In brief Car owners holding on for five years AS many as 50 per cent of car owners expect to keep their motor for at least five years, a survey has shown. And 27 per cent plan to hold on to their current model for more than seven years, according to the poll by Greenbee Car Insurance, which is part of the John Lewis Partnership. The research among 1,440 adults also showed that 7 per cent intend to keep their car for 11 years. Those aged 65 and over will have their current car for longest, with 43 per cent in this age group saying they will own their vehicle for at least seven years, compared with 24 per cent of those aged 35-44. Those in Wales and south west England look set to keep their cars the longest, with 34 per cent planning to hold on to their vehicle for more than seven years. In contrast, just 23 per cent of Scots intend to keep their vehicle for more than seven years. Only 10 per cent said they would get rid of their current car within two years of purchase. This rises to 23 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds, who are the ones most likely to want to swap the soonest. Just 7 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds and only 8 per cent of those aged 35-44 are planning a change within two years. Greenbee.com managing director James Furse said: “The research demonstrates that, when it comes to their cars, British drivers are keen to tighten their belts and hold on to their current motor for as long as possible in order to keep costs down.’’
Buyers opt to cut corners
CAR buyers are cutting corners to save money during the recession. More than a quarter (28 per cent) are willing to buy from an unknown private seller, a survey by motors.co.uk revealed. And 10 per cent of the 1,642 drivers polled were prepared to opt for a car without knowing anything of its service history as long as the price was right. Also, two per cent said they would even pay for a vehicle over the telephone without having seen it in an effort to save cash. The poll also revealed that 60 per cent did not check that a car was safe and legal, and that the majority were unsure about log books, mileage checks or vehicle identity numbers. Katie Armitage from motors.co.uk added: “There are around seven million used cars bought and sold every year at an average cost of £5,000. “If your new car is found to be illegal you lose this money outright without hope of redress. Our research has found that because of the credit crunch more people are taking risks and so more are prone to being caught out.’’
Alert over MOTs RESEARCH by Kwik-Fit reveals that more than six million motorists may be driving their car without an MoT certificate because they have forgotten the renewal date. The firm says motorists caught driving vehicles without a valid MOT certificate face a £60 fine, and a lapsed MOT can also impact on car insurance and prevent owners from renewing road tax. David White, Kwik-Fit’s customer services director, says forgetting to MoT one’s car is a widespread problem that can have serious consequences. “March is the busiest month for MoTs, so numbers of forgetful motorists driving illegally will escalate over this period.’’

A small price THE ALTO SZ2 A LOT of very clever people have thought long and hard about the future of the automotive industry and the consensus seems to be that cars are going to have to get smaller. That must be music to the ears of Suzuki, a company with half a century of experience in producing small cars. With the age of the gas-guzzler apparently all but up, the market should be moving in the Japanese marque’s direction and the Alto city car could be a major beneficiary, particularly in entry-level SZ2 form. All Suzuki Altos get the same 1.0-litre 3cylinder engine. It’s a modern unit boasting four valves per cylinder and aluminium construction which helps to keep weight down. It generates 66bhp at 6,000rpm and although it can struggle on inclines or when there’s a heavy load on board forcing you to stay on top of the gears, it’s adequate for travelling one-up around town as most city cars tend to do. The engine noise is quite prevalent but it’s not unpleasant and even sounds mildly sporty at higher revs. When cruising, it settles down well and only the wind noise is really noticeable. It’s no longer enough for city cars to be space efficient wheeled boxes. Customers have come to expect a certain cheeky style and the likes of the Fiat 500, smart fortwo and Toyota iQ have delivered it. The Alto isn’t in this league in terms of its cute factor or its price but it’s a far from unappealing proposition with its big teardrop headlights and rising side window line. The C-pillars are rather large and this doesn’t help rear visibility but the five-door body style offers decent practicality. With a couple of six-footers in the front, there’s adequate space for a couple more to squeeze into the back seats. Head room is good and there’s a boot behind of a reasonable but not spectacu-
lar 129-litres that can increase to 367-litres with the seats folded flat. Equipment wise, the Alto turns in a strong performance, even in this entry-level SZ2 form. Power steering, electric front windows, a tiltadjustable steering column, an MP3 compatible CD stereo, remote central locking and a 50:50 split rear seat are all standard. The £500 it costs to upgrade to the SZ3 model only gets you air-conditioning, so costconscious buyers might feel inclined to stay put. The safety equipment includes four airbags and ABS brakes but you’ll need to shell out for the SZ4 model to get ESP stability control. The Alto’s lightweight design allows it to get the most of its 1.0-litre engine and in terms of fuel economy, very few petrol powered cars can touch it.
The Alto can average 64.2mpg on the combined cycle and 51mpg around town where most owners will use it. Accompanied by emissions of just 103g/km and the lowest possible insurance grouping, it makes the Alto one of the most cost-effective purchases in the sector. With the Alto, Suzuki will be looking for its expertise and perseverance over half a century in the small car market to pay off. It’s never had the sector to itself, though, and as buyers turn to more compact and efficient vehicles in growing numbers, so rival manufacturers will be driven to compete more fiercely for sales. The Alto has the capacity to do well in this market but it will rely on its value proposition, so there’s a lot riding on the SZ2 entry-level models. The price is £7,245.

