Feedback/Ideas/Submissions:
This month we are celebrating a certain romantic holiday in Blackhawk Living and introducing you to your neighbors, the Jelvehs. Their love story is rooted in the Bay Area, and we are lucky they chose Blackhawk to call home. If you’re looking forward to planning trips again, our travel, food, wine, and golf columnist, Mike L. McColgan, reviews a luxury resort only an hour’s flight away. Personally, award-show spectating is what I look forward to most in February, along with celebrating Valentine’s Day. With COVID-19 leaving these times uncertain, and our normal February traditions on hold, we hope our community stays safe, healthy and finds ways to create new traditions to celebrate love. Happy Valentine’s Day from Blackhawk Living Magazine! We are devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share please email me at mscott@bestversionmedia.com.

Meet the Jelveh Family: Music, Laughter and Glam! By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
resided in San Francisco where I went to school, then moved to Hillsborough during my senior high school year. At the age of 23, when I moved out from my folks’ home, Josette and I had just started dating and we decided to get our first place together. We rented a beautiful apartment in Belmont where we eventually got engaged, and then some 5 years later we bought our first home in Castro Valley and got married the same year, in 1996. Five years later we turned our Castro Valley property into a rental and moved to Blackhawk in 2005.” Both Josette and Peruz attended the College of San Mateo. Peruz acquired a degree in Real Estate/ Finance, and Josette pursued a Major in Design as well as Cosmetology. Entrepreneurial spirits at heart, they’re proud that they’ve both created thriving businesses in their respective fields. Peruz is a Mortgage Broker, in California as well as other states. “I enjoy being able to assist my clientele in achieving optimum financial gains by constantly setting the stage for profitable real estate sales and acquisitions and enhancing their net worth by increasing their asset positions in their portfolios. It is my insatiable desire to bring continuous tangible benefits to their transactions each and every time we get into contract. That is the primary reason that I have been thriving in this industry on a ‘by referral only’ basis for 20 years now,” Peruz shares.

eet the Jelveh family: Peruz and Josie Jelveh and their two beautiful children Michael, 20, and Farrah, 18.
Both raised and rooted in San Francisco, it’s only fitting that Peruz and Josette Jelveh met at the famous S.F. nightclub, the Oasis. Peruz says Josette took his breath away, “From the moment I saw her, I knew she was the one in every sense of the word. She is all the things that make a woman truly beautiful inside and out.” One of their first dates was a 4th of July gathering in San Francisco. Peruz says fireworks accidentally ignited a fire in the hills above them and Josette proved bravery that night. “The fire began to spread. In fear, everyone around us dispersed and ran away except for Josette and me. She immediately ran towards the fire without reserve, practically beating me to the punch; and when we realized we were the only ones on the same mission to extinguish the fire, she became my heroine on the spot.” The couple were married in 1996, and three years later their first child, Michael, was born. Two years after that, a daughter, Farrah, completed the family! Both Josette and Peruz grew up in the city by the bay. Josette is a third generation San Franciscan of Italian and Spanish descent, and Peruz is a French National born and raised in Paris, of Persian descent and has lived on four different continents. Peruz says, “My family moved around the globe every two to four years as my father was a high-ranking diplomat for the Royal Courts of the Shah of Iran, and moving was part of life in Diplomatic Corps. I was nearly 12 years old when we landed in the United States for a 4-year U.S. diplomatic assignment. My father was appointed to the Iranian Embassy in San Francisco on behalf of the Iranian Government. But this final assignment became an ill-fated one, as the 1979 Islamic Revolution occurred in Iran and the rest was history. Needless to say, my family and I have since called the US our permanent home, one which we love dearly and are proud citizens of! We initially
Josette has worked at top San Francisco hair salons, where she is known for designing redcarpet hair and makeup looks for clients attending opening night at the opera and symphony, as well as for weddings and editorial assignments. She was a Beauty Editor for the California publication, GEV Magazine and currently works at Paradiso, a Salon by JD, in downtown Danville. “On behalf of the owner, I have designed a salon that transports clients into a sensory experience with an emphasis on wellness. I have a passion for assisting clients in achieving their perfect look for their lifestyle,” says Josette. Over the years through hard work, a lot of creative thinking, and a love for helping others, both Josette and Peruz say they have built a long list of loyal clients and referrals. “We thoroughly support each other and delight in treating our clients like family, which of course includes our wonderful Blackhawk family!” The couple decided to move to the East Bay in their late twenties. “We bought a lovely home in the Greenridge neighborhood, which was built by the infamous architect Joseph Eichler in the hills of Castro Valley. After the birth of our children, Josette and I began searching for a positive and safe community in which to raise them. We were thrilled when in 2005, we found and bought our

