Dear Neighbors,

When it comes to Fourth of July Celebrations, there is no need to leave the gates to celebrate America’s independence in style. The Blackhawk Country Club’s annual Fourth of July Extravaganza is one of my family’s favorite events in the community. We love seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces as they go on the carnival rides and visit with friends, but our favorite part is cuddling up on a blanket to watch the spectacular show in the sky after dark. Our community Independence Day Celebration is just one of the many ways to show your patriotism and celebrate America’s independence. Be sure to check out our community calendar for other Fourth of July activities.

We are devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share, please email me at mscott@bestversionmedia.com.

Wishing your family a very happy Fourth of July Holiday!

Warmly,

Megan Scott

Laurie De Seguirant: Meet A True Renaissance Man

“Hope, health, happiness. To possess these three gifts is to enjoy life to the fullest! The opportunities we are given to share them with others are life’s most precious rewards—and responsibilities,” says this month’s cover feature, Laurie De Seguirant.

It is a principle Laurie has lived by since he was eleven years of age when a visiting minister to his church shared the story of a man who died and went to heaven, only to find his new place of residence stacked with previously unfulfilled opportunities and unanswered prayers. The man inquired what these were and why he had not received them when he needed them most. His Heavenly Host lovingly smiled and said, “these are the things I wanted to give you, but you never asked, you never prepared yourself for—you never joyfully anticipated.” At eleven years of age, Laurie made the decision to never become that man.

After attending Bible college, he served in several churches as a youth director, assistant to the pastor, and music director. However, he excelled in business and soon realized his ministry was not behind the pulpit but in everyday living. His manufacturing and engineering background landed him a partnership with Discovery Toys, where he designed children’s

educational products and directed all overseas ideation, design, production, quality and safety.

A love for the Arts motivated Laurie to become involved in community theater, where he received ten top-acting awards, and the Newspaper Group Critic’s Award. It also opened doors as a professional voice artist for Apple, Microsoft, Toyota, Hills Brother’s Coffee, Gammet, Albertson’s, Levi’s, and many other corporations.

Last year, Laurie decided to add a new title to his long resume, that of published author.

Under the pen name, Lonnie Dustin, in September 2022, Laurie wrote his first novel.

“The Haughton’s Adoption of Evil, follows the fictional Haughton family business through three generations. Benjamin Haughton’s dream was no match for the sharpened blades of jealousy, greed, and deception the family would ultimately face,” says Laurie. “Pauline and Theodore possessed no regard for the Haughton principles. They were biological outsiders who formed an unholy alliance and waged a winner-take-all battle for the Haughton dynasty. Pauline, book two of the Haughton trilogy, answers lingering questions presented in book one. It explores Pauline Bianchi’s childhood. What were the influences in her life that resulted in her becoming the antagonists readers love to hate? Teddy, the third and final book, follows Theodore Haughton into the dark world of crime. He is a

psychopath with no regard for anyone, and he wears their scorn as a badge of honor. Is there a limit to his ill gained fortune? Does the bad-guy always win? Find out as the Haughton saga ends with Teddy, available in 2024.,”

A love of health and fitness motivated Laurie to create Luv’n Liv’n, a complimentary wellness ministry that is enjoyed by thousands around the world. As owner and operator, he uses the Facebook platform where, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, at 8:00AM Pacific time, he broadcasts his workout session with all who desire physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual encouragement.

Laurie and Chris, his wife of thirty-eight years, have three daughters, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. They have lived in Blackhawk eleven years, where Laurie enjoys growing, harvesting and making his own exclusive Chardonnay—just something to do in his free time. “Blackhawk gives true meaning to the word community! The beauty of Blackhawk’s

surroundings, the warmth emanating from neighbors, the diversity of thought, culture, and professional achievements, make Blackhawk Country Club our final move. We’ve found our dream— and are living it,” says Laurie.

Protecting Your Investments

For most of us, our home is the largest investment of our lives.

We work hard to maintain and protect the exterior materials of our house to extend its longevity, but are we doing all we can to protect the interior? While we Californian’s love our sunshine, it is not a friend to our most vulnerable furnishings in our homes interior like artwork and family heirlooms.

Determining what your space needs has many elements to consider when sorting through all the options in window coverings.

