she always knew in her heart that there was something very special about Jason. “We went our separate ways for college and lost touch for four years until we ran into each other the night before Thanksgiving (aka college night) in downtown Danville. We exchanged phone numbers and went to lunch the very next day at our favorite high school deli, The Brass Delicatessen. We talked for four hours about everything you could imagine. Once we reconnected, sparks flew and, life felt complete, and the rest was history.”
They became very close friends over the following six months, then began dating again and fell head over heels for one another. Klara’s parents gifted her a trip to Maui with any guest of her choice as a college graduation gift. She brought Jason, and he proposed on their first night on the island. “We fell in love with Maui and decided to get married there on July 7, 2006 with 50 of our closest family and friends. It was a magical week spent with the most important people in our lives,” says Jason.
Meet the Bleiers: Family First
By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010 Photos provided by the Bleiers
High school sweethearts, Jason and Klara met in Danville, at Monte Vista High School, in 1995. Jason was 16 years old and Klara was 15 years old. They dated their sophomore year of high school and remained close friends throughout their time at MVHS. They even attended Senior Ball together in 1998. The local couple had their official first date right here in Blackhawk, at Blackhawk Movies 7. Klara says
Jason was born in Mt. Kisco, New York, just north of Manhattan. He grew up in Chappaqua, NY, spending summers at Camp Moosilauke, a sleep-away camp nestled in the White Mountains of New Hampshire (not far from Dartmouth University in Hanover). Although his father’s job brought the family to Alamo, CA in 1989, he continued to fly back to the East Coast for six consecutive years to spend summers at Camp Moosilauke until he was 16. He attended Rancho Romero Elementary School, Stone Valley Middle School, and then Monte Vista High School, class of ‘98. He graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and has been a Realtor in Danville for over 16 years. “I knew in college that I was going to pursue a career in real estate. I’m from a multi-generational family of realtors. My parents, Ralph and Kathie Bleier, had very long and accomplished real estate careers in Danville. They invited me to join the team following college and groomed me to become a successful agent. I have a passion for helping people and absolutely love my career,” says Jason. He and his brother-in-law, AJ Cohen, created the Cohen Bleier Group at Coldwell Banker, Blackhawk office. They are our very own “Property Brothers.”
Klara was born in Bellflower, in Southern California. Her parents relocated to Danville in 1987. She attended Green Valley Elementary School, Los Cerros Middle School, and then Monte Vista High School, class of ‘98. She graduated from UCLA with honors with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History. Klara is an Account Executive for Old Republic Title, Danville, located in the Danville Livery. She loves what she does, and her escrow team is like a second family.
When he’s not helping his real estate clients, Jason loves skiing, playing golf, traveling, camping and spending time with family and friends. He’s also a proud member of Advance Guard for Wounded Warrior Project. He says his family has a long history with the Beth Chaim Congregation. “My parents were founding members of Beth Chaim Congregation on Sycamore Valley Rd. in Danville and were instrumental in helping build the sanctuary. My father, Ralph, was president of the

congregation for several years and helped Beth Chaim with the capital campaign, which ultimately led to breaking ground and building the congregation’s permanent home in Danville.”
Winter sports are Klara’s favorite too “I love skiing in the winter, traveling, camping, cooking, going to the movies, and spending time with family and friends. Klara and her parents, Yoli and Lou Pilastro, have been parishioners of St. Isidore’s Church in Danville since 1989. Klara is a volunteer for the Blackhawk Women’s Scholarship Fund, a non-profit organization whose mission is to increase education opportunities for college-bound young women in financial need in Contra Costa County. It’s incredibly important to her to help deserving, and less fortunate young women get college educations. https://www.bwscholarshipfund. com/
She also volunteers, through Beth Chaim Congregation, for Winter Nights. It is an organization composed of a network of interfaith congregations in Contra Costa County that provides shelter for homeless/displaced families through the winter months while they await housing placement. “I’ve prepared dinner for the families as well as provided childcare. It’s important to remember how difficult it is for hardworking people living paycheck-to-paycheck to keep up with the rising
cost of living in the Bay Area, and all it takes is a hardship like a job loss, caring for a sick parent, etc. to fall behind on bills/rent and find themselves without housing. It’s important that all families, especially children, feel safe and supported,” says Klara.
The couple are both big SF 49ers, Warriors and Sharks Fans. Jason is a die-hard NY Yankees fan, while Klara is an Oakland A’s fan. They love going to games with family and friends.
An 8-year-old Labrador completes the family along with lots of local relatives, “We also have five nieces and nephews who all live in Danville. We are very involved in their lives and activities from sports games, to plays, musicals, recitals and more,” says Klara.
The Bleiers moved into Blackhawk about a year ago. “We’ve always loved this beautiful community. We spent a lot of time in Blackhawk growing up with childhood friends who lived in the gates. We absolutely love our neighbors! We live on a very tightknit street and have felt welcomed by everyone here. They’re incredibly friendly and always look out for each other. A group of 5 long-time residents on our street organize an annual block party at the end of the summer with tons of food and live music,” says Jason.

