Feedback/Ideas/Submissions:

This September marks our 67th issue of Blackhawk Living Magazine! We have learned a lot about our community over the past 67 months and have had a blast doing it! We have many more wonderful families to feature and stories to share. On behalf of our publisher, Jo Peek, our photographer, Indigo Moments Photography, myself and all of our talented contributors, we want to thank you for letting us share the stories of our community. We want to thank all of our sponsors for making Blackhawk Living Magazine possible. Every September my neighborhood throws an annual Labor Day Block Party. This block party tradition has been going on for over 27 years on my street, and this will be the first year the neighborhood has to miss it due to COVID-19. These kinds of community bonding activities are just another reason why I cherish Blackhawk, and I look forward to being able to gather with the community again soon. This month also marks the conclusion of summer and back to a “somewhat” regular routine for many of us. As regular as we can be with virtual school and COVID-19 protocols. We wish all our Blackhawk students a great back-to-school experience and a happy Labor Day!

Meet the Gizewskis: Too Blessed to be Stressed By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010

I am a huge Seahawks fan, having grown up in Seattle. One of my ultimate sports highlights was attending the Super Bowl in 2015 where the Seahawks played the Patriots. We were given the opportunity to attend NFL China, and it was a magical weekend,” shares Tonya. Ted spent his early years in Washington and then moved to Santa Barbara in middle school. His parents still live in the same house they built when Ted was in high school, and Ted and Tonya decided to have their wedding there. “It was the most perfect day! I flew back to America early to get ready for it. It was a December wedding so we had his parents’ home completely decorated for it,” says Tonya. A graduate of UCLA and former U.S. Marine Corps Captain, Ted went on to attend law school. He received his Juris Doctor degree from UC Hastings and is currently a Deputy General Counsel at Zoom Video Communications, Inc. “Zoom is clearly in the center of all of our worlds right now, and it is a fascinating role. Needless to say, I spend all day, every day Zooming. I began my role with Zoom in May, so I have yet to meet any of my co-workers in person; only on the screen. It’s an incredible company, full of daily excitement,” shares Ted.

W

ithin 24 hours after meeting for the first time at a wine bar in Bellevue, WA, Tonya and Ted decided they were dating exclusively. Then, only six weeks later, when Ted got a job transfer to China, Tonya packed up her life and joined him for the adventure. “I remember exactly where Ted was sitting at the wine bar. He stood up across the room when I walked in the door. Such a gentleman! That was it…I was sunk (and so was he),” says Tonya. They have been inseparable ever since. Ted adds, “I knew immediately that we were meant to be together. Six weeks after we met, Microsoft told me I was being transferred to China, and I asked Tonya to join me. We met in March, moved to China that summer, and have rarely been apart since.” Even though Tonya agreed to move to China, she says she had no idea what to expect, “I had visited Shanghai and Hong Kong before but not Beijing, so I had no idea what I was agreeing to. We had not even met each other’s families yet. I flew to Santa Barbara to meet his parents, and then slipped into the conversation that we were moving to China. Everyone thought we were crazy, but we had the most amazing time! We loved it. We deliberately lived in the heart of the city. I learned the language well enough to be able to navigate just about any situation, and we did everything we could to learn Chinese history and culture. It was amazing.” Self described, “culture vultures,” Ted and Tonya love to learn about other places through travel. “While in China, we both filled up nearly an entire passport traveling around Asia. 8

Tonya grew up in Washington and comes from a large family. She attended Washington State University and says she found her way into her dream career in real estate, “ I was recruited to join a mortgage company in 2001 and eventually became a co-owner and helped grow it into a national mortgage bank. While in China, Ted and I purchased investment properties, which I managed and I also earned my California real estate license. I started in Danville with Coldwell Banker and was Rookie of the Year, as well as achieving Diamond and International Presidents Clubs in my first three years. I am also one of the top 1% of Zillow agents in the country. I was recruited to join Compass in December and am now a proud member of the Khrista Jarvis Team there. I love real estate, and there couldn’t be a better place to work in this field than where we live!” SEPTEMBER 2020

