Pat attended Lynbrook High School in San Jose and Chico State University. Trina attended Saint Francis High School in Mountain View and the University of Arizona. They both found themselves back in the Bay Area to launch their careers. From the start of his career, Pat has had the goal of helping individuals, families and businesses optimize their wealth. After spending more than 25 years as a financial advisor, he recently started his own financial advising company called PEAK360 Wealth Management. The company started three years ago with two employees and has since grown to a firm with 15 partners, advisors and staff. “I love helping my clients, and working with my great team of advisors and staff. Each day is an adventure,” says Pat. Trina worked as a buyer/ planner for Mervyn’s Corporate. She stayed with them until they were sold and has stayed home with the kids since then. The Kelley family has always had a love of soccer. “Pat and I have both played soccer all our lives. We still play indoor and outdoor soccer on adult leagues. We have traveled and played in many tournaments all over the West Coast. Not only that, but we have met many great families and friends through our love of soccer. Our kids have grown up with other kids at the fields and to this day remain close friends,” says Trina. All three of the Kelley children have played soccer for Mustang Soccer League. Trina has coached for more than nine years, and Macy recently has worked as a referee. Their daughters, Madeline and Macym have both played softball as well, and Madeline has also taken up club volleyball. Both Will and Macy are on the Blackhawk HOX Swim Team.

Meet the Kelleys: Pat, Trina, Maddie, Macy and Will By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010 It was a quest for financial advice that led Katrina (Trina) to Pat. “I needed some financial advice with my savings and Pat was referred to me by a colleague. We officially met at Gordon Biersch restaurant in San Francisco,” says Trina. The couple started out as friends that shared a love of soccer. They played on a team together and eventually started dating. “We got engaged in Tuscany in 2002 at a converted castle. We were married October 25th, 2003 at the Presidio in San Francisco. The day was one of the hottest days in history, topping well over 100 degrees. It was a great wedding with a live band playing all types of music from Van Halen, U2 to traditional wedding classics and an open bar,” shares Trina. Both raised in San Jose, the couple decided to call San Francisco home and after getting married, they lived in a beautiful Painted Lady house in SF. After grueling commutes to the East Bay for work, they decided it made more sense to live on this side of the bay. “We bought our first house on the west side of Alamo on the trail. That was where our oldest daughter, Maddie, was born. After having grown our family, we realized our Alamo house wasn’t an ideal set up for kids, and that led us to Blackhawk. We toured many homes and fell in love with our current home. The house has an incredible backyard with a pool, a playhouse for the kids, room for a swing set and trampoline and wine grapes. We were sold,” says Pat.

Giving back to the community and lending a hand where ever they can is important to Trina and Pat. Pat was on the board and president of the Tassajara Hills Elementary School Foundation for many years. Trina has organized and overseen the school’s auction fundraiser for three years, along with many other events. “Recently, I have been involved with the Crayon Initiative in helping with the melting process of making crayons. Both girls and I are members of the Vista Oak Chapter of the National Charity League. The girls love volunteering for TVAR and Crayon Initiative, where I love working with charities focused on food security,” says Trina. To say the family keeps busy is an understatement. When they do get downtime, they love getting away to their home in Lake Tahoe. “We got a lot of use out of our Tahoe home during the pandemic. It gave us the chance to get outside and hike and bike ride after remote school and work were completed. We recently bought land in Kiawah Island, South Carolina to build a vacation home there. We love to ride bikes, golf and go to the beach,” says Trina. The family has been able to take advantage of some amazing travel opportunities through Pat’s work also. “Some of our top trips include South Africa and Safari, a cruise through Greece and Turkey, along with Portugal, England, and Italy. When the kids were younger we were able to take them to many of the domestic locations including Hawaii, Miami, San Diego, Palm Springs and local locations such as San Francisco,” adds Trina. Other hobbies the Kelley family enjoys include golf, skiing, hiking, swimming and generally getting outdoors. They also enjoy rooting for any of the Bay Area pro sports teams. Pat is a big sports fan. He is a season ticket holder for the 49ers and a passionate Giants fan. “We got to attend a game earlier this year, and it felt great to be at the ballpark after such a long break. I have been eagerly awaiting getting back to Levi’s Stadium to cheer on the 49ers,” says Pat. For the past 10 years, Pat has also tried his hand at turning the Cabernet and Merlot vines at his home into wine. But, he’s quick to warn that he’s still mastering the craft — If you’re on his good side, he’ll give you a bottle; If you’ve done him wrong, though, he’ll give you two.

