When it comes to Fourth of July Celebrations, there is no need to leave the gates to celebrate America’s independence in style. The Blackhawk Country Club’s annual Fourth of July Extravaganza is one of my family’s favorite events in the community. We love seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces as they go on the carnival rides and visit with friends, but our favorite part is cuddling up on a blanket to watch the spectacular show in the sky after dark. Our community Independence Day Celebration is just one of the many ways to show your patriotism and celebrate America’s independence. Be sure to check out our community calendar for other Fourth of July activities. We are devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share, please email me at mscott@bestversionmedia.com. Wishing your family a very happy Fourth of July Holiday! Warmly,
Megan Scott Resident since 2010 We are devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share please email me at mscott@bestversionmedia.com.

Since he was a young child, Dr. Ronan always knew medicine was his calling. He attended UC Davis and earning a BS in Physiology, he went on to attend medical school at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University. After earning his MD, he did is internship, fellowship and residency at the Medical College of Virginia and continued as the Chief Surgical House Officer at Columbia Hospitals for several years. Once he returned home to the Bay Area and became Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Ronan opened Blackhawk Plastic Surgery in 2002, and this year he is celebrating 20 years of helping people look and feel their best.

B
orn and raised in Northern California, Dr. Ronan grew up in the farm country of Petaluma. “I had pigs, sheep and cows to take care of growing up. My nearest neighbors ran a dairy and a Christmas tree farm. The hard work and modest upbringing of my youth contributed to my traditional values as an adult. I’ve had a job and have been working hard since 5th grade,” says Dr. Ronan. The Ronan family has called Blackhawk home for about 20 years. Dr. Ronan says it was a combination of factors that led him to chose Blackhawk, “I ended up in Blackhawk when I started my plastic surgery practice, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery, 20 years ago. I chose Blackhawk because I thought it would be a great place to live, raise kids and support a plastic surgery practice. All of those things turned out to be true. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to live and work.”
Blackhawk Plastic Surgery and Blackhawk Surgery Center are in the top 1% of national plastic surgery practices. “I have been very fortunate in my career to do something I love in the community I live in. Along with my surgery practice, I am the Medical Director for Cutera, a public aesthetic laser and technology company, where I oversee the clinical trial and research studies, assist with R&D and commercialization of products. The trials typically involve testing laser, radio-frequency or other energies for aesthetic treatments. We recently got FDA approval of a laser that will cure or significantly improve acne, which I am excited about. I’ve also had the opportunity to travel multiple times with the non-profit organization, Operation Kids, to Guatemala where I volunteered my time on a relief mission, operating on children with cleft lips/palates, burns, congenital anomalies and other birth defects. Those trips and the look on the kids’ and their families’ faces after we operated are highlights of my career I will never forget,” says Dr. Ronan. Over the years, numerous companies and organizations have invited Dr. Ronan to participate as a strategic advisor, investor or board member. “I currently work with several large and small companies, assisting in both funding and the commercialization of products. The types of companies I work with are diverse, from aesthetic companies to textiles, tech and finance. It’s been highly rewarding to help these creative entrepreneurs bring beneficial products to the marketplace. I look forward to doing more of this,” says Dr. Ronan.

