When it comes to Fourth of July Celebrations, there is no need to leave the gates to see the best fireworks in town and celebrate America’s independence in style. The Blackhawk Country Club’s annual Fireworks Extravaganza is one of my family’s favorite events in the community. We love seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces as they go on the carnival rides and visit with friends, but our favorite part is cuddling up on a blanket to watch the spectacular show in the sky after dark. Our community Independence Day Celebration is just one of the many ways to show your patriotism and celebrate America’s independence. Be sure to check out our community calendar for other Fourth of July activities. We are devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share please email me at mscott@bestversionmedia.com. Wishing your family a very happy Fourth of July Holiday! Warmly,

Meet the Barry Family: Music, Laughter and Dogs By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
In late 1994 and while living in Idaho Falls, ID, Gene attended a conference in the Bay Area that changed the course of his life, “It was the week of the NFC Championship game between the 49ers and the Cowboys and it was so incredible how much excitement, energy, and opportunities there were in the area. I remember looking out of the airplane window as it took off from SFO and thinking how much I loved being in the Bay Area. I decided then it was my new goal to find a job and move here one day.” One year later, Gene moved to the Bay Area and started a new job as a project engineer with Levine-Fricke in Emeryville. He lived in a studio apartment in SF just minutes to Chrissy Field, the Golden Gate Bridge, and all the restaurants and bars along Chestnut Street and Union Street. Michelle was living in Berkeley at the time. In 1999 once the couple were engaged, they moved to Dublin so that Michelle would have a shorter commute to the Silicon Valley and eventually bought and lived in several houses in San Ramon.
T
alking computers was how Gene and Michelle first met back in 1996, but it didn’t take long to realize they had much in common beyond IT. They both worked at an engineering firm in Emeryville where Michelle worked as a Computer Support Specialist and Gene was an Engineer. “I remember Michelle was really nice (and pretty) when she gave me training on the company’s computer network. During a work event, our common friends decided to introduce Michelle and me, while not talking about computers. We got along well, so I decided to ask her out,” says Gene. After a few years of dating, Gene says he decided to propose on a romantic San Francisco outing, “I planned it so we would take a walk along Chrissy Field and I would propose with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. After dinner, I suggested we take a walk. She had a long week and just wanted to chill, but I convinced her to go. We walked along the bay and I stopped and got down on one knee and proposed. She had no idea it was coming.” Michelle says it was Gene’s relationship with his family that sealed the deal. “Gene’s parents were in town to visit San Francisco, where Gene was living at the time. Our second date was playing tourist guide and showing them San Francisco. I felt comfortable with the whole family instantly, and we continue to be close. I am very lucky.” They had a small Catholic wedding at the Church of Santa Maria in Orinda. Gene was born and raised in Butte, Montana and was the middle child of two older brothers and a younger sister. As a mining city, Butte could be an eyesore to anyone who wasn’t born there, but the people of Butte are its greatest asset and have always been known for being friendly, hardworking, and willing to help a neighbor. Michelle was born in Concord, CA and grew up in Concord and Martinez. She is the youngest of five sisters and has a large family that led to big family gettogethers for holidays and special events throughout the years.
Gene and Michelle have two children, 20-year old Michael and 18-year old Bridget. Michael is a U.S. Marine and is stationed in Germany performing signals intelligence. Michael loves snowboarding, hiking, and paintball. “Michael has always been a history buff, especially the World War II era, and is an excellent marksman, so I think that led to his desire to join the military. At the end of Boot Camp, he was nominated by the other recruits and drill sergeants as ‘Most Improved Recruit’. We were really proud of him and I know it meant a lot to him,” says Michelle. Bridget recently graduated from Cal High School. She’s been accepted to three colleges and plans to pursue a degree and a career as a graphic design artist. Bridget is like her mom in that she has the artistic gene and has been drawing and writing stories since she was very young. She likes playing the guitar, listening to music, drawing, and snowboarding. Two rescue dogs complete the family: Astro and Peanut. Astro is a Tibetan Terrier mix who follows Michelle around everywhere. Peanut is a Havanese Terrier mix who is very sweet and loves to patrol the yard at night and hunt for anything that moves. Gene graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum Engineering from Montana Tech in Butte and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Physical Science and Physics from Montana State University. After graduation, Gene was offered a job as a staff engineer with a small start-up engineering firm in his hometown. After two years of working for the startup firm in Butte, Gene moved to Idaho Falls where he worked as a Project Engineer in support of the U.S. Department of Energy’s environmental cleanup at the Idaho Engineering National Laboratory (INEL). In 1995, Gene moved to the Bay Area to take a job as a project engineer with a Bay Area consulting firm, Levine-Fricke. Gene was assigned to work on the environmental cleanup of former Naval bases at Hunters Point Shipyard and Treasure Island. In 2001, Gene left Levine-Fricke to take a position as a partner and principal engineer with a start-up company called 4LEAF, Inc. 4LEAF has grown to 250 staff and seven offices nationwide and provides construction management, public works inspections, building department services, plan review, and planning services to cities, counties, states, and federal clients. Gene earned his California Professional Civil Engineer’s License in January 2003.

