Dear Neighbors,
This month we are celebrating a certain romantic holiday in Blackhawk Living and introducing you to your neighbors, the Hayward family. They are rooted in the Bay Area, and we are lucky they chose Blackhawk to call home.
If you’re looking forward to planning trips again, our travel, food, wine, and golf columnist, Mike L. McColgan, reviews a luxury golf and food destination only a short drive away.
Personally, award-show spectating is what I look forward to most in February, along with celebrating Valentine’s Day. With COVID-19 leaving these times uncertain, and our normal February traditions on hold, we hope our community stays safe, healthy and finds ways to create new traditions to celebrate love.
Happy Valentine’s Day from Blackhawk Living Magazine!
We are devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share please email me at mscott@bestversionmedia.com.

Meet the Haywards: Rooted in the Community
By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010 | Photos courtesy of Hayward Family
Matt and Sharon Hayward met at the Saddle Rack in San Jose during Thanksgiving week, 1994. Sharon was taking western dance lessons at the country western bar and after a Friday lesson, she decided to hang out with some friends. Matt was just out of the Marine Corps and also out with a friend that night. “After chatting, he gave me his number because I would not give him mine. I called several days later. Our first date was a lunch date during the work week,” says Sharon.
Both born and raised in California, Matt is from San Jose and Sharon was raised in Fremont. With strong roots in the Bay Area, the Haywards decided to call San Ramon home after getting married. “I didn’t realize it at the time, but growing up in Fremont, there was a lot of overcast in the morning. In San Ramon, I loved waking to the sunrise. Blackhawk was well known as the premier place to live, and I would always go to the open homes in search of that perfect home. One day we found the one that was perfect for us and our growing family. We lived there for 18 years. In 2020, and about to become empty nesters, we downsized to a smaller home yet still stayed in Blackhawk,” says Sharon.
After serving in the United States Marine Corps, Matt received his degree in Criminal Justice from West Valley College, San Jose. He served for 20 years in law enforcement before retiring in 2018.
Sharon received her Bachelor’s Degree from San Jose State University in Business Administration. She worked in the family business as a third party claim administrator specializing in mass transit, trucking and public entity claims. Her most notable clients were the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway & Transportation District, Santa Clara Valley Transportation District, San Mateo Transit District and many other transit districts throughout the state. Since selling the company in
2012, she has worked for various insurance companies, establishing their own claims departments.
Youth sports were a big part of the Hayward’s life in our community. Matt has coached youth football for San Ramon Valley Thunderbirds Football and high school football at Monte Vista High School. Sharon was an assistant cheer coach and board member for San Ramon Valley Thunderbirds Football and Cheer. She also volunteered for several positions with the Mustang Soccer League and was involved in fundraising for Tassajara Hills Elementary and Monte Vista High School Football. Matt is a member of the VFW, American Legion and Marine League.
Being active around our community is important to Matt and Sharon. Both enjoy hiking around Mount Diablo. Sharon enjoys road cycling and more recently has taken up mountain biking. You can also see both of them riding around on their e-bikes.
The Haywards have three adult children who all graduated from Monte Vista High School. Kenny is the oldest. He played both youth and high school soccer and high school lacrosse. He is an ER nurse in Reno, married to Melanie, with a 3-1/2-year-old son named Owen. David played both youth football and rugby and high school football. He is currently attending West Point Military Academy and playing for Army football. Julia is attending Santa Barbara City College. She was in youth cheerleading and was on both the high school cheer squad and stunt team. The family is completed by two dogs named Murphy and Morgan and a cat named Jazz.
8 FEBRUARY 2023 Resident Feature
Travel and visiting their kids and grandchild make up a big part of Sharon and Matt’s retirement. “We visit our kids whenever we get the chance. We visit Reno often and have recently traveled to New York, Colorado and Texas to watch David’s football games. We also just returned from a trip to Ireland,” adds Sharon.
Both Sharon and Matt agree that they are grateful to have been able to raise their family in Blackhawk. “We lived in Silver Maple for 18 years before downsizing and moving to the Golf Villas inside the main gate in 2020. We wanted to stay in Blackhawk because of the safe community, friendly people, proximity to downtown Danville, airports and Mt. Diablo. We have thought about and have looked into moving elsewhere, but we have not found any place better than right here. In both homes, we have met some great neighbors and get together often for parties and events.”