dream home within the extraordinary Blackhawk Country Club,” says Peruz. Two (grown) children complete the Jelveh family. A twenty-year-old son named Michael and an eighteenyear-old daughter named Farrah. “We are immensely proud of both our children. Michael loves sports, and baseball was a way of life for him growing up. He played ball for the Tassajara Valley Little League, made All Stars and went on to play through his senior year at Monte Vista High School, as well as various private travel ball clubs. He also has a passion for cooking and music, and has written his own lyrics and produced several tracks on which he is the Artist and Rapper. He has recently taken up golfing and is an avid golfer. Michael attended the University of Nevada at Reno and continues to pursue a degree in Business. Farrah has been in dance, choir and gymnastics and participates in volunteer work for Pledge for Humanity where she served as treasurer. A 2020 graduate from Monte Vista High School, she and her classmates are being called to step into the future with more purpose, vision, and hope and to rise above these unprecedented circumstances. She is currently attending the University of Oregon to study her major in Psychology,” says Josette. When Peruz and Josette are not dedicating time to their clients, you can find them in the outdoors. “We have a love for the outdoors, working out and staying healthy.
As a family, we love to spend time together playing sports, music, laughing, and cooking,” says Peruz. The family would like to wish the community a blessed 2021. “The Corona Virus outbreak has been a test of our systems, values and humanity. We have learned to value our health, freedom and our community more than ever. Focusing on things we can control by taking measures to strengthen our immunity, maintaining a healthy state of mind through remaining active and assisting others in the community during difficult times. We love humanity and want the best for all. We should all be reminded to be kind to one another, conscientious and supportive of each other. Our hearts go out to all who have been affected by the events that have taken place in 2020. We will get through this together and wish everyone a blessed 2021.”

ARF Adoption Stars Submitted by ARF Photos by Julie Cheshire Photography
Pinecone:
Looking for a furry friend during this trying time? Good news — ARF is now offering a no-contact virtual adoption process! If you see an animal you’re interested in on our website, just fill out an online inquiry form. Once your inquiry has been received, you will be added to our virtual adoption queue.
Four-year-old Snickers is a kindhearted gentleman with a tender, loving soul. Snickers is eager to romp, play and lean into his closest human friends for some petting and scratches. He would make a fabulous sports companion and enjoys learning as much as he enjoys exploring. He will need a home that is eager to train and be active but makes time for naptime snuggles. Snickers must be the only dog in his new home. We recommend he does not go into a home that has cats or small animals. Snickers’s adoption fee has been prepaid by a generous donor.
Meet your forever friend at Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, 2890 Mitchell Drive, Walnut Creek, during adoption hours: Noon to 6 pm Wednesday & Thursday, Noon to 7 pm Friday, and Noon to 6 pm Saturday & Sunday. Would you like to be part of the heroic team that saves the lives of rescued dogs and cats? Can you share your talents to connect people and animals? ARF volunteers are making a difference! For more information see our website, www.arflife.org, or call (925) 256-1ARF.
The adoption fee for puppies (<6 months) is $350, for adult dogs is $250, and senior dogs (7+ years) and special needs dogs are 50% off the adoption fee.

One-year-old Pinecone is a sweet gal with a magnetic personality. This girl is a social butterfly who’s always happy to introduce herself to new people. She’s also a cuddlebug with her close human friends. Pinecone would love to be a part of a home that can provide her with lots of attention and playtime. Pinecone tested positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and should be kept indoors to protect her immune system. FIV is specific to cats, and does not spread through casual contact such as shared water bowls, litter boxes, snuggling, or playing with other cats. Pinecone’s adoption fee has been prepaid by a generous donor. The adoption fee for kittens (<6 months) is $150, for adult cats is $100, $25 off each for multiple cats/kittens, and senior cats (7+ years) and special needs cats are 50% off the adoption fee.

