It’s that time of year when we celebrate and honor the mothers! Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 8th. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! May also brings Memorial Day, which in my book, is the gateway to summer. It’s the cue to pack up the winter clothes and bring out the sandals. Whether you are heading out of town or spending the holiday grilling in your backyard, we hope you have a safe and relaxing holiday weekend. Blackhawk Living is your neighborhood magazine, and in this issue you’ll meet your neighbors, the Shell Family. They share a combined love of golf and dogs and fit right in here in Blackhawk. In this month’s community calendar, you’ll find many ways to get involved in the community. Plus Blackhawk Chef, Parisa Z. Ambwani shares one of her favorite recipes.

Warmly, We are devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share please email me at mscott@bestversionmedia.com.

shared love of golf first brought Lydia and Amy together, but it was a mutual desire for fun, adventure and good humor that has kept them together. “We met through West Valley, a Women’s Traveling Golf Group, in 2009. At that time, Lydia was not a very good golfer, and she accidentally hit a woman with a golf ball on the very first day. I saw the whole thing and thought, ‘that’s not the way to make a good first impression.’ I made a point to say hi to her and welcome her to the group. Pretty soon we got paired together in team play. We played a practice round and Lydia showed up with beads to count her strokes. After the round, we had a beer and I told her that was a lot of fun, but you’ve got to ditch the beads! Lydia ditched the beads and after 10 years, we finally decided to get married,” says Amy. Both are California transplants. Lydia was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and raised in the Four-Corners area. She grew up eating Hatch Green Chili from her high chair and climbing trees, before finding her way to the Silicon Valley. Amy was born into a military family in Honolulu, Hawaii and raised in rural Kansas on a lake that she water-skied on in the summer and ice-skated on in the winter. They both made their way to California for school and careers. Lydia joined the US Army after high school and continued her education in San Diego and Santa Clara in software and mechanical engineering. For 20 years, she owned her own business in the failure analysis and the semiconductor production industry. Amy started college at California State University, Long Beach and then transferred to nursing school at CSU Hayward. She went on to graduate school at Holy Names University. “I have balanced my passion for helping by consulting for non-profit organizations who work with

underserved youth, while concurrently seeing patients in private practice specializing in Allergy and Asthma,” says Amy. Creativity is in Lydia’s and Amy’s blood. Lydia comes from a talented family of painters, sculptors, and musicians. Her brother is a musician and even opened for 10,000 Maniacs and is currently in a band with Ron Delp (brother of former lead singer of Boston, Brad Delp). Amy’s sister plays trumpet and father plays guitar. Her mother is a wizard on the sewing machine and made hundreds of masks for the non-profit organization where Amy consults. Lydia and Amy are both diehard San Francisco Giants fans and love starting off the season in Scottsdale at Spring Training. Lydia is passionate about golf, “I love golf, and enjoy playing as often as possible. I also play guitar, enjoy barbecuing, and watching the stock market….some days more than others. Amy struggles to find enough time for hobbies these days, but loves playing harmonica, cooking, hiking, working with our rescue dogs and of course golfing,” says Lydia. The couple attend an online church service in Kansas every week. Two rescue dogs complete the family. One well-behaved Pit Bull, named Bailey, and a troubled 11-pound Chihuahua mix from the streets of Bakersfield, named Patch. “Patch is 90% cuddly, 10% guard your ankles and 100% cute,” says Amy. One of their favorite ways to travel is road tripping by RV. “We have a 40-foot RV and take it out every month. During the height of the pandemic, we drove it all the way to Kansas and learned why Dorothy got blown away, and that RVs are not aerodynamic!” says Lydia.

