The holidays are a time for honoring traditions: tree lighting ceremonies, giving to those less fortunate, and pretending to love your aunt’s famous fruit cake. But it’s also a time for forging new traditions. With this unprecedented year of 2020, don’t be afraid to shake things up—the end of the year, and the beginning of a new decade is when legends are made. This month’s community calendar is filled with fun ideas on how to make this year’s holiday celebrations memorable. Our travel, food, wine and golf columnist, Mike L. McColgan, reviews his experience at Atelier Crenn. And this month’s featured Blackhawk cover story is The Tippins Family, whose love story is right out of a CSI show. On behalf of all of us on the Blackhawk Living Magazine team, we want to wish you and yours a very happy holiday season! Here’s to a generous season! Warmly,

When the couple met, Rick was living in San Ramon where Mahsa eventually joined him. “When I was pregnant with Max in 2011, we were looking to move to Danville or Alamo. We ended up looking at a house in Hidden Oaks and absolutely fell in love with the peaceful and family-oriented nature of the community. We were hooked and we just love it here. There are so many kids the same age as ours. We couldn’t be happier with our decision to move to Hidden Oaks,” says Mahsa.

Meet the Tippins: A Lifetime of Laughter

T

By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010

he Tippins’ love story sounds right out of an episode of CSI: San Mateo County. Mahsa was working in the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, and Rick was the investigating officer in a drug case she was handling. Mahsa says Rick has been making her laugh from their first interaction. “I emailed Rick a list of questions so we could go over them before the preliminary hearing, and he emailed me back with nonsense responses that made me laugh…a lot. At that moment, I grew very fond of his personality. He makes me laugh more than anyone in this world…all the time. If any kids are reading this, let me impart some wisdom: marry someone who makes you laugh. When you’re quarantined together during a pandemic, it’s a lot more fun!” Rick adds that the attraction to Mahsa came on strong. “The first time I saw her at the DA’s office, there was an immediate attraction. I watched the way she handled herself and was impressed. We were assigned to a case together and the rest, as they say, is history.” An engagement followed in 2008 and they were married at Mountain Winery in May 2009 with a traditional Persian ceremony. “I have to admit, our wedding is still the best party

I’ve ever been to,” adds Mahsa. “I love being married to Rick, truly. My parents raised me to be self-sufficient so I wouldn’t have to rely on anyone to thrive in life, but Rick adds to my life in ways I could never achieve on my own.” Mahsa came to California by way of Texas. Her parents immigrated to the United States from Iran during the revolution. While her mom finished getting her MBA in Texas, her dad moved to the Bay Area to start their new life in California. When her mom finished her MBA, Mahsa, her mom and sister joined her dad in the Bay Area. She primarily grew up in Foster City. Rick was born in Ventura, CA and moved to Northern California shortly thereafter. The first 12 years of his life were spent in a fairly rural area of the upper Napa Valley. He rode horses, had chickens and goats, and pretty much lived in the woods that surrounded his home. When he was 12, his family moved to Napa proper where he attended a religious school through 10th grade and Napa High School his junior and senior year where he played football. After high school, he joined the Marine Corps in 1986.

8

A lover of the pursuit of justice, Mahsa received her B.A. in Legal Studies from UC Berkeley and earned her J.D. from Golden Gate University School of Law. She is a Partner at DeHay and Elliston, LLP in Walnut Creek and defends corporate clients in all stages of litigation, including at trial in different parts of the country. She also serves as National Coordinating Counsel for two corporate clients. “Litigation can be challenging and contentious, so having fun and learning to find ways to laugh with your teammates is essential to maintaining good mental health,” Mahsa admits. Since 2016, Mahsa has been recognized in San Francisco Magazine’s section for The Top Women Attorneys in Northern California. She has also been a speaker at conferences on a variety of litigation-related topics and a guest lecturer at Golden Gate University School of Law. “I am a big proponent of being fair and acting right—those two tenets would save a lot of people, communities and countries heartache and destruction. I always tell my kids, ‘Be smart. Be strong. Be a good person. The rest will always fall into place.’ I follow those words when it comes to my personal and professional life. One day, I would love to be a judge,” says Mahsa. Rick is the strategic protector of the family. He served in the United States Marine Corps before starting a career in criminal justice. “I was assigned to the 3rd Battalion 1st Marines where I was deployed on a Westpac as an antitank gunner. When I returned to the States, I transferred to the Surveillance Target Acquisition Platoon. I deployed one more time before my separation from active duty. After the Marine Corps, I returned to Napa where I put myself through the basic police academy and went to work for the East Palo Alto Police Department, when it was the murder capital of the United States. Then I moved to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office where I worked in a Street Crimes Suppression Team, SWAT, Narcotics, and Homicide. I also received my Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Management and ultimately retired as a Lieutenant.” DECEMBER 2020

