Meet the
Schniegenbergs: Making Each Day A Gift By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
L
ittle did Christina know when she took a trip from her home in San Diego to visit a friend in San Francisco that she would meet her future husband while having a drink at O’Reilly’s Irish Pub. It was 2004 and Christina’s friend happened to go to college with Greg who met them at the pub that night. As soon as Christina and Greg met there was an instant connection. “We both knew there was something there between us, something special, but I lived in San Diego and Greg lived in San Francisco. We didn’t see each other again for a few months, but when we did we knew we didn’t want to go that long without seeing each other again. From that moment on we spoke and emailed everyday and made flights every other weekend back and forth between the two cities. Luckily, flights were $39 each way back then,” says Christina. After a year of long distance dating, in 2005 Christina made the move to Walnut Creek, and Greg and Christina married in 2008 at The Harvest Inn in St. Helena. “We had our perfect wedding in the vineyards, very intimate with only 70 people that played a special role in our lives. We had a live event artist paint the evening and we have that painting hanging in our house to look at and remember forever,” says Christina. Greg grew up in Euclid, Ohio. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Construction Management degree. From a young age he enjoyed building things and knew construction was his calling. His first job after college was with Helix Electric in 2000, and he is still with the same company 20 years later. “One of my favorite sayings is you can’t boil the ocean all at once, you have to do it one cup at a time. In life people make the mistake of setting really big goals and only focus on measuring themselves against it, too often failing to achieve it. What motivates me is winning at achieving a lot of smaller accomplishments every day that will eventually produce exceptional overall results for my team and the company. The most rewarding part of my job is when people are engaged, driven and have pride and purpose in what they do to the point it does not feel like work. We only have so much time to enjoy life, so I put a lot of energy into loving what I do and to lead my team to do the same,” says Greg.
Christina grew up in Niles, Michigan and graduated from Kalamazoo Valley College with a Respiratory Therapy degree. They both moved to San Diego in 2000 and had the same circle of friends, but never met. In 2001, Greg was transferred for work to the Bay Area and Christina followed after their relationship developed. “We moved in together and lived in Walnut Creek from 2005-2010. In 2010, we moved to The Bridges in San Ramon and then finally settled in Blackhawk in 2014,” says Christina. The Schniegenbergs have two children. A seven-year-old daughter, Morgan, and five-year old son, Colton. Christina shares that Morgan suffers from a rare syndrome that has come with many struggles but has made the family stronger and appreciative of every moment they have together, “Our daughter Morgan suffers from a rare catastrophic epilepsy, Dravet Syndrome. We started a charity in her name after her diagnosis, The Morgan Amelia Foundation to improve the lives of all children with this syndrome. We purchase life saving medical equipment for families that are not covered by insurance. Dravet Syndrome affects 1:15,600 people, is extremely debilitating and has a 20 percent mortality rate before adulthood.” Morgan attends the Special Day Classes at Bollinger Canyon Elementary. She is unable to walk or talk but loves her special needs bicycle and the beach. Christina says the family learned of the diagnosis before Morgan’s first birthday, “Morgan’s diagnosis was shocking, to say the least. She had only had three seizures prior to being diagnosed. We had very high hopes that she would overcome this and live a normal life. She was not on any pharmaceuticals for years, her seizures were fairly controlled and she was walking and talking. Then the seizures became uncontrolled and nothing seemed to be working. The more she had, the more skills she lost. From the beginning, we took this as a sign to do something positive from a negative. Sometimes when things in our own lives are difficult, we find joy and comfort in being able to help others who may be struggling with this syndrome. Nearly all Dravet family units are broken from the stress of living this life, for us it has brought us closer and stronger as a couple, parents and a family. We have learned to enjoy every moment, live in the now, and take nothing for granted. If you are a special needs parent, you need

a support system of parents going through the same things you are. No one understands what this life is like, other than those going through it with you. Today there are so many organizations for nearly every syndrome, find one and get to know those around you. It’s probably what has gotten me through the last few difficult years.” The family moved to Blackhawk, in the Pepperwood neighborhood in 2014. They needed a single level home and Christina says they found their dream home, “We love our neighborhood, it is quiet and
peaceful and we are surrounded by nature. Our neighbors are a huge support system for us; they understand Morgan’s issues and are always offering help in any way possible.” Five-year-old Colton attends Sycamore Valley Day School and is active in junior golf through Blackhawk Country Club, swimming, basketball and gymnastics. “Colton is the most amazing little brother. He loves to help with his sissy as much as possible, and it is going to shape him into a person who will care for others with disabilities,” says Christina.
Christina and Greg say their family motto is Amor Fati, which translates to love of fate. “We never expected our daughter to have a life altering condition and it has made us better people in the end. We’ve learned to enjoy every moment together and every day is a gift. We are grateful we have been able to turn a negative into a positive and help others through our foundation.”

