IT has been a successful sporting year for Waterloo Primary School, with high hopes of more glory to come.
The boys’ football team recently won the Bloomfield Cup for Primary Schools in Blackpool, after finishing runners-up two years ago.
Victories over Revoe and Our Lady booked Waterloo’s place for finals day at Stanley Park Oval. Waterloo played Roseacre in their semi-final and won by the odd goal.In the final against Stanley, who had defeated Layton in their semi final, Waterloo got on top and Will Robinson’s cool penalty gave them a half-time lead. Waterloo retained control and Michael Woon sealed victory and the cup with the second goal. Waterloo are now looking to complete the double after qualifying for the knockout stages of the Blackpool Primary Schools’ Champions’ League. Ten gymnasts represented Blackpool in the Lancashire Youth Games at Hyndburn (as featured in last week’s AllStars), showing great commitment and dedication to do Waterloo proud. Year 5 pupil Tommy Mason, who Year 4 climbers and (right) enjoyed great success in last year’s the canoeists competition, played a valuable part
in helping to train the team and supporting them on the day. Pakistani cricketer Mr Ashrat coaches the cricket club every Wednesday and the whole of Year 5 have been enjoying cricket in their curriculum PE lesson. Ashrat has been delivering highquality coaching as part of the “Chance to Shine” programme. Year 5 are also involved in a six-
week active lifestyles programme delivered by Sarah Linton, helping children to make healthy choices in life through practical fun activities. Some Year 4 children have been involved in a six-week outdoor programme involving orienteering , climbing at Stanley Park and canoeing at Lancaster Canal.

Yates leads medal parade FYLDE competitors have returned with a magnificent medal haul from the National Schools Biathlon championships at the University of Bath, having won through the North West qualifiers. Kirkham Grammar School’s Bradley Yates took the Year 6 crown after qualifying in Liverpool.
More than 230 competitors took part in the finals, which combine a 50m swim and a 1000m run. Bradley was in ninth after the swim but a win by over six seconds in the run secured victory. Four Poulton primary schoolboys have also been confirmed among the country’s best. Three of them helped their school, Carleton Green Community Primary, to finish third in the team event. And the other, Ciaran Johnson, finished fourth overall in the Year 5 event. Adam Hartley, Callum Preece and Kyle Preece represented Carleton Green, while Ciaran attends Carr Head School.
Aspects
All four achieved personal bests in both aspects of the biathlon. Ciaran totalled of 2,304 points, having completed the run in 3mins, 25.14secs and the swim in 38.26secs. Kyle finished eighth (2,280 points), Callum 14th (2244) and Ciaran 17th (2180). ■ BLACKPOOL schoolboy Marcus Quarmby, 16, finished third in the Year 11 age group in Bath. Marcus, who attends Arnold School, improved on last year’s fourth place after winning the NorthWest qualifier at Blackpool’s Palatine pool. He has won through to contest the world championships at Crystal Palace in August after achieving personal bests in both disciplines. Marcus took ten seconds off his 1,000m best to win in 2mins, 42.82secs and finished seventh in the 100m swim in 61secs.

Young duo are pocket dynamos HOT potters James Cahill and Jason Tart are breaking snooker records … and cueing up to keep a family tradition going. The Blackpool cousins are the youngest players to qualify for finals of the prestigious North West Pairs Championships in its 38-year history. James, 13, has a highest break of 113 and Jason,16, has already knocked in a 127. The pair are from snooker stock – they are the nephews of seven-time world snooker champion Stephen Hendry, and James is the son of former world ladies No.1 Maria Tart. They will be hoping to pocket the title in Sunday’s finals at the Regal Snooker Club in Preston. The favourite are professional pairing Jon Whitty (Liverpool) and Michael Wild (Oldham).
Clashes
However, the young hotshots are hoping to chalk up a stunning win. James said: “It’ll be tough but if we play well we can do it.” The pair have pulled out of the North West Under-21s, which clashes with the final. Jason, from South Shore, is studying a diploma in sport at Blackpool and the Fylde Colleg. His father Michael, former a top local player himself, is sponsoring James to play on the Challenge Tour for one season and he hopes to win a place on the professional tour. James is a Highfield School pupil who lives on Squires Gate Lane. His mother Maria manages Rileys Snooker Club in Church Street, where they both practise .