Gemma, their nine-9 year-old daughter, completes the family. Her parents say they are proud of all she has accomplished, “She did remarkably well in school during the shutdown this spring. She made the honor roll in her first year of getting letter grades. Gemma is athletic and loves playing basketball, volleyball and swimming. She also loves dancing and has even put on a dance show for the neighbors with one of her friends.” And not-to-be left out is Calvin, a two-year-old rescue puppy. “He is a terrier mix, and is the sweetest dog out there. He is definitely the center of our family, and he loves his walks and seeing all his friends during those walk and on trips to the dog park,” adds Tonya. When Ted and Tonya returned to the US from Beijing they originally went back to Seattle, but Ted was hired by Workday, which is what brought the family to Blackhawk, where Tonya says they couldn’t be happier. “We live on Fox Creek Drive, the best street in Blackhawk, and we absolutely love living here! The Fox Creek area has the best neighbors! Everyone is friendly and would do anything to help each other. It is the kind of neighborhood where everyone stops to talk to each other, knows about each other and their families. It’s the best group of neighbors Ted and I

have ever had!” Tonya says she is proud to have been a part of the team to bring a new dog park to Blackhawk. “I was very involved with helping to secure the site for the new Blackhawk dog park. It is so wonderful to see all of our fellow Blackhawk residents enjoying it every time we go there, and knowing how hard we all worked to help get it established. Thank you for being the best neighbors there are! We are so grateful to live here with you!”

Danville Concours d’Elegance Message from founders regarding 2020 Danville d’Elegance Events and COVID-19: As we all continue to receive information regarding the evolving and dynamic nature of COVID-19, the Danville d’Elegance Foundation has changed our series of fundraising events for 2020 out of respect for our amazing donors, guests, sponsors, volunteers, and the Town of Danville. Sadly, our Concours and Gala Dinner will be cancelled this year. This was such a difficult decision as we really enjoy bringing all of our car enthusiasts together down the streets of Danville and come together as a group to fight Parkinson’s disease. The Tour is currently scheduled to go on as planned. We will continue to monitor the situation over time; however, we are hopeful this fund-raiser will remain on the calendar. The $7,000,000 Danville d’Elegance has raised to Stop Parkinson’s in its Tracks over the past fifteen years is because of our participants and sponsors uniting and supporting our fund-raising efforts. The Danville d’Elegance team, along with our Presenting Sponsor, Cole European Jaguar Land Rover, thanks you for your continued support and hopes you and your loved ones are staying healthy and safe. www.danville-delegance.org

Life through a Lens

The perfect day at Point Reyes... By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015

O

ne of these past weekends, I along with my family hit the road again to explore the unknown (to us!) - Point Reyes National Seashore located on California’s stunning coastal Highway 1. Point Reyes has more than 70,000 acres of preserved land and seashore with amazing hiking trails and breathtaking landscapes. We drove up to Point Reyes Station, a small charming town with artisan galleries and local boutiques and the best oysters on the West Coast. We ate at Station House Cafe with beautiful garden patio dining perfect for a COVID safe setting. After a yummy meal, we were ready to hike the 5-mile Laguna trail and Coast trail, located close by. The Laguna trail was narrow with worn paths at different levels but surrounded by plenty of amazing flora and fauna. There was light traffic with no contact, and sharing the trail with horses was the only challenge. Soon we headed downhill and after 45 min or so, we finally ended up at this secret remote hidden Sculptured beach with dramatic steep bluffs, colorful sea stacks and gorgeous coastal scenery. The few lucky ones here can spot hermit crabs, sea anemones, starfish, and elephant seals. We ran into a huge flock of crows and seagulls cawing and croaking. For our way back, we looped on to the Coast trail which was wide, flat and an easy 45 min hike, for which my feet were very thankful. Back in the car, we happened to be routed to the Drakes Beach (named after the famed explorer Saint Francis Drake) because the road to the Lighthouse was closed. It is another quiet beach backed by dramatic white sandstone cliffs and beautiful coastline. We were lucky to spot a herd of Elks on the way here. Wow! After chasing the seagulls and getting wet in the waves, it was time to go back home-to our very own oasis in Blackhawk. We cannot fly to fancy destinations right now, but if you are itching to hit the road, go out and explore. Never take things in your backyard for granted! Do your part and stay safe. Soaking in the waves at Drakes beach

Loud noisy crows at the Sculptured beach.

