Dear Neighbors,
www.BlackhawkLivingCA.com
The holidays are a time for honoring traditions: tree lighting ceremonies, giving to those less fortunate, and pretending to love your aunt’s famous fruit cake. But it’s also a time for forging new traditions. Signing up for a charity run? Traveling to a new destination? Don’t be afraid to shake things up—the end of the year, and the beginning of a new decade is when legends are made. This month’s community calendar is filled with fun ideas on how to make this year’s holiday celebrations memorable. Our travel, food, wine and golf columnist, Mike L. McColgan, reviews his experience at Melka Estates. And this month’s featured Blackhawk cover story is Julie Moore: A True-Blue California Girl. On behalf of all of us on the Blackhawk Living Magazine team, we want to wish you and yours a very happy holiday season!

J
ulie has called Blackhawk home for more than twenty years. A true California girl, she was born in Sacramento, raised in Auburn and attended college at the University of Pacific in Stockton. She says the highlight of her college experience was her time in a sorority, “I spent three years living in the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority house, where I found friendships that have literally lasted throughout my lifetime. For several years, I worked on the Theta Advisory Board, which allowed me to keep in close touch with my Theta sisters. It was a kick to share stories with the current sorority gals about the adventures we had during our college years.” After earning her degree in Elementary School education, Julie pursued her passion for teaching but faced many challenges along the way. “I loved teaching, but had to supplement my teacher-salary with a summer bookkeeping job. What started as a way to earn a little money on the side, led me to discover my love of accounting, so, I went back to school to study accounting, earned my CPA license, and practiced in public accounting for five years,” says Julie. That led to Julie becoming controller for her family’s business, Pacific Rim Recycling (PRR). Pacific Rim Recycling (PRR) was created when Julie’s ex-husband, Steve, started working at the YMCA forty years ago. “He wanted to find a way to employ some financially-challenged teenagers who participated in the YMCA programs and decided to tap into a newly emerging business called recycling. He created a small buy back center in the YMCA parking lot. Fast forward a few years, and we started PRR in the bottom level of our Pleasant Hill condo. Our business model was built on the concept that a portion of the proceeds would go to local charities. We started with 500 wooden recycled newspaper collection boxes located in grocery store parking lots. From that point, PRR grew to handle curbside recycling collection for 5 bay area cities. Subsequently, our company spent a decade handling the recyclables generated by most of Contra Costa county,” shares Julie. Over the years the philanthropic arm of PRR started to really add up. Julie believes it’s why they were so successful, “Good communities choose to reward the philanthropic efforts made by well-meaning business’ ventures. It’s the ultimate win-win.”
Meet Julie Moore: A True-Blue California Girl By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
Julie retired from her role at PRR and began to focus her talents towards helping nonprofits, “I was blessed to be able to retire at an early age and focus my accounting skills on being Treasurer for several charity and volunteer organizations. Many happy years were spent being Treasurer of PTA groups and college alumnae groups. More recently, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time spent on the Board of Blackhawk Women, and serving as Treasurer for Blackhawk Women Scholarship Fund (BWSF). I’m so proud to say that my dear friends in the BWSF group have been responsible for awarding over $375,000 in scholarship monies to many financially-challenged, well-deserving Contra Costa women attending four-year colleges/universities,” shares Julie. From a young age, Julie was inspired by her parents to give back to those in need. “My parents did a wonderful job of instilling a philanthropic spirit into me. When I was 8-years-old, my parents chose to participate in an organization similar to Peace Corp called LAOS (Laymens Overseas Service). LAOS allowed families to do volunteer service abroad for one year. We went to Puerto Rico and lived in a small mountain village. My dad was the first licensed pharmacist the local hospital ever had, and my mom taught English to the kids in the local elementary school. My

