Nine-year-old Bradley Sharples claimed a gold, three silvers and two bronzes, also swimming seven PBs to finish third overall in his age category.
The other gold winner was Alex Ward, who also managed two bronzes and eight PBs. Hanna Roe was also third in the nine-year-olds’ category thanks to her three silvers, three bronzes and six PBs. Liam Sutcliffe was third in the 12-year-old group after recording two silvers, two bronzes and four PBs. Other outstanding performers included: Jack Stanney (one silver, two bronze, six PBs), Alex Myers (silver, bronze, nine PBs), Jack Hirst (silver, four PBs), Amber Taylor (silver, four PBs), Jacob Hancock (silver, PB), James Taylor (bronze, two PBs), captain Dominic Roe (five PBs), Sam Ormerod (four PBs) and Phoebe Brown (three PBs). Joint-head coach Elliott Myers said: “I’m looking to use these results as a stepping stone as the squad prepares for the Lancashires in March.”
Lytham girls win place in play-offs
Niamh is a gym ace CLEVELEYS gymnast Niamh Bonnett has been selected for Lancashire. The eight-year-old Larkholme Primary is one of five Garstang School of Gymnastics members whose efforts have been rewarded with a county call-up for 2009. Niamh, who lives on West Drive, trains for nine hours a week. She completed four hours of rigorous strength and conditioning testing to win her place in a county squad, which will meet regularly in preparation for competitions against other counties. Niamh’s brother James is also a successful gymnast and trains at Garstang.
Fylde duo will fight for county title glory
LYTHAM Girls beat Havant at home 5-4 to reach the final play-offs of the AllEngland Girls Under-15 Cup. Alix Townsend put Lytham ahead inside ten minutes and a great run from Natasha Singleton set up Sophie Crawshay to make it 2-0. Lytham goalkeeper Elani Cullen made some excellent saves before Lytham scored a third through Charlotte Evans. Havant struck back to level it up at 3-3 but Crawshay restored Lytham’s lead and then comlpleted her hat-trick. Even then Havant weren’t finish and a late goal meant Lytham had to withstand severe pressure in a nervy last few minutes. The play-offs are at Birmingham University next month.
Arnold girls’ runaway victory over Kirkham THE Arnold Year 7 hockey players were in fine form against local rivals King Edward and Queen Mary’s. Daisy Bradley’s pace down the right punched big holes in the Lytham team’s defence in the A game and Arnold led 3-0 at half-time. They added five more without replay in the second half, with Francesca Beeby and Sophia Fowler (left) outstanding. Arnold B improved after reorganising at half-time but they still
fell behind, despite strong defending by Francesca Clarke. This galvanised Arnold, who pulled level with a fine solo goal by Abigail Richardson and went on to seal a 4-1 win. Arnold also fell behind playing away in a thrilling C match but hit back after half-time with goals by Lucy Walker and Imogen Hirsh. KEQMS responded with two of their own to lead 3-2 before Lydia Gabbitas scored the lastminute equaliser.
OUTSTANDING athletes from Newton Bluecoat and Lytham St Annes High have done the Fylde proud on the county stage. Both schools qualified to the represent the Wyre and Fylde Partnership at the county indoor championships at Clayton Green sports centre. More than 500 schoolchildren from across the Fylde coast had taken part in a massive athletics competition organised by the Wyre and Fylde Partnership to determine the two representatives. After a host of track and field events, including relays, lap races, long jump and triple jump, the overall winners were Newton Bluecoat emerged as the top primary school, while Lytham St Annes HS won the secondary competition for Years 7 and 8. Carr Head Primary from Poulton was the highestscoring Wyre primary. Among the 14 champion schools competing at Clayton Green, Newton Bluecoat finished third. And Lytham HS only just missed out on gold, finishing a highly creditable second.

Oliver’s on his mettle BLACKPOOL and Fylde schools U14 champion Oliver Hives added to his tally of 40 badminton medals with one which places him firmly among the England elite. Lytham boy Oliver won silver at a top tournament in Leigh, reaching his first final since gaining England bronze status. The event at Leigh Sports Village featured 26 elite players from across the north of England. Having first won his group with some fine attacking play, Lytham St Annes HS pupil Oliver defeated Andrew Brown of Derbyshire 21-10 in the quarter-final. That earned him a semifinal showdown with Lancashire team mate James
Gregory ,which he won 21-9. But in the final against Duy Tran, Oliver led 13-12 only to see his opponent hit a rich vein of form to triumph 21-13. Recently featured in AllStars as a member of the Warton Juniors side which won the Blackpool Schools’ competition, Oliver has also joined Fleetwood Badminton Club and plays for one of their open age teams in the Blackpool and Fylde League. If he can reach another ‘England bronze’ final, he will rise to England silver status.