Three children round out the Tippins family. The oldest, Jake, is a 29-year-old police officer for San Ramon Police Department. Next in line is Max, who is 9 years old and a 4th grader at St. Isidore School. And the youngest, Layla, is 7 years old and in 2nd grade at St. Isidore. “Jake Lives in San Ramon with his beautiful wife, Samantha, who works at Genentech, and their joyful baby, Luke. Max is an outdoor kid through and through—riding his bike, swimming, and exploring as much as he can. He also loves putting together engineering kits and routinely updates his Amazon wish list to add more—you know, just in case anyone wants to buy him a kit. Layla becomes lovelier every day if you ask me. She loves to write sweet notes and leave them around the house. She’s a very loving and caring little girl with a wicked sense of humor when she is comfortable around people,” says Mahsa. Rick, Mahsa, Jake, Samantha, Max, Layla, and Luke

After retiring in 2018, Rick set out to pursue his goal of being a published author. “The only way I could empower my kids to pursue their dreams, was to pursue mine. I taught myself to write screen plays while working the graveyard shift at a correctional facility. I never pursued the sale of any of my screenplays and ultimately decided to write a novel. After self-publishing my first book, A World Slowed: The Jared Chronicles, I was signed by a publisher out of San Diego to complete the four-part series. The first two books are out now; the third will be released by early December,” says Rick. “I was ready to retire from law enforcement, but I am not retiring from life. The energy and determination I put into my family and my books has made my life even better,” Rick adds.

The family is completed by two mutt rescue dogs, Tasha and Lucky. Tasha is around 9 years old and is the sweetest dog who has perfected the art of relaxing. Lucky is a year old and was rescued from the Animal Rescue Foundation. “One day, we went to the Danville Farmers’ Market for actual food and saw the ARF truck there. The kids and I decided to take a look. Poor Rick, he totally lost control of the situation and we left with a new puppy,” Mahsa says laughingly. The Tippins have lived in Hidden Oaks since 2011 and say they are grateful every day for the community, “We have found a wonderful sense of togetherness in our community. We look out for one another and enjoy conversations together. We enjoy being active in our local community and at the kids’ school. We also firmly believe our kids are our true legacy in this world. The more we invest in their mental, spiritual, and academic wellbeing, the more we are doing our part in adding good human beings to this world.”

Blackhawk Food Drive By Jayne Tizzano Chairwoman, Blackhawk Food Drive

Benefitting the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano

December 8th, 9th, and 10th VIRTUAL FOOD DRIVE

T

his year is very different from any other. Our communities’ needs have increased dramatically in terms of both the number of people going to the Food Bank for help and how much food is needed. Both of these metrics are up 40% -50% from last year. There are now 270,000 people each month being fed by the Food Bank vs. 178,000 last year. In past years the Blackhawk Food Drive was a community effort that included several volunteers delivering bags to your door and collecting donations at all of our gates. Our very generous residents made our drive such a success. However, it was a high contact event. This year because of COVID-19, the Food Drive will be a virtual one. In other words, there will be no bag at your doorstep or donation bins set up at the gates. The Food Bank will be set up a donation page unique to Blackhawk on its website. Remember, the Food Bank can buy two meals. The Virtual Food Drive www.foodbankccs.org/Blackhawk page will open on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, at 6: 00 AM and close Thursday, December 10, 2020, at 5:00 PM. If you prefer to donate by check, the address is Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano 4010 Nelson Avenue, Concord, Ca. 94510. Please indicate “Blackhawk Food Drive” on the envelope and in the memo section of your check so the donation can be properly accounted for. Thank you, Blackhawk! Crafts Corner

Christmas Crafting By Michelle Barry, Resident since 2018

T

he best part about the holidays is spending it with family, and crafting together is a great way to make it fun and memorable. I have great memories of past Christmases. Specifically, one when I was seven years old. My father was working in Lake Tahoe. It was my first Christmas spent in the snow. My father cut down our Christmas tree, a ten footer, and my four sisters and I decorated it with homemade ornaments. Our dog, Lulu, had just given birth to nine puppies,

and we were able to bring them with us. We had a wonderful time. Remembering that Christmas, I found a great article on creating eco-friendly holiday crafts that I thought I would share with you this month. Here’s the link: https:// w w w.gathered.how/ar ts-craf ts/ eco-friendly-christmas-crafts/ There are 41 different ideas; I tried four of them and they were super simple. I think kids, really anyone, would find them fun to make and the results very satisfying.

