Hi neighbors! I’ve had a few similar questions asked recently by our neighbors so I thought that I would take the time to share the answers with the community. As the founder and publisher of Blackhawk Living, I personally meet with every single owner of each business to approve them as a sponsor. The sponsors in our magazine are selected in the area of reputation, customer service and expertise in the category of business. Not every business is able to be guaranteed in our magazine just because they are in business!! I hope that you find Blackhawk Living as a protection filter for you, the consumer. Furthermore, these sponsors make our community magazine possible - there are no paid subscriptions, it is delivered free to you each month! While you are free to deal with any business, inside or outside of this magazine, these businesses made a decision to be a part of our community. They want your patronage. Without our sponsors’ generosity, our community magazine would not exist, so give them a chance and make them earn your business! Fondly,

Jo Peek Founder & Publisher

spend a great deal of time with me here in Blackhawk because she works in the city,” says Cassandra. Cassandra has led a successful career as the Co-Founder of a software company that helps advance medical research via fluorescent microscopic applications; a Fortune 500 commercial executive in the medical/in vitro diagnostics market; a medical technologist and a consultant. She also is a guest lecturer for the San Francisco State MBA program. Recently, she has teamed up with a fellow Blackhawk resident, Al Sisto (CEO of Tern PLC), and is working with him as a Venture Partner, focusing on funding and advising young, yet promising, life sciences and medical device companies.

C

assandra Boyer loves to tell people that moving to Blackhawk eight years ago, was one of the best decisions she has ever made. “I had a larger home in Danville, and decided to downsize and move to the Golf Villas in Blackhawk once I was an empty nester. Blackhawk continues to surprise me with new, amazing experiences that I was not anticipating prior to moving here. I tell my friends that I live in Disneyland,” says Cassandra. Born and raised in Canton, Ohio, Cassandra graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in Medical Technology, became board certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and began her career at the University Hospital in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology lab. A few corporate moves led her to Chicago for three years, Minneapolis, MN and then back to Chicago for another seven years. While in Chicago, she began a family and had two daughters. “In 1993, a promotion led to another career move to California when Alix was 2-years-old and Jenni was 10-weeks-old. I raised my daughters in Danville. After my girls went to college, I downsized and moved to Blackhawk. I’m also lucky that my daughter Jenni can

Cassandra’s eldest daughter, Dr. Alix Boyer and her son-in-law, Dr. Dan Skinner are both chiropractors who live in Victoria, BC, Canada. They are also entrepreneurs who started Third Space Movement, a functional fitness gym. They both attended Palmer College of Chiropractic in San Jose. Alix went to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and graduated with a B.S. degree in Kinesiology. Closer to home, her youngest daughter, Jenni Boyer lives part time in San Francisco and Blackhawk. Jenni graduated from U.C. Davis with a B.S. degree in Environmental Science and GIS. She now works as a sales executive for Honeycomb.io, specializing in helping software teams find bugs in seconds. When she’s not at a Giants game, she loves to paint abstract art, take long walks, and cook her family recipes. Family has always been Cassandra’s number one priority, “My family is the most important thing in my life. Jenni and I like to attend Giants and Warriors games, we enjoy boating on the SF Bay, hiking on Mt. Diablo, Point Lobos and in Point Reyes, and attending Bottle Rock Concerts in Napa as well as other music concerts. When I visit my daughter and son-in-law in Canada, we like to hike, play with their dog Gordie and see the sites in Victoria,” says Cassandra. Giving back to the community and mentoring has always been important to Cassandra. “I am a member of the California Life

I also have been nominated to serve on the Blackhawk Women Board of Directors as the VP of Membership. The Contra Costa County Food Bank is one of my favorite charities and I also volunteer with Jenni at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in San Francisco,” says Cassandra. Even though Cassandra and her family have traveled and enjoyed vacationing around the world, they always love coming home to Blackhawk. “I have never lived in a more friendly environment, with wonderful, kind and smart people–the best neighbors ever! I am loving all the activities that Blackhawk Women, Bloomers, Birdies and Ladies 9ers have to offer, plus the women in these groups are incredible! I am also loving the activities at the Country Club including golf, Bocce Ball and Monday Night Football! L