A typically solid German supermini THE POLO THE fifth generation Polo is here but what can we expect from the latest iteration of Volkswagen’s flagship small car product? The answer will surprise nobody that has followed the fortunes of VW over recent years and it’s unlikely to please those who like their superminis with a bit of passion, flair and charisma. The fifth Polo is a lot like the four that went before it: solid, stylish, excellently engineered and looking a lot like a little Golf. It sets lofty standards that only the cream of the current supermini crop can hope to beat. The Polo follows on with the styling theme debuted on the Scirocco coupe and subsequently adapted for the MkVI Golf. The thin grille serves to visually widen and lower the car, giving it a more planted and sporty appearance. Lines are typical Volkswagen, clean and unfussy, the design team led by Walter De Silva playing upon VW’s classless image and steering well clear of the gimmicky styling devices we see elsewhere in the market. There’s certainly nothing to offend traditional Polo customers but compared to some of the sector’s more adventurous styling efforts, the overall look might be too reserved for some tastes. The car certainly looks compact and nuggety but it’s also substantially larger than
it predecessor. The track has been widened front and rear, the overall width is up by 32mm to 1,682mm and the height is dropped by 13mm to 1,454mm - all this proving that the Polo’s more dynamic stance isn’t merely a stylist’s illusion. Naturally, this Polo’s more generous dimensions, including an overall length that’s up by 36mm to 3,952mm, equate to a more spacious interior than the previous generation car. Passengers benefit from increased leg and headroom as well as more space in the
rear to stow their luggage. There’s a 280-litre boot which increases to 952-litres when the rear seats are folded down. Volkswagen has worked on another low key but high quality cabin environment for the Polo. Soft touch plastics and subtle aluminium detailing are the order of the day. Optional convenience features include an air-conditioned glovebox, an MP3 player connection point, a multifunction steering wheel and a touch screen satellite navigation system. Prices are estimated at £9,000 to £15,000.

Little car, big idea LESS than three metres long but packed with intriguing design features, the Toyota iQ is an unashamedly upmarket citycar that’s the size of the smallest urban runabout, has the performance of a supermini and the cabin quality of a family hatchback. Designed to seat three adults and one child, the interior finish and exterior detailing are several notches above the citycar norm – as is the price. Still, for those smart enough to seek a tiny car that’s anything but tiny in its outlook, it could be just right. If you thought the two-seat smart car to be well packaged, then you’ll marvel at how Toyota has been able to fit in room for three adults and a child into a package hardly any bigger. How have they managed it? Well, the big 15-inch alloy wheels really are exactly at each corner of the car, so the space in between is virtually all dedicated to people. This wasn’t easy to achieve: the front wheels and their driveshafts had to be repositioned in front of the engine and gearbox rather than in their usual place behind. As a result, the typical dis-