YMCA 0 Fleetwood Town 2 FLEETWOOD bounced back well after successive defeats but chances were limited in the first half, though a Jordan Heslop free-kick sailed wide. Town keeper Geoff Wylie tipped a fierce Chris Clinch drive over the bar as YMCA pressed late in the half. Town reshuffled after the break and Liam Sharpe, Callum Hargreaves and Jacob Smith linked up well down the left for Tommy Dollin to fire home. Smith raced on to a long ball to seal the win five minutes from time. This was a setback to YMCA’s title ambitions despite a fine performance by Tommy Harrison. Lytham 3 Wyre 0 LYTHAM made the early running and led after 10 minutes, when Joe Seker’s cross was headed home by Andrew Sanderson. More Lytham pressure was rewarded just before half-time when Seker scored after good work down the right by Isaac Bonfiglio. Another Seker cross laid on Sanderson’s second after the break, with Jack Wood and Richard Stringer always firm in defence. Foxhall A 0 Kirkham A 1 JACKSON Ashworth scored the all-important second-half goal, while Tom Gargett never stopped running and keeper Matt Guthrie pulled off a fine late save as Kirkham remain unbeaten in the league. Foxhall put up a good fight but could not force an equaliser. Tyler Parker-Starkie and keeper Jack Stinger were outstanding in a fine team effort. Kirkham B 5 BJFF 3 KIRKHAM started confidently and Sam Royle gave them an early lead. With the wind behind them, Kirkham rattled in four more goals before half-time through Ben Wilson, Jack Kay, Matt Bamber and Royle’s second. Kirkham then had to defend in the second half but held out for their second win of the season despite goals by Edwards, Aspinall and Grogan. This was a great improvement, with James Harrison and Corey Holding strong at the back, and Matt Bamber and Josh Eales tremendous in midfield. Warton 3 Layton 2 WARTON scored the only goal of a tight first half in which chances were at a premium. Both sides defended well, though Layton started the second half better, soon equalising through Alex Smith. Dominic Lavelle put Layton ahead after good work by Josh Griffiths only for Warton to hit back with two goals. Jamayne Rodaway went close to a late equaliser but his shot shaved the post. Graham, Langley and Walsh were the Warton scorers.
SHARP SHORE: South Shore Under-12s on the ball against St Annes UNDER-12
by half-time as Williams rounded the keeper for his second. Josh Kay worked tirelessly in the Shore midfield and two more Williams strikes, taking his tally for the season to 48, put them in control. Darvill completed the scoring and Williams struck the post with the final kick. Kieran Hindle was superb at left-back for Shore and Connor Walsh impressed on his debut in midfield. Robbie Morris was St Annes’ man of the match and James Naylor was tireless in midfield.
Fleetwood Town 1 Spirit of Youth 0 TOWN won this tight contest with a goal five minutes from the end. Matt Chadwick’s dead-ball deliveries brought first-half chances for Ben Reader and James Lydon but neither hit the target, while man of the match Charlie Bradford, Kieran Anderson, Reece Young and Danny Haines were solid at the back. Chadwick was also involved in the goal, winning the ball and feeding skipper Reader, who in turn played in Josh Robinson for a cool finish.
FC Rangers 4 Staining 1 Dela Cruz ended Staining’s goal drought to give them the lead in this fine match. Rangers fought back to lead 2-1 at halftime through Kerr and Dunlop. Kerr completed his hat-trick after the break, while Bramhall was also outstanding for Rangers, rattling the bar with a 20yard strike. Staining had chances too in an impressive performance.
Poulton 7 Lytham 1 POULTON recorded a much-needed win, Oliver Hughes opening the scoring with a 35-yard effort. Four more first-half goals followed, with two for Tom Morrison, one for Tom Ardron and another long-range Hughes strike. Josh Payne scored twice after the break and Ryan Worthington pulled one back for Lytham. Midfielder Sam Willam was the man of the match in a disciplined Poulton display.
South Shore 5 St Annes 1 SHORE pulled clear in the final quarter but St Annes played their full part in an exciting game. St Annes had Tom Bradley’s headed goal ruled out for offside in the first minute, but with Ryan Darvill and Stevie Higgins a threat for Shore out wide, Jack Williams fired in the opener. Bradley’s superb free-kick did count for the equaliser but Shore were back in front

