Daye was raped at a church convention at the age of 11; a teenage run-away, and in her first abusive relationship at the age of 13. Bad choices, and hanging with the wrong crowd led Daye to a youth detention facility and classified as a juvenile delinquent at the age of 14—she was incarcerated for two years. After her release from the youth detention facility, Daye was still searching to fulfill the void of emptiness she carried in her spirit since the beginning of her abusive journey. In search for love and acceptance she found herself wrapped in the arms of another abusive man at the age of 17. How did she survive? Daye shares this story as her testimony that God and her gift of poetry was truly her savior. Through poetry she capturesall generations and gives hope to those facing the same obstacles she has overcome. Capturing the poetry scene by storm at the young age of 19, she performed at her first open mic at Yancy’s Night Club in Raleigh, North Carolina. The release of her first book, And You Thought You Had Problems: Well This Is My Life,in January 2004 directed her path towards community activism, poetry slams, theatrical performances, community organizing, workshop facil-
ver, University of Pembroke), and churches (Union Baptist, Victorious Praise, Mount Zion AME, Compassion Ministries, Trinity AME, New Hope Baptist, New Life Community Church) across the East and West coast—Albuquerque, New Mexico, Vermont, Chicago, Denver, Colorado, Austin, Texas, Montgomery, Alabama, Jacksonville, Florida, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Manhattan, New York, Atlanta, Georgia, Columbia, South Carolina, Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, and many others in the last 10 years. She has been a guest feature on several local and national radio programs; raising awareness on women’s issues, domestic violence, sexual abuse, child abuse, HIV prevention, and gang violence; just to name a few. Organizing and performing at Bimbe, Centerfest, Martin Luther King Festival, National Organization for Women, Hip-Hop Feminist Nation, Durham Parks and Recreation Community Day, Juneteenth, and many others. Daye has graced stages with legends of poetry such as The Last Poets in 2007, and been an opening act for Adina Howard, and Ky-mani Marley. As the founder of STANDUP- SPEAK OUT, Monica's personal mission is to speak out and act out against sexual violence and domestic abuse. STANDUP-SPEAKOUT (S.U.S.O) was founded in the spring 2005, a community outreach program against domestic violence and sexual assault. Daye organized S.U.S.O's first series of community events in April 2005 to promote awareness on violence against women. In addition to community awareness S.U.S.O launched its first community-wide collection drive in April 2005--collecting personal hygiene items for battered women’s shelters and rape crisis centers in the state of North Carolina. Since the launching of S.U.S.O the programs and services have expanded which has led the small outreach program into the direction of becoming a state and nationally recognized non-profit organization.
itation, media marketing, and radio personality— talents she never knew she possessed. Since dedicating her life fulltime to the gift of poetry and the women’s movement, Daye has featured at many of the local poetry venues, universities, (North Carolina Central University, University of Chapel Hill, Meredith College, NC State University, Shaw University, Duke University, University of Vermont, University of Den- 10 -

Deep”. Produced by ME MusicWorks Studio in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, the album sold over 7,500 copies underground within the first year. 7 Days of Freedomis a classic collectible for now and future generations. In addition, she also featured in Healing through Spoken Word: A Survivor’s Story;a documentary released in October 2009—addressing domestic violence and the healing benefits of spoken word. Founder and Organizer for Shairi’s “Spit That Poetry” (2005-2008); a local poetry venue held in Durham was rated the #1 poetry venue in North Carolina. Shairi’s open mic was more than a regular poetry venue, it stood on community morals and values, and family--a relaxed atmosphere full of good vibes, and positive energy—a place where people was not only entertain but educated as well. Welcoming the stage to all generations with a 7 year old being the youngest poet to perform at Shairi’s. Shairi’s Radio WXDU 88.7fm (2006-2008) was a collaboration with the poetry venue, bringing the stage to the airwaves. Daye created a platform for local and national underground artist to be heard on radio airwaves, addressing real issues happening in the world-allowing the community to voice their thoughts and poetry for the world to hear. The show aired for three years every Friday night until December 2008 when Daye decided to say goodbye to Shairi’s to focus on personal goals—family and education. With a Major in Psychology Daye continues her studies in Art Therapy and Holistic Healing, with a goal to receive her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. She envisions ways to utilize the arts as a way to aid people in overcoming traumatic experiences. Using her own life journey as model for a therapeutic process, Daye has effectively used poetry, music, journal writing, visual arts, drama and dance as way to unlock the mystery of pain that hindered her own emotional instability. As a therapist she plans to work with victims of abuse and batterers to get at the root causes and to end the vicious cycle of domestic violence. As both a victim of and an abuser, Daye seeks to show the emotional scares caused by abuse, and how those abused grapple with understanding and contending with the consequences of abuse. Monica’s journey is a celebration of the power of transformative change--raped at a young age, abused as an adolescent, troubled and rebellious as a teen, lost and confused as a young adult--words paved the way for the emergence of a powerful new voice. Daye stands up and speaks out to those denied their own voice. She has tackled the confusion caused by pain, and stands on the brink of the unfolding of new possibilities.