JULY 2021
Gene’s main hobbies are golfing, snow skiing, water skiing, bocce, walking the dogs, listening to music, trying different beers and wines, enjoying new restaurants, and doing projects around the house. He closely follows the 49ers, Giants, Warriors, Sharks, and Cal Bears football. “Gene is not the kind of person who can go on vacation and sit in the sun on a beach and read a book. He’d rather be doing something active,” adds Michelle.
Michelle was attending San Francisco State University when she was offered a job at C-Cube Microsystems in Milpitas. She worked her way up in the company and became a senior network administrator. She was responsible for implementing new network services in C-Cube’s offices around the world and fell in love with her job. After the birth of her first child, she decided to be a stay-at-home mom. Michelle stayed at home until Bridget started second grade when she decided to go back to work part time with San Ramon Valley Unified School District as a computer systems assistant. Michelle currently works for The Coder School in San Ramon which teaches computer coding to children. She loves working with children. Michelle has endless hobbies. She loves to sew, quilt, crochet, embroider, paint, and is trying new things all of the time. Michelle writes about her creations in the Blackhawk Living Magazine Craft article each month.
The family joined the Blackhawk Country Club in June 2006 and enjoyed all the fun that came with the membership, “We loved the area and it exposed us to all the events the club had to offer. In 2014, we started playing Bocce and playing more golf,” says Michelle. Gene says “we were making more and more friends in Blackhawk and spending a lot of our social time at the Club. I thought it would be more convenient to live inside the gates and within a few days, our real estate agent, Floria Hakimi, got us an appointment to see a listing on Fox Creek Drive before it had its open house. It was so peaceful, we made an offer the next morning.” Tragically, the Barry’s real estate agent, Floria, was killed two days later in a plane crash. “We had known Floria as our agent and a friend for 20 years, and we were just devastated. After a lot of mourning, we decided that Floria would want us to move forward with purchasing the house. We ultimately closed on the house and moved into Blackhawk in early November 2018. We love living in Blackhawk because of the abundance of wildlife, the beautiful landscaping, rolling hills, great golf courses, the Fitness Center, and the sense of community we share with other Blackhawk residents. We really love living on Fox Creek Drive and our neighbors are awesome. It is the neighborhood of our dreams and we can’t speak highly enough of our neighbors,” says Gene.

