Lieutenant Schultz has been with the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff for nearly 23 years, beginning his career in March 1999. As a deputy, he worked a variety of assignments, including the Martinez Detention Facility (MDF), county patrol, contract City of San Ramon, and Coroner Investigator. In 2010 he was promoted to sergeant and returned to the MDF as a supervisor. After one year, he transferred to the Patrol Division where he worked in the contract City of Oakley and county patrol. After nearly 7 years as a patrol sergeant, he transferred to the Law Enforcement Training Center where he was the Police Academy Coordinator. In 2018 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and became the Director of the Police Academy. He remained at the Academy until he was selected as the Blackhawk Police Chief. In addition to his many assignments, Lieutenant Schultz was a member of the Sheriff’s Department’s S.W.A.T. team for 18 years, serving as an operator, team leader, and team commander. Prior to his career in law enforcement, Lieutenant Schultz attended Sacramento State

University on a football scholarship, where he earned his degree in Criminal Justice. Lieutenant Schultz is married to his wife Mandy (who is a kindergarten teacher), and the two of them have a 16-yearold son and a 14-year-old daughter. In his off time, he enjoys watching his daughter play on her travel softball team and fishing with his son. In addition to spending time with his family, he enjoys exercising, playing guitar, and golfing.

his year Anjani and Vijaya are celebrating 25 years of marriage, and they can’t wait for another 25. Anjani (husband) met Vijaya when he was doing a fourth year away rotation in India from Georgetown University, and he says it was love at first sight. “I knew that Vijaya was the one because she had a wonderful style of conversation. When she explained how she struggled to care for neonates, Anjani knew this was the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Vijaya’s sincerity, conviction, and compassion were her hallmarks.” Vijaya was drawn to Anjani’s simplicity and his mom’s kindness. The couple were engaged for seven months before they were married. “We used to speak and write letters every day to keep connected. Luckily, Anjani’s surgical program director’s assistant was touched by Anjani’s recent engagement and gave him December off to get married. We’ve been married for 25 years and I can’t wait for another 25 more,” says Vijaya. The couple were both born in India. Vijaya did her schooling in Africa where her parents were both successful gynecologists. Anjani was eight years old when his family moved to the United States. His dad worked at Hunt-Wesson where he was instrumental in developing Hunt-Wesson’s many flavors of Orville Redenbacher’s popcorn. Anjani grew up in Fullerton, California. Anjani graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Biochemistry from UCLA in 1992. He went on to receive an MD from Georgetown University Medical School in 1996, and Postgraduate Surgery Training (1996-2003) at UCLA along with post-doctoral research at CalTech (19982000). Anjani and Vijaya are both specialized in Vascular Medicine and the care of symptomatic varicose veins. Anjani mentors and loves to teach premedical students, medical students, and physician assistants. He also works as a clinical instructor at Touro University and Stanford University. He has published 20 research papers while in training and continues to publish a few papers/abstracts annually. Vijaya attended medical school in India where her research was in the care of sick newborns. She did post-doctoral research on fetal alcohol syndrome and published a paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences while at CalTech in 1998-2000. She completed her internal medicine training at USC from 2000-2003. She is very sought after by patients with enlarged veins, venous stasis ulcers, and painful swelling of the legs. She has a new practice locally in Pleasanton.