JANUARY 2022

A Labradoodle named Ruby, and 3 cats named Baggins, Elsa and Anna complete the Kelley family. You may have seen Ruby out for her daily long walks in the community. She has made so many furry and two-legged friends during COVID. She is quite popular in the neighborhood. After calling Blackhawk home for 15 years, the Kelley family says they are truly grateful to be able to raise their kids in this special place, “We have lovely neighbors that have watched our kids grow up. During the pandemic, we were out with our dog Ruby doing daily walks and everyone waves and recognizes us. We have met many great families through the school. You can often find us getting together for drinks at Thelma’s with friends or relaxing in our backyards hanging out. We have many great travel stories with our friends from this area also. The men have done two marathons, Buenos Aires and Venice along with countless backpacking and skiing trips. The Ladies prefer Cabo, Palm Springs, and Sonoma for their breaks. Another favorite part of our Blackhawk Experience is the holiday season. We love decorating for Halloween and especially Christmas. You can frequently find us working on the yard for several days stringing lights, adding blow ups and various other decorations for the Holiday season. We have so many neighbors stop and talk with us while we are working. We get a steady stream of cars stopping to take a look. We love to cruise the neighborhood to look at our neighbor’s light shows and decorations. It is truly a special time of year.”

ARF Adoption Stars

Frisbee

Miles

By Cole Kuiper, ARF Looking for a furry friend during this trying time? If you see an animal you’re interested in on our website, just fill out an online inquiry form. Once your inquiry has been received, you will be added to our virtual adoption queue. Meet your forever friend at Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, 2890 Mitchell Drive, Walnut Creek, during adoption hours: Noon to 6 pm Wednesday & Thursday, Noon to 7 pm Friday, and Noon to 6 pm Saturday & Sunday.

One-year-old Frisbee is a lot of fun and enjoys romping around and playing with people and doggie friends. This pup will learn quickly by using yummy treats. He enjoys his playtime with people and loves a good romp with one of his dog friends. In fact, we recommend that Frisbee goes to a home with another dog to help expend his energy. Frisbee currently weighs 52 pounds.

Would you like to be part of the heroic team that saves the lives of rescued dogs and cats? Can you share your talents to connect people and animals? ARF volunteers are making a difference! For more information see our website, www.arflife.org, or call (925) 256-1ARF.

ARF adoption fees: $250 for an adult dog, $350 for a puppy (<6 months), $125 for a special- needs dog, $175 for a special-needs puppy (<6 months), and $125 for a senior dog (7+ years).

Seven-month-old Miles is a sweet and charming lad. He likes to explore his surrounding and take naps, hopefully in a place where he can grab a birds-eye view. Miles will make a great companion for just about anyone! Plus, his adoption fee has already been prepaid by a generous admirer. ARF Adoption fees: $100 for an adult cat, $150 for a kitten (<6 months), $150 for two adult cats, $250 for two kittens, $50 for a special-needs cat, $75 for a special-needs kitten (<6 months), and $50 for a senior cat (7+ years).

Success is the result of a well-designed future. Our business is to help clients make smart financial decisions to navigate the complex financial world that we live in.

While many members of the family are tropical in origin and grown outdoors only in warm-weather places such as Brazil and Hawaii, others do quite well in Walnut Creek’s more temperate climate. Many of the latter ones are terrestrial bromeliads (such as Puya, Dyckia and Hechtia) – that is, ones that grow in soil rather than perched in trees like so many of their tropical relatives. Tri-Valley Animal Rescues By Janine Collins, Blackhawk resident since 1999

Corey - Dog Program At T var

Corey is our little miracle puppy. His mom, Corrine, came to our rescue expecting to deliver puppies very soon. On September 15, 2021, Corrine delivered two puppies. The first very large puppy was a breech birth and even with the valiant efforts of Vets & staff, didn’t survive. Corey was the only other puppy and a heartbeat couldn’t be felt. It was decided to allow Corrine to try naturally giving birth. Much to our amazement and joy, Corey was born alive. After extra medical attention and monitoring, Corrine and Corey came back to their foster home for continued observation. There were a lot of touch and go moments, however our determined little boy slowly showed signs of improvement. Now, at almost 3 months old he only weighs 2.13 lbs. But please don’t let his small size fool you; he’s a very determined puppy and loves to drag toys bigger than himself all around the house.

