Meet a few Bradens: Jim, Ann & Barry By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
A
nn and Jim met 47 years ago in the Greenbrook area of Danville. What started as a friendship for many years led to a relationship in the mid 2000’s after they both became widowed. “The unfortunate circumstance of losing both of our spouses caused us to meet as friends once again. This time our friendship turned into a wonderful and comfortable, loving relationship that we are fortunate to have today. We were married in 2008 and now we have five children between us and six grandchildren, a true blended family,” says Ann. Jim has three sons that he is extremely proud of. Barry, the oldest, is the owner of Fieldwork Brewing Co. based in Berkeley. He has 7 tasting rooms, one close by in San Ramon. He lives with his partner Kirsten, and they split their time between the Bay Area and their vineyard home in the Sierra Foothills. Brian, the second oldest, his wife, Shelly, and daughter, Bella, have recently moved to Nevada where they are building a new home. Brian has launched a new career with Deebee’s Organics as COO. Shelly is very artistic and creates beautiful jewelry. They lived in Blackhawk previously and were the very first family featured on the cover of Blackhawk Living Magazine six years ago. Bella is a talented vocalist and will be starting college in Utah this month. The youngest Braden is Brad. He is a PGA Golf Pro and has been extremely accomplished in teaching and marketing. He is in management with Golf Galaxy Company. Kate, his wife, is a good golfer also. They live in San Ramon with their puppy, Benny. Ann’s son, Steve Goldt, lives in Alamo and works as a senior director for Salesforce. His wife, Cristina, is a general manager for Workday, Inc. They were the first to make Ann a grandma with their oldest son, Justin, who is a 1st Lt. in the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton. His sister, Madi, is about to graduate in December from Sonoma State
University pursuing early childhood education. Ann’s daughter, Lara, and her husband, Steve Dutto, live in Orinda where Lara pursues a successful career in architecture. Steve is president of his own company, Forza Telecom, in Walnut Creek. They have two sons: Nick, their oldest, just completed his second year of college and received an internship in Washington, DC. Tyler, a senior at Miramonte High School next year, is a great basketball player, who just earned his Eagle Scout badge. Genet, a charming 14-year-oldgirl, loves sports and will start high school at Bishop O’Dowd in the fall. This completes her family. Jim was born in Birmingham, AL. He graduated with a B.A. in business from Samford University in 1960. After college, he served in the Air National Guard and was activated during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. After service, he joined The H.J.Heinz Co. in Birmingham. and eventually landed in the Bay Area in 1973, settling in Danville. He left Heinz in1981 and took a position with Superior Coffee, a division of Sara Lee Corp. He retired in 1999 after a rewarding career in the food industry. Ann was born in Cape Girardeau, MO, in the “boot heel” along the Mississippi. Early on she studied piano and music theory at Webster College in St. Louis and eventually pursued an interior design degree after raising her two children. She established her own business for 13 years with a very special friend and associate, Diane, in Danville. Ann retired in 1997. The Braden family is completed by their fur baby, Abby. “We have the cutest little miniature Labradoodle, Abby, who wraps us right around her little finger. Jim has never been without a dog and at one time had three basset hounds. He was often seen in the neighborhood walking all three of them. This is my first dog and I’m in love of course,” says Ann. In their 13 years of marriage, the couple has traveled extensively. They have visited Europe, New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan, Korea, Canada, Mexico and love making special memories in each place. They have enjoyed cruising, both on the ocean and on the rivers. Nashville holds a special place in their hearts for country music, as do the country’s National Parks and visiting friends and family. Most of all Ann and Jim say traveling makes them realize how much they love their home, “As we return from these exciting destinations and come through the gate at Blackhawk we feel that there is no better destination or any more beautiful place to call home. We feel like we live in a resort!”

AUGUST 2021
Jim is an excellent chef and spoils Ann with food shopping and cooking most nights. They love sharing wine together. “Jim always told me he didn’t want me in his kitchen except to enjoy a glass of wine while he cooks. It doesn’t get much better than that, unless, of course, when we both take the night off and enjoy the wonderful food at the Lakeside and Falls Restaurants at the Blackhawk Country Club,” says Ann. Golf has been a sport they have both enjoyed here in Blackhawk. Jim has been a golf member of Blackhawk Country Club since 1985 and was very active for many years. Ann was involved with Blackhawk Women’s Golf Association for many years as well, serving as
Captain in 2013. However, they had the most fun playing foursomes on Sunday afternoons laughing with good friends. They have also enjoyed Bocce and Monday Night Football events at the club over the years. Both Ann and Jim say they feel blessed to call Blackhawk home, “We live on Blackhawk Meadow Drive and it is such a great neighborhood. Our home was built in1985 where Jim carefully added his own favorite touches of southern charm, we always happily say it’s our forever home. We love our large yard featuring an abundance of yard art. We have wonderful neighbors and often get together for backyard parties. It is the best!”