ori’s Legendary Cookies is a local mother daughter company – started by Lori Nader and her two daughters, Adele and Lindsay. Lori was the founder of Blue Chip Cookies based in San Francisco in the 1980’s – a cookie company that grew to over 65 brick and mortar bakeries across the country! Lori is also the creator of the first White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookie… ever! In fact, at that time, white chocolate didn’t exist in chip form. The chocolate was cut by hand until Lori’s uncle created a machine to chop large blocks of white chocolate in to small chunks for the cookies. Shortly after, Lori contacted Guittard Chocolate Company and they made the first white chocolate chip - just for her! Of course, now, white chocolate chips are readily available and White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies are one of the most popular cookies out there. Blue Chip Cookies was sold in the late 1990’s. Lori is back in the cookie business with her daughters, Adele and Lindsay, as Lori’s Legendary. Now three generations: Lori, raised in Walnut Creek and Adele and Lindsay, raised in Danville and attended San Ramon Valley High – as well as Adele’s daughter Gabrielle (10 months) who will surely be a part of the family business in no time! Lori’s Legendary is more than just a cookie company. A portion of their proceeds are donated to local churches, ministry events and meaningful non profit organizations. Each bag of cookies also includes an inspirational message with ten life ingredients. They truly are “cookies to satisfy your sweet tooth and your soul.” Lori’s Legendary Cookies are crispy, buttery and delicious - made with only the finest ingredients and unlike anything else on the market! They should come with a warning label… they are addictive and one is never enough! Currently, Lori’s Legendary Cookies come in four varieties: Chocolate Chip Crisp, White Chocolate Chip Crisp, Cinnamon Crisp and Oatmeal Raisin Crisp. You can find Lori’s Legendary Cookies at: Diablo Foods in Lafayette, Gene’s Fine Foods in Pleasanton, Draeger’s Markets, and local pop-ups such as Spotted Cow in Martinez, WISH in Walnut Creek, and The Kitchen at Alamo Ace. AuburnJames Winery: St. Helena Gem

By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990

R

ecently, we had the pleasure of visiting Auburn James Winery and Tasting Cottage in St. Helena. Matt Ospeck and his sister Mary Ann Cope had their dreams come true in 2005 with the first crush of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Raywood Vineyard in Napa Valley with Winemaker Jim Frost. In 2015, the winery moved to a historic property nestled between the Napa River and Silverado Trail in the heart of Napa Valley. Matt loves cars and worked over 20 years in the automotive industry. Auburn was a beautiful, stylish and sleek vehicle produced in Indiana from 1900-1937. James is AuburnJames’ winemaker. As a result, the name AuburnJames. Today we had the pleasure of tasting this award-winning juice with Matt. We especially enjoyed the 2017 Reserve Chardonnay, 2014 1001 Napa Valley Proprietary Red, and 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Rutherford. Several went back to Danville with us. In addition to the winery, you can enjoy these ‘great’ wines at Auburn Lounge located in Downtown Danville.

Roaring Camp Railroad

Junior Reporter

By Austin Scott, 3rd Grade, Tassajara Hills

L

ast month I visited Roaring Camp Railroad in Felton, CA. It was about an hour and a half drive from Blackhawk, but it felt like we were going back in time. The people that work at the Railroad Camp dress like it’s the olden days and they have lots of old buildings and train machines for you to look at. We rode in an old steam train from the Redwood Tree Forest in Felton to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. On the train ride, the conductor told us all about the big trees and the forest we were riding through, he also told us about the history of the train and the area surrounding it. I learned a lot. Once we got to the boardwalk, we rode the rides, played in the arcade and ate ice cream. It was a perfect day.

par5s and five par3s. On the front nine players start with a par5 and end with a par3. The twelfth hole is along the lake. The view is intoxicating. Unable to see the back of the green as it falls off toward the steep bluff, it reminds me of an infinity pool.