JULY 2022
Along with medicine, flying has been a life-long passion for Dr. Ronan. A seasoned pilot with numerous ratings and endorsements, he says there is nothing like the feeling you get while flying, “My irresistible attraction to flying started from a young age, and I always knew once I accomplished my career goals for my medical practice, I would pursue my pilot license. For me, aviation isn’t just a way to get from one place to another. It’s a way to experience nature from above, connect with family and friends, and find peace. My next goal is to become a turbine instructor, as part of my retirement activities, someday.” Two of his most common places to fly are Lake Tahoe and Palm Desert, as the family keeps homes there. “Our family spends a great deal of time on Lake Tahoe during the summer and down in Palm Desert during the winter. Of course, we fly to both, which makes it easy to visit often.” Other popular destinations include Sedona, Bend, Jackson Hole, and Southern California. An avid wine enthusiast, Dr. Ronan has his own wine label and works with a long-time friend and renown winemaker to create an annual release of Cabernet blends from Napa. He also grows grapes on his Blackhawk property. In the past, he has donated his wine to help
fundraise for The Ronan Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to raise significant funds for Bay Area youth development programs in order to provide opportunities for Bay Area youth to play sports in a safe and educational environment. Dr. Ronan’s children are both in college now. The oldest, Jack, is 22 years old and is a senior at UC Berkeley with a double major in Computer Science and Business. He is the captain of the UC Berkeley Lacrosse team and made All-American for lacrosse this year. He’s lined up a job after graduation in private equity. Dr. Ronan’s daughter, Charlotte, is 20 years old and currently attends college in Georgia, where she made the President’s List. She works as a nanny part-time and has a serious boyfriend who recently got dad’s approval. A one-year-old English Goldendoodle named Tahoe completes the household. “He’s one of the sweetest dogs with a wonderful disposition. He is like a rock star wherever he goes, drawing tons of attention. All he wants in life is to be pet and is very gentle,” says Dr. Ronan. After moving into his Pheasant Run Estates home in 2008, Dr. Ronan says he began a total overhaul of the property. “I have just about completed my bucket list of renovations to the house. The interior is complete and the massive outdoor build of a nearly 2000 sq ft pavilion has been finished. Now, the exterior is getting a re-do that should be completed by summer. When I first saw the house, I loved the privacy and the beautiful views. Being next to Mt. Diablo never gets old. I enjoy walking in my neighborhood and taking in the beauty. As a golf player, I, of course, enjoy the beautiful amenities The Blackhawk Country Club has to offer. I feel very fortunate to call Blackhawk home.”

Koda
By Christa Noriega, ARF Adoption Manager
Lantern
Looking for a furry friend during this trying time? If you see an animal you’re interested in on our website, just fill out an online inquiry form. Once your inquiry has been received, you will be added to our virtual adoption queue.
One-and-a-half-year-old Koda is a dog you might find in the dictionary definition for ‘zen’. This young boy knows how to just kick back and enjoy life, and truly loves being with his people. He’ll take all the love and cuddles he can get, and wouldn’t mind if you let him crawl into your lap. While he’s ready for play and adventure, too, at the end of the day Koda is a polite, mellow boy who wants to kick his feet up and bask in your presence. Koda has an auto-immune disease called immune mediated thrombocytopenia. ARF will provide the first 6 months of medication and recheck bloodwork while tapering off medications at no cost. Koda has a positive history with other dogs and currently weighs 52 pounds.
Meet your forever friend at Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, 2890 Mitchell Drive, Walnut Creek, during adoption hours: Noon to 6 pm Wednesday & Thursday, Noon to 7 pm Friday, and Noon to 6 pm Saturday & Sunday. Would you like to be part of the heroic team that saves the lives of rescued dogs and cats? Can you share your talents to connect people and animals? ARF volunteers are making a difference! For more information see our website, www.arflife.org, or call (925) 256-1ARF.
ARF adoption fees: $250 for an adult dog, $350 for a puppy (<6months), $125 for a special- needs dog, $175 for a special-needs puppy (<6months), and $125 for a senior dog (7+ years).
Ten-month-old Lantern is a sweet and gentle fellow, who’s putting his best paw forward! He may be shy at first, but once he comes out of his shell, you’ll discover that he has lots of love to share. You may even win his heart with a tasty treat! Lantern has a positive history with other cats and would love to go home with his brother, Tiger. ARF Adoption fees: $100 for an adult cat, $150 for a kitten (<6months), $150 for two adult cats, $250 for two kittens, $50 for a special-needs cat, $75 for a special-needs kitten (<6months), and $50 for a senior cat (7+ years).

