Indigo Moments

It’s the season of giving thanks and giving back, and we’re thrilled to be getting into the spirit. For starters, we try to always feature Blackhawk residents practicing kindness, and this month you will learn about Kalsi Family: Celebrating One Year in Blackhawk.

Of course, this time of year can be pretty stressful for some of us. If you feel the need to plan your next get away, Mike McColgan tells us all about his recent trip Atelier Crenn: 3 Star Michelin Experience in San Francisco.

Here’s to a generous season!

We are devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share, please email me at mscott@bestversionmedia.com.

Meet the Kalsi Family: Celebrating One Year in Blackhawk

Highschool sweethearts, Indeep and Jitender, have been in love more than half their lives. Jitender met Indeep in Chandigarh, India where he participated in a motocross event. Sparks flew between the two young students, and they became friends and developed a romance shortly after. “We have been together for over 25 years and married for 13 years. I have known Jitender for more than half of my life and love how we were friends before getting married. I can share everything with him and do not think twice about how he will perceive things,” says Indeep.

Indeep and Jitender were both born and raised in northern India. Shortly after marrying, they made the move to the United States. Indeep has a Master’s Degree in IT Management from Golden Gate University, San Francisco. She manages strategic programs for Thousand Eyes (now Cisco). She says her real passions lay more on the agile side. “I love my role as I work with multiple teams and enjoy working on programs that help the engineering teams.”

Jitender also has a Master’s degree in IT from Pune, India. Before moving to the US, he used to travel for work and was a frequent visitor to the bay area. After getting married, Jitender and Indeep decided to make the bay area their new home. He currently works with Nvidia and manages their digital platform programs. He is also an agile evangelist and enjoys working with distributed teams across the globe.

The family is completed by two children, one-year-old Nyra and eight-year-old Kiaan. Kiaan enjoys outdoor sports and loves playing soccer, baseball, tennis and golf. He is a Lego enthusiast and has been building since he was 2 years old. His Lego collection varies from Star Wars to Minecraft to Jurassic World and many more. Nyra on the other hand is a little explorer, cheerful and a

bundle of joy for the whole family. She enjoys her brother’s cuddles and they both share an amazing bond. Nyra loves music and likes to rock to her favorite music beats “wheels on the bus and hello everybody.” She is also exploring her big brother’s robots and dinosaur collections.

Making time for hobbies and passions is important to Indeep and Jitender. “We both love to cook, travel, watch movies, and spend time with family. Jitender is a DIYer and likes to keep doing small projects in and around the house. Besides his projects, Jitender is a gadget aficionado and would like to own every gadget on the planet. He is also into collecting vinyls and is trying to build a collection of vinyls, a legacy which he inherited from his dad.

Indeep enjoys organizing, design and decor, trying new cuisines, listening to music and being outdoors. “Jitender and I really enjoy cooking a meal together, from picking out new recipes from our favorite shows, sipping the wine and making jokes helps de-stress us,” says Indeep.

Indeep and Jitender love to travel and have been looking forward to getting back to their travel regimen post covid and the baby.

They have been to multiple countries across Asia and Europe. Their most memorable vacations were a family vacation to Udaipur, a city of lakes and Rajput-era palaces. Traveling in tuk-tuks to enjoying rajasthani delicacies and royal hospitality was the highlight of the trip. Another fun vacation was Indeep’s family reunion in London and then traveling to Switzerland and France for her sister’s 40th birthday. “Switzerland and Bollywood have a strong connection and I was able to fulfill some of my childhood Bollywood fantasies while in Switzerland,” adds Indeep.

New to the Blackhawk community, Indeep says they were introduced to it through friends. “We moved to Danville seven years ago and came across this beautiful community through one of our friends. In 2021, during the pandemic, we were expecting our daughter and decided to start looking for homes in this neighborhood. After looking at a few houses, we came across a house that had a beautiful location and views. We knew it was our dream home, but it did need a few changes and updates. I loved the challenge as I’m passionate about designing, so despite being pregnant,

we decided to move forward with the house. Our daughter Nyra was twomonths old when we moved into our home and every day since then, we have loved our decision to move here. Our kids love the open floor plan, Kiaan loves the area and has made many friends already. We all love the community factor and feel blessed to be surrounded by like-minded and good-hearted people. Blackhawk is an amazing, beautiful neighborhood and we love being in such a friendly environment.”