A snowflake ornament made from toilet paper rolls.

Have a wonderful holiday season! Again, if you make anything from my articles, please post them on Instagram at #BHLMCrafts, I’d A Tree Made With Twigs collected from Blackhawk Meadow Drive. love to see them.

Life through a Lens

Travel Reflections 2020! By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015

H

ungry for travel? With the year almost over, I am reflecting on how differently the past several months turned out compared to what I had hoped for. Before COVID-19 hit, I had planned to spend the summer with my kids in India. Travel is one of the things that I enjoy most with my family. With everything getting shutdown, the calendar really opened up compared to a typical year, but I am very grateful for the limited travel we still got to enjoy. Here are my my favorite bits and treasured photos I photographed during my 2020 road trips...

Exploring Point Reyes

Our perfect Oregon trip... This COVID summer we road-tripped to Oregon. We were totally in awe of its natural wonders like its beautiful coast, volcanic mountains, lava trails, waterfalls, and deserts. Crater Lake, was definitely a jaw-dropping experience for us and the most picturesque sights for me. The deepest lake in America is so pure and blue; and is in the belly of a giant erupted volcano Mount Mazama. Another highlight of our trip was the epic landscape, The Painted Hills, one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon and part of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

The perfect day at Point Reyes... Located on California’s stunning coastal Highway 1, Point Reyes National Seashore has more than 70,000 acres of preserved land and seashore with amazing hiking trails (5 mile Laguna trail and Coast trail) and breathtaking seascapes like Sculptured Beach, a secret remote hidden beach with dramatic steep bluffs, colorful sea stacks and gorgeous coastal scenery. The few lucky ones here can spot hermit crabs, sea anemones, starfish, and elephant seals. We ran into a huge flock of crows and seagulls cawing and croaking.

Exploring Big Sur... Big Sur located on the scenic Highway 1, was a very special weekend trip we made in early October since we were celebrating our daughter’s seventeenth birthday. We were totally blown away by the 90-mile stretch of the unmatched natural grandeur of the stunning Pacific coastline with dramatic cliff side views. We clicked a lot of selfies with the famous arch shaped Bixby Bridge, the most photographed bridge in California due to its aesthetic design and picturesque setting.

The Gift of a HydraFacial By Stephen J. Ronan MD FACS

My kids enjoying that special moment at the Crater Lake

Stunning views from Bixby Bridge

Final thoughts from back home in Blackhawk... It’s amazing that we saw all this and so much more from behind the wheel of our car. We can’t fly to fancy destinations right now, but if you are itching to hit the road, go out and explore. Don’t take things in your backyard for granted! Do your part and stay safe. Hoping for a better, safer and more traveling in 2021! As an aspiring photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity!

I

f you are looking for ways to pamper yourself or a loved one this holiday season, consider giving the gift of a HydraFacial. This soothing and non-invasive hydra dermabrasion facial is one of our most popular treatments at our award-winning practice and medspa. A HydraFacial uses a patented device to deliver exfoliation, cleansing, extraction, and hydration to the face. The effects of the sun, pollution, and stress can damage your skin cells, prohibiting the growth of collagen and elastin, the essential components of healthy, glowing, younger looking skin. HydraFacial treatments work by exfoliating damaged cells, hydrating tissues, and cleansing with antioxidants, while peptides and hyaluronic acid revitalize and protect your skin and promote collagen and elastin production. Just as with traditional facials, your HydraFacial treatment will be personalized based on your skin, so it is going to be different for a teenager with acne than for an older client with sun damage and wrinkles. Before your first HydraFacial, one of our expert aestheticians will evaluate the overall condition of your skin, determine your skin’s sensitivity and choose the serum and individualized treatment plan that’s right for you. HydraFacials are soothing, relaxing, and deliver instant results. The very first treatment is immediately effective, with visibly refined skin and a uniform complexion. Hydration results will last several days, and treatments are recommended once per month. Our Beauty Membership plan is a great way to stay on top of your regular beauty regimen and save money in the process. Membership includes a practical monthly subscription plan for easy payments and special club member pricing. In addition to HydraFacials, it is also a great way to develop a personalized treatment plan for RHA and Restylane dermal fillers, Dysport injections, and other beauty treatments. As a thank you to our local community and a way to bring some personal relief and joy to the holiday season, we are offering a three HydraFacials for the price of two special from now until the end of December. We will also give a complimentary HydraFacial gift certificate to anyone who signs up for a Beauty Membership plan. There’s no better time to give the gift of a HydraFacial. Give us a call at 925-736-5757 to sign up or learn more. And Happy Holidays from all of us at Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa!

