Dear Neighbors,

June means summer vacations, backyard barbecues, seeing friends, flip-flops and a little reprieve from the jump-out-of-bed-and-hurry-up pace of the school year

Even if it has been a long time since you experienced the rush of getting children up and out the door for school, I don’t think the slower feeling that June brings with it ever fades. The beginning of summer gives us permission to slow down and take in the sights, sounds and smells that mean summer in Blackhawk and less traffic on our local roads.

June is also the time we honor our dads and celebrate Father’s Day on June 16th.

Blackhawk Living Magazine is your neighborhood magazine and in this issue you’ll meet your neighbor, Lisa Loftus. Lisa has figured out a way to channel her creative energy into home staging. We hope you enjoy her story.

Warmly,

Megan Scott

Transforming

Spaces and Inspiring Dreams:

Lisa Loftus Meet

Very few Blackhawk residents can say they have had the honor of meeting the Queen of England, but Lisa Loftus can. In 1983, when Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip visited California for a holiday, a select group of children of English descent were chosen to meet Her Majesty in San Francisco. Lisa was among those chosen, and the memory of that day remains vivid in her mind she says, “I recall wearing a beautiful new plaid dress my mom had bought for me from Sears, paired with white tights and black patent leather shoes. Despite feeling nervous, I mustered the courage to curtsy when the Queen extended her hand. It was an unforgettable moment in my life, one that I will cherish forever.”

A California Bay Area native, Lisa was born in San Francisco and briefly lived in Pacifica before her parents settled down in Newark, where she was raised alongside two older brothers. Lisa graduated from Newark Memorial High School and felt inspired to follow a creative career path from a young age. “Growing up surrounded by the creativity of both my grandmother and father has been an endless source of inspiration for me. Their creative talents ignited my own creative spark from a young age, shaping my path and guiding me towards a life filled with artistic expression. Their influence on my creative journey has been invaluable,” says Lisa.

From the moment Lisa first held a makeup brush in her hands, she knew it was her calling. “After high school, I made Pleasanton my home and embarked on a career in makeup artistry. I started at Nordstrom Pleasanton and freelanced as a makeup artist for weddings and special events. During this journey, I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Stompro, a renowned plastic surgeon in Blackhawk. In the early 2000s, he invited me to join his team. Although it meant transitioning away from the makeup brush, I was equally thrilled to explore the world of cosmetic and plastic surgery. Eventually, I became a part of the cosmetic surgery practice of Dr. Stompro & Dr. Cheng in Blackhawk,” says Lisa.

The year 2009 marked a significant milestone for Lisa, a move to Boca Raton in South Florida. “Two years after my move, in 2011, my daughter London was born. Despite being in Florida, my heart always longed to return home to the Bay Area and raise London closer to my family and friends. After thoughtful deliberation, I chose Blackhawk as our new home because of its lively community, welcoming residents, and excellent schools. Since then, Blackhawk has truly felt like our home,” says Lisa.

After returning to Blackhawk, Lisa initially worked part-time at Dr. Stompro and Dr. Cheng’s plastic surgery office. Recognizing the fleeting nature of her daughter’s elementary school years, she made the decision to resign and actively participate in her daughter’s school, activities, and day-to-day life. ”I’m so glad I did, too. Some of the best memories were London’s elementary school years at Tassajara Hills,” says Lisa.

While the pandemic was a tough time for all, it did have a silver lining. Lisa says it gave her some uninterrupted time to seek out a new creative outlet, which led to a new career in home staging. “On 2/22/22, LL Staging and Interiors came to life – a venture I hadn’t planned, but embraced fully. Entering the captivating world of home staging has been nothing short of amazing for me. Home staging allows me to witness the transformative power of design firsthand. Witnessing a once-empty space blossom into a warm and inviting sanctuary is incredibly fulfilling. It’s about creating an emotional connection between the buyer and the property, sparking a vision of their future in that space. In this dynamic and ever-evolving industry, I find endless inspiration and motivation to push the boundaries of creativity. Every project presents a new challenge and an opportunity to innovate, keeping my passion for home staging burning bright. Ultimately, the joy of seeing my clients’ faces light up as they walk into their staged home, is what fuels my love for home staging. It’s more than just decorating spaces; it’s about transforming lives and making dreams a reality.”