W

e look to famous ocean courses such as Pebble Beach, Bandon Dunes and Kiawah Island for tremendous water scenery combined with outstanding golf. Yet the Great Lakes also offer just such an opportunity. Whistling Straits on the west side of Lake Michigan, site of the 2021 Ryder Cup, meets that standard. The Bluffs Course at Arcadia Bluffs on the east side of Lake Michigan is lessor known, but no less exciting, picturesque, and challenging. Overlooking Lake Michigan, The Bluffs Golf course sits on windswept bluffs 180 feet above lake level with 3000 feet of lake frontage. It’s a stunning view. Many come just to enjoy the view with lunch on the terrace. Others enjoy golfers finishing on the eighteenth hole while lounging in the many Adirondack chairs perched above the green. Both take in panoramic views

of the golf course and the lake beyond. It’s one of the few public courses in the Midwest that has an active caddie program. Take one. Their advice and experience will improve your experience. Arcadia Bluffs offers boutique lodging and a fine dining restaurant. Guests can enjoy the tremendous views from their balconies and their dining table. A large outside patio area with heaters is comfortable. Enjoy amazing sunsets over the lake. The service level is as good as the view. The Bluffs Course is built in the likeness of a seaside links course, golfers traverse giant undulating dunes and tall wind fescue grasses while battling the wind. They shaped two hundred and fifty acres of deep woods and former fruit orchards. Native areas, sand dunes and bunkers create beauty and obstacles. The contrast between the deep green manicured fairways and the light brown scraggly windswept dunes is striking. It’s a links experience among the best in the country. The weather is unpredictable and varies. Flagsticks have been ripping out the embedded cups during severe wind periods. That explains the old-style three-foot flagsticks.

The seventeenth plays uphill over dunes to a plateau green that steeply falls off to the lake on the right. The right-side pin looked to be sitting in Lake Michigan. There are few courses on the Great Lakes that render the golfer awestruck. It may be the best all-around golfing experience in the state. You should have this course on your bucket list. If You Go: Course Info - Arcadia Bluffs includes the original eighteen holes on Lake Michigan designed by Warren Henderson and Rick Smith in 1999 as a seaside links course. The new South Course is 1 mile south but inland, a simpler links courses designed by Dana Fry and Jason Straka. Fees - Peak $215, replay after 4pm $140. Caddies: $65-125 including tip. Replay $110. Yardages - Five sets of tees from 5024 yards to 7300 yards. Location - Arcadia, Michigan on Lake Michigan. Fifty miles southwest of Traverse City, Michigan - a traditional northern Michigan golf vacation base location. Five hours northwest of Detroit, Michigan, and six hours along the Lake Michigan coastline from Chicago, Illinois.

As with many overseas links courses, the routing is unconventional. There are five

Pureed Vegetable Dip ByParisaZ.Ambwani,Residentsince389 1 Serves 6-8 • 1½ cups parsley, washed, pat dried, finely chopped • 1 small eggplant, peeled, diced • 1 leek stalk, washed, pat dried, finely chopped • 2 carrots, peeled, diced • ½ cup water • 2 tablespoons lemon zest • ¼ teaspoon sea salt OR to taste • 1 dash black pepper, freshly ground • 1 ½ cup spinach or baby bok choy (green leaves), washed, pat-dried, chopped • 2 tablespoons olive oil Garnish: Lemon slice and mint sprig In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients except spinach and olive oil (parsley, eggplant, leek, carrots, water, lemon zest, salt, and pepper). Cover the saucepan. Bring the contents to a simmer. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until eggplant is tender, over medium heat. Add spinach and simmer for 2 more minutes.

Let it cool for 2 minutes. Place all ingredients including olive oil in food processor or blender. Blend contents for 1 minute or until pureed. Garnish with lemon slice and mint sprig. Serve with crackers. Note: Parsley is a well-known herb that goes back millennia. The aroma and taste of fresh parsley is mild and subtle; it can be an accompaniment to most dishes (like omelets, scrambled eggs, mashed-potatoes, dips, soups, etc.) Its benefits in culinary are numerous; it can be good for digestion, and to relieve flatulence. Green parsley leaves are, mineral rich, including calcium, potassium, and magnesium as well as vitamins A, and C. The peak season starts in mid spring. Is there room in your heart for a Diabetic Alert Dog-in-Training?

GraceandEAC Ophelia are partners withsuperpowersas they manage Grace’s Type 1 diabetes.