Beauty Membership By Stephen J. Ronan, MD FACS
A
t Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa, we understand that keeping up your beauty goals can be difficult to manage, and that is why we offer personalized Beauty Membership plans. There are many benefits to a Beauty Membership plan, including discounted medspa pricing, easy monthly payment options, and preferred scheduling times.
Maintaining your beauty goals is similar to keeping up a gym membership. Aesthetics requires consistency to achieve and maintain your best beauty results just like it takes a healthy and active lifestyle to maintain your ideal body weight, shape and size. Our Beauty Membership plan is a simple, easy and affordable way to establish and maintain a regular appointment regimen for many of our skin care and cosmetic treatments including HydraFacials, dermal fillers, Dysport injections, laser treatments and other nonsurgical procedures. For a HydraFacial, we use a patented device to deliver exfoliation, cleansing, extraction, and hydration to the face. The effects of the sun, pollution, and stress can damage your skin cells, prohibiting the growth of collagen and elastin, the essential components of healthy, glowing, younger looking skin. HydraFacial treatments work by exfoliating damaged cells, hydrating tissues, and cleansing with antioxidants, while peptides and hyaluronic acid revitalize and protect your skin and promote collagen and elastin production. HydraFacials are soothing, relaxing, and deliver instant results. Dermal fillers are a popular non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment that are administered via injection to reduce lines, creases and areas that appear “sunken-in.” The unifying theme of dermal fillers is that they “fill in” areas that have lost volume to create a smoother, more youthful, or more enhanced and defined appearance. In addition to filling in areas of volume loss where depressions and creases may be forming, dermal fillers can also be used to augment or enhance lips, cheekbones, or the chin. Dysport is simple protein that is injected into a muscle creating weakness. Muscle action is what causes the wrinkles of frown lines, forehead furrow and crow’s feet (smile lines). Look in the mirror and make these expressions to see the muscles at work. By precisely and temporarily weakening these muscles, we can soften the expression and reduce or eliminate wrinkles. If you are interested in learning more about our Beauty Membership plans or how HydraFacial, dermal fillers, Dysport and other injectables can help improve your appearance, please call our office at 925.736.5757. We look forward to hearing from you!

Sense of Health By Dr. Tracey James, DC, Anatomy Power Wellness
T
he collective focus of the last year has been on safeguarding our physical health. True health of our bodies encompasses all aspects of our being. We are not compartmentalizations of each piece of our selves and our health. Our mental health, physical health and emotional health are not separate independent categories but rather interwoven, interdependent and create the greater composite of our whole health. We express the quality of our health directly through our nervous system by experiencing life through our eight senses. We have five external senses and three internal senses. We experience the outside world through our vision, taste, touch, smell and sound. We experience our internal world through our vestibular system, proprioception and interoception. We live our lives through our nervous system and the quality of our health is a direct connection to the tone of our nervous system. The tone of our nervous system is dependent on how well the brain and body can communicate. And the brain and body communication is vitally dependent on the integrity of their connection. Chiropractic is the only profession whose primary focus is to support the integrity of that connection. Interoception is our eighth sense; it’s our inner gage of connecting in a feeling, sensing what our body’s communicating. Thirst, hunger, itch, a heart pounding or slowing, the need for more air; these are all examples of interoception experienced. The right anterior insula is the location in the brain where interoceptive activity occurs. The anterior-cingulate system integrates interoceptive information with emotion bringing forth the subjective sensory experiences of how we are feeling. We are wired to experience life through all of our senses. Chiropractic Helps You Optimize The Integrity of Your Brain Body Connection to Experience Your Best Life.