How do I protect public Wi-Fi I provide to my customers? By Anthony Regina, CEO at Bay Area IT Solutions, Inc.
I
f your company provides public Wi-Fi to your customers, are you doing all you need to do to protect them from cyber-attacks?
As a business owner who provides public Wi-Fi to your guests, you can not guarantee which anti-virus software your guest has on his/ her computer (assuming they have any at all). Providing guest Wi-Fi is rapidly becoming a standard for businesses. Guest W-Fi works for most businesses, whether a distraction for kids in a waiting room of a doctor’s office, or as a business tool for working in a coffee shop. When you provide public W-Fi, you have a responsibility to block sites that will make customers uncomfortable if someone else around them is viewing them. With Content Filtering technology, you can block specific sites, countries, and categories of content to block those web sites from loading. Content filtering technology can be provided by different products from software to install on individual computers, to a hardware firewall or to re-routing DNS traffic to a cloud provider.
Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses
Using a firewall or a DNS re-routing service will not only protect the public Wi-Fi, but it will also protect your internal network. Content Filtering will protect you and your customers from malware and phishing attacks. These threats are ever-present, If your employees or customers get an email with a link, content filtering will keep them safe if they click on a link they should not click on. By providing a free service at your company, you open yourself up to liability without the right protections in place. Blocking adult sites, hate or terrorism content, and violent sites not only makes your other customers feel more comfortable, it protects your business from possible future lawsuits. CIPA stands for “Children’s Internet Protection Act.” The main goal of the act is to block “children’s access to obscene or harmful content over the Internet.” This protection act “must block or filter Internet access to pictures that are: (a) obscene; (b) child pornography; or (c) harmful to minors (for computers that are accessed by minors)”.

Aperture Cellars: Spring Release Party By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990
R
ecently, we had the pleasure of attending Jesse Katz’s new winery Aperture Cellars Spring Release party in Healdsburg. Jesse Katz is a brilliant young winemaker who has traveled all over the world with his famous photographer father, Andy Katz.. Andy has traveled to 90 countries and has also written 14 books. Andy’s pictures grace Jesse’s bottles of wines, thus the name Aperture. He has also done album covers for many famous rock groups like the Doobie Brothers and others. His pictures also are displayed on the walls of this new winery that was completed in 2020. Jesse learned his winemaking craft working for famous wineries like Petrus in France and Screaming Eagle in Napa. He made the wedding wine for his friend Justin Timberlake and sold the most expensive bottle of Cabernet at the Napa auction for $350,000. The 2022 Spring Release featured these great wines with food bites perfectly paired with these works of art in a bottle. We especially enjoyed the 2019 Sauvignon Blanc, 2019 Red Bordeaux blend, and 2019 Oliver Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon. You can also purchase these “sensational” wines at Draeger’s Market in Blackhawk.

Healdsburg is a slice of “wine heaven” with many great restaurants, hotels and wineries. The Healdsburg Square also has many tasting rooms to enjoy. You can also just go for the day as it is an easy 1.5-hour drive from Danville. It is a “must do” to add to your wine bucket list. To make an appointment to visit and taste his wines go to: https://aperture-cellars.com/

hen it gets too hot in Blackhawk, my family loves to load up our bikes and head to Monterey to ride the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail. It’s always a lot cooler at the beach in Monterey, and this trail is our favorite bike ride because there is so much to see. This time we rode for 15 miles. We saw seals, lots of surfers and stopped for lunch at Bubba Gumps. If you are looking to escape the heat, and like to ride bikes, then I recommend a bike ride on the Monterey Coastal Trail.

Tsar Nicoulai Caviar By Marai Bolourchi, Vice President of Tsar Nicoulai Caviar
N
estled in a corner of Wilton, California is the Tsar Nicoulai Caviar Sturgeon Farm. Since its beginning in 1984, Tsar Nicoulai has been at the forefront of sustainable and environmental stewardship. An East Bay family became the owners of Tsar Nicoulai Caviar in 2014. The Bolourchis have remained committed to maintaining Tsar Nicoulai’s dedication to sustainable farming - constantly finding new ways to reduce waste, better the earth, keep their sturgeon happy, and provide the cleanest and healthiest American farmed caviar on the market. Tsar Nicoulai Caviar’s sturgeon farm is the 2nd largest sustainable sturgeon farm in the nation and the only one that is Eco-certified. They have a hatchery on property allowing them to oversee the entire process of caviar production – from spawning to harvesting. At their on-site smokehouse, sturgeon meat is smoked with spice combinations created by their farm staff. They also package and ship their products themselves. Because of their involvement in the making of their caviar, they can be completely transparent with their customers. In fact, they love sharing their passion so much, they often invite restaurant and retail clients to the farm to take a look around. They also offer exclusive caviar dinner and tours where guests get a sneak peak at the production process, enjoy a caviar themed dinner and take home goodie bags. Recently, the Bolourchi family brought Tsar Nicoulai Caviar Café back to the San Francisco Ferry Building. At the café, guests can enjoy inspired farm-to-table dishes featuring the many caviars and roes that Tsar Nicoulai offers. The Café is open Monday and Tuesday 11a-5p, Wednesday – Friday 11a-6p, Saturday 10a – 6p, and Sunday 11a – 5p. Tsar Nicoulai Caviar can be found in some local Bay Area grocery stores, as well as purchased online with properly insulated shipping. Lake Michigan’s Arcadia Bluffs South

