Meet The Egkans: Three Decades of Blackhawk Living By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010

T

hirty-Two years ago, Gary and Diana Egkan found their dream home in Blackhawk, and they say they have loved watching the neighborhood grow and change over the past three decades. “We feel so fortunate to have found our beautiful home on Fox Creek Dr. We have great neighbors, some of whom have been here as long as we have; we have met wonderful people within Blackhawk over the years, many of whom have become dear friends. Sadly, some people have moved on, but we all seem to stay connected in various ways. The people within our neighborhood have truly become a great support group, exactly what you would hope to find in a community,” says Diana. The couple met at a restaurant in San Francisco. They happened to be dining near each other at John’s Grill on Ellis Street, the last Friday of 1984. Diana says she noticed Gary right away. “I saw this tall handsome man come through the door and sit down at the table behind me. Near the end of lunch, I excused myself and as I passed by Gary, I said hello. Our respective groups left the restaurant at the same time, and we proceeded to walk towards Market Street where we went our separate ways. As we approached the corner, I pulled a business card from my pocket to give to Gary but lost my nerve. Two of my colleagues happened to be going the same direction as Gary, and unbeknownst to me, Gary stopped one of

them and asked for my name and number. A few hours later, my colleague returned and handed Gary’s business card to me and said my future husband would be calling me. During our first date (lunch at the Sheraton Palace in SF) Gary talked extensively about his family. I knew he was the man for me. We were married in Napa (my hometown) 18 months later.” Gary was born and raised in a small town in the Los Angeles area. “My childhood home has been in our family since 1925 – it is a two-bedroom, one-bath house that I shared with my four siblings and parents. It was an idyllic childhood spent biking around the neighbor and playing whatever sport was in season. I spent countless hours in a nearby empty lot where the neighborhood kids would congregate to play ball – we made up the rules as we went along, and when the streetlights came on it was our signal to head home,” says Gary. Diana’s family has been in Napa for three generations. Her family’s life outside of Napa centered around the family boat. If the boat wasn’t docked at the St Francis Yacht Club, it could be found in the Delta where the family would spend their summers. “Our summers were spent on the boat where my brother and I would be classified as River Rats. Days were spent water skiing, floating down the river, occasional trips to Tinsley Island, exploring

8

the surrounding orchards and farms, and generally living the Delta Life,” says Diana. Diana received her undergraduate in Business and her Graduate Degree in Telecommunications. Diana’s education and interests led her to a career in High-Tech in Silicon Valley – she spent time with several firms spanning more than 20 years. After having children, she made the decision to become a stay-at-home mom, a role which she cherished and where she excelled! After receiving his degree in Business Finance with a minor in Economics, Gary enjoyed a very successful career in Banking, rising up through the ranks at Freddie Mac, and culminating in his last executive position as SVP National Sales for Radian Guaranty, Inc. Six months after their marriage, the Egkans purchased their first home which was in Foster City. They loved living on the water, but the local weather wasn’t totally conducive to year-round outdoor living. While visiting friends in Alamo one weekend, the Egkans fell in love with the weather and the area. They were ready to move out of the fog for warmer weather and beautiful summer evenings. “We knew we wanted to be in the Alamo/Danville area, and I knew I wanted new construction” says Diana. “We eventually narrowed our search to Blackhawk; community, outdoor living, and Club activities were important to NOVEMBER 2020

us, and Blackhawk was a perfect fit for what we were searching for,” says Gary. Gary and Diana say they have loved raising their two children in Blackhawk. “Chrissy, our 32-year old daughter lives in San Francisco, and our 29-year old son, Justin, lives in Walnut Creek. Both kids attended St Isidore’s School, Carondelet and De La Salle High Schools. Chrissy was a 4-year Varsity Volleyball player, and Justin was a 3-year Varsity Water Polo player. Both children were captains of their respective teams. Chrissy graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Justin graduated from the University of Arizona. Chrissy inherited her father’s aptitude for math and finance and currently works for First Republic Bank. Justin is pursuing a career in High-Tech Medical software sales,” says Gary. Gary and Diana have been active parishioners at St Isidore’s for 31+ years; Gary coaching CYO basketball and Diana involved in Bible Study and charity work, most notably Loaves and Fishes. After retiring nearly 3 years ago, Gary has renewed his love for tennis, which he put on hold for 20 years in order to help his children pursue their own athletic