ByVictoriaBriskin,DevelopmentDirector,EarlyAlertCanines Photography by Brady Thomas Photography

F

or more than a decade, Early Alert Canines (EAC) has advanced its mission to improve the health, safety, and well-being of people with insulin-dependent diabetes through partnerships with certified low blood sugar alert dogs. EAC was founded as a response to a growing need for Diabetic Alert Dogs and a particularly unmet need for families with young diabetic children. EAC believes that Service Dogs should be housed in a warm, loving environment, which means each of their dogs goes to a foster home every night. EAC provides training and supplies for fosters and offers short-term, long-term, and transitional home options. They work with each foster to find a schedule that suits their availability. “EAC has been a great organization to volunteer with. The staff has just been so kind and fun and we love the dogs. We love supporting EAC and it’s been fantastic. For anyone considering fostering for EAC, I would say it is a wonderful opportunity. It is a win-win situation for all. It is such a wonderful program and the work the dogs do literally saves their person’s life. The dog has a very big, important purpose, and you become part of that,” shares a long-time foster.

EACOpheliaprovides the life-saving supportofaDiabetic AlertDogtoher partner Grace

In addition to fostering, lending your professional expertise is a great way to support EAC. They are in search of volunteers to help with fundraising, marketing, and events. Brady Thomas is an international award-winning photographer whose landmark studio is located in Benicia, CA. She recently volunteered her time to capture the unique story of an 11-year-old and her Diabetic Alert Dog. “Clients often come to me to help them celebrate and document a milestone: A special birthday, anniversary, graduation, adoption, engagement, pregnancy, retirement, accomplishment, or the simple beauty of a relationship. I was inspired to assist EAC to tell the story of the very special partnership between a child and her Diabetic Alert Dog. This organization is doing deeply important work for clients who live with insulin-dependent diabetes, and before I met them, I had no idea that Diabetic Alert Dogs even existed! The dogs are matched with clients very carefully and as I understand it, as soon as this duo was paired they bonded immediately, and ever since, the dog has been saving this young girl’s life every single day,” shares Brady. EAC relies on donations and sponsorship to fund its programs, believing that any client who needs their service should have access without significant barriers. Their annual Summer Virtual Walk will be held the weekend of June 3-5, 2022, and people are invited to participate and walk from anywhere in the community! More information can be found on their website: www.EarlyAlertCanines.org. Or visit them on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or Twitter. Rattlesnake Safety in the Regional Parks ByJenVanya,EastBayRegionalParkDistrict

W

ith this year’s early spring, Park District staff and visitors have observed the re-emergence of snakes – most notably rattlesnakes – seen periodically along the park’s trails that make up their natural habitat. When the weather gets warm, snakes come out to explore their environment, which can lead to more encounters with humans and dogs. The East Bay Regional Park District is advising that the public take snake safety precautions when visiting Regional Parks. Safety Tips for Visiting Regional Parks 1. Avoid hiking alone so you have help in case of emergency. (Per local health orders, hike only with members of your immediate household during COVID-19) 2. Scan the ground ahead of you as you walk, jog, or ride. Stay on trails and avoid walking in tall grass. 3. Look carefully around and under logs and rocks before sitting down. 4. Avoid placing your hands or feet where you cannot see clearly. 5. Keep leashed pets on designated trails and away from snakes if they see one. (All dogs should be on-leash at all times, in all parks during COVID-19) 6. Bring plenty of water for yourself and your pets as drinking fountains are temporarily closed. Many parks do not have a direct water supply. What to Do If You See a Rattlesnake Leave it alone - do not try to capture or harm it. All park wildlife is protected by law. If you see a snake on a trail, wait for it to cross and do not approach. Then move carefully and slowly away. What to Do If Bitten by a Snake 1. If bitten by a rattlesnake, stay calm and send someone to call 911. Remain calm by lying down with the affected limb lower than the heart. Getting medical attention quickly is critical - do not spend time on tourniquets, “sucking,” or snake bite kits. If you are by yourself, walk calmly to the nearest source of help to dial 911. Do not run. 2. If bitten by any other kind of snake, wash the wound with soap and water or an antiseptic and seek medical attention.

Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses

3.

If you are not sure what kind of snake bit you, check the bite for two puncture marks (in rare cases one puncture mark) associated with intense, burning pain. This is typical of a rattlesnake bite. Other snakebites may leave multiple teeth marks without associated burning pain.