ARF Continues Life-Saving Work Amidst COVID-19 By Cole Kuiper, ARF
D
espite our nation’s shutdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak, ARF’s lifesaving efforts continue within the shelter-inplace order. Deemed an essential business, the team continues assisting partner shelters while meeting social distancing requirements and other safety protocols. They are currently focusing on dogs and cats suffering from complicated medical issues requiring extensive veterinary care and monitoring, which public shelters cannot manage during the current pandemic. Dogs and cats like Moey. Moey is a 2-year-old pit bull mix with a thousand-watt smile who loves snuggling up on laps, slobbering up tasty treats, and rolling around in a nice patch of grass. Unfortunately, Moey did all of these activities with a painful limp. A specialist confirmed Moey had a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tear, the equivalent of a torn ACL in a human. Even
with ARF’s discounted rate with veterinary specialists, the tibial plateau leveling osteotomy surgery to repair Moey’s knee costs approximately $3,000. Additionally, ARF’s clinic discovered a scar near Moey’s back knee, indicating a previous surgery in the other leg. Her x-rays showed a metal plate in that leg from a prior bone break that healed.
Moey is in good hands with ARF’s talented veterinary team - her surgery went well and her prognosis looks good. But she’s just one of many animals in need languishing in public shelters that are operating in a limited capacity with insufficient resources. Thanks to supporters like you, ARF will always be here to help.

Blackhawk: Life through a Lens
#StayHomeSpring By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015
W
hat is everyone doing at home during #ShelterInPlace? As for me, I revisited my #InShortSupply poetic skills and penned down a few lines to #CelebrateSpring
Windows are open, to fill my senses with fragrance so deep
COVID is here, I can’t leave my home
This binge-watching is like a virus to the awakening spring
In quarantine for weeks, while the spring is on the roam Social-distancing is in, hugs are out Zoom in on spring, before the colors fadeout April brought lots of heavy and cold showers It’s May, I am ready to smell the bright and pretty flowers Stuck at home is not too crappy When birds outside are singing for me happy The silly butterflies are dazzling and flirting Make my mood inviting and uplifting Sitting outside in the warm sun, with a sunny attitude
Squirrels are on the prowl, waiting for that big leap Where’s my camera to capture this nature’s merry swing? Isn’t springtime inspiring and healing? High School Kaleidoscope By Ananya Lamba, Junior Reporter
I
n the beginning of junior year, I never expected to be stuck at home for the entirety of fourth quarter due to a worldwide pandemic. When we were first placed on lockdown, I was devastated. I could not bear to be separated from my friends and trapped inside a house with my annoying family. My days had blurred together into one long infinite loop of useless bingewatching Netflix shows, existential contemplation, and Google Classroom assignments. I am usually a passionate learner, but attending Zoom classes online from the comfort of my bed has simply taken away my will to learn. I miss biology labs with my friends, seeing my friends at lunch, and talking to my teachers.
I could go on about everything Covid-19 has taken away from me, but this quarantine period does come with its perks. I feel like I can finally take the time to breathe instead of constantly running around and worrying about school. I can sit down and do hobbies that I did not have time for. For three weeks I hung out in our garage painting two full sized wine barrels for my dad’s bar. I never would have gotten the chance to create these barrels without all this extra time. I enjoyed blasting my music and painting the barrels for hours, waving to my neighbors as they walked by. This daily routine was almost therapeutic, and I got a chance to talk to several of my Blackhawk neighbors. I also got to spend more time

with my usually busy family. I have had many more laughs and conversations with my family in this quarantine than I have had in a long time. With the gyms closed and our sport events canceled, we have gone on bike rides, walks, and even done some Zumba dance videos together to keep ourselves in shape. I never thought I would see my mom do the disco, but this quarantine has brought back the dancing queen in her. The pandemic has done the seemingly impossible task of bringing together this extremely individualistic nation. Even though we must remain six feet apart from each other, Americans all have the same goal in mind: flatten the curve. This dystopian world has brought out both the worst in some desperate people, but it has also done some good. It has encouraged many people to think about others, for everyone has the duty to keep their loved ones safe. It is our duty to flatten the curve by distancing ourselves from others and sharing our resources as opposed to hoarding them. I hope everyone remains healthy and sees the positives in this time of uncertainty.