Fire Safety
Message from Contra Costa County Fire Department C
ontra Costa County Residents Guide to WILDFIRE Preparedness & Evacuation
PREPARE YOUR HOME - How will you ready your home? HAVE A PLAN - What will you do? MAKE A KIT - What do you need? STAY INFORMED - How will you get information? KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS = How will you work together? Over the past few years, California has experienced a dramatic rise in both the number and severity of wildland fires. These fires have ravaged wildland-urban interface areas taking lives, destroying homes and obliterating infrastructure. Six of the 20 largest fires in California’s recorded history have burned in the last five years, and 10 of California’s most destructive wildfires have occurred since 2015.
The information included here is intended to provide Contra Costa County residents with an overview of the steps they can take to prepare themselves, their families and neighbors should an evacuation become necessary. Please heed the recommendations here; register your cellphones with the Contra Costa Community Warning System (CWS), prepare your home by removing excess fuel from around your structures and be ready to evacuate when wildfire threatens.
Equipment Use: • • • • •
Mow before 10 a.m., but never when it’s windy or excessively dry Mowers are designed to mow lawns, not weeds or dry grass Metal blades striking rocks can create sparks and start fires Don’t drive your vehicle onto dry grass or brush Hot exhaust pipes and mufflers can start fires
Vehicle Maintenance: • • • •
Secure chains No dragging parts Check tire pressure Properly maintain brakes
How will you ready your home for a wildfire? • • • • •
Remove all dead and dying vegetation from around the house, roof, gutters, and decks Keep tree limbs 10 feet from structures and other trees Choose fire resistant plant species Have a roof made of composition, metal, or tile Cover vents to home with a fine mesh to keep out embers
Always • Have your go kit by the door • Back your car in when parking • Battery backup for your garage door • opener, or • Know how to manually open your • garage door, or • Plan ahead for assistance opening your • garage door Make sure your smoke alarms and fire extinguisher are functional and appropriately placed. If you require assistance contact the American Red Cross at getasmokealarm.org, or visit www.cccfpd. org/education-programs.

Plan for your animals: • • • • • • • • • •
Have pet food and supplies in a go-bag Keep pets indoors if there is smoke outside Collar and confine cats in a single room so they can be easily caught in the event that an evacuation is necessary Microchip your animals Have photos of yourself with your animal to prove ownership should you become separated For larger animals, have a pre-designated place for them out of the area Be prepared to transport or shelter your animals in place Keep carriers or trailers accessible
How will you get information about an evacuation? Register for the Community Warning System Alerts from CWS come from caller ID (925) 655– 0195 In an emergency, timely information can save your life! The Contra Costa County Community Warning System (CWS), maintained by the Office of the Sheriff, is an all -hazards system, designed to ALERT the community of an EMERGENCY through multiple communication tools. To receive CWS alerts you must register your cell phone number or home phone number, home address, and email address. Your information will be kept confidential and will not be used for any other purpose other than for emergency alerts. To register for CWS visit www.cococws.us, or call 925655-0111 Today!
Know your Neighbors How will your community work together? • •
•
•
• • •
•
Create defensible space for your mutual protection: Work together on vegetation clearance in and around shared spaces Map and share information about the location of neighborhood resources such as sources of water, routes to safety and the location of hazards Identify and support neighbors who require assistance creating defensible space, registering for emergency alerts, or preparing to evacuate Communicate with neighbors who may have Access or Functional Needs (AFN) and engage them in planning efforts. Ask them What assistance do they require to safely evacuate? Include caregivers for AFN individuals in neighborhood planning efforts Meet with first responders before a disaster to clarify expectations and build relationships If you are home bound, make sure you identify a family member or friend or church or community group member to check on you during an emergency Work together to identify safety zones where you can shelter together if you are trapped or unable to evacuate
Evacuation Tips What will you do in an evacuation? Go!
• • • • • • • • •
When in danger, evacuate immediately! Don’t wait to be told Leave early! Take a neighbor with you who needs assistance Grab your go bag with important items and documents Leave inside and outside lights on for first responders Close and lock windows and doors Drive safely and cautiously out of the area with headlights on Leave gates open for first responder access / allow any remaining animals to escape on their own Avoid all downed power lines Communicate by text or call to your out-of-area contact that you are safe
If Trapped •
• • •
If you are in your car, park in an area clear of vegetation, close all windows and vents, cover yourself with a flame-resistant blanket (from your auto preparedness kit) and lie on the floor If you are on foot, look for a safe building or swimming pool along your path If you are in your home, fill tubs with water to submerge in and place wet towels under doors to keep smoke and embers out Use your home fire extinguisher for small fires (no larger than a small trash can).
Preparing for a Power Outage during Fire Season • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Register for alerts from cococws.us Update your contact information with PG&E pge.com/ wildfiresafety Take an inventory of the items you use that rely on electricity Plan for your family and pet medical needs Keep mobile phones charged Identify backup charging methods for phones and electronics Store water and non-perishable food Install home carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups Know how to use the manual release on your garage door or plan for assistance Keep gas tanks full Talk to your family and neighbors and share your plan Keep freezers and refrigerators closed Monitor freezer and refrigerator temperatures with a thermometer Use perishable food supplies first Use generators, stoves and grills outdoors away from windows Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage Check on neighbors, animals and family When in doubt, throw it out! Throw away food exposed to temperatures above 41 degrees for more than four hours Check with your pharmacist about refrigerated medications