Ask yourself what you want aesthetically and what the space demands (temperature control, privacy, etc.). Marrying the two can be daunting but fortunately you don’t have to go it alone. Elite’s designers are experienced in all aspects of the process.

Sunscreen for Your Art, Fabric, Rugs & Furniture

We all know the importance of protecting our skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays. But have you ever thought about what the sun could be doing to your valuable art, furniture, flooring and other home interiors? Luckily, the right window treatments can not only protect your furnishings from the sun, but they can increase energy efficiency, add value, and create the perfect ambiance in your home.

Even Furnishings Need Sunblock

The damaging effects of the sun on your furnishings can be brutal. Even on cloudy days, the sun can fade and deteriorate your fabrics, carpet, hardwood floors and even your artwork. It can bleach and dry out your wood furniture, breaking down the stain or paint finishes and joint sealants. And on top of that, the heat can run up your electric bill. But with all the window treatment options out there, how do you know which ones are right for you?

Light Control + Energy Efficiency

Honeycomb cellular window shades also have a selection of lightcontrol options from sheer to opaque, plus an energy-efficient design that adds a layer of insulation at the window. They typically block 98%-99% of damaging UV rays. They are available in single and double cell. Double cell shades have a honeycomb-within-ahoneycomb design with more insulating air pockets than the single construction.

UV Protection

Rooms that get a lot of sun require a window treatment that both blocks sunlight and regulates room temperature. And while a roomdarkening fabric might be fine for a room with less light, a blackout shade lets you enjoy complete darkness in light-facing rooms, any time of day. A great choice for excellent UV protection that also maintains your view of the outdoors, Screen shades are perfect for patios and sunrooms, and they offer different opacities so you have a variety of options for controlling light.

Sheer Window Treatments = UV Protection

Depending on your needs, you don’t necessarily have to go with non-sheer window treatments. Sheer window coverings can block

up to 88% of UV rays—and that’s with the vanes open! This allows you to protect your home’s interior without sacrificing your view.

Finding The Right One

There are so many choices and unfortunately, also the opportunity to make the wrong one. Elite Shutters & Shadings can help you navigate through the process of finding the best options for your home. We have a team of experienced designers, installers and support staff to guide you throughout your entire project. As a certified Hunter Douglas repair facility, Elite can also support your purchase with post installation services backed by one of the most robust warranties in the industry.

We look forward to assisting you with your window covering project.

A Glass Full of Miracles

Recently,my wife Linda and I had the pleasure of attending a by invitation only event labeled ‘A Glass Full Of Miracles’ celebrating the 100th birthday and joyous life of Mike Grgich of Grgich Hills Estate at the Culinary Institute of America in beautiful St. Helena.

Close friends, dignitaries, and various members of the press tasted fantastic wines and shared memories of Mike’s fantastic life. Mike’s daughter Violet, President of Grgich Hills winery, organized this special event.

Some of the dignitaries included:

• Andrea Robinson, Master Sommelier

• Joel Aiken, Winemaker Beaulieu Vineyard

• Tim Mondavi, Winemaker

• Mike Mondavi, Winemaker

• Bo Barrett, Winemaker Chateau Montelena and husband of Winemaker Heidi Barrett

• Tor Kenward, Winemaker and Executive Berringer Vineyard

Some of the ‘Miracles In A Glass’ included:

• 1966 Beaulieu Vineyard Georges De Latour

• 1967 Beaulieu Vineyard Georges De Latour

• 1969 Robert Mondavi

Cabernet Sauvignon

• 1969 Robert Mondavi

Chardonnay

• 1972 Chateau Montelena

Chardonnay

• 1973 Chateau Montelena

Cabernet Sauvignon

• 1980 Grgich Hills Estate

Cabernet Sauvignon

• And many others from the Grgich Hills Estate library.

In conclusion, we have enjoyed the pleasure and honor to know Mike, Violet and the Grgich family for over 30 years. We have also been to the beautiful country of Croatia twice where Mike was born and also has a winery.

This tribute to Mike was very special for us. We should all be so ‘lucky’ to be drinking great wine when we turn 100 years old.

SentryWorld –A Rare Experience

Ifyou’re an avid golfer, you may have watched the best over-50 golfers compete in the 2023 US Senior Open. It was contested last month at the beautiful SentryWorld Golf Course in central Wisconsin. Built by Sentry Insurance in 1982 by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr the course is renowned for its iconic flower hole. The author grew up only 100 miles north and has played the course many times. The course has special significance for me as my father watched me play not long before he passed away.