Sycamore Grove Park in Livermore Rocks! By Austin Scott, Second Grader at Tassajara Hills Elementary

M

y family and I love exploring local bike trails and one of our favorites is Sycamore Grove Park in Livermore.

It’s six miles round trip on a very beautiful path away from any cars, (so my mom and dad don’t have to worry if I ride ahead). My favorite part is there are dirt paths that go off the main concrete path for me and my dad to explore on our mountain bikes. My mom prefers to stay on the concrete path because she doesn’t have a mountain bike. Here’s some pictures of our last ride. And if you like wine tasting, like my mom and dad, there are lots of wineries in the area to have a picnic after your ride. It’s the perfect day!

Magnesium Magnitude By Dr. Tracey James, DC, Anatomy Power Wellness

M

agnesium is the mineral involved in over 700 metabolic reactions and a determinant for optimal performance of each and every cell in bone, muscle and organ. Every cell in your body requires it to function. Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body, and yet a 2012 study showed that 50% of individuals in the US and Europe are getting less than the recommended daily amounts. Magnesium is essential for life, required to convert your food into energy, create new proteins from amino acids, create and repair DNA and RNA, facilitate muscle movement, maintaining blood glucose homeostasis, activates vitamin D, regulate the messages that move throughout your brain and so much more. Because, our beating hearts, immune function, healthy bones and nerve conduction rely on magnesium then we must know the red flags that may signal deficiency: •

• •

Muscle cramps and twitches believed to be caused by a greater flow of calcium into nerve cells, which overexcites or hyper stimulates the muscle nerves Mental disorders such as apathy (mental numbness) and an increase risk of depression Osteoporosis as 60% of magnesium is found in the bones Fatigue and muscle weakness from

a loss of potassium in the muscle, a condition associated with magnesium deficiency • High Blood Pressure as low magnesium in the body increases blood pressure which increases risk of heart disease • Irregular heartbeat from an imbalance of potassium levels inside and outside of heart muscles, a condition associated with magnesium deficiency While it is important to know the signs of a possible magnesium deficiency, it is equally as important to consult your primary care provider before supplementing magnesium as not all magnesium supplements are created equal. In fact there are many different types of magnesium and it’s important to seek out what will best support your health. Here’s the scoop on magnesium supplements: • Magnesium L-threonate: supports brain health • Magnesium Taurate: supports blood pressure and maintaining healthy blood sugar levels • Magnesium Malate: supports body’s energy production, metabolism and nervous system function • Magnesium Orotate: supports heart and blood vessels • Magnesium Oxide: low absorption,

laxative effect Magnesium Glycinate also known as Chelate: easily absorbable, gentle on digestion promotes sleep and calm Magnesium Citrate: used to treat heartburn and raise low magnesium levels

Magnesium is widely found in both plants and animal-sourced foods with the richest source coming from nuts and seeds. In just 3.5 ounces of almonds you can get a whooping 270mg of magnesium into your diet. And for you chocolate lovers, dark chocolate has 176mg of magnesium in the same 3.5 ounces. Other great food sources include flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, cocoa, coffee, cashew nuts, hazelnuts, oats, whole grains, beans, and leafy green vegetables.

