Meet the Alhamadsheh Family

Born a few years apart in different parts of the world, Mamoun and Shuchi truly believe the saying “matches are made in heaven.” Shuchi grew up in a small town in the Northern part of India, while Mamoun was raised in Jordan. After finishing their undergraduate degrees in Pharmacy, they both decided to pursue graduate studies in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in the USA and, somehow, ended up at the same school, in the same lab at the same time. “We both ended up at University of Toledo in Ohio, What are the odds! Mamoun was a very hardworking, kind and humble student. He moved the electrons on those carbons on the whiteboard in such an amazing way that all the professors were amazed by him. He had this amazing charisma and great sense of humor, which made me fall in love with him instantly, and I knew he was the one. The first time we had a get-together for our lab, I made some cucumber salad. During the party, Mamoun mentioned that the cucumber salad was one of the best snacks there. And that was it, he stole my heart,” says Shuchi.

The couple were married in a small marriage ceremony in Toledo, OH in 2005. After finishing their PhD degrees, they moved to Portland, OR for Postdoctoral Fellowships. After three years in Portland, they made the move to the Bay Area. Having lived in Menlo Park and Stockton, they decided to settle down in Blackhawk in 2021. “It was during Covid times, and Blackhawk seemed like the perfect place because of its wide variety of activities for everyone. We are all so glad that we did the move,” says Mamoun.

Mamoun finished his undergrad in Pharmacy in Jordan, and then PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from University of Toledo, Ohio. He then finished his Postdoctoral fellowships from Portland State University and his research fellowship from Stanford University. During his research at Stanford, he discovered a drug for Transthyretin Amyloid Cardiomyopathy, a fatal disease that affects the heart. Stanford University patented Mamoun’s discovery. In 2016, Mamoun and his colleagues at Stanford started a company called Eidos Therapeutics that went public in 2018 and moved the drug discovered by Mamoun through the different phases of clinical trials. Mamoun is also a Professor at Thomas J. Long College of Pharmacy and runs a research lab with a number of graduate students.

Shuchi completed her undergrad in Pharmacy in India and PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from University of Toledo, OH. She did her Postdoctoral fellowship at Portland State University in Molecular Biology, where her research was studying microorganisms that produce natural

products, which are used as medicines against different diseases. After finishing her Postdoc, she practiced Pharmacy.

“Being a Pharmacist gave me a chance to be in direct contact with patients on a regular basis, something I always wanted. It gave me a chance to give back to the community. My previous experience of designing my own experiments during my PhD, helped me manage one of the busiest CVS Pharmacies. After working for 10 years as a Pharmacy Manager, I decided to take a break from work, to spend more time with my daughters. Currently, I am an Adjunct Professor at Thomas J. Long College of Pharmacy and involved with research in my husband’s lab,” says Shuchi.

Two daughters complete the family. Maya is 12 years old and currently attends The Dorris-Eaton School. Her favorite subjects include writing, math, and art. Her hobbies are baking, arts and crafts, playing the violin, and riding horses. Maya also participates on the Blackhawk Swim Team, The Hox. She enjoys trying new cuisines and is always willing to have an adventure.

Hana is 15 years old and attends The College Preparatory School. She is also on the debate team and the varsity tennis team at her school. Her hobbies include tennis, baking, playing the violin, reading and traveling. Hana has played violin in many different youth orchestras and symphonies. Hana also enjoys horseback riding and is currently taking lessons.

“We are a close-knit family with my parents living with us also. Hana and Maya love to spend time with their grandparents and enjoy learning Indian cooking from my mom. We love to travel, bake, cook, hike, read, craft and socialize,” says Shuchi. Recently, their travels have included Qatar to attend

the World Cup final, France, Italy, China, Austria, Indonesia, Barcelona, Mexico, India and Jordan.

“Baking is another thing that me and my daughters enjoy. Being a chemist, the science behind the fermentation of sourdough always fascinated me. After months of scientific experiments in my kitchen, I can proudly say that in the Alhamadsheh household, we bake our own sourdough bread. Hana and Maya love to bake cakes and cookies, and we are always trying new recipes,” says Shuchi.