All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. Foster families get to know each animal’s personality and needs in a home setting allowing TVAR to find the right match so kittens, puppies, dogs and cats - and adopters - thrive! We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter caring for and socializing the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens, and helping them find new forever homes as we did with Opie. For more information see our website: www.tvar.org

TVAR gives deserving animals another chance by taking them into foster care. All TVAR dogs live in foster homes till adopted. Foster families get to know each dog’s personality and needs in a home setting- allowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs and adopters thrive!

Jack Frost - Kitten Program At T var

Meet Jack Frost who is 4 months old. He is the perfect kitten for a family looking for a gentle and confident lap kitten. He is a cuddle bug and fun to play with as well as a great playmate to his fosters young grandchildren. TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes.

Tri-Valley Animal R escue (T var) Giving Them Another Chance

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating just short of 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

The Plantation Course at Kapalua

By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012

Ocean View

First Tee All Carry Par3

T

he Plantation Course at Kapalua boasts breathtaking ocean and mountain views. Ranked #1 in Hawaii by Golf Magazine, the Crenshaw-Coore designed course is a must-play on the Island of Maui. The associated Kapalua Resort provides an extensive variety of villas. The Kapalua Villas with golf and ocean views, the beautiful Ritz-Carlton hotel and the ultra-luxury Montage Kapalua Bay on the ocean are nearby. Home to the PGA Tour’s Tournament of Champions, the Plantation Course provides a range of shot-making challenges depending on teeing ground played and trade wind conditions. Once the site of a former pineapple plantation (hence its name), you meander up, down and along the side of a volcanic mountain. You can expect extreme elevation changes, broad fairways and frequent chasms in multiple directions. Conditioning is superb, and the rough is minimal. The Plantation Course The grand scale of the Plantation Course can be intimidating. Contoured hills, massive bunkers and large fast, undulating greens make for a challenging outing. Understanding the grain and natural break of the greens influenced by the ocean and mountain is essential. The yardage is deceiving as the elevation changes combined with the trade winds make for difficult club selection. Never expect a calm day. Crenshaw and Coore use the natural topography to design an eclectic mix of holes with risk/reward shots. Landing areas are generous with few forced carries. Options to run the ball on the ground or fly to the green reveal an architectural cleverness. With only three Par3’s on the Plantation Course, it’s a Par 73.

A day at the Plantation Course is a unique experience. The quality of the layout, the spectacular views, the randomness of the weather, the superb conditioning and the prominence of golfers who have played here, combine to entice quintessential golfers to make this pilgrimage. The standard golf fee is over $300, but that is what you expect for this course caliber and prominence. Here, it’s worth it. Discounts are available for resort guests and golf packages. Play early; the replay rate is a $115. You’ll want another crack at this course. Public Course Rankings: Golf Magazine: #1 in Hawaii, #40 in the USA. Golf Digest: #23 in the USA.

If You Go: Course Info - Golf at Kapalua Resort includes thirty-six holes of championship golf with the Plantation and the Bay courses. Both courses are open to the public. Location - On the northwest side of the Island of Maui, one hour from the Kahului airport. Google Map Lodging - Kapalua Resort includes the Kapalua Villas, the RitzCarlton Kapalua, and Montage Kapalua Bay.