When History Comes to Life
By Dylan Reyes, Sophomore at Monte Vista High School
As a current AP World student at Monte Vista High School, I have thoroughly enjoyed going into depth about Tang and Song China, Medieval Europe, The Columbian Exchange and other crucial parts of history. However, no matter how detailed our textbooks may be, nothing compares to the real deal. Well luckily, three amazing Monte Vista High School history teachers are offering students a golden opportunity that extends far beyond the classroom, the trip of a lifetime. On this eleven-day adventure that will take place from June 19th-June 29th 2023, Monte Vista AP World and European History students will tour several destinations including Rothenburg, Munich, Lucerne, Heidelberg, and Rhineland on an expedition throughout Germany and Switzerland. Facilitated by EF Educational Tours, the payment for this trip covers everything from lodging, round-trip airfare and entrances to various landmarks.
In hopes of finding out more about the trip itself, I interviewed Ms. Goodman, a World Geography and AP World History teacher at Monte Vista. She is helping to coordinate the trip and will be a teacher chaperone. Ms. Goodman also just happens to be my current AP World teacher. In our interview, Ms. Goodman reflected upon her own Europe trip that she took when she was in high school and recalled how remarkable it was to witness notable historical
attractions in person. She went on to acknowledge the stark contrast between reading “primary and secondary sources” compared to physically seeing these attractions. For Ms. Goodman, gaining these firsthand experiences made her visit all the more special, and she looks forward to this upcoming trip for the same reason. When asked about what she believes her students gain from this experience, Ms. Goodman touched upon how attendees are able to “[see] history come to life” and cited historical events such as the “Renaissance,” elements of which students will be able to identify during the trip. Additionally, Ms. Goodman highlighted how rewarding “being able to experience another culture, see[ing] what people are like in a different country, and immers[ing] yourself with the food, the artwork, and overall experience” can be. In regards to the locations themselves, Ms. Goodman stated that Switzerland was chosen because of its “natural beauty,” as it features attractions such as the “Swiss Alps [and] Lake Lucerne” (Goodman). Germany was chosen specifically because it played an instrumental role in “European history and understanding World Wars” (Goodman).

As a student who is fortunate enough to be taking this trip during the upcoming summer, I can’t help but feel both nervous and excited at the same time. Admittedly, I have never traveled anywhere without my family before, and so the thought of going on this adventure without them is slightly intimidating. But at the same time, I look forward to the inevitable feelings of independence and liberation that I will experience when traveling on my own, with my friends and teachers. In school, students sometimes wonder when they will be able to apply what they have learned to a real life setting; Something tangible that extends beyond their textbooks and exams. This trip enables students to do just that, exploring the world and immersing themselves into different cultures while making memories that will last a lifetime.
Dylan Reyes is a current Sophomore at Monte Vista High School. He is a first time author for the publication who loves creative writing. At Monte Vista, Dylan is an active member within his school community serving as a Sophomore officer in the Leadership class. Furthermore, Dylan is a proud Filipino American who sought to enrich the student body when he founded the first Filipino American Student Union at his school. Dylan’s role in the Danville Youth Council also allows him to stay updated about the latest news within our town. In his free time, Dylan enjoys talking about and playing basketball with his friends, playing fantasy football, and podcasting, a more recent hobby of his. Dylan is excited to pursue this writing opportunity and looks forward to highlighting all of the positive developments at Monte Vista High School and the Blackhawk Community at large.