MAY 2022

It was a game of golf that brought the couple to Blackhawk. Lydia had been dead set on staying in the Silicon Valley and not interested in the area, but with Amy’s persuasion, she agreed to visit the country club and check out the golf course. “After the round, we had a glass of wine in the Lakeside bar overlooking the 18th hole during sunset and Lydia said ‘you did this on purpose, now I want to move here!’” says Amy. Lydia adds that they found their dream home while golfing, “We joined the club before moving here and while golfing on hole 14, look over at the backyard from the 14th fairway and say ‘there’s our house’. At that time, the house was on the market for over a year. Then one day, while driving away from hole 14 green, we both realized how sad we were going to be when ‘our house’ sold. We decided to put our Silicon Valley house up for sale the next day and put an offer in on ‘our house’. We have wonderful neighbors and love it here! There is an annual block party potluck in the summer that is wellattended! We can text any of our neighbors to take out our trash or pick up an Amazon package on the porch. It doesn’t get any better!”

A Boost of Confidence ByDr8Stephen8J Ronan6CAS6 MDF Bpackhawkpas…c P SurgeryandMedSpa

ost women interested in breast augmentation are intelligent, successful, and well-adjusted individuals who are simply concerned with their breast size. The overwhelming majority of women who undergo breast augmentation are very satisfied with their result. Because of such high patient satisfaction and improvement in self-image, it is not surprising that breast augmentation is one of the more common aesthetic plastic surgery procedures performed. There are two main groups of women that are typically interested in breast augmentation. The first group is women who feel they never developed the breast volume they desire. After surgery, many of these patients benefit psychologically and experience an improvement in self-confidence. In fact, studies show that many women have a better self-image and less anxiety, depression, and shyness after breast augmentation. The second group of women that commonly seek breast enhancement are those that lost volume after pregnancy, a condition called postpartum breast involution. Many of these patients complain that they have nothing left after nursing and/or having their baby. Typically,

Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses

these patients have an augmentation which restores their breast volume…and sometimes a bit more! A mastopexy, or breast lift, procedure can be performed at the same time to lift and improve shape simultaneously. Breast augmentation is a safe procedure and does not typically affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed. When we place the breast implant behind the chest muscle, it never touches the breast tissue, and most patients do not have a permanent change in sensation after the augmentation. Another method of breast enhancement involves transferring fat from another part of the body to better shape and enhance the breast. We call this fat transfer or fat grafting. To provide the safest environment, I believe that all surgery should be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon in a fully accredited surgery center or hospital with an anesthesiologist present. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for breast enhancement is to schedule a consultation with us. During this complimentary appointment, we will discuss the procedure in detail and review your options, questions and concerns together. If you are interested in learning more about breast augmentation or other cosmetic procedure, please give us a call at 925.736.5757. Until then, we look forward to hearing from you!

DIY Mother’s Day Coupon Book By Amanda Griffin

Want to give Mom something she’ll really appreciate this year that will make her feel special and appreciated for more than just a day? How about designing your own coupon book with offers she can use when it’s just the right time for her? Here’s what you’ll need: •

Paper, several sheets depending upon how many coupons you want to make, and of course a little extra in case you make a mistake

Crayons, colored pencils, or markers

Scissors

Stapler

Once you have all your supplies ready, it’s time to figure out what offers you think your mom will like the most. Keep in mind that it shouldn’t be things you already do as part of your chores, unless it’s to do them without complaining or procrastinating if you tend to do either of those. These coupons should be for extra tasks or activities, age-appropriate of course, that you aren’t normally responsible for, and will show your mom how special she is and how much you care. Here are a few ideas to help you get started: 1.

Extra help around the house with things like laundry, cleaning windows, wiping baseboards, etc.

2.

Cooking/making a meal

3.

Gardening or picking weeds

4.

An hour of quality time doing something together that your mom really enjoys and doesn't get to do very often.

5.

Babysitting your sibling(s)

6.

Game night mom’s choice

7.

Movie night mom’s choice

8.

A neck rub

9.