A daughter and son complete the family. Their daughter, Shivani, is 22 years old and recently graduated from Harvard University with a degree in Human Developmental and Regenerative Biology with a minor in Global Health and Health Policy. She completed an Honors Thesis that used computational biology to understand epigenetic regulation in Acute Myeloid Leukemia. She recently presented her work at the American College of Surgeons meeting on factors that impact how patients make decisions about vaccination. She coordinates her work with the Merced County Public Health department to improve vaccination in the Central Valley. Their son, Ashish, is 18 years old. He is a second year student at Stanford University where he is studying Bioengineering. He is very interested in teaching, learning Mandarin, and coding. He loves to travel and do fun activities with his friends on the weekends. When not pursuing their rewarding careers, Anjani enjoys playing golf, tennis, reviewing mathematics (he has taken up review of calculus), playing Age of Empires, and running. He recently completed the Napa half-marathon in two hours and fourteen minutes. Anjani devotes 10% of his clinical time to help underserved and under insured patients with free or reduced-cost care. He is active at multiple organizations in the Central Valley and donates his time, expertise, and resources to help organizations succeed in caring for the community. Vijaya loves spending time with her children when she isn’t working. She also enjoys ladies nights with her friends, watching movies, and playing with the family dog, a 2-year-old Labrador named Onyx. She recently started playing cards with the ladies in Blackhawk, which she enjoys. Along with Anjani she is a runner as well and recently completed her second 5k race in Sonoma. Her parents live with the family, and she cherishes her time with them.

Having family close by is what drew the Thakur family to Blackhawk. “We ended up in Blackhawk due to our closeness to Anjani’s sister, Pinky, and B r o t h e r- i n - l a w, Kish Jha, who have lived in Blackhawk for almost 25 years. Anjani’s niece, Samta, and her husband, Akshiv Malhotra, a hematologyoncologist, also live here. Over the years, as we visited Kish and Pinky, we met really kind people who were very interested in our well being and decided we would like to call Blackhawk home also,” says Vijaya.

sense of community. Owning a home here has impacted us emotionally — it grounded us. This community has a different feel, like we are part of a community. We’re surrounded by people who are good-hearted and good-willed, who look out for each other. We love how welcoming Blackhawk is. There was something that called us to this area, and to this house. We just had to be here. We share this home with Vijaya’s 80-yearold retired parents, Jo and Raj, and her younger sister, Priyanka. When we signed the papers and got the keys, the first thing we said to each other was, ‘This is such a magical feeling’, says Anjani.

They moved to the Eagle Ridge subdivision in March of last year. “We love how Blackhawk has a small-town quaintness, but there’s also energy here. Another draw for our family is the area’s diversity and Blackhawk’s

Tummy Tuck Surgery:

Say Goodbye to Your Quarantine 15 ByDr8Stephen8J Ronan6CAS6 MDF Bpackhawkpas…c P SurgeryandMedSpa

P

atients that consult in our office for abdominoplasty (more commonly known as a tummy tuck) typically complain of fatty areas, stretched or loose skin, potential hernias and weakened abdominal walls, along with lower abdominal skin that is resistant to tightening through diet and exercise. We are seeing more and more patients suffering from the repercussions of weight fluctuation following quarantine. Poor sleep patterns, changes in dietary habits and exercise routines, high stress and anxiety have sparked what we and others playfully call “the Quarantine 15”.

abdominal wall back into its normal, unstretched position without being surgically repaired. Tummy tucks are performed in our fully accredited surgery center, here in Blackhawk, several times each week. The use of a slow-release, long-acting anesthetic, combined with surgical techniques to allow for quicker healing, permits our patients to have an overall positive experience. After surgery, patients are released home to begin their recovery the same day. Within a matter of weeks, swelling begins to dissipate and patients are left with a more beautifully contoured midsection.

This comes at a unique time as advancements in tummy tuck and liposuction surgery have created an opportunity for those seeking surgery, to be able to recover quickly, with minimal scarring, while focusing on a more holistic approach. Over the years we have completed thousands of abdominoplasties and we were the first practice in the Bay Area to implement the drainless tummy tuck procedure.

Tummy Tuck surgery is often enhanced with other procedures such as high-definition liposuction to highlight the muscular contours for a more athletic core, along with breast augmentation and/or breast lift. The best way to determine if you are a suitable candidate for abdominoplasty or any other surgical procedure is to schedule a complimentary consultation where we can review the options together and answer all your questions. If you are interested in learning more, please contact our office at 925.736.5757. Thanks! We look forward to hearing from you!

Family Adventure Walks By Beth Grusenski

Our family has gone on many walks over the last two years. The vitamin D, fresh air and exploring has helped to keep us active and sane. Since the neighborhood only offers so many routes, we make every attempt to keep the children interested with different activities.

