This month also marks the conclusion of summer and back to a regular routine for many of us. Wishing all our Blackhawk students a great back to school experience and a happy Labor Day! We are devoted to sharing stories, events and news among our neighbors in this wonderful community. If you have a story, event or news to share, please email me at mscott@bestversionmedia.com

Dear

This September marks our 91st issue of Blackhawk Living Magazine! We have learned a lot about our community over the past 91 months and have had a blast doing it! We have many more wonderful families to feature and stories to share. On behalf of our publisher, Jo Peek, our photographer, Ashley Shoemaker, myself and all of our talented contributors, we want to thank you for letting us share the stories of our community. We want to thank all of our sponsors for making Blackhawk Living Magazine possible. Every September, my neighborhood throws an annual Block Party. It’s where we get to know any new neighbors and catch up with everyone else. This block party tradition has been going on for over 30 years on my street. These kinds of community bonding activities are just another reason I cherish Blackhawk.

Ellie Glenn fell in love with sailing while growing up in Blackhawk and participating in a Junior Sailing program. She found the love and passion for the sport at a young age and carried that into her racing career. Now, she has embarked on a quest to the 2024 Olympic Games being held in Paris, France. She is partnering with Kelly Cole, from Oklahoma City, OK. “Having been involved in sailing my entire life, competing nationally and internationally, I know that Kelly and I have what it takes to go for Olympic success. Our years of sailing have taught us that if you give one hundred and ten percent of yourself to something, even if it hurts, only good results will come. We have the grit, the passion, and the determination to continue our love for the sport at the highest level and represent the United States of America as a part of the US Sailing Team,” says Ellie. Team Kelly Ellie sails the 49er FX, a female class, in high performance sailing. The boat has been in the Olympics since 2016. It is composed of three sails, weighing in at 200 pounds and 16 ft. long. “The boat literally flies across the water,” adds Ellie. She started sailing a double-handed boat, called the C420. Through her years as a youth sailor, she gained experience in a team dynamic, skills of boat tuning and trapping, and physical strength. “Sailing is an extremely unique sport.

This allows us to give back to the community that we are in and always make time for youth.”

By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010 Meet Ellie Glenn:

The athletes competing in Olympic Classes are not just some of the fittest, but also some of the most intelligent. Decisions and execution are required at high speed on the water. There isn’t a straight line to success, and the quickest route isn’t always the most obvious. Sailing forces you to take the routes you would consider the hardest, simply on face value. This directly helps you in a life of business by familiarizing you with the notion that the easy way out isn’t the best way, and grinding out the hard yards is oftentimes more satisfying and rewarding,” shares Ellie.

When she is not training around the world, you can find Ellie working as a Junior Sailing Program Director at Encinal Yacht Club, located in Alameda. She says it gives her a chance to pass on her passion, “We are constantly moving locations, to different yacht clubs, and always provide our time to coaching youth sailors.

“I served for 6 years in the Army, so I can’t say I’m a financial advisor, but if you are looking for a return on your investment, you need to look no further than myself”

PGA Hope

When I enlisted in 2005, I brought my golf clubs to my first duty station. While we were deployed to Iraq, the following summer, I found a pitching wedge and range balls on base and practiced between missions. I was wounded in combat, twice, and received the Purple Heart Award, twice. During my rehabilitation, while stationed in Alaska, I played golf under the midnight sun and recovered. After deciding to reenlist in 2008, I was reassigned to Ft. Gordon in Augusta, Georgia, of all places. My overseas service continued as duty called again. In 2010, I was deployed to Afghanistan. I didn’t have golf clubs, but I watched the tour from down range, and dreamed of playing back home. The commanding officer asked what my plans were after being honorably discharged in 2010, and I told him I was heading to San Diego to pursue golf.