L
ast month was the classic Arcadia Bluffs course on Lake Michigan. This month we profile the newer course a mile inland, the one with the square greens. The South Course at Arcadia Bluffs launched in 2018 with much adulation. Not content to rest on the laurels of the nationally acclaimed Bluffs
course, the folks at Arcadia Bluffs set out to create an equally impressive but different golf experience than their first course. Looking to capture the emotions experienced at prominent private courses in the early days, they studied, then captured the design intricacies and principals of architects C. B. Macdonald and Seth Raynor. Macdonald
18
is defined by founding and designing the Chicago Golf Club in 1893, the first 18-hole course in the U.S. and one of the most exclusive private clubs. He defined twenty-one design features that form the basis of modern links design. It was his student, Seth Raynor, that commercialized MacDonald’s template designs. Eleven templates are most used in links design. The Road Hole, the Redan Hole, the Short Hole, the Alps, the Double Plateau, the
JULY 2022
Eden, the Biarritz, the Punchbowl, the Leven, the Great Hazard, and the Cape Hole. They use variations of these templates in the South Course. The land is mildly undulating and designed to be walkable. There are only two trees on the course making wind a consistent factor. The routing reflects this as you change direction virtually every hole. Ten holes run east/ west and eight holes run north/south so the prevailing wind of the day will be a factor in all directions. Arcadia Bluffs promotes five features of the South Course that illustrate the architecture: • •
• • •
Rectangular tees with 90-degree corners. Large greens averaging over 9400 square feet that often have 90-degree corners. Swales, ridges, and slopes define different sections. A bold bunkering style defined by strong grass faces and ribbons of flat sand. Wide fairways and approaches offering optional lines of play. Firm and fast conditioning promoting the ground game around greens.
It’s about geometric angles. Rectangles and squares define the golf course features. It provides multiple angles for shot making.
These features make the course pop out of the otherwise unremarkable rectangular section of flattish land. Fairways are generous averaging 50-55 yards wide. Another 15-20 yards of clean cut rough. Fairway bunkers are a dominant feature. Most of the fairway bunkers are rectangular, crossing the fairway and staggered with 4foot grass faces. This reduces the size of the landing area putting a strong emphasis on accuracy. Your tee shot needs to find the best line and distance to avoid the bunkers. Virtually every par4 or par5 tee shot provides a choice to challenge the bunkers or play safe. Knowing how far these bunkers are and the distance you hit your woods is critical to success. The large tract of land used has sandy soil that drains well enables superb conditioning. It’s perfect - firm and fast. The square greens are just a fantastic element that adds to the mystique. How close to the corners will they put the hole locations? The variety of hole locations The South Course is a tribute to a bygone era. The focus on angles drives a strategic thinking for shot making. For everyday golfers, it provokes a wide range of reactions. Don’t miss it when you go to Arcadia Bluffs resort.
If You Go: Course Info - Arcadia Bluffs includes the original eighteen holes on Lake Michigan designed by Warren Henderson and Rick Smith in 1999 as a seaside links course. The new South Course is 1 mile south but inland, a simpler links courses designed by Dana Fry and Jason Straka. Fees - Peak $215, replay after 4pm $140. Caddies: $65-125 including tip. Replay $110. Yardages - Five sets of tees from 5024 yards to 7300 yards. Location - Arcadia, Michigan on Lake Michigan. Fifty miles southwest of Traverse City, Michigan. Five hours northwest of Detroit, and six hours from Chicago. Quintessential Golf (https://www. quintessentialgolf.com) A source of golf travel inspiration, Quintessential Golf online magazine spotlights the most spectacular, enduring and scenic courses, resorts and golf adventures. Written from a players point-of-view, articles include magnificent high-resolution course images. The Social Event of the Season By Michael Mooney, Resident Since 2001
M
ay was mental health awareness month, and Discovery Counseling Center’s hugely successful fundraiser, An Evening of Music and Laughter, played to over 300 people on the 19th. As if moving the annual event from the fall to the spring wasn’t enough, the originator of this night of song and comedy also moved/changed the venue. “Having sold out the Village Theater in downtown Danville the prior 6 years, the location this year was the beautiful 300 seat Tahoe Auditorium located within the Bishop Ranch Roundhouse in San Ramon” says Mike Copeland, the Bill Graham type creator of the show and its charismatic host. “The Roundhouse is one of the preeminent event venues in the East Bay and we were very excited about stepping up the size and scope of our show”. Sunset Development is teaming up with Discovery Counseling Center to host this year’s event.
Discovery Counseling Center is a community based non-profit organization serving the San Ramon Valley for over 50 years. Discovery Counseling Center’s mission is to be the community’s leader in mental wellness by: • Providing affordable, high quality, culturally appropriate and accessible counseling services and programs; • Offering excellent and highly regarded training for future mental health professionals; • Creating greater awareness of the prevalence of mental wellness issues in our community and the importance of early treatment. • Serving as the community’s advocate in securing adequate funding and resources for the treatment of mental wellness issues.
The spring show featured musical headliner Fleetwood Macrame, an entertaining and energetic Fleetwood Mac tribute band. Opening the show, was the hysterically funny, Bay Area based comedian, Shawn Felipe. “Who doesn’t like Fleetwood Mac music?” said Mary Verstraete, a show committee member from the beginning. She added, “Shawn Felipe was hilarious, and I can’t wait to see him again.”
Proceeds from this entertaining show are critical in helping Discovery provide counseling to families and children going through stressful and difficult times. “Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, donors and patrons, Discovery can offer affordable and highquality counseling services to families in need,” Copeland added.
Over the past eight years, the show has featured some incredibly talented musicians such as Eric Martin of Mr. Big, David Victor from BOSTON, Nashville songwriter Paul Jefferson, Jeff Campbell (solo and with his band Static & Surrender) Stung - a tribute to The Police and The Malodors – Vanderbilt’s award winning acapella group. The night has featured emerging artists such as Sophia Pecoraro, Kiley Rothchild, Hays & Company and Courtney Randall. Along the way, the show has also introduced the audience to comedians such as Bryan Kellen, Karen Rontowski, Sammy Obeid, Tony Camin, Anthony Hill and David Vanavermaete.
With so much media focus on the importance of mental health treatment in our communities, this highly entertaining fundraiser is integral to funding the critically important programs that Discovery offers. The show picks up momentum every year and has proven to be an incredibly fun evening and quite the social event of the season, albeit, a new season.