When she’s not fully immersed in the world of staging, Lisa says she indulges in a diverse range of activities. “I’m passionate about maintaining my health and fitness, working out at the gym, embarking on exciting day trips, and exploring both domestic and international destinations. Family time and moments of reflection at church hold a special place in my heart, while I also savor the joys of music, lively dinner parties with friends, and trying new local restaurants. I eagerly attend concerts, plays, and street fairs, skiing adventures at Northstar, and find immense joy in the creative pursuit of decorating.”

Being a parent to her daughter London is Lisa’s most important priority. “London embodies kindness, intelligence, and generosity. At the age of 12, she is on the brink of entering the 8th grade at Diablo Vista Middle School. An avid artist

and passionate guitarist, she brings creativity and musicality into our lives. My connection to London, England, where my family roots lie, inspired her name. Despite lacking the distinctive British accent, I cherish this connection dearly. She is not just my daughter; she is a source of endless pride and joy in my life,” says Lisa.

The family is completed by Fiona, a cherished feline companion. Fiona was rescued in Florida under dire circumstances, she was covered in bugs and battling an eye ulcer, barely clinging to life. “Since joining our household, she has transformed into a beacon of happiness and vitality. From her playful rolls, eagerly seeking belly rubs, to her amusing escapades with water, Fiona never fails to elicit laughter and joy. She is a constant reminder of the resilience of the spirit and the immeasurable love that animals bring into our lives,” says Lisa.

Avid Disney enthusiasts, Lisa and London frequented Disney World multiple times a year when they lived in Florida and still try to visit at least once a year. They also hope to visit London, England soon. “I hope that soon we’ll have the chance to explore the beautiful city of London together and create lasting memories,” says Lisa.

The family has called Silver Oak in Blackhawk home since 2017 and say they love the community, “It’s a wonderfully quaint gated community. I have close bonds with all my neighbors. Every month, a group of us moms take turns hosting gatherings at our homes, bringing our families together for drinks, dinner, and plenty of enjoyment. The kids always have a fantastic time. During the summer, we rotate taking the neighborhood kids to the pool. The tight-knit community of Silver Oak is unparalleled in this area. Here, our kids can freely run and play in the streets, and we feel secure knowing that we all watch out for each other. Living in Silver Oak, I genuinely feel like I’ve hit the neighborhood jackpot.”

Reshaping Your Body: The Power of Body Contouring Procedures

Intoday’s world, where the desire for the perfect body shape is widespread, individuals often find themselves grappling with stubborn fat deposits that defy conventional methods of diet and exercise. Fortunately, advancements in body contouring procedures offer effective solutions to address these concerns. Let’s delve into the transformative possibilities offered by tummy tuck surgery and liposuction.

At Blackhawk Plastic Surgery, patients frequently seek abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, for various reasons such as fatty areas, loose skin, and weakened abdominal walls. Over the years, we have completed thousands of tummy tucks, and we were the first practice in the Bay Area to implement the drainless tummy tuck procedure, which minimizes scarring and speeds up recovery times. With our approach, it’s not uncommon for patients to experience noticeable improvements in their midsection contour within weeks of surgery.

Tummy tuck surgery often complements other procedures like high-definition liposuction, enhancing muscular contours for a more sculpted appearance. Liposuction is a good option for individuals grappling with localized fat deposits resistant to traditional methods of reduction. Targeting areas such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, arms, back, and neck, liposuction can offer a sculpted and toned physique unattainable through diet and exercise alone.

Beyond its cosmetic benefits, liposuction and other body contouring procedures often contribute to a much more positive body image and heightened self-confidence. By addressing specific body concerns, patients undergo a transformative journey, bidding farewell to stubborn fat, folds, and loose skin and embracing newfound confidence.