A Place to Rest and Reflect
By Aly Baker, Bloomers Publicity
Sitting
serenely by the majestic oak tree in front of Lakeside Club House is a new 4-foot teak bench that was donated by the Blackhawk Bloomers Garden Club to commemorate their 25th anniversary. The tree where the bench sits is a Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia). According to Kevin Sullivan, Head of Agronomy at Blackhawk Country Club, the tree is probably 100+, maybe even closer to 150 years old. Surrounding the bench, 150 daffodils were planted, which will add a springtime splash of color. The bench is a lovely place to sit, relax and reflect.
2022-2023 Bloomers Executive Board
Twenty-five years ago, a group of 5 Blackhawk residents got together over coffee and decided to start a women’s group dedicated to the interest and love of gardening. Within the year they had 16 members, and 25 years later that number has surged to 175+. While the size of the group has changed, the purpose has not. The Blackhawk Bloomers is a nonprofit with the goal of fostering an interest in gardens and gardening through educational programs and social events. The group remains true to this purpose 25 years later.
Most recently the group planted over 1600 daffodil bulbs by the East gate that will burst into bloom this spring.

February Craft: Modern Pillows
By Michelle Barry, Resident since 2018
Ihave been having a hard time finding pillows that I like. I came across this article and fell in love with these pillows. Jamie from Sew Brainy Designs created a 2022 Make it Modern Pillows series last year. She created a new pillow design for each month.
You can follow Jamie at Sew Brainy Designs is on Instagram @ sewbrainy or on the internet at www.sewbrainy.com. Jamie designed these pillows for Riley Blake Designs on Instagram at @ rileyblakedesigns.
Here’s the link to the pattern and instructions: https://blog.rileyblakedesigns.com/ make-it-modern-pillows-october-tutorial/
These instructions are very visual with easy to follow graphics and step by step instructions.
I love the fabric colors that were chosen for the original pillow, so I decided to stay with those fabrics. You could change it up with your own scraps or completely different fabrics.
I completed two pillows over a weekend. I was pleasantly surprised at how they turned out. I like them even better than the photos.
Here’s a peek at the process, assembling the pieces and the second photo shows a quilted pillow front and a completed pillow.
January had many rainy days and a few days with no internet, so I was happy to fill the time with creating these pillows.
You can zoom in on the photos on Instagram at #bhlmcrafts.
Hope your February is full of arts and crafts. I hope a little inspiration was received upon reading this article.
Best,
Michelle Barry

San Ramon Valley Education Foundation Updates
By Alicia Gee, Project Manager
Celebrate Innovation in Education:
The San Ramon Valley Education Foundation Major Gifts and Endowment Fund hosts this yearly event to share with our community the state of the San Ramon Valley Unified School district and to raise funds to continue providing financial support for long-term innovative, educational programs in our district.
Teacher Grants awarded: SRVEF Announces 2022 Grant Awards
The San Ramon Valley Education Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2022 Teacher Grants. Once again, SRVEF partnered with DonorsChoose.org. As a result of matching funds and external donations, SRVEF funded ALL ELIGIBLE grants.
This year, SRVEF has awarded 151 grants totaling $34,456.12, including 24 music and science grants funded by the SRVEF Endowment Committee.
Because of a generous match from an anonymous donor, we were able to expand our eligibility requirements, funding grants that were submitted as early as August 1st and as recent as November 28, 2022. 33 schools had one or more grants funded by SRVEF. 125 Teachers had at least one grant funded, while some were funded multiple times.
The SRVEF Grant Program is funded primarily through proceeds from the Run for Education and the Auction for Education. The Endowment Grant Program is funded through our annual donation drive and annual recognition lunch, “Celebrate Innovation in Education.”
Unfunded teacher grants will remain active on the DonorsChoose website for approximately two more months during which time the grants may continue to receive external funding, including funding from individual and corporate donors, and matching fund donors. If a grant is not fully funded by the expiration date, any external money pledged is returned to the donor.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue Giving Them Another Chance
By Sue James, President
HEIDI
East County Animal Shelter looking for his forever home
Have you ever been lucky enough to meet a fur baby that just melts your heart? One that you look at and wonder how this girl hasn’t been scooped up yet? Well, then you should come meet Heidi at the East County Animal Shelter at 4595 Gleason Drive in Dublin! She is a beautiful German Shepherd mix - about 3 years old with beautiful teeth. Heidi is super sweet, has gorgeous golden eyes, and once she gets to trust you, she’ll just flop over for a belly rub. She will also look at you adoringly when you ask her to shake - and then she’ll gently give you her paw.
Heidi is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated and ready to go to her new forever home with someone who is looking for a loving and gentle big dog.
TIGGER TIGER
TVAR FOSTER KITTEN PROGRAM
Tigger is a tiny little kitten with a very big personality and a loud purr! She loves to cuddle up on her foster mom’s lap, push herself underneath her chin or settle in her lap, curl up, and nap for hours. She also loves to play and goes absolutely crazy for her wand toys. She can be quite possessive of her toys and often carries a toy mouse around the house while growling and then leaves it in her food bowl. She is also a huge foody and wants anything she can get her little paws on! She is the only kitten in her litter, but she has learned to get along with several other “only children” kittens throughout her stay in her foster home. Tigger is spayed and microchipped, current on vaccinations and has tested negative for FIV/FeLV.
TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes.
Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) - Giving them Another Chance
TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.
All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted.
We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens and the Public.