A foot massage

10. A morning to sleep in without being bothered or an uninterrupted nap

You know your mom; think about some other things that she would really like. Once you have your list of coupons you want to make, it’s time to have fun. Depending upon how big you want to make your coupons, you should be able to make four to six coupons from each sheet of paper. The easiest way is to fold the sheet in half and cut along the fold, then fold those two sheets either in half again or three equal sections and cut along those fold lines. (Of course, if you are old enough and have a paper cutter, you can always do it that way as well.) When you have finished cutting the paper it’s time to write the coupon offers you have selected, one on each coupon. And now it’s time to decorate each coupon with fun and colorful borders and designs. Make each coupon a work of original art, so it’s like two gifts in one, the artwork and thought, as well as the task or activity on the coupon. Once you have all your coupons decorated, it’s time to assemble your coupon book. You’ll want to organize them in order that makes sense to you. Perhaps if you have duplicates of the same offer, you could put those together. Now make a nice, neat stack with all the coupons lined up evenly on the left edge. Carefully staple the stack of coupons along the left edge. Depending upon the size of your coupons, you’ll want to do two or three staples (corners and middle) in a straight line so it’s easy for your mom to hold the left edge and tear out the coupon she wants to use. Place the coupon book in a nice envelope or small gift box to make a nice gift like presentation. That’s it, you’re all set. Just remember to think outside the box and come up with some extra special ideas that your mom will love!

Cultivar:

Napa Winery and SF Restaurant Gem ByMikeL8McCopgan6

ResidentsinceEPhotobyMJcCopgan

Recently, we had the opportunity to visit Cultivar Winery located in the heart of Napa. This Napa Gem is owned by Jody and Gingy Harris Gable. Jody and his sister Gingy grew up on their family’s picturesque property. From the web site, “the word Cultivar means a variety of a plant that has been deliberately selected for specific desirable characteristics.” Jody also has a great restaurant in San Francisco called Cultivar that serves all of their wines. We also had the opportunity to dine at his restaurant in the great ‘city by the bay’. We enjoyed great service and a variety of ‘perfectly prepared dishes in a warm and cozy atmosphere buzzing with excitement from many happy patrons. Today Hospitality Manager Deborah Evans shared her vast wine knowledge and led our wine tasting with Jody and our good friends from Marin, Pete and Louise Petri. It was a joy to experience Winemaker Julien Fayard’s wide array of ‘sensational‘ creations. We especially enjoyed the estate blend Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet. All of these great wines can be tasted at his great restaurant called Cultivar in the Marina District in the ‘great city by the bay’. To make reservations go to www.cultivarsf.com

Ladies Golf

ucky Niners played green ball shenanigans at Lakeside on St Patrick’s Day. Board members welcomed golfers with grand sized shamrock cookies and Irish coffees (spirits optional) outside the pro shop. By the time carts rolled out too, everyone was feeling just a wee bit Irish. Each team received one shamrock green golf ball to rotate among players as they changed tees. Two best net scores would compete for the win - provided that lovely green ball was returned with your scorecard. Many fierce teams were defeated by the curse of the lost green ball. But for winners Sue Sunder, Kendal Goldthwaite and Anissa Lee it was their lucky charm. Congratulations and well played! There was more gallivanting with golf clubs in March at the monthly Charm Day competition. It was a great day of golf on the Falls followed by lunch in the ladies lounge. Congratulations to March Charm winner, Vicki Robinson and to all who played their best for distinction

Set To Thrive:

Food Bank Helping Our Communities Announces Foster Youth ByLisaHenderson6PresidentgOEC

May is Foster Care Awareness Month! Set To Thrive launched in 2021 and came from the idea that children entering the foster care system deserve access to new, brand-name essential items to provide them a sense of comfort and confidence during a difficult time in their lives. There are approximately 1,000 children in foster care in Contra Costa County and approximately 1,200 in Alameda County. The moment when a child enters the foster care system is a moment of extreme vulnerability and stress, and it can often be traumatic. Many of these children only have the clothes on their backs, and maybe little more. Set To Thrive is a California nonprofit charity that seeks to ease that transition by providing these children with a custom bag – a Thrive Bag. We fill each custom Thrive Bag with a new backpack or duffel, two days of clothing, underwear, socks, tennis shoes, hygiene