Whether considering a tummy tuck or liposuction or other body contouring procedures, individuals are encouraged to embark on their journey with confidence, knowing that transformative results are within reach.

The HOX Swim Team

Recently, the vibrant community of the Blackhawk Swim Team (HOX) came together for their annual fundraiser, hosted at Blackhawk Country Club. This fundraiser serves as a cornerstone for supporting the HOX in numerous ways, from ensuring best in class swim meet equipment and technology to covering league registration and meet fees. The atmosphere was brimming with excitement and camaraderie as HOX supporters gathered to celebrate under the banner of this year’s theme, “Chasing Gold.” Much like the spirited Olympians visiting Paris this summer, the HOX team is fervently pursuing excellence as they embark on a season filled with thrilling meets and boundless opportunities to shine.

Over the past three decades, the HOX have blossomed in both size and spirit. From humble beginnings with just 50 swimmers in the early 1980s, the HOX family has flourished into a vibrant community of nearly 300 dedicated swimmers. The journey hasn’t just been one of growth in numbers; it’s been a testament to an unwavering commitment to excellence. The team has held league titles in the esteemed Valley Swim Association (VSA) and consistently ranks amongst the top six at the fiercely competitive County Meet.

Amidst all these remarkable achievements, it’s essential to highlight the core values that truly define the HOX swim team. Central to their mission is not just winning, but the dedicated focus on teaching swim technique, nurturing a culture where friendships flourish, and ensuring that every child experiences the sheer joy and excitement of summer swimming. These pillars are the heartbeat of the HOX team, enriching lives and shaping futures both in and out of the pool.

Good luck to the HOX this year as they chase that gold!

It’s Not About The Food: Unpacking the Emotional Reasons Behind Weight Gain

For most of my life, I believed the narrative that my weight gain stemmed from an insatiable sweet tooth and a weakness for French bread with butter. I pictured myself as a powerless bystander to my own body, forever locked in a battle against cravings. But years of selfdiscovery revealed a different truth: my weight wasn’t about food at all, but about emotions.

As an emotional eater, I turned to food for comfort, a strategy that probably sounds familiar to many. Stressful day at work? Ice cream. Night time loneliness? Cookies. Boredom on a rainy afternoon? Mindless snacking. Food became my emotional Band-Aid, a way to numb or suppress difficult feelings. The problem? Numbing doesn’t solve problems. It just adds unwanted pounds and leaves the real issues unaddressed.

The turning point for me came with the realization that I wanted food when I wasn’t even hungry. What I was really craving was the temporary comfort that food provided, but it never addressed the underlying cause of my discomfort.

So, I began to focus on my thoughts that were creating my emotions – the good, the bad, and the downright ugly. It wasn’t easy. Years of avoidance had left me out of touch with my thoughts and the resulting feelings. But slowly, I learned to identify and acknowledge them, and then find healthy ways to manage them. Yoga became a tool for selfreflection, journaling helped process difficult feelings, and spending time with loved ones offered peace.

This shift wasn’t about deprivation or punishment. It was about selfcompassion and understanding. I learned to celebrate my non-scale victories – the ability to navigate a stressful situation without reaching for a brownie, the courage to have a difficult conversation instead of stuffing my feelings down with chips.

Here’s the truth: for most of us, weight isn’t about a love affair with food; it’s about an underlying emotional issue. It’s the comfort eating provides, the distraction it offers from what’s truly bothering us. If you suspect emotional eating might be playing a role in your weight struggles, know this: you’re not alone. And the good news is, there’s a path to freedom. It starts with acknowledging your emotions and finding healthy ways to navigate them. Remember, you are worthy of feeling your emotions – all of them – and developing healthier coping mechanisms. Let’s ditch the food fight and focus on true emotional well-being, one feeling at a time.

To begin your journey towards managing emotional eating, here are some steps...