Snakes are an important resource in the natural environment. They are prime controlling agents of rodents, insects, and other reptile populations. Enjoy them from afar and leave them where they are found. It is illegal to collect, kill, or remove any plants or animals from the East Bay Regional Park District. Please help us to protect wildlife and their environment for present and future generations. Additional information is available at ebparks.org/ SnakeSafety or download a PDF version of our Common Snakes brochure. The East Bay Regional Park District is the largest regional park system in the nation, comprising 73 parks, 55 miles of shoreline, and over 1,300 miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and environmental education. The Park District receives more than 25 million visits annually throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The HOX Swim Team Updates ByCoachSeanQuakenbush

W

e cannot believe that it is June already and that our swimmers already have completed Time Trials and have a couple swim meets under their caps for the season. We are in full swim season. That means swim meets happening most Saturdays and Wednesdays with practices during the day and in between all that, all our HOX social stuff! June 6th is the date that HOX moves to morning practice. June 6th is also the day for our team picture AND spirit day.

HOX families kicked off the season with an amazing Parent Auction party in May. HOX parents came out and partied like it was 1999. After several years of things being on the subdued side because of covid, the HOX crew was ready to let loose. Record numbers in attendance and some outstanding items to bid on, HOX families did not disappoint. Thank you to the HOX Board for all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to put it all together and make it such a great and successful event. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for the HOX social events! The 8U and mini HOX party is happening poolside on June 13th. Mini HOX starts on June 13th, and that’s a day you don’t want to miss if you have a little one that wants to learn how to swim like the big kids. Please reach out to Coach Sean for more mini HOX info seanq@blackhawkcc.org. We can’t forget about the moms! June 23rd is the date for the HOX Moms night out. More info to come. Soccer Skill:

Juggling By Kat Beasley

I’ve never been near a soccer ball that I didn’t want to flick up and start to juggle. I like to juggle on the top of my foot, knees and head while counting how many touches I can get before it falls. Follow the steps below and you can learn how to juggle too!

the surface of your quads is the best way to keep the ball from flying into your neighbor’s yard.

When I juggle, I start off flicking the ball up with my feet. For now, start with the ball in your hands. You can always learn how to flick the ball up using your feet later.

Repeat this a few times to understand how the ball bounces off your leg.

To get started, lift your knee up towards your chest and stop at belly button height. Then, hold the ball over your lifted knee. Next, drop the ball on top of the quadricep on the lifted leg. Using

Sophie - T var Foster Dog Program Meet Sophie, a friendly, affectionate, mellow 20 pound terrier mix. She has beautiful baby blue eyes and a lovely white coat and with her adorable set of ears - one stand up and one flopped over - it is hard not to smile when you see her. Sophie enjoys her walks, savoring the sights and smells of the neighborhood and beyond. Sophie is hearing impaired - but that doesn’t get in her way one little bit. She’s very polite in the house and loves to be petted. She really is a great little dog and will make a wonderful addition to your home. Sophie is spayed, microchipped and fully vaccinated.

TVAR gives deserving animals like Sophie another chance by taking them into foster care. All TVAR dogs live in foster homes till adopted. Foster families get to know each dog’s personality and needs in a home setting- allowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs and adopters thrive!

Tri-Valley Animal R escue (T VAR ) - Giving them Another Chance

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs. All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens and the Public.

Denuvo - T var Kitten Foster Program

When we met this loving cat at the shelter, we immediately took her into one of our dedicated foster homes; she was about to give birth to a litter of kittens. We called her Denuvo - and she had 5 little babies soon after we took her in. She is such a loving cat - she’ll walk right up to you and ask to have her face scratched. She is mildmannered and unfazed by anything that happens around her. She loves being picked up - and even allows us to trim her claws - without any complaint. While quietly curious, she does like to be wherever her people are - and is very interested in knowing what you are doing. Denuvo is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated and tested negative for FIV/FeLV and looking for her forever home. TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes.

Cybersecurity Tips that Anyone Can Apply ByAnthonyRegina,CEOatBayAreaITSolutions,Inc.

How to be realistic about your online presence

Understand that you’re an attractive target for cyber criminals. If you have money (doesn’t matter how much), data (usernames, passwords, documents, emails, etc.) or a place to work, you’re going to be targeted. It’s not even personal, as cyber criminals automate most of their attacks. Don’t ever say “it can’t happen to me.”

Should you plug that in?

Careful on what you plug into your computer. Never use a USB whose source you don’t know! It can be infected with malware that can even resist formatting. Don’t let curiosity get the best of you.

Get your 2-FA on

Use 2-factor authentication everywhere you can. Set it up to receive authentication codes via sms or on an authenticator app. More layers = More security!