Sonia Lamba As an aspiring photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity! Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses

Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe: World Class Waterfront Resort By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990

R

ecently, we had the pleasure of staying at the world class Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Hotel.

From our home in Danville, it is an easy 3.5-hour drive. To break up the drive, we also stopped in Truckee for breakfast and enjoyed ‘world class‘ people watching in this charming town. There are many breakfast choices. We enjoyed a hearty meal at ‘Coffee and Coffee’. The Hyatt Regency resort features ‘something for everyone’ including restaurants, spa, pool, beaches, casino, tennis and golf at nearby Incline Village. round and great tuna sandwiches and drinks during your round. The restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner. It is a ‘must play’ golf course in Lake Tahoe.

After checking in, we walked to the nearby beach and enjoyed a great afternoon of warm mountain sunshine and watching people enjoy themselves boating, swimming and lounging on comfortable umbrella covered chairs on the beach of beautiful Lake Tahoe. Due to Covid-19, the only restaurant open was the Lone Eagle Inn. It opens at 7 and closes at 10 serving a variety of delicious items. Reservations are highly recommended as the hotel has been full since reopening in June. We enjoyed a great dinner on the patio of this massive restaurant just a few yards from the soothing sounds of waves rolling to the beach. We met Chef Justin and especially enjoyed his barbecued rolled salmon with crab meat on top. Linda said it was the best she has ever eaten, and she is a ‘salmon specialist’. The Baked Tahoe dessert in the shape of a pine cone with lightly browned marshmallows and filled with chocolate and toffee ice cream was also awesome. The next day we played the Championship Course at Incline Village. The course has friendly tees for golfers of all skill levels. The Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed course is in magnificent condition and meanders majestically through the thousands of large pine trees exhaling fresh, pure mountain air. The snack shack offers great breakfast sandwiches before your

After golf, we returned to the hotel and rested before enjoying a fun and unique dinner at nearby La Fondue. Owner Jesus Hernandez has been serving loyal Incline residents and tourists for 6 years. A variety of Fondues are offered to satisfy any ‘foodie’ palate. We enjoyed the combination special, which is a great way to sample all of the choices. Cheese, beef, chicken, shrimp, lamb, meat balls and vegetables are included with a choice of soup or salad. There is also an extensive wine and beer list and a $20 corking fee if you bring your own wine. For dessert, we would recommend sharing the vanilla ice cream elegantly presented with a variety of sauces. It is a great way to complete your La Fondue experience. In conclusion, Lake Tahoe is a ‘slice of heaven!’ and fun place to enjoy an escape from the stress and rigors of daily life. A 5-Part series on Selecting the Best Shutter (Part 3) By Shem Isaac, Home Living Windows Pros and cons of the various methods of joinery. There are two types of forces that impact a shutter’s integrity. These are called racking forces and shear forces. Simply put, racking forces are caused by gravity pulling the panel down while the hinges are holding it up. Shear forces are caused when a panel is opened and closed during normal use and exacerbated when a panel is slammed shut or yanked open. This is all expected use, and a quality shutter will hold up to these conditions where a poor quality shutter will fail. Let’s look at five commonly used methods of joining shutter stiles and rails. Biscuits are commonly used for small panels like kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors. They don’t provide much strength but are used to help align the stile and rail for a clean corner while the glue sets. Biscuits are never used in fine shutter joinery as they lack the strength to support large panels. Thankfully, most shutter companies have moved away from biscuits for shutters. Bridle joints are good for withstanding sheer forces, so they do have a place in the production of fine furniture. But shutter panels have to be able to withstand racking forces too, and the bridle joint is not suitable for this purpose. Some well-known manufacturers use a bridle joint, but they call it an “open mortise and tenon.” There is no such thing outside the imagination of a marketing agent. Dovetail joints are good at withstanding push and pull forces, but like the bridle joint they are inferior when subjected to racking forces. Unlike the bridle joint they perform poorly when subjected to shear forces. While a great joint for drawers, the dovetail is a gimmick when used for shutters. Beware of shutters built to the standards of the marketing department rather than the engineering department. Dowels are the best joint so far on this list, and are used by many top manufacturers. Many of the nicest and most costly shutters on the market use large dowels to secure their rails to stiles. The limitation is the adhesive surface area is equal to or less than the surface area of the dowel. Fluted or spiral dowels are superior to smooth dowels as the flute allows for more adhesive to be used. Dowels are fine for withstanding racking forces, but have a tendency to fail when exposed to shear forces. Thankfully this is a repairable issue and a total replacement can be avoided. Mortise and Tenon is the best joint for a shutter panel, bar none. The tenon is formed from the same piece of wood as the rail, and a deep mortise in the stile allows for maximum contact area for the wood adhesive. Panels built with mortise and tenon are sturdier and longer lasting than those built with any other form of joinery. I’m not sure we’ve ever gotten a call that a mortise and tenon were failing, but if they did, it would be an easy repair.