January Book Review: China Rich Girlfriend By Iman Simab, Resident since 2003

C

hina Rich Girlfriend, by Kevin Kwan, is the sequel of Crazy Rich Asians and is just as exciting as the first book. China Rich Girlfriend takes place two years after the events in the first book, and each part of the book starts with a quote or passage that ties into the story. For example, the prologue begins with a passage from a news article that talks about a terrible car accident that recently occurred. As we continue reading, we are introduced to Bao Shaoyen (who is one of Eddie’s clients) and find out it was her son, Carlton, who was in the accident mentioned in the article at the beginning of the prologue. It turns out Carlton had two passengers with him when he got into the accident, and unfortunately one of the passengers ended up dying. Bao Shaoyen wants Eddie’s help to keep this information from reaching the press because her husband is a top politician, and she is afraid this information would cause him to lose his office. Eddie then blackmails his Aunt Eleanor into helping Bao Shaoyen and that is what eventually leads Eleanor to Rachel’s father.

Just like Crazy Rich Asians, China Rich Girlfriend switches perspective between different characters and gives us an insight to the issues they are dealing with. For example, we have Rachel visiting China and trying to get to know her father and his family. Then we see Kitty Pong (now known as Kitty Tai) trying her best to fit in with the upper-class people but is constantly being shunned by them. Kitty eventually decides to hire Corinna Ko-Tung (a woman who comes from a well-born family) to help her become more sophisticated and acceptable to the upper-class society. Finally, we see how Astrid’s marriage is coming along since the first book. Even though Michael has received an enormous fortune from his company, we see he has started changing for the worse and becoming arrogant. We also see how Astrid and Charlie are starting to get close to each other again since Astrid finds herself confiding in Charlie about some of her problems. It was a bit sad to see how the people who always had wealth and prestige in their family often look down on the people who had to work hard to

18

JANUARY 2022

move their way up in society. Even though they can now afford the same luxuries, they still aren’t always accepted by the upper class unless they behave a certain way (even the rich have certain rules to follow and breaking them can result in losing privileges). The ending of China Rich Girlfriend made me wonder how things were going to play out in the final book. We know Eleanor now approves of Rachel because she is part of China’s wealthy elite, but we don’t know if Su Yi would change her mind. There’s been a few passages in the book where Nick is advised to stay on his grandmother’s good side or he would risk losing his inheritance. The last book is titled Rich People Problems, and I had read the summary that says Nick’s grandmother is on her deathbed and he decides to pay her a final visit (there’s also an argument over her will, which I believe might have something to do with Nick’s inheritance). It really makes me wonder if Nick will be able to patch things up with his grandmother and still be able to inherit her house or if it would go to someone else. Iman Simab graduated from UC Berkeley in 2016 with a degree in English and Journalism. She is passionate about reading and writing. She is always looking for new books to read and hopes to become an author someday. In the meantime, she works as a teacher for Kids’ Country and a library aide for Dougherty Station Library in San Ramon. Iman grew up in Danville and attended Monte Vista High School. She also loves hiking the trails of the Bay Area and exploring nature.

Hoping to Buy Before You Have to Sell? By W. Todd Galde, CrossCountry Mortgage, LLC

ou’re standing by the window, staring into the yard as you sip a warm cup of tea. Smiling to yourself, you think of all the beautiful memories you’ve created with your kids and loved ones over the years. As you reminisce, you find things feel different in your house: a little quieter, a bit larger, and your children have grown and moved out. Is downsizing a good idea at this point in life? Maybe you’ve considered purchasing a smaller property, but the thought of buying before selling feels overwhelming. In that case, we have a fast and easy solution to buy your next home before having to list your current abode!

Unlike traditional mortgages, the NINE Loan allows you to stay in your current home while buying a new one. Benefits of this approach to homebuying include being able to: • • • •

Introducing The NINE Loan

Compete and win with a stronger purchase position by making a non-contingent offer on your next home. Qualify for home financing without income documentation or employment verification even if you’re retired, between jobs, or self-employed with low verifiable income. Obtain a mortgage with a 25% down payment or your existing home’s equity, sufficient post-closing reserves, and a minimum 660 credit score. Take your time to prepare your existing property for market on your own schedule. This reduces the inconveniences of living in your home while it’s for sale. Close on your new home, move in, and then have your agent sell your vacant and fully staged existing property for maximum value after you have moved out.