WHAT IS YOUR
WORKING GENIUS?
By Patrick Lencioni, founder and president, The Table Group
When it comes to work, we all have gifts. Natural, God-given talents that give us energy and allow us to contribute to the success of organizations and teams. We are meant to use those gifts, and it is frustrating, sometimes tragic, when we can’t. Of course, if we don’t know what our gifts are, we can’t be sure that we are using them. Now, in addition to our gifts, we all have limitations—natural areas of deficiency that drain us of our energy and frustrate our ability to contribute to work. Though we can’t always avoid those areas, we are meant to minimize the time we have to spend on those tasks, though again, if we don’t know what those deficiencies are, we can’t minimize them. The Six Types of Working Genius is a model and an assessment tool that allows anyone—CEOs, schoolteachers, factory supervisors, college students—to identify their gifts and limitations so they can maximize their satisfaction and success in any kind of work they do. In thirty minutes, someone can radically alter their day-to-day job fulfillment or even their career direction. What a difference that can make in a person’s life. As it turns out, those six types of genius—Wonder, Invention, Discernment, Galvanizing, Enablement and Tenacity—make up the six required activities for any work endeavor.
Whether you’re engaged in running a company, a department, a project, or even a family, all six are necessary ingredients for success. No one person can possibly embody them all, which is why teamwork is so important. Among those six types, everyone has two that we call areas of genius, where we get our joy and energy and have natural ability. We have two that we call areas of frustration, where we get drained of joy and energy and have little natural ability. Then there are two in the middle, areas where we might have some ability, but that are not a source of energy and satisfaction. Imagine if every company, every organization, every team knew the areas of genius, competency and frustration of their people and organized them for success. Imagine if every parent knew those areas of genius for their spouse and children. It’s not an exaggeration to say that there would be more joy and less misery in society. But that has to happen one person at a time and that person might as well be you. What are your areas of genius?
The Genius of Wonder (W)
The natural gift of pondering the possibility of greater potential and opportunity in a given situation.
The Genius of Invention (I)
The natural gift of creating original and novel ideas and solutions.
The Genius of Discernment (D)
The natural gift of intuitively and instinctively evaluating ideas and situations.
The Genius of Galvanizing (G)
The natural gift of rallying, inspiring and organizing others to take action.
The Genius of Enablement (E)
The natural gift of providing encouragement and assistance for an idea or project.
The Genius of Tenacity (T)
The natural gift of pushing projects or tasks to completion to achieve results.
Patrick Lencioni was named in Fortune magazine as one of the “ten new gurus you should know.” His passion for organizations and teams is reflected in his writing, speaking and executive consulting. He is the author of eleven best-selling books.