favorite memories of Puerto Rico include running across the cement floor of our living quarters every morning to pull a ripe banana off the stalk that my dad hung in the corner of our kitchen. I loved picking off elephant ear plant leaves to use as a makeshift umbrellas while walking to school in pouring tropical rainstorms and using flattened cardboard boxes to slide down the steep grassy hillside in front of the hospital,” says Julie. A Bay Area resident since graduating college, Julie and her ex-husband, Steve, along with their daughter, Marisa, moved to Blackhawk 23 years ago. “We loved raising our daughter here and being part of this wonderful community. Some of our favorite memories include hosting fundraisers during the LPGA benefiting charities including the Wheelchair Foundation and the Blackhawk Women Scholarship Fund. What fun! To watch amazing golf right from our own backyard, followed by lots of food and drink, and then dance the evening away to a live band, those are memories I will always cherish,” says Julie.
Last year Julie was overjoyed to help host her daughter’s wedding ceremony in the gorgeous Santa Cruz mountains. She says she can’t wait to become a grandmother, “I’m really hoping to become a grandmother in the near future. My daughter and her new husband live nearby in Lafayette, so I’m prepared to be on call for any baby-sitting duties that hopefully come along.”
with upbeat music. She loves Jazzercise and her new-found sport, Pickleball. “It’s been fun meeting some new Blackhawk friends out on the Sports Complex courts. I’m looking to meet more fun BH friends at our amazing BH Fitness Center.”
Julie lights up when asked about her own parents, saying her dad is her true hero. “My mom passed away several years ago, but my dad is still going strong. He continues to live in Auburn - in the very home I was raised in. My father is 89 years-young and the man is so busy I need to schedule visits around his calendar. Between his Rotary meetings, singing in the church choir, and golfing every week...the man is living the dream. I only hope to follow in his footsteps.” Most days you can find Julie cruising the streets of Blackhawk walking her rescue dog, Jack. She is also very passionate about exercise – especially when it’s combined

Winter Holidays Throughout the World By Linda Kralik, Resident since 1984, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, Drysdale Properties
T
he Blackhawk community is rich in diversity, bringing us closer to our friends and neighbors. Here are some traditions down through the ages which reflect those diversities in culture and enlighten us to a new awareness. Some of our most treasured traditions come from pagan customs. The Christmas tree is originally, an ancient custom of the Germans. Evergreen trees were used in pagan winter solstice celebrations. However, by the 16th century, the custom was seen as a Christian tradition with sweets and fruit used to decorate the trees as gifts to the children of the town or the poor. Later, Martin Luther is said to have begun the practice of adding candles to the ends of the branches. In the 1800s, Queen Victoria brought the tradition to Britain and subsequently to the United States, where it has become one of the world’s most recognized winter traditions. Another very old and pagan holiday tradition is mistletoe. This plant, which grows by taking sustenance from other trees or bushes, can be found throughout Europe. Mistletoe bears its fruit in the wintertime. It is connected to the mythology of both Greece and Rome. The British Druids used it in their winter solstice celebrations, while the Celts believed it would bring fertility to their animals in the upcoming year. Today, mistletoe is hung high, usually in the entrance of the home where those who stop below it are kissed. We owe this tradition to the Scandinavians (Norse) who called mistletoe, the peace plant. If warriors happened to a place where it grew, they would lay down their swords, meeting in peace. Eventually, this led to lovers meeting under the trees and kissing, which continues to this day. Many year-end traditions center on light because the shortest day of the calendar year occurs during the winter months. Originally, many of the celebrations were reminders that the “light” would return, however, some have their own historic or cultural origins. The lighting of the menorah during Hanukkah has its beginning in the ancient story of the Maccabee’s victory over the Greek-Syrian army, when one day’s worth of oil burned brightly for eight days in the Temple. Today, Jewish families remember this story during the festive lighting of the menorah. The lit menorah is usually placed in a window or by the door for all to see.
Those African Americans who celebrate Kwanzaa light candles, which are placed in the kinara as part of their observance of the holiday. The kinara is a reminder of the roots African Americans have in Africa. Seven candles symbolize the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa. There are three red, three green and one black, with the latter placed between the red and green candles and lit first. The Seven Principles are Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith. Each night, the family reflects on one of the Seven Principles. While there is no formal lighting of candles, per se, Buddhists throughout the world also celebrate during the winter months. Bodhi Day is an observance of the “enlightenment” of Buddha. On this day, Buddhists remember how the Buddha sat under a pipal tree to contemplate life, pain and suffering. On the eighth day, he realized that all suffering stemmed from ignorance. Bodhi Day is considered the birthday of Buddhism. Hindus also celebrate the light in the feast of Diwali or Divali. This is a celebration of good over evil that is observed by the lighting of candles, often in small clay containers as a reminder that the Lord Rama triumphed over the evil demon king, Ravana. It is celebrated for five days, following the lunar Hindu calendar; therefore, observance can be anytime from between September to November. As Muslims approach the end of the month of Ramadan, they look forward to a three-day celebration called Eid Al-Fitr. When asked about this event, American Muslims often say: “It’s like our Christmas.” Like Christmas, Eid is a time to celebrate the faith, to be charitable, to visit friends and family, and to exchange gifts. In celebration of our traditional Christmas and culturally diverse winter holidays, I wish each and every one a joyous New Year.