Pet Adoption Corner
Bobby
ARF Adoption Stars
Trumpet
By Cole Kuiper Looking for a furry friend during this trying time? Good news — ARF is now offering a no-contact virtual adoption process! If you see an animal you’re interested in on our website, just fill out an online inquiry form. Once your inquiry has been received, you will be added to our virtual adoption queue.
Ten-year-old Bobby is a sweet, mellow old man. He enjoys spending his time relaxing outside and getting lots of pets from his favorite people. He gets along well with other calm dogs but mostly likes to roam around. Bobby would do well in a quiet home where his easygoing demeanor will fit in perfectly. Bobby has some special medical needs that will require ongoing care, including a prescription urinary diet and regular monitoring with help from your veterinarian. Bobby has a positive history with other dogs, currently weighs 42 pounds, and his adoption fee has been prepaid by a generous donor.
Meet your forever friend at Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, 2890 Mitchell Drive, Walnut Creek, during adoption hours: Noon to 6 pm Wednesday & Thursday, Noon to 7 pm Friday, and Noon to 6 pm Saturday & Sunday. Would you like to be part of the heroic team that saves the lives of rescued dogs and cats? Can you share your talents to connect people and animals? ARF volunteers are making a difference! For more information see our website, www.arflife.org, or call (925) 256-1ARF.
The adoption fee for puppies (<6 months) is $350, for adult dogs is $250, and senior dogs (7+ years) and special needs dogs are 50% off the adoption fee.
Eleven-week-old Trumpet is ready to find a loving home! She is positive for FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus), and shouldn’t live with any other non FeLV+ cats (FeLV is only contagious to cats; it is not contagious to humans, dogs, or other non-cat animals). Trumpet must always remain an indoor kitty, and needs to be fed a nutritionally complete and balanced diet. Her adoption fee has been prepaid by a generous donor. The adoption fee for kittens (<6 months) is $150, for adult cats is $100, $25 off each for multiple cats/kittens, and senior cats (7+ years) and special needs cats are 50% off the adoption fee.

Crafts Corner
Easy Craft for July By Michelle Barry, Resident since 2018
T
his month I worked with a new product in the ModPodge line of products called Fabric ModPodge. Fabric ModPodge is used to strengthen fabric and keep it from fraying when you cut into it. It is also used to adhere fabric to clothing, hats, canvas shoes, bags, etc. It is washable, water resistant and durable. I used Fabric ModPodge to embellish the jeans below. It was easy to use and it didn’t change the feel of the fabric. The fabric patches are attached in a “no sew” method. You could add embroidery stitches to embellish it further. I used the fabric “Flea Market Moxie” created by Cathe Holden in these photos. For more ideas on how to use Fabric ModPodge, just do a search for “Fabric ModPodge ideas” on YouTube. You can also follow the hashtag #fabricmodpodge on Instagram to see creations by other crafters. If you have an Instagram account, please post your projects using the hashtag #bhlmcrafts Happy crafting!

he Blackhawk Museum continues its tradition of bringing fabulous cars to the area. On June 6, 2021, the Valt Auto Club enthralled the community with a dazzling display of vehicles. This show was part of the series “Car Shows at Blackhawk Museum.” The beautiful summer day was made more special as hundreds of people excitedly viewed the cars while owners were equally excited to display their prized wheels.

Danville’s Locally Owned Brewery:
Danville Brewing Co. By Megan Scott, Resident Since 2010
W
e chose a visit to Danville Brewing Co. to celebrate the last day of school and official start of summer break. The restaurant manager, Max Brown, gave us a fun tour of the brewery so we could see where all the magic happens. He also told us all about the head brewer, Matt Sager. He is a UC Davis Master Brewers program graduate and has been an award winning brewer for 20 years. Danville Brewing Co. is locally owned and operated and is a gem we are lucky to have in our community. There is something on the menu and drink list to please all palates. Great wine and a full bar complement the beer selections. Our favorite was the pretzel bites; they were a hit! We also indulged in the chocolate chip cookie topped with ice cream. It was definitely a cheat day! Thank you to Max and the hard-working team at Danville Brewing Co. for making the start of summer vacation so special!

Fruit Platters By Parisa Z. Ambwani, Resident since 1983
Have locally grown and seasonally fresh fruits for better taste and strength. Serves 12-16
Platter with Watermelon and Kiwi: • • • •
1 seedless watermelon (with thin skin and inside color red), cut in half 1 cantaloupe OR melon, remove skin and cut a round slice 4 kiwis skinned and sliced into ½-inch rounds. ½ pound raspberries
Cut two slices (1/2-inch round) from middle part of watermelon and place on platter on top of each other. Place cantaloupe round over watermelon rounds and cut all three slices (2 of watermelon and 1 of melon) into 8 pie shaped pieces for easy serving.
Arrange kiwi slices around watermelon on platter. Use raspberries as decoration on each slice of kiwi.
Platter with Bananas and Strawberries: • • •
1 ½ pound strawberries 4 bananas, peeled 1 pineapple (use only ½), skinned, cored, and cut flesh into bite-size pieces • ½ pound raspberries Decorate outer edge of opposite sides of fruits platters with strawberries (from which stems have been removed and place stem side down).