The Resort At Pelican Hill:
“Refined, Relaxed 5 Star Luxury On The Deep Blue Sea” Foot Cave By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990
M
y wife Linda and I recently traveled to the 5 star luxury resort at Pelican Hill in Southern California.
From our home in Danville, it is a easy 1 hour flight to Orange County Airport, and a 15 minute drive to a 504 acre slice of heaven on the deep blue pacific that offers “something for everyone.” From the moment you drive into this Italian Renaissance inspired 504-acre luxury resort with 750 mature olive trees, all your cares and concerns quickly disappear as you are greeted by a happy staff of people with a “ What can I do for you “ attitude dedicated to making your stay a memorable experience. The architecture was inspired by the renowned Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. Many of the resort furnishings are antiques imported from Spain, Italy and France. A self guided tour book is provided to guests describing Palladio’s influence throughout the property as well as excellent descriptions of the art and tapestries located in the lobby, hallway and great room social lounge. Our favorites were the Flemish tapestries that were from Brussels located on the walls beside the fireplace in the great room social lounge. These tapestries date back to the 17th century and depict flower filled vases lined by cupids on each side. The colors are vivid and provide the beautiful room with a tranquil effect as guests gather and linger at the heart of the resort. We checked into our elegantly appointed bungalow guest room complete with fireplace, balcony and ocean views ranging from 847 square feet to 2100 square feet. If you require more room for a family affair or other event, the resort offers villas that are much larger and up to 3500 square feet of luxury. These accommodations may be reserved by the evening, weekly or monthly. The 23,000 square foot Spa has been Awarded the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating consistently each year since opening. It offers a wide array of services to soothe your senses from the rigors of modern life and where every moment is one of extraordinary pampering and rejuvenation. After a spa treatment, relaxing by the unique “Coliseum Style” pool forming a 136-foot diameter circle with over 1 million hand cut mosaic tiles and stunning ocean views is a great way to wind down before dining at one of the resort’s 3 restaurants or 2 cafes. For the more adventurous, guests can enjoy the Crystal Cove Experience. You can explore 3.5 miles of ocean front strolling the beach, swimming, jogging or cycling along the trails at Crystal Cove State Park on one of the last oceanfront preserves left in Southern California. Executive Chef Jean Pierre Dubray brings his French Culinary training and passion for perfection to the resort’s restaurants. There is a dining experience for every mood a guest may have. Our experience included Andrea Ristorante, the Pelican Grill at the Golf Club and the Coliseum Pool & Grill. Andrea Ristorante offers Northern Italian cuisine with an extensive wine list and fresh pasta 16
homemade daily in a temperature controlled pasta room. Pasta Chef Julia also offers weekly classes in traditional pasta making. We especially enjoyed the risotto prepared in a unique manner. A large 90 pound wheel of parmesan cheese that is imported from Italy is wheeled to your tableside. The chef shaves the inside of the cheese wheel and then puts the hot Italian Risotto into the middle. The melted cheese and risotto then are expertly mixed together resulting in a burst of incredible flavor for the diners. We loved this experience and highly recommend it. The Pelican Grill also offers an extensive wine menu and outstanding coastal California cuisine prepared in an open kitchen. Views from the ocean view terrace make for a “very special “ culinary experience. There is also a popular lounge with two huge 9’ x 6’ HD TVs for viewing sports events after your golf game or for a more casual get together. There are also 2 World Class Golf Courses designed by legendary architect Tom Fazio that offer panoramic views from each of the 36 holes. A modern and high tech Golf Academy led by Glenn Deck and a team of knowledgeable PGA professionals is also available to help improve your game. We played the Ocean North that was a par 70 and offers tees for all levels of golfers. Linda found the ladies tees to be very friendly and fair. The ocean views on every hole made you not care about hitting a bad shot or missing a putt. The sad part about enjoying this great Tuscan like refuge is...... having to leave. The service staff prides themselves in making you want to extend your stay or to come back soon. We definitely plan on returning soon and highly recommend that you put The Resort at Pelican Hill on your bucket list to experience this pinnacle of excellence. A
local mixologist and tequila aficionado, Fernando Aguayo opened Choza Tacos y Cantina in Portland, Oregon in October 2018. Finding the restaurant Carne Asada Tac o successful, he returned to his home town and opened his second location in the beautiful Blackhawk Plaza with the best patio this side of Las Vegas. Nestled in right next to the water makes it a beautiful setting to enjoy a meal. Opened during Covid with outdoor dining only and no budget for advertising, the restaurant quickly became well known for it’s outstanding and authentic Mexican food and equally outstanding margarita selection. The food is prepped daily with the freshest and local ingredients. Instead of making their mix using lime juice and agave, Fernando’s mix is made from scratch using blood oranges, oranges, lemons, limes and a few other secret ingredients. All of this gives the mix not only a unique color but flavor as well. Choza also does not carry mainstream tequilas, all are small batch, 100% agave and of the best quality. Bear’s Best Las Vegas –
A Cornucopia of Nicklaus’ Best Holes By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012
Mega Homes Green/Brown Winter Overseed
B
ear’s Best Las Vegas is a collection of sensational holes selected by Jack Nicklaus from among his 390 courses throughout the world. Holes chosen from among Nicklaus’ most impressive designs include PGA West in Palm Springs, Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, Castle Pines in Colorado, La Paloma in Tucson, Palmilla in Cabo San Lucas and others. By borrowing from the past to create a new course, Bear’s Best is a fascinating golf experience. Located in an upscale neighborhood in the community of Summerlin, Bear’s Best is a high-end daily fee course and a must-play for serious golfers.
At each tee, I reflected on whether I have ever played the modeled hole from Nicklaus? This made every hole uniquely satisfying.
Ranked #12 in Nevada, according to Golf Magazine.
Course Info – Bear’s Best Las Vegas golf club is a high-end daily fee golf course. Location – Thirteen miles due west of the Las Vegas airport at the base of the Red Rock Canyon National Recreational Area. Lodging – Plentiful hotels on the Strip, downtown or anywhere west of Las Vegas. Rates: From $89 to $259
Many homes, including spectacularly impressive designs, surround each hole. On multiple holes, the Las Vegas Strip shines in the distance. The practice range grass area is relatively small. Hence, our warm up was on the mats. We enjoyed the firm and fast greens. Opening with a strong Par4, Hole #1 incorporates water down the entire left side. Modeled after Hole #6 at PGA West Nicklaus Private course, you need to bring a good tee shot to start the round. Modeled after Hole #1 at the Palmilla Mountain course in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, a giant waste bunker runs along the entire left side of Hole #6 eventually crossing the fairway immediately in front of the green. Ample green-side and fairway bunkers challenge many shots, but the sand was often shallow and hard. They perch some impressive homes on the course, especially on the back nine. Each hole marker shows the hole number and course modeled from Nicklaus’ private and public designs. Modeled after Hole #5 at the private Desert Mountain Chiricahua course in Scottsdale, see a distant view of the Las Vegas Strip from the teeing ground on the Par3 Hole #15. Modeled after Hole #18 of the Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West in Palm Springs, Bear’s Best closes with an extended Par4 with a vast waste bunker along the entire right side bordering a water hazard.
Bear’s Best Las Vegas is a fun Nicklaus course and a delight to play. Find High resolution photos at: destinations/bears-best-las-vegas