FULL STRETCH: Fleetwood’s Adam Dawson in the line-out
Blackpool’s level best BLACKPOOL RU U14s have won through to the Lancashire Vase final. Their clash with Fylde ended 5-5 but Blackpool won through as the away team. Blackpool scored first when Ellis Wolstencroft took captain Anthony O’Brien’s pass an smashed his way through. Fylde pulled level with wind advantage but it remained 5-5 at half-time as Blackpool full-back Liam Openshaw dealt with all the high balls which came his way. Blackpool took the game to Fylde in the second half but both sides defended well. The visitors had done enough to clinch a place against Sedgley Park in the final at Tarleton RU. Blackpool’s player of the match was Grzegorz Pawelczaz, who was superb in the lineouts, while winger Tom Scott was also outstanding.
Fleetwood RU U17 14 Preston Grasshoppers 10 A place in the semi-final of the Halbro Colts Bowl was at stake in these teams’ third meeting of the season. In a scrappy first half, backs Tom Evans, Kris Phillips, Joel Reynolds, Scott Kemp and Joe Morgan all defended well for Fleetwood. Preston drew first blood with a penalty, then converted an interception try to lead 10-0. But soon it was game on as no.8 Adam Dawson smashed through to score and Evans converted. Scrum-half Tom Evans cut through the Hoppers defence for a try which he converted. The visitors hit back strongly but Fleetwood regained their composure to hold out for the win Fleetwood squad: Bedford, Birks, Cowie, Dawson, J Evans, T Evans, Foden, Hird, Kemp, Macdonald-Hall, Maddern, Maher, Morgan, Phillips, Preston, Railton, Reynolds, Speed, Teale, Turner, Walters, Webster.
■ Ethan O’Hara was outstanding for a Fleetwood U11 side edged out 21-19 by Fylde.
Big finish for invincibles
KING Edward and Queen Mary School ended the hockey season with a clean sweep of wins over Merchant Taylors of Crosby. The first XI are pictured right, with captain Laura Bury who capped a fantastic season by leading her unbeaten team to a 2-1 win. Laura Bury, Megan Foy, Jessica Lambert, Amy Callaghan, Jordana Singleton and Laura Pickervance all played their last game for school and finished with a flourish. Sophie Owen’s pace
posed an early threat and KEQMS opened the scoring after 12 minutes, when Lambert’s shot was saved and Laura Pickervance converted the rebound. It remained 1-0 at halftimeafterMelBentley’sshot was cleared off the line. Their nerves were eased five minutes after the restart, when Foy drove down the right and crossed for the ball for Singleton to score. But the tension rose again when Merchant’s pulled one back but some desperate defending safe-
guarded the lead. The Under-15s also finished in style as Olivia Shaw scored a hat-trick in the 5-0 win. Joanne Ker and the excellent Natasha Singleton also scored, while Laura Wimperis and Lottie Owen were also outstanding for a side beaten only once all season. The Under-14s and Under-13s both avenged defeats with 1-0 victories. Wendy Wyatt was outstanding for the U14s and Kim Kirkham for the U13s.
■ BLACKPOOL RU tag team enjoyed two fine victories over Colne and Nelson, 5-1 and 4-1. Having won the first game in determined style, Blackpool rang the changes for the second and came back from behind to win. It was 3-1 at halftime in both matches and the star player was Kieran Yates.
Arnold’s avengers grab title ARNOLD School Under-14s have won the Fylde and Wyre Schools’ Basketball League at the first attempt. They faced a daunting opening game against Fleetwood school St Aidan’s, who won by 14 points. But Keith Bleakley’s Arnold side
found their feet to finish second to St Aidan’s in the league and earn a rematch with them in the championship final at Cardinal Allen. There was nothing to choose between the teams in the first half, which finished 10-10, but eight unanswered points for Arnold in
the third quarter proved decisive as they went on to win 32-20. Joe Roscoe was the man of the match and Ahmed Elamin the top scorer with 16. Mr Bleakley said: “The game was very tense but what a great end to the season!”