Atelier Crenn:

3-Star Michelin Experience in San Francisco

In Cow Hollow, San Francisco, Atelier Crenn is a restaurant in the city that had our curiosity peaked. Based on the concept of Poetic Culinaria, we looked forward to experiencing what the The World’s “Best” Female Chef served.

The meal began with a Happy Birthday card personally signed by chef Dominique Crenn. She also came to our table and introduced herself before our dinner. She is a worldly person who grows her fresh produce from her 4-acre farm located in Sonoma.

Our attentive server Antoine then presented us with a ‘poem’ that described each of the entrees that read:

“Summer has come with its cool breeze

By the shimmer of black pearls, tumbling in the ashen cloud See-the efflorescing beauty with rosy cheeks rises

And summer star’s glow, though hidden in the summer gray

As delicate creatures of green and blue surface to bloom

For the verdant bounty of the gatherer’s harvest in caring hands Gleaming through the canopy, an orb so felicitous and splendid Summer has come and is full of sweet surprises

Sweetness, bounty, thanks.”

The tasting menu was served outside the restaurant on the terrace that included a Kir Breton, white sturgeon caviar tart with gold essence, miyagi oyster with smoked crème fraiche, tomatoes served on top of a tomato sorbet with nori, trout mousse with bread soaked in squid ink and brioche with house-cultured butter. All the dishes were perfectly balanced and paired beautifully with the wines. Service was beyond outstanding.

Dominique Crenn moved to San Francisco in 1988 and loved the city. She made her name at Luce in the Intercontinental Hotel, where she earned her first Michelin star. In 2012 she became the first female chef in the US to achieve 2 stars. In 2016 she was voted as The World’s Best Female Chef and in 2018 Atelier Crenn earned the three Michelin stars.

In conclusion, we would highly recommend this restaurant for a very special occasion. It is no wonder that Dominique has a 3-star Michelin rating.

Rise Festival

Igot to go to The Rise Festival with my family and my best friend Christian and his family last month. It was in the desert near Las Vegas. When we got there, we each got two lanterns and pens. We were told to write our intentions on one lantern and things we want to release on the other lantern. (I just drew my favorite characters on mine).

Once the sun went down, thousands of people lit their lanterns and watched them float into the sky. There was music playing and a fireworks show. We all thought it was magical and can’t wait to do it again.

Giving

Barkin’ In Blackhawk Winners!

Wow! Thank you, Blackhawk Community, for entering a lineup of awesome dogs this year in our annual photo contest fundraiser. You helped us raise $4,000! Join us in congratulating the following winners:

Fashionista

Winner: Joey Human: Dianne Yamada Joey’s all dressed up and looking forward to attending the Fur Ball, Humane Society Silicon Valley’s annual black tie gala. Joey, a rescue dog, loves to party and celebrate his furever family!

Naughtiest

Winner: Peeky

Human: Jo Peek

Peeky was picked up wandering the streets of San Leandro and was brought to the shelter in Dublin. When I saw him, he had JUST arrived. There was no option to hold him or play with him. I could only view him in his cage from a distance and make a decision. I was told to come back the next day because there would be a lottery, as there was SO much interest in him. The full story is available upon request... and it’s a doozy! The next day, he had his necessary shots and came home with me. He is the perfect dog, except for the occasionally dog toy destruction!

Best Granddog

Winner: Tas

Human: Susan Moore

Tas is our 8-year-old Golden Doodle Grand Dog who brings pure joy to our lives. She has so often brightened our days with her unconditional love and her uncanny ability to know just when you need her affection most. We love our Tas.

Dynamic Doggie Duo

Winners: Bailey and Patch Humans: Lydia and Amy Bailey and Patch are both rescues. Bailey is ~9 yrs and Patch is ~3 yrs, They have grown to love each other and find a new cuddle position every morning.

My Best Friend

Winner: Matilda Mae, Jr Human: Tracey Lauer

Mattie would love to win this contest because she has a true sense of entitlement. Her demands are endless and she has clearly won the battle of “who is in charge here?” She has been known to “tap” on complete strangers if she knows they are packin’ biscuits. She has also chased people down the street who were innocently passing by our home. If you are wondering if the police have been at our home, the answer is yes. If you are wondering if my children turned out any better, the answer is marginally. Clearly, you expected me to put Matilda in the “Naughtiest” category. Never gonna happen. She wouldn’t allow it.