A Great Teen Read! By Book Boot Camp with Flola Tam, Resident since 2004
The Saga of Darren Shan
There’s nothing better than an exciting book to help kill time and keep the brain running! I recently discovered the book series The Saga of Darren Shan, by Darren Shan. It’s a 12-part book series that deals with a young teen named Darren Shan as he comes to terms with becoming a vampire. The series starts with the first book, Cirque du Freak. In the story, Darren starts off as a normal human being. One day, an illegal freak circus show comes to his town. Darren and his friends sneak in to watch. He becomes obsessed with wanting to own one of the arachnids in the show and decides to steal it. This plan goes horribly wrong when the spider comes close to murdering one of his close friends. Now to save his best friend, Darren has to make a deal with a vampire and lose everything he once loved.
keep your kids entertained all summer! I highly recommend this series if you’ve got some young ones out of school for the summer. Thank you for reading!
This is such a great story for all young adults, teens, and even kids. It’s an easy read, but definitely not boring. The story is a big mosh pit of thriller, fantasy, adventure, and even a little horror. It’ll keep you on edge to see what happens next as the protagonist navigates through a completely new world. The series is even long enough to
My interest in reading sparked sometime in Elementary school. Teachers at the time assigned books as projects or were read as a class time activity. I got addicted right away, and began reading ahead of the assigned pages. Each month I will be making a book recommendation and a brief summary and review of its contents, in hopes of reintroducing a passion for reading to the community

Covid-19 Diaries! By Dr. Asha Bajaj, Resident Since 1986
T
he first week of the shutdown was actually exciting: there was time to catch up with a mystery novel, re-organize the pantry, create a fun dish in the kitchen and pick up a meditation class via Zoom. The weather was sunny and beautiful and walking around Blackhawk, spring was in full bloom. The chirping of the birds, the only sounds audible, made a great backdrop for the turkey parade on the green. I actually saw a fox streak across one day and did a double take! I have a hard time sitting for more than 30 minutes at a time so had to find a way to have a movement break at regular intervals. I have put my flag down in the media/play room and set up a mind-body circuit. There is a yoga mat with dumbbells laid out for quick 10 minute work outs as needed, and I cycle between the computer, the TV and the backyard for a breath of air. Walking has to be timed so I can wash all the clothing and shower for the second half of the day. Costco and grocery trips are limited to once in 10 days. Toilet paper has become a scarce commodity, and I rediscovered the wet wipes and the bidet. It’s been a great way to re-set our priorities and get to
know your family members and spouse a bit better. Zoom has been a wonderful socialization tool with happy hour, yoga class and meditation groups brought right to our living rooms. There is a wonderful idea from Hindu mythology that when the world runs out of balance and evil seems to prevail, there arrives an avatar of Lord Vishnu who descends to restore order in the universe. As the world turned out of balance And all things evil seemed to prevail A small tiny organism challenged us humans to the pale. In the thoroughfare of ideas, One or two truths are of avail Science can help us only so far But friendship and support Can lead the way-out of this morass We will emerge just like the lotus Each day holds the light and brightens our day! Time to hunker down and remember this too shall pass and we will all emerge a bit wiser and stronger together. Stay well-stay safe!