JULY 2021
Just prior to serving arrange bananas on platter inside of the strawberries. While bananas are on platter, cut whole bananas, at an angle, into 1-inch pieces. This must be done the last minute to prevent bananas from discoloring. Arrange pineapples pieces inside of the bananas. Place a small crystal bowl in the center of the pineapple pieces and fill with raspberries and decorate with culinary rose petals (use your imagination to decorate). Serve with toothpicks. Holistic Journey: Everlasting happiness arrives like the light of summer, and it is woven from the threads of internal peace.

Hazy Barbecue By Megan Scott, Resident Since 2010
W
e love supporting local businesses and are thrilled to share Hazy Barbecue in Downtown Danville with our readers.
Sean and Brendan Harrigan, the “Hazy Brothers,” were raised here in Danville and now each reside mere minutes from downtown Danville with their young families. Sean and Brendan have always shared passions for barbecue and beer; in 2018 they brought that passion to life when they committed to bringing Hazy Barbecue to their hometown. The Hazy Brothers and their team can’t wait to create lasting memories for all who cross the Hazy threshold. Come in for a taste of barbecue and sip of beer- it’ll make you feel right at home. Hazy’s values are perfecting authentic smoked barbecue and creating a fun, dependable customer experience! From the minute you order and enjoy your food you feel those values shine through. Although meat is their specialty, they also offer many options for non-meat eaters like smoked jackfruit and grilled veggies and salads. We loved the spicy margarita, and the ambience on the patio with live music makes for a perfect night out. Danville is lucky to have the Hazy Brothers as natives who share their culinary gifts with the community.

High School Sports Update By Ricky Helton, Resident Since 2004
T
hinking over this past year of local Danville High School Sports, I can’t say enough for all those who fought to make it happen for these kids to have their athletic moments -even with the shortened season. The faces of these young competitors say it all. As my daughter would say, “That’s their jam.” My pictures captured the Monte Vista Mustang Sweep of the SRVHS Wolves in baseball and a little Waterpolo between Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley. I want to congratulate all the graduates on their hard work. We wish you the very best on your next adventure.

appy days are indeed here again! The Corona clouds have parted and we are ready to cartwheel back into life. Not only can you now consume more alcohol by mouth than on your hands, you are actually free to make real plans that don’t include words with Zoom or FaceTime in them.
Celebrating a month of winning
Just within this last month, the Blackhawk Women’s Golf Association have enjoyed a buffet of fabulous events. olf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shotsbut you have to play the ball.” (unknown) Well this week we played our 2nd Team Play tournament at Rossmoor Golf Club in Walnut Creek. We were currently tied for 1st place after playing at Roundhill in April! But as the quote says you get bad breaks from good shots etc., but you have to play the ball. We played the ball with good and bad shots but fell to 3rd place. The good news is we have three more Team Play days to come back and hopefully reclaim our 1st place spot. In spite of our loss, we had a great time playing at Rossmoor. Great course and wonderful, welcoming organizers.

e recently made the three-hour drive to Paso Robles to experience the Field of Lights art installation called Sensorio by internationally acclaimed artist Bruce Munro. Field of Lights is a 15-acre walk-through experience, made up of more than 58,800 stemmed spheres lit by fiber optics, gently illuminating the landscape. We arrived at 7pm and stayed well past sunset. It was beautiful to watch the lights and the landscape change as the sun set and the night sky allowed the light display to really shine.