Identify your emotional triggers: Notice situations, feelings, or even times of day that lead you to crave comfort food. Does stress make you reach for sweets? Does boredom in the evenings lead to mindless snacking? Pay attention to patterns to understand your emotional cues.

Develop healthier responses: Emotional eating is a temporary fix, and often leaves you feeling worse in the long run. Develop a plan to recognize and address these emotions without resorting to food; it will provide you with a long-term solution to manage your emotions in a way that benefits your overall well-being.

Allow and Process Negative Emotions Without Judgement: Allowing yourself to feel your emotions, even the negative ones, is the first step towards processing them effectively. When you judge yourself for feeling a certain way, it adds another layer of stress and can fuel more emotional eating.

Remember, change takes time and self-compassion is key. Celebrate your non-scale victories and focus on building a healthier relationship with both food, and yourself.

WHY BRANDING

IS MORE IMPACTFUL

Than Direct Response Advertising

Before deciding how to spend your advertising budget, it’s important to understand the distinction between branding and direct response advertising. Branding is all about building your brand’s equity over time, while direct response advertising aims to achieve instant gratification in a short period of time.1 While both can be used in tandem to create an impactful strategy for your local business, branding is far more capable of winning over the hearts and minds of potential customers. Let’s dive into the details:

▶ RETURN ON INVESTMENT

In some instances, direct response advertising tools like coupon books or mass mailers will get a few customers in the door. In the majority of cases, however, these one-time strategies fizzle out and don’t have an impact on your bottom line. Branding is different because it presents the opportunity to build your brand and inform your audience. It may take a couple weeks or months to see the results, but branding is the best way to earn the trust of the community. Focus on the end goal rather than gauging your campaign’s success on the immediate returns.

▶ LONG-LASTING LOYALTY

Creating trust, loyalty and brand recognition in the community is the key to long-term success as a local business. A coupon or flash sale might work on occasion, but those aren’t sustainable growth strategies. Instead, explore content marketing opportunities that allow you to tell your story while consistently reaching an effective audience. Branding is all about staying top-of-mind with potential customers. Over time, as your brand becomes more recognizable and trustworthy, the results will come through in a big way.

▶ BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

Local businesses are an essential piece to the unique fabric of every community. Use your marketing efforts to share your story and build relationships with those who call your community home. Even if some of your audience isn’t in need of your products or services right now, let them know that you’ll be there when the time comes. They’ll be more likely to give you a visit over the competition because you’ve always been there.

The East Bay Regional Park District Issues a Rattlesnake Advisory

The warmer weather means snakes become more active. Rattlesnakes are native to California and occur in a variety of wildland habitats, as well as in rural and urban areas. Rattlesnakes are more active in warm weather, which can lead to more encounters with humans and dogs, especially along trails and roads. Visitors are encouraged to keep snake safety precautions in mind when visiting East Bay Regional Parks throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons.

Snakes are an important resource in the natural environment. They are prime controlling agents of rodents and other reptile populations. Enjoy them from afar and leave them where they are found. Collecting, killing, or removing any plants or animals from the Park District is illegal. Please help protect all wildlife and their environment.

Rattlesnake

Safety Tips

1. Avoid hiking alone so you have help in case of emergency.

2. Scan the ground ahead of you as you walk, jog, or ride.

3. Stay on trails and avoid walking in tall grass.

4. Look carefully around and under logs and rocks before sitting down.

5. Listen for the buzz of a rattlesnake’s rattle warning you it is there.

6. Avoid placing your hands or feet where you cannot see clearly.

7. For maximum safety, consider keeping your dog on a leash.

What to Do If You See a Rattlesnake

Leave it alone – do not try to capture or harm it. All native wildlife is protected by law, and it is safest to leave it alone. If you see a snake, do not approach. Move carefully and slowly away or around it while giving it plenty of space.

What to Do If Bitten by a Snake

If bitten by a rattlesnake, stay calm and have someone call 911. Remain calm by lying down with the affected limb lower than the heart. Getting medical attention quickly is critical - do not use tourniquets, “sucking,” or snake bite kits. If you are by yourself, walk calmly to the nearest source of help to dial 911. Do not run.