The Magnolia Course at Disney World
By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012
Disney Magnolia Course is the highest-rated course of the four distinct courses near Disney World - Lake Buena Vista, Magnolia, Oak Trail, and Palm. Disney incorporates golf into their blend of entertainment offerings to appeal to a broader audience beyond their Orlando theme parks. These popular courses receive a tremendous play volume during the peak winter months. Imagine a splendid alternative to a day at the theme park for the ardent golfer.
Magnolia and Palm are the original courses that opened in 1970. Lake Buena Vista began two years later. A Par3 course, Oak Trail, opened in the late 1980s. Magnolia and Palm hosted a PGA Tour event, the Disney Classic, for forty-two years ending in 2013. Notable professional golfers have teed it up at Disney. We played the Magnolia course as the more challenging track and hosted the final round of the tournament. Named after its magnificent trees, the features include elevated, large greens, and good-sized fairways. Colorful florae including oleander, crape myrtle are abundant. Disney Magnolia is longer than Disney Palm course by ten yards per hole. A set of tournament tees at 7516 for championships are available. Look for the turtles, osprey, and turkeys and keep your distance from snakes and alligators.
Greens were slow and exhibited signs of wear due to the volume of play. But it’s an excellent track and a must-play for golfers on a Disney vacation. A bunker in the shape of Mickey Mouse fronts the green on the Par3 Hole #6. Twelve holes integrate water into the course. The Par4 seventeenth tempts you to launch over the water and trees to shorten the hole. Success means a wedge into the green.
A long but fair golf course with no forced carries other than a Par3, Disney Magnolia is only five minutes from the resorts. Disney guests get free taxi vouchers. If you have time for one course, play Disney Magnolia.
If You Go:
Course Info - Walt Disney World Sports and Recreation runs three 18-hole championship golf courses - Magnolia, Palm, and Lake Buena Vista; two miniature golf courses and a Par3 course - Oak Trail. Courses are accessible to the public with discounts for Disney resort guests.
Location - Magnolia and Palm Courses share a clubhouse one mile from Disney World across from Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Lake Buena Vista is six miles south near Interstate Hwy 4. Disney World is 30 minutes west of Orlando’s airport.
Lodging - Stay at an official Disney Resort to get the green fee discount and free taxi vouchers.

• 1 teaspoon coriander seeds, ground
• 1 teaspoon cumin seeds, ground
• 1 ½ teaspoon sea salt, divided OR to taste
• ½ teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground, divided
• ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
• 2 pounds halibut fillet
• 1 loaf sourdough French bread OR 5 soft French rolls
In a small bowl, combine yogurt, tahini, coriander, cumin, 1 teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon black pepper. Set aside.
In another bowl mix olive oil with remaining ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon black pepper. Use half of the olive oil mixture to generously brush both sides of the halibut fillet. Save remaining half.
Place halibut on rimmed broiler pan, and broil each side for 2-3 minutes or until fish flakes (alternative, you may cook fish on stove top)
Cut French loaf lengthwise in half. Remove about ½-inch of bread from inside each half, leaving a rim around the outside. Drizzle remaining half of olive oil mixture inside each half and toast in preheated
375-degree F. oven for 3-4 minutes, remove from oven. Place broiled halibut, on bottom half of hollowed out bread and brush generously with yogurt-tahini mixture. Cover halibut with top half of bread and slice into sandwiches. Serve with your favorite vegetables. It’s nutritious and delicious.