THE iQ tance from the tip of the front bumper to the accelerator has been reduced by 120mm, freeing up that extra cabin space. The iQ’s classylooking too: the wraparound rear glass, the smoked headlamp units and the door mirrors with inbuilt indicators all position this as an upmarket small car choice. Step inside and the clever ideas continue. The asymmetric dashboard was designed to open up the whole cabin area, scooped out ahead of the front seat passenger so much that legroom is acceptable even when the seat is pushed right forward to allow for a large six foot adult to sit comfortably behind. It’s a different story in the seat behind the driver of course but a child would probably be fine there for short distances. Alternatively, you can fold down half of the back seat – or all of it – and increase luggage
space from a negligible 32-litres to a small Tesco shop-sized 242-litres. There’s also a storage tray that slides from below the rear seat. This is a cabin that feels much larger than Toyota’s more conventional Aygo citycar. And it is. Shoulder-to-shoulder distance between driver and front passenger is 50mm wider than in the company’s supposedly larger Yaris supermini and you could downsize from
their even larger Auris family hatchback without noticing much difference in this respect. A flat, thin under-floor fuel tank, a 20 per cent smaller heater unit and repositioned steering gear all make this possible. One day, all small cars will be designed this way. There’s a choice of two petrol engines and the option of either manual or CVT automatic gearboxes. Most will go for the 67bhp three

cylinder 1.0-litre unit but you can also talk to your dealer about the four cylinder 98bhp 1.33-litre engine borrowed from the Yaris. This is the ultimate expression of refined, yet environmentally efficient urban mobility, a model that turns conventional citycar thinking on its head. True, there’s premium pricing but nothing you’ll ever buy will be more cleverly designed. It is, in essence, a little car for people who think big. The price is £9,495-£10,275 [1.0] with fuel consumption (combined) 65.7mpg.

ford
Car of future FIESTA WITH 12 million Ford Fiestas already sold across the world, the latest model has a lot to live up to and it's been carefully designed to succeed. It's lighter, yet stiffer, greener and cheaper to run. It's also safer and better to drive even than the Mazda2 supermini with which it shares a common platform. This car represents Ford's future - in more ways than one. Inside, the first thing that you'll notice is that there's nowhere to put your key, Ford having switched to one of those trendy (but rather pointless) 'Power' buttons which you press to start. It's easier to get comfortable at the wheel than it was in the old car thanks to the improved seating and rake/reach wheel adjustment. And this is the first Ford small car to feature a driver's knee airbag, along with side airbags and optional curtain airbags. Engine choices start with the familiar 60PS 1.25 and 90PS 1.4-litre Duratec petrol units. Also carried over is the old, frugal if rather leisurely 68PS 1.4-litre TDCi. Above this level, things start to get a bit more interesting. Ford have been
doing a bit of work on the old model's 90PS 1.6-litre TDCi Duratorq engine with the result that you can now order it in ECOnetic form in which it emits just 99g/km of CO2, making it exempt from UK road fund duty. Other superminis look like lumbering 4x4s in comparison. At the other end of the scale, Ford is keen to show driving enthusiasts it hasn't forgotten them, with the introduction of a 120PS 1.6-litre T-VCT petrol powerplant that makes 60mph in 9.9s, used in plusher models that include the sporty Zetec-S. Overall, a pragmatic mix between tried and tested elements that are cost effective and shiny new details that gel extremely well. Small car buyers simply can't ignore this car. The price range is £8,514£13,406.