tion for kids. And it's success is solely dependent on it's affect on the viewers who were placed in front of the tube to watch it.
Sesame Street is 40 Ebony Burroughs
If the day of 34 was my last day on earth, what would my world say about me. My family, those who I call friend, those who were lucky enough to be called lover... if they remember me, what did I look like through their lenses? And what about me would be missed? I worry sometimes that I will not be remembered, or If I am, it will be for some bullshit like "she was soooooo nice." Who wants to be remembered for nicety. Or "she was soooooo helpful". Who the hell wants to be remembered as a part of a worldwide supporting cast. Then again, maybe that's the role I was slated to play anyway. I wish I was the passionate activist or the talented artist or the all time beauty. I once thought I'd be the wise introverted eccentric who no one would really understand but whose wisdom was always sought after. I like being wise. Sometimes I think I'm really not that wise at all. I fall into the same traps and make some of the same clueless decisions as everyone else. When you get right down to it, I haven't really learned what sets me apart. Connection to the tribe is so important, but an awareness of your own value is essential. Rarity usually makes something that much more valuable.
In November 2009, Sesame Street the television show that stoked the educational fires for so many kids of my generation turned 40 years old. It started thinking about my own birthday. I'll be 34 in a matter of months and words like legacy, remembrance, impact, and value spring to mind. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I still have not settled on who, not what, but Who, I want to be in this life before my days are done. In many ways I find myself struggling to keep others from defining me, but it's inevitable. If what you do defines who you are, then who you affect by what you do naturally comes into play when your wikipedia page is written and posted. If Pasteur created his miracle elixir but never shared it with anyone afflicted with polio, would we even know who he was. Probably not. He is who we know him to be because of how he affected people. In the same way, Sesame Street is recognized by generations for the same reason. It's not some obscure public access show... it's an institution of television educa- 14 -
So, looking into the future, to my 34th birthday, I find myself asking the question that I asked when looking forward to my 23rd, and my 16th, and probably my 12th..."What's so special about me?" Funny how you can see what's so special about everyone else but in yourself, it is not always so clear. I can say that part of what makes me special is my world. What makes up my world are the chosen few I have been allowed to be in it. I think they make me valuable just by sharing their gifts and blessings with me. Through them I get to be all of the things that I admire. The scholar, the star, the beauty, the artist, the thinker, the nurturer, the stylista, the fighter, the rock, the spokesperson, the teacher, the comic, the loved, and the lover. So many combinations to try on, like putting together the perfect outfit. I guess it's not so bad, fitting together pieces of those you admire and sometimes envy until you find the perfect color, style, and fit for yourself. We are all just reflections of each other anyway, good and bad, and it's part of the growth process to identify the best you see in others as simply a reflection of what is or is potentially a best of yourself. Maybe when I stop to ponder the coming of my 35th, someone will see their best self potential reflected back at them when they look at me.

LOVE: The Devalued Virtue!
What have we done to the one thing that everyone desires to have? It seems as though society has perceptually turned a positive into a negative. Love today seems to be a very controversial word. It has gone from being the thread that holds people together, to being the hands that tear them apart. Love has in the past been the word that has transcended re-

lationships to higher heights. It seems today that this same word is being held responsible for our failed relationships. Some people argue that love is misused; others argue that love is misunderstood. I believe that love is misunderstood which leads to it being misused. When there is no understanding of what something is, there can be no appreciation for its value. I believe that society has devalued love to a point that there is no appreciation for it anymore. What are we allowing to define love for us? Is it the media, is it our relationship experiences, is it other people, is it the Bible or is it a combination of them all? We see images on television which we allow to define for us what love is. We go through relational experiences with people