The Benefits of Fat Transfer for Breast Augmentation
By Stephen J. Ronan MD FACS, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery and MedSpa
T
his time of year we conduct quite a few consultations on breast augmentation procedures. And while most women are interested in enhancing the size and shape of their breasts using breast implants, advancements in the field of medicine have led to innovative alternatives to traditional breast augmentation procedures. This month I’m going to discuss the benefits of one such procedure: fat transfer to the breast. A fat transfer procedure (also called autologous fat transfer or microlipoinjection) involves transplanting fat from one area of your body to another. Because the fat comes from your own body, you cannot develop an allergic reaction. Common target areas include the face, butt, hands and breasts. Fat transfer to the breast is a safe procedure designed to fill out and add a modest amount of volume to breasts. There are several benefits to this approach.
Reduces Localized Fat Deposits
Fat transfer breast augmentation procedures work by harvesting localized fat deposits from a donor area on the patient’s body before re-injecting them into the breast tissue. By harvesting fat tissue from the abdomen, hips, thighs, or buttocks, fat transfer breast augmentation can increase the size of your breasts while simultaneously removing stubborn pockets of fat in other areas of your body that are unresponsive to diet and exercise.
we are here to help. Give us a call at (925) 736-5757 or visit our newly redesigned website at www.blackhawkplasticsurgery.com to schedule a free, no-obligation consultation. We look forward to hearing from you… and exploring the possibility of sculpting a new you this summer season!
Uses Your Body’s Own Fat Cells
Fat transfer breast augmentation is unlike traditional breast enhancement procedures in that it utilizes your body’s own natural fat cells rather than silicone or saline breast implants. While traditional breast augmentation procedures are incredibly safe when performed by a skilled surgeon, some women choose to undergo natural breast augmentation utilizing fat transfer methods because there is absolutely no risk of implant failure.
Offers Natural-Looking Results
A number of women struggle to choose between silicone and saline breast implants because they are not sure which type and size of implant will provide the most natural-looking results. Fortunately, fat transfer augmentations can enhance the size, proportion, and volume of your breasts while providing results that look and feel perfectly natural. It’s a great alternative to implants for patients who are looking for a modest increase in breast size and volume.
Reduces Recovery Time
Because fat transfer breast augmentations increase the size of the breasts with injections rather than incisions, most patients require little downtime. In fact, most patients are able to return to work within a few days following their procedure. If you are interested in fat transfer injections, traditional breast augmentation, facial rejuvenation or any other cosmetic procedure, BLACKHAWK LIVING CA 31