Local Getaways
Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk By Megan Scott, Resident Since 2010
A
s the days get hotter, it’s the perfect time to escape to Santa Cruz. We went recently for the first time since pre-pandemic and were pleasantly surprised at how clean, safe and fun the boardwalk was. Most of the attractions are open, as are the food stands, arcade and games. Our favorites were the bumper cars and laser tag. After spending so many of my summers here as a kid, it’s great to relive those memories and make new ones with my son.

Make a Kite and Fly a Kite! When I read this article in the New York Times it reminded me of a time I went to Briones Regional Park with my sister and my brother-in-law and flew kites. I think I was in 4th grade. The fact that I still remember the experience, and it was such a great experience, made me want to write about making a kite.
Tony Jetland, is known as “The Kite Man”. Tony took up kite making and flying 22 years ago and hasn’t stopped since. Tony flies his kites at the Marina in Martinez, California where it is always windy. Tony’s kites are world-famous and incredible. See for yourself by watching the newsclip below. https://abc7news.com/ kites-kite-flying-man-professional/10404803/
This is the link to the article: “How to build a bird kite by Laurel Schwulst”
Enjoy August and head to the Martinez Marina to fly a kite and get a break from the heat.
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/05/19/ style/how-to-build-a-bird-kite.html
If you create items from any of my articles, please post a picture of them on Instagram at #bhlmcrafts
There’s something magical about flying a kite. I think we all wish we could fly. Creating something that can make that happen brings joy.
Thank you so much.