Message from the Blackhawk Police Chief By Tricia England, Blackhawk Police Chief PHONE, MAIL & COMPUTER SCAMS ~ HOW NOT TO BE A VICTIM
P
eople lose a lot of money to phone and mail scams — sometimes their life savings. Scammers have figured out countless ways to cheat you out of your money over the phone or by mail. In some scams, they act friendly and helpful. In others, they might threaten or try to scare you. One thing you can count on is that phone and mail scammers will try to get your money or your personal information to commit theft. Don’t give it to them. These scams come in many forms, but they tend to make similar promises and threats, or ask you to pay certain ways. Here’s how to recognize a scam. There’s never a good reason to send cash or pay with a gift card. Scammers will often ask you to pay in a way that makes it hard for you to get your money back — by wiring money, putting money on a gift card, prepaid card or cash reload card, or using a money transfer app. Anyone who asks you to pay that way is a scammer. Don’t trust your caller ID. Scammers can make any name or number show up on your caller ID. That’s called spoofing. So even if it looks like it’s a government agency like the Social Security Administration calling, or like the call is from a local number, it could be a scammer calling from anywhere in the world. Don’t give anyone you don’t know remote access to your computer. If you gave a scammer remote access to your computer, update your computer’s security software. Then run a scan and delete anything it identifies as a problem. Don’t give anyone your passwords or your sensitive information. It’s never a good idea to give out sensitive information like your Social Security number to someone who calls you unexpectedly, even if they say they’re with the Social Security Administration or IRS.
incomplete or inaccurate, the financial institution will restrict or close their accounts. What you should do: • Don’t ignore little things that seem odd, like a return envelope that required postage and wasn’t self-addressed. • First call your bank using the phone numbers on their website or listed on the back of your bank cards. Do not call the number listed on the letter itself. Never reveal personal information before verifying that the letter sent was or wasn’t fraudulent. • Always question any letter requests that demand personal information ASAP, threaten to close accounts or emphasize how time sensitive this “important matter” is. So, the take-away is: • There’s never a good reason to pay with a gift card or send cash • Don’t Trust your caller ID • Don’t give anyone you don’t know remote access to your computer • Don’t give anyone your passwords or sensitive information • You won’t be arrested • Response-Required bank Notification Letters, don’t call the number listed on the letter.

You won’t be arrested. Scammers might pretend to be law enforcement or a federal agency. They might say you’ll be arrested, fined, or deported if you don’t pay taxes or some other debt right away. The goal is to scare you into paying. But real law enforcement and federal agencies won’t call and threaten you. Response-Required Bank Notification Letter. Scammers send a letter urgently alerting the recipient that unless they provide personal information (like a date of birth) that’s missing, 32

Sell my Home! By Tiffany Stock, Real Estate Broker, Keller Williams
What to look for when interviewing a Real Estate agent Experience – As the saying goes, “experience is everything.” Experience is the education only learned being in the field. It’s like a doctorate - coming from years of doing something at a highest level with exceptional quality. Ask the agent about their experience, education, and training. Marketing – Ask about their marketing. Not all marketing is done well or effectively. Make them be specific and have them show you examples of their marketing. The world of real estate shopping is shifting to a customer centric approach. Yet some agents are still using the same traditional methods they have used for years, missing the mark on current buyers. Marketing has significantly changed since even 5 years ago. Your agent should know how to keep you in front of buyers. Skills – Negotiating is one of the most critical things your agent must do really well. Remember it’s your agent that will be negotiating with offers, not you, no matter how good you are at it. Another highly valued skill is knowing real estate contract law as well as an attorney.
Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses
Value – When an agent suggests those extra “bells and whistles,” it’s important to understand how much that will actually cost you! What is included in their fee? Not all agents net you out the same. Shop around. Reputation – Choose an agent who has a good reputation with their peers and in the community. They don’t need to yell, use profanity, or be a bully if they have real skills. Availability and Accessible – Do you want your agent to answer when you call? A common frustration I hear from clients of large teams is that they need to repeat themselves every time they meet with a new member of that team. They complain that they never saw their agent again after the first meeting. Can they give you the time you need or are they passing you off to someone else? If you’re looking to hire a professional give me a call. Tiffany Stock (925)989-2138 DRE# 01466776 Keller Williams