The NINE Loan can meet unique circumstances because it does not have income or employment requirements. Instead, your full financial profile is the key to financing.

To qualify, you need:

If you’re considering buying before you sell, the NINE Loan could be the solution for you. For more information, visit www. BuyBeforeSell.com or www.TheNINELoan.com.

Life through a Lens

San Francisco Shines Bright By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015

O

ne of my favorite things about the holidays is to go see the city all decked up with holiday lights, tinsel trim and colorful glittery displays that further add to San Francisco’s stunning and magical vibe. For the most part, I love hanging out in the sparkling Union Square and getting awed by the decorative enchanting holiday store windows that are so elaborate and bring lots of joy to all the passersby on Stockton and O’Farrell Streets. The perfect place to click a holiday photo is by the 83 foot Christmas tree with more than 33,000 twinkling lights and 1,100 shining ornaments. Every year, my daughter loves to skate at the holiday ice skating rink here, a wondrous holiday tradition. This is definitely a festive part of town to dine and walk around, to listen to some holiday music on the streets and in the stores, to do some holiday shopping and soak in the holiday cheer.

House on Red Maple Drive in Blackhawk twinkling with colorful lights

As an aspiring photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity!

Holiday lights are one of the simple pleasures of the holiday season and nobody does it better than Blackhawk. It’s a joy to drive around Blackhawk and see all the holiday lights illuminating the homes and sometimes the entire street. Hope my Blackhawk Living Magazine community had a beautiful holiday season. Cheers to 2022 and wishing you all an incredible year ahead! The World is Your Oyster By Tori Draeger Paff, Draeger’s Market

O

ysters have a delicious, intense rush of umami flavor that is unparalleled; eating oysters is a truly unique flavor experience. Fresh, slightly briny oysters can elevate any date night… or go big at your Sunday football viewing party with these classy bites.

Merroir

From the depths of the ocean, oysters can be found around the globe on rocks and piers in the saltiest of waters. Just as the land, terroir, grapes are grown in can affect the taste of wine; the merroir- the environmental factors of the ocean- affect the taste and shape of these shellfish. The salinity of the water around them, the temperature of the water, all plays into the final flavor of the oyster.

Health Benefits of Oysters

Oysters are low in calories and high in micronutrients. On average, 6 oysters contain only 50 calories and 6 grams of protein! Oysters carry a remarkable amount of Vitamin B-12, excellent for brain health and cognitive function; as well provide a rich source of Vitamin D, copper, zinc and manganese contributing to bone health.

Which Oysters Are Best?

Draeger’s Seafood Mangers are partial to the Atlantic Blue Point Oysters from Bevans Oyster Company, located in historic Westmorland Count Virginia. Nestled between the Potomac and

Rappahannock Rivers on a Chesapeake Bay Tributary, Bevans was founded more than fifty years ago. Draeger’s chooses Bevans Oysters because the family-owned company has an illustrious reputation for standards in quality.

How to Eat a Raw Oyster

Step 1: Try it naked. That’s right, no lemon zest, cocktail sauce, or condiment of any type to start with, to allow the oyster’s true flavor to shine through. Step 2: Use your cocktail fork to loosen the oyster from its shell, but not to eat the oyster. Step 3: Keeping the oyster level, gently slip the oyster and liquid into your mouth and chew slightly to release flavor. Step 4: Once you’ve tasted the oyster, you can now add condiments, but delicately as to not overwhelm the original flavor. Step 5: After the oyster has been consumed, flip the shell over so it is apparent that oyster has been eaten.

New Year, New You By Dr. Stephen J. Ronan, MD FACS, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery and MedSpa

E

ach month we perform many cosmetic surgery procedures here at Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa. These include breast lifts, augmentations and reductions, face lifts, neck lifts, tummy tucks and mommy makeovers, liposuction, and a rapidly increasing number of hair transplants. We also offer and perform a wide variety of nonsurgical procedures that can enhance your overall appearance. This month I want to highlight four of our non-surgical treatment options.

