he first day of competition saw the first round of competition of Open Surfing category where past champions and developing athletes managed to advance to the second round where wave conditions were very misleading and difficult for competitors. This is where surfers and competitors proved themselves, as the waves did not allow surfers to perform radical maneuvers but to do what is necessary to advance to the next round. Shane Castro, the defending champion, had a concrete participation in achieving progress comfortably to the first position and to the second round, as well as Marcos Galindo with the best score of the day. Samuel Suvalsky, Mitchell Salazar, Willy Salazar and Fernando Dominguez and others also managed to advance. The second and final day of competition delivered better surf conditions than the previous day as well as the same weather conditions. The atmosphere on the beach could not have been better as competitors and spectators were amazed with the weather the beautiful port of Mazatlan was giving them that Sunday in February. In the quarterfinals, the same surfers moved on closer to the throne of Mr. Shane Castro as well as several prospects for years to come, such as Ricardo Gamboa. In the first semifinal, Fernando Dominguez and Ricardo Gamboa advanced, wiping Samuel Suvalsky and eliminating defending champion, Shane Castro in the process.

In the second semifinal Mitchell Salazar got the two best scores of the day, forwarding him with confidence to the first place with his cousin Willy Salazar in second place and eliminating Sergio Estrada and Marcos Galindo (who was a favorite to reach the final), unfortunately the ocean did not favor Mitchell, as he could not catch more than a wave in the semifinal. In the final many emotions were rushing among the four competitors, many happy expressions and many others of disappointment but for the final competitors to be at the top was profit. Twenty minutes of pure adrenaline were lived when the final four competitors were into the waves. focused and determined to win and conquer the sea.

n the countdown at the beach, excitement and joy were felt by everyone in general and we all felt it stronger when Willy Salazar, in a very poor and slow end of waves, found the two best waves of the heat and the he surfed them to their full potential leaving no doubt who was the best surfer in the final and crowned himself champion of the event. In second place was the 18-year-old surprise: Ricardo Gamboa, who reached his first final in Open Surfing category, making himself a place in the major leagues. In 3rd place was Fernando Dominguez, who comes from winning the Midsummer Classic held in the month of August last year, expecting to achieve two wins in a row. Not to mention the fourth place, Mitchell Salazar, who could not find a wave until minus five seconds in the final because surf conditions did not favor him at all, but still was very happy and grateful with his participation as well as very happy for his cousin, Willy, who earned his first victory at the local championships. Needless to say, the 2016 Winter Classic was a success. Wave conditions were not the best, but surfers did as best as they could with what they were given and that is a victory in itself for all competitors, because those who actually came out champions were the spectators who had summer weather in the coldest part of winter

When and how was born Pacific Pearl Music? Pacific Pearl Music was created in January 2014, the idea came from realizing the lack of local venues for alternative music, after a year of throwing parties at La Corriente, we decided to create a musical promoter of our own, so that people in Mazatlan feel more familiar with this. Tell us about your current status as resident DJ at La Corriente. I know you might be in the process of changing things up for future shows, what can we expect? Currently my status as resident DJ at La Corriente is a little like the beginning, the difference is that we are now more connected. Thinking ahead, we hope that our house, La Corriente, and the people who come to party keep supporting us the way they have done so far. There have been ideas with Sergio De Cima, to start planning larger events, like the ones we had in Easter Week last year, Halloween parties, among other events, I think we just need some government support. Who are some of the artists that have influenced you in defining your goals as a DJ? Many artists from different genres, for electronic music, one of my favorites is Phil Weeks, ShurI-Kan, Shonky to mention a few, but I have also been influenced by artists like James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield , Al Green, Bil Withers, Barry White, Stevie Wonder, among others of that time.

40

What can you tell us about the electronic scene that you’ve been involved with since 2012? Who else is involved and how would you describe the experience of collaborating from this part of Mexico, has it been well received? I have been a DJ since 2007, upon returning to Mazatlan in December 2012 to date, there have been very good changes in the “scene” we have built in Mazatlan. Hopefully, Pacific Pearl Music will keep on growing thanks to the support from young locals. Involved in this movement, Sergio De Cima is a person who has supported us big time, Diego García and David Arévalo who are vital part of the team, and Sergio Reynosa who unfortunately died in April 2015. I think we already shine a bit on the national scene, since people from other cities already locate us and know the work that is being done here in Mazatlán. We have received very good reviews; the big advantage is that we live in a very beautiful port. What can you tell us about podcasts and social networks concerning Pacific Pearl Music? Is there a next material to which we should be aware? The Podcasts which in this case is called “Pearlcasts” are having really good feedback, we are very pleased to receive support from producers and DJs, both Mexican and international, there are over 35 mixtapes to back our words. The next material you should be vigilant for is our first VA (Various Artists), which consists in around 10 tracks, handpicked and totally free for our fans.

Some words for our readers? Thanks to the people who have supported this movement, and attended to our parties, this is for you to enjoy and have a new alternative to have fun and live the moment, and those who have not supported us or don’t know us, do not be afraid to explore the “new stuff” I can assure you will have fun, but mostly thank you Mazatlán for all that we have built together.