endeavors. “I love playing tennis and have renewed old acquaintances, as well as made many new friends on the court. I continue to marvel at what a great group of people belong to Blackhawk Country Club,” says Gary. Diana is a member of Blackhawk Women, Blackhawk Bloomers Garden Club, and enjoys playing a little golf and tennis. Traveling is one of their favorite pastimes. “We love to travel and have been fortunate enough to have experienced so many wonderful trips, cruises, and cultures. We also love including our kids, and plan at least one family trip each year. Over the years we have traveled to most of the Western and Eastern European countries, as well as to Western Russia, Africa, and Central America. Although, at the end of the day, Italy holds a special place in our hearts, and is the one country we find ourselves revisiting time-and-again,” says Diana. Wherever they are in the world, the Egkans say they always look forward to returning home to Blackhawk. “We have so many wonderful neighbors and friends; we look forward to our return and seeing everyone,” says Diana. “Blackhawk is truly a magical place, with so many underlying qualities that were important to us as our kids were growing, and now even more so as we are enjoying our Golden Years,” says Gary

Six-month-old Stitch is a sweet young fellow who is looking for a quiet low-key forever home where he’ll have time to adjust to a new environment as well as different people. Once he develops his confidence, he’s a very friendly guy who loves being petted. He’s hoping that his new home has lots of toys for him to play with and some sunny windows he can settle next to for some serious sunbathing. Stitch has several vertebrae in his lower lumbar spine which are abnormal, causing an awkward gait. He can jump, run, and use the litter box despite this. The adoption fee for kittens (<6 months) is $150, for adult cats is $100, $25 off each for multiple cats/kittens, and senior cats (7+ years) and special needs cats are 50% off the adoption fee.

Natural Disasters and Your Swimming Pool By Jon Lubrano, President, Atlantis Pools Inc.

W

ith all the recent news regarding power outages, fires and earthquakes, I thought it would be good to address your personal swimming pool and how it could potentially be an asset during an emergency. In a fire or other emergency where there is no electricity or clean water, having gallons of pool water at your disposal can be a lifesaver, as long as you are prepared to use it. I recommend investing in a small, gas powered pump to quickly transport the water where you need it. In addition to a pump, you will need hoses if using your pool water to try and put out a fire. The pump will provide ample water pressure and the hoses will transport the water to your fire. If there were a situation where access to clean drinking water was limited, your pool water could be an emergency water source. Pool water is filtered and is chlorinated, (even a salt pool water is drinkable since the content is only 3000 ppm). You just need to be able to transport the water to where you need it like a shower or kitchen and a pump and hoses can make that happen.

Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses

I would advise purchasing some type of water filter for purifying the pool water, if consuming and the water has been sitting for days with no filtration. Hopefully your pool will only be used for your enjoyment, but it is better to be prepared for any disaster. Want assistance is selecting the right pump and hoses? Contact Atlantis Pools at (925) 736-0447, email info@ atlantispoolsdanville.com or visit us online at www. atlantispoolsdanville.com.

When Should You Sell Your RSUs? By Joe Morgan, CFP®, CFA, Principal: Best Financial Life, Resident since 2004

I

f stock awards are part of your regular compensation then treat them that way.

That is the theme you should follow when thinking about all that company stock you’ve been given over the years. One example is with RSUs. When your RSUs vest, you are immediately taxed on them. That means that, from a tax point of view, the company has just given you a paycheck and you’ve decided to put all of it in your company’s stock. Now let me ask, would you ever actually do that? I’m guessing no. So the best strategy (at least as a starting point) is to sell your RSUs as they vest. Now, what about all those RSUs that have built up over the years? Our Visit to Cypress Inn, Carmel By Jo Peek, Resident since 2014

T

his month, we traveled to Carmel. We stayed at the iconic Cypress Inn, well known for their dogfriendly atmosphere. Their patio is open for dining and they also offer room service. A hearty breakfast is included with each night’s stay. We stayed in Room 212, on the second floor where there is a nice patio for the 2nd floor guests. Each morning we walked to the beach. The little guy got his exercise and we got our steps in!