COUNTING WALK: Pick something before your walk to count.

SCAVENGER HUNT WALK: With a little creativity, we come up

stretch of our route and bring bags along to clean up the trash as we go.

with several things we are all looking for before we head out the door. Alternatively, there are countless outdoor scavenger hunts available online that can be printed free of charge.

Spend the whole walk counting that thing (think mailboxes, birds’ nests, black cars, runners/walkers, colorful front doors, etc).

CLEANUP WALK: At least once a year we pick a particularly messy

CHOOSE-YOUR-ROUTE WALK: At every corner of our walk,

a different person gets to decide which direction we turn, including the ability to turn around. Sometimes this means hilariously walking the same stretch over and over until someone steps in and changes our direction.

COLOR WALK: We dress in a color of our choosing (either all matching or different) and then keep our eyes open for all the things we see that are that color. Some colors lend themselves to longer lists than others!

MAP-READING WALK: Print a map of your neighborhood and

create a route before you leave. Give one or more child the responsibility of reading the map and following the route.

CARDINAL DIRECTION PRACTICE WALK: Find something

to help orient your child to their surroundings (in our neck of the woods we know the largest lake around is always to our east). Practice using that landmark to know which direction you are walking. Reorient yourselves every time to turn to practice knowing north, south, east and west.

TREASURE BOX WALK: Allow your child to bring along a small

box (like a matchbox) and fill it with treasures from the walk. You might be surprised at the tiniest details that they notice, appreciate and decide to treasure!

Gandona Estate:

A Must Do Napa Experience ByMikeL8McCopgan6

M

anuel Pires has farming in his blood and is living his “Dream”. A Connecticut native, originally born in Dorio Valley, Portugal, he made his fortune in guard tour and key management systems. The story of Gandona is rooted in transforming the land into something extraordinary. The site is located on prestigious Prichard Hill with 120 acres and sensational views of Lake Hennessy and the Napa Valley. The winery was completed in 2010 and wines are barrel-aged in the caves located within Pritchard Hill’s rocky interior. Renowned winemaker Phillipe Melka crafts the Gandona wines. Wine neighbors include cult wines Colgin and Chappellette. The name Gandona was Manuel’s grandfather’s nickname as known by villagers. He did many acts of “kindness” for the locals in his hometown. In English the word gandona translates to ‘humble man’. Our hosts were Estate Director Peter Greerty and owner Manuel Pires. We began with a stroll around this heavenly property enjoying a glass of Rose Cabernet Franc. We then moved to the elegant tasting room with sensational views of Lake Hennessy. Part of the charm of the tasting room in the winery is the black and white stone flooring patterned in a wave. It is a pattern that was inspired from 1849 in Lisbon’s Rossio Square. This wave pattern alternates black-and-white waves composed of small stones cut and laid by hand by a team of craftsmen from Portugal.

For over 25 years, The Framé Group, Inc. has been the firm of choice for leading litigators, corporate counsel, sports franchises, public figures, multinational corporations, the United States Department of Justice, and Fortune 500 companies.

We tasted the 2017 Chardonnay Encosta, 2018 Meia (5%Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon), 2016 Encosta (76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petite Verdot) and 2016 and 2012 Gandona (100% Cabernet Sauvignon). Each of these wines were crafted to the high winemaking standards of Phillipe Melka. We completed the tasting with the 2013 Gandona Fraga Do Arco Port. It had the aromatics of black currants, raspberries and hints of herbs and licorice. We enjoyed all of them and took a bottle of each home with us The wines reflect the beauty of this sensational piece of property. It is a ‘must do’ to add to your Napa Wine Experiences. Le capitane Etienne Melcher shared mementos of Mardi Gras and gifted Niners authentic Krewe of Cork necklaces. Tables were bedazzled with feathers, masks, and beads. Dessert featured NOLA’s signature King cakes delivered by Linda Marver. Shaun McCarty dressed the part as Niners golf pro King for a Day to announce results and congratulate winners. C’est bon! rnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge is an iconic landmark in the world of golf. Playing this golf course is one of the best experiences in golf. Arnold Palmer purchased the full-service resort in 1976 and made it his winter home. A trip to Bay Hill Club allows us to pay our respects to the King after his passing in 2017. The courses restrict play to members and guests of the lodge. Arnold Palmer memorabilia fill the lodge. A tremendous twenty-seven-hole layout comprises three nines - Challenger, Champion, and Charger. The Challenger and Champion nines comprise the 18-hole course that hosts the Arnold Palmer Invitational on the PGA Tour. The championship layout is consistently intriguing with lakes bordering on twelve holes and over 100 bunkers. Bermuda grass greens are raised, tiered and undulating and provide a