Business Profile
From Zimbabwe to Venture Capital CFO By Kara Navolio
F
ife Avenue Partners (FAP) has been offering clients accounting and back-office solutions for four years and has grown solely by word of mouth. They pride themselves in being the solution source that their clients deserve without the significant monetary outlay associated with hiring a full-time CFO. FAP clients comprise mostly of venture funds and a few high-net-worth individuals who have a significant angel investing portfolio. FAP’s role is to collaborate with tax and audit service providers to manage all deliverables as well as assisting clients with tax planning. As a young girl growing up in a rural village in Zimbabwe, Linda Maduwura knew she wanted to become an accountant. An uncle who lived in the big city was all the inspiration she needed. As the only accountant in the family, his kids were the only ones with bunk beds and visits from Santa Claus. In her little village Chakari, it was not uncommon for girls to get married off before they entered high school. For Linda, becoming an accountant meant making a comfortable life for herself. Linda studied part time for a college degree while working at Ernst and Young in Zimbabwe fulltime so that she could obtain her accounting degree without burdening her parents with the tuition necessary for college. Upon leaving Zimbabwe for Bermuda, Linda worked for various hedge fund administration companies before moving to San Francisco in 2006 where her husband had been offered a job. She took additional classes to enable her to sit for the CPA exam before joining BDO and later KPMG where she rose to the role of Director in KPMG’s private equity group. About four years ago she realized that she was much happier servicing smaller clients than large global ones. Her husband, Edson, encouraged her to start her own business serving micro venture capital funds and high net worth individuals who focus on startup investing. The move to start her business was made easier by an understanding she learned from years attending church with her parents. Linda explains it this way, “There is a parable in the bible that talks about bags of gold. In the story, the master gave gold to three people according to their talents, one servant received five talents, the second had received two, and the third received only one. Upon his return, all except the last one had deployed their talents to multiply the gold they had been given. The last one, who had received one talent, had kept the talent for safekeeping. The master was angry and took away the one talent and gave it to the one who had used their talents to multiply their resources. This parable rings true in my life because as I rose through the corporate ladder, I felt that I was not using all my talents. I realized I was more afraid of losing my talents than I was of starting my own business and failing. I understood then that starting my own business would create the opportunity for me to use all my talents, including the ones I didn’t have.” She
values becoming a trusted resource and loves matching people with others who share similar goals. Linda Maduwura and her husband, Edson, are raising two girls, Ndanatsa and Nandi. They are all avid golfers and travel often to Zimbabwe to work on the family farm and help feed the local community. Linda has been featured on PBS’s program for her efforts to create opportunities for others: ‘Brief but spectacular” ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChzvTAmTWjI&t=18s). Linda loves sharing her knowledge and can be reached at linda@ fifeavenueparnters.vc.

As a reminder, and just so you don’t miss a thing, please avail yourself of the beautiful 2021 BWGA calendar on our web site. Web mistress Linda Jaskolski has expertly chronicled every opportunity to join in the fun and to make scheduling your golf life a breeze!
Lisa Cook and Guest
Exciting news for members who just love to work on their golf game. You will be thrilled to know the Blackhawk driving range is getting a significant re-do scheduled for the fall season. New solar panels along with state of the art technology will help analyze your golf shots while providing real time feedback; 18-20 individual bays, targets and a fairway bunker will complete the look. This may actually change hearts and minds for those of us who live by the motto, “the driving range never killed anyone, but why take the chance.” Perhaps this technology could also provide an entertaining in-club only Comedy Chanel where we could tune in at anytime and watch each other practice… Hey BWGA, there is so much to share as we are on golf overload and doubling down on our shout outs to a game well played. Our monthly Charm Day tournament was moved up to June 17th. A salute goes out to each and every winner : Overall Low Gross – Karen Dougherty - 80 Overall Low Net – Lily Weng – 67 Flight A Low Gross – Lydia Shell - 79 Low Net – Denise Benger – 69 Flight B Low Gross – Nancy Lisiak – 92 Low Net – Anne Kuelz/Nicole Tucker – 76 Flight C Low Gross – Michelle Stalker – 96 Low Net – Nancy Levin – 77 Flight D Low Gross – Julia Leng - 108 Low Net – Mary Maag/Jo Peek/Mary O’Leary – 86 Our BWGA Classic Tournament rolled into Camp Blackhawk on June 23rd for afternoon cocktails, fun and games and a little shopping orchestrated by Camp Director Dawn Schaeffer. We jumped out of our bunks at sun-up with a 7:00am check in and a boxed breakfast to go from the chuck wagon. The campers geared up with their favorite bug spray, bear spray and hair spray and hit the links! We met back at the dining hall for lunch and cocktails provided by our own Nicole Tucker who made sure we did not go thirsty! The fun continued that very afternoon as three of the top teams from each of the four flights qualified for the Horse Race. The final outcome was: WIN: Lydia Shell/Angie Friedrich/Amy Shell/Bonnie Shewchuck PLACE: Jill Austin/Linda Stubblefeld/Sallie Cooke/Kerry Singleton SHOW: Karin King/Rae Lynn Lambert/Jan Lind/Nancy Rattie The final day of Camp gave us one more 18-hole round followed by lunch and a raffle with such great prizes! hat do you do when Danville postpones the Kiwanis 4th of July parade? Apparently, the locals throw their own parade. A throng of people flocked downtown to enjoy the Stars and Stripes and classic cars, two aspects of Americana celebrating Independence Day on Hartz Ave.
David Tom: I have lived in Danville for 30 years. I retired from the corporate tax world and now pursue a variety of projects that interest me. I have always loved cars and look forward to sharing them with you.