i20 3-DOOR IN car terms, Korean used to be a byword for tiny prices and dreary design but that’s changing. The big European marques are looking to Hyundai and its sister brand Kia with growing concern as their products mount a powerful challenge to the status quo in the European market. Cars like Hyundai’s i20 supermini have shown that the Koreans can do quality almost as well as they do value and in the next stage they’ll be trying to master sporty and desirable too. The 3-door version of the i20 is a useful marker of how far Hyundai and Korea have come. The i20 3-door is available with a range of petrol and diesel engines, the petrol line-up opening with Hyundai’s advanced 1.2-litre Kappa unit. With 77bhp, it’s not the punchiest engine fitted to a three-door supermini but its all-alloy construction and high-tech combustion system give a useful blend of performance and economy. In three-door form, the i20 shares the same dimensions and wheelbase as the five-door car and despite its edgier looks, customers can expect a similarly polished driving experience. The three-door version of a supermini tends to be the sporty one and the i20 model is no different. It’s the same size as the five-door and the front and rear are identical but it does feature elongated doors which aid access to the rear along with a tweaked side window line that tapers off to a point at the rear. Inside, practicality shouldn’t be affected too much by the conversion. Access to the rear seats is obviously trickier but Hyundai’s memory front seats slide a long way forward to allow rear seat passengers to step inside before returning to their original position. The three-door version of the i20 is significant for more than its injection of a sportier flavour into the range. It also makes the i20 that little bit cheaper. Hyundai’s pricing strategy isn’t straight out of the bargain basement these days. The brand knows its latest products can sell at levels that
Korean challenger are more in tune with the class leaders but value for money remains a central part of the marque’s strategy. A five-year warranty, generous equipment provision and a price range tickled downwards by the three-door’s introduction make the i20 an appealing prospect for people who make their buying decisions with a calculator close at hand. Hyundai’s exemplary warranty package will be a major draw for buyers with their eyes on the bottom line and the engines don’t let the side down when it comes to economy and emissions. The 1.2-litre petrol engine can average over 54mpg on the combined cycle
with CO2 emissions of 124g/km. Higher mileage drivers will find the premium needed to get a 1.4-litre diesel engine worthwhile thanks to the remarkable 64mpg and 116g/km CO2 output. Hyundai subjected its products to the harshest scrutiny when it made them good enough to compete in the mainstream. At the top end of the supermini market, success and failure are decided by the finest margins but the i20 stands up to close inspection very well. In three-door form, it looks like more of the same which should be good news for Hyundai’s bottom line.