Protecting the Client from the Client By Katrin M. Cusack, Law Offices of Katrin M. Cusack
A
ttorneys in California swear an oath when they become members of the California Bar Association; that oath includes a promise to faithfully discharge the duties of the profession to the best of the attorney’s knowledge and ability. One of the most sacrosanct cornerstones of the legal profession is an attorney’s duty of loyalty to the client – in other words, promotion and protection of the client’s best interests, even when those interests conflict with those of the attorney. But what happens when the client is the client’s own worst enemy? I encounter this problem from time to time in particularly contentious divorces, or especially bitter custody disputes. I often hear a client who is highly emotionally damaged or enraged ask me to undertake a course of action that, ultimately, is not likely to lead to a positive outcome for a client but will be pricey. That means money in my bank account, but not such a good outcome for my client.
While I am more than happy to accept payment from a client, I am reticent to accept fees from one who is instructing me to take a course of action akin to chasing a wild goose, herding feral cats, or running a fool’s errand. On more than one occasion have I told a client, “I hear what you’re saying and I get that you’re hurt/angry/ticked off, but I’m not sure what you’re asking me to do is the best use of your money.” Sometimes, there is a less emotionally charged action that will yield better results, which is a better use of a client’s money towards attorneys’ fees. I have yet to talk a client down off the emotional ledge and still be told to chase that goose, herd those cats, or run that fool’s errand. While having a good lawyer to help you argue your case is all good and well, the really critical thing is knowing you have an attorney on your side who is going to look out for you on every issue, even when it means protecting you from yourself.

Well, you can get there pretty quick once you know that your spending fully supports your Financial Plan just as much as your portfolio does. Spending is a critical factor in your finances – no one denies that – but it can be difficult to analyze. Right now, you might think I’m talking about cutting your spending, but I’m not. Not at all. I’m simply saying that your spending today must work well with your spending over the rest of your life. And the only way to know that is to build a true Financial Plan. Wouldn’t it be great to know we can splurge on certain items today and still do everything we want in life?
It’s only when we know that the trajectory of our Financial Lives gets us where we want to be that we can truly spend with great joy! For more details, check out a deeper analysis at www.BestFinLife.com/blog, but in this space I want to simply make the point that this can be very important. For a limited time, I am offering a completely FREE financial conversation on the topic of your choice. FREE, that is, from cost and also FREE from any sales pitch. Simply schedule your call here: www.calendly.com/bestfinlife/free-financial-conversation. Adding Personal Touches to Your Home By Sheeja Nair, Interior designer, Raashi Design, LLC
Your home should tell the story of you, from your interests and hobbies to trinkets from travels and family heirlooms. Adding in pieces that have meaning in your life will make your home feel more authentic and less like a manufactured, generic room straight from a magazine. This is the place that you spend a majority of your time, especially in today’s climate, and it should be a reflection of your family. Show off your talents, travels, and hobbies! Painting clay tiles for a fireplace surround or designing your own mural is a great way to show your own creativity. Floral arrangements from your home garden add an extra layer of ambience to a room and shows your green thumb! A framed photograph from a trip or an art piece purchased from an overseas artisan can remind you of the places you have been. Decorating with books adds color, dimension and texture to a room while acting as a conversation starter when you are entertaining.
Your home is a perfect opportunity to pay homage to your family’s history. Antique table settings or a Persian rug that has been passed down for generations add character to your home. Perhaps you have an aunt that was an artist, and you can dedicate a wall to showcasing her pieces. Display a gallery wall of photos of family members from your children all the way back to your great grandparents to remind you of family members, past and present.