Well Adjusted By Dr. Tracey James, DC, Anatomy Power Wellness
Y
ou deserve to live an extraordinary life. It all begins with a healthy brain and body. As humans we live dynamic lives full of wonder, joy, possibility as well as obstacles and challenges. In a human lifetime there can be great moments of ease and also chaos. One of the greatest secrets of chiropractic is that adjustments are delivered to optimize and sustain life rather than to treat or fix. Those who are well adjusted are the most resilient and adaptable. Chiropractic Research with Heart Rate Variability shows that those who are well adjusted have greater heart rate variability and thereby greater adaptability in their lives. The chiropractic adjustments helps the body to unwind tension, unlocking cellular memory in order to integrate unresolved and stored tension. Postural stress and tension can be
re-integrated as energy for life sustaining foundations; a heart beating more efficiently, lungs breathing more proficiently or a mind thinking and processing with greater clarity. During the chiropractic adjustment as we stretch, breathe, and unwind tension our circulation increases, synaptic changes occur and the underlying energy flows. When we improve our body’s awareness, aka proprioception, this is an update for your cerebellum, vestibular system, parietal and frontal lobes of your brain. Chiropractic is sacred and reverent to Life. A well adjusted human is not one whose journey is void of challenges, it is one that is better prepared to handle, integrate and move through them. Chiropractic honors the power and purpose of the innate wisdom of the body—it is a state of being present with the body and speaking to the body
and discovering exactly what it needs. The adjustment is the removal of interferences, supporting the body in its awareness and gathering of stray energies to allow the body to reveal and heal. The adjustment is an incredible tool in supporting the way the mind body is operating, breathing, moving and expressing itself. Chiropractic can support the body in moving though a variety of stresses that may present in life such as recovering injury, increased range of motion, preparing or healing from birth, healing pain and discomfort, recovering from trauma, readying the body for a marathon, working though overwhelm, fatigue or life’s many daily stressors. Chiropractic might just be the very thing you are looking for to support your body.

Girls Weekend at Waypoint Ventura Vintage Trailer Hotel & Campground By Megan Scott, Resident Since 2010
I
have a group of girlfriends from college that I have been doing annual “girls getaways” with for the past two decades. The pandemic halted our plans for 2020, but for 2021 we were eager for our next adventure. Being that many of us are out spread between Northern and Southern California, we decided for a glamping experience at Waypoint Ventura Vintage Trailer Hotel. We rented a vintage tour bus to sleep six that had been retrofitted into a cozy camper to sleep all of us. Waypoint provides all your linens, morning coffee, nightly smores by the fire pit and bikes to cruise around the beach town with. We had a blast visiting the downtown area for dinner, relaxing on the beach and getting the camping experience in with out any of the work that usually comes with camping. If you are looking for a unique travel experience, I highly recommend Waypoint Ventura.

Wealth Management Gap By WestPac Wealth Partners
C
lients often equate wealth management with providing investment advice, but investments are just one piece of the overall pie. The other big pieces, often overlooked, includes risk management and tax planning during wealth accumulation, distribution, and transfer. These pieces amongst others are vital when it comes to achieving and preserving wealth. Spectrum Group, a leading research firm, that strategically analyzes its ongoing primary research with investors to assist financial providers and advisors in understanding the Voice of the investor found a staggering gap between the services a client expected from their wealth manager and the services actually provided. In a technological era where efficiency and optimization dominate, these concepts segue into other industries, like Financial Services. Financial advisors are under more and more pressure from both clients and regulatory bodies, such as FINRA, to have the client’s best interest in mind. The industry often uses the terms “holistic” and “comprehensive” to describe wealth management services, but many times, as seen in Spectrum’s research, advice is only centered around creating a portfolio for your investable assets. Benjamin Franklin famous quote, “nothing can be said to be
certain, except death and taxes.” Is perhaps even more pertinent in today’s world, especially with states such as CA implementing taxes upwards of 13%. For the majority of Americans, the combination of federal and state taxes will ultimately be the great hindrance of wealth accumulation. Torrey Pines 2021: 121st US Open