Giving back to the community is something the family lives by. Shuchi is on the Board for Children’s Home of Stockton, which provides refuge to at-risk youth and gives them the opportunity to have a normal life in a safe environment. “We also strongly believe in education and have set up scholarship funds for underprivileged students. We do yearly gifts at different educational institutes. Our daughters have done baking sales in Stockton, for the local mosque and are currently involved at MCC (Muslim Community Center) in Pleasanton. Growing up we lived by the motto that even a smile

can be a charity, and seeing my mother, who was a high school history teacher, paying for her students’ tuition who can’t afford them, always inspired me. We want to instill the same values in our daughters,” shares Mamoun and Shuchi.

The Alhamadsheh Family say they feel blessed to call Blackhawk home. “We enjoy our quiet and friendly neighborhood. We love to see all the wildlife during our daily walks. I would not be shy to say that our neighborhood is one of the best that there is. Everyone is so kind and nice, which even makes the daily walks so much more fun. At any point, if one of the neighbors is not feeling well, there will always be someone who will take the initiative to make a meal train list. The advantage of the fitness center, tennis courts, and swimming pool for the girls to be so close is unbeatable. We are so blessed to be in Blackhawk. Thank you our dearest neighbors for being so kind, helpful and friendly. You all are amazing, and we are blessed to have you in our lives.”

Are you getting the most out of your Refrigerator?

Duringthe Superbowl a friend went to grab a beer out of my refrigerator and came back to me Io tell me I was wasting the most valuable space in my fridge by storing beer in the crisper. It got me thinking, what is the purpose of those drawers? Come to find out they’re actually meant for fresh produce and when used correctly can extend the life of your fruits and vegetables.

The crisper drawer can control the humidity which is the amount of air flowing in and out. Shutting the vent shuts out air and produces more humidity – opening the vents allows air to flow more freely. If your drawers don’t have any controls, they are high humidity crispers. So, what goes where? High humidity drawers should contain thin–skinned or leafy vegetables that can lose moisture quickly and wilt. Think herbs, lettuce, asparagus. The low humidity drawer is best for fruits such as apples, pears and stone fruits. Note: never store potatoes with apples as apples produce high levels of ethylene gas which causes potatoes to spoil prematurely.

Now the question is where do I put my beer?

Corvette Summer

Myfirst exposure to the Corvette, the iconic American automobile, was in the movie ‘Corvette Summer.’ Set in the 1970s when Corvettes were groovy, Star Wars’ Mark Hamill displayed an era when high schoolers worked on their cars in shop class. Fast forward to present-day where Corvettes are flashy in a different way. The Northern California Corvette Association (“NCCA”), America’s oldest Corvette Club, brought Vette Magic 46 to the Blackhawk Museum on August 7, 2022. The NCCA began in 1957, just a few years after the Corvette was introduced and has been coming to the Blackhawk Museum for more than a decade. What is your favorite Corvette? To help you decide come see all 8 generations at the Blackhawk Museum on May 6, 2023, for the NCCA’s Legends on Display Car Show. And don’t worry, there is no requirement to have a favorite as you can love them all.

David Tom: I have lived in Danville for 30 years. I retired from the corporate tax world and now pursue a variety of projects that interest me. I have always loved cars and look forward to sharing them with you.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue Giving Them Another Chance

WHISKEY - TVAR FOSTER

DOG PROGRAM

Whiskey looks like a miniature Shepherd but he’s just a little tyke - a Terrier mix, only 6 months old. He is very social and loves to be hugged. He enjoys playing with toys and getting special treats. Whiskey also loves belly rubs and lays his head on your shoulder for hugs. He is also a great couch companion. He would do best in a home with another small breed dog. Whiskey is food motivated which makes it easier to train him. He is crate and puppy pad trained and doing well with housetraining.

Whiskey especially has fun with the keepaway game. This adorable puppy does well with other small dogs and cats in his foster home. He has been neutered, microchipped, dewormed, and is current on his vaccinations.

You can find out more about Whiskey at www.tvar.org

All of TVAR’s foster dogs and pups like Roddy and Kira live in foster homes till adopted. Foster families get to know each dog’s personality and needs in a home setting - allowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs and adopters thrive!

TABITHA

- TVAR FOSTER

KITTEN PROGRAM

Tabitha is a very vocal, quirky, and affectionate kitten available for adoption in a Tri-Valley Animal Rescue foster home. She is very passionate about rubbing on her foster mom’s legs as well as loving on her foster cat siblings, Farris and Shiloh. Sometimes you can hear her meowing from the other room, asking her foster family to come to join her in her adventures. TVAR

gives Tabitha and other kittens like her a second chance at finding a forever family. Tabitha is spayed, microchipped, and tested negative for FIV/FeLV.

TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes

TRI-VALLEY ANIMAL RESCUE (TVAR) -

GIVING THEM ANOTHER CHANCE

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving hundreds and hundreds of animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

All of TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted.

We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens and the Public.

Chow Bishop Ranch: Born from the Culture of the Bay Area

After being a fan of Chow in Lafayette and Danville, I was thrilled to find the same owner was opening Chow at City Center. A night out at City Center is always a great vibe, and Chow fits right in.

We started with custom cocktails recommended by Chow’s general manager, Mark Scott. His picks did not disappoint.

Next we went with soup, appetizers and freshly made pizza. The restaurant was designed to make you feel like you are eating in a garden, with organic produce and lots of vegan and gluten free options on the menu. Make sure you order the ginger cake for dessert. It’s our favorite!

There’s also a unique market that features extensive graband-go foods along with fresh produce, groceries, wines, beers + alcoholic & non-alcoholic beverages.

Next time you are at City Center, we highly recommend stopping by Chow!

Potato Cutlet in Tomato Sauce

Serves 6 Preheat oven to 300-degree F. Baking dish: 10-inch in diameter x 2-inch deep

• 2 large onions, grated

• 1-pound golden potato, partial cooked, peeled, grated

• 1 teaspoon sea salt OR to taste

• ¼ teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground

• ½ sweet jalapeno, chopped

• ¼ teaspoon coriander, ground

• 1 teaspoon turmeric, ground

• ½ teaspoon cumin seeds, ground

• ½ teaspoon dried basil

• 4 cloves of garlic, grated

• ½ cup garbanzo flour, lightly toasted (please see note)

• ¼ cup olive oil

• 2 cups red tomato-basil sauce, heated and concentrated to 1½ cups

Garnish: A few basil sprigs and radishes

Use food processor to grate the onions. Squeeze out liquid and discard.

Combine all ingredients except tomato sauce and olive oil in food processor (onions, potatoes, salt, black pepper, jalapeno, coriander, turmeric, cumin, basil, garlic, and garbanzo flour). Pulse about 8 times, until ingredients become cohesive and form one lump. Remove ingredients from food processor.

Take about 4 tablespoons of onion-potato mixture and make flat round patties (cutlets). Fry cutlets in heated olive oil for 3 minutes on each side until light golden-brown; watch carefully to prevent burning.

Concentrate tomato basil sauce and add to baking dish. Arrange fried cutlet on top of sauce. Place in the oven and bake for 10 minutes or until done. Garnish with basil and radishes serve with “eggplant relish”.

Note: Lightly toasting garbanzo flour (chickpea) for 2-3 minutes in 270 degree-F oven improves its taste.

Thinking of Moving? Buy Your Next Home BEFORE You Sell.

It is easier than you think!

The idea of buying a new home before selling your current home can seem daunting at first. However, it can also have significant benefits that are worth considering. In this article, we’ll discuss some of the advantages of buying your next home before selling your current one.

More time to find your dream home

When you’re looking to buy a new home, it can be challenging to find the perfect fit. By purchasing a new home before selling your current one, you give yourself more time to explore different properties, neighborhoods, and amenities without feeling rushed. This way, you can take your time to find the home of your dreams without worrying about the added pressure of having to move out of your current home quickly.

Avoiding temporary housing costs

If you sell your current home before finding a new one, you may find yourself in temporary housing until you can find your next home. This can be expensive and inconvenient, especially if you have a family or pets. By purchasing a new home first, you can avoid these temporary housing costs and move directly into your new home.

Less pressure to accept lower offers

If you’ve already found your new home before selling your current one, you’re in a better position to negotiate with potential buyers. You don’t have to accept lowball offers out of desperation because you have more time to wait for the right offer to come along. This way, you can ensure that you get the best price possible for your current home.

Avoiding a rushed move

Moving is never easy, but it can be especially stressful if you’re rushed to do it. By buying your new home before selling your current one,

you can avoid the stress of having to move quickly. You can take your time to pack, organize, and move at your own pace without worrying about strict deadlines.

Ability to make renovations or repairs

If you buy your new home before selling your current one, you may have the flexibility to make renovations or repairs before moving in. This way, you can ensure that your new home is exactly how you want it before you move in. You also won’t have to deal with the inconvenience of living in a construction zone while you’re making these changes.

