles Boisset, another brilliant businessman and flamboyant personality. The Boisset Family owns a number of wineries including Raymond Vineyards in Napa, which we are members of. The original Buena Vista winery is now a California Landmark. Our host for our tasting was Ariel. She was very knowledgeable and proudly informed us about their extensive selection of wonderful wines. The ambiance for the tasting was very fun. We visited on President’s Day, and the outdoor covered tasting tables were full of people enjoying the wine and a soft rain that made it feel and look mystical. We tasted their 2018 Reserve Chardonnay, Reserve Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Charbono and 2017 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. All of them were excellent and very enjoyable. Our final tasting was the 2018 Sheriff of Buena Vista. It honors the ‘Counts’ role as San Diego’s first sheriff. It is a unique blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Syrah, Syrah, Grenache, Petite Verdot, Mourvèdre, Merlot and Mission varietals. We took 2 bottles of this great wine home with us along with a bottle of smooth and sensational Buena Vista Port. After our tasting, we enjoyed a great lunch at El Dorado Kitchen overlooking the charming Sonoma square. Fresh oysters, Seared Ahi Tuna sandwich, crispy French Fries, and warm churros with caramel sauce made for a great ending to a special day. Rams Hills Golf Club –
The Clubhouse with Panoramic Window Views
A Rare Tom Fazio Public Track By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012
The Ram Welcomes
If You Go:
R
ams Hill Golf Course, one of the few Tom Fazio designed courses open to the public, opened in 2008. Fazio created a jewel on 3100 acres in the desert just outside of Borrego Springs, California. The seemingly remote resort is an hour and a half northeast of San Diego and an hour southeast of the Palm Springs area with a private airstrip just 10 minutes away. Over 15 years there were three different owners and two bankruptcies. Previously a 36-hole private club, a 2013 rescue returned Rams Hill its original glory. Rams Hill reopened as a stunning 18-hole public play facility. The Clubhouse is simple but adequate. It blends nicely into the surrounding desert terrain. Enjoy the warm dry desert breezes with the wrap-around open-air patio. Limited hotels options exist in the small town of Borrego Springs, CA, but three unique stay & play resort/retreat options are available nearby. It’s an easy drive from the Coachella Valley desert north or San Diego south. Golf Crest House on the 15th hole is an option for larger groups. We stayed at the historic La Casa del Zorro Resort & Spa. The historic inn originally opened in 1937 and hosted many celebrities including Presidents Nixon and Reagan.
Course – Rams Hill comprises a single eighteen-hole golf course. Rates – From $125 to $170 Location – Borrego Springs, California, an hour and a half northeast of San Diego and an hour southeast of the Palm Springs area. Lodging – Unique resort retreat stay & play partners nearby include the Historic luxury at the La Casa del Zorro Resort & Spa, the infamous Happy Days Estate, and the Borrego Springs Resort. Quintessential Golf (https://www.quintessentialgolf.com) A source of golf travel inspiration, Quintessential Golf online magazine spotlights the most spectacular, enduring and scenic courses, resorts and golf adventures. Written from a players point-of-view, articles include magnificent high-resolution course images. Brought to you by Chuck Fox, single-digit golfer, writer and photographer based in Danville, California, he is fulfilling his passion and dream to play, photograph and share the romance and beauty of golf throughout North America.
The course provides even the most accomplished golfer a stern test especially from the 7232-yard back tees with a 75.0 rating & 141 slope. Despite five sets of tees, each hole strategy is maintained giving the course a unique character. Eight holes incorporate water hazards. Nestled in the Anza Borrego State Park, natural elevation changes, well-groomed fairways, lakes, and waterfalls compliment the distant mountain vistas. Warm winds vary in intensity. Rough is relatively short, consistent and lush. The fairways are ideal and not cut too tight. The greens are immaculate. Consistently ranked #1 or #2 in San Diego County, this Top #10 Southern California course always has the top greens rating of Public Courses. Firm sand mixed with groomed native shrubs and light grasses populate the area beyond the first cut. Hence, errant shots incur less than penalizing lies. The six thousandfoot peaks of the Santa Rosa Mountains are visible from many holes. Customer service is outstanding, value is excellent, course conditioning is superb, and greens are immaculate. And did I mention they have Titleist Pro V1 on the practice range? This gem is one to one and one-half hours from San Diego or the Palm Springs area, but the adventure is worth the trip.