14 SEPTEMBER 2022 Charity Spotlight

The transition to civilian life was good, but I allowed unhealthy choices and obstacles to hinder my goal. Having experienced such significant loss in battle, I believed everything to be impermanent, lost focus and drive. I idled away until the fateful day. During the 2020 PGA Championship, San Francisco Police Officer Kennedy called me, (as Colin Morikawa was taming Harding Park) saying he saw a PGA HOPE commercial and recommended that I sign up for the classes. I paid heed to the sound advice of a childhood school friend and looked into the PGA HOPE program. From the moment of that auspicious phone call my life returned to me. Being a good paratrooper, I took the opportunity as a leap of faith, and haven’t looked back. In 2020, I invested my time in the classes, and became a PGA HOPE Graduate. I invested myself in the play days, and in 2021, I became a captain. I invested in being a captain and was invited to the PGA HOPE Secretary’s Cup. I invested in relationships and acquired a position at a PGA HOPE golf course, and now work at Metropolitan Golf Links. The golf event was a huge success, thanks to the helpful contributions from donors. Now, as an Instructor, I invest adaptive golf training to nearly three different PGA HOPE classes,

Bald Eagle Fledgling Rescue at Del Valle Ends Successfully

By Jen Vanya, Public Information Specialist, East Bay Regional Park District

While the fledge was convalescing, the ranch managers reported seeing its sibling in flight and calling to its parents, who were responding and feeding it.

On the morning of June 30, Riensche and Del Valle Supervising Naturalist Ashley Grenier, on-hand to photograph the release, met on-site with the ranch managers to discuss the release plan. A good eagle release site was located close to the original nest location, which was high enough to avoid potential ground-based threats and provided excellent up drafts to help the eaglet practice flapping its wings, build muscle tone, and hopefully get airborne. The team was unable to take it out of the crate and carry it to the release location, as the “eaglet with attitude” was known to be a fighter and difficult to handle. Riensche lugged the crated fledgling back up the steep slope and placed the kennel on a large log, allowing it some time to recognize the familiar surroundings. A short time later, the fledgling walked out of the kennel and slowly made his way upward (above, right).

Community Content

By June 29, the pin was removed from the wing, and the following day Dr. Loo and Veterinary Technician Peter Flowers performed an “eaglet exit exam,” which included feeding it and checking its wings, injury location, and talons/grip to be sure it was ready for release. With a clean bill of health and proper federal and state approvals in-hand, the team began coordinating the newly-healed fledge’s return to the wild.

T

The near-tragic event occurred at the site of a large stick nest, considered a “nest at risk” for the past three-to-four years due to a previous nest falling from the same pine tree. On the evening of June 11, the trunk supporting the nest snapped during a heavy windstorm, and the entire nest was blown down out of the tree.

16 SEPTEMBER 2022

Park District Wildlife Biologist David “Doc Quack” Riensche was notified early the following morning by neighboring ranchers, who first noticed the adult bald eagles standing guard near the fallen nest site, and soon after spotted the 10.5-week-old male eaglet atop the pile of debris with his wing folded back. As a fledgling, the injured young bird was particularly vulnerable. A fledgling’s feathers and wing muscles may be sufficiently developed for flying but they may not yet be capable of flight, and they are still dependent upon parental care and feeding.

The ranch managers had not seen his female sibling, but they would continue to watch for her. Later that morning, Del Valle Naturalist Alex Collins, who was leading a regular bald eagle program, noticed the nest was gone and sent photos to Riensche, who was already preparing to attempt a rescue.

“We were relieved to know that the sibling had survived the tree collapse and its ‘forced fledging’, as it were,” said Riensche. “This gave us confidence that if the eaglet at Lindsay Wildlife Hospital recovered quickly, we could reunite it with its family.”

Doug Bell and David Riensche with rescued eaglet.

he dramatic rescue of an injured bald eagle fledgling from the debris of a fallen nest on ranch land adjacent to Del Valle Regional Park in Livermore had those involved in the effort all aflutter for the last half of summer. Thanks to a collaboration between nearby ranch managers, who spotted the nest debris and helped locate the fallen fledge, Park District biologists and naturalists, who headed up the rescue and release efforts, and the Lindsey Wildlife Hospital, whose wildlife medical team was able to nurse the eaglet back to health, the story ended well for the young eagle.