There is something about the ocean that relaxes and recharges you! We highly recommend a trip to Carmel and a stay at Cypress Inn.

Bali Hai Golf Club – A Tropical Paradise in Las Vegas By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012

B

ali Hai Golf Club was the only championship golf course located directly on the Las Vegas strip. The reopening of the Wynn Golf Club eliminated this distinction. Don’t think this convenience suggests a common golf experience. Bali Hai Golf Club attempts to recreate the beauty and drama of the South Pacific. An awardwinning clubhouse of Balinese architecture developed from ancient Hindu, and Japanese aesthetic principles continue the South Pacific theme. Palm Trees Galore Unfortunately, there is not a full driving range, a disappointment for such an impressive club. There are 2,500 soaring palm trees and over 100,000 tropical plants. They constructed seven acres of water features that affect play on eight holes. They accomplish the unique flavor in transition areas through the liberal additional of “Augusta-like” white sand and black volcanic rock outcroppings. Ranked #13 in Nevada according to Golf Magazine. The golf course sports four sets of tees from 5535 yards to 7002 yards. Selecting the right course length is often the foundation of a good experience on a new course. The lack of a fifth tee was noticeable as the middle tees are 6156 and 6601 yards respectively. Rather than 500-yard increments, five teeing grounds usually provide 375-yard increments resulting in better yardage fit for many. The course has five Par3s with four of them under 165 yards from the Gold tees. Conversely, six Par4’s over 420 yards from the Gold tees lengthen the course by two hundred yards. Countless palm trees and enormous swaths of white sand are immediately clear on the first tee. Being across the highway from the airport, airplanes taking off overhead are commonplace but were not a distraction. There are many white sand bunkers and waste areas. The beauty of these “beaches” is apparent but it’s a painful recovery. Views of the shiny golden towers of the Mandalay Hotel in the distance on many holes add a dramatic accent an already magnificently landscaped golf course. Watch the golfers on the sixteenth green when having lunch on the clubhouse patio. It’s a fabulous short Par3 with an island green. Bali Hai keeps a decades-long tradition of Las Vegas Strip golf. There is no dull golf here; you feel like you’re embracing the Vegas spirit. Dramatic views, great tunes from your golf cart speakers and a challenging golf course add up to “fun-in-the-sun.” Memorable and enjoyable. In the Shadow of the Glittering Mandalay Bay Hotel

If You Go: Course Info – Bali Hai Golf Club is a high-end public golf club with one golf course. Yardage: Four sets of tees span from 5535 yards to 7002 yards. From the back tees (Black) the rating is 73.0 and the slope is 130. The Silver tees are 6156 yards with a 68.6 rating with a slope of 113. Location – On the Las Vegas Strip across from the airport and near the Mandalay Bay Resort. Lodging – The Closest hotel is the Mandalay Bay. Plentiful hotels on the Strip, downtown, or west of Las Vegas. Fees: $99 to $249 depending on time of year and day.

PGA Hope By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990

H

all-of-famer MJ McColgan and a full field of golfers headed by Blackhawk Director of Golf, Tim Burr, enjoyed a fun filled day at the 4th annual PGA Hope Golf tournament on September 15, 2020. Blackhawk members Lydia and Mark Morasky founded this tournament 4 years ago that gives ‘hope’ to the real heroes in our world: wounded veterans. Board Member Mark Bryden and President Tim Burr helped plan a full day of activities that included golf, drinks, music, auction and an extravagant wine dinner sponsored by Davis Estates. The event was a huge success and next year promises to be even bigger with hopefully no COVID restrictions. Congratulations to all the sponsors and everyone that participated in this great event.