We May Not Have a 4th of July Parade this year, but Mark Your Calendar for
Labor Day Weekend Parade By Nicola Shihab, Danville Public Information Officer
T
he September date allows additional time for event planning and increased vaccinations.
As life continues to move back towards normalcy, the Town continues to work with community partners to find creative ways to keep the Danville spirit alive. While prioritizing the need to maintain community safety, event planning continues to adjust accordingly. After discussions between the Town of Danville and the Kiwanis Club of the San Ramon Valley, we are excited to announce plans for a Labor Day Weekend Parade on Saturday, September 4, 2021, in downtown Danville. The event is being planned within State and County safety guidelines. Always a popular summer event, the Kiwanis-Danville 4th of July Parade was recently canceled for 2021. This mutual decision by the event organizer, the Kiwanis Club of the San Ramon Valley and the Town, was driven by uncertainty regarding how
or whether the State would be permitting large-scale outdoor events. The Kiwanis Club manages logistics and volunteers for the parade while the Town financially supports the event and provides resources and staffing. An event of this magnitude, which routinely draws around 40,000 spectators from around the Bay Area, requires months of planning and logistics including multi-jurisdictional police support, fire and emergency medical services, road closures and traffic management, as well as additional garbage receptacles, street sweepers, signage, and portable restrooms. In addition, the event organizers need to secure sponsors and enlist parade entries. With the proximity of the State’s June 15 reopening date to July 4th, a determination was made in early May, that there wasn’t enough time to safely plan a large-scale event for July 4th this year.
34
JULY 2021
Town staff continues to work with event organizers to monitor what activities are safe and realistic to implement and are hopeful that more events will return as the county continues to move forward. A number of other event organizers for community events have elected to cancel their events this year including the Memorial Day Ceremony, Danville Summerfest, Hot Summer Sundays Car Shows, and Danville d’Elegance Car Show. As we continue to move forward, the latest information on all Town events can be found on the Town’s website calendar at www.danville.ca.gov/calendar. For additional information, contact Lianna Adauto at (925) 3143309 or ladauto@danville.ca.gov. However, discussions between the Town and the Kiwanis Club continued, and, following the release of additional guidance by the California Department of Public Health on May 21, 2021, the decision was made to hold a Labor Day Parade in Danville in September 2021. The late summer date for this parade allows more time for the additional planning required to stage such a large event and increases the opportunity for more families to get vaccinated. “We sincerely value our partnership with the Kiwanis and applaud their flexibility and energy in adapting to the current challenges of planning large events”, said Mayor Renee Morgan. She added, “The Town and the Kiwanis are working together to organize a safe event and we are thrilled that Danville will be able to have a parade this year for our community. We urge everyone to get vaccinated so that this event can be a safe and fun occasion and we look forward to the 4th of July parade returning next year.” Kiwanian, Rob Goldstein said “We are absolutely excited to celebrate July 4th on September 4th, what’s a few months to ensure the safety of our community? We all deserve to have the best and biggest parade in the Bay Area in celebration of the reopening of our state and Kiwanis in partnership with the Town of Danville is excited to deliver the event. We can make this year’s Labor Day parade a LABOR of love for our great Town”. He added, “Kiwanis of the San Ramon Valley looks forward to the July 4, 2022 parade”.

Want to attend our event? It’s open to the entire Blackhawk community and beyond—you do not need to be a current Tassajara Hills family to enjoy this night out for a good cause! Tickets can be purchased here: https://www. thefoundationauction.com/attend
What will the Auction’s fundraised dollars go towards? 100% of the dollars raised at our Auction will go directly to the Tassajara Hills Foundation (school education fund). Our Foundation funds positions that the State of California does not fund. Through the generous donations of our school community, next year we will be able to continue to offer our award-winning reading intervention program with three reading instructional assistants, six paraeducators to give extra support in every class and reduce teacher/student ratios, additional librarian hours to give more access to students, and a new art instructor for our school! Without raising funds, we would not be able to offer these staff positions that boost our school’s reputation as a premium education for Blackhawk residents. Every dollar stays at our school and goes directly towards enhancing the Tassajara Hills education, allowing us to continue keeping Blackhawk the esteemed community that makes us all proud residents. To contact the Auction committee, please reach out to THEFoundationAuction@gmail.com. Thank you again for the true community support- let’s make this an Auction to remember!