Biggest Match in 47-year History

items, as well as other items to help ease the transition. We customize each bag for each child, including fit, ethnic hair care ByJoepSjostrom6 ood F BankpresidentandOEC products, LGBTQ ordering options, etc. Our goal is to help each child thrive in their new home and community. We work directly with many organizations – County agencies and private nonprofit groups – that support foster children. When a new child enters the system, those organizations request a Thrive Bag through the Set To Thrive website fillable order form. Once ordered, we provide that child’s custom-ordered Thrive Bag to that organization within two days. Set To Thrive currently serves our community’s children from ages 0-18 years old that are entering into or transitioning within the foster care system. We have been very successful during our inaugural year. Our growth plans include both expanding to surrounding counties and also partnering with other foster organizations that assist foster youth who “age out” of foster care on their 18th birthday. Set To Thrive relies on individual donations and corporate partners. For more information on how you can help, please visit our website at www. settothrive.org.

Agape Villages

Foster Family Agency ByJennifere6 Ox Communityngagement E Director6TriHVappey

What does Agape Villages Foster Family Agency do? Agape Villages is a local foster family agency, and we service 14 counties throughout California, with corporate offices in San Ramon. We have a large presence in the Tri-Valley, Central Valley, and Sacramento. We recruit, train, and certify people who come to us and want to take in kids who have been removed from their biological homes. Unfortunately, there are over 60,000 kids in foster care in California alone. At Agape, we aim to heal the whole child with the programs we provide, and eventually reunite them with their biological parents, which is always the goal. What are some of the reasons a child may need to be temporarily placed in foster care? Most of the time it is due to abuse, neglect, and/ or drug/alcohol problems in the home. A large majority of the cases are identified at school and are then called into the Department of Children and Family Health who then go out to the home for a welfare check. DCF then determines if the child should be removed from the home and placed in foster care for their own safety and well-being. Is Agape Villages recruiting foster parents and how long does it take to get certified? Yes! We are constantly recruiting foster parents. Last year we turned down over 500 kids due to a lack of foster homes. It’s not just Agape, most all agencies cannot find enough foster parents. It only takes about 6 weeks to be fully certified to take in a child. The process includes a background check, TB test, home safety evaluation, and CPR certification as well as some classes. What are some of the programs that Agape offers to its parents and foster kids? A master’s level social worker is assigned to each foster child. They visit each child once per week, develop a plan for that child based on their specific needs. A typical “needs and services” plan could include the following: •

Counseling: Many kids come to us with severe emotional and psychological issues

Enrichment: This program lets our kids participate in

extracurricular activities such as playing a sport, taking a music/ dance class, etc. •

Independent Living Skills (for teens): Teaches the kids how to live successful lives outside the foster care system. It provides nutrition/finance/legal classes, Resume writing/job placement, SAT classes, Junior college tours, and much more.

Girls Group: We have a teen girl’s group that meets once a month. This group really gives the kids a chance to bond with each other, share stories, struggles, and it also lets them know they are not alone and that there are other kids out there in foster care who share their same feelings. The girls venture out and do fun things like movies, mini golf, amusement parks, museums, and much more. The girls share a great bond and have improved self-esteem because of this group.

What do you wish people knew about the experience of being a foster child? What can society do to make things better for these children? I think the kids always say that they just want to be accepted and treated like the other kids, especially at school. They certainly don’t want to be known as “the foster kid” in classes and in their neighborhoods. I think we can teach our kids to be more kind and accepting of everyone, no matter their background or childhood experiences. How does Agape raise funds for the critical foster care programs? We have 3 major events every year. May is foster care awareness month and we have a big campaign rolling out to raise 100k! One thing we are doing is asking local realtors to contribute $500 from each home sold in the month of May. We think this is a great opportunity for realtors to make a huge difference in the lives of local foster kids. We also have a fall fundraiser and a combo event with another non-profit in December. We honestly can never raise enough! For more information, please contact me -. Jennifer Oxe, Community Engagement Director, TriValley (jenoxe@agapevillages.org OR 408-930-9951) Thank you!