The Perfect Nose (Rhinoplasty) By Stephen J Ronan, MD, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery, Resident Since 2007

Y

our nose is the most prominent feature on your face, and its shape affects your overall appearance. Unlike other features on the body that elicit either positive or negative responses when visualized, most noses are only noticed for negative reasons… like too wide, too long, or pronounced hump or bump. Noses are meant to disappear into the face. That’s why when I perform nose surgery (rhinoplasty), I try to create a nose that conforms to the balance and proportions of the face so nothing stands out. Our brains unconsciously understand aesthetic proportions and whether something is pleasing and conforming, or is bothersome and stands out. This means that a nose that is fantastic on one face can be a disaster on another. One nose doesn’t fit all -- we must build noses that are designed specifically for an individual’s

proportions and facial structure. While most nose patients have aesthetic concerns, some also have functional concerns. This typically involves crookedness, weakness or poor shape of some structures that cause obstruction or restriction of air movement. These problems are addressed at the same time during the procedure. We can both make the function and aesthetics better simultaneously.

Noses are considered difficult cases and many plastic surgeons will not do them. I am often referred and perform revisional rhinoplasty. Almost always, a revisional surgery is done because at least one of the three crucial steps was off target.

Successful rhinoplasty surgery results from three important steps: 1. The surgeon must first evaluate exactly what the problem is, and which structural aspects of the nose need to be addressed; 2. Next the surgeon must be able to visualize the right nose for a particular patient’s face and conceive the most appropriate surgical plan; 3. Lastly, the surgeon must be able to execute that plan both technically and artistically.

So what’s the perfect nose? There isn’t a single one. There are many...one for each person and face! The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for nose surgery is to schedule an in-person or virtual consultation where the procedure is explained, and all of your questions answered. If you are interested in learning more about rhinoplasty or other cosmetic procedures, please contact my office at 925.736.5757.

Book Corner

September Book Review: Broken Glass By Iman Simab, Resident Since 2003

B

roken Glass by V.C. Andrews is the next book in The Mirror Sisters trilogy. While the first book ends in a cliffhanger, the next book continues to tell the readers what happens afterwards. After Kaylee is abducted, Haylee has no choice but to break the news to her mother and father. While her parents are frantically starting a search party for Kaylee, Haylee hopes to finally be free from Kaylee’s shadow and can start forging her own identity. She also believes, with Kaylee out of the way, her parents will now give her their complete attention. Unlike the first book, which is told completely from Kaylee’s point of view, the second book switches between Haylee’s point of view and Kaylee’s point of view. Being able to read from Haylee’s point of view is interesting, because it shows that Haylee is a more complicated person than we initially thought. For example, there were moments in the book where I wondered if she actually felt guilty and remorseful for what she