orrey Pines is a special place for our family. In 2008, we were the guests of the Golf Channel to the US Open Championship as a result of MJ winning the Father’s Day Essay Contest. Tiger Woods’ dramatic win in a playoff against Rocco Mediate is arguably one of his best victories. He played virtually on one leg as a result of a painful knee injury. MJ’s essay was selected from 25,000 entries. He also won merchandise including a set of custommade Taylor Made golf clubs and pro bag with his name on it. His win put us on national television on Father’s Day. It is an eternal memory in our rich memory bank. As a Hall-of-Famer golfer, MJ was invited by the USGA to attend the 2021 US Open Championship this year. Torrey Pines is a slice of heaven with 2 great courses flanking the great blue Pacific. We stayed at the nearby Hilton Torrey Pines. It is a fantastic facility with stellar service, multiple restaurants, pool, spa and balcony rooms with heavenly views of the manicured golf course and hang
gliders soaring over the majestic cliffs and ‘deep blue’ Pacific Ocean. This year was also very special as the golfers enjoyed perfect weather and challenging conditions with the golf course playing 7800 yards, lightning-fast greens and a penal rough for wayward golf shots. It was a battle to the end with Jon Rahm winning by one stroke and being crowned the 2021 US Open Champion with a score of minus 6. It was only fitting after being disqualified the week before as a result of testing positive for Covid. He also proposed to his wife on the 18th hole last year. Here is MJ’s winning essay. It had to be 200 words or less. The words are ‘inspiring’ for any golfer or any person. Enjoy! Golf Channel Winning Father’s Day Essay 2008 US Open Torrey Pines By Michael (MJ) McColgan I have been playing golf since I was 5 years old. Having been born with a walking disability, my Dad taught me to focus on my ability and not my disability. As a result, I have won 7 straight Northern California Special Olympics State Championships, 3 National Championships, and been inducted into 2 Hall of Fames—2004 San Francisco Tri Valley and 2006 Michigan having been born there. My Dad taught me that golf, like life, is a hard game but with a positive attitude, proper instruction and a will to win, anything can and will happen. In a round of golf, never never give up. He also told me to enjoy the beauty and many friends I will make in this game. He often told me that one could go out as a single player and meet three strangers on the first tee and by the end of the round be friends for life. Finally, he taught me to never get nervous on the first tee. Like life, getting off to a good start is very important. Thanks Dad!

LB Steak at City Center Brings Elegant, Modern Dining to San Ramon By Megan Scott, Resident Since 2010
L
B Steak at City Center is the perfect date night. Pro tip: Leave the kiddos home, this is not a kid-friendly spot, but this is the perfect date night or get together spot if you are looking for elegant dining. Our experience was defined by great food. There is a full bar and an exceptional wine list. LB Steak is a modern American steakhouse led by culinary icon Chef Roland Passot, a James Beard nominee and the owner of San Francisco’s world renowned La Folie restaurant that recently closed its doors after 32 years. The cocktail bar at LB Steak is an artisan, craft cocktail bar rooted in steakhouse tradition. It provides luxury imbibing meant to complement and enhance guests’ dining experience. Oakland-based architecture and interior design firm Arcsine designed LB Steak. The design concept was inspired by the textures and motifs of cattle ranchers’ apparel and ‘wear’: think bolo ties, braiding details, and leather and suede accents. The sleek décor includes dark, textured wood on the walls and ceilings, rich leather chairs throughout the main dining area and a bar that is accented with leather at the front with a back bar that showcases brass accents. It’s seriously stunning! We feel so lucky that this exceptional dining experience is so close to home. We enjoyed every bite of the delicious food and drinks. Plus, the service was outstanding. We highly recommend checking out LB Steakhouse.