Think big for comfort CHRYSLER SEBRING CABRIOLET YOU’VE got your sporty little convertibles and your big cruising convertibles and the Sebring Cabriolet falls very much into the latter category. It’s quite a size, being based on the Mondeo-rivalling Sebring saloon, and it’s about as lively as a student on a Sunday morning. The way to appreciate this car is as a large, comfy vehicle with a removable roof, a low price and a certain degree of exclusivity. If that prospect sounds attractive, the Sebring Cabriolet is worth a look and you might be more American than you think.
THE PRACTICALITIES
With the hood down, the Sebring Cabriolet is a fairly handsome thing. he brash front end with the hefty chromed grille is still something that will deter the introverted, but the gently rising belt line and the steeply raked windscreen give the Sebring a raffish look. It doesn’t gel quite so well with the hood in place, this model sharing with its predecessor a rather distended posterior. There’s room in the 356-litre boot for a couple of golf bags but the soft top roof steals a lot of space when it’s lowered.
BEHIND THE WHEEL
Were fuel bills as inconsequential as they are in the States, the Sebring Cabriolet 2.7 would undoubtedly be the plum pick of the range.
GIRL TALK with June Neary
Powered by a V6 petrol engine that generates a lazy 185bhp, it’s mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox and makes a great cruising car for those not particularly enthralled by performance or handling and more interested in topping up a tan. As it stands, however, the majority of UK buyers who do choose a Sebring Cabriolet will instead opt for the 2.0-
litre diesel option. This 138bhp Volkswagen engine is far from the most refined oil-burner we’ve come across and although it is certainly punchy when it gets into its stride, it doesn’t seem the ideal engine for this sort of car.
VALUE FOR MONEY Two models are sold and both are very well equipped. The 2.0-litre CRD Limited model that will prove more popular comes as standard with heated front seats, a six speaker Boston Acoustic stereo, air conditioning, a powered boot release, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, power folding and heated door mirrors, ESP stability control and a tyre pressure monitoring system. If you’re really serious about music, or
just easily bored, then the optional MyGIG music server and sat nav system will tempt.
COULD I LIVE WITH ONE? Big sales in its home market mean that the Chrysler Sebring Cabriolet has nothing to prove over here. Some would say that this is just as well but the car does have its appeal for buyers who are more in tune with their American side. For not a whole lot of money, it’s a big impressive-looking convertible and over here, hardly anyone else will have one. If you’re unconcerned with the finer points of handling or the intricacies of cabin quality but want comfort, lots of toys and space for four, the Sebring Cabriolet is a decent left-field option.
Family-friendly easy rider with a great engine FACTS
PEUGEOT 308 GT THP 175 AS long as you don’t go expecting a proper hot hatch, the Peugeot 308 GT THP 175 shouldn’t disappoint. It’s a great engine allied to one of the more comfortable and sophisticated family hatches around. If you like a car that feels bigger than it is and doesn’t expect you to try too hard, look no further. The 1.6-litre turbocharged powerplant is one of the best installations of its type. There’s a smooth surge of torque available across a broad range, with none of that bog and surge characteristic that afflicts many turbocharged engines. You may well have experienced it in the 207 GTi THP 175 and while the significantly bigger 308 can’t match the 207’s sprinting ability, it’ll still get to 60mph in 8 seconds and keep accelerating to 140mph. The 308 GT THP 175 looks a little more focused than its humbler brethren courtesy of a lower ride
CAR: Peugeot 308 GT THP 175 PRICES: £20,895 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 14E CO2 EMISSIONS: 180g/km PERFORMANCE: 0-60mph 8s/ Max Speed 140mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: (combined) 37.1mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: seven airbags / ABS & EBD / ESP stability control
height. Couple that with a lowered front bumper panel and a rear spoiler and you end up with a car that has a little more attitude. The 308 is never going to look like a lithe low rider though, the taller than average roofline being used to good effect in creating a roomy and airy interior. The long front overhang of the 308 creates a wedgeshaped profile that brings a further
sporty element to the car’s shape and assists in pedestrian safety. Those familiar with the Peugeot 207 supermini will find plenty they recognise in the 308 but the key differences on the larger car are the prominent V-shaped bonnet that extends down from the base of the A-pillars on a raised plain and the huge oblong foglights. The rear of the 308 has more of a bulbous look to it,
helping to maximise luggage space that runs to 430 litres and can be extended to 1,398 litres by folding the rear seats. The interior takes a sober but classy approach with the GT adding an aluminium gear knob and pedal set. It feels notably more upmarket than the inside of the old 307 and even more spacious. The GT features quite liberal use of chrome and expensive-looking
plastics with the lighter colour options proving particularly eye-catching. The middle section of the dash slopes down into the centre console, bringing its controls closer to the driver and creating a snug cockpit effect but you sit a long way back from the base of the steeply raked windscreen with a huge expanse of dashboard to look out across. This, combined with the 308’s long front overhang, may present problems when manoeuvring but the A-pillars, a constant impediment to the driver’s view in the 307, appear much thinner for improved visibility. Features include power steering, remote control central locking with deadlocks, electric front windows, a steering column adjustable for reach and rake, a CD player, height adjustment for both front seats, a trip computer and electrically operated door mirrors. Air conditioning, body-coloured mirror housings and door handles, alloy wheels with low profile tyres and ESP stability control are also standard. Peugeot hasn’t skimped on safety kit and there are seven airbags included. There’s also anti-lock brakes with brakeforce distribution and brake assist.

A top operator CLIO RENAULT was never about to let its Clio fall behind the pace setters in the supermini market. The foundations of the third generation Clio have always been strong and they remain so today. Renault has largely left them alone and concentrated on finessing the window dressing of the latest models. The Clio Mk III was always a big car in the supermini class but this facelifted model is even bigger. At 4,027mm, it’s 41mm longer than the pre-facelift model and that extra length is utilised in making the Clio appear lower, leaner and more streamlined. This isn’t one of those facelifts that leaves everyone at a loss as to what exactly has changed. The front end of the Clio is markedly more aggressive with the sharp lines of the air-intake and the headlights combined with the thin, smirking grille. It’s a look that debuted on the Megane family hatch and it gives the Clio a far more purposeful look, even in its non-sporting forms. The interior was also upgraded with some relocating of the minor controls to increase user-friendliness. Higher spec models now get a soft touch dash with the satellite navigation screen integrated into it. Renault is keen to highlight its most fuel efficient Clio models, making it easier for customers to pick them out and does so with its ECO2 branding. The
1.2 and 1.2 TCe petrol engines as well as two of the diesels qualify for ECO2 status because of their low emissions and fuel economy. The 86 and 106bhp diesel models both emit less than 120g/km of CO2, giving owners significant tax advantages as well as the opportunity to do their bit for the environment. The Clio’s strengths will remain its spacious interior, strong engine range and high quality feel. The latest models make a number of worthwhile improvements that increase the desirability of the package but with its core strengths, the Clio was a top supermini before and it’s a top supermini now.