UNDER-11
South Shore 1 Lytham 5 LYTHAM completed their league campaign in five style as Andrew Sanderson scored a hat-trick. There was a super solo goal by Jack Tomes and George Carter scored his first of the season in a fine all-round Lytham display. Gallagher replied for Shore Fleetwood Town 1YMCA 5 YMCA completed their league campaign with this fine victory, having led at halftime through a Chris Clinch goal. Substitute Josh Clayton netted two quickfire goals soon after the restart to put YMCA in the driving seat. Town pulled a goal back through Smith but YMCA remained in control and the industrious Sam Warburton put the issue beyond doubt with two goals in the closing stages. James Corbett and Jordan Milligan both had fine games for YMCA.
UNDER-12
YMCA 1 Spirit ofYouth 1 BOTH sides went all out for a win in this excellent game. James Rowley’s ball-winning for YMCA was exceptional and Jack Crawford twice went close with fine volleys in the first half. But the home side were grateful for a superb Chester Duff save which denied Adam Matthews before Spirit broke the deadlock through Jack Richardson just before half-time. YMCA pinned Spirit back after the break and pulled level when Aiden Atchison finished off a goalmouth scramble from a Conah Bishop corner. Both sides went all out for a winner and YMCA saw a late penalty for handball strike the top of the bar Russell Townsend was outstanding for YM, with Jordan Willder menacing down the
left and Matty Smith working hard. Keeper Liam Beeker was immense for Spirit, though every player had a fine game. South Shore 6 Lytham 1 SHORE’S quality shone through after an even first half. Midfielder Josh Kay opened the scoring with a fine early strike but Lytham hit back almost immediately, left winger Brandon Matthews finishing a fine move which stretched the home defence. Both sides had chances before Jack Williams restored Shore’s advantage just before half-time. Shore got on top after the break as Williams completed another-hat trick. The impressive Josh Boyne added the fifth before man of the match Kay volleyed the final goal with great panache. Mark Drinnan was notable in defence. Poulton 2 St Annes 0 ST ANNES started brightly but found Poulton keeper Andrew Sheffield in fine form. Then Poulton got to grips with the conditions and Tom Morrison slid the opener past the advancing keeper from Sam Willan’s fine through ball . A second goal from man of the match midfielder Philip Allen sealed the game after the interval, though St Annes went close with a Tom Bradley free-kick and a longrange effort by their outstanding player Lewis Hodge. Also impressive for St Annes were Robbie Morris, Reece Duffy, captain James Naylor and stand-in keeper Robert Mellinge. George Ratcliffe and Tom Ardron were notable too for Poulton. Clifton Rangers 2 AFC Blackpool 5 TWO goals in the first four minutes by AFC man of the match Joe Shaw and Callan Roberts put the visitors in control. Clifton tried to hit back but
Thomas Young made it 3-0 at half-time. Shaw, Taylor Clews and Leon Platt all efforts saved and Young hit the bar before the home side pulled one back. Leon Platt broke to make it 4-1, then Clifton netted a second before Clews completed the scoring. Parsons and Webster were the Clifton scorers. FC Rangers 1 BJFF B 2 BOTH sides had chances in a fine first half but the only goal went BJ’s way from a free-kick just outside the box. Callum Shreeve went closest for Rangers before half-time. Bispham defended well after the break but Kerr rounded the keeper to equalise with 15 minutes left. The home side pressed for the winner but BJ scored it on the counter. Carson and Houldsworth netted for the winners, while Nathan Reid was superb in the FC attack. Thornton Cleveleys 1 Fleetwood Town 5 FLEETWOOD led 1-0 at halftime with a Matt Chadwick penalty won by man of the match debutant Dylan Bury. Town old boy Sam Firman equalised five minutes after the restart but the visitors regained control with a Callum Ellis double, his first a fine header from Danny Haines’ cross and the second a deft free-kick into the bottom corner. Ben Reader won a second penalty, again converted by Chadwick, and Reece Young completed the scoring with a near-post header from Josh Robinson’s inswinging corner. Wyre 4 Blackpool Rangers 0 WYRE produced a thoroughly disciplined performance to gain a comfortable win. With the wind in the home side’s favour in the first half, Joseph Fairhurst had a longrange effort saved, but having got his sights in he scored from halfway on 20 minutes. Fairhurst doubled the lead
from a Sam Morley corner on 28 minutes. Wyre kept Rangers at bay after the break and defied the elements by playing some neat football. Matthew Brooke-Naylor applied a neat finish to Alex Ward’s pass after 50 minutes and substitute Alex Darlington completed the scoring with a tap-in five minutes later.