Sensational Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990 | Photo by MJ McColgan
W
e recently had the pleasure to travel to Sonoma and stay at the fabulous Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. From our home in Danville, it is an easy 1-hour picturesque drive. Upon arrival at the Fairmont Sonoma, guests are welcomed with a glass of perfectly chilled Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut from their champagne cart that is proudly displayed out front. It is a great way to begin a magical stay at this elegant Sonoma oasis. The iconic hotel is within a 10-minute drive of Sonoma Plaza and Mission San Francisco Solano, 3.5 miles from Sonoma Train Town Railroad and 11.1 miles from Domaine Carneros. The world seems far away, which is the whole idea of this laidback yet elegant resort. The resort’s 226 rooms are nestled in the trees and have private outdoor areas that provide for the ultimate in relaxation. The décor is Spanish Mission inspired style with dark wood, stone floors and warming fireplaces scattered around the property and in the rooms. The grounds include a pool with cabanas and a bar. The full-service
spa has several different treatment selections including massages, facials and its own source of thermal mineral water. Complimentary wine tasting is featured at 4:30 in the lobby from various local wineries each day. Food and drink feature prominently at the Restaurant Sante where we experienced an upscale dinner prepared for us by Chef Jared Reeves. Scallops, Blackened Cod and a wonderful dessert selection provided for a perfect end to our day. The next day we played the Sonoma Golf Club winding through this sensational property. It was in pristine condition and had a variety of tees to challenge all golfing skills. The course was designed in 1928 by Sam Whiting, architect of San Francisco’s prestigious Olympic Club Lake Course. The Sonoma Golf Club was the former home of the PGA Champions Tour Charles Schwab Cup Championship. The golf experience is set on 177 acres of rolling terrain highlighted by massive oaks, lakes and sweeping vistas, and neighboring vineyards. Golf at Sonoma Golf Club is reserved exclusively for Sonoma Golf Club Members and guests of the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. For dinner, we enjoyed great food and superior service at the highly acclaimed Girl and the Fig in downtown Sonoma. We were not disappointed and enjoyed watching many ‘happy’ people strolling around the Sonoma square without masks. In conclusion, the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is a great place to enjoy a long weekend and break from the stress and rigors of daily life. The service staff, accommodations, world class spa and restaurants are all first class. The staff is very friendly and makes guests feel very special. It is definitely a ‘must do’ to add to your bucket list. The best part is that it is a short drive from our community in Danville. What’s “Brotox” and Why Is It So Popular? By Dr. Stephen J Ronan, MD FACS
T
he secret is out. Men are putting their best face forward more than ever before, and there’s no shame admitting it. Many men, like most women, want to look and feel their very best – for their own self-confidence and to project a more professional, polished look both in person… and increasingly on FaceTime, Webex, and Zoom! And that’s a primary reason why many cosmetic procedures have exploded in popularity among males over the last few years. These procedures include hair restoration, rhinoplasty, laser treatments, dermal fillers, and neurotoxin injections such as Dysport and Botox to treat facial wrinkles and creases. Over the years, these ‘tox’ injections have taken on the fun nickname “brotox” when administered to males. And according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of men seeking “brotox” treatments has risen by a whopping 350 percent in the last 15 years.
Botox and Dysport are simple proteins that are injected into a muscle creating weakness. Muscle action is what causes the wrinkles of frown lines, forehead furrow and smile lines. Look in the mirror and make these expressions to see the muscles at work. By precisely…and temporarily weakening these muscles, we can soften the expression and reduce or eliminate many wrinkles. During the 2-minute procedure, Dysport injections are carefully administered to target areas. The treatment is quick, easy and requires little to no downtime. Most patients will notice results within two to five days following their treatment, and these results typically last anywhere from 3 to 4 months. Because the procedure is relatively quick and easy, many men (and women!) find that regular appointments spaced several months apart is an easy way to fit regular treatments into their busy schedules. Our practice also offers a Membership plan which provides a very convenient and affordable way to establish a regular regimen for many of our cosmetic treatments including Dysport, dermal injections, laser skin treatments and incredibly soothing and refreshing HydraFacials. For more information on “Brotox” or any other one of our treatment options, please stop by or contact us at (925) 736-5757. One of our medical practitioners or patient coordinators will be happy to discuss your unique needs and goals… and to design a custom-tailored treatment plan to help you achieve the youthful, energized look you want.