Keep it in check

Check your bank statements on a weekly basis (your online banking can help you do that easily). Look for suspicious activity and, if any, alert your bank, change all passwords related to that account and make sure to activate every security measure available. Financial malware lurks just around the corner.

• •

Use a reliable antivirus Add another layer of security with a product that protects you from attacks that antivirus can’t block

Moms and Dads, no photos of your kids please

Dear parents, please don’t post photos of your children on your social accounts. First of all, think about when those kids will grow up and their whole lives will be available publicly, will be there to use against them, to shame them. This is most likely to happen among teenagers, a period when kids are extremely harsh with each other. Second, you never know where those pics will end up. There’ve been cases of private Facebook groups where people were sharing other people’s kid pics and making fun of them. Or, even worse: pedophiles. Imagine what could happen if a pedophile would put together all the information you are willingly sharing on your social network: the area where you live, your kid’s school, the park where your kid plays, etc.

Ransomware 101

Ransomware is one of the biggest cyber threats out there. What it does is it encrypts ALL your data and locks you out. It also asks for a ransom, typically between $200 and $500, to give you de decryption key. To protect yourself against ransomware, do this: • • • • •

Do frequent data backups (in multiple locations) Don’t keep vital information only on your computer Never access .zip attachments in e-mails from unknown senders Don’t click links in e-mails from unknown senders Keep your OS and apps up to date at all times

he last 3 years have been the worst in decades for rainfall in Northern California. Many of us are looking for easy ways to keep our outdoor spaces green and vibrant. Succulents are the answer. With over 10,000 varieties there are plenty of choices in color, shape and size. Succulents are a garden favorite for a good reason – they are beautiful and tough. Since I am a novice succulent gardener, I talked to a person who knows more and grows more than I could ever hope to, Bloomers President Cindy Inloes.

She began her love affair with succulents quite innocently when a friend who sold a house gifted her two jade plants. Soon Cindy was following various groups on Instagram from The Succulent Farmers to one-of-a-kind growers in California. She was addicted to the beauty, variety, and resilience of these funny little (and not so little) plants. Today she has a front and back yard artfully filled with hundreds of plants. If you ask, she will share her garden tips and generously offer you a cutting or two of a favorite plant. She also knows the secret places to find the beautiful and unusual plants. If you have an interest in creating a beautiful space filled with succulents, she is the person you want to get to know. The Northern California Corvette Association ByDavidTom,ResidentSince90 1

T

he Northern California Corvette Association (“NCCA”), America’s oldest Corvette Club, is the answer for you. The organization began in 1957, just a few years after the Corvette was introduced and has been coming to the Blackhawk Museum for more than a decade. Vette Magic 45 on August 8, 2021, displayed Corvettes from all 8 generations, gave the NCCA an opportunity to raise funds for charity and award trophies in numerous categories. The NCCA combines the natural enjoyment of Corvette ownership with social interaction among Corvette owners. Do you have a passion for America’s sports car and have an interest in autocross, drag races, track racing, car shows or road trips? Check out the NCCA calendar page. There is sure to be an event for you.

The Grill Father ByToriDraegerPaff,Draeger’sMarket

T

he nickname “the Godfather” conveys power, the sense of leadership in a family. Similarly, the nickname “Grill Father,” conveys leadership - over the grill! To become a true Grill Father, there are just a few simple tools, tips, and tricks to apply. There are tons of other fun gadgets for grilling, from special grill skillets and grill woks to flavor injectors and basting brushes, but a good Grill Father knows the importance of a solid foundation. Whether your grill is charcoal or propane, there are a few tools you should keep on hand for a successful barbecue. Keep a grill mitt or pot holder on hand (and maybe a fire extinguisher!) - safety first! Next, double check your fuel: make sure there is enough propane or charcoal to finish the job. Long handled tongs or a long handled spatula are key because they allow you to turn your food without piercing and releasing precious flavorful juices. Lastly, a reliable thermometer is very important for determining proper doneness. The next thing a true master of the grill needs is excellent, highquality fare to grill. Conscientious choice for freshness, quality and flavor ultimately leads to an amazing final product - be it vegetable or animal or other! Vegetarian options have expanded widely as many are looking for healthier options. Draeger’s Blackhawk Produce Manager Gil Duran recommends organic corn on the grill: “it’s always good, and we source it locally from Brentwood.” Other suggestions from Gil include red or yellow onion, tomatoes, and red or green bell peppers. If you’re looking to branch out, however, organic Californian zucchini, Californian eggplant, organic avocados, and even locally grown artichokes are grill-worthy veggies. For the Grill Father who lives the pescatarian lifestyle, locally fished King salmon, Alaskan line-caught halibut, West-Coast caught whole snapper, and line-caught Chilean sea bass are all great options. Draeger’s Director of Meat, Fish and Poultry Fernando Esparza reminds: “don’t forget about barbecue oysters!”