Skin Rejuvination with the Fraxis PRO Laser

Fraxis PRO is a new, state-of-the-art technology that features a fractional CO2 laser and RF microneedling all in one platform. With a single treatment you can refresh, refine, and revive your skin…and successfully address sun damage, scars, acne, fine lines and wrinkles. During the 20-30 minute treatment, you typically feel slight tingling while the microsized needles gently penetrate the skin and deliver heat to stimulate collagen production. No dressings are required, there is no downtime after the treatment. Patients typically see significant improvements after one treatment, but 2-3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is recommended to achieve optimal results.

Fat Reduction with CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is the name of a product that was invented to safely freeze off stubborn fat from various areas of the body. This fat freezing method is also known as “cryolipolysis”. CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared procedure that requires no downtime, and is a good treatment option for both women and men alike. On the day of your procedure a highly trained practitioner will placesone or more CoolSculpting pads on the target areas. The pads typically remain in place for around 30-45 minutes, during which time up to 20% of the fat cells in this targeted area will be destroyed. And once

those fat cells are gone and eliminated by your body, they are gone for good!

Cellulite Reduction with QWO

QWO is an exciting new, non-surgical treatment plan for cellulite in women. There are typically three things that cause cellulite’s distinct dimples: over time, your skin thins, fat cells enlarge and push against the skin, and the fibrous bands under the skin’s surface thicken and cause tension. QWO is made from enzymes called collagenases. When injected, these enzymes target and break down the fibrous bands under the skin. Once the tension in the bands is released, fat cells are redistributed to help smooth out surface dimples. It is only FDA-approved injectable for the treatment of moderate to severe cellulite, and we were one of the first practices in the Bay Area to offer this exciting new treatment.

Non-Surgical Hair Restoration

As an extension to our cosmetic surgery practice, we now have a dedicated Blackhawk Hair Restoration Center that specializes offering both men and women a variety of surgical and nonsurgical treatment options depending on what stage and type of hair loss they are experiencing. One very popular offering is our no-cost, no-obligation consultation and high-definition diagnostic hair analysis. We have also developed a unique Blackhawk HairMAXX protocol (medical microneedling) and a platelet-rich plasma hair growth therapy (PRP) that has helped many of our patients achieve their hair restoration goals without the need for hair transplant surgery. If you are interested in learning more about any of these or other procedures, please call us at 925-736-5757 to schedule a free consultation. And from all of us here at Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa, HAPPY NEW YEAR! We look forward to hearing from you… and potentially helping sculpt a new you!

In the Garden

Take the Poinsettia Challenge By Aly Baker, Blackhawk Bloomers Publicity

T

he Poinsettia is the December birth flower and symbolizes good cheer, but when the holidays are over many of us face an age-old question – do I keep it or let it go? If you are up for the challenge here are some tips to extend the life of your poinsettia and get it ready to bloom again. Regular watering should keep your plant looking healthy until March. As the leaves start to drop and blooms fade, cut the stem back to 4-6 inches above the soil, water and fertilize every 2 weeks. This is also a good time to remove and throw out the glitter paper it has been wrapped in for months! By May it is time to move the poinsettia outside. Start in a shady place and slowly introduce it to sun over the next 7-10 days. The plant can stay outdoors until September

Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses

To get the poinsettia to flower for Christmas, the plant must receive complete darkness from 5:00 pm to 8:00 am daily from early October until the first of December. During the remainder of the day, the poinsettia should be in a sunny window. If the above seems like a lot of work you can do what I do, compost your tired plant, and treat yourself to a new poinsettia. Out with the old, in with the new! Crafts Corner

Happy New Year Crafting By Michelle Barry, Resident since 2018

I

t’s the new year! Happy New Year to everyone! I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season. We had a lot of Zoom Celebrations over the holidays. I really miss hugging people, being able to travel freely and large family gatherings. Hopefully, we can get back to some normalcy in this new year. Fingers crossed! Since the weather has gotten colder, I have started making hats and scarves both by crocheting and knitting. I tried knitting (see the grey scarf below)! The videos on the internet, explaining how to make these crafts are endless. Three months ago I didn’t know how to crochet or knit. That is how good these tutorials are.