consistent challenge. Course conditioning is superb. Penalizing rough puts a premium on hitting fairways. Multiple holes require forced carries over water providing exciting risk/reward opportunities. The fee includes a forecaddie for the foursome. You can also hire a private caddie. A medium length Par4, Hole #3 requires a precise approach shot over the water wellguarded by bunkers and rocks left. The second shot on the Par5 Hole #5 (like Hole #3) provides an excellent risk/reward challenge. Aim as far left as you dare to shorten your approach shot into this Par5. There is something special about playing the same course as the professionals, when you can do it either before or after the tournament, with the grandstands up. You can almost hear the applause when you hit a good shot. More water to navigate on the approach shot to the Par4 Hole #8. The plateau green requires precision. The tournament grandstand backdrop evokes that special feeling. Large greens at Bay Hill Club test your lag putting. Well placed fairway bunkers with great sand are penalizing. The bunker on the right side of thirteen requires a short iron over water to a plateau green fronted by rocks. One of the most spectacular Par3 closing holes in all of golf is the seventeenth. Navigate 150 yards to 221 yards over water to a wellbunkered green. TV viewers recognize the closing hole on the championship course. After a drive that evades the water right on this long Par 4, players need to fit a shot into the narrow green to have a chance at birdie. Long and left is the typical bailout.

Food Bank Announces

Biggest Match in 47-year History ByJoepSjostrom6ood F BankpresidentandOEC

Local foundation supports 2 Million Meal Challenge The Behring Global Educational Foundation (Behring Foundation), a global organization with local roots, is fighting hunger in the Bay Area by providing the biggest donation match to date – half a million dollars – in the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano’s 47-year history. The $500,000 match – named the “2 Million Meal Challenge” – comes at a crucial time, as the cost of living increases and the effects of the pandemic linger for many, especially the most vulnerable members of our community. Since last year, food prices have risen 5.2%, with the cost of meat and healthy proteins up by nearly 10%, according to the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers. When paired with rising gas and utility prices, putting food on the table is becoming nearly impossible for many. Through May 31, every donation will be matched dollar for dollar up to $500,000 and every dollar provides at least two meals. If the match is met, the 1 million in funds will provide 2 million nutritious meals, including fruits, vegetables, meat and proteinrich items, for neighbors in need. That’s enough to purchase three days’ worth of food for each of the 250,000 people served by the Food Bank every month.

Don Williams, Behring Global Educational Foundation board member, comments: “The Food Bank’s work is especially important during these challenging times when so many have lost jobs, wages, and even family members. By making a sizable contribution, we hope this will motivate others to join us and make a serious dent in hunger in our community. The Foundation knows that to end hunger worldwide, we must start right here at home. We hope this opportunity will unite our community behind this shared mission.” Based in Danville, the Behring Foundation was developed upon the success of the Wheelchair Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Kenneth E. Behring in 2000, which is now a subdivision of the Behring Global Educational Foundation. This marks the foundation’s largest contribution and first matching challenge to the Food Bank. Joel Sjostrom, Food Bank president and CEO, says: “This gift is breathtaking in both its generosity and its ability to make a significant difference in the levels of food insecurity in the areas we serve. The Behring Foundation has made an incredible impact on the global stage, and we are proud to partner with them as we fight hunger right here in their local community.”