Looking for something to test your Grill Father skills? Throw a home-made Draeger’s pizza on the grill and heat it up for a few minutes, imparting a special smoky, crispy flavor. Quesadillas can also be made over the barbecue, simply create your favorite combo and let the flames do the work. Lastly, if you really want to test your grill abilities, pick up a wheel of brie (with the rind completely intact) from Draeger’s Cheese and Charcuterie department. Lightly brush the outside of the brie with olive oil, and gently grill the cheese over indirect heat on the grill.

To the meat of the matter: Grilling a loin-cut, well-marbled New York Steak or rib-cut Prime rib steak is the epitome of barbecue mastery. Or, ask Draeger’s superb journeymen butchers to spatchcock a chicken for you and barbecue that bird with a foilwrapped brick.

Mastery over the grill does not come over night. It takes practice and knowledge of how to cook a wide variety of items. What does come rather quickly is the enjoyment a Grill Father receives when he sees satisfied, happy looks on the faces of his family as they savor the fruit of his hard work.

What Causes Hair Loss in Women? ByDr.StephenJ.RonanMDFACS,BlackhawkPlasticSurgeryandMedSpa

F

emale pattern hair loss (FPHL) is also widely known as Androgenetic Alopecia and is the most common form of hair loss in women around the world. The onset of symptoms can vary, but two key times in a woman’s life, puberty and menopause, often act as triggers for an increase in FPHL being reported to clinics and doctors. There are three types of hair loss (alopecia) commonly reported in women, which can be the cause of a variety of factors from genetics to hair care practices or anything that triggers the immune system to attack hair follicles. While men tend to notice balding as a receding hairline and specific bald spots, FPHL in women tend to appear more as generalized hair loss with thinning all over the scalp. The three most common types of hair loss include: Alopecia Areata is patchy hair loss that happens suddenly on the head or body. It typically begins with one or more round bald patches that may or may not overlap. Cicatricial Alopecia is a group of conditions that causes irreversible hair loss through scarring. Hair falls out and the follicle is replaced with scar tissue. Traumatic Alopecia causes hair to fall out as a result of hair styling practices. The hair shaft may break after using hot combs, blow dryers, straighteners, or certain chemicals to dye or straighten hair. Some medical conditions lead directly to hair loss, whether through disruption to hormones, like with thyroid issues; scarring from skin conditions, like ringworm; or autoimmune disorders, like celiac disease, where the body attacks itself. Hair loss caused by stress or hormonal changes, like pregnancy or menopause, may not require any treatment. Instead, the loss will stop on its own after the body adjusts. Nutrient deficiencies also do not often require medical treatment beyond supplements unless, the deficiency is caused by an underlying health condition.

Any medical conditions that lead to hair loss should be treated directly to address the full condition, not just its symptoms. There are a number of surgical and non-surgical hair restoration treatment options to combat and correct hair loss caused by female-pattern baldness. The best way to determine if you are a suitable candidate for any of these procedures is to schedule a complimentary consultation where we can review the options and answer all of your questions. If you are interested in learning more, please contact our office at 925.736.5757. We look forward to hearing from you!