did to her sister. Then there were also moments where I felt Haylee was just trying to use Kaylee’s abduction to direct attention and sympathy to herself. It made me think of Munchausen syndrome by proxy and how caretakers with this mental health problem try to get attention or sympathy through having a sick person under their care. For example, Haylee is constantly reminding other people that she is also a victim of Kaylee’s abduction because she claims losing Kaylee was like losing a part of herself. While The Mirror Sisters discusses the taboo of sex and drugs, Broken Glass adds in the taboo of mental illness. For example, Kaylee’s abduction causes their mother to lose her mind, which we see when she once mistakes Haylee for Kaylee. Their mother’s breakdown gets so bad that she has to start seeing a therapist and get put on medication. The therapist even advises Haylee and her father to not bring up Kaylee’s disappearance to her mother, because it might cause another breakdown and slow down her progress. Kaylee’s character also goes through a major change. At first, Kaylee refuses to believe that Haylee could have set her up. She believes it was an honest mistake and is certain that Haylee will come to her rescue. As the days go by, however, she soon realizes the truth and how her rescue seems impossible. The moment where Kaylee becomes aware of Haylee’s betrayal is heartbreaking as you can feel all of her hurt and anger. While Kaylee is angry at Haylee and can never trust her again, it is amazing how she still looks to Haylee as a guide (she often thinks what Haylee would do in her situation and uses that as endurance). Reading through Kaylee’s chapters kept me hooked and holding my breath until the end, because I just had to know how Kaylee was going to escape from her kidnapper. I was also wondering if Haylee would ever get caught, because nobody seems to suspect her of being involved in Kaylee’s abduction.

Message from Principal Carol Bender, St. Isidore School By Principal Carol Bender

W

ith great excitement, I write this letter of introduction to you as the new principal of St. Isidore School! For over 25 years, it has been my ministry to serve in the Catholic school community as an educator and administrator. I place tremendous emphasis on instilling the mission of our faith and providing a program of academic excellence. It is an incredible honor and privilege to lead St. Isidore School. My introduction to serving in Catholic education began on the peninsula, under the Archdiocese of San Francisco. After ten years of teaching in Belmont and San Bruno, I embraced the leadership role of vice-principal. Two years later, I became principal at Our Lady of Angels School (Burlingame). It was then while serving on a WCEA Accreditation Team that I became acquainted with St. Isidore School. I was immediately impressed by the school’s strong sense of community and dedication to students, academically, and spiritually. I reconnected with St. Isidore School when I moved to Danville in 2005 and was hired as a fourth-grade long-term substitute teacher. Since then, I have served in several positions at St. Isidore School to include Jr. High teacher, vice-principal, academic support, and parishioner.

2020–2021 School Year Serving as a principal during a pandemic is a monumental task! The feeling of uncertainty that surrounds each day and a longing for a sense of normalcy is constant. Along with my leadership team, I spent this summer connecting with teachers, parents, and diocesan leadership to navigate this uncertainty while analyzing what other academic institutions across the nation had outlined for the upcoming year. The county’s recent mandate has confirmed that we will start the school year in a long-distance format. Faculty and staff have been busy expanding technology platforms and implementing engaging lessons and activities. We have prepared a rigorous academic and faith-filled online program for our students. Our ultimate goal is to bring our students back to campus safely, and we are busy preparing for that time. I pray you remain in good health, stay safe, and have an excellent start to the school year! Many Blessings, Carol Bender, Principal St. Isidore School

Stop Spending

Based On Other People’s Wealth By Joe Morgan, CFP®, CFA, Principal: Best Financial Life, Resident since 2004

I

t is ridiculous that we sometimes base our spending decisions on stories we tell ourselves instead of our actual situation. One day, a neighbor comes home with a fancy new car and the stories start pouring into our head. That car costs $100,000! The insurance must cost a fortune! Where did she get the money for that? They must be more successful than me! And, after a time, these stories lead us to spend a lot of money we wouldn’t otherwise – perhaps on a car or perhaps on something else.

It sounds crazy when you think about it this way, but it’s actually behavior that is academically proven – and if we are honest with ourselves, it is a very recognizable pattern. Instead of basing our behavior on how we think our income compares to our neighbors, what if we could base our behavior on our actual situation? Wouldn’t that be more likely to lead to our long term success? For more details, check out a deeper analysis at www.BestFinLife.com/blog, but in this space I want to simply make the point that this can be very important.