A Flight for Mom ByToriDraegeraff6 P DraegeresMarket

T

ake mom on a Tour de France this Mother’s Day with a special flight - a flight that doesn’t take 11 ½ hours with a layover in Hanover. For a sophisticated woman who has exquisite taste, putting together a tasting flight of French wines is a unique way to give her both a memorable experience and spend time with her. A ‘flight’ of wine is a group of similar wines that are brought together for tasting purposes. The number of wines can range anywhere from three to eight; and the idea is to compare and contrast flavors. A little easy planning goes a long way to elevate cocktail hour to a formal flight tasting. The first thing you will need is a wine tasting sheet. You can create your own, or download one at Draegers.com. If you are creating your own, at the top of your page draw as many circles as wines you will be tasting (this is to keep the wines from be confused). A glass goes on top of each circle. Below the glasses, divide your sheet into columns, and the columns into sections labeled Appearance, Aroma, Body, Taste, and Overall. Make sure each person who is participating has a sheet and pen for notes.

synonymous with mouthfeel: does it feel light and effervescent, or does it fully coat your tongue? Taste is about recording what flavors you find within the wine. When you arrive at the overall section of your notes, write down your final impression- was this a dud, or is it your new favorite go-to dinner wine? The best part of hosting a formal tasting is that you are offering a shared experience that, because each palate is different, is unique to all partaking. We have a few wine suggestions for your Mother’s Day Flight, and if you are looking for more suggestions, or think mom would enjoy a ‘flight’ to a different region of the world, Draeger’s Wine Stewards are available to help you book your trip. Tour de France Flight List By.Ott Provence Rosé …. $19.99 Domaine Auchère Sancerre …. $22.99 Domaine Bouchard Beaune du Chateau Red Burgundy Premier Cru …. $53.99 Château de Montefaucon Lirac Rhône Blend …. $26.99 Cremant d’Alsace Allimant-Laugner Brut Rosé …. $20.99

Lay out your wines. The best order to taste wine in is white to red, dry to sweet. If you have never tried any of the wines you will be pouring, Draeger’s Wine Stewards can help you select the proper order for your choices. You can also make some assumptions based upon your knowledge about wines from certain regions, or simply go white to red, lightest to darkest in color. Provide plain crackers and water for a palate cleanse between sips. Once your tasting is set up, the real fun begins. Under appearance, jot down what you see, from color to sediment or bubbles. Mustang Soccer 2022 News ByRichardNorthing6PresidentMustangSoccer

O

ne of our key Vision Goals in our Mustang Soccer Mission Statement is “We will absolutely support players across all diverse backgrounds in an equitable way.” After a few incidents that challenged this goal in the back end of 2021, we have recently introduced a mandatory program of Equity and Inclusion education for all of our coaches and older players and their parents. Given the worldwide attention to this topic, Mustang’s focus on this area is likely no surprise to you. There is an abundance of wonderful content available to provide education around Equity and Inclusion, but we believe we have distilled the important topics into a focused class using the best content available from The Institute for the Study of Sport, Society, and Societal Change - ISSSSC (https://www.sjsu.edu/wordstoaction/) and longterm partner, Positive Coaching Alliance (https://positivecoach.org/). We are excited and optimistic about the impact this program will have on our players and community, and ask for your full support.

High School Sports Update ByRickyHepton6ResidentSince

W

ith soccer and basketball season over for the year, now comes baseball and softball. I managed to attend a few Monte Vista High School games, including one against De La Salle High School. Monte Vista lost in the end 5-3, but they definitely didn’t go down without a fight. Senior, Dyllan Devitt, pitched four innings despite giving up five runs and did a great job against the hitters of DSL. I thought they might have pulled away with a comeback, but they just fell a bit short.

I’ll be looking forward to capturing more games to come of the Varsity Baseball season.

L. Spies, #3, had a huge double RBI as well as C. Littlefield. As I’m writing this, MVHS record is 7-8. DLS is 10-2.

The young women did a great job of playing through it, and had some great memories and pictures that came of it. Here’s just a few.

I also had the opportunity to attend a MVHS vs Northgate softball scrimmage, prior to the start of their season and had the opportunity to capture a scrimmage in a hail storm.