JANUARY 2022

Here are a few examples of items I’ve made. I hope you are inspired to try crocheting and knitting. There’s something satisfying about it. I can’t explain it. I just love it. Here’s the website for the hat and scarf above. https://www.yarnspirations.com/red-heart-planned-pooling-hatand-cowl-set/RHC0138-015503M.html Yarn is an easy thing to find. You can get it from Joann’s or Michael’s, and there is a store in Danville dedicated to knitting and crocheting called A Yarn Less Raveled (support local businesses). A Yarn Less Raveled not only sells yarn, knitting and crochet supplies, but also offers classes. It is a great way to meet people in your local community. Enjoy your January and I hope to have some Valentine’s Day craft ideas for you in February!

Wine, Food, Golf & Fun

Meritage Napa Valley Resort and Spa By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990

R

ecently, I had the pleasure of staying at the magnificent Meritage Napa Valley Resort and Spa. In addition to this Napa Gem, the Meritage collection offers a laid-back luxury experience in La Jolla, Kauai and Huntington Beach. Napa’s Tuscan designed resort offers world class service, luxury accommodations, cave spa treatments, wedding chapel and business meeting rooms, all close to famous Napa wineries, golf courses and restaurants. Upon arrival, you are greeted with a glass of champagne and a complimentary bottle of wine in your room from the on-site Trinitas tasting room. We had the pleasure of also enjoying a great dining experience at their signature restaurant Olive and

Hay. This restaurant offers great service and selection of wine, cocktails and beer to enjoy with a fabulous menu of ‘picture perfect’ food. We especially enjoyed the meat balls, veal, halibut and Italian donuts with chocolate sauce for dessert. Food is also served at the casual Crush Lounge that also has bowling alleys to challenge you and your friends. In conclusion, Napa Meritage Resort and Spa is a ‘must do’ Napa experience. It is a refreshing place to relax from the rigors of life and enjoy the many Napa wineries. It is only 45 minutes from Danville and we highly recommend staying at this magnificent resort and world class spa.

For over 20 years he has been helping people buy homes and finance big dreams. “I get my biggest enjoyment from working with new first time home buyers or anyone seeking home financing who wants straightforward answers to their complicated questions,” says Todd. “I try to keep things simple, like the ABC’s of Home Financing: Assets, Budget and Credit. Ring in the New Year with a New Look! By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry and The Forevermark Boutique at Broadway Plaza

H

appy New Year from our family to yours! This is the perfect time to kick off the New Year by re-doing the ring you wear and enjoy daily. Resetting your diamond is a great way to get a whole new look. Whether you have a pear-shape, marquise or a classic round brilliant diamond, we at Padis Jewelry can show you the hottest new styles that you will be sure to love. There are endless reasons as to why you would want to re-set your center diamond into a new mounting. Tired of your old setting, not happy with the quality of the ring, the ring was not a design you truly wanted, or you perhaps fell head over heels with a design you saw on Padis Jewelry’s Instagram account? We’re here to help! When updating a ring or remounting your center diamond, there is always the question: well what can I do with my old mounting (setting)?! There are a number of different options, some naturally more costeffective than others.

Still love your ring the way it is? Stop by for a complimentary cleaning service. You’d be surprised at what it can do! Whatever you choose, your rings should be always reflection of your love and spark memories of the moments shared throughout your life. Our team at Padis Jewelry is happy to assist you in any way. Don’t hesitate to visit us at the store, give us a call or shoot us an email at 415-861-5388 or Concierge@padisjewelry.com.

The first option is to keep it! Some of us like to plan ahead and think in terms of taking care of those we love, so keeping your old mounting to make a gift for a loved one, or helping your soon to be son-in-law marry your daughter, is one sentimental option. You can set a complimentary cubic zirconia in it and keep it as a travel ring for vacations. The next option is to have it set with a colored gemstone. Sapphires, emeralds, and amethysts can turn your old mounting into a beautiful, colored-stone ring. This will allow you to keep your ring which may hold sentimental value and wear it as an alternative to your new engagement ring. Remember, no matter the shape of your diamond, it can be remounted into a beautiful new setting. It can be difficult to let go of something with so much personal value attached to it, but Padis Jewelry can help guide you toward the best option for what to do with your piece, and make sure you are well educated in all the different options.