Yes, You Can Roth By Joe Morgan, CFP®, CFA, Principal: JWM Wealth Management, LLC
A
Roth account can be a magical thing. It is one of the only ways to actually pay no income taxes.
How does it work? Well, it’s a retirement account where you put in funds without getting a tax deduction in exchange for locking them up. At the point of contribution, it’s basically the opposite of a 401k or Traditional IRA. When you add to your 401k, it is a “pre-tax” contribution, meaning the entire amount you contribute goes into the account and none of it is reported as income today. However, when you take it out in retirement, all of it is reported as ordinary income for tax purposes – even the capital gains that come from investing. In a Roth, you actually pay taxes today on your contribution, but do not ever pay any taxes on withdrawals – even on the withdrawals of earnings. None. Zero. While there are income limitations for Roth IRA contributions ($203,000 for married filing jointly), there are no such limits if your 401k has a Roth option.
Check with your employer to see if a Roth option exists and consider building those tax-free balances today! This is a bird’s-eye view of Roth accounts, but there are many more nuances. Don’t take anything here as advice, however if you’d like to learn more, join me over on my blog at https://jwmwealth.com/ blogs/thoughts-yes-you-can-roth and let’s start calibrating your path to clarity! What to Know About Oral-Facial Sports Injuries By Richard Anthony, DDS MS -- Blackhawk Orthodontics
O
ral-facial injuries can have significant negative functional, aesthetic, and psychological effects both on children and adults. A study on consumer products and activities associated with dental injuries to children treated in United States emergency rooms from 1990-2007 indicated that an average of 22,000 dental injuries annually occurred among children less than 18 years of age. Over half of the injuries involving primary (baby) teeth of children under the age of 7 were from accidents with household furniture. For children between the ages of 7 to 12 years, most of the oral-facial injuries occurred during outdoor activities— over half of these involved bicycles. Older children of age 13-17 primarily had oral-facial injuries during sports activities. For this group, the most prevalent injury occurrence was during baseball and basketball. The person least likely to be present when a sports injury occurs is a dentist. What should athletes, parents, trainers, coaches, and
care providers know about oral/facial sports injuries and their prevention? Fortunately, there is an excellent reference titled “The Field-Side Guide to Dental Injuries” by Drs. David J. Kenny & Michael J. Casas that provides practical guidance. Most sports-related dental injuries can be classified into three broad categories resulting from impacts to the soft tissues, the jaws, and the teeth themselves. Also, more specifically, dental injuries can be categorized into treatment needs as follows: Immediate – Within 5 minutes: A tooth completely avulsed (knocked out of socket) requires treatment immediately to have any chance of saving the tooth long term. Urgent - Within 6 hours: When a tooth is still in the mouth but has been moved, either in or out, or to one side or the other, this is considered an acute injury. Less Urgent – Within 12 hours: Injuries in which the teeth are broken or chipped but not bodily moved from their original position. Of course the first line of defense is accomplished by the consistent use of an appropriate mouth guard during recreational and sports activities that pose a risk to dental injuries. In any event, a call to your dentist, oral surgeon, pediatric dentist, or orthodontist relating the exact nature of the injury or trauma to the teeth will result in a decision regarding what needs to be done and just how urgently appropriate care is needed.