If bitten by any other type of snake, wash the wound with soap and water or an antiseptic and seek medical attention.

If you are unsure what kind of snake bit you, check the bite for two puncture marks (in rare cases one puncture mark) associated with intense, burning pain. This is typical of a rattlesnake bite. Other snakebites may leave multiple teeth marks without associated burning pain.

You do not need to identify the specific type of rattlesnake to receive the correct antivenom. The Northern Pacific rattlesnake is the species found in East Bay Regional Parks.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue Giving Them Another Chance

FOSTER DOG PROGRAM - Meet Buddy - Foster Dog Looking for his Forever Home

Buddy is a fully-vaccinated 60-pound male black lab mix now in foster care. Buddy was apparently dumped in Livermore and ran loose for at least six weeks before he was trapped and brought to the shelter. He was too scared to be put up for adoption, but two TVAR volunteers (who became his foster parents) got to know Buddy slowly, taking him out for walks for over a month and established enough trust with him to bring him home to live with them. Buddy lives with two other dogs and a fiveyear old child. He is calm and gentle, but still very shy with strangers. His foster parents feel he is now ready to meet new people and eventually start the next phase of his life. It will take a patient family - but you will be rewarded by a gentle, loving soul who doesn’t deserve the hand he was dealt.

You can see more about Buddy by going to www.tvar.org and clicking on Find Your Pet.

All of TVAR’s foster dogs go directly from our foster parents’ homes into their permanent homes. All are vaccinated, neutered or spayed and microchipped before they go to their new forever homes.

FOSTER KITTEN PROGRAM -Meet Queen/Mama Sasha and her Babies

Sasha, a very young cat, nearly found her forever home from the shelter. However, the day before her adoption was finalized and she was scheduled for spaying, Sasha unexpectedly gave birth to three beautiful and healthy boys. This surprise meant Sasha was not quite ready for her forever home. Instead, she and her kittens went into foster care, where she could care for her babies until they were ready for adoption. Fortunately, TVAR volunteers ensured that Sasha and her kittens had a loving and warm environment to thrive in. Sasha was placed in a caring Tri-Valley Animal Rescue foster home, where she will remain until she and her kittens are ready for adoption. Sasha is a very loving and attentive mother cat. She constantly chirps at her babies and her human caretakers. She is now able to relax while she raises her babies and waits patiently for them to grow so they can all find wonderful forever homes.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR)Giving them Another Chance.

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving hundreds and hundreds of animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating over 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - and mommas and babies like Sasha who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes.

TVAR’S Foster Dog and Puppy Program and Foster Kitten and Foster Bottle Baby Programs pull animals directly from the local Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love, medical care, and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. Our fosters get to know their foster animals - allowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs, puppies and kittens - and adopters - thrive!

We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter socializing and working with the Cats, Kittens, Puppies and Dogs and helping introduce these deserving animals to the Public.

Blackhawk Author Publishes A Memoir,

Available at Rakestraw Bookstore in Danville

Whenwe moved to Blackhawk from France, in the mid-80s, not only did we have longhorns for neighbors, in Saddleback, but other than golf, the community pool and courts at the Tennis Villas were the main activity center. It was still the beginning of Blackhawk Country Club; there was no Falls Golf Course, Blackhawk Plaza, or Tassajara Crossing.

Little did I know that we’d retire in Vancouver, BC. (Jim is Canadian). Since then, spending time with our daughter in Blackhawk and son in Diablo has allowed us to enjoy enduring friendships.

Little did I know, again, that I’d write a book in which the first chapter is set in Blackhawk and Danville. The story then unfolds mostly in France and the Geneva area. Still, the quiet backyard of Live Oak Court was a place of inspiration, meditation, and soul searching.

Writing the book also brought back memories of my early years as an expatriate. It made me realize that California’s golden hills and Mount Diablo are forever a part of my life.