Under Pressure: Sinus Pain Relief with Adjustments
By Dr. Max Lippman, Plaza Chiropractic & Massage Therapy
Jo: “Today we’re talking with Dr. Max Lippman, the top rated chiropractor in the Bay Area - working out of his Blackhawk office. Dr. Max, what’s one thing you’re seeing a lot these days?”
Dr. Lippman: “During this winter season, many patients come complaining of sinus pressure that won’t stop after battling a cold. Headaches, facial pain, ear pain, ringing, and dizziness are all symptoms of having pressure in the sinuses. They may have tried a decongestant or cold meds, but the constant pressure continues to torment them, whether at work, hanging with the family, or trying to get some sleep.”
Jo: “I had no idea chiropractic could help with sinus pressure. How does it work?”
Dr. Lippman: “The sinuses of the head drain into the throat, and when the tissues around the neck and throat get inflamed, those drainage passageways can get blocked, creating a backup. By getting the tissue to be less swollen through gentle massage and adjustments, the passages open up and everything begins to flow again. It’s a simple solution to a common problem.”
Jo: “Does it hurt to get adjusted? How long does it take to see relief?”
Dr. Lippman: “Adjustments typically do not hurt, and for many people, they
Lyric Coloratura Soprano Private Voice Teacher Adjudicator,Recording Artist
find the adjustments to feel good! Normally, after an adjustment and some lymphatic drainage, the patient will notice results immediately. Sometimes followup adjustments are needed depending on severity.”

Jo: “What can this sinus pressure lead to if untreated?”
Dr. Lippman: “While this condition often can improve without treatment, there are times that chronic sinus pressure can lead to infection, ear pain, or vertigo. These conditions can be confused with TMJ (jaw pain) as well. If someone is sick and the sinuses won’t clear up, it’s a good idea to be checked by a chiropractor.”
Jo: “How old do you have to be to see a chiropractor? I know a lot of kids are battling sinus pressure, ear infections, and headaches, too.”
Dr Lippman: “We see both pediatric and adult patients at our office, and tailor our adjustments to fit the needs of each patient, from one-year-olds to ninety-one-year-olds, we see great results, regardless of age.”
Jo: “Wow, that’s great to know. What’s the best way to get a hold of you?.”
Dr. Lippman: “You can give us a call or text us at 925-964-9189, visit our website at www.blackhawkchiropractor.com or find us on instagram @bayareahealth.”
Jo: “Thanks for the chat, Dr. Max. Is there anything you’d like to add before we take off?”
Dr. Lippman: “Just that we have both chiropractic and massage at our office. 4 out of the 6 therapists working here are currently or have worked with the 49ers in the past. I’ve been in practice since 2009. FSA or HSA funds for both massage and chiropractic are accepted here, and some insurances will cover chiropractic care. Our office specializes in neck pain, back pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, shoulder injuries, and auto accidents.”

Winter Junior Olympics 2022
Happy
New Year from the HOX Swim Team! 2023 is going to be another great season on the pool deck. While our fall program has come to an end, our High School Prep program is still in full swing getting our teens ready for their high school swim season. This is the day that our theme for the new season is revealed, and the swimmers can gather to try on suits, get new gear and reunite with long lost swim friends from last summer. This is also a great time for interested swimmers to come meet the coaches and see what the HOX family is all about.

Blackhawk Women’s Golf Association Updates
By Laurie Bruns
On November 17 the monthly winners of our Flight Days faced off on the Lakeside course. After 18 holes Lily Weng and Susan Cookson were tied for first place and played a sudden death match on 18 with a crowd of BWGA members watching from the upper deck of the ballroom. And the winner is....
Gross Flight – Susan Cookson 86
Net Flight – Jo Peek 76
Our 2022 Most Improved player is Gigi Dacosta.
And now a huge welcome to our new BWGA Captain Laura Carlson. In her own words...
“I’m Laura H Carlson, I’ll be serving as the 2023 BWGA Captain.
My husband and I joined BHCC in 2007. I immediately started golfing with him in the late afternoons. Seeing the women golfers out there inspired me to join the 3-hole group, which lead me to playing with the 9er’s, and then to playing with the BWGA.
I’m the mother of 4 adult children, and the Clinical Operations Director at a Surgery Center in the area. Some of my favorite things to do are golfing (of course), snow skiing, sewing and knitting.
My objective as Captain is to ensure that this organization continues to direct women’s golf activities at BHCC and encourage woman participation in the game of golf.
I truly enjoy the BWGA. I love the camaraderie with other players every Thursday, the different formats we play each week, and the many fun, special events the organization brings together. Another aspect of this group is the opportunity to participate in Team Play. We have teams that play in two different Leagues, Diablo Valley Team Play (DVTP) and East Bay Team Play (EBTP). These Leagues are flighted competitions with other Country Clubs in Northern California and include all handicaps up to 36.
Not only do we play golf together, but we also lunch together. The 19th hole is as much a part of golf as the previous 18.
I look forward to all the fun on the course that the BWGA has to offer in 2023. And I look forward to playing with you!
For the Love of the Game, Laura H Carlson
2023 Captain BWGA” Thank you to our outgoing board. Happy 2023!