Things that Matter the Most When Selecting an Orthodontist By Richard Anthony, DDS MS, APC, Blackhawk Orthodontics

W

hether you are a child, teen, or adult, getting braces can be a daunting task. The most important first step is to find the right doctor. After all, you’ll be entrusting your doctor to perfect your most dazzling feature—your smile. Here is advice on how to find a talented orthodontist along with other important initial steps to take before selecting your doctor. Seek out recommendations on where to begin. Ask your dentist, friends, family members, co-workers, and neighbors who they know to be an excellent orthodontist. If a particular orthodontist’s name comes up multiple times, that is a good place to start. Also ask your dentist why they recommend that individual and if there are others they also would recommend. Online tools can also provide immediate recommendations based on experience and location. Make sure to also browse the doctor’s website and Yelp pages to review testimonials and gauge patient satisfaction. When talking to people find out their experiences and ask them pertinent questions. How friendly is the staff? Evaluate every action you have with the staff of the office, from the first phone call to the second you walk out the door. Are they helpful? Did you feel like they were too pushy? How accessible is the orthodontist? When you go in for the exam, watch the office run. Can you even find the orthodontist? Is he/ she interacting with the parents and patients? Do the patients and parents feel comfortable with the doctor? You should feel that the doctor is available to you at every appointment to explain what is happening in treatment and to listen to any of your concerns.

services? Are there extra charges for extended treatment? Ask who sees patients if there are after hour emergencies? Also, review the qualifications of the doctor. In the end, you are choosing an orthodontist—not an office, orthodontic technique, or particular bracket system. It takes technical skill and to produce an optimal result. Review the doctor’s education (especially dental school and e ynthesiz yer; @s e torch; iz orthodontic school) and experience. ; @synthesize prd;evLa es th @syn oad {

New Fraxis PRO Laser for Wrinkle Treatment By Dr. Stephen Ronan, MD FACS, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa

W

ould you like to improve your facial appearance‌ in person and on Zoom calls? Our new Fraxis PRO Laser treatment may be an ideal solution. Fraxis PRO is a brand new, state-of-the-art technology that features a fractional CO2 laser and RF microneedling all in one platform. With a single treatment you can refresh, refine, and revive your skin‌ and successfully address sun damage, scars, acne, fine lines and wrinkles. The procedure is usually done in the office without sedation. Before the procedure, a numbing cream is applied for increased comfort during the treatment. During the treatment you may feel slight pressure and tingling while the micro-sized needles gently penetrate the skin and deliver heat to stimulate collagen production. You can expect the procedure to take about 20 minutes. No dressings are required, and only a thin layer of skin care is applied before you are on your way. Typically, there is no downtime and you can return to your normal activities immediately following your treatment. Your skin will have

some moderate redness, which usually subsides by the next day. Patients can expect to see significant improvements after one session, but 2-3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is recommended to achieve optimal results. For more aggressive correction, higher energy can be used on the laser, prolonging recovery time. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for this exciting new Fraxis PRO treatment is to schedule either an in-person or virtual consultation. During a consultation, the procedure is explained in detail and all of your questions are answered. You will also learn what reasonable expectations you should have given your skin and goals. Because I am a Medical Director for Cutera, the company that developed the product, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa is one of only a few practices in the country to currently offer this exciting and effective new anti-aging treatment. If you are interested in learning more about this or other non-surgical or surgical procedures to improve your appearance, give us a call at 925.736.5757.

Crafting in November By Michelle Barry, Resident since 2018

H

ow are we going to make our socially distanced Thanksgiving special?

I’m asking all the family members for input this year. How do they want to spend the day? What do they want to eat? What do they want to create? I read that families are playing Pictionary, Win Lose or Draw and Bingo online with other family members via Zoom. I’ll put that bug in everybody’s ear. We’re also going to craft together. Here are some easy “family friendly” ideas: Resin Jewelry Michael’s is offering free on-line classes at michaels. com/onlineclasses. I attended

one on Zoom demonstrating how to create jewelry using UV Resin by Blue Moon Studio. I was surprised at how simple it was. I purchased three items to try it: UV Resin Hard Type, the UVResinCraft Fillable Metal Charms (rectangular shapes) and the Resin tape all by Blue Moon Studio. This brand of resin does not require mixing, which makes it highly desirable to use for me. It requires UV rays to harden. You just place it in the sun for five minutes and it hardens. I used tiny “real” flowers from our Lantana plant. It is really pretty to look at in the sun. Make sure an adult is around to supervise this project. Make Your Own Greeting Cards Here I used 5”X7” Blank White Greeting Cards from Amazon,

Rainbow colors of Washi tape, buttons, a Pima .05 black marker and some craft glue. That is all you need to create the cards above. You can search the internet for more ideas. Search Greeting Cards made with Washi Tape. I think kids will love creating their own.