SentryWorld is a golf complex that features luxury housing at the Inn, a sports & recreation center (The Fieldhouse) with volleyball, tennis and other games, and multiple fine restaurants. In preparation for the Senior Open they closed the course for two years (2020-2021) to make major changes. The same SubAir system used at Augusta National was installed on every green to achieve pristine green quality. They are simply perfect. They installed drip irrigation around every bunker to achieve a dramatic green picture frame around the beautiful white sand bunkers.

Changes were made not only for the Pros but also for their regular customers. Tee times are now spaced every 20 minutes instead of the usual 10 minutes to eliminate any feeling of being rushed. Now included in the $295 green fee are unlimited food and beverages (including alcohol) are stocked at four refreshment stations. A bartender can make your favorite cocktail on the course. The extensive candy selection compliments the homemade ice cream. This is a very rare inclusive experience few other golf courses can match.

Cut through immense towering pines are pristine fairways surrounded by large white bunkers and very blue water. Amply placed gorgeous flowers among the perfectly manicured grass creates a surreal outdoor feeling. I was almost afraid to take a divot.

And then there is the infamous “flower hole” - Par 3 Hole 16. Between 20,000 and 30,000 flowers are blooming depending on the design for the year. My favorite Snapdragons (amply planted in my yard on Deer Meadow Drive in Blackhawk), Petunias, Geraniums, and others abound. Planted near Memorial Day, they reach the best bloom in late July through middle of August, so you may want to plan your trip accordingly. The SentryWorld course is far more than the flower hole. An island green, multiple forced carries, drivable Par4s and reachable Par5s make this a very fun golf course to play.

Rated as #50 in Golf Digest’s Top 100 Public Courses You Can Play, I guarantee that you will have an amazing experience.

If You Go:

Course Info - SentryWorld includes eighteen holes of championship golf.

Location – Stevens Point, Wisconsin. The Ultimate Driving Machine

TheBMW Car Club of America

Golden Gate Chapter hosted their Spring car show at the Blackhawk Museum on April 30, 2023. The show featured a wide range of BMW models from the 1970s through the current day, all in top shape. Bill Arnold’s beautifully restored e30 was a highlight and was a real showstopper, with its pristine condition and classic styling. The show was a great opportunity to see a variety of BMWs up close and talk to owners about their cars and to see why these cars are so beloved. Whether you were a serious enthusiast or just admiring these German-made classics, it was a day to celebrate the love of driving.

We kicked off summer break with a trip to Universal Studios! They recently opened a new Nintendo World, which I was really excited to see. The land felt like you were walking into a Nintendo game. They did a good job with it. My favorite ride was Jurassic Park, and I also really liked the Studio Tour. We got to see where the movies are made. Reshape Your Confidence: Unlocking the Potential of Liposuction

Intoday’s world, achieving the perfect body shape is a common aspiration for many. Despite regular exercise and healthy eating habits, some individuals may find themselves struggling with stubborn fat deposits that resist their efforts. For many of these individuals, liposuction is a highly effective and popular solution. Liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess fat deposits from specific areas of the body. It is highly effective in addressing stubborn fat that is resistant to diet and exercise. Common treatment areas include the abdomen, thighs, hips, arms, back, and neck. With liposuction, individuals can finally bid farewell to those persistent bulges and achieve a more sculpted and toned physique.

One of the key benefits of liposuction is its ability to enhance body contours. By targeting and removing unwanted fat, liposuction can create smoother lines and improve the overall shape and proportion of treated areas. This results in a more balanced and contoured figure that is often unattainable through diet and exercise alone. Having a positive body image plays an important role in boosting self-confidence and overall well-being. Liposuction can have a

transformative impact on individuals’ self-esteem by addressing their specific body concerns. With stubborn fat gone and a more sculpted physique, patients often experience a significant increase in self-confidence.

Liposuction is a well-established and safe procedure when performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon. Technological advancements, such as tumescent liposuction and ultrasoundassisted liposuction, have further improved the safety and precision of the procedure. However, it’s important to consult with a boardcertified plastic surgeon who can assess your suitability for liposuction and guide you through the process.