Melka Estates:
Producing World Class Wines By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990
R
ecently, my wife Linda and I had the pleasure to do a private tasting at Melka Estates. Philippe Melka is a known winemaker making wines for many Napa wineries for 20 years. He also makes the top of the line Phase Five for our friend Mike Davis who owns Davis Estates. Born in Bordeaux, one of our favorite wine regions in the world, Philippe and his wife, Cherie, founded Melka Estates in 1996. They produce 4 distinct labels reflecting their philosophy of soil driven wines. He made his debut in 1996 with 240 cases of Metisse. Melka Metisse La Mekerra Vineyard is a Bordeaux blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. La Mekerra takes its name from a river in Algeria. The fruit comes from an 8-acre vineyard in Knights Valley. Only 175 cases are produced each year. Melka Metisse Jumping Goat Vineyard is a Cabernet dominated wine that made its debut in 2003. A 3.5-acre St. Helena vineyard with its gravel soil planted to a blend of 2 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, .65 acres of Merlot and .3 acres of Petite Verdot. Not much Melka Metisse Jumping
Goat is produced. On average 440 cases are produced each year. Melka CJ made its debut in 1996. Produced from grapes planted in Soda Canyon, Coombsville and in the north of Calistoga takes its name from Melka’s children Chole and Jeremy. Production today is 1525 cases. Our knowledgeable host today was Sylvie Laly. We began our tasting with a 100% Sauvignon Blanc from Knights Valley. This was aged for 22 months in French Oak Cigar barrels. Per Philippe, “It is like no other due to the elevation of the vineyard and its soil profile.” We also tasted the 2016 CJ Cabernet Sauvignon, 2015 Mekerra 100% Merlot from Knights Valley and 2016 Metisse from Jumping Goat Vineyard. We especially liked the CJ Cabernet that was a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, and 7 % Petite Verdot that was intense, opulent and vibrant. We took a bottle back to Danville with us. The 100% Merlot was also outstanding. Philippe describes it as “a Merlot made

for Cab lovers meant for aging with many layers of complexity and richness.” One of these also went back home with us. We would highly recommend this great winery on your next visit to Napa. To make an appointment to experience these ‘world class’ wines, go to: https:// www.melkaestates.com/

Heart Matters By Dr. Tracey James, DC - Anatomy Power Wellness
‘T
is the season for deep breathing. Did you know that when you inhale, your heart rate goes up, and when you exhale, your heart rate goes down? And just like you, each of your heartbeats matter and tell a story about you and the life you’re living. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is the measurement of intervals between each heartbeat. HRV reveals your neuro-adaptability to stresses of all kinds: physical, emotional, mental, and environmental. Our bodies are always in a state of physiological, mental, and emotional change. Heart rate variability for a healthy person variates as the mind and body variates — an optimal heart rate variability, an optimal life full of potential. The truth is health can be and is that simple. A higher HRV reveals that an individual has decreased inflammatory responses, greater resiliency, greater immune response, and greater self-regulation. A low HRV is associated with elevated inflammation, diabetes, blood sugar issues without diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver, negative emotions, depression, and anxiety.
Chiropractic care builds the amplitude back in to an individual, recharging the ANS as interferences are cleared from an individual’s nervous system. We measure these changes in adaptability and health with regular frequency to support each individual in building reserves and meeting their own unique health goals. Curious to discover your heart rate variability? Join us for our Winter Wellness Exploratorium Friday December 13th 6-9pm. Complimentary HRV reading at the event with this article.
Heart rate variability is a non-invasive, quick, and reliable window into your autonomic nervous system (ANS), which reveals a great deal about an individual’s physical -and even -mental health. The ANS is the master controller for the brain-body connection and has two systems the sympathetic and parasympathetic. You may have heard of the sympathetic system referred to as “fight, flight, or freeze.” When the sympathetic engage in defending against danger, illness, or stress, HRV drops. The parasympathetic is often referred to as the “rest and digest” or “feed and breed”- the state of healing, rest, relaxation, digestion. When the parasympathetic engages the body performs better in function and heals more optimally. When the body is under persistent or chronic stress, it may prove to perform well in the short term while healing well in the long term may be compromised. Research shows certain lifestyle factors can help improve HRV. These strategies include chiropractic care, exercise, positive emotions, focused breathing (with longer exhales than inhales). At our chiropractic office, Anatomy Power Wellness, we use Insight, the only HRV system that currently live-streams Galvanic Skin Response [GSR] simultaneous to the heart rate variability reading. The live-stream GSR ensures a person is when a person is in a zero anxiety state during their HRV. The GSR’s sensitivity instantly identifies the presence of mental or emotional stressors as well as if an individual is in an arrhythmic state. Before the scan begins, three biometric standards must be met to ensure the individual is in a state of quiescence. 20