Top Pool Safety Tips for the Summer Swim Season By Jon Lubrano, President, Atlantis Pools Inc.
ummer is almost upon us, which means it’s your pool’s busy season and a good time to brush up on pool safety. To maintain a fun and safe environment around your swimming pool, there are several basic pool safety tips I advise all pool owners to follow. Make pool safety a priority in your backyard by following these guidelines:
S
3. Consider a Poolguard® Safety Buoy Pool Alarm
1. Have Compliant Drain Covers (VGB)
4. GFCI and Pool Lights
Virginia Graeme Baker, after whom the Pool and Spa Safety Act is named, died from drowning due to a suction entrapment from a faulty drain cover. All pools and spas should have drain grates or covers that meet safety standards to avoid incidents like the one that took Graeme’s life. Powerful suction from a pool or spa drain can even trap an adult. 2. Safety Gates
Secure your pool with appropriate barriers. Completely surround your pool with a fence or barrier with a self-closing, selflatching and outward facing gate. Place a safety cover on the pool or hot tub when not in use and remove any ladders or steps used for access. If you have small children, consider installing an alarm to alert you anytime anyone goes from the house to the backyard.
This is a pool alarm that meets county and city requirements for safety and is innovative in that it will alert you in your home, any time something substantial falls into your pool. It floats in your pool and is easier and more effective than many door alarms. The ground fault circuit interrupter, better known as the GFCI is a safety device used on installations with a higher than normal risk of electric shock. GFCI is a fast-acting circuit breaker designed to shut off electric power in the event of a ground-fault within as little as 1/40 of a second. Pool lights need to be linked to the GFCI to prevent electrocution. 5. Learn CPR
Ensure everyone in the home knows how to respond to aquatic emergencies by having appropriate safety equipment and taking water safety, first aid and CPR courses. 6. Keep All Glass Away from Your Pool
This summer Atlantis Pools has had to drain three separate pools due to glass tables in backyards that broke resulting in glass in the pool. I can not stress enough
18
how important it is to keep all glass out of your backyard if you have a pool. 7. Spa Use and Alcohol
Alcohol and spa use should never go together. Common side effects of drinking while submerged in hot water are dehydration, heat exhaustion and drowning due to impaired reflexes. At Atlantis Pools Inc., we want you and your family to have a safe and fun experience with your backyard pool. Please call us at (925) 736-0447, email info@atlantispoolsdanville.com or visit us online at www.atlantispoolsdanville.com to schedule a visit.

s most of you are aware, the past three months have been an experience of epic proportions. No one could have imagined the beginning of a new decade would have brought on this viral pandemic affecting every living breathing soul on earth. It has shown no boundaries; not race, or country, or economic status. It has affected every walk of life and strained our countries’ resources to the point of breaking, but we have not broken. We will recover, regroup, re-emerge from our cocoons of “Shelter-In -Place.” And once again wrap our arms around our loved ones, go to the grocery store without fear, attend events such as plays and theater productions and sporting events as we listen to the referee shout, “Play Ball!” And we will be warmed with a glow of happiness by just being ourselves, in the open reaching out to the world! But we will still be vigilant. That is the lesson learned from this horrific viral outbreak. Last month I wrote an article regarding emergency preparedness. I spoke of the usual threats of fires and earthquakes, but the same could be said of this health emergency. We should all maintain
staples in our pantries. Make certain that our prescriptions and daily medicines can hold us for a minimum of 2 weeks. While I do NOT prescribe to the recent hoarding of toilet paper, paper towels, and hand sanitizers that has been evident with the empty shelves at our local markets, I do believe that a healthy supply should be available at home. That supply should be commensurate with the number of people residing in your home and the size of your home. This is also a good time to make sure your neighbors are safe. See if there is anything they need that you might get for them. As this experience has taught us, there are some people at higher risk that simply should not go out, those are the neighbors you can help. In closing, I sincerely pray for the health and safety of all my Blackhawk Family. I see some incredible examples of kindness and caring and know that I am blessed to live in this generous community. As things settle back to normal, I look forward to continuing my Real Estate Business by listing and selling homes in Blackhawk. Please call me if you have any questions or concerns regarding the current protocol for showing homes as detailed by Governor Newsom. Until then; Stay Safe, Stay Healthy. LK

edwoods in Oakland? Yes indeed! This hidden gem is tucked away in the hills above Oakland. To get there you spend some time winding up a beautiful hilly residential area and then you can park in one of the small lots or you can easily find some street parking hugging the hillside. There are four main trailheads at the parking area and all of them loop around and interweave. It is easy to do anywhere from two to six miles depending on how long you want to spend. Some of the trails allow mountain biking and you can often see people jogging the hills. Once you hike in a bit you can stay low on the Stream Trail where in wet seasons there have been Rainbow Trout. During the dry season this is just as beautiful and you can see how the stream winds in and out of the redwood groves. Summer stays especially cool on the lower trails because of the redwoods’ shade.