Push Present Gift Ideas for the New Parent & Grandparents! By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry and The Forevermark Boutique at Broadway Plaza
M
y wife, Judy and I welcomed our fourth grandchild, Jackson Padis, into the world last month and of course, new parents and babies have certainly been on the brain. When our youngest son, Stevie, approached us for push-present ideas to gift to his wife, Kelli, we of course had lots of ideas! What is a push present you ask? Simply put, it is a gift given as a token of celebration over the birth of a baby. The gift is just for the new mom. It is something that makes her feel special and appreciated after just going through one of the most challenging and most rewarding tasks in life. A push gift puts the focus back on the new mom. She deserves something special that makes her feel cherished. Jewelry offers a tangible reminder of the first few moments with her new child — and of your thoughtfulness — that she can wear every day. The new parent or the new grandparents can choose to present a push gift after the birth of the new addition to the family. No matter who gives the push gift, the goal is to make the new mom feel loved and appreciated.
Birthstone and Personalized Jewelry
Personalized jewelry offers a tailored touch to the push gift concept. It commemorates the birth month of the newest member of the family. Each time the new mom looks at the birthstone jewelry, she remembers the time when she became a mom. Birthstone options come in all categories of jewelry, including earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Personalized jewelry also starts a tradition for future babies. Add to her collection of push present jewelry to represent all of her children. Like a birthstone, an initial or name on a piece of jewelry adds a personalized touch that represents the new family member. If you already know the baby’s name, you can easily purchase a piece of jewelry with the first initial before the birth. If you want to symbolize the changing composition of your family, incorporate the initials of the parents.
Sparkling Diamond Earrings
Earrings work well as a push present because they are something the new mom can wear every day. Diamond solitaire earrings offer a classic, versatile option, but push present earrings can be any style or shape. The earrings don’t need a special connection to the birth itself. Simply receiving the earrings on the day her child is born is enough to make them special. Each time she slips them into her ears, she’ll fondly remember your love and the birth of her child.
good together. We at Padis can provide suggestions for bands that will work well. Each time she gazes at her hand, she’ll not only remember her love for you but also the growing love your family has, thanks to the birth of your new baby.
A New Timepiece
Cell phones may be the go-to way to tell time, but an elegant designer watch is still a relevant and useful accessory in a new mom’s life. Not only will a new watch keep her on time for those pediatrician appointments and play dates, it also decorates her wrist with a sophisticated style. Choose a watch that fits her style and the way she might use it. Luminescent hands and easy-to-read numbers make the watch visible even in a dark nursery or under sleep-deprived conditions. Whatever your role in the expectant mother’s life, make her baby’s birth special with a push gift. A thoughtful jewelry gift gives her a keepsake she’ll always cherish that reminds her of you and of the day that changed her life forever. Now that you know what a push present is, you’re ready to pick out the perfect gift! Head on over to any Padis Jewelry location and our consultants will be happy to help you pick out the perfect push present. We treasure the generations of families who allow us to become a part of their most precious moments. Please feel to reach out if we can answer any questions and if we can be of assistance at concierge@padisjewelry.com.
An Additional Band to Complement Her Wedding Ring
The wedding ring she wears every day represents your love and takes her back to your wedding day. It is a very important symbol to show your strength and commitment to one another. The birth of a child is just as monumental as getting married. With a new baby in the picture, that love you share continues to grow. Why not add another ring to her finger to represent that new family dynamic? Choose a band that fits beside her wedding ring, paying close attention to the style of the original band to ensure they look 42