Charity Spotlight
Harmony & Healing By David Victor, Founder Harmony and Healing
T
he year 2020 brought much heartache, and even threatened to stop our charity in its tracks with COVID-19 pandemic preventing our musicians from visiting hospitals and patients in person after our last visit on Valentine’s Day. But persevere we did, and now we are offering extremely uplifting “Virtual Visits” to patients and their loved ones and friends, no matter where in the world they may be. The COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic has halted our ability to do in-person visits at hospitals (I guess that’s somewhat obvious!) It’s too bad, because the hospital workers and hospital patients could surely use it! However, we are responding to the Coronavirus pandemic with our “Virtual Visits”: Harmony & Healing is available via Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, Apple Facetime, Microsoft Meet, Join. me or any number of video chat applications.
Schedule a Virtual Visit If you’d like to schedule a Harmony & Healing Virtual Visit for a hospital patient in need of some harmonious therapy and smiles, please reach out to us via the Contact page, and we will schedule a time. Please also let us know if you have any special musical requests, and we’ll do our best to accommodate. A donation to support our charity, while we certainly appreciate it, is not required for most virtual visits. Take that, COVID-19! There’s no stopping the Harmony or the Healing! Crafts Corner
Valentine's Day Crafting By Michelle Barry, Resident since 2018
I
love going to a candy store (especially Danville Chocolates) in February. I love all the pops of pink and red I see decorating the shelves along with the hearts, teddy bears and warm sentiments. I often see something new and creative that inspires me to create something of my own. This year I decided to create my own “heart shaped” candy box. You can purchase a heart shaped box from Joann’s, Michael’s, Target, and probably many other stores and decorate them. You can also make one from scratch! I think kids would love this project. Here’s the link for the instructions: easy-diy-heart-shaped-candy-boxes/

Another item I decided to make for Valentine’s Day is Spicy Red Pepper Jelly. My husband loves it. I use this simple recipe from Epicurious. com. https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/ spicy-red-pepper-jelly-236699 My friends and family LOVE to receive a jar as a gift. It is super tasty with goat cheese or cream cheese on a cracker. I make homemade labels using Avery labels and print them from my color printer.
Have a delightful and yummy February!

Benicia State Park Rocks! By Austin Scott, 2nd Grader, Tassajara Hills Elementary
L
ooking for a great place to get out and ride bikes with your family? We love riding at the Benicia State Park Recreation Area. It’s a fun drive across a cool bridge. When you get there, you will find a beautiful trail (with no cars) that goes all along the bay. At the end of the bike path, there is a pretty picnic area where we stop for snacks and watch the big ships come in. This is a kid-friendly bike path that I think is great for all ages! I hope you like it.

Life through a Lens
Happy Valentine’s Day! By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015
My bit this month...
A short poem I wrote which draws inspiration from all the love stories that start and end by swiping left and right, through hashtags, insta-flirting in comments or liking each other’s posts! There is no time like InstaTimes to meet “The One” online! InstaLove I gave you my heart wrapped in moonlight Decorated it with bows of shining stars Sealed it with my love, joys and hope Thought that was enough I tagged us together in a lifetime of promises Redecorated my love with heart and moon emojis Unfollow me And leave me drowned in my insta good dreams But don’t tarnish my sacred moon and shining stars
As an aspiring photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity!

Annual Wild Mushroom Warning By Jen Vanya, East Bay Regional Park District
E
ach year, mushrooms come out after the first rains of the season, which began on November 26. Mushrooms are ecologically important and can look beautiful – but some of them contain dangerous toxins. The death cap (Amanita phalloides) and Western destroying angel (Amanita ocreata) are two of the world’s most toxic mushrooms, and both can be found in East Bay Regional Parks during the rainy season. The death cap and Western destroying angel mushrooms contain amatoxins, a group of molecules that inhibit cellular metabolism in many animals. In mammals, the liver and kidneys are typically the first organs affected after ingestion. Symptoms don’t usually appear until up to 12 hours after consumption, beginning as severe gastrointestinal distress and progressing to the liver and renal failure if treatment is not sought immediately.
The death cap and Western destroying angel can also be dangerous for pets. “Dog owners should keep a close watch on their dogs during the winter months,” said Mason. “Pet owners should contact a veterinarian immediately if they suspect their pet may have eaten a toxic mushroom.” While the death cap and western destroying angel mushrooms are responsible for most cases of mushroom poisonings in California, deadly toxins can also be found in Galerina and Lepiota mushroom species, both of which are found in the Bay Area.
“Both of these toxic mushrooms can be lethal to humans and pets if consumed,” said East Bay Regional Park District Naturalist Trent Pearce, who is based in Tilden Regional Park and documents the fungi in East Bay Regional Parks. “They are mostly associated with oak trees and can be found growing anywhere oak roots are present.” The death cap is a medium-to-large mushroom that typically has a greenish-gray cap, white gills, a white ring around the stem, and a large white sac at the base of the stem. Though the death cap is mainly associated with oak trees, it has been found growing with other hardwoods. It was accidentally introduced to North America on the roots of European cork oaks and is now slowly colonizing the West Coast. The death cap is not native to California. The Western destroying angel is a medium-to-large mushroom that usually has a creamy white cap, white gills, a white ring around the stem that disappears with age, and a thin white sac at the base. It fruits from late winter into spring. It is associated exclusively with oaks. Unlike the death cap, it is a native California mushroom. “The Park District urges the public to be safe and knowledgeable about toxic mushrooms when encountering them in the parks,” said East Bay Regional Park District Public Information Supervisor Dave Mason. “Collecting mushrooms in East Bay Regional Parks is not allowed.”