The SGA — More than a Game
By Dr. Paul Zingg, President Emeritus, California State University-Chico, Resident since 2016
to the earliest years of the Blackhawk Country Club, the Senior Golf Association has become an exemplar of camaraderie and philanthropy that has reached well beyond the boundaries of the Club and the Blackhawk community.
Dating
With 240 current members, nearly onethird the golf equity membership of the Club, the SGA is an organization devoted to fellowship through both playing golf and supporting the growth of the game. As part of an association with over twenty other golf clubs in the Bay Area, the SGA maintains an active schedule of golf outings both visiting those other clubs and hosting them. In 2022, the SGA participated in 23 events at other clubs and hosted 6 home events. The latter attract 80-100 players each time to play either our Lakeside or Falls courses. This schedule is the most active of any of the clubs in our region, where, typically, a club may travel about a dozen times and host two or three events.
As attractive as the home and away schedule is, the heart of the SGA’s camaraderie is the twice weekly play that occurs throughout the entire year. Except for those rare
occasions when both courses are closed, SGA members are teeing it up on Mondays and Wednesdays to compete for bragging rights, earn a few dollars, and qualify for the bi-annual shootouts that cap each sixmonth season. In 2022, 82 SGA members played at least one weekly match and 79% of the participants were money winners. In addition to the home and away, weekly play, and shootout schedules, the SGA conducts four two-day tournaments, two overnight getaways, and a dinner dance each year.
Lots of golf. But more. For the sense of a partnership in a shared passion – golf –directly inspired the SGA’s commitment to its principal philanthropic beneficiary, Youth on Course.
This involvement began in 2015 when several SGA Board members met with the Executive Director of Youth on Course. Complementing the efforts of the First Tee program to introduce youth to golf, YOC aims to increase the accessibility and affordability of golf for young people (ages 6-18) through substantially reduced greens fees, caddying, golf-related internships, and college scholarships. The SGA embraced
Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses
the goal of golf-oriented philanthropy and focused on raising funds to support college scholarships. In 2020, the SGA’s first YOC scholarship recipient, Melody Hsu, graduated from Northwestern University. Overall, the SGA’s generosity has reached $30,000 a year and provides nearly 10% of YOC funding for college scholarships nationally.
But the story is even better than the money. With Melody setting the pace, and at a time when the national six-year graduation rate for American colleges and universities is 62%, every SGA-funded YOC scholarship recipient has either graduated or is currently enrolled and on course to do so.
The SGA welcomes prospective members to check out our story. And to appreciate, as we do, that golf is more than a game.
The SGA also wishes all Blackhawk members a wonderful holiday season and New Year.

The Lodge At Torrey Pines:
Celebrating 20 Years Of Luxury
By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990
Recently, we went to the iconic Lodge At Torrey Pines to celebrate a friend’s birthday at this 5-star Diamond Resort.
It is a special place located on the ocean and famous Torrey Pines Golf course that recently held the US Open in 2021 won by John Rahm. John Rahm and many other golfers like Rory McIlroy also stayed at The Lodge during the tournament. We were told that Rory loved the Sloppy Joes served on the lunch menu. We did too. The service staff prides itself on attention to detail, and The Lodge features great rooms, restaurants, pool and spa for the perfect retreat from the stress of modern-day life.
From the Oakland airport, it is a short direct flight to San Diego, known as “America’s Finest City.” It is a 30-minute ride from the
airport. You are welcomed at the front door by friendly gentlemen dressed in green kilts. The fresh smell of the ocean and wood burning fireplaces is very soothing.
We checked into our 600 square foot room with a balcony overlooking the ocean and famous 18th hole on the Torrey Pines South Course. We had a great lunch at the lodge grill and enjoyed the calamari and the famous Sloppy Joe sandwich. After lunch, we picked up some souvenirs at the nearby Torrey Pines Golf Shop. The following day, The Lodge arranged a tee time for us to play the South Course.
We all played very well. Hall-of-Famer MJ rode with us and was asked to sign a scorecard that was displayed with many other famous people in the starter shack on number one at the famous Torrey Pines South Course. My round was highlighted with a par on the signature par three hole overlooking the ocean and another par on the famous final 18th hole.
We concluded this fabulous golf trip with a sensational dinner at nearby ‘Jake’s On the Beach’ in Del Mar enjoying fresh ahi, ribs and a spectacular ocean view sunset. The famous Hula Pie dessert was a perfect ending to a great Torrey Pines experience.
We would highly recommend putting Torrey Pines on your golfing ‘bucket’ list.