16 NOVEMBER 2022
Back in Our Community

Best Traveller

Winner: Colby

Human: Anne and Paul Kuelz

Colby is our perfect dog. He came from the 2nd litter of our dear Madison, and he travels everywhere with us. We drive him to Seattle frequently to visit our daughter, Jessica. Colby brings us and everyone around him great joy!

Winner: Scout Human: Kay

Scout is our female yellow lab, full of joy and energy. She bring us so much joy; she is lovable, likes to learn, is a strong athletic girl, and is loyal to “her pack” (us). She is all lab and all about retrieving! She loves retrieving –balls, sticks, logs, whatever and whenever. She likes a challengethe bigger the better - she thinks logs are sticks! Look at the picture carefully to see the size of what we threw. We threw this log out in middle of the water; she brought it straight back to us on command, all grins - and was willing to do it again…and again….and again. We love her and her companionship; she says the feeling is mutual.

Precious Puppy

Winner: Milo

Human: Susan

Milo is our precious new Australian Labradoodle Grand Puppy. People often mistake him in photos for a stuffed animal! His likeness to the iPhone emoji makes us chuckle. We look forward to many years of love and fun with our adorable grand-puppy.

Ferrari Club of America –Pacific Region

When Ferrari comes to town there is guaranteed to be sleek sports cars, the unique sound of throaty engine notes and the color Rosso Corsa. Rosso Corsa is so prevalent that I thought that all pictures in this month’s column would be Ferrari Racing Red, but there were too many beauties to choose from. The date was April 10, 2022, and the Ferrari Club of AmericaPacific Region (ferraripacific.org) brought their highperformance vehicles to the Blackhawk Museum. The Pacific region began in 1975, spanning the northern areas of California and Nevada and has grown to 585 members making it among the most active of the Ferrari Club of America’s regions. The Ferrari Mission Statement, “We build cars, symbols of Italian excellence the world over, and we do so to win on both road and track.” So, the Ferrari that we see cruising through town is not just tantalizing to look at but has a Formula One racing pedigree second to none, winning 242 Grand Prix races. Mission accomplished.

November Craft: Drawing and Painting with Ink

Drawing fun with instant results! This month I tried Lisa Congdon’s Inktober class, Inktober Daily Challenge: 31 Days of Drawing and Painting with Ink, on the CreativeBug.com website. I was pleased with how simple her designs were to replicate. The class is a daily challenge class, which means you tackle one drawing a day. It will only take up about 10 minutes per day to complete one of the drawings and achieve results you’ll be happy with. It’s a small time commitment and it uses up very little space and very few supplies to get started.

While running through each daily challenge, I learned how to make simple shapes and objects using graphic elements. I am happy with how they turned out. I used

Micron pens and India inks on watercolor paper to achieve this outcome.

How much is Creativebug? Right now you can sign up at creativebug.com/trial and take their classes for free for 60 days. If you like their classes and want to continue your subscription here is the cost: The standard Creativebug “Unlimited” subscription costs $7.95 a month, with a slightly more expensive “Unlimited Plus” plan costing $9.95 a month. You can also get a 40% discount for paying annually.

I think you’ll love Lisa Congdon’s video classes if you give them a try. Lisa used to live in Northern California and now resides in Portland, Oregon.

Once you take the sessions you will notice

Lisa Congdon’s designs in her many books, on stationery, coffee mugs, t-shirts, pillows and much more.

If you try her classes, please post your work on #littlegoslingstudio and I will post mine on @littlegoslingstudio. I’d love to see them.

Best, Michelle Barry

Mustang Soccer 2022 News

Lisa Cote-Luengo has been a part of our local community for a large majority of her life. After moving from Southern California to Danville at the age of 8, she spent her youth playing Al Caffodio Soccer, the previous name for the competitive division at Mustang SC. Lisa has 12 Varsity letters competing in four varsity sports at Monte Vista High School; Cross Country, Soccer, Softball, and Tennis. She went on to play collegiate soccer at the University of California, Berkeley, and graduated in 1994. After graduation, Lisa’s career path took her to Atlanta, GA, then San Francisco, but she later returned to Danville in 2005. It was in 2005 that she reconnected with her now husband, Chris Luengo, also a Danville native, San Ramon Valley High School alum, and fellow Al Caffodio alum. Chris and Lisa met in 1980 while at a soccer tournament in Sacramento but it was not until she returned to the East Bay that they started dating in 2005.