The East Bay Street Dreams Car Club ByDavidTom6ResidentSince

T

he East Bay Street Dreams Car Club was founded by two women to foster and establish camaraderie among fellow car enthusiasts. The club held their first Blackhawk show on September 18, 2021. E.B. Street Dreams emphasizes the importance of trust, integrity, respect, teamwork, and good sportsmanship. As you can see, they love their classics. This devotedness can be seen as a member checks her black ’70 Monte Carlo before the judging begins. The club participates in events throughout the Bay Area and supports other clubs and local communities. We are excited to welcome the East Bay Street Dreams Car Club back when they return to the Blackhawk Museum on September 10.

Life through a Lens

Spring at FILOLI! BySoniaLamba6Residentsince

T

he perfectly manicured gardens with tall lined column trees, projecting strength and confidence, were opened to the public in 1977, by Filoli’s second owner, the Roths. The enticing old brick walls with arched doorways and walking in the warm sun into the shade, it felt like unwrapping a beautiful gift: one inviting view after another. It’s Tulip time! And what better way to enjoy the spring weather than tiptoeing through the gorgeous tulips. Filoli, this vibrant beauty, is nestled along the slopes of California’s coastal range in Woodside, CA. The walking trail around the estate is a must and a fun way to explore the hidden picturesque spots. Old World beauty at its best! The Georgian style historic house with a spectacular English Renaissance Garden, a 654-acre property, built as a private residence in 1917, by a wealthy San Francisco family, the Bourns.

Pet Corner

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue ByJanineCoppins6Bpackhawkresidentsince

Daiy - Foster Dog Program at T VAR Miss Daisy is a 3 year old little chihuahua who is a lovebug who likes to be the queen of attention. She will gladly paw at you almost like a high five when she would like you to pet her. If you are looking for a wonderful lap dog, she is your little lady. Daisy does well with meeting other dogs; however, she prefers to be the only dog on your lap. Daisy would be the perfect companion for anyone wanting an adorable cuddle bug as she happily gives kisses too. She likes to be photogenic too. Miss Daisy sleeps well in her crate and instantly will sleep in a dog bed.

Tri-Valley Animal R escue (T VAR ) Giving them Another Chance TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating just short of 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs. All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens and the Public..

TVAR gives deserving animals like Daisy another chance by taking them into foster care. All TVAR dogs live in foster homes till adopted. Foster families get to know each dog’s personality and needs in a home setting- allowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs and adopters thrive!

Peluche - Foster Kitten Program at T VAR Meet Peluche, the ultimate lap kitty! TVAR rescued this 13 year old boy from the local shelter because he is such a special, loving kitty. He likes nothing better than to sit in your lap and purr ALL.DAY. LONG!... He’ll take an occasional break for playtime with his various toys (and laser!) and eating too :). A nicer kitty you just can’t find. Peluche wants to be your one and only. He’s looking for a home without other animals so he can be the ONLY apple of his adopter’s eye. He’s got a serious looking face though is a complete softie. Pictures are difficult as once you come close he comes forward wanting to be picked up and loved. He’s on special food to keep his kidneys working smoothly and definitely enjoys his meals. TVAR’s cat, kitten and bottle baby programs rescue cats and kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes.

Navigating Home Financing During Divorce ByToddGapde6CrossCountryMortgage6CL8

Home Financing Customized for Family Law

support are usable for Conventional financing.

One of the most stressful events in a family’s life is divorce, and one of the biggest points of contention is what to do with the family home, especially if there are children in the picture who want to stay in their respective schools and the remaining spouse does not have sufficient income to refinance the existing mortgage in their name only.

The departing spouse can then purchase a new home without the old mortgage affecting their ability to qualify in the future.

Conventional lending rules require at least six months of on-time payments of the spousal and child support, and the six months don’t begin until after the divorce has been finalized with the courts. This could be 12-24 months after the initial separation was filed.