There are also smaller trails that feel off the beaten path and can be steep for more advanced hikers. Sometimes you won’t see anyone else on these smaller trails at all. These higher paths are great for some extra serenity and for working on your hiking skills. Dogs are allowed off leash in most areas under voice control.

Tucson’s La Paloma Golf Resort
By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012
W
e eagerly anticipated our visit to the Westin La Paloma Resort in Tucson, which allowed us to play the La Paloma Country Club. The semi-private golf course is split into three nine-hole layouts. While the Canyon and Ridge nines opened in 1984, the Hill nine was added two years later. From our room, we could see the gently undulating fairway and well-manicured ninth green of the Hill course. As is common with Nicklaus’ courses, the fairways are broad, and the bunkering is plentiful and deep. In fact, as a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, many holes are best played from left to right. Thus, the starters general advice is to stay left of the 150-yard barber pole, and you’ll be fine getting onto the green.
Expansive Greenside Bunkers

Nasty Cactus
There is no doubt that the La Paloma Country Club at the Westin La Paloma Golf Resort is not a typical resort course. On balance, it will test you. Consequently, pick from six different tee grounds to find the perfect yardage. Mostly, holes wind through an upscale community in this metropolitan area of about one million people, home to the University of Arizona. Most holes have beautiful views of the Santa Catalina mountains. On higher elevation tee grounds, the views are magnificent. The service for Westin La Paloma resort guests is the same superb service given to members. Nevertheless, the clubhouse grill inside is reserved for members hence inaccessible to resort guests. Guests sit outside on the patio. The Ridge/Canyon course is #26 in Arizona by Golf Magazine’s 2016-17 ranking.
to large and moderately contoured greens, three putts are common if you lose your focus. The approach shot requires crossing a swale to a plateaued green sitting below the clubhouse surrounded by a deep undulating amphitheater.
The Ridge Nine
If You Go
Nicklaus creates undulating fairways and waste areas across the fairway and long waste areas abutting the fairways on several holes. In like fashion, menacing green-side bunkers are also a staple of Nicklaus design, and this is no exception. As a matter of fact, cacti are often in the way of tee shots judging by the holes in them.
The Canyon Nine All things considered, the Canyon nine is definitively the most difficult of the three nines. Severe undulations effectively narrow some fairways. Similarly, approach shots often must challenge pin placements with green-side swales narrowing the effective green size. An elevated tee shot on the Par4 Hole #7 is our favorite. The lack of fairway bunkers here encourages you to shade the corner to have a shorter club into a steeply uphill approach shot.
The Hill Nine We finished on the Hill nine, the easiest of the three nines. Fairways are flatter and bunkers are less frequent. That being said, bunkers in center of the fairway on the Hole #2 protect the short Par4. Due

y Mah Jongg group of friends normally gets together for a weekly game of Mah Jongg at the Blackhawk Country Club, and with the shelter-in-place, we decided to take our game virtual. Our group of 14 friends have been playing Mah Jongg weekly for over 20 years. We play the game via the website www.realmahjongg.com and then we have another device such as an iPad or computer where we zoom so that we can talk to each other as we are playing. The best part of mah-jongg is not necessarily the game, but being together with friends and solving the problems of the world as we play. The friendship and conversation is what it’s all about, but the game is addictive and we all love it. We call Friday our Chinese Study Group.