Buying your next home before selling your current home may seem like a risky move, but it can actually have significant benefits. By giving yourself more time to find your dream home, avoiding temporary housing costs, and having the flexibility to make renovations, you can ensure that your next move is a smooth and stress-free process. Additionally, with less pressure to accept lower offers and avoiding a rushed move, you can make sure that you get the best price for your current home and enjoy the process of moving into your new one. Mini HOX 2023

The Mini HOX program was created to expose children to the fun and excitement of participating on a recreational swim team and to prepare them to participate on the HOX swim team next year. This program is ideal for young children who enjoy the water but may find it challenging to swim the full length of a 25-yard competition pool.

Please note that Mini HOX is not a learn-to-swim program or a private swim lesson. The program is not appropriate for children who are neither water-safe nor potty-trained (swim diapers are not allowed). If your child does not fulfill the requirements for participation in Mini HOX, private swim one-on-one lessons are available. In an effort to find the best fit for each swimmer, the coaches reserve the right to make adjustments regarding a swimmer’s participation in Mini HOX and to refer them to the appropriate program.

Mini HOX 2023 SPRING CLINIC

The Mini HOX spring practices will be run by Blackhawk Country Club swim instructors and directed by Sean Quackenbush, Head Coach, and Melissa Kaeo, Assistant Coach. The swim instructors will be in the water with the Mini HOX during practice. The program will focus on teaching stroke techniques in all four competitive strokes: backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle as well as other fundamental principles of swimming.

Meet Andrew Brown, Niner’s new golf professional

Andrew Brown grew up in Pleasant Hill with two older brothers. His dad started working at Grayson Woods in Pleasant Hill when he was about 11 years old, where his dad taught golf in the afternoons and ran a junior clinic on Saturday mornings. Andrew would tag along and help with the younger kids. While in high school, he got a job in the golf shop and helped with junior camps over the summer. When he was 20, he was promoted to head golf professional and gained valuable experience that would later help with his golf career.

He decided to join Roddy Ranch Golf Club, which had a full size golf course, and was able to practice and grow his game to the next level. He won his first big golf event in 2013. Grayson Woods closed due to the drought and he and his girlfriend (now his wife) moved to Arizona and began working at Whirlwind Golf Club. There he worked in guest services and was tournament director. He proposed to his girlfriend of 9 years while on a trip to Disneyland. Missing their families, Andrew saw a job posting for Blackhawk CC and was hired to run outside events, run Blackhawkʻs club repair and his newest role as the Ninerʻs golf pro. He convinced his wife, Sarah, to quit her job, and itʻs a family affair as she now works in the BCC golf shop. Welcome Andrew, the Ninerʻs are excited to have you leading our group!

Blackhawk Chorus Updates

Lasertattoo removal is a popular procedure that has been gaining traction in recent years. It is a safe and effective way to remove unwanted tattoos, and it is becoming more and more popular as people realize the benefits of this treatment. At Blackhawk Plastic Surgery and MedSpa, we have been offering laser tattoo removal for years, and we have seen firsthand how effective this treatment can be. In this article, we will discuss the ins and outs of laser tattoo removal, including how it works, what to expect during the procedure, and how to take care of your skin after the treatment.

Laser tattoo removal works by using a highpowered laser to break down the ink particles in the skin. The laser targets the ink particles and breaks them down into smaller pieces, which can then be naturally absorbed by the body.

Laser Tattoo Removal

The laser also triggers the body’s natural healing response, which helps to flush out the broken-down ink particles. Before the procedure, a topical numbing cream may be applied to the skin to help minimize any discomfort. During the treatment, the laser is be aimed at the tattoo, and pulses of light are delivered to the skin. You may feel a slight stinging sensation during the procedure, but most patients find it to be tolerable. The treated area may be swollen and red, and you may experience some minor discomfort. However, this should subside within a few hours to a few days. It is important to follow the aftercare instructions we provide you to ensure proper healing and minimize the risk of complications.

After the treatment, it is also important to keep the treated area clean and dry. You should avoid any activities that may cause excessive sweating or friction, as this can irritate the skin and delay the healing

process. You should also avoid direct sunlight and use a high SPF sunscreen on the treated area if you need to be outside for prolonged periods of time. In some cases, multiple treatments may be necessary to fully remove the tattoo. The number of treatments required will depend on the size, location, and color of the tattoo. During your initial consultation we will recommend a treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs.