With approval from federal and state wildlife agencies to proceed, Riensche and Wildlife Program Manager Doug Bell met on-site with the ranch managers and climbed up the steep slope to remove the eaglet from the nest debris (above, left). The eaglet was transported to Lindsay Wildlife Hospital in Walnut Creek, where x-rays showed that it had a fractured right radius (wing bone). Wildlife veterinarian Dr. Krystal Loo pinned the wing bone so that it would mend properly.

“At this point, the released eaglet calling was a good sign, and we hoped the adults would respond by feeding it soon,” explained Doug Bell. “We were thinking it might stay grounded for a couple of days, or just take short hopping flights until it built up muscle tone,” he added.

By mid-afternoon, the eaglet was heard calling to its parents, who were feeding his sibling in a nearby pine. To be sure it would be hungry enough to call to its parents, the fledgling had only received enough food to get it through the day and be well-hydrated. However, with no visual sign of the released eaglet by sundown, the team was very anxious about its fate.

Around noon the next day, the ranch managers reported seeing both eaglets in the same tree, while the attending adult fed one of the fledglings as the other one vocalized. The sighting meant that the recovered eaglet was able to take flight and reunite with its family, a happy ending to a bald eagle adventure - just in time for the Fourth of ForJuly!more

I remember making a piñata out of paper mache using a balloon when I was a kid. I haven’t touched paper mache since, until now. It definitely brought back memories. This project was super easy and the result is whimsical and adorable.

Mike Grgich: Hall Of Fame Winemaker

By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990

Recently, we attended the Grgich Hills Annual Release party. Hall Of Fame winemaker Mike Grgich made wine history in 1976 when the Chardonnay he crafted won the Judgement of Paris tasting. Now 99 years young, he continues to make world class wine. His daughter Violet now runs the winery. We have been attending this release party for 30 years. On a sun-drenched afternoon, we enjoyed music, dancing, photo booths, bocce, great wines, and a variety of sensational Croatian food appetizers. Mike is originally from Croatia and also has a winery Attendingthere.this party is like being at a live movie. The backdrop of the vineyards and heavenly smell of barbecued Lamb and Fried chicken was a sensational combination that became a heavenly experience when paired with the ‘great ’Grgich wines. Today there were many tasting stations and each table had bottles of 2019 Essence, 2019 Chardonnay, 2017 Zinfandel and 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Danville’s Community Pianos Return to Downtown. Residents invited to share their musical talents. The Town of Danville is thrilled to announce the return of the community pianos. Pianos are available outside of the Danville Senior Center, Danville Community Center, and the Village Theatre & Art Gallery for all ages to share their musical talents with residents and visitors alike. In May, the Town put a call out to local high school and middle school students to create new designs for the pianos. Several local young artists submitted colored sketches of their original designs and three were chosen. The cow print piano at the Danville Community Center was painted by Lucine B. The piano in front of the Village Theatre & Art Gallery was designed by Elizabeth M. The “Summer of Love” piano in front of the Danville Senior Center was created by Ashley G. To read more about the artists’ inspiration for these artworks, follow the Recreation, Arts & Community Services Department on Instagram @danvilleparksca. The pianos will be available through September.

Find ShareAND Danville 13-year-olds win World Series

“It was a great experience and one that I won’t forget,” echoed Preston Pera.

Danville Little League World Series Champions includes players: Andrew Chang, Anthony DeVito, Brent Del Barrio, Brett Sadur, Caden Boscia, Carter Tong, Dario Boban, Davis Lynch, Gavin McMillan, Jack Hill, Jacob Quinto, J.T. Roberts, Mathew Sardelich, and Preston Pera, and coaches Matt Hill, Brian Sardelich, and Dan Lynch.

In a true show of sportsmanship, the boys celebrated their win with the kids from the other teams. Davis Lynch said, “a highlight was dancing with the South Korea team in the hotel courtyard after the game.” Gavin McMillan added, “It was really fun making new friends with people from international places like South Korea, Australia, Netherlands and even Curaçao. We’ve found ways to keep in touch since meeting even though we don’t speak the same language.”

The Intermediate 50/70 World Series, which has been in existence since 2013, takes place in Livermore, CA and consists of six U.S. teams and six international teams. After a week of games that began on July 31, the Danville team made it to the top of the U.S. division by beating Hawaii 5-0. South Korea beat Puerto Rico in the International Division final game, setting the stage for Danville and South Korea to play for the title.