The Arnold Palmer Classic Course sits up against the beautiful Santa Rosa Mountains. The $45 greens fee is attractive for residents for a superb golf course that rivals other upscale courses in the desert. Greens fee for non-La Quinta residents is $80-120 is during the peak season. A SilverRock Resort master plan includes a luxury hotel, residencies and village. Montage International and The Robert Green Company have signed an agreement to collaborate. Three hundred and forty hotel rooms under the Montage and Pendry brands are planned along with sixty-six Pendry Residences and a Montage Spa, a major recreation center, multiple food and beverage facilities, a mixed-use village, all integrated alongside the Arnold Palmer course. Impeccably conditioned holes wind through large sandy areas interspersed with desert shrubbery – all with expansive views of the beautiful Santa Rosa Mountains. A former course in the rotation of the PGA Tour’s Bob Hope Classic the course sports large native bunkers and impressive water features. The SilverRock Resort Arnold Palmer Classic Course is

impeccably manicured, with ample water, large bunkering and undulating greens. The fairways are generous, but it still helps to know your best target lines off the tees. As long as you keep it in the fairway the lies are perfect. But there is an abundance of waste areas with loose sand and gravel interspersed with large bushes. These areas are punishing if you don’t know how to play from them and it’s just as likely you’ll end up in or near a well-placed bush. The greens are large, undulating, fast. Subtle undulations are common but locking putting lines is not tricky and they roll true. Solid stone engraved tee markers are embedded in sand providing a desert flair. GPS on the carts is the best we’ve seen. Service is excellent. Greens fees are on the low-end for this top-quality golf experience.

Apple Grape Jelly Dessert By Parisa Z. Ambwani, Resident since 1983

Serves 6-8 • 3 tablespoons agar-agar (seaweed gel flakes), please see the note 1 • 3 cups orange juice, freshly squeezed • ¼ cup raw sugar • 1 teaspoon lemon zest • 1 dash sea salt • 1 cup red grapes, seedless, cut in half • 3 red apples, cored and diced Garnish: 1 tablespoon pistachio nuts, slivered OR few basil leaves with culinary rose In a small heavy-bottomed saucepan, mix agar-agar with orange juice. Bring contents to high simmer. Simmer for 5 minutes

while you are stirring. Turn off the heat. Add sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest and salt. In a medium-size bowl, combine grapes and apples and mix with the agar-orange juice-mixture. Transfer apple-grape mixture into a Pyrex serving dish, level the top and let cool completely. Cover the Pyrex with heavy aluminum foil and refrigerate for 12 hours until fruit-jelly becomes firm. Garnish with pistachio prior to serving. Variation: instead of orange juice you may use fresh pomegranate juice and instead of pistachio you may use pomegranate seeds for garnish. Note 1: Agar-agar, (seaweed gel): The flakes are extracted from a type of seaweed and have a natural jelling substance that has the benefit of being free of animal products, and so is used by people who do not want to consume animal derived gelatin. The flakes dissolve in hot liquids and form a gel as they cool; it is often used for its thickening properties in desserts, pudding, sauces, and baked good fillings. You can find agar-agar at health food stores. Note 2: This fruit dessert can be made in small individual sized molds instead of one large one. Atelier Crenn:

3 Star Michelin Experience in San Francisco By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990

I

n Cow Hollow, San Francisco, Atelier Crenn is a restaurant in the city that had our curiosity peaked. Based on the concept of Poetic Culinaria, we looked forward to experiencing what the World’s “Best” Female Chef served. The meal began with a Happy Birthday card personally signed by chef Dominique Crenn. She also came to our table and introduced herself before our dinner. She is a worldly person who grows her fresh produce from her 4-acre farm located in Sonoma. Our attentive server Antoine then presented us with a ‘poem’ that described each of the entrees that read: “Summer has come with its cool breeze By the shimmer of black pearls, tumbling in the ashen cloud See-the efflorescing beauty with rosy cheeks rises And summer star’s glow, though hidden in the summer gray As delicate creatures of green and blue surface to bloom For the verdant bounty of the gatherer’s harvest in caring hands Gleaming through the canopy, an orb so felicitous and splendid Summer has come and is full of sweet surprises Sweetness, bounty, thanks.” The tasting menu was served outside the restaurant on the terrace that included a Kir Breton, white sturgeon caviar tart with gold essence, miyagi oyster with smoked crème fraiche, tomatoes served on top of a tomato sorbet with nori, trout mousse with bread soaked in squid ink and brioche with house-cultured butter. All the dishes were perfectly balanced and paired beautifully with the wines. Service was beyond outstanding. Dominique Crenn moved to San Francisco in 1988 and loved the city. She made her name at Luce in the Intercontinental Hotel, where she earned her first Michelin star. In 2012 she became the first female chef in the US to achieve 2 stars. In 2016 she was voted as “The World’s Best Female Chef” and in 2018 Atelier Crenn earned the three Michelin stars. In conclusion, we would highly recommend this restaurant for a very special occasion. It is no wonder that Dominique has a 3-star Michelin rating.