Laser tattoo removal is a safe and effective way to remove unwanted tattoos. If you are considering this procedure, it is important to work with a qualified provider who has experience in this area. At Blackhawk Plastic Surgery and MedSpa, we have been providing laser tattoo removal for over 15 years, and we have the knowledge and expertise to help you achieve the results you desire. Call us today at 925-736-5757 to schedule a free consultation and/or to learn more about this laser treatment option.

The Perks of Branding

WITH OUR LOCAL PUBLICATION

Building a robust marketing plan is a challenging endeavor for many business owners. With endless advertising options at your disposal, it’s difficult to determine what type of advertising tools and services are the best for your business. Targeted print and digital branding works together seamlessly to grab the attention of local residents in your neighborhood.

Let’s check out a few perks that come along with branding your business in our publication:

AWARENESS & LOYALTY ORGANIC GROWTH

If you want to become the go-to source for a product or service in the community, you won’t achieve prominence with a sporadic or inconsistent advertising strategy. Branding solutions, such as advertising in our publication, are some of the most powerful ways to build awareness and loyalty for your local business. In today’s world, people want to connect with brands that align with their values — that’s why advertising alongside positive and inspiring stories is the perfect solution for the businesses we work with. Our local readers associate our sponsors with everything good happening in the neighborhood on a monthly basis, which is a huge win for you and your business.

A quick digital ad, coupon mailer or postcard might land you a few new customers, but it’s a costly and unsustainable advertising model for most businesses. To achieve organic and lasting growth, it’s important to brand your business consistently and repetitively to build top-of-mind-awareness in the community.

“Investing in long-term brand marketing means people will recognize and understand your business,” said Carma Levene, Founder of Carma Social. “If it’s done well, you’ll attract your target audience to your brand and spend less on chasing them with advertising.”

THE CREDIBILITY FACTOR

Building awareness adds immense credibility to your brand. Think about the largest brands in the world — McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Apple and Amazon, to name just a few. These companies have earned their credibility over time, not only because of their offerings, but because they have successfully inserted their image and values into your everyday life. Becoming a credible source in the neighborhood is a competitive advantage that will lead to real results.

Diamonds, Sunshine & Wine The Perfect Weekend

“Staycation” in Napa!

The Padis Jewelry and Tasting Room in downtown Napa is quickly becoming the ideal destination for a weekend visit by pairing the experience of fine jewelry shopping, Swiss timepieces, and wine tasting – a little something for everyone! Nestled among First Street’s fantastic restaurants, luxury shopping and tasting rooms, and just down the street from Oxbow Public Market, Padis Jewelry Napa boasts a 4000 sq. ft. jewelry and wine tasting experience, located next to the Andaz hotel.

Less than an hour drive away from Blackhawk, downtown Napa has become the “tasting room capital of the world” with over 55 tasting rooms within a few blocks featuring tasting room experiences with Napa Valley staples such as Alpha Omega and Vineyard 29.

The Napa Padis location features an enormous selection of soughtafter designers like Tacori and Breitling, as well as one of California’s largest collections of Verragio and Forevermark diamonds, which are ethically-sourced and traced from mine to finger.

Additionally, the location offers a first-of-its-kind unique co-branded experience with the Padis Wine Tasting Lounge + Breitling Bar. The lounge shares the story of the Padis wine and Breitling, the top tier Swiss timepiece brand with a number of monumental moments in watch-making history.

The Padis tasting lounge is the first public wine offering for the family. The Padis Vineyards property yields Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot fruit, and the label produces roughly 3000 cases of wine per year. Current offerings include an oak-barreled Chardonnay from Carneros, a red blend called Sintilation – a play on the gemological term “scintillation” which describes the sparkle of a diamond and a nod to the jewelry roots of the Padis family –and the crown jewel, a 100% estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon.

With acclaimed winemaker Robert Foley at the helm of production and regular 90+ point ratings, Padis wine has a classic and timeless Napa Valley profile, with bold cabs, luscious Chardonnays and blends that drink smoothly. The tasting room offers current releases as well as library and reserve tastings as well. The beautiful weather and temperate climate on the wine tasting patio is a wonderful way to relax, and the people watching in the area never disappoints.

There is also complimentary parking at the Clay Street garage to make shopping even more convenient. We look forward to welcoming you to our location at 1400 First Street in Napa for all of your wine and fine jewelry needs! Mention this article and receive a complimentary glass of wine during your visit!