Crafts Corner

June Craft: Personalize Journals and Sketchbooks By Michelle Barry, Resident since 2018

I

love seeing people exchange handmade gifts. I love that someone took the time to create something just for that person. They are usually very thoughtful and often very personalized gifts. Journals and sketchbooks can be made to be very personal. They are not difficult to uplift into something very beautiful. You can add your personal touch to them and alter them to fit the personality of the person you’re giving it to. Some examples are: A cloth covered journal. This one is a kit I purchased through Pretty Little Fabrics and Trims in the UK: https://www.prettyfabricsandtrims.co.uk/ It is embroidered and the cover is sewn together. A black journal that can be embellished with paint pens. A craft paper covered journal can be stamped, painted or inked with various designs. The possibilities are endless. Although this isn’t a journal or a sketchbook, while I was writing this article I remembered I gave my daughter some white blank hardcover books to draw in. My daughter, when she was little, would decorate the covers of white, blank, hardcover books by the dozens. She would create whole stories in them with graphic covers. I purchased them from: https://www.barebooks.com/books/

A Message from County Librarian Alison McKee

Your Local Library

By County Librarian, Alison McKee

I

am thrilled to share that at long last, in-person storytimes will return to library branches beginning in June. All in-person programs were paused at the beginning of the pandemic, and we could not be happier to be bringing them back. COVID-19 brought many challenges to the Library, including having to rethink the way we delivered storytimes and other programs. I am proud of how quickly library staff transitioned to online programming and the amazing creativity they have shown in both streaming and recorded storytimes over the last two years. For many staff members, planning and hosting programs is one of their favorite parts of the job. Implementing interesting and culturally diverse programs and interacting with the people who attend is such a rich way to connect with our communities and for our communities to connect with the Library and each other. Staff have

Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses

been eager for the return of in-person events and we are starting with storytimes since they are such an important part of early childhood education. Storytime is an important way to introduce and reinforce the early literacy skills of talking, singing, reading, writing and playing, and is a lot of fun too! Early literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they actually start school. It is the foundation of preparing children to get ready to learn to read and is especially important for children who do not attend preschool. We can’t wait to start seeing you and your family singing, laughing, and learning at storytimes this summer. Days and times for in-person storytime vary at each library branch, so please check our website or call your local library for the most accurate information.

The best is yet to come for

2022 Graduates! ByStevePadis,PadisJewelryandThe ForevermarkBoutiqueatBroadwayPlaza

G

raduation is a time of celebrating achievement and new beginnings. For such a significant milestone, in some of the most challenging of times, a gift of fine jewelry will be a lasting reminder of a graduate’s accomplishment. If you have a loved one graduating this year, here are a few graduation jewelry gift ideas for the class of 2022.

Diamond Stud Earrings & Pendants

Consider a pair of classic diamond stud earrings or diamond pendant. Diamonds symbolize endurance and inspire confidence in all who wear them, making them the perfect understated accessory for upcoming interviews. Even the smallest diamonds will make her feel like she’s wearing a piece of luxury. We have a large variety of diamond earrings and necklaces in a variety of price ranges; find your perfect gift with one of our diamond experts.

Watches

For men and women who like timepieces, select a gift that is both functional and fashionable. A quality watch is a classic choice for a graduation gift. A fine watch will never go out of style and it instantly dresses up any outfit. Michelle, Breitling, Tag Heuer and Bulova watches, all available at our stores, are excellent selections that will last your graduate a lifetime. As an added bonus, they’ll have no excuse to be late for their first day on the job!

Cuff Links & Tie Bars

Cuff links are appropriate in many situations. For the graduate about to enter the suit-and-tie world, cuff links and tie bards will be needed for upcoming interviews as well as daily office wear. They can also be purchased in school colors for those who want to show school allegiance even after their days on campus are over. A set of personalized cuff links or a tie bar will make him look sharp and selected to match his individual style and personality.

Vintage or Heirloom Jewelry

In many families, graduation marks a rite-of-passage, and is the perfect opportunity to pass down a piece of heirloom jewelry. From grandmother’s ring to a great-uncle’s watch, heirloom pieces are full of history and memories, and there’s no better time to pass them along than during a family celebration. Of course, many graduates appreciate cash or gift cards to help with expenses as they start the next phase of their lives. A gift of fine jewelry, however, will be appreciated for years to come and perhaps even become an heirloom itself.

A Gift from Padis Jewelry to Graduates

To the class of 2022, hats off to your accomplishment! We are celebrating YOU throughout the month of June at all of our locations including our DeBeers Forevermark Boutique in Walnut Creek, our downtown Napa location and all three of our San Francisco stores. Simply visit one of our locations with your school ID and let us know you’re graduating and you can select a “mystery mortarboard gift box” with prizes ranging from Bulova’s new “The Best is Yet to Come” Frank Sinatra Timepiece Collection to fine jewelry and gift cards.