Celebrate Spring with Concierge Catering ByToriDraegeraff6 P DraegeresMarket

S

pring is here, and with the fresh season comes the promise of fresh flavors. Spring also heralds celebrated holidays like Passover, Easter, and Mother’s Day. We sat down with Draeger’s concierge Catering Consultant Marcus Coy to ask him about his catering recommendations for those hosting spring events.

A: The website is a fantastic tool. Sometimes you don’t know what will appeal to you until you see a picture. Most of the time, customers already have a good idea of what they want to present to their guests, and by visiting the website they can see what fits their vision. But the difference between ordering online and ordering with me is the personal service. When customers call and speak with me, they don’t just have to place an order, they can create a proposal.

Q: Marcus, tell us about your background with Draeger’s Markets. A: Wow, I’ve been with Draeger’s for 34 years this coming October. I brought six years of cake decorating experience with me, and was the second person hired when Draeger’s created their bakery kitchens. I helped design many of the current pastries and cakesthe chocolate panels that decorate the outside of Draeger’s Double Chocolate Mousse were my decorating idea!

Q: What’s the difference between and a proposal? A: A proposal can be thought of as a moving target. It is a quote that is easily changed if you find you have more people coming (or if someone cancels), I can make serving suggestions, and I have direct knowledge of ingredients and allergens, which is helpful when picking food for a group.

Q: You sound extremely experienced with the company. What do you think sets Draeger’s apart from other places you can order food? A: I consider myself a foodie. Everything we make is made with no additives or preservatives, and it’s all made from scratch. We even smoke our own hams- they’re outstanding, the best I’ve had on the Peninsula.

Q: How do your potential clients reach you? A: I am available to answer product questions, create proposals, or place orders Tuesday through Saturday, 9am -6pm via email (mcoy@draegers.com) and phone (650-244-6521).

Q: Now that you are Draeger’s concierge Catering Consultant, can you describe how you assist people? A: I am here to help people with considerations for different meal components, portions sizes, dietary restrictions, and finding options for picky people. Q: It seems many people are opting to order online now, what is the difference between ordering on Draeger’s website and calling you directly?

Blackhawk Women’s Golf Newsletter Heard from the Green ByLaurieBruns6Residentsince In addition to being excellent golfers, swift players and yet, strangely humble, BWGA’ers are experts at choosing the most darling pets. Here we are getting our pups off of the papers and into the papers, or rather, magazines. The BWGA was well represented at the Blackhawk Scotch Cup Tournament on March 5. Overall Low Gross Lydia and Amy Shell. Overall Low Net Lynn Egan and Kathy Giroux. Andrea Petralia, who had two hole in ones inside of two months, tells her story. My first hole in one was on Falls hole #4 on November 22, 2021. It was very exciting because I hit the pin and could hear the ball drop in the cup. I was a bit apprehensive

because I thought the sound could have been the ball bouncing off the flag stick, but there it was in the cup!! Blackhawk gives you book credit if you have hole in one insurance, so I bought Taylor Made clubs with my winnings. When the golf clubs arrived, I could not score well with them. On January 17, 2022, I was playing Falls and complaining about the golf clubs the entire round until I reached hole 13. I pulled out my iron and the ball hit the front of the green and rolled right in the cup! I now love my new clubs. Congratulations to February Charm Day winners. The photo this month is only of the few winners who could stay, so after a long frost delay and chilly temperatures....

Navigating Home Financing During Divorce

ByToddGapde6CrossCountryMortgage6CL8

Home Financing Customized for Family Law One of the most stressful events in a family’s life is divorce, and one of the biggest points of contention is what to do with the family home, especially if there are children in the picture who want to stay in their respective schools and the remaining spouse does not have sufficient income to refinance the existing mortgage in their name only. Conventional lending rules require at least six months of on-time payments of the spousal and child support, and the six months don’t begin until after the divorce has been finalized with the courts. This could be 12-24 months after the initial separation was filed. Fortunately, there is a resolution: Introducing the NINE Loan, a revolutionary home loan based on common sense underwriting, a fast and simple home loan solution that does not require any income or employment for owner-occupied refinance or purchase transactions.