It's Kitten Season By Janine Collins, Blackhawk resident since 1999

e all know the phrase, “It’s raining cats and dogs.” We’ll, it’s raining kittens at Tri-Valley Animal Rescue. We are in the middle of kitten season. Before I joined TVAR I didn’t know there was a kitten season. The season runs between March and December. It started off a little slow this year with the quarantine, but now we have dozens and dozens of kittens in foster homes all around the Tri-Valley area. TVAR fosters more than 300 kittens each year. Many come in sick and we work hard to save them. We also work hard to socialize and find them all loving homes. Being a foster family takes a lot of dedication, but seeing these kittens thrive after being nursed back to health is all the thanks our dedicated volunteers need. We also have amazing “Bottle Baby” fosters who sign up for 24-hour care of the tiniest of newborns. This requires having to feed them every 2 hours throughout the day and night until they’re old enough to transition to kitten food. All of our kitten fosters care for these deserving kittens until they are spayed/neutered and go to their forever homes. Being a foster also often requires medications and other veterinary visits to make sure TVAR delivers a healthy, socialized, happy kitten to an adopting family. In addition to our foster dog and kitten programs, we also have an exceptional cadre of TVAR Shelter volunteers who work hard to help the animals at the Dublin East County Animal Shelter while they await adoption, walking and socializing them every day.

Red Sky Ranch in the Rockies – Norman Course By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012

estled near the infamous Vail and Beaver Creek Resort regions in the Rocky Mountains, Red Sky Ranch offers two scenic mountain courses, Norman and Fazio, ranked #1 and #3 in Impressive Practice Range Colorado by Golf Magazine. As an upscale semi-private club, they limit access to members and guests of thirty-five Vail and Beaver Creek properties. Course, range and clubhouse access alternates between public guests and members each day.

Mountain Views Large Rustic Clubhouse

frames the left side of the seventeenth fairway. He makes it tough to run the ball on the green with bunkering that narrows access or ends fairways with barrancas other obstacles. False green fronts (and backs) are common. It’s an approach shot course.

First-class service and conditioning are a hallmark of Red Sky Ranch. They treat visitors like members. The exquisite playing conditions impressed me while the mountain scenery marveled me.

Conditioning is perfect. Greens are generous and receptive to good shots. They are true, very fast, with breaks difficult to see. They have wide fringes, so balls don’t run into deep rough giving ample opportunities for recovery shots.

Norman course opened in 2003. It longer and more challenging than its older sibling, the Fazio course. I liked the 7-10% distance boost I got by playing above 7000 feet altitude.

The Norman Course at Red Sky Ranch is tough and scenic. Play the Fazio course for fun and the Norman course for the challenge.

From the public clubhouse it’s a long ride to the first tee at the Norman course. As you hustle up the ridge, it’s worth a stop to admire the panoramic views. The Fazio course laid out below with the snow-capped mountains in the distance. They design most holes in the flat sites at the base of the valley. The Norman course routes through scenic hillsides and gorgeous Aspen trees with impressive scenery. Given the higher elevations with the ridge, the views are even more spectacular than the Fazio course. It’s also more compacted than Fazio with fewer homes. Elevation change from 14th tee at the top of the ridge to the 3rd green is four hundred feet. Norman’s designed required major earth-moving and reconstruction of the landscape. They preserved much of the local existing vegetation by removing it and replanting it after the hole layouts. Multiple rock outcroppings add to the beauty and challenge. As is classic Norman style, you’ll find large fairways, large par 3 greens but postage stamp par 5 greens. The frequent forced carries are easy. But large fairways don’t always translate to easy landing areas as they are often sloping. Putting yourself in the right spot is important for the approach. What looks like a good tee shot can be in a bad location or penalized. Norman created gigantic bunkering. his month I thought I would present you with ideas for little ones, teens and adults. Ideas for Little Ones Pom pom’s are super easy and a craft that kids love to make. Kids can throw them like a ball, place them on their backpack, or put them on a keychain. Go to YouTube and watch the video “How to make the perfect (Rainbow) pom pom” by WhatsUpMoms. It has directions and many inspirational uses for pom poms.