Yoga-MeditationRelaxationTechniques to align the mind and body By Dr. Asha Bajaj, Resident Since 1986
Y
oga is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice or discipline, which aims to transform body and mind
Yoga means “yoke” as in joining together of individual energy to the Absolute energy or Godhead. An early practice from India mentioned in the Vedas and Upanishads, it was introduced to the West at the Parliament of Religions in 1883 by Swami Vivekananda. Chakras are energy points or knots in the subtle body. They are located at the physical counterparts of the major plexuses of arteries, veins and nerves. Nadiis are channels in the subtle body through which the life force (prana), or vital energy moves throughout the body..
There are 7 major chakras or energy points. 1. Base or Root Chakra- last bone in spinal cord coccyx 2. Sacral Chakra- ovaries/prostate 3. Solar Plexus Chakra- navel area 4. Heart Chakra- heart area 5. Throat Chakra -throat and neck area 6. Brow or Third Eye Chakra --pineal gland or third eye 7. Crown Chakra -Top of head
Simple techniques for Meditation: Sit comfortably with the spine straight-watch your breath. Breathe in through the nose to a count of 3 and breathe out through the mouth for a count of 5. Pause, hold for 2 counts. Repeat this cycle a few times until it becomes a habit. The three main focuses of Hatha yoga (exercise, breathing, and meditation) make it beneficial to those suffering from heart disease. Yoga may reduce high blood-pressure, improve symptoms of heart failure, enhance cardiac rehabilitation, and lower cardiovascular risk factors. Research has shown that Yoga improves mood and anxiety more than some other metabolically-matched exercises, such as walking. For chronic low back pain, specialist Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs has been found 30% more beneficial than usual care alone. In a Boston study the pain for yoga participants decreased by one third, while the standard treatment group had only a five percent drop in back pain. Yoga participants also had a drop of 80% in the use of pain medication. Just as we try to eat right, sleep well, it’s important to manage the mind. Practice these simple techniques to align your mind and body so you can fully enjoy the true joy of the holiday season.
To align the physical body with the mind one needs to practice Meditation . Meditation is a practice in which an individual trains the mind to alter consciousness, All religions have a spiritual practice that emphasizes meditation. It might be called Spiritual awareness, Mindfulness in Buddhism, Islamic –Dhikr Sufism style meditation, or Prayer beads-rosary in Christianity. Each have come to value this powerful practice of calming and controlling the monkey mind. A regular practice increases wellbeing, patience, compassion and helps control anger reaction, reduces production of cortisol, the stress hormone, thereby strengthening your immune system.
Dr. Asha Bajaj, PT/DPT has 30+years experience in a variety of settings including the management and operation of an outpatient private practice in Walnut Creek. Asha has served in Bhutan, India, Vietnam and Malawi, Africa with Health Volunteers Overseas to train and develop their Physical therapy program. Community Safety
Happy Holidays and Stay Safe This New Year By Aaron “Wally” Barger, Resident since 2012
F
rom the fourteen Neighborhood Watch Block Captains and nearly 300 homes in our community, we want to wish you a safe and wonderful New Year! We started the Neighborhood Watch Program in the Blackhawk HOA community in early 2018. Our objective has been to work closely with our local police department and to learn as much as possible about home-security and personal safety. Our Neighborhood Watch program offers safety information through neighborhood meetings with local police officers, crime prevention safety officers, fire/earthquake emergency preparedness personnel, and other first responders. Neighborhood Watch is an excellent means by which information can be shared through meetings, workshops, literature, and other direct forms of communication. Beginning in 2020, we will launch a “Be 1 of 6 on Your Street” program. We have learned that the best way to reach people in our neighborhood is to start by explaining how a few simple safety/ security tips can protect your home and family. Policeman, firemen, and other first responders believe that community
involvement is highly successful. This is especially true if a number of homeowners are involved in a network that shares information, holds an annual block party, and assists one another by watching out for each other’s homes. Your assistance in this effort is absolutely essential. The Blackhawk Neighborhood Watch Block Captains are asking you to contact the neighbors on either side of you and share phone numbers, email addresses, and any other useful information. The next step is to invite the homeowners across the street to do the same. This puts more eyes on each other and your homes, especially when one of you is away. By extending your network beyond your six properties you are broadening the formal networking system. Expanding the network is a necessary approach to mitigating a potential urgent situation on your block. Neighborhood Watch Block Captains are available to assist you in learning more about home and personal security. If you have any questions, please call me at 925-708-9349 or email me at aaron. barger@yahoo.com. You can, also, contact the County’s Crime Prevention Unit, ask for Le’Reina Skidmore at 925-313-2512 for additional information or to schedule an orientation meeting.