The NINE loan allows the remaining spouse to refinance in their name only and possibly even get cash-out to pay the departing spouse their share of the equity… before the spousal and child support are usable for Conventional financing. The departing spouse can then purchase a new home without the old mortgage affecting their ability to qualify in the future. Consider this revolutionary home financing that solves an ageless challenge for families going through a divorce. Please visit me online at www.TheNINELoan.com or more information. When you are ready, you can book a Confidential Strategy Session online at http://galde.co/css or call my cell at 925-381-8190. Equal Housing Opportunity. All loans subject to underwriting approval. Certain restrictions apply. Call for details. CrossCountry Mortgage, LLC. NMLS3029 (www.nmlsconsumeraccess.org).

The Northern California Kit Car Club ByDavidTom6ResidentSince

T

he Northern California Kit Car Club (NCKCC) held its Annual Handcrafted Car Show at the Blackhawk Museum on September 12, 2021. The NCKCC, founded in 1983, is a non-profit formed to promote learning about handcrafted cars. The club enjoys the camaraderie of fellow members, showing their cars at shows and ultimately aiming to be a repository of knowledge on hand-built vehicles. A popular refrain among members is that kit cars are never ‘done,’ and it shows from the dedication involved in the initial build to the meticulous care and maintenance these beauties receive. Have you seen a 1934 Mercedes Benz 500K or 427 Cobra cruising through town? Lucky you

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue ByJanineCoppins6Bpackhawkresidentsince

Wallace - East County Animal Shelter Dog Meet Wallace, an East County Animal Shelter resident looking for his forever home. Wallace has been a FAVORITE OF TVAR VOLUNTEERS - from our dog walkers to our photographers. One of our photographers commented that while Wallace looks so serious in his pictures - he is really just excited about getting a treat. He is a fun-loving, sweet boy. He is about 5 years old and weighs just under 60 pounds. He walks nicely on a leash and is generally happy to just hang out with his person. Every now and then he gets a case of the “zoomies” and will run around the yard and play and come back to you to get some love. Wallace is neutered and vaccinated and waiting to find his new forever home. You can meet Wally at the East County Animal Shelter, 4595 Gleason Drive in Dublin and see more pictures of him by going to www.tvar.org.

Tri-Valley Animal R escue (T VAR ) Giving them Another Chance TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating just short of 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs. All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens and the Public..

Little Grey - Tri-Valley Animal R escue Kitten Program Little Grey’s favorite thing to do is play pass with her rainbow ball. She will roll over onto her back and pass the ball back and forth with her foster mom. She also enjoys a good petting session. She will lay down in her bed and purr as she has her chin and ears rubbed. Grey’s future family should be willing to be very patient with her while she gets used to her new family and home. Grey used to be a feral kitten and is still very shy. But she has become a lot more comfortable with her foster family, although it took a lot of time and love. She can become comfortable in a new home with time, respect, and patience. Grey is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated and tested negative for FIV/FeLV

TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes. Po-tay-to Po-tah-to: Fun Facts About Everyone’s Favorite Vegetable By Amanda Griffin

The potato, also commonly referred to as tater, tattie, and spud, is an integral part of the average North American diet. Potatoes are consumed for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and as a snack. The average American, in fact, eats more than one hundred pounds of potatoes each year. Traceable back to approximately 200 B.C., this nightshade root vegetable was first cultivated in the Andes Mountains of Bolivia and Peru by the Inca people. Potatoes didn’t make it to North America until the mid-fifteenth century. Today, after centuries of selective breeding, there are close to 4,000 varieties of potatoes, including those commercially available. So, what does that mean for cooking? In the culinary realm, potato varieties are generally differentiated by their starch content and waxiness which determines the cooking methods each variety is best suited for. In their raw state, potatoes are nearly 80% water, and relatively low in protein, fat, and fiber, so they are generally not considered a significant contributor to the recommended daily portions of fruit and vegetables. The cooking method controls the reaction between the starch and water content. As a high-starch potato bakes, the starch inside the potato absorbs water from the other parts and swells, leaving a mealy, dry texture. Low starch potatoes, also referred to as boiling potatoes, do not absorb as much water, allowing the cell structure to remain intact, and the potato to hold its shape. When potatoes are deep or pan-fried, or roasted, the starch on the surface expands, sealing the surface and creating a crisp crust that keeps the interior moist.