For a larger assortment to choose from, go to Etsy.com and search for “Paint by Number kits”. I also saw a couple of Paint the Town by Numbers kits at Barnes and Nobles this week. There are a couple of custom paint by number sellers out there too. You can submit a photo of your pet and they’ll turn it into a paint by number kit for you! Ideas for Teenagers and Adults For those teenagers and adults who like to sew and express their artistic side, I would highly recommend learning how to quilt. You can start out small by making a pillow or a wall hanging. Here is a quilt I’m in the process of completing. This is a pattern by Lori Holt:

Ideas for Teenagers For those who remember Paint by Numbers canvases - they are really popular right now. I think teens will enjoy these. The website https://www. paintthetownbynumbers.com/paint-thetown-by-numbers-kits- has many great ideas including this one:

This one is much easier to make as you use fusible interfacing to attach the flowers and butterflies. Both of these patterns can be used for a pillow or wall hanging rather than making the whole quilt. If you find you like the process, you can make a whole quilt! You can find so many different types inspiration by searching Instagram for the crafters mentioned in this article: Instagram accounts: whatsupmoms Camilla Spadafino: paintthetownbynumbers Lori Holt: beelori1 Laura Heine: fiberworksquiltshoplauraheine Happy Crafting!

I spent many nights chasing sunsets with my friends and we even got a chance to see comet NEOWISE! This kept me busy and kept me connected with my neighbors as they walked by everyday. My family and I also spent a week in Oregon exploring its natural beauty. We saw Crater Lake National Park, John Day Fossil Hills National Monument and many waterfalls. Oregon is truly a breathtaking place, and it was a much needed break from being quarantined for a couple months. In the midst of a global pandemic, I’d say I had a pretty good summer, and I look forward to a great school year as well.

ach of us has been impacted in different ways by the COVID-19 pandemic. Old, young and in-between, we’ve all experienced big changes in our work home and social lives. Some changes, like losing a job, are difficult. Others – like spending more time with loved ones or doing more to help those in need – are joyful and inspiring. The California State Library is working with local libraries to collect COVID-19 stories from across the state. We invite you to share your experience – in an essay, poem, letter, photograph, artwork or video – so that we can preserve these memories for future Californians. Visit ccclib.org/blogs/post/covid-diaries/ to contribute your story.

Padis Jewelry – Your Forevermark Experts in the San Francisco Bay Area! By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry and The Broadway Plaza Forevermark Boutique

O

n the hunt for the perfect piece of diamond jewelry? Look no further than Padis Jewelry. With three of the top six Forevermark Diamond experts in the country, there is no more knowledgeable team! Vic, Valerie and Laurel, managers and long time members of the Padis Jewelry family, have all achieved Carat Club status with Forevermark in 2020, which highlights their expertise while assisting clients with selecting responsibly-sourced diamonds that provide the best quality, beauty and value. As part of the prestigious Carat Club, Padis team members were able to visit the country of Botswana to enhance their understanding of the journey of a diamond from mine to finger. As a part of the trip, they met with the First Lady of Botswana, Neo Jane Masisif, and they also got to experience and appreciate the socio-economic impact of each diamond mined in improving the livelihoods of communities in producer countries. Forevermark demonstrates values that transcend the finished product and its mining, making lasting contributions to mining communities through educational, medical and social initiatives and through actions taken to redress the environmental impact of mining. There are also dedicated programs for career development for women and education of children. With the these experts and their firsthand experience in Botswana, the largest selection of Forevermark in the San Francisco Bay Area and a new Forevermark location in the Bay Area East Bay – an area most of the Padis team calls home – clients can experience the exceptional collection of loose diamonds, engagement rings and fine jewelry all under one roof. Forevermark’s passion for diamonds is matched by their deep sense of connection to the natural world, which they are dedicated to protecting for future generations. Forevermark is committed to the preservation and protection of habitats, their species, and the wider natural world. In short, a Forevermark by Padis diamond is a diamond you can wear proudly. Padis Jewelry has an extensive selection of Forevermark fine jewelry for you to experience and