The village of La Quinta includes PGA West, a semi-private golf club. Known as the Western Home of Golf, PGA West hosts a PGA Tour event each February on the Nicklaus Tournament and Stadium courses. Five Public Access courses La Quinta Resort and PGA West offer a rich set of golfing package options as they have the same owner. Blackstone Group, a private equity firm, purchased the properties from the sovereign fund of Singapore in 2018. Five public golf courses are available for guests of the PGA West club. Three PGA West courses - Norman, Nicklaus Tournament and Stadium course and two LaQuinta Resort courses, the Mountain Course and the Dunes Course. Members of PGA West have access to four private courses. The Citrus course near the resort and the Weiskopf, Nicklaus Private and Palmer courses at PGA West bring the total course collection to nine. courses. Sharing the same clubhouse, a cold concrete entrance belies the upcoming experience. Inside, cavernous ceilings frame portraits of past winners of the PGA Tournament held each year since 1960. Originally the Bob Hope Desert Classic, the sponsors have changed but the excitement and quality of the field has not. We “play where the pros play”.
Beautiful Santa Rosa Mountain Backdrops
One of our favorite dining views is the patio at Ernie’s Bar & Grill at the clubhouse. Gorgeous views of both the ninth and eighteenth holes of Nicklaus Tournament course are breathtaking on a warm spring day. Both greens wrap around a large water feature with “PGA West” spelled out as a colorful flowerbed across the pond. Both holes are 431-yard par 4’s with water guarding the narrow greens. It’s a great spot to watch golfers struggle.
26
DECEMBER 2019
Like most of Nicklaus’ courses, beauty and drama percolate throughout the course including two island greens - a rare feature. Fairways are charitably wide surrounded by mounds up to five feet. Rough is almost nonexistent - it’s slightly browned out and deeper Bermuda grass. One of thousands of towering palm trees is more likely to be the impediment. The challenge is the approach shot. Greens are generously large, but hard and fast; shots often roll off them. Elevated greens bring an added challenge when grassy depressions up to twelve feet cause recovery shots to be blind. Water and front-side bunkers that sometimes negate the bump and run shot forcing exact lofted shots. Most holes are elegantly framed by mountains, palm trees and water.Accentuated by color, lush fairways and greens contrast with browned rough and deep blue water. The hole at the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament course that stands out for many is number 8, a 143-yard par 3. The eighth plays over water framed by the towering Santa Rosa Mountains in the background. A wooden retaining wall fronts the green. Well-appointed townhomes and villas surround the green. Large bunkers guard it in the back. Then there’s number 15, a 516-yard par 5. A lake on the left runs much of the second half of the hole narrowing the fairway for the big hitters. Then the fairway narrows. Most players thread a lay-up to the right for a short iron approach to an island green protected by a large front bunker.

Cranberry Fruit Sauce By Parisa Z. Ambwani, Resident since 1983
Enjoy this delicious side dish treat with your family or in the company of friends at holiday festivities. Serves 10 • • • • • • • • •
½ teaspoon arrowroot (see note) ¼ cup fresh water, to be mixed with above arrowroot 3 cups fresh cranberries (about 12 oz.) ¾ cup orange juice, freshly squeezed ¾ cup raw sugar 1 dash sea salt 1 red apple, cored, diced ¼ cup golden raisins, cleaned In a small mixing bowl, dissolve arrowroot with water; set aside.
In a medium size uncovered saucepan bring cranberries and orange juice to simmer and simmer until all cranberries pop (about 8-10 minutes). With back of a wooden spoon crush cranberry.
Stir in sugar and salt and add arrowroot mixture. Bring to a simmer and simmer while continuing to stir for a few minutes or until the mixture is thickened, shiny and cranberries base sauce is formed (check the sauce for consistency and taste; add a little water or sugar if needed). Remove from heat. Stir apples and raisins into cranberries sauce and allow it to cool in covered saucepan. Place sauce in blender and blend for 30 seconds. Refrigerate for 24 hours prior to use. This is a good sauce for Thanksgiving meals. Note: Arrowroot, is more easily digested than wheat flour and contains no gluten. When they realize they have the ability, with my guidance, to tackle their own financial challenges, they grow as people and as community members. It’s an honor to be chosen to help make that happen. I love to watch them grow!” says Joe.