MIA - T var Foster Dog Program
Meet Mia, an 8 to 9 month old Cattle dog/Kelpie mix looking for her forever home. Mia and her sister Biddy, had a tough start in life. The two sisters came into the shelter at about 6 months old both super shy and fearful. They needed to go to a foster home so they could learn that no one will hurt them, learn how to be puppies - and to help them find their forever homes. Biddy got adopted quickly - but Mia is still looking for her forever home. Mia will win you over in an instant with her adorable face and expressive ears. She loves playing with toys, sunbathing in the backyard and getting lots of belly rubs. She is very smart, knows basic commands and enjoys playing with her canine companion in her foster home. Like all TVAR foster dogs, Mia is spayed, microchipped and has all of her vaccines. TVAR gives deserving animals like Mia another chance by taking them into foster care. All TVAR dogs live in foster homes till adopted. Foster families get to know each dog’s personality and needs in a home setting- allowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs and adopters thrive!

Zoya is in foster care with a member of the TriValley Animal Rescue and would love to meet you to share the affection she wants to share with the world. She is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and tested negative for FIV/FeLV and looking for her forever home. TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes.
Tri-Valley Animal R escue (T VAR ) - Giving them Another Chance
TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs. All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens and the Public.

Su mmer Picnic Planning By Tori Draeger Paff, Draeger’s Market
P
icnics are a big part of summer family fun! Whether at a park, the beach, or out camping, there are a few general secrets for picnicking successfully (especially with kids!) Take into consideration your destination. If you’re heading to a local park, you can bring a hefty cooler without lugging it any great distance, but if your destination is a state beach, packing everything in one bag can get heavy walking across the sand. Try packing two separate coolers, one with drinks and one with food to distribute the weight. Think about the distance you need to cross and the amount you’re bringing. The best part of a picnic is trying to figure out what food and drinks to pack! This will depend on who is picnicking with you - a family affair requires planning for kids, while a day out with friends might include an extra bottle of rosé. When packing drinks for kids, water and a few Capri Sun lemonades (because they don’t come in glass bottles, which are banned in some places) fit the bill. When adulting, craft beer in cans, like Fort Point KSA, can be a refreshing choice. A romantic evening picnic might include bringing a bottle of like Roederer Estate Brut sparkling wine or Ken Wright Pinot Noir repackaged in a reusable thermos like Hydro Flask 25oz wine bottle.
with how you plan to picnic: a feast on the ground requires chairs or a blanket. For the places that provide tables, bring a tablecloth. Next, think about what you are packing for food and drinks, and go through the mental checklist of plates, napkins, silverware, serving plates and utensils, and Tupperware for left over storage. Remember- you’re not just carrying food and drinks, you’re carrying a blanket and potentially a smattering of sports equipment, portable speakers, or fishing gear. If you have extra hands to carry these extra toys, that’s wonderful- unless you’re the parent who ends up carrying everything back to the car. The old rule still applies: pack in what only what you’re willing to pack out! If it makes you feel any better, after the food is eaten, the load gets lighter. Have fun picnicking this summer!
Family picnics are made easy when stopping by Draeger’s Deli counter. Have them whip up everyone’s favorite sandwich, select a pint of coleslaw, Draeger’s famous German potato salad, or fruit salad, and a few bags of chips. If you are looking to upscale your picnic experience, bring the components for a charcuterie board: grapes or sliced apple, Raincoast Crisp crackers, salami slices, a Danish blue cheese, and a farm-style hard cheddar. Try to pick food that will hold up to being jostled in transit and easy to clean up (nothing sticky, leave the truffled honey at home this time!). Creature comforts are next on the list. What are you going to sit on, do you have extra glasses, do you need forks or a cheese knife? Start