Introducing Maddie Cakes!
By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
Q&A with 11-year-old, Maddie Cheng. Sixth grader at Diablo Vista Middle School.
Q: What’s the story behind Maddie Cakes?
A: It started in 2020, when I was bored during quarantine and my mom would buy me box cake to make. After several times of making box cake, I learned that I actually really liked baking. I started trying new, homemade recipes from scratch and using better quality ingredients. I practiced piping and experimented with different kinds of flavors. Then I started making free samples and giving it to family and friends at school. After all that I realized my cupcakes actually not only tasted, but also looked really good. I had always loved watching Shark Tank, and wanting to be an entrepreneur, so I thought starting this business would be a great way to start learning how to be one, and to help spread sweetness to the world!
Q: What do you like about baking and creating sweet treats for people’s celebrations?
A: I love using my imagination to create these unique designs for people’s celebrations. I love the creativity to make a cupcake. I love choosing different colors to dye my frosting, and it is overall just fun to do.
Q: What are your goals for Maddie Cakes?
A: My goals are to continue to grow my business, and to put a smile on each of my customer’s faces when they see the cupcakes.
Q: What’s your favorite kind of cupcake to eat and to make?
A: My favorite cupcake to eat is the chocolate cupcake because it feels like the chocolate flavor melts in your mouth like fudge. My favorite cupcake to make is vanilla, because it has ingredients that are fun to mix together and to experiment with.
Q: What’s your favorite creation you’ve made? What’s the strangest request you’ve gotten?
A; My favorite creation I made was the mini cupcakes I made for a wedding. I loved the more simple/exquisite look of the cupcakes. I loved using fresh flowers on them, fresh flavors, and experimenting with the different sophisticated colors. The strangest request I got was to make blueberry cupcakes. I had never made them before, but I loved taking on the challenge! After many practices I ended up making a vanilla cupcake with a blueberry filling and a buttercream frosting.
Q: Are you taking new orders? How can people learn more?
A: Yes I am taking new orders! People can learn more by either DMing me on Instagram at LOVEMADDIECAKES10 or they can email me at LOVEMADDIECAKES10@gmail.com to get more information and request my menu.
Q: Anything else to share with the Blackhawk community?
A: I have had great support from my community ss well as great support from my mom for always being there to help me!

Welcome Niners 2023 Captain Lil Giovanzana
I’m honored to be Captain of Blackhawk Niners for 2023.
My husband Tony and I moved to Danville from the Peninsula in 2011 to be close to our two married daughters who live in Walnut Creek and Danville. It was a great move and since that time we’ve been blessed with six grandchildren.
Our golf journey began in 2015 when we joined Crow Canyon Country Club. After retirement in 2017 we got more serious about golf. We love this sometimes frustrating game and enjoy being outdoors and playing with fun people. We toured Blackhawk in September 2020 and were impressed with the facilities and all the club had to offer. We live just outside the East Gate and two golf courses sealed the deal!
Niners are a fun, lively group of women who play every Thursday, often with games and themed events. Charm Day is our friendly monthly tournament offering optional competition for prizes. Niner Member/Guest Invitationals are legendary. Think “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “Ooh la la Paris”. Last November, we introduced the Angel Cup Tournament and invited a select group of clubs to promote nine hole tournaments with reciprocal hosting.
I am excited for the coming year and thankful for new friends and the camaraderie of Blackhawk Niners. I anticipate a great year of golf, fun and friendship!