Consider this revolutionary home financing that solves an ageless challenge for families going through a divorce. Please visit me online at www.TheNINELoan.com or more information. In Our Backyard

Redwood Regional Park

Great for Dogs, Jogs and Kids ByNicopaShihab6DanvippePubpicInforma…onOfficer

In Our Backyard: Ways to Explore the Outdoors Redwoods in Oakland? Yes indeed! This hidden gem is tucked away in the hills above Oakland. To get there you spend some time winding up a beautiful hilly residential area and then you can park in one of the small lots or you can easily find some street parking hugging the hillside. There are four main trailheads at the parking area and all of them loop around and interweave. It is easy to do anywhere from two to six miles depending on how long you want to spend. Some of the trails allow mountain biking and you can often see people jogging the hills. Once you hike in a bit you can stay low on the Stream Trail where in wet seasons there have been Rainbow Trout. During the dry season this is just as beautiful and you can see how the stream winds in and out of the redwood

groves. Summer stays especially cool on the lower trails because of the redwoods’ shade. There are also smaller trails that feel off the beaten path and can be steep for more advanced hikers. Sometimes you won’t see anyone else on these smaller trails at all. These higher paths are great for some extra serenity and for working on your hiking skills. Dogs are allowed off leash in most areas under voice control. The best part? The flatter areas are great for kids too. It is one of those Bay Area gems that really does have something for everyone. You can build and create your own hiking adventure just 30 minutes outside of Danville! All the trails, hours and history can be found at ebparks.org.

hey say April showers bring May flowers. Not many showers in April this year, but I brought the flowers into my art for this month’s article.

I worked with fabric scraps to create a travel sewing kit that I saw on Ann Wood Handmade’s website https://www. annwoodhandmade.com

Automobile Gallery

Ann has many free patterns available for download. This one is called “needle book”. The pin cushion in the photo is also a free download of Ann Wood’s. My sister made it for me. The pin cushion pattern is called “pin girl pincushion diy”. Use the same link to access both “free” patterns. Another extremely easy item I created this month are crochet flowers. I glued them on a fabric covered headband I bought at Target, but you can put them on clothing, scrapbooks, pillows, etc. I used this video for the instructions: https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Yp9PX7YEW4

A google search on “crochet flowers” will send you down the rabbit hole with many other videos to make other types of crochet flowers. Challenge yourself to try them if you haven’t already. Enjoy! Chichen Itza:

One of the Seven Wonders of The World ByAus…nScott6rdGrade6TassajaraHipps

This Spring Break, my family visited the Mayan Riviera and I got to see and learn about the Mayan Culture and visit Chichen Itza, which is one of the seven wonders of the world. I loved learning about how the Mayans lived. We also swam in Cenotes, drove an amphibious vehicle and swam in an underground river. The underground river had stalactites that were over 50 million years old. I learned about stalactites in Science and it was so cool to see them in real life.

Book Corner

A Great Teen Read! ByookBootCampwithpopa F Tam6Residentsince

The Saga of Darren Shan There’s nothing better than an exciting book to help kill time and keep the brain running! I recently discovered the book series The Saga of Darren Shan, by Darren Shan. It’s a 12-part book series that deals with a young teen named Darren Shan as he comes to terms with becoming a vampire. The series starts with the first book, Cirque du Freak. In the story, Darren starts off as a normal human being. One day, an illegal freak circus show comes to his town. Darren and his friends sneak in to watch. He becomes obsessed with wanting to own one of the arachnids in the show and decides to steal it. This plan goes horribly wrong when the spider comes close to murdering one of his close friends. Now to save his best friend, Darren has to make a deal with a vampire and lose everything he once loved.

This is such a great story for all young adults, teens, and even kids. It’s an easy read, but definitely not boring. The story is a big mosh pit of thriller, fantasy, adventure, and even a little horror. It’ll keep you on edge to see what happens next as the protagonist navigates through a completely new world. The series is even long enough to keep your kids entertained all summer! I highly recommend this series if you’ve got some young ones out of school for the summer. Thank you for reading! My interest in reading sparked sometime in elementary school. Teachers at the time assigned books as projects or were read as a class time activity. I got addicted right away, and began reading ahead of the assigned pages. Each month I will be making a book recommendation and a brief summary and review of its contents, in hopes of reintroducing a passion for reading to the community.