The Gap: Services Expected vs. Services Received By Henry Chau, CPWA®, WestPac Wealth Partners
C
lients often equate wealth management with providing investment advice, but investments are just one piece of the overall pie. The other big pieces, often overlooked, include risk management and tax planning during wealth accumulation, distribution, and transfer. These pieces amongst others are vital when it comes to achieving and preserving wealth. Spectrum Group, a leading research firm, that strategically analyzes its ongoing primary research with investors to assist financial providers and advisors in understanding the voice of the investor found a staggering gap between the services a client expected from their wealth manager and the services actually provided. In a technological era where efficiency and optimization dominate, these concepts segue into other industries, like Financial Services. Financial advisors are under more and more pressure from both clients and regulatory bodies, such as FINRA, to have the client’s best interest in mind. The industry often uses the terms “holistic” and “comprehensive” to describe wealth management services, but many times, as seen in Spectrum’s research, advice is only centered around creating a portfolio for your investable assets. Benjamin Franklin’s famous quote, “nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Is perhaps even more pertinent in today’s world, especially with states such as CA implementing taxes upwards of 13%. For the majority of Americans, the combination of federal and state taxes will ultimately be the great hindrance of wealth accumulation. At WestPac Wealth Partners, we strive to achieve accountability through academia and advance designations, an in-house advance planning team comprised of JDs and CPAs, and partnering with other trusted advisors of other industries.
Keep an eye out for our upcoming articles as we address some of the above expected services that are currently not being provided by many advisors. Tax changes are coming, either in the way of a Biden Tax Plan or expiring provisions from the Tax Cut and Jobs Act. Prepare and preserve the hard-earned wealth that you’ve created. Success is when preparation meets opportunity!

Supreme Fresh Fruit Combo By Parisa Z. Ambwani, Resident since 1983
A
magnificentsummerfruitdessertworthyofitsname Make this dessert in the summer months when fresh fruits are in season and plentiful. Serves 4 • ½ pineapple, skin removed, cored, cut into chunks • 2 peaches, peeled, remove pit, cut in chunks • 2 pears, peeled, cored, cut in chunks • 2 kiwis, peeled, cut into 8 pieces • 2 nectarines, cut flesh into half • 12 oz. strawberries, remove stems, cut in half lengthwise • 6 oz. red raspberry • 12 oz. white and black seedless grapes • 2 tablespoons turbinado powdered sugar • 2 tablespoons young mint leaves, chopped Garnish: 4 mint sprigs, and 2 teaspoons pistachio, roughly chopped Carefully rinse, pat dry, trim, peel, pit/core fruits. Except grapes and raspberries, cut fruits (pineapple, peaches, pears, kiwis, nectarines, and strawberries) into small pieces. Gently mix all fruits together. Chill half of the fruits in refrigerator for several hours. Place remaining half of fruits into power blender (first start with soft ones). Add sugar and mint and blend until a thick sauce forms (sauce will be about 2 cups). Place a fine sieve or cheese cloth over a bowl and press fruit sauce through sieve and collect clear fruit sauce and set aside. When you are ready to serve, compile chilled fruits on a nice serving plate. Pour fruit sauce over fruits (some sauce may flow onto the plate). Garnish with mint sprig and pistachio prior to serving. reate your own stamp! So this was a lot of fun. When I saw this idea on @jonehallmark’s Instagram account I thought it would be a great idea for a zippered bag and a sketchbook. You can even personalize it further with fabric paint, patches, gems and buttons (let your imagination go). I purchased a Speedball Stamp Making Kit, the “fabric ink” inkpad, canvas zip bags and the sketchbooks from amazon.com.

I carved out my stamp design on the stamp material provided in the kit and the carving tools by first drawing the image on the stamp material with a permanent marker. The instructions on carving the rubber stamp material are pretty straight forward. I used an exacto knife to create the initial cuts around the design and then the carving tool to remove the unwanted material. Then I practiced stamping on some paper and scrap fabric. After testing my design, I stamped the actual bags and sketchbooks. I am really happy with the way they turned out.