I hope these ideas inspire you. If you do make something from my article, please post it on Instagram at #bhlmcrafts. I’d LOVE to see them!

Have a safe and relaxing Thanksgiving!

Neighborhood Concert COVID-19 Style By Megan Scott, Resident Since 2010

few members of the Fox Creek community gathered together recently for a driveway concert hosted by musician and Fox Creek resident Mark McLean. Neighbors gathered with their golf carts and folding chairs and celebrated live music and community in true “social distance” style. “I’ve been playing guitar since I was about 12 years old. Before I retired, I played at restaurants and wineries in the Sacramento area. Having recently moved to Blackhawk, I play at Bridges Restaurant and hope to play more postCovid. I just wanted to have an excuse to get the Fox Creek neighbors together while we finally had some clear skies and cooler weather,” says Mark.

No Regrets... A 5-Part series on Selecting the Best Shutter (Part 5 of 5) By Shem Isaac, Home Living Windows

With Warranties it’s important to remember that their purpose is to limit the liability of the company while making you feel warm and safe. Nearly all of the warranties out there will say something along the lines of “Limited Lifetime Warranty” and have a long list of exclusions. These warranties are for the original purchaser of the shutters so when you sell the house the new owner gets no warranty. I suggest you ask for a shutter with a transferable warranty so when you sell your home you are passing value on to the new owner. This is also a sign that the manufacturer is confident in their product as they’ll have to cover it for a longer time. How much do quality shutters cost? A lot, but you get what you pay for. I’d rather pay for quality one time than regret purchasing an inferior product forever. A common 3 by 5 foot window might be $300-450 for the lower end materials but cost $600-800 for a high quality shutter and $600-1,200+ for a premium wood shutter. How long will this take? Quality shutters take a lot longer than poor quality shutters because the shortcuts aren’t being taken. Each step adds days or weeks to the process. Poor quality shutters are typically available in 3-6 weeks, while quality shutters take 2-3 months. If you’ve ordered quality furniture before you already understand the difference as it’s common for furniture to take many months to deliver. But what a joy you have when it arrives, and the wait is soon forgotten as you enjoy the quality and beauty every day for a much longer time.

Rombauer Rocks! By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990

R

ecently we had the pleasure to visit Rombauer Vineyards. It is located on 40 acres of pristine beauty in sensational St. Helena. Founded by Koerner and Joan Rombauer in 1980, it is still managed by second and third generation family members. In our community of Blackhawk, Rombauer is known as a ‘cult’ wine and brings smiles of ‘joy’ to many residents. Our tasting was outside on a sun splashed day due to the Covid 19 rules. We enjoyed an extensive presentation of these wines by our knowledgeable host Kerry. The line-up included 2019 Sauvignon Blanc, 2018 Carneros Chardonnay, 2017 Reserve Chardonnay, 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2017 Merlot, 2018 Zinfandel and finished with a dessert wine appropriately named ‘Joy’. We liked the wines so much that we also joined their Chardonnay Club.

We also bought a selection of wines to participate in their Virtual 40th Anniversary Party with a group of friends. For lunch, we enjoyed a great meal and outside seating on the large and beautiful grounds of Farmstead Restaurant. Their beignets with warm caramel bourbon sauce are a ‘must do’ to complete any meal. They have an extensive, excellent menu and an attentive service staff that will satisfy any ‘foodie’. The beignets rival famous Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans that has been serving these passionate powdered desserts since 1862.