World Cup Watch Party
The Mustang Soccer League membership, family, friends, and community members gathered at our Provident Credit Union Fields at the Mustang Soccer Complex on November 21st to enjoy our World Cup Watch Party, USA vs. Wales. We lucked out on the sun shining, and a great time was had by all, enjoying the world’s most beloved game. The San Jose Earthquakes generously partnered with us and sponsored the event by providing a huge screen to view the game live. Drawing tickets were sold for special prizes and many participated in our Toys for Tots Toy Drive. Half of the proceeds from the ticket sales went towards the purchase of additional toys from the local Toys for Tots branch in Concord and while the other half went into our Player Financial Hardship Fund.
A very special thank you to all who attended, helped with the event, and our following donors:

The HOX Swim Team Updates
By Coach Sean Quakenbush and Lisa Wirth Images courtesy of HOX Swim Team
Itis no surprise that with all the rain that California has seen in the new year that our HOX swimmers have taken it in stride and still hit the deck ready to get in the water. High School Prep has just wrapped up and the team is getting ready for Spring swim. Our new HOX theme will be revealed at our HOX kickoff party on March 5th as well as an opportunity to try on suits, check out and purchase new apparel and connect with the coaches and your swim friends. If you want to give swim a try or have any questions, please reach out to Coach Sean: seanq@blackhawkcc.org
We’d like to take this time to highlight and re-introduce you to our head coach and aquatics director, Sean Quackenbush. You can’t miss Coach Sean the minute you step on deck. He commands the kid’s attention in a respectful manner and all heads are turned his way when he is giving them an example.
Sean is an accomplished and experienced athlete and coach. During his swimming career he was the Minnesota High School State Champion in the 100-yard butterfly, a three-time Big Ten Champion and record holder at the University of Minnesota. Sean is a a 12-time All-American and a University of Minnesota Hall of Fame inductee. He was named to the USA National Swim Team and swam in the US Olympic Trials, World Cup Games, and the US Open, where he was a Gold and Silver medalist. In addition to being a highly decorated swimmer, Sean is also an accomplished coach and leader. Following his competitive career, he was an Assistant Coach for the Division one swim program at Michigan State University. He holds a MS in Kinesiology with an emphasis on Sport Psychology from MSU and has hosted dozens of swim clinics and taught private lessons for swimmers of all ages.
2023 will be Sean’s 8th season with the HOX. In 2022 Sean lead the HOX to a third VSA league championship. Sean is passionate about transforming good swimmers into great swimmers. Sean also believes that swimming teaches important life lessons like working hard, setting, and striving for goals, competing, and forming friendships that last a lifetime. Sean lives in Concord with his wife Natasha and his two sons.
As a HOX parent writing this article, we have been with Coach Sean for his entire eight years. Because of what Coach Sean has brought to our team, my swimmers have excelled in water polo (both in club and High School), continued to swim in High School as well as have gotten certified in life guarding and work under Coach Sean at the Blackhawk Pool. He and his staff are great mentors to the swimmers.

A Longer Lasting “Tox” Is Finally Here
By Stephen J. Ronan MD FACS, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery and MedSpa
In a previous article this past year, I mentioned that a new longer-lasting neurotoxin was in development and soon to be released to select practices throughout the country. Well I’m thrilled to share that Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa was selected as one of only a few in Northern California to have early access to DAXXIFY, the only FDA-approved, peptide-formulated neuromodulator that has been shown to last for up to 6 months to 9 months.
DAXXIFY is a new and very safe injectable treatment that is used to treat wrinkles, creases and frown lines on the face. While effects of other neuromodulators, such as Dysport, Botox and Xeomin, last for approximately 3-4 months, DAXXIFY patients have reported seeing results that last at least twice as long. That translates to 2 treatments per year compared to the usual 3-4.
With more people returning to socializing, in-person meetings and work, most women and men want to look and feel their very best – for their own self-confidence and to project a more professional, polished look. That’s a primary reason why many cosmetic procedures have exploded in popularity over the last few years. These procedures include tox injections, as well as dermal fillers, laser treatments and surgical procedures.
So how does this longer lasting tox called DAXXIFY work? Like the other brands, it is a simple protein that is injected into a muscle creating weakness. Muscle action is what causes the wrinkles of frown lines, forehead furrow and smile lines. Look in the mirror and make these expressions to see the muscles at work. By precisely and temporarily weakening these muscles, we can soften the expression and reduce or eliminate many wrinkles.
During the 5-minute procedure, DAXXIFY injections are carefully administered to target areas. The treatment is quick, easy and requires little to no downtime. DAXXIFY does not have significant side effects or safety concerns. As with any injectable treatment, patients may experience a little redness or mild discomfort at the injection site, but these mild side effects will resolve themselves on their own. Most patients will notice results within a day or two after their treatment and can expect results to last 6 to 9 months, or twice as long as other tox treatments.
For more information on DAXXIFY or any other one of our treatment options, please stop by the practice or give us a call at (925) 736-5757. We look forward to hearing from you!