How Effective is Invisalign Orthodontic Therapy? By Richard Anthony, DDS MS – Blackhawk Orthodontics
I
nvisalign is an orthodontic system using a series of clear plastic aligners, rather than traditional braces to straighten your teeth. Invisalign has become both a popular and effective method of straightening smiles. Since it was introduced in 1998, dentists around the world have treated over 3.5 million patients. Invisalign’s popularity most likely stems from the fact that patients appreciate that they just don’t look like traditional braces. This advantage is most evident in the older teen and adult orthodontic patient population. However, the younger orthodontic patients still have a fun time and prefer to change the multi-colored arch wire ties of their traditional braces at every appointment visit! Another advantage Invisalign aligners have over braces is that they are definitely more comfortable to wear since they hug tight to the teeth and do not
stick out from the surface of the teeth. They make it much easier to eat than with braces, because the aligners need to be removed from the mouth when chewing food and drinking liquids (except cold water). Other Invisalign advantages involve the increased convenience of being able to remove the aligners for special occasions (both social and work related) and to perform the important task of brushing and flossing to maximize the effectiveness of maintaining good oral hygiene. With all of these great advantages, why is not every orthodontic patient currently being treated with the Invisalign system? For the most part, Invisalign can move the teeth; however, many orthodontic problems stem from facial/jaw growth problems that are currently beyond the scope of aligner tray treatment. For example, severe overbite or underbite conditions often require
26
headgear in growing patients to have an effective correction. In fact there are some circumstances wear removable aligner trays are not as effective as traditional braces. Since the aligners are removable, some patients do not wear them enough (the recommended 20-22 hours/day) to properly move the teeth. Also, some patients report initial slight speech impediment. My advice is to carefully consider the advantages and disadvantages of either traditional braces or Invisalign that relate to the personal needs of you or your child; and discuss them with your orthodontist so that the plan can lead to the road of a successful orthodontic treatment outcome.

The New Normal in Education - Helping Students Cope By Maria Ward, Principal, St. Isidore School
D
ue to the COVID-19 virus and shelter-in-place mandate, we find ourselves in unprecedented times. School closures across the globe and an overall shift from our normal routine have left parents and educators concerned about the impact on students both academically and socially. To those experiencing feelings of stress and anxiety over this sudden change in education, I want to encourage you to remember the big picture. As the Challenge Success Program at Stanford University wisely reminds us, “This is a time to focus on — and be grateful for — your family’s safety, health, and well-being. Make building strong family relationships a priority. Reach out to neighbors, friends, and others in your community to check in, offer support, and connect virtually.” Families across the country are experiencing this situation differently depending on their school’s approach to long-distance learning, work commitments, and the unique needs of each child. As the list of parental responsibilities grows, so does the amount of stress experienced by the family. When these intense feelings arise, I encourage you to take a deep breath. Scale back if needed, and allow your child to focus on core content such as Math, Writing and Reading. Let your child have time to expand their critical thinking skills by exploring extracurricular activities such as pleasure reading, a virtual conversation with a friend, drawing, exercise, and play. Trust me, your teachers want what is best for you and your child. Take a moment to communicate your concerns with them. Chances are you are not alone, and taking a moment to share your story helps everyone.
are keeping us motivated and smiling. As educational development continues to change, I am reminded of the following quote: “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” – Victor Frankl I applaud the students, parents, and teachers for their flexibility and dedication to learning. I pray for the health and safety of this community and look forward to brighter days ahead!
It is too early to say how the worldwide pandemic has changed how we teach and learn. We know it has required teachers to grow and explore in a new and exciting way. Online platforms such as Zoom, Google Hangouts, and Google Chat have allowed for face-to-face instruction and the much-missed social connection. I can tell you firsthand that teaching truly is a labor of love and that daily interactions with students

Families gathered together and posted pictures of how they were enjoying the auction festivities from their living rooms. The proceeds from this fundraiser help provide the school with important Technology, Library, Music and ParaEducator support. Additionally, the Foundation fully funds the Reading Room Program, which was awarded the prestigious Gold Ribbon Award by the School District. As you can see from the pictures our T.H.E. families know how to make the best of any situation. A big thank you to the incredible support and generosity from local businesses and families who donated auction items. You can see them all here: https://the2020.ggo.bid/

The Fox Creek/Blackhawk Meadow Book Club
Goes Virtual By Jeanie Egan, Resident since 1986
T
he Fox Creek/Blackhawk Meadow Book Club usually meets every month, but just had our first “virtual” book club due to the shelter-in-place. It was wonderful to see everyone’s faces and connect. Michelle Barry has been wonderful in setting this up and tutoring those who haven’t used Zoom before. She even held a practice session for anyone who needed it before the actual Book Club time. We shared so many stories of our own and how we’re coping during Covid 19 before we began discussing our book of the month Indigo Girl by Natasha Boyd. The book was wonderful and definitely got the thumbs up from all who read it.