Skoshi’s Story By Janine Collins, Blackhawk resident since 1999

O

ctober puts Tri-Valley Animal Rescue in the midst of kitten season. Kittens can have their own set of challenges. This month is dedicated to Skoshi. Skoshi and her two sisters were first placed with a bottle baby foster. After they were weaned, they transferred to another foster to keep them until they were adopted. The very next day we received a call from the new foster - Skoshi was face down in her food bowl unable to use her legs, breathing heavily and running a fever. The foster rushed her to one of our most experienced kitten fosters and she immediately went to work to save her. Skoshi’s breathing was rapid and she was completely limp. Thanks to the quick action of her new foster contacting us, and our foster network, Skoshi immediately received fluids and medicine to cool her down. She was barely hanging on by a thread. Skoshi was almost lost twice as a bottle baby, but she pulled through. This was her third health scare. Skoshi’s fever finally broke and she was able to move around some and in a couple of days she could stand, albeit like a wobbly newborn. She has a little head shake and walks slightly stilted but she is running and playing with the other kittens. This little girl went from having

SKOSHI three close calls to a happy, loving, playful little girl. This story is why our fosters are dedicated to their work and we love them. The job is not always about getting the perfectly healthy, little bottle babies and kittens. It’s taking the ones people would just say “Sorry, they’re just too sick and I don’t think they’ll make it through the night”; the ones who look like they really don’t stand a chance and giving them that second chance. It’s hard work with sometimes sleepless nights and emotionally draining when you’ve done everything right and they still don’t make it. Even with these sad moments our fosters continue to volunteer because they truly believe it’s better to give that kitten a chance for a life and if it does pass away - it at least passes in a warm, loving home rather than alone in a field somewhere. Our fosters are constantly asked how they can keep doing this work. The answer they give is that it’s worth it because without Kitten Foster families, thousands of kittens wouldn’t be here for the people who need companionship: an elderly person, a small child, the person who just walked in the door after a bad day at work. The kittens become family members. We know we are saving them, but they are also saving us.

Avocado Spinach Salad By Parisa Z. Ambwani, Resident since 1983

Serves 4 • ½ pound spinach (green leaves), washed, pat-dried, chopped • ½ cup fresh water • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, untoasted • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped • ½ teaspoon brown rice flour • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 teaspoon honey OR raw sugar • ¼ teaspoon sea salt • 1 dash black pepper, freshly ground • 2 ripe avocados* cut in half, and remove the pits • 2 teaspoons lemon juice OR lime juice Garnish (optional): • 1 teaspoon chive OR green onion, finely chopped In a covered saucepan, simmer spinach in water over medium heat. Simmer for 4 minutes. Strain off the water and let spinach cool. In frypan, stir sesame seeds, garlic and flour into heated olive oil for

few seconds. Add spinach, honey, salt, and pepper. Simmer slowly for 4 minutes as you are stirring and let mixture cool. With a small spoon carefully scooped out flesh from avocado shell, smash (shaved avocado flesh) with lemon juice and mix thoroughly with cooled spinach mixture. Spoon this mixture back into half avocado shell. Garnish with chive and serve. Note: Another attractive way to present this salad is to line up inside avocado shell with a piece of green lettuce which is slightly larger than avocado shell and fill lettuce with mixture and serve. *The Hass avocado has excellent flavor and rich buttery flesh. Avocado flesh darkens quickly when exposed to air. Therefore, once an avocado is cut, wrap it in heavy plastic wrap and place in refrigerator to prevent flesh from discoloring. Research shows that the avocado is a good source of monounsaturated fat and fiber. Avocado with its lush buttery texture and mild nutlike flavor, ripens in hot summer. Holistic Journey: When you engage yourself in the process of healing, take time to carefully study and consider new ideas that are sprouting all around you. These ideas may prove to be the new seeds of your nourishment. © Parisa Z. Ambwani-----------All rights reserved www.enlightenedrecipes.com

Welcome to Admissions Season! By Jill Tripaldi, St. Isidore School Admissions Director

Y

ou may have recently noticed that schools in your area have begun inviting potential parents to upcoming open houses and information meetings. It’s hard to believe that planning for next school year is already underway; you may have just finished your back to school to-dos for the current school year, but most private schools’ admissions processes typically start about a year in advance of enrollment. Fall is the time they offer events to learn about their campuses, meet the staff, and hear specifics about the programs they offer. Application deadlines can vary, but most are due in December or January, and acceptance letters are typically mailed in March. If you are interested in finding out more about the local private schools in your area, please take note of the events happening in your area.