Lisa’s fondest memory of playing Mustang Soccer is “traveling to all the away tournaments and spending time with my teammates. I also remember watching the parents and noticing they were having just as much fun as us. My life has come full circle as I now get to

Lisa is currently the JV Girls Soccer Coach at Monte Vista High School and has enjoyed coaching at MV on and off since 2007.

Because of her numerous accomplishments and contributions, Lisa Cote-Luengo was inducted into the Monte Vista High School Hall of Fame on Thursday, October 13, 2022. Please join us in congratulating her on this prestigious honor!

The HOX Swim Team Updates

Happy Harvest from the HOX! We can not believe that it’s that time of year where people are out shopping for the holidays and preparing for their annual turkey trots. Although, driving thru the gates these days, the local turkeys don’t seem to be too worried about their thanksgiving plans. The HOX board is busy working behind the scenes preparing for the next summer swim season. There is no rest for the weary! This is the time of year when the board is busy selecting the theme from all the submissions from our team members. Once the theme has been selected, then the real work begins for our board of all the planning, how a theme is going to play out. Shirts and product must get ordered, car magnets, banners, etc. Months of planning in order to make sure everything is ready for the theme to be revealed to the team at our March launch party.

The HOX Swim Team is proud to recognize the following Fall swim team members who have qualified for the Junior Olympic Championships in a total of 10 events: Tatum Akey, Harlow Heiden, Isabella Valdes and Lucas Tsubota, they’ll be training and cheering on other teammates to make their cuts in October and November, in time for the JOs in Santa Clara, December 2-4. GO HOX!

Our Fall swim program ends Friday 11/18. The Fall swim program extension for JO qualifiers and select age groups will continue training through the end of the year.

The Blackhawk Country Club High School Prep swim program will begin on November 21st and end in early February, details to be published soon.

We hope you are having a great fall season, whether it be in the pool or not. GO HOX!

Looking Refreshed and Revitalized for Fall

If you want a refreshed appearance for fall, we offer multiple cosmetic procedures that can help you achieve a more youthful look. Below are a few common cosmetic procedures that will leave you looking more radiant in time for the cooler weather and holiday season.

Blepharoplasty. Also known as an eyelid lift, blepharoplasty is a procedure that corrects droopy eyelids. A blepharoplasty can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids to eliminate excess skin and fat from the area. An eyelid-lift procedure will make you appear more alert and will rejuvenate the delicate eye area, giving you a more youthful appearance.

A blepharoplasty generally takes about 30 minutes to complete. You may experience some swelling and bruising around your eyes after your surgery. Cold compresses will alleviate the swelling.

Rhinoplasty. A rhinoplasty, which is also commonly referred to as a “nose job,” is a routine cosmetic procedure that corrects the shape of the nose so that it is proportionate to the rest of the face. There are two types of techniques that can be performed during a rhinoplasty: the closed technique and the open technique.

I perform an Open or Structure Rhinoplasty. This more modern type of rhinoplasty is more precise and leaves the nose much stronger than the older style Closed of Reduction Rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty scars hide well and are barely noticeable. Often times the internal (functional) issues, like obstruction and septal deviation, can be addressed along with the external or aesthetic concerns.

Generally, a rhinoplasty takes 60-90 minutes to complete, and you should plan to take at least a week off work and/or your normal activities while you recover.

Face and Neck Lift. As we age, the skin on our face and neck loses its elasticity. Loss of fat and muscle tone also occur naturally with the aging process. A facelift combined with a neck lift can help reverse the inevitable effects of aging and give you a more youthful appearance.

As opposed to a traditional facelift, which involves a long scar including the hairline, I do a more modern short scar technique. The incision is only from the sideburn to just behind the ear. We typically add fat to the lower lid and cheekbone areas to replace some of the fat that is naturally lost over time. The short scar surgery has a shorter recovery, less scar and looks more natural. We add PRP (platelet rich plasma) and thrombin to create a glue that limits swelling and bruising while speeding recovery.

Face and neck lift procedures can take 1-3 hours to complete depending on the complexity of the surgery. Each face procedure is unique and requires different methods and lengths of recovery time. We will discuss these aspects of the procedures during our initial consultation.