Here are some photos of the bags and sketchbooks, the rubber stamp kit and the bags with the designs stamped on them. The ink in the tube created a dark stamp. The stamp pad created a lighter image. I hope you’ll try this at home. I am definitely going to create more stamps in the future. Super easy and fun. I really enjoyed the process and the final outcome. Happy stamping! Michelle Barry

Cars and Coffee
NorCal Karmann Ghia Enthusiasts By David Tom, Resident Since 1990
A
re you familiar with the Karmann Ghia? They are not so common as Volkswagen ended its almost 20-year production run in 1974. While mechanically and electronically identical to the Beetle, VW engaged Karmann, the German body builder, and Carrozzeria Ghia, the Italian design house, to collaborate on its distinctive style. Enter the NorCal Karmann Ghia Enthusiasts. The Club was formed in 2021, for owners to meet for shows and rallies and to share knowledge and experiences of their beloved cars. On December 19, 2021, the Club came to Blackhawk for their show, Karmann Ghia Day at the Museum. Please look for them on Facebook if you are interested in their monthly ‘Ghias and Coffee’ and other events.
David Tom: I have lived in Danville for 30 years. I retired from the corporate tax world and now pursue a variety of projects that interest me. I have always loved cars and look forward to sharing them with you.

Keep Your Summer
Sparkles Sparkling! By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry and The Forevermark Boutique at Broadway Plaza
A
s travel restrictions continue to loosen, everyone is booking the trips and vacations we’ve all been craving! Weekend getaways, jaunts to the beach, and full-fledged vacations are perks that pretty much come with the territory during the summer months, so it’s no wonder that summer fashion tips such as what to wear, what to pack, what to buy—are at the forefront of our minds right now. One thing, though, that’s not quite as readily on our radar is the idea of jewelry, and how the summer months might affect our pieces. Namely, how we can protect our beloved rings, jewelry, necklaces, and earrings from the season’s elements, and how we can keep them secure while jetting off somewhere sun-filled. Our jewelry can take a serious bruising when exposed to summer activities such as lounging in the sand, applying suntan lotion, and traveling. Whether your summer plans include a weekend trip or a week abroad. Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind while you enjoy the beauty of summer:
Before you go away, be sure your jewelry is adequately insured.
If you decide to bring an especially valuable piece on vacation— perhaps your engagement ring, a pricey watch, or a family heirloom—always be sure it is fully insured. Always obtain insurance through your homeowners or renters policy or a jewelry insurance company like Jewelers Mutual - it is safe and more affordable than you would imagine. Our team at Padis Jewelry is happy to assist you with any questions or maintenance for your pieces to ensure they stay safe and sparkly throughout the year. Feel free to reach us at concierge@ padisjewelry.com if we can be of assistance in any way. Wishing you and your family lots of happy memories and vacations during these lovely summer months!
Sunbathe without your Gems
Sunscreen can coat gemstones, which reduces refractive and reflective light. Essentially, this means your stones won’t be as brilliant or sparkly. To avoid this, leave your fine pieces at home if you’re heading to the beach or the pool for the day, and be sure clean them regularly all summer.
Organization is key when traveling.
When jumbled together, your jewelry doesn’t always get along. For example, a diamond can scratch a pearl, and a bracelet can get caught on a necklace, so always pack pieces in individual soft cloth pouches or lined jewelry boxes to prevent scratching, dulling, and the dreaded tangling of chains.
Keep it safe.
When selecting a hotel, be sure that safe deposit boxes are available. Never leave fine jewelry unattended in a hotel room, a rental car, or on a lounge chair—even if you’re just popping over to the bar for a Mai Tai.
Shopping for something new? Do your research.
Oftentimes, vacation destinations are also prime shopping destinations, so if you get the urge to commemorate your trip with a new fine jewelry purchase make sure you’re buying from a reputable jeweler that’s been in business for several years. Many stores in vacation destinations prey on unknowing tourists whose guard is down due to a few too many mojitos. When in doubt, check a retailer’s reputation and rating with the Better Business Bureau and always ask for an appraisal. The appraisal should always have the store’s letterhead, and a clear signature of a member of store management. 38