On August 7 a team of 14 boys from Danville and Alamo became the World Champions at the Little League Intermediate World Series.

Congratulations to our World Champion Danville Intermediate Little League players and coaches!

Danville scored one run in each of the first four innings against a really tough South Korea pitcher. Then in the 6th inning South Korea had a 2-run home run. At that point in the tournament, Danville had only given up two runs all week. But in the end, Danville won the game 5-2. “We scored runs in lots of creative ways; we pitched well and played amazing defense,” said Lynch. Matt Hill, Head Coach added, “We set out to shock the world, and that’s exactly what these young men did. They seized their moment in the spotlight. Every big moment they were ready and never wilted under the lights. I think that reflects the personality and heart of this town, and I couldn’t be more proud.”

“Our pitcher Jacob Quinto was very calm and poised,” said Assistant Coach Dan Lynch. “That inspired everyone to play well.”

The journey began in February as the Diablo Kings Little League team played their regular season, led by Head Coach Matt Hill. In the regular season they lost their first game. The players, most of who play on travel ball teams during the off-season, were not used to the Intermediate sized field used for their age level, which is between a Little League sized field and a regular sized field. The team had some work to do, and they worked hard. They finished the regular season 10-2, averaging about 14 runs each game. Then in June the post season began, and the team, which had been made up of 12 Danville 13-yearolds from all over Danville, was able to add 2 more players who both came from Alamo. They became the District 57 champions, after playing a double-elimination style tournament against other Bay Area All-star teams.

Last year was yet another banner year for the program. Teaching the game the right way pays dividends over the course of a couple of years. This was evident by the success of all of our teams. We traveled to Arizona during Spring training and our 12U, 13U, and 14U teams all won the Triple Crown Spring Nationals. Each team, from the 9U-18U, had sustained success throughout the season and progressed as their seasons went on. It was fun to watch the progress each player made.

The Danville Baseball Academy is entering its 17th season in the Fall of 2022 and into the Spring of 2023. Danville Baseball Academy is an all in one program for anyone interested in their baseball or softball needs!!! We do private and group lessons, camps, clinics, skill specific classes, and club teams from 9U-18U. We take pride in developing young men and woman into great ball players and even better people. We have always said, “it isn’t about the wins or chasing down trophies, it’s all about the training, development, learning the game, and getting them ready to play at the next level.”

We finished the summer with our SOLD OUT 7 week camp session located at our very own fields on the Athenian School Campus. At our camps the approach is simple, have fun and learn the game. We have established a system of progressive training, specific skills sets one week leading into the next set of skills the following week. The skills and game awareness our players learn is invaluable. Our 5:1 player to coach ratio allows for unique individual attention during our ever so popular camps!! What so many people don’t realize, once you get bitten by the swim bug, is that it’s with you for life. So, just because our regular summer season is over, it doesn’t mean that all our swimmers are out of the water. So many are already back in the water doing the Fall Swim Program. If you have questions, please contact Coach Sean Quackenbush at seanq@blackhawkcc.org The Fall Program has several different tiers tailored to fit all swimmers of all ages. As our kids head back to school, we reflect on the fabulous “Hip HOX” summer. Our kids got to fully spread their wings this past summer for the first time in two years as Covid restrictions were lifted. The neon colors mixed with our passion for Teal and the hot pink County caps made a nice mix this summer. The kickoff where the families came to see what the theme was and reunite with their swim families to the time trials. We could not have asked for a more perfect summer with the weather this season! Not too hot, not too cold. We escaped smoke (we knew too much about what an AQI was in past years) days this summer. We love a good party, both for the kids and for the parents. We celebrate the youngers with our eight and under party, the big kids go to Santa Cruz, and the adults had a fabulous white party this year. And so much in between. Hike to the Hawk, Lip Sync, “MoHox” (you must see it to believe it), Funday Fridays, VSA. If this is something that sounds like you want to be a part of, you are in luck, because we will do it again next summer!