Schedule a free consultation. If you are interested in learning more about blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, face or neck lifts, or any other cosmetic procedure, please contact our office at 925-7365757 to schedule a complimentary consultation.

A Better Way to Buy and a Simpler Way to Sell

It’s not so hard to buy your next home before selling your current one

“Should I buy before I sell?” is one of the most common questions I receive as a mortgage professional. While the answer hasn’t always been easy, new loan options have made buying before selling more beneficial than ever before.

Reasons for buying before selling

Everyone’s circumstances are different. But buying before selling has its advantages, especially for people in the following situations:

• Moving down: Seasoned homeowners looking to purchase in a retirement community, be closer to the grandkids, or just have a smaller single-story home with less maintenance.

• Moving up: Soon-to-be new parent? Purchase a larger home before selling the current house to deliver a smooth and unrushed experience for mom and baby.

• Moving over: Make the move to another state before having to sell the current home, then embark on the road trip under your terms.

• Moving out: Soon-to-be divorced? Refinance the departing spouse off the loan or buy the new home before the spousal and child support are usable for conventional financing.

A simple process

Buying before you sell takes four easy steps:

• Buy your new home before listing your current home

• Move into your new home at your leisure

• Renovate, stage, and sell your old home for top dollar

• Tell everyone how easy it is!

Should you buy before you sell?

If your situation is the right fit, we can originate a short-term bridge loan against your new property, existing property, or both – making sure you get from here to there as smoothly as possible. Benefits to this homebuying approach include:

• Preview homes you want to buy now

• Make non-contingent offers in a competitive market

• Stay in your current home while remodeling the new one

• Avoid interim expenses

• List your home fully staged to increase the resale price

You can do this – and we can help

At CCM, we provide fast and simple solutions for homeowners. If you have substantial equity in your existing home and want to buy a replacement before having to sell or even list it, we’re ready to get it done. Contact us today to get started!

Tri-Valley Animal RescueGiving them another chance

Lola - East County Animal Shelter Adoptable Dog -- Looking For Her Forever Home!

Did you know I have been considered a tennis ball champion for my mad fetch skills? Are you an active person or family looking for someone to get outside and play with? My name is Lola. I absolutely love tennis balls and squeaky balls. When I retrieve the ball (although I have been trying to master getting two in my mouth at once), I bring it back. I listen when told to drop the ball and sit. I am patient when told to wait while someone picks up the ball to throw it. I am a shepherd/pit bull mix around 9 months old and weigh about 50 lbs. My previous family had to move and were not able to take me, but I am looking to give unconditional love to a new forever family. My volunteer friends adore me and tell me what a good girl I am. They say I need some work on walking on a loose leash, but I do

like pets and treats and am sure with training, I will learn. They also say I have the best smile and am such a pretty, sweet girl. Hoping you will come meet me soon at the East County Animal Shelter, 4595 Gleason Drive, Dublin, CA between the hours of 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.

Sniffles - Tvar Foster Kitten Program

Meet Sniffles! She was rescued from the East County Animal Shelter when she was alone at only six weeks old and was suffering from a long-term and serious kitten cold. Sniffles is an incredibly sweet and outgoing kitten who just wants to share her love with everyone. She expresses her gratitude for being rescued and treated every day with sweet meows and cuddle sessions. Sniffles will be available for adoption soon. She is spayed microchipped, current on vaccinations and tested negative for FIV/FeLV.

TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) - Giving them Another Chance

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted.

We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens and the Public.

The holidays are just around the corner now. Many of us are thinking of how we might be able to lend a helping hand and give back to the community during a very festive time of year. Two local organizations here in Danville are joining forces this year to make an even more significant impact. Aloha Kiss-Arthur Kong Memorial Foundation and The Hope Avenue organization will be assembling holiday gift bags for three possibly 4 assisted living facilities within the immediate Danville area. ten years. The Hope Avenue organization is comprised of a group of high school interns.who want to give back to the community with an emphasis on the senior community.

In addition to the beanies and holiday ornament, the holiday gift bag will be filled with a granola bar, trail mix, possibly an individual cookie and moisturizing lotion. Both Aloha Kiss and The Hope Avenue need assistance in procuring these gift items. Both organizations would be very grateful for any help in being able to secure the allotment of inventory to make this a successful project. Mammoth Dunes at Sand Valley

Mammoth Dunes Golf course in central Wisconsin, designed by the emerging architect David McLay Kidd, opened in August 2018 to rave reviews. Complementing the sensational Sand Valley course designed by Coore-Crenshaw, which opened in 2017, they vault Wisconsin into one of the top state golf destinations in the country. Wisconsin already claimed six spots on the Golf Magazines 2016-17 top 100 public courses before these two courses opened.