Sweet smell of a car park
TRYING to find a parking space can get up drivers’ noses – but plans are being made to make the ordeal less odorous. The smell of car parks is putting off as many as a third of drivers from using them, a survey by car park company NCP found. So the firm is now using new technology to produce pleasant smells in the stairwells of some of its busiest car parks.
www.motorstoday.co.uk
Aromas such as roses, freshly-baked bread and cut grass will exude from stairwells in London, Birmingham, Leeds and Cardiff. Of the 2,000 people polled, two in three said stairwells were the worstsmelling part of car parks, with one in three associating these areas with the smell of urine. NCP chief executive Andrew Potter said:
“We are committed to offering our customers a pleasant and positive experience in our car parks and we fully recognise that unpleasant smells could drive customers away. “As such, by introducing pleasant smells, we are following through on our commitment to improving the customer experience and providing greater value for money.’’

Hatch has a sleek makeover VAUXHALL have been granted a huge degree of liberty in their styling of the Astra by the success of the rest of their more versatile product lines. For every Meriva or Zafira the company sells to the family motorist, a potential Astra driver wants something with sleeker styling. The five-door Astra is a very neat piece of penmanship but the equivalently priced three-door Sport Hatch model knocks it into next week. Many of the design cues remain, as the two cars are, after all, built on the same platform. The broad hips, the high window line and the family-look front end are largely carried over, with the three-door merely accentuating these details. Built alongside the five-door cars at General Motors' Antwerp plant in Belgium, the three-door, costing from £16,685, is some 39mm longer and 15mm lower, resembling the GTC concept car shown at the 2003 Geneva Show.

ASTRA SPORT HATCH
Naturally a few of the details were toned down for production. The lights are a little more conventional and the concept car's frameless doors have been deemed too costly for series production. Vauxhall has also tweaked the latest Astra's cosmetics a little, with sharper-looking front and rear lights, a revised front bumper, more chrome splashed about the grille and the choice of piano black or matt chrome interior finishing. Sport Hatch models also get a honeycomb front grille. There's a choice of four petrol and three diesel engines. The line-up kicks off with a modest 115PS 1.6-litre unit below a 140PS 1.8-litre engine. The pokey 180PS 1.6-litre turbocharged unit is also offered although this is resoundingly trumped by the 240bhp 2.0T unit that features in the rangetopping VXR performance variant.
Even the entry-level 1.6-litre engine is worth considering, using as it does the Twinport technology already seen on the Corsa. Three diesel engines are available: a 1.7-litre 100bhp unit, plus beefy 120bhp and 150bhp 1.9-litre powerplants developed by Fiat. As would be expected, all three meet the Euro IV emissions regulations which means that business users won't have to pay the onerous three per cent 'benefit in kind' surcharge that drivers of noncompliant cars get tapped up for. In keeping with the car's name, only the sporty SXI, SRi, Design and VXR trim levels are offered, all fitted as standard with lowered sports suspension and alloy wheels. There's also a 'Panoramic Windscreen' option, one of the year's most talked about automotive innovations, which for
around £850 extra, gives you a huge section of glass stretching from the top of the bonnet over the passengers' heads. Vauxhall claims that rear seat space is well up to par for two adults. They just didn't specify what size. The rear seat is a conventional three-abreast bench with a practical 60:40 split system offered as standard or the alternative 40:20:40 layout available as an option. Luggage room is slightly hampered by that rakish roofline but given the cavernous amount of space in the back of the five-door Astra, it's hard to see carrying capacity being a reason to grumble. Or much else come to that... Moorland Motors, Brand New Astra 1.4 SXi Sportshatch £13,221 must be registered by 31.03.09.