Do you remember Datsun?
By David Tom, Resident Since 1990
My dream car growing up was a Z, and I remember being tantalized by a white Datsun 240Z. I loved its long hood and short rear end like Corvettes and Jaguars of the late 1960s. I never achieved my dream Z, but I relive fond memories when the Z Owners of Northern California come to town. On June 5, 2022, the Blackhawk Museum welcomed back the Z.O.N.C., one of the oldest “Z” car clubs in Northern California dedicated to the Datsun/Nissan enthusiast. The Z is the model most owned by Z.O.N.C. members, but members also have 510s, Fairlady roadsters and Nissan models such as the GT-R. Back to the original question, “do you remember Datsun?” Although the brand was phased out in 1986, I hope the answer is yes.
Tom: I have lived in Danville for 30 years. I retired from the corporate tax world and now pursue a variety of projects that interest me. I have always loved cars and look forward to sharing them with you.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue
Giving Them Another Chance
By Sue James, President Chicky
East County Animal Shelter looking for her forever home
Chicky is a beautiful adult German Shepherd mix at the East County animal shelter. We think she’s about 3-4 years old with beautiful teeth. She is a shy girl that has been making progress on building her confidence with her friends and supporters at the shelter. Each day, we see this sweet girl with soulful eyes continue to come out of her shell. She wants nothing more than pets and love. She does well walking on a leash and loves to stop and smell the plants and maybe some roses along the way.
Chicky is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated and ready to go to her new forever home with someone with love and patience. The person who adopts her will become Chicky’s person and will have a wonderful companion and pet. Chicky is located in Kennel A-3 at the East County Animal Shelter at 4595 Gleason Drive in Dublin.
Lola a TVAR foster kitten
Meet little Lola who was bottle-raised from when she was only 2 days old! She grew up with an older litter of kittens, 3 adult cats, and a puppy Jack Russel Terrier named Lucy. Lola and Lucy are the best of friends and absolutely love to play and cuddle together! Lola also loves to cuddle with her human mama and is very much attached to her hip when she’s home. Lola needs a home where she can sleep with her parents, and is allowed to cuddle up underneath the blanket at night. Lola is spayed and microchipped, current on vaccinations and has tested negative for FIV/FeLV.
TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.
All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens and the Public.

Support our Tassajara Hills Elementary School Foundation: Together We Soar
By Tassajara Hills Elementary Foundation, Nafissa Khoja, Sarah Thompson and Katherine Wenger
We are excited to announce that planning for our 2022-2023 Tassajara Hills Foundation Auction is under way.
When: Saturday, February 11, 2023 Where: Blackhawk Country Club
What will the Auction’s fundraised dollars go towards?
100% of the dollars raised at our Auction will directly fund programs and staff that enhance our children’s educational experience, helping to provide resources for our students that the State of California does not fund. Through the generous donations of our school community, we can continue to offer our awardwinning reading intervention program, six paraeducators to give extra support in every class and reduce teacher/student ratios, additional librarian hours to give more access to students, office staff support, an art instructional assistant and a vocal music instructor for our school! Without this support, we would not be able to offer these staff positions that boost our school’s reputation as a premium education for the Blackhawk community.
How can you help?
We are looking for generous businesses and individuals to donate a product or service to our wonderful school to help us reach our goals! Please contact us at THEFoundationAuction@gmail.com if you are interested.
• Does your family own a restaurant and want to donate a dining gift card?
• Know someone who has a vacation house (Napa, Tahoe, etc.) who would like to donate a night to us?
• Does your neighbor have a wine fridge full of wine they would like to donate?
• Does your cousin own a local boutique and would like to put together a gift package?
• Do you have access to seats for our one of favorite sports teams to offer as an auction item for a lucky family?
• Any extra frequent flyer miles or hotel points you want to donate? Send them our way!!