Sand Valley is in a remote area of central Wisconsin. Hence, a variety of lodging on site makes this a destination resort. They added grass tennis courts and plan to expand the range of recreational activities. Caddies are available and encouraged. Pull carts with enormous wheels for navigating sand are available for $10. The range is 1/2 mile from the clubhouse, and they offer shuttles. Coore-Crenshaw also completed a tremendous Par3 course called the Sandbox. Unlike many Par3 courses, this one is a fantastic challenge and incorporates the same links design elements. They offer small Sunday golf bags for the few clubs you need.

Mammoth Dunes Golf Course

Sand, sand, sand - that characterizes the terrain encountered at both Sand Valley golf courses. Think Bandon Dunes of the Midwest - without the ocean. Today, the extent of manicuring does not define the quality of the course. Mammoth Dunes is a minimalist design, the landscaping is natural and less manicured, and the golf is an adventure.

David McLay Kidd has developed his design philosophy over the years, from original designs as tough challenging courses that beat up golfers to incorporating links design elements that allow average golfers to score. The other course designed by Coore-Crenshaw, Sand Valley, is more demanding, with holes that are less memorable.

Greens are large, hard but accessible for the average golfer. The green at the 18th hole is reportedly 18,000 square feet! Manicured green-side slopes allow many shot types. Beware of the false fronts.

Mammoth Dunes golf course incorporates deep, strategically placed bunkers. The green-side bunker at the Par5 Hole #7 is nasty. Numerous large waste bunkers cause an illusion of small fairways. There is consistently more room that appears. A permanent bar with a friendly bartender on the Eleventh Tee is a delightful addition. If you love fantastic links golf, but are frustrated by their difficulty, play Mammoth Dunes. We scored one of our best rounds of the year.

If You Go:

Course Info - Sand Valley includes two eighteen-hole golf courses and a 17-hole short course. The original course, Sand Valley designed by Coore-Crenshaw, opened in 2017 and Mammoth Dunes, designed by David McLay Kidd, opened in 2018. The 1652-yard Sandbox short course designed by Coore-Crenshaw opened in 2018.

Location - One hour south of Central Wisconsin airport (CWA), and one and one-half hours north of Madison, Wisconsin airport (MSN).

Lodging - Sand Valley lodge rooms, cottages, and 2–4-bedroom residences are on site. The nearest hotels are fifteen miles away.

Doggie Detectives –

Service Dogs detect COVID-19

Early Alert Canines (EAC) improves the health, safety, and wellbeing of people with insulin dependent diabetes by partnering them with certified low-blood sugar alert Service Dogs. Dogs are well known for their highly acute sense of smell and we know that dogs can detect hypoglycemic episodes in humans. But can they detect when someone is infected with #COVID19? If so, how? In general, dogs have 300 million smell receptors, compared to 6 million in humans. The olfactory bulb is the area of the brain used to process all of the information a dog can extract from odor. One-eighth of a dog’s brain is dedicated to interpreting odor, which is 40 times larger than the same area in the human brain. Dogs are used to detect explosives for military operations, illicit drugs, and weapons for police and search and rescue missions. In the medical field, dogs are used for a variety of purposes like cancer detection, diabetes monitoring, and infectious disease screening.

In 2021, EAC successfully partnered with the CDC Foundation and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) in a pilot program to train COVID-19 Medical Detection Dogs. The goal of this program was to prove that dogs are able to identify possible COVID-19 infections with accuracy that is similar to, or better than, rapid tests. The dog is trained to detect the odor of the Volatile

Organic Compounds (VOCs) that are produced by a person infected with COVID-19. VOCs are constantly emitted by humans and the training process includes the use of clothing worn by people who tested positive for COVID-19. This program was designed to alleviate some of the stress on the testing system by replacing some rapid tests in school settings, as a tool for screening. Laboratory testing follows rapid tests to confirm testing status once a dog identifies a potential positive. Training a working dog is based upon positive reinforcement, where food and play are the rewards. Humans and dogs work together as partners, and the Handler is trained in dog communication and body language. They ensure that the dog is safe and well cared for. These highly trained dogs can screen exponentially more individuals than lab-based tests can in the same amount of time.