We want to thank our coaches for their dedication to our kids over the summer. Coaching a swim season isn’t a regular five day a week job. They are on deck before 8am during the week and you will see them there well past 3 or 4pm any given weekday. It doesn’t stop there. Swim is pretty much a seven day a week job in the summer. Some meets we are given 7:15am warm-up times, which means our coaches are on deck as early as 6:45am on a Saturday or Sunday morning. These meets can go as late (and some of them did this summer!) as 5pm. Our coaches are the best. They show up with smiles, give our kids their all and are the last ones to leave still smiling. Many of our coaches have families of their own, this takes away from their family time. We want them to know how much we appreciate them and their dedication to our kids, thank you! If you are taking a swim break, we look forward to seeing you next summer. Have a wonderful break and we can’t wait to hear what you’ve been doing in your “off” time.

You’re standing by the window, staring into the yard as you sip your warm cup of tea. You smile to yourself, thinking of all of the beautiful memories you’ve created with the kids and loved ones over the years in this house.

• Qualify for your replacement home mortgage without income documentation or employment verification even if you’re retired, in-between jobs, or self-employed with low “verifiable” income.

Suppose you’ve considered buying a smaller home, but the thought of selling your home, moving somewhere temporarily, and the big ordeal that comes with it becomes overwhelming. In that case, the following is perfect for you.

• Compete and win with a stronger purchase position by making a non-contingent offer on your next home.

As you reminisce a few minutes, the house starts to feel a little quiet and a bit large, now that the kids are grown and moved out. Is downsizing a good idea at this point?

• Close on your new home, move in, and then have your agent sell your vacant & fully staged existing home for maximum value after you’ve moved out.

• Good Credit • Post-closing reserves (money in the bank after closing)

The NINE Loan is the first and only home loan that does NOT require income or employment on the application.

• Obtain your new home financing driven entirely by a 25% down payment OR your existing home’s equity, sufficient post-closing reserves, and a decent mid-FICO score.

Introducing The NINE Loan!

How to qualify: • Substantial equity or down payment

Now You Can Buy Before You Sell

Unlike traditional loans, the NINE loan provides the excellent benefit of staying in your current home while obtaining your new one. Additional benefits of buying your next home before having to sell first:

If you’re considering the opportunity to buy before you sell, the NINE Loan may be the solution for you. For more information, visit www. BuyBeforeSell.com or www.TheNINELoan.com.

He sits for treats and is gentle when taking them from your hand.. He has the potential to get along with a well-matched dog. If you are looking for a devoted companion, please check out Chuck! Meet little Jazmine - a sweet and frisky kitten who Gidget and Gadget arrived at the East County Animal Shelter with their sister Gemma when they were only two weeks old. They were immediately taken into TVAR’s bottle baby program where they were bottle-raised in a foster home and then weaned onto wet and dry kitten food. They are incredibly loveable and holdable kittens and will show their affection with loud purrs and face rubs. Gidget is very chatty and will meow, purr, and rub on you during petting sessions. Gadget is just as sweet but has more of a wild, playful side. Gidget and Gadget’s sister, Gemma, has already found her forever home, but these two beautiful girls are still awaiting theirs. They have grown quite bonded since their sister was adopted and would love to go to the same forever home together. They are spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and tested negative for FIV/FeLV.

If you were having flash backs to Forest Gump and all things shrimp you are not far wrong, but this time we are talking Zucchini – the ultimate in versatile vegetables. Zucchini suffers from prolific reproduction during the summer. Friends have been known to draw their blinds and lock their doors when they see me coming with an armload of zucchinis. But did you know all the benefits the humble zucchini delivers? The zucchini along with its squash brethren started in the America’s but were quickly adopted by the Europeans. The Italians dubbed it zucchino – little squash. It came back to America in the 1920’s but was largely ignored for the next 50 years. However, by the mid 70’s frugal homemakers were incorporating zucchini creatively into a multitude of recipes.

Summer Fruit Salad

By Parisa Z. Ambwani, Resident since 1983

There are a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables available during the summer months. Enjoying their nutrients in a balanced diet is Mother Nature’s way of refreshing our inner world (body, mind, and spirit) and aligns us with Nature’s peaceful life energy.