Where to Start Finding the right school for your child, regardless of their grade, can be exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. However, it is a

great time to examine what is important to your family. What environment is right for your child to learn and grow? Are you looking for a rigorous academic program? Do you want a spiritual component? Does a strong community feel essential to you? Remember that just like each child, each school is unique and offers different experiences. Unfortunately, the pandemic has changed the way we can tour schools right now. Many schools have temporarily halted tours and shadow days and are turning to virtual open houses and information meetings. Some administrators are offering live Questions & Answer sessions via Zoom and Google Meet. You can also learn a lot about a school’s climate by visiting its website and social media platforms, which allow you to see the curriculum, activities, and outreach that students are offered. At the end of your investigation, you should ask yourself whether you can picture your family as part of the community.

What to Expect Students are typically asked to take a readiness test and come to an interview conducted by teachers who are trained to observe ageappropriate academic and social skills. It is essential to keep this as low stress as possible for the child. Students should not need to prep ahead of time—keeping things casual benefits everyone involved. These assessments are conducted to make sure that the school is the right fit for your child. Remember to take the process in stride; finding the school that is the right fit for your child and family can take time. If you need any advice or guidance during the process, please feel free to reach out to me directly at admissions@stisidore.org. I wish you a wonderful admissions season and continued health and safety!

Reading Corner

November Book Review: Crazy Rich Asians By Iman Simab, Resident Since 2003

C

razy Rich Asians, by Kevin Kwan, is another book I would recommend for adults to read because it has humor and really gives some insight to the Asian culture. I would not recommend it for children since there are some mentions of inappropriate language. The story is about a young girl, named Rachel Chu, whose boyfriend invites her to accompany him to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. While in Singapore, Rachel reunites with her old college friend, Peik Lin, and also starts meeting some of her boyfriend’s family. It is soon revealed that Rachel’s boyfriend, Nick Young, actually comes from an extremely wealthy family, which he never told Rachel about, and Rachel finds herself having a hard time fitting in with the high society. What I like about the book is how it includes footnotes that offer translations or explanations regarding the Asian culture and how the story shifts from different perspectives. For example, one chapter is from Rachel’s perspective, and then the next chapter shifts to Nick’s perspective. We also get the perspective of Nick’s mother, Eleanor Young, and Nick’s cousin, Astrid Leong. Astrid’s story is a unique case because, even though she is an heiress, she ended up marrying a man from a humbler background. Here we get the sense that Astrid’s family looks down at her husband, Michael Teo, and how it starts to affect their own marriage. Michael and Astrid’s relationship gives the readers an idea on how marriage might be like for Nick and Rachel if Nick’s parents don’t support their relationship. Eleanor’s perspective also shows how her own mother-in-law didn’t initially support her relationship with Nick’s father and how she had to make many sacrifices just to finally be accepted in the family. I found the book very captivating and it even made me want to visit Singapore for myself to see if everything is as extravagant as it is portrayed in the book. The ending also made me curious to see how everything plays out in the next book, which is titled China Rich Girlfriend. Iman Simab graduated from UC Berkeley in 2016 with a degree in English and Journalism. She is passionate about reading and writing. She is always looking for new books to read and hopes to become an author someday. In the meantime, she works as a teacher for Kids’ Country and a library aide for Dougherty Station Library in San Ramon. Iman grew up in Danville and attended Monte Vista High School. She also loves hiking the trails of the Bay Area and exploring nature.

Life through a Lens

Exploring Big Sur By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015

I

n early October, my family and I drove to Big Sur, located on the scenic Highway 1, for my daughter’s seventeenth birthday. We were totally blown away by the 90-mile stretch of the unmatched natural grandeur of the stunning Pacific coastline with dramatic cliff side views.