Pebble Beach 2023
By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990
For many years we have been celebrating 2 special days at the iconic Spanish Bay Inn during the AT&T golf tournament. We celebrate our Hall-of-Famer son, MJ’s Birthday, who was born on the Super Bowl, and our wedding anniversary.
We love everything about Spanish Bay. Roy’s Restaurant, superior service, and the Bagpiper playing on the ocean at sunset is an experience that is a ‘must do’ and never gets old.
The smell of the wood burning fireplaces and sight of the ocean vistas when you check into the iconic Inn is a remedy to immediately ‘soothe’ anyone’s soul.
This year was extra special as we were introducing MJ’s autobiography ‘Life Of A Champion’.
The book is a chronicle of many great experiences. 48 Gold Medals, multiple State and National Championships, playing golf all over the world, meeting many famous people, and being inducted into 3 Hall of Fames for his ‘many‘ accomplishments on and off the golf course has resulted in a full rich life. In this book, MJ has shared these wonderful memories.
His book is in great demand by many families and friends. Autographed copies will only be available from MJ and in the Blackhawk Country Club Pro shop. As parents, we are extremely proud of our ‘Hall-of-Famer’ son.
Congratulations MJ. You have ‘inspired greatness’ to many all over the world.
Since you retired from golf, we are impressed with your new chapter of life helping to make the world a better place with your involvement with the Danville Rotary, Wheelchair Foundation and your successful annual MJ Gift Of Life Red Cross Blood Drive held at Blackhawk CC. We are also looking forward to your new venture with Pride Mobility.
To request an autographed copy of “Life Of A Champion”, send an email to lmccol3525@aol.com.

Sweet Potato Vegetable Pie
By Parisa Z. Ambwani, Resident since 1983
Serves 6
Preheat oven to 350-degree F.
Grease generously a 12 ½ -inch wide by 2 ½ -inch deep frying pan/skillet
• 1 large, sweet potato, partially oven cooked, grated (about 2 cups)
• 1 large onion (grate onion, squeeze out the juice and discard)
• ½ cup parsley, cleaned, chopped
• 2 tablespoons mint, dried
• 2 tablespoons basil, dried
• 2 teaspoons ginger root, peeled, grated
• 1 teaspoon tapioca flour* OR ½ teaspoon cornstarch
• ¼ teaspoon sea salt OR to taste
• 1 dash black pepper, freshly ground
• 5-6 eggs, slightly beaten
• ½ cup olive oil
In a mixing bowl, except olive oil, combine and mix all ingredients (sweet potato, onion, parsley, mint, basil, ginger, tapioca flour, salt, pepper, and eggs.)
Add oil into frying pan and heat until hot (please see note.) Pour the mixture into frying pan. Level the mixture and cover with lid and reduce the heat to medium. Cook for 4-5 minutes over medium heat, then uncover the top and continue cooking until the edge is slightly brown. Cut pie in 4 sections and flip over and cook the other side for 2-3 minutes or until done.
*Tapioca flour is derived from Cassava Root, and like cornstarch is used as a chief ingredient for thickening in puddings, pie fillings, custards, and soups. Tapioca flour like cornstarch thickens as it cools. As a cornstarch substitute use 2 tablespoons tapioca for 1 tablespoon cornstarch.
Note: oil must be hot enough (but not to smoke) to set outside of vegetable pie mixture at once.
Holistic Journey: Occurring in the world happen at the speed of universe time. We must be in tune with this constantly flowing time to keep up with innovations in thought and wisdom.

