Sometimes, when thinking about what we want to achieve in life, we get overwhelmed with the fear that we won’t or can’t do “enough.”
However, the point of setting goals isn’t to stretch yourself beyond your capabilities or comfort zone. It’s simply to lay out the things you want in life, so you consider a plan to get them.
When having these conversations with clients, we try to maintain a positive attitude while keeping our goals in reachable distance.
Some of the ways we do this are to:
Set goals that are meaningful to you.
Drop any notions of what other people want or expect of you and think only about what will make you feel happy and fulfilled. Often, spouses have separate and combined goals. That’s ok!
Imagine the end result.
Sit with the goal in mind, silently, and imagine how it will feel to accomplish your goal. Come back to this feeling from time to time, especially when facing tough decisions that will affect your progress.
Identify anything that must change in order to achieve your goals.
It is important to do this as you are initially setting your goal. We want our goals to be realistic and achievable. It’s important they bring a congruency to your life as opposed to conflict.
With this approach, we are almost building the path to goal achievement as we construct our goals.