Meditate to Self Regulate By: Dr. Tracey James, DC, Anatomy Power Wellness
I
t’s no surprise to us all that the world has changed. That life as we once knew it - is different. There is a lot of fear and despair in the air, but there is also a lot of good. Family dinners have made a comeback, neighborhoods are seeing a surge in support and connection as we all do our part to make this time a time of healing and growth for our planet. But what if the fear of the unknown has you stuck in your tracks and you can’t seem to break the cycle? We have one very effective strategy that can help you – Meditation. Meditation can support you in self regulation. Meditation may reduce blood pressure, anxiety, depression, insomnia, symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and help you gain a sense of clarity and focus. It’s understandable that practicing meditation when stressed can be difficult, but if you can commit to ‘doing rather than perfecting’ a few minutes a day, you will notice a difference. Psychology Today estimates that in just 11 hours of accumulative meditation your brain changes. That’s powerful! When starting out, guided meditations work the best and are best done in the morning or before bed. Start between 3 to 5 minutes and gradually increase to 10 minutes a session. Some great resources to check out: Mobile Apps: Insight Timer, Headspace, Calm + Muse (While Muse isn’t free, it is an office favorite because of the biofeedback with EEG that gives signals in the form of sounds to the person meditating, supporting them in finding their focused calm.) YouTube Channel: OmShaanti, The Mindful Movement, or any quick search for “5-minute guided meditation” or Yoga Nidra. You can also search by categories with either the apps or YouTube for specific meditations that fit what you are going through at the time. Things like health, healing, anxiety, loss, relationship problems, etc. There is a vast free offering out there. Take it for a spin. Your brain and body will thank you! Remember – it’s okay to get lost in thoughts while meditating. Don’t beat yourself up and give up because of it. Even the masters of meditation have their analytical brain take over. It’s about recognizing the thoughts as they come up and letting them go. If you picture each thought as a balloon, let it float away and continue through the recording. You got this! We believe in you!

Keeping Your Jewelry Clean is Good for Your Health! By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry and The Broadway Plaza Forevermark Boutique
Keeping Your Jewelry Clean is Good for Your Health!
As the importance of staying healthy and germ-free continues to be a big part of our daily life, so should regular jewelry cleaning. We wear our jewelry to commemorate special memories and times – but they also can harbor the same kinds of germs we are all trying to avoid. Doing the dishes, doing household chores, and cooking dinner are all activities that could cause dirt and other daily items like lotion and hairspray to build up on your ring. How often should I clean my ring?
If you’re wearing your ring at all times, a thorough cleaning once a month is a good rule to follow – although considering the current situation, there is nothing wrong with cleaning it daily! Many jewelers will also recommend regular professional cleaning at the jeweler in between your at-home cleanings. Be sure to inquire about cleaning services when you make your purchase. Most professional cleaning services are offered at no charge, and might even be required with some warranties or insurance policies. What should I avoid when wearing my diamond ring?
Bridal jewelry, such as engagement rings and wedding bands are typically worn daily and can appear like they’ve lost their sparkle if not cleaned on a regular basis. As a general rule, avoid these things when wearing your diamond jewelry: • • • • • •
Putting on lotions Using gym equipment such as dumbbells or weights Gardening Painting of any kind Chlorinated pools and hot tubs Touching diamonds with your fingers, as smudges can affect a diamond’s luster and fire
STEP 2: Use a polishing cloth to polish the metal. STEP 3: Soak your ring in your homemade solution for 2-3 hours. STEP 4: Use a very soft toothbrush or a jewelry cleaning brush to gently buff. STEP 5: Rinse with warm water and pat dry. With all of this extra time at home, it’s a perfect opportunity to open up your jewelry box and give your gems a little T.L.C. At-home cleanings will give your jewelry its sparkle back. If you have questions, contact the experts at Padis Jewelry, and we will be happy to provide all the information you need to help you keep your jewelry in great shape. Proceed with caution when using ultrasonic cleaners, as only certain gemstones can handle the ultrasonic vibrations. It’s best to leave this type of cleaning to the professionals just to be safe. How do I clean my diamond ring at home?
You can make your own diamond cleaning solution at home using white vinegar and baking soda. Mix about 2 tablespoons into a small bowl of white vinegar until it’s thoroughly dissolved. Follow these steps to give your ring a thorough at-home cleaning: STEP 1: Use your fingernail to inspect each jewel, making sure no stones are loose. This is especially important for rings with many small stones. 34