Natural Eyelid Surgery Results, Not What You Think By Dr. Stephen J Ronan MD FACS
E
arlier this year I wrote an article about various surgical and nonsurgical options to improve the appearance of your face and eyes. These include face lift, brow lift and eyelid surgery. Nonsurgical options to treat wrinkles and creases include dermal fillers, neurotoxin injections, and medical-grade skin care products from ZO Skin Health and SkinCeuticals that are available at our practice. As a result of that piece, we received lots of calls from prospective patients interested in learning more about my approach to eyelid surgery. This month’s article will cover that procedure (blepharoplasty) in more depth. Eyelids are both more complicated and more simple than traditionally taught. Your eyes are a key part of the overall appearance of your face. Over time, the eyelids and brows can begin to sag and wrinkle which can give your eyes an aged look. In addition, facial volume
38
AUGUST 2021
loss over time results in deflation of the cheek and hollowing of the lower lid area. Thankfully, eyelid surgery offers a way to lift and smooth upper and lower eyelids and rejuvenate the appearance of your eyes. But there is a catch… Upper eyelid surgery is most often done simultaneously with a brow lift. In most people, the brow provides at least as much improvement as the lid. When I talk about brows, I mean the improving the lateral hooding over the eye, not lifting the entire brow (more commonly done). Lifting the lateral brow looks natural, lifting all of it does not. Once the lateral brow is out of the way, the excess upper eyelid skin and fat is removed resulting in a lighter, youthful appearance. For most people, doing the eyelids without the brow leads to descent of the brow and minimal result. When I was in training many of the lower lid articles in the journals were about limiting lower lid complications. The reason for the high complication risk (and/or lack of results) was a fundamental misconception of how facial aging takes place. The traditional thinking involves removing the laxity, removing fat and tightening things up. This is unfortunate as most surgeons still think this way today. Lower lid procedures tried to lift the upper cheek leading to complications and poor results. The actual process of facial aging involves loss of facial fat, descent of the cheek, and hollowing of the lower lid area (or upper cheek). When this undereye area or upper cheek is treated with volume replacement (fat) and sometimes elevation of the cheek, the lid becomes a simple procedure with low risk and better results. If you are bothered by the aged and wrinkled appearance of your eyelids and are interested in exploring the various options available to you, please give us a call at 925-736-5757 and/or come in for a free consultation. We look forward to hearing from you!

Summer Travel Jewelry Care By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry and the Forevermark Boutique in Broadway Plaza
A
s COVID restrictions continue to loosen, the world is beginning to re-open and everyone is booking the trips and vacations we’ve all been craving! Weekend getaways, jaunts to the beach, and full-fledged vacations are perks that pretty much come with the territory during the summer months, so it’s no wonder that summer fashion tips such as what to wear, what to pack, what to buy—are at the forefront of our minds right now. One thing, though, that’s not quite as readily on our radar is the idea of jewelry, and how the summer months might affect our pieces. Namely, how we can protect our beloved rings, jewelry, necklaces, and earrings from the season’s elements, and how we can keep them secure while jetting off somewhere sun-filled. Our jewelry can take a serious bruising when exposed to summer activities such as lounging in the sand, applying suntan lotion, and traveling. Whether your summer plans include a weekend trip or a week abroad. Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind while you enjoy the beauty of summer:
1. Sunbathe without your Gems
Sunscreen can coat gemstones, which reduces refractive and reflective light. Essentially, this means your stones won’t be as brilliant or sparkly. To avoid this, leave your fine pieces at home if you’re heading to the beach or the pool for the day, and be sure to clean them regularly all summer.
5. Before you go away, be sure your jewelry is adequately insured.
If you decide to bring an especially valuable piece on vacation—perhaps your engagement ring, a pricey watch, or a family heirloom— always be sure it is fully insured. Always obtain insurance through your homeowners or renters policy or a jewelry insurance company like Jewelers Mutual - it is safe and more affordable than you would imagine. Our team at Padis Jewelry is happy to assist you with any questions or maintenance for your pieces to ensure they stay safe and sparkly throughout the year. Feel free to reach us at concierge@padisjewelry.com if we can be of assistance in any way. Wishing you and your family lots of happy memories and vacations during these lovely summer months!
2. Organization is key when traveling.
When jumbled together, your jewelry doesn’t always get along. For example, a diamond can scratch a pearl, and a bracelet can get caught on a necklace, so always pack pieces in individual soft cloth pouches or lined jewelry boxes to prevent scratching, dulling, and the dreaded tangling of chains.
3. Keep it safe.
When selecting a hotel, be sure that safe deposit boxes are available. Never leave fine jewelry unattended in a hotel room, a rental car, or on a lounge chair—even if you’re just popping over to the bar for a Mai Tai.
4. Shopping for something new? Do your research.
Oftentimes, vacation destinations are also prime shopping destinations, so if you get the urge to commemorate your trip with a new fine jewelry purchase make sure you’re buying from a reputable jeweler that’s been in business for several years. Many stores in vacation destinations prey on unknowing tourists whose guard is down due to a few too many mojitos. When in doubt, check a retailer’s reputation and rating with the Better Business Bureau and always ask for an appraisal. The appraisal should always have the store’s letterhead and a clear signature of a member of store management. 42