Holistic Journey: Try emptying your mind of negative thoughts by taking refuge in God. The creation and regeneration of positive thinking will bear the fruits of self-esteem without selfishness. Parisa Z. Ambwani---------All rights reserved www.enlightenedrecipes.com

The Loma Prieta Region of the Porsche Club of America (“LPR”) cruised into Blackhawk Plaza on February 27, 2022. The LPR, based in Santa Cruz County and the South Bay, began their day with an early morning road trip to the Blackhawk Museum. While these Porsche enthusiasts certainly enjoy the camaraderie of a road trip, they have a full slate of other activities such as autocross, technical sessions, rallies, social events and fundraisers. Sound like an exciting group? Well, the LPR has been going strong for over 50 years, has over 500 members and is known as the “Good Times Region.” But it is not just fun and games. The LPR has twice been recognized by the PCA as the “Region of the Year.” One last thought, while Porsche has expanded its lineup beyond two-door sports cars to include four-door sedans, SUVs and EVs, you will notice that I have elected to showcase the iconic 911.

David Tom: I have lived in Danville for 30 years. I retired from the corporate tax world and now pursue a variety of projects that interest me. I have always loved cars and look forward to sharing them with you. and

You can experience these brand new Breitling collections at the Padis Napa location nestled among First Street’s fantastic restaurants, luxury shopping and tasting rooms, and just down the street from Oxbow Public Market located within the Hotel Andaz. The Napa Padis location at 1400 First Street features an enormous selection of sought-after brand names like Tacori and Breitling, as well as one of California’s largest collections of Verragio and Forevermark diamonds, which are ethically-sourced and traced from mine to finger.

Today, Breitling is releasing new SuperOcean models that are inspired by the company’s designs from the ‘60s, particularly the SuperOcean Slow Motion. This original model used a modified Venus 188 movement that propelled a chronograph hand around the dial once an hour. This hand could be read against a 60-minute indicator to track elapsed time. It was hard to tell if the chronograph was running at a glance, so an indicator was placed at six o’clock that let the wearer know if it was running or not.

The partnership of the Breitling Bar and Padis Tasting Lounge provides a relaxing environment to experience some of the newest re-launched Breitling collections, the Navitimer and the SuperOcean. You can also browse the extensive collection of brand new Breitling time pieces and learn about Breitling history all within the Overspace.the last few years, Breitling has invested a tremendous amount of resources into establishing its connection with aviation and re-launching some of its most iconic watches. The Navitimer is one of Breitling’s most celebrated designs. Willy Breitling dreamed up the watch in the early ‘50s to directly aid pilots in the cockpit. He called it the Navigation Timer, or “Navitimer.” The watch featured a rotating slide rule on the bezel that worked in conjunction with the chronograph to make cockpit calculations easier. The Breitling Navitimer became commonplace with the aviation set. It was considered a worthy tool. With this new Navitimer collection, Breitling is throwing the doors open to anyone. Since the slide rule in the cockpit is part of aviation days of the past, this Navitimer is attractive to folks who have never handled an airplane’s stick and rudder before. It’s less serious and more focused on fun in 2022. In the mid-1950’s, Breitling started producing dive watches alongside their aviation line, called the SuperOcean. Production has steadily continued since then, with the SuperOcean becoming a big part of Breitling’s identity. The design of the SuperOcean line has evolved

The new SuperOcean doesn’t feature the chronograph complication from the original – but they do borrow the thick minute track and boxy minute hand from the SuperOcean Slow Motion. They also stay true to the original by not including a date window. These design decisions create a diver that’s balanced and simple, while also boasting a distinct visual character that isn’t derivative in the least. Inside is the Breitling Caliber 17 in a no-frills timeonly configuration. While Breitling doesn’t usually focus on their dive watch heritage, the new SuperOcean proves that when they do, they do it right.

When it comes to the new SuperOcean, Breitling tapped their ambassador Kelly Slater. In the collection there’s a 1,000-piece limited edition “Kelly Slater” model in 42mm. Slater explains that this collection is extra sentimental for him as “it’s inspired by my late father, who had a watch with an orange face that he used to wear surfing for as long as I can remember.”