Illuminating Jewish History:
The Menorah By Clarissa Woods
The Menorah is one of the quintessential images of Hanukkah. An ornate, seven-lamp candelabrum (often gold), it is one of the most revered symbols of Judaism. It’s even the emblem of the state of Israel, evident by its display on the coat of arms. The Menorah hearkens back to the original candelabrum lit by Moses in the portable Temple when in the wilderness. It represents the seven days of creation, with the central lamp being the Sabbath. It’s also said to represent the seven classical planets: Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus and the Moon. In the Torah (Exodus 25:31-40), we learn that the original Menorah was handmade out of pure, solid gold. The central lamp is also an allusion to God’s light spreading inwardly from the surrounding six lamps that represent human knowledge. For many, the Menorah also symbolizes an individual’s spiritual life being illuminated by the seven spirits of God. Meanwhile, the nine-branch Menorah is called a hanukkiah as it is specifically used in the celebration of Hanukah. The hanukkiah is a reference to Judas Maccabeus’ rededication of the Temple. Miraculously, one day’s worth of oil lasted eight days, as explained in the Talmud. The ninth candle (or Shamash) a more modern development than the eight-lamp Menorahs of the past, is used to light the other candles. Today, the Hanukkah Menorah is made from a range of nonflammable materials. The lamps are often set at the same height with the exception of the Shamash which is either elevated in the center or placed off to the side. The lighting of the hanukkiah is the central ritual of Hanukkah. One candle is lit on each night of Hanukkah until the room is aglow with light from the hanukkiah on the eighth evening.

In the company of the Devil! By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015

ount Diablo...Monte del Diablo...Thicket of the Devil...whether in Spanish or English... it is a true jewel in the middle of suburbia. A mountain that completely overpowers the East Bay, is an exclusive place for hiking, biking, camping, picnicking that offers stunning vista stops with massive views of the far reaching mountains. The summit at Mount Diablo, at 3,849 ft., is the best reason to visit this park. The views are epic from up here. During prime visibility, one can see up to 200 miles. Don’t forget though that part of the whole Mount Diablo experience is the gorgeous winding drive up the top to the summit. But the drive might get to be a little challenging for the first-time drivers. My other favorite stop is Rock City. It’s a fun and adventurous place for the whole family. One can climb these unique rocks that have small wind caves forming in them. Due to the varied terrain and wide range of elevation of Mount Diablo, it’s cold wet winters, and long dry spring, summer and fall seasons, one can spot an interesting mix of wild flowers and animals here. 2013 burned 3,111 acres. It has been called the perfect fire since there was no major damage to property or life, but it brought an extraordinary once-in-a-lifetime shift. Plants bloomed here that hadn’t been seen here for years. On the other hand, believe it or not, it does snow here in most winters. In Feb 2019, the peak got a good dusting of snow. The locals flocked in huge numbers to check out the snow while I enjoyed view of the snow-covered peaks from my very own backyard. All in all, it’s an amazingly beautiful place to escape to for a day or the whole weekend. And it’s extra special for me since it’s a stone’s throw away from my place in Blackhawk, plus I get to click those spectacular sunrises and sunsets from the top all year around. Thankful for this devil in my life!

is the season to sparkle—and spread joy, and as the holidays approach, we take a moment to appreciate the people in our lives who make it all happen. There is something extra-special about the women in our lives who make home, “home.” My wife Judy is my rock; an amazing partner, spouse, friend, and mother to our four kids. I am so grateful to her for all she does for our family. In addition to working exceptionally hard during the holiday season alongside our team in the jewelry stores, she also does nearly all of our Christmas shopping and cooks a feast for our Christmas celebration at our home in Blackhawk for the entire family of nearly 50 people. She is remarkable in so many ways, and I feel so blessed to call her my wife.
you’ll also find a beautiful array of fine jewelry and timepieces from many other luxury brands such as Tacori, Roberto Coin, Verragio, TAG Heuer, Michael M and Breitling, to name a few. Our team at Padis is here and ready to help with all of your holiday shopping needs both in our stores and on our website at padisjewelry.com.