The project is continuing to a new phase with the goal of further exploring ways in which dogs can safely and productively help with the fight against infectious diseases and the protection of our community. EAC relies upon the generosity of people who provide a foster home for the dogs in training. If you are interested in taking a tour or learning more about how to get involved, visit www. Adopt-A-Hole Program

As a relatively new golfer, there is a lot to learn about golf. One of the things that I never considered was a golfer’s impact on course condition. After all, don’t we have greenskeepers who take care of that? Yes, we do have an amazing greens crew that keeps our course in pristine shape and attracts golfers from far and wide. But, when a golfer does damage to the course it’s important to repair it immediately (and correctly).

The Adopt-A-Hole Program was started by Lydia Shell and Steve Yount this year to bring awareness to just that. I’ve gone to two of the Adopt-A-Hole Programs so far, and I’ve learned the proper way to rake bunkers (don’t pull the sand up the sides), sand a tee box so that it doesn’t cause mounding over time, seed the fairway (most everyone knows this already) and repair ball marks on the greens like a pro.

My Adopt-A-Hole is Lakes #6 that is ALWAYS cart path only. I have found the whole thing fascinating to learn and it’s been fun and rewarding to do. It definitely makes me more aware of my impact on the course condition, no matter what hole or course I am playing. You may find out more information at the Pro Shop.

The Holidays are Upon Us

– and Padis Jewelry has Officially Arrived in Walnut Creek!

Blackhawk

residents Steve and Judy Padis are even more inspired to celebrate the 49th Anniversary of Padis Jewelry with the grand re-opening of Padis Jewelry Broadway Plaza, the first Padis Jewelry venture in their hometown.

Padis Jewelry Broadway Plaza has been recently converted from the Padis-owned Forevermark Boutique to a full Padis location showcasing natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds and fine jewelry adornment in a relaxing, non-commissioned environment. As San Francisco Bay Area’s most trusted family-owned jeweler for nearly 50 years, Padis specializes in California’s largest selection of diamonds and designers such as Tacori, Verragio, and Breitling. The Padis family offers personalized service and exceptional value and aims to exceed your expectations - each and every time you visit. You’ll never be pressured to buy or spend more than you want to. Our trusted advisors are here to help guide you to find your dream piece of jewelry.

Just in time for the holidays, here are the top three gift suggestions:

Diamond Stud Earrings

Diamond stud earrings are a wardrobe staple. Classic earrings are the ideal finisher for many seasonal outfits and that makes them a highly appreciated gift choice. They will take you from the gym to a job interview and never look out of place. We also have an extensive collection of lab grown stud earrings if you’d rather maximize the size for your buck!

The Stackable Band

Just as a fashion wardrobe of basics can change from day to day, so can your basic jewelry wardrobe thanks to the art of stacking and layering. For a master class in creating newness in a jewelry wardrobe full of classics, look no further than the stackable band. These petite-yet-impactful rings offer endless styling options for even the most fickle fashion chameleon. Begin with three complementary styles, then add one or two annually to keep the look current and allow creativity to flourish. The Padis Natural and Lab Grown Eternity Collections have tons of styles to help curate your custom stack!

The Layering Necklace

Delicate, diminutive pendants will never fade from fashion’s favor— but those in the know are putting their unique twist on the look by layering multiple styles. Stacking individual pendants offers a more laid-back approach to everyday jewelry. From custom monogram necklaces to single-stone pendants and even lariat styles, collecting pieces for a layered look can become a meaningful (and chic) way to commemorate cherished events, making these options all the more ideal for gifting.

Happy to Be Home to Serve You!

It’s the beautiful surroundings and wonderful sense of community that brought the Padis family to Danville as residents over 40 years ago. With four children who all attended St. Isidore in Danville and participated in sports and activities throughout the area, the newly re-branded store truly feels like coming home for the Padis team.

Padis Jewelry Walnut Creek is located in Broadway Plaza, right in between Brighton and Free People near the fountain. Padis brings the same exceptional selection, value, and customer service to Walnut Creek that they have offered to their jewelry clients in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Napa Valley for many years. The Padis team is thrilled to be a part of the East Bay community and looks forward to seeing you soon. From our family to yours, we wish you a very happy holiday season!