Most Common Potato Types and Their Recommended Uses Russet and Idaho: high starch content, low moisture, best for baked and mashed potatoes, French fries or hash browns. The secret to the perfect fries or hash browns is drying the pieces thoroughly before putting them into the hot oil. Moist potatoes absorb extra grease which makes for greasy and soggy fries and hash browns that won’t crisp up. Yukon gold and yellow Finn: medium starch, don’t get as fluffy as Russets, but have a very buttery flavor and creamy texture when cooked. These potatoes are multipurpose and work well for pan-fried potato dishes, potato salads, and au gratin dishes.

Red-skinned and round whites: considered waxy, these potatoes have a low starch and higher sugar content. This makes them ideal for boiling, roasting, and sautéing because the sugar content turns a delicious brown during cooking. While the inner potato remains moist and holds its shape, the outer browns and crisps up nicely. Fingerlings: these cute finger-sized potatoes are kind of the best of all worlds. They are low starch with a waxy texture and a thin skin that holds together very well, but they also have the creamy texture and buttery flavor like the medium starch variety, so they are well suited to baking, boiling, steaming, frying, roasting, grilling, sautés, au gratin dishes, salads, soups, and stews. Purple or blue potatoes: an heirloom potato, they have a grayish blue to purple skin and inky looking flesh with a very delicate flavor. This variety is low in starch, and much like the fingerlings, they are suited to boiling, steaming, roasting, frying, mashing, sautés, in soups, stews, salads, and au gratin dishes. The only thing they aren’t necessarily great for is as a stand-alone baked potato because of both their texture and their delicate flavor. Quick Reference by Starch Content High Starch: baking, frying, mashing Medium Starch: steaming, baking, roasting, grilling, salads, and au gratin dishes Low Starch: boiling, roasting, grilling, sautés, stews, salads, au gratin dishes Quick Reference by Cook Method Baking: Russet, Idaho, long white, Peruvian, fingerling Boiled: Red, round whites, fingerling, purple/blue Steaming: Reds, round whites, fingerling, purple/blue Fried: Russets, Idaho, Yukon gold, yellow Finn, red, round whites, fingerling, purple/blue Roasted: Red, russets, Idaho, Peruvian, long whites, purple/blue, round whites, fingerling, purple/blue Mashed: Russet, Idaho, long white, Yukon gold, yellow Finn, purple/blue Salads: Yukon gold, yellow Finn, fingerling, purple/blue Au gratin: Yukon gold, yellow Finn, fingerling, purple/blue BLACKHAWK LIVING CA 39

grew up outside of Boston in Concord, Massachusettes. Winters were long, cold and lots of snow. I remember very clearly when spring was about to arrive, tiny little crocuses in purple and yellow would start to poke up – usually covered by one more light snow around the first of April. Northern California seems to have an atypical approach to spring, especially when you get 70-degree weather in January, but the signs of spring show up every year. As I look around right now our cherry tree is in full bloom with tiny white flowers. With every gust of wind, a flurry of white lands on the ground making it look much like the snow of my childhood. As you look around what are your favorite signs of spring? For the Blackhawk Bloomers we are celebrating spring with hikes in the hills and tremendous guest speakers. Last month the Drunken Botanist talked about all the plants and herbs that went into making a delicious old fashion (personal favorite cocktail of mine!). And this Month Tara Wharton of the Freckled Florist will be demonstrating the art of spring floral arrangements. Every month holds something fun, new and unexpected for the Blackhawk Bloomers.