Hot Hot Hot
By David Tom, Resident Since 1990
Itseems like Hot Summer days, Hot fun and Hartz Avenue Hot rods are a distant memory, but they will be here again soon. Though not soon enough, I’m sure. Danville’s Hot Summer Sundays Car Show cruised into our beautiful downtown on July 17, 2022 and brought its party scene masquerading as a car show. In its 24th year, the show featured hundreds of hot rods, classic cars, collector cars, customdesigned cars, and cars of the muscle variety. Not enough? How about the relaxing vibe from the live music playing in the background. There was something for everyone including vendor booths, awards for the favorite collector vehicles and generous local sponsors. Our town is awesome year-round, so please don’t forget to support your local downtown shops even when things are not Hot Hot Hot.

The Monte Vista Sophomore Class Initiative
By Dylan Reyes, Sophomore at Monte Vista High School
Revolutionizing the Monte Vista Class of 2025---That was the goal shared by the MV Sophomore Class Officers, or as they are known in the Leadership classroom, the “Sophicers,” as they developed their ambitious plan to transform their class. At the beginning of the school year, the Sophicers identified several goals. I have been fortunate enough to be a Sophicer this year and can confidently say that Leadership is always one of the highlights of my day. When brainstorming our goals for the school year, we decided to place an emphasis on maximizing transparency within the class in order to create a more united student body. To realize our vision, we pioneered the first-ever Monte Vista Class Website. This website integrates the different components of a much larger initiative centered around uniting the class, increasing student involvement, and enhancing the student voice. Digitizing information on this website provided us with the opportunity to clearly outline class goals, thereby strengthening the class as a whole. After several months of edits and revisions, the Monte Vista Class of 2025 website is up and running. Equipped with several practical features including a fully updated calendar, Sophomores can learn about upcoming class events several months in advance. Furthermore, volunteer and leadership opportunities are offered to all students hoping to take an active role within our class. Thanks to the implementation of the new “Student Boards System,” Sophomores can complete a brief interest form to become
a member of one of the six newly installed “Student Boards.” Each student board will work to address a specific area of need, meeting on a monthly basis to discuss new ideas and to finalize proposals for the Leadership class. For instance, students with an affinity towards artistic design can apply for the Spirit Design Board, where they will be tasked with designing apparel for the class. Other students who want to provide insight on how our class allocates and raises funds can apply for the Fundraising and Finances Board. These featured boards are only a couple of the different ways that students can contribute to the class. In other words, this system benefits all Sophomores, providing non-Leadership students with countless opportunities to get involved while making a tangible impact within their school community. By keeping the student voice at the forefront of the discussion, this will ensure that Leadership is accurately representing the students that it serves. Perhaps the most exciting feature that this website offers is the online store. In-person sales were often chaotic and inefficient. Understanding this challenge, we created the online store to allow for smoother transactions. Parents, students, and community members can simply visit the online store, place an order, and expect to receive their apparel in a reasonable timeframe.
In my opinion, what makes Leadership a valuable class is the fact that it unlocks the innovative side of students. Unlike conventionally structured classes, Leadership is almost entirely student driven. During Leadership, students are given the reins to facilitate their own discussions and to make important decisions that affect the entire school. Without the constraints of a normal class, students have the autonomy to come up with unique solutions to address issues on campus. It is perhaps under these conditions that creativity and innovation flourish.
As the Monte Vista Class of 2025 looks ahead towards the future, you can guarantee that ingenuity will be at the center of everything that we hope to accomplish. With the class website laying the foundation for future improvements, Sophomores can expect to see plenty of positive changes. To access the Sophomore Class website, please visit mvhs25.com.
Dylan Reyes is a current Sophomore at Monte Vista High School. He is a first time author for the publication who loves creative writing. At Monte Vista, Dylan is an active member within his school community serving as a Sophomore officer in the Leadership class. Furthermore, Dylan is a proud Filipino American who sought to enrich the student body when he founded the first Filipino American Student Union at his school. Dylan’s role in the Danville Youth Council also allows him to stay updated about the latest news within our town. In his free time, Dylan enjoys talking about and playing basketball with his friends, playing fantasy football, and podcasting, a more recent hobby of his. Dylan is excited to pursue this writing opportunity and looks forward to highlighting all of the positive developments at Monte Vista High School and the Blackhawk Community at large.