Sweet Potato Vegetable Pie By Parisa Z. Ambwani, Resident since 1983
Serves 6 Preheat oven to 350-degree F. Grease generously a 12 ½ -inch wide by 2 ½ -inch deep frying pan/skillet

• •
1 large, sweet potato, partially oven cooked, grated (about 2 cups) 1 large onion (grate onion, squeeze out the juice and discard) ½ cup parsley, cleaned, chopped
2 tablespoons mint, dried 2 tablespoons basil, dried 2 teaspoons ginger root, peeled, grated 1 teaspoon tapioca flour* OR ½ teaspoon cornstarch ¼ teaspoon sea salt OR to taste 1 dash black pepper, freshly ground 5-6 eggs, slightly beaten ½ cup olive oil
In a mixing bowl, except olive oil, combine and mix all ingredients (sweet potato, onion, parsley, mint, basil, ginger, tapioca flour, salt, pepper, and eggs.) Add oil into frying pan and heat until hot (please see note.) Pour the mixture into frying pan. Level the mixture and cover with lid and reduce the heat to medium. Cook for 4-5 minutes over medium heat, then uncover the top and continue cooking until the edge is slightly brown. Cut pie in
4 sections and flip over and cook the other side for 2-3 minutes or until done. *Tapioca flour is derived from Cassava Root, and like cornstarch is used as a chief ingredient for thickening in puddings, pie fillings, custards, and soups. Tapioca flour like cornstarch thickens as it cools. As a cornstarch substitute use 2 tablespoons tapioca for 1 tablespoon cornstarch. Note: oil must be hot enough (but not to smoke) to set outside of vegetable pie mixture at once. Holistic Journey: Occurring in the world happen at the speed of universe time. An Engaging Idea: A Knack for the Stack: The Big Trend We Are Seeing for 2021 By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry and The Forevermark Boutique at Broadway Plaza
As your love grows and marriage is on the horizon, engagement rings are imagined, designed, or discovered. Though the sea of rings is infinite, one will inevitably stand out above all the others and become “the one.” Here is what we are seeing as the biggest trend for engagement rings in 2021. Stacking fashion rings aren’t new, but in the bridal space it’s a trend that is really gaining momentum. A beautiful engagement ring begins the journey of a stacked look. When searching for an engagement ring, consider a classic solitaire in a shape you desire. Alternatively, a sparkling halo with a gorgeous pavé band is eye-catching as well as timeless. Or slip back to times past with intricate filigree, beadwork, or engravings on the band that will stand out like designs by Tacori and Verragio. Should you decide that the stacked look is right for you as well, take care that the diamond is set in such a way that other bands that sit beneath it create a combination that is both attractive and comfortable. Women are happy to not just wear their engagement and wedding ring anymore but to add on with curved diamond bands and other interesting stackable rings allowing them to really express themselves and showcase their unique personal style. These “additions” not only look trendy and modern but make great gifts to celebrate important occasions such as birthdays and anniversary gifts.
When selecting your accompanying bands, consider whether the style will work with other rings over time. You will want to add pieces that mark commemorative occasions, such as anniversaries, birthdays, the birth of your children, or just periodic celebrations of your love. Whatever you choose, your rings should be a reflection of your love and spark memories of the moments shared throughout your life. Join us at one of the five Padis Jewelry locations (our three San Francisco stores, our Forevermark Boutique at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek, or our new downtown Napa location) to view fine designers such as Tacori, Verragio, A Jaffe, Gabriel & Co and Forevermark and find the ring that speaks to you. Our stores are always a comfortable noncommissioned shopping environment. Whatever you select, your rings should be always reflection of your love and spark memories of the moments shared throughout your life. And don’t forget, we offer complimentary cleanings at all of our locations. Be sure to stop by one at your convenience - you’d be surprised at what it can do! Our team at Padis Jewelry is happy to assist you in any way. Don’t hesitate to visit us at the store, schedule a virtual consultation, give us a call or shoot us an email! Concierge@padisjewelry.com