80 feet into a pristine beach in an enchanting cove- a photographer’s paradise and it surely reminded me of Hawaii. Another highlight of our trip was Point Lobos State Reserve with amazingly breathtaking sea cliff vistas overlooking the vibrant blue coastal waters, well manicured hiking trails, ancient trees- the outstanding Monterey Cypress (Cypress Grove trail), California seal lions (Sand Hill trail/Sea Lion Point), Sea Otters (China Cove) and abundant nesting birds (Bird Island trail/Pelican Point). I was in awe of China Cove, a brilliant emerald green Cove with a tiny pocket beach surrounded by high Rock walls on three sides like a boxed Canyon. And it’s here we caught the sea otters playing in the kelp bed - a rare sight to behold! All-in-all, Big Sur(prise) was the perfect little weekend getaway-right in my backyard, less than three hours from Blackhawk, Danville.

Our first stop was at the windy Hurricane Vista Point, where we clicked a few selfies with the famous arch shaped Bixby Bridge, (the most photographed bridge in California due to its aesthetic design and picturesque setting) with magnificent views of the blue water beaches and rugged shoreline. I was very excited since this iconic landmark and Big Sur star was featured in one of my favorites “Big Little Lies” - the hit HBO series. Another new sensation is the beautiful Pitkins Curve Bridge, south of Big Sur, near Limekiln State Beach. Driving through the rock shed/ tunnel, we saw steep rock faces on one side and the magnificent ocean on the other side through the arches- definitely a wow factor! The Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park was closed due to severe storm damage from last year but we were lucky to get a sneak peak at the shockingly beautiful McWay Falls, from one of the overlooks on Highway 1, dropping around

As an aspiring photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity!

The Art of the Stack By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry and The Forevermark Boutique at Broadway Plaza

A

s the holiday season approaches, stackable rings are still one of the hottest trends and we just love it! Whether you’re going on a date, heading to work or a Zoom meeting, maybe even a socially-distanced girls’ night out, there is a stackable ring style that is appropriate for every occasion. Padis Jewelry carries a variety of stackable rings, from simple to ornate, and we encourage experimentation with mixing and matching them with other stackable rings in your jewelry collection. Here’s what you need to know to help you create your own personalized stack:

Begin with your favorite piece:

It could most definitely be your diamond engagement ring, a most frequently worn ring, a family heirloom, or anything else that is close to your heart. It deserves to find the most important spot. No matter how big or small, it needs to stand out, which takes us to the next point, balance.

Aim for balance:

It doesn’t matter if half of your ring stack involves gold or silver or white-rose colored bands, the key is to aim for a balance so that every piece looks like it was meant to be there and stacked strategically. If mix and match is not your style, you can always opt for a more polished look by going with a single color scheme. The only thing you will have to take care of is to ensure that a proportion is being maintained and not all thick or sleek pieces are stacked together.

Mix & Match

Building different stacked looks is a perfect way to let your individuality shine. But sometimes, figuring out what ring goes with what can be stressful. Start simple and don’t be afraid to experiment. Try pairing a simple band with an east-west ring. Or, wear a bold chunky ring next to a delicate diamond eternity band. Throw in some larger statement rings. You get to make your own rules.

Pops of Color

Bring on the color! Rose, yellow, and white gold or platinum metals can play beautifully with each other. Wear one band style in multiple metal colors or create a little contrast by wearing rings from different designers and collections. You could even add a colored gemstone ring into your favorite stack with birthstones to represent children or special occasions. The combinations you can create are endless!

Don’t leave your thumb or pinky bare:

You can’t leave them bare. If not on both, as they may start to get in the way, you must choose between your thumb or pinky finger to complete the overall look. This will add a little more interest to the design you have set.

How many are too many?

We get asked this question a lot, and our philosophy is simple: the more bands, the better! With so many occasions to celebrate (new babies, anniversaries, birthdays, etc.), the perfect stack grows with you.

Ready to rock this style?

Come visit us and try a variety of rings on! Our non-commissioned jewelry experts are ready to guide you to the perfect choice in a clean, safe and socially distanced environment. Get started by scheduling a visit to the Padis Jewelry flagship showrooms in San Francisco, our brand new Padis Jewelry & Tasting Room in downtown Napa or our beautiful Forevermark Boutique in Walnut Creek’s Broadway Plaza.