and allow those experiences to define for us what love is. We even hold love responsible for our heartache and pain; Even sometime to the point that we question if true love actually exists. Sometimes our life experiences cause us to question if loving someone is worth the risk of possibly being hurt. The fear of the unknown can make or break you. Is it really love that’s to blame for the hurt we sometime experience due to our feelings being hurt? There are many who would say yes. Truth be told, the people who we love are the ones who have the greater potential to hurt us the most; but that doesn’t mean that they will. What is it that makes people who experience unjust treatment in relationships blame it on love? What is it that makes people define love based on their bad relationship experiences? Often times we as people say we will never love again after loving someone and being unsuccessful in a relationship. It would seem to me that the thing to do would be to examine the relationship and see what lead to it being unsuccessful. What is it that makes people blame love for the hurt instead of doing some self evaluation? Is it the fear of discovering something about us that may not line up with our perceived self image? Could it be that its easier to supMAY 2011 EDITION
press the issue to avoid dealing with it? Maybe it’s a combination of the two. When we examine the images that are portrayed in the media about love, what are they suggesting? Has love really turned in to something that can be competed for? Is love really something that we are willing to voluntarily make a fool out of our selves for? We have shows that range from Flavor of love, The Bachelor, I Love New York, For the Love of Ray-J and the list goes on. Have we really devalued love to a point where this is what we think love really is? When did love become something that is to be competed for? When did love become something that we win based on embarrassing ourselves on national television? There are many who would argue that people know better than to follow the examples they see on these reality shows, but I beg to differ. Anything that we take in will always manifest itself eventually in some form. Men and women ask the same questions in relation to one another, but very rarely do they talk to each other about how to get questions answered. I believe that one of the biggest problems in our relationships today is that we are allowing false images to define for us what “love” is. For those of us who believe in God, we should search the word for the answers as to what love is and how we should show it to one another. Instead many of us have turned to everything but the word of God. We sometimes allow what sounds good in the moment to overshadow out better judgment.. We watch shows and we read books thinking they have the answer to what love is and how to find it, but we overlook the book that has stood the test of time.
MAY 2011 EDITION
Hosea 4: 6 says that my people perish for a lack of knowledge. We are seeing many relationships perish due to many individuals having no knowledge of what a relationship really is. Even when unsure, why is it that we turn to everything else but the word of God. We have allowed the media, music and even books to define love for us even when its definition is contrary to the word of God. For those of us who believe, why is this a reality? We question what we read in the bible even when the bible has been proven, but we don’t question what we read in today’s popular books. This can be dangerous; especially when there is no understanding that everything we see and read doesn’t lend itself to fit every situation. The bible says in Proverbs 4:7 that “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all your getting get understanding.” Wisdom is the ability to discern what is true, right, or lasting. Deep, thorough, or mature understanding is what should be the basis for making any decision. Even when we step out on faith, we already know and understand some things about God, and we believe that God will take care of us based on what he has already done in the past. We have allowed false images and sometimes misinterpretation of what we see, hear and read to cause us to blame situations, circumstances and sometimes other people for things that we ourselves are responsible for. Its never that two people are incompatible; it is the expectations that individuals bring to a relationship that are sometimes incompatible. This is an issue that causes many of us to blame love or even a relationship for the cause of our pain; when often times it’s the expectations that need to be checked and examined. Its never love that causes the pain, it’s the outcomes we get that are based on the decisions we have made that sometimes lead to us being hurt.
BLACKOPPS ENTERTAINMENT
- 17 -
The question for us as individuals has to be this; When do we check our expectations to see if they line up with the word of God? God said that he would supply all our needs according to his riches in glory. If God addresses our needs and promises to take care of those, why do we expect people to fulfill everything we want out of them? This is not love. Do we ever consider that maybe what we say we want, may not be what God desires for us? Do we even consider that maybe the standards that we are setting for others may not line up with the word of God or even his will for our lives. Many of these things have nothing to do with love or even God for that matter. Often times we base these standards and wants on what we feel we deserve. We must first be sure we are living up to the standard that God expects from us. We have to be careful when we create standards for others because this may lead to disappointment and even disagreement, especially if we think that unfulfilled standards equate to not being loved. I have heard men/women say that they want someone to love them the way they want to be loved; this is stated never considering the fact that if this were to occur, that still may not be the best of that person. One should rather desire for someone to love them to the fullest of that person's capacity; not to the point where they put you on the same level with God though. There still has to be an understanding that even through being loved, everything doesn't always feel good. God loves us, but our dealings with him can seem in the moment to sting, but in the end He has our best interest at heart, and we learn that we, just like plants and vines, have to be pruned. What we should all desire is to treat others the way we want to be treated; that’s love. 1 Corinthians 13 describes for us the attributes and the excellence of love. Everything it states are things each of us would desire for someone to show towards us. It also encompasses the idea of treating others the way we would want to be treated. I believe that this is the beginning of understanding what it means to love someone. You do for them what you would want done towards you, not because you have to, but because you want to because of the Spirit of God which is in you motivating you to show His love in your actions. Understanding that while you will always have some tough times in your relational dealings with people on any level, never allow anything to make you act out of your Godly character. I will end with this. Watch your thoughts for they become you actions, watch your actions for they become your habits, watch your habits for they become your character, and watch your character for that tells the world who you are!