Clay Cat Yarn Holder
By Michelle Barry, Resident since 2018
This adorable Clay Cat Yarn Holder was featured in MollieMakes Instagram feed in December 2022. You can download the PDF here: https://media.immediate.co.uk/volatile/sites/32/2022/12/Day1-of-12-days-of-Christmas-350f5f7.pdf
The Clay Cat Yarn Holder is made from Crayola’s Air Dry Clay. I was lucky I had all of the supplies on hand minus the air dry clay. I purchased the air dry clay through Amazon.com. Here’s what you’ll need in addition to the clay:
■ Craft knife ■ Plate approx. 5½” in diameter ■ Tea towel ■ Two narrow wooden planks of equal length, approx. 3 /8” wide ■ old credit card ■ Paint brushes ■ Acrylic paint in pink, white and black ■ Varnish
It doesn’t need to be made into a yarn holder, you could create it to hold items you want to have a place to store. My daughter really liked it.
After using the air dry clay, I am inspired to create other items with it. The clay is easy to use. There was minimal mess, so I think it would be fun to create items with children. Some items I think would be fun to make with the air dry clay would be ornaments, name tags for gifts, pots for plants, trinket dish, drink coasters, vases, a child’s handprint. Here is a link to some more ideas: https:// www.gathered.how/arts-crafts/art/pottery/air-dry-clay-ideas/ Definitely a project for a rainy day.
Have fun crafting.

Ring in the New Year
By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry
Happy New Year from our family to yours! This is the perfect time to kick off the New Year by re-doing the ring you wear and enjoy daily. Resetting your diamond is a great way to get a whole new look. Whether you have a pear-shape, marquise or a classic round brilliant diamond, we at Padis Jewelry can show you the most current on-trend styles that you will be sure to love. As we re-brand our Walnut Creek location to a true Padis Jewelry store, we are thrilled to bring with us the Bay Area’s largest selection, and top designer brands such as Tacori and Verragio.
There are endless reasons as to why you would want to re-set your center diamond into a new mounting. Tired of your old setting, not happy with the quality of the ring, the ring was not a design you truly wanted, or you perhaps fell head over heels with a design you saw on Padis Jewelry’s instagram account? We’re here to help! When updating a ring or remounting your center diamond, there is always the question: well what can I do with my old mounting (setting)?! There are a number of different options, some naturally more cost-effective than others.
The first option is to keep it! Some of us like to plan ahead and think in terms of taking care of those we love, so keeping your old mounting to make a gift for a loved one, or helping your soon to be son-in-law marry your daughter, is one sentimental option. Or you can set a complimentary cubic zirconia in it and keep it as a travel ring for vacations.
The next option is to have it set with a colored gemstone. Sapphires, emeralds, and amethysts can turn your old mounting into a beautiful, colored-stone ring. This will allow you to keep your ring which may hold sentimental value and wear it as an alternative to your new engagement ring.
Remember, no matter the shape of your diamond, it can be remounted into a beautiful new setting. It can be difficult to let go of something with so much personal value attached to it, but Padis Jewelry can help guide you toward the best option for what to do with your piece, and make sure you are well educated in all the different options.
Still love your ring the way it is? That’s a great feeling! Stop by for a complimentary cleaning service. You’d be surprised at what it can do.
Whatever you choose, your rings should be always reflection of your love and spark memories of the moments shared throughout your life. Our team at Padis Jewelry is happy to assist you in any way. Our new Padis Jewelry location at Broadway Plaza is a great place to begin your “perfect ring” journey.
Don’t hesitate to visit us at our locations in Walnut Creek, Napa or San Francisco or shop with us 24/7 at www.padisjewelry.com. We wish you a very happy 2023!