The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Grande Lakes
By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012
Closeto the theme parks but in another world, Grande Lakes Orlando, which includes the Grande Lakes Ritz Carlton Golf Club, is an upscale destination resort. Orlando in the winter and spring is an excellent destination for golf, pool, and sun.
Sharing the Grande Lakes Orlando property is the J.W. Marriott, the Ritz Carlton, and the Grande Lakes Ritz Carlton Golf Club. Guests of either hotel can use either pool, the Golf Club and most of the amenities of either hotel complex.
The J.W. Marriott pool complex at Grande Lakes Orlando is extensive and caters to the more active & family-oriented guest. You can be sure to find a lazy river. In contrast, the pool at the Ritz Carlton at Grande Lakes Orlando is quiet and more genteel.
Ritz Carlton Golf Club
The Grande Lakes Ritz Carlton Golf Club is available to guests of both hotels, the Members Club, and the public. Directly across the lagoon from the J.W. Marriott pool area, the Club provides easy access to play and practice while the family or other non-golfers in your party are at the pool.
Because it’s a resort layout, the 18-hole Greg Norman course at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club comprises wide fairways, limited rough and large greens. The fairways were ideal, and the greens were firm. Winding through Orlando’s woodlands and lagoons, nine holes have water as a hazard.
The Caddie Concierge program at the Grande Lakes Ritz Carlton Golf Club provides caddies to assist the group other than carrying the clubs for $30/player. The weekly golf membership provides seven consecutive days of unlimited golf, cart and practice facility use. Depending on the time of the year the price varies from $350 to $650.
The practice area is spacious with excellent turf. The practice greens were almost identical to the course greens. A mid-size short game area in close to the hotel is convenient for practice sessions.
The golf is fantastic. The Grande Lakes Ritz Carlton Golf Club Orlando hosts the PNC Father/Son Challenge on the Senior PGA Champions Tour. With a choice between the Marriott or the Ritz-Carlton resort hotels, it’s a great destination for families who also need premier golf.

The Big Ring Trend
We Are Seeing for 2023
By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry
Welove to help celebrate your life’s most precious moments and with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we are offering a unique way to commemorate your engagement, relationship milestone or special anniversary. With any purchase of $3995 or more (some exclusions apply so check store for details), you will receive a hot air balloon ride for two over the beautiful Napa Valley and a champagne toast and wine tasting at our downtown Napa tasting room!
With the season of love upon us, we thought engagement ring trends would be a perfect topic to cover – namely because this trend is one that can be accomplished with just an addition to your existing ring or kept in mind as a new ring is selected! Though the sea of rings is infinite, one will inevitably stand out above all the others and become “the one.” Here is what we are seeing as the biggest trend for engagement rings in 2023.
Stacking fashion rings aren’t new, but in the bridal space it’s a trend that is really gaining momentum. A beautiful engagement ring begins the journey of a stacked look. When searching for an engagement ring, consider a classic solitaire in a shape you desire. Alternatively, a sparkling halo with a gorgeous pavé band is eye-catching as well as timeless. Or slip back to times past with intricate filigree, beadwork, or engravings on the band that will stand out like designs by Tacori and Verragio.
Should you decide that the stacked look is right for you as well, take care that the diamond is set in such a way that other bands that sit beneath it create a combination that is both attractive and comfortable. Women are happy to not just wear their engagement and wedding ring anymore but to add on with curved diamond bands and other interesting stackable rings allowing them to really express themselves and showcase their unique personal style. These “additions” not only look trendy and modern but make great gifts to celebrate important occasions such as birthdays and anniversary gifts.
When selecting your accompanying bands, consider whether the style will work with other rings over time. You will want to add pieces that mark commemorative occasions, such as anniversaries, birthdays, the birth of your children, or just periodic celebrations of your love. Whatever you choose, your rings should be a reflection of your love and spark memories of the moments shared throughout your life.
Join us at one of the five Padis Jewelry locations (our three San Francisco stores, our new Padis location at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek, or our downtown Napa location) to view fine designers such as Tacori, Verragio, A Jaffe, Gabriel & Co and Forevermark and find the ring(s) that speak to you. Our stores are always a comfortable non-commissioned shopping environment.
Whatever you select, your ring stack should always be a reflection of your love and spark memories of the moments shared throughout your life. And don’t forget, we offer complimentary cleanings at all of our locations. Be sure to stop by one at your convenience - you’d be surprised at what a simple cleaning can do!
Our team at Padis Jewelry is happy to assist you in any way. Don’t hesitate to visit us at the store, schedule a virtual consultation at padisjewelry.com or shoot us an email at concierge@padisjewelry. com.