After the break, goals by Daniel Wilson, Joe Darnell and two from Danny Warren sealed the win, while Luke Myler was man of the match. Foxhall 1 Thornton 0 FOXHALL moved up to fourth with this valuable win. The sides cancelled each other out until Ryan Long’s fine free-kick was converted by Markkus Pemberton. Danny Vickers was outstanding in the Foxhall defence, with George Nicholls in fine form in goal. Spirit ofYouth 0YMCA 5 YMCA ran out comfortable winners at Common Edge, where Ryan Allan went close twice before setting up Ryan Riley for the opener. And excellent Sam Montgomery strike made it 2-0 at half-time and Paul Deeley fired home from 25 yards. Allan netted the fourth before a spectacular Sean Ayrton strike completed the win, with Zenda Stemp, Keil Fieldhouse and Oliver Drury all going close. Wyre Juniors 0 Lytham 8 MIDFIELDER Charlie Goldie-Galloway was the man of the match in this excellent team effort. There were two goals each for Nathan Frodsham, Dan Witham and Mitch White, who also deserves credit for sharing the goalkeeping duties with Jack Ward. The impressive Sam Webster and Sam Lamb scored too, while Leroy McGregor also gave a good display. Blackpool Rangers 4 St Annes 2 TWO goals apiece from Jackson and Openshaw sealed Rangers’ wins, although St Annes had plenty of possession and chances.
Joshua Lacey kneed the opening goal for the visitors after a great free-kick from man of the match Gavin Annetts. Charlotte Brooks went close and Kirby Blyth had a shot well saved, while Maddie Lauder and Kelsey Hargreaves were quick to stamp out any danger at the other end. Jade Terry’s cool finish gave Fleetwood the lead midway through the first half and it remained 1-0 at half-time. Anna Reynolds increased the lead with a strike from outside the box, then Terry almost flicked in another before Lucy Johnson smashed the third into the top corner. Olivia Copeland’s clearance began the move which led to Murphy’s hat-trick goal. Accrington pulled one back but Murphy netted her fourth straight from the restart to make it 4-1 at half-time. O’Cleirigh struck the post before getting the goal she deserved from a strong run into the box. There was time for Murphy to set twice more to take her tally to six, while Sophie Bishop and Olivia Cooper kept AGSA at bay and Katie Dogson caught the eye.

Revenge sweet for the Arnold finalists
ARNOLD School’s first XV made it third time lucky in this season’s series of thrilling matches against Manchester Grammar, and were rewarded with a place in the Lancashire Plate final.
Manchester had won the previous encounters 23-22 and 6-3, showing just how well matched these sides are, and the Under-18 plate semi was another thriller in which Arnold were short of numerous regulars, including injured captain Sam Cole. The ever-reliable boot of Liam Hill gave Arnold an early three-point lead in Manchester but MGS soon equalised with a penalty of their own. Speedy winger Nick Costello scored the opening try after strong runs by Chris West and Hill, who added the extras. Again Manchester hit back with a converted try but Wilf Whittle finished well to restore Arnold’s lead and Hill added a magnificent conversion. This goal proved crucial as MGS scored a late try but missed the goal to leave Arnold 17-15 winners, clinching a place against Audenshaw or St Edward’s College (Liverpool) in the final . In matches against derby rivals King Edward & Queen
Mary School, Lytham, Arnold Under-11s won 21-0 with tries by Callan Barrow, Matthew Barrett and Jamie Bamber. KEQMS won both Under12 encounters, including an A cracker in which a Sam Lavelle try edged it after two Elliott Fackey penalties put Arnold 6-0 up. They won the B encounter 36-10, with Michael Smith and Zack Hocking scoring the Arnold tries. Arnold’s B teams took on the A teams of Bury GS and the Second XV won 58-5 as Harry McNulty scored four tries. There were wins for the Under-13s (19-12) and Under12s (48-0), who also had a four-try hero in Alex VowlesBradley. The Under-14s lost 12-6 in the dying seconds and the Under-15s went down 30-10. ■ AFTER months of trials and representative matches, Arnold Year 11 centre Ben Perkins won selection for the England Under-16 A squad to contest the International Festival at Millfield School in Somerset next month. As reported in The Gazette last Friday, Fylde and Lancashire player Ben, from Ansdell, can now look forward to more training weekends and warm-up matches before the internationals against Scotland, Portugal and France.

KGS dish up feast in Plate
KIRKHAM Grammar School Under13s won the plate competition in the annual Nora Lipscombe Sevens on Sunday. The tournament had not started well for KGS, whose defeats in the group games of the main competition against Warwick School (37-0), St Edward’s (26-19) and Liverpool College (17-7) consigned them to the plate. But they continued to improve beating Bolton School 38-0 and then Stockport 24-5 in the semi-finals, with strong displays from Daniel Jones, Will Lockhart and Adam Coates. Against St Edward’s in the final, KGS raced into a 26-0 lead thanks to tries by Coates (2), Leach and Jones. They held on to win, despite St Edward’s hitting back with four tries, and the triumph bodes well for this month’s National Sevens at Rosslyn Park. ■ KGS Under-15s were 29-3 winners over Bolton on Saturday. Their opponents scored the first points but KGS soon hit back with an excellent try by Precious Nwaokomah. It was 14-3 at half-time following Hall’s try and KGS pulled clear after the break, defending strongly when necessary. The Under-14A team missed out agonisingly on a place in the Lancashire Cup final, after a last-minute try by Manchester GS broke the semi-final deadlock in the semis. Outstanding tries by Scott Rudd and Ben Rhodes-Powers gave KGS a 1-0 lead but Manchester had pulled level by half-time. That late try made the final score 1710, though Charles Redshaw, Marcus Mollinga, Ryan Wilkinson and Matthew Beaty also had great games for the unlucky losers.