Launch of green machine BLACKPOOL Honda will holding the business launch of the new Honda Insight Hybrid car at the Solaris Centre in Blackpool on Tuesday, April 7. This will be an ideal opportunity to see and experience the unique characteristics of this innovative car and identify how the Insight can save the fleet user hundreds of pounds in running costs. The new Insight is a stylish and practical family hatchback offering both the private and business users significant savings on their annual motoring costs and all at the price of a conventional family hatchback. The Honda Insight significantly under cuts the Toyota Prius both on initial price and running cost over three years. Being a fleet dealership, Blackpool Honda with the new Honda Insight can offer the business user significant savings in income tax, fuel, road tax and residual values compared with similar conventionally powered vehicles. It also does its bit for the environment with low emissions and excellent fuel economy. The engine is a 1.3-litre unit based on the one in the Civic Hybrid and featuring a series of neat innovations. During deceleration, the cylinders are
INSIGHT closed off to boost efficiency and numerous modifications have been made to reduce friction inside the engine. The petrol unit might only have 87bhp but it is assisted by a 14bhp electric motor driven by power from a bank of nickel hydride batteries under the boot floor. These are recharged by energy reclaimed from the wheels when braking or coasting and, under acceleration. The car returns 64.2mpg on the combined cycle with emissions of 101g/km which is pretty impressive. It has an Eco Assist mode button that when depressed reduces the throttle response to smooth out the engine’s work load and cuts back on the efforts of the climate control system to achieve better economy. Honda’s Insight is a car that not only aims to cut its emissions through advanced technological solutions. So why not find out more at the Blackpool Honda’s Business Launch Event? little more distinguished in its styling in recent years while the Renault Scenic remains one of the best used buys.
MINI MPV The mini-MPV People Carrier is one of the motor industry’s most profitable success stories. Take one conventional Family Hatchback, then carefully inflate to the point where it can accommodate some of the versatility of a large, fully-sized MPV People Carrier. In all but a few of the cleverer, models, you’re still restricted to the same five-seater carrying capacity you’d find in an ordinary Family Hatchback. But then, the designers reckon it’s not the number of seats you have, it’s what you can do with them that counts. Expect in most cases to be able to fold, slide and remove completely to your heart’s content. Expect also to find an almost bewildering number of storage solutions and that slightly higher-set seating position for that ‘real’ MPV feel.
CHEAP & CHEERFUL It wasn’t until the Summer of 1999 that competitors to the Renault Megane Scenic got their hastilydesigned MPV rivals to market. The first of these, Vauxhall’s Zafira, was to give the French maker a nasty shock, managing as it did to incorporate seven, rather than just five, seats into a bodyshell which was approximately the same size. Briefly, it looked as if Vauxhall might net a landslide of sales but as it turned out, the mini-MPV
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Room for the family market split comfortably into those who wanted more than five seats and those who didn’t.
AFFORDABLE MID-RANGERS By 2000, the mini-MPV market was getting seriously crowded. The market leader, Renault’s second generation Scenic, got a new common rail dCi
diesel in the Spring and a trendy RX-4 4WD version in July. By then, what was to prove the biggest thorn in the Renault’s side was on sale, Citroen’s Xsara Picasso. These two cars were by now taking the lion’s share of the sales, with only Vauxhall’s Zafira getting close. This car had received a much improved new engine range for the 2001 model year.
DESIRABLE BUT POTENTIALLY PRICEY The Vauxhall Zafira and the Citroën Xsara Picasso were the two big sellers in the market but Ford’s C-MAX has kept them both honest and makes a better used buy. Also look out for later C4 Picasso models, especially in the more useful long wheelbase version. The Volkswagen Touran has become a
Thanks to the more compact size of the typical mini-MPV, scratches, scrapes, parking dents, bashed wing mirrors, grazed or split bumpers and kerbed alloy wheels are less of a problem than with larger People Carriers. The big, wide-opening doors are prone to knocks and dents however. Mechanically, as ever, you’ll need to see a full service history. Beware of smoky diesels. Older cars may suffer from sticky gearboxes, broken wiper motors, oil leaks, automatic gearbox problems, poor hot starting, worn suspension, clutch and gear linkage difficulties and so on.