Interested in learning more? The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction is to schedule a consultation. During this consultation, the liposuction procedure is explained in detail and all of your questions are answered. To schedule an in person or virtual consultation, please contact my office at 925.736.5757. I look forward to hearing from you… and exploring the possibility of sculpting a new you!

MVHS Track and Field: Vaulting to Victory

Monte Vista High School is home to many elite sports programs. From basketball to volleyball to soccer, there is no denying that Monte Vista epitomizes athletic excellence. Nevertheless, there are many undervalued sports programs at Monte Vista, which tend to fly under the radar. Look no further than the Monte Vista High School pole vaulting team, which seems poised to breakout in the next couple of years.

So, what exactly is pole vaulting? Pole vaulting involves running with and gradually lowering a fiberglass pole that is specially designed to bend. Once lowered, the pole is “planted” into an aluminum “box” in the ground, which allows the pole to bend. Similar to how a spring compresses, in pole vaulting, athletes harness the energy created by the bend of the pole to launch themselves into the air. Pole vaulters must possess a combination of speed, strength, flexibility, and technique, each of which are instrumental towards success.

As a second year vaulter myself, I embarked upon this season eager to improve significantly. In my first season, I lacked the proper technique to consistently bend the pole and this hindered my development. This past season, however, I honed in on my technique, which directly led to my improved performance. With the guidance of my coach and encouragement from my teammates, I was able to increase my personal record by more than two feet, ending the season at ten and a half feet. My teammates experienced similar improvements, as we concluded the season with five vaulters going ten feet or higher. This remarkable improvement highlights the goal-oriented nature of pole vaulting, which encourages athletes to strive for new heights and personal bests. Andersen Lee, a first year pole vaulter at Monte Vista High School, reflected upon his first season. While admitting that he was “definitely a little scared at first, especially after [seeing] videos on the internet of poles snapping,” Lee

recalled how he “took it slow with a low grip on the pole until [he] built up confidence” (Lee). Eventually, the pole vaulting motion became muscle memory for him, and now, it is seemingly effortless. Just like with any sport, in pole vaulting, practice allows athletes to develop repeatable habits, which help to establish a foundation of consistency.

This year, the Monte Vista pole vault team consisted almost entirely of underclassmen, with the exception of one Junior. Despite their youth, the team managed to send three qualifiers to the NCS Championships, two of whom were Sophomores. Of course, no team can flourish without a dedicated and engaged coach who challenges their athletes to strive for improvement. Luckily, Monte Vista pole vault has Coach Graham, the longest tenured coach and heart and soul of the Track and Field Program. Coach Graham is a former collegiate vaulter who often applies the knowledge that he gained from his own career when instructing his athletes. Coach Graham possesses the unique ability to empower his athletes, never failing to motivate them with his inspirational pep-talks and hilarious, yet effective analogies. He also has a way of connecting with his vaulters, helping to foster a sense of camaraderie amongst the team. Because of Coach Graham’s contributions and reliable presence, the Monte Vista pole vault team was able to make massive strides this season, and currently, boasts four of the top six EBAL vaulters in the Class of 2025. The Monte Vista Pole Vault program looks forward to building off of a strong season and welcomes anyone who is interested in trying out this exciting and rewarding sport!

FOSTER DOG RUPERT - STILL LOOKING FOR HIS FUREVER HOME

We know we featured Rupert last month – but this darling boy still needs to find his own forever home. Here are some quotes from our amazing shelter volunteers:

• “I just adore this dog. He is sweet, loving and deserves a wonderful forever home”.

• “Rupert is like our mascot. But we want to see him get the home he deserves.”

• “Rupert makes me smile and laugh. He may be 10 years old – but he sure doesn’t know it.”

• “When he spins to say hello – it just makes your heart sing and smile.”

• ”When he gazes adoringly into your eyes - it makes you melt.”

And the list goes on. Rupert is 10 years young, fun loving, active, walks well on leash and will make a great companion. He is a husky mix with very soft fur, already neutered and ready to find his new forever home. If you are interested in finding out more about Rupert or adopting this darling boy, please contact us at contact@tvar.org

TVAR Kitten Program: Oreo, Cookie, and Coco

Meet the boys: Oreo, Cookie, and Coco! These three incredibly charming and dashing classic tabby boys have captured hearts since the day they were born. Rescued when they were only a day old, their TVAR foster home has nursed them into remarkable kitties. When it comes to fun and games, these three fellows are the epitome of joyous enthusiasm. They are the best of friends, always eager to engage in playful shenanigans together. But what truly warms the heart is witnessing their adorable bond. When they tire themselves out from their adventures, they cuddle up in the most heartwarming displays of brotherly affection.

TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes It is through the collaborative efforts of TVAR’s volunteers and foster families that these kittens, once vulnerable and in need, are now on a path toward a future brimming with hope, joy, and endless possibilities.

Summer Sparkle: A Guide to Caring for Your Jewelry in the Sun

Summer is a season of fun, sun, and outdoor adventures. As you embrace the warm weather and soak up the sunshine, it’s essential to take extra care of your jewelry to ensure it remains in pristine condition. Exposure to sweat, sunscreen, saltwater, and other elements can cause damage to your precious pieces. In this article, members of the Padis team will offer their advice and explore valuable tips and techniques to help you keep your jewelry sparkling throughout the summer season!

1.Shield Your Jewelry from Sun and Heat

While basking in the summer sun, it’s crucial to protect your jewelry from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and extreme heat. Certain gemstones, such as amethyst and opal, can fade or lose their luster when exposed to excessive heat and UV rays. When you’re not wearing your jewelry, store it in a cool, shaded area, away from windows and heat sources. Additionally, avoid leaving your jewelry in hot cars or near swimming pools, as high temperatures can cause metal to expand and gemstones to become loose.

2. Remove Jewelry Before Swimming

As tempting as it may be to wear your favorite jewelry while taking a dip in the pool or ocean, it’s best to remove it before swimming. Chlorine and saltwater can be corrosive to metals and may cause discoloration or damage. Furthermore, the cold temperature of the water can cause your fingers to shrink, increasing the risk of losing rings. Always remember to store your jewelry safely before diving into the water to protect its beauty and longevity.

3. Avoid Contact with Sunscreen and Cosmetics

Sunscreen, lotions, and cosmetics play a vital role in protecting your skin during the summer months. However, they can have adverse effects on your jewelry. Chemicals present in these products, such as oils and sulfates, can tarnish metals and dull the sparkle of gemstones. To prevent this, apply sunscreen and other beauty products before putting on your jewelry. Ensure that the products have fully absorbed into your skin before adorning yourself with your favorite pieces.

4. Regular Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential for preserving the brilliance of your jewelry. Use a soft cloth to gently wipe away any dirt, oils, or residue that may accumulate on the surface. For more thorough cleaning, you can create a solution of warm water and mild soap. Soak your jewelry for a few minutes, gently scrub with a soft brush, and rinse thoroughly. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal or gemstones. If you’re uncertain about cleaning specific pieces, consult a Padis trusted advisor for advice and assistance.

5.Secure Proper Storage

When you’re not wearing your summer jewelry, proper storage is crucial. Keep your pieces separate to prevent tangling, scratching, or damage. Consider using individual jewelry pouches or small boxes with soft interiors. This will help protect delicate

chains, prevent gemstones from rubbing against each other, and minimize the risk of your jewelry getting tangled. Taking a few extra moments to store your jewelry properly will ensure that it remains in excellent condition and ready for your next summer adventure.

6. Professional Inspection and Repairs

At the end of the summer season, it’s advisable to have your jewelry inspected by a professional jeweler. We can identify any potential issues, such as loose stones or weakened clasps, and perform any necessary repairs. This proactive approach will help prevent further damage and maintain the longevity of your cherished pieces. We can also provide guidance on specialized care for specific gemstones or metals, ensuring that your jewelry remains radiant and stunning for years to come.

As you embrace the joys of summer, it’s important to remember to care for your jewelry properly. Shield your pieces from excessive sunlight and heat, remove them before swimming, and avoid contact with sunscreen and cosmetics. Regular cleaning and proper storage are vital to maintaining their brilliance, while professional inspections and repairs will ensure their longevity. By following these tips, you can enjoy your favorite summer jewelry throughout the season and beyond, preserving its beauty and shine for countless sunny adventures to come.

Our team at Padis Jewelry is happy to assist you with any questions or maintenance for your pieces to ensure they stay safe and sparkly throughout the year. Feel free to reach us at concierge@ padisjewelry.com if we can be of assistance in any way. Wishing you and your family lots of happy memories and vacations during these lovely summer months!