UNDER-13
Fleetwood Town 1 Foxhall 4 FLEETWOOD missed a penalty in the opening moments but managed to take the lead shortly before halftime through Wilkinson. However, Foxhall fired on all cylinders after the break and never took their foot off the pedal. Their scorers were Joe Darnell, Kurt Willoughby, Calvin Ross and Daniel Wilson. Thornton Cleveleys 3 St Annes 4 BOTH teams started well but it was the home side who moved into a three-goal lead courtesy of Khambay’s hattrick. St Annes stayed strong and pulled one back before the break through Adam Chapman. The visitors were fired up for the second half and Danny Clarkson reduced the deficit to one. Keeper James Remnant made some fine saves and Clarkson levelled the scores. The comeback was completed with 10 minutes to go, when Chapman’s second sealed the win. Harry Spracklen was named man of the match. Wyre Juniors 0 Clifton Rangers 12 TOP of the table Clifton continued their unbeaten run as Jamie Smith and Ash Moreau both scored hat-tricks. There were two apiece for Tom Adams and Dom Brown, while Dave Morrell and an own goal completed the tally.

South Shore 11 Fleetwood Gym 0 SHORE came under early pressure battling against the wind and took the lead against the run of play from an own goal. But the home side then took charge and goals by Mathew Houston, from a delightful Josh Buchanan through ball, and Jack Harrison gave them a half-time cushion. Harry Caton scored a second-half hat-trick, while there were two for Jamie Thompson and a second for Houston. Tom Egan and Buchanan completed the scoring, while Fleetwood battled bravely on but could not deny Shore a first clean sheet of the season.

The other scorers were Nathan Frodsham and Ben Proctor as Lytham reached double figures, including a goal in the first five seconds of the second half. Charlie Goldie Galloway was outstanding in midfield and Matty Fox played well. Bennett scored the Warton consolation. St Annes 4 Fleetwood Town 1 A STORMING first-half performance by St Annes secured the points as strong play down the right from Matthew Hartley and James Pendleton helped set up man of the match Harrison Ball for his four goals. Fleetwood pulled one back through Porter just before the break to give them a chance in the second half. But outstanding defending by Scott Little, Matthew Hanson and Gavin Annetts kept Fleetwood at bay and
Callum Binks made some good saves. St Annes were denied a fifth when Joshua Lacey hit the woodwork. YMCA 9 Staining 1 YMCA fell behind early on to a Briscoe strike but soon got into their stride with Ryan Riley’s equaliser. Paul Deele put YMCA ahead with a 25-yard strike followed by a superb Zenda Stemp goal. Ryan Allan scored two before Liam Whitehead set up a second for Riley, who finished with four, including a 30-yard cracker. Allan sealed his hat-trick, while Liam Robinson had a fine game in defence. Spirit ofYouth 0 South Shore 6 SHORE adapted excellently to the windy conditions and scored three in each half. Goals by Kez Knight, Steven Howe and Tyler Austin put them in control at the break. They defended solidly against the wind after the interval as all three goalscorers notched a second, Knight’s a real blockbuster. AFC Blackpool 0 Foxhall 4 ROBBIE Hulme’s welltaken goal gave Foxhall an early lead, which Markkus Pemberton doubled from Liam Crossley’s fine cross despite good defending by AFC. Josh Keen, Jack Wood and Ryan Lubimbi all went close to increasing the lead, though AFC’s offside trap worked well. However, Pemberton added his second before firing across goal for Jackson Hulme to blast the fourth into the left corner.
UNDER-15
Wyre 2 St Annes 6 JASON Blackwell and Mattie Kay soon began to create chances for St Annes but it was emphatic man of the
match Ryan Rogers who neatly headed the only goal of the first half. The goals flowed freely after the break as Jake Partridge headed the second from Jamie Abbey’s sweet free-kick. Wyre pounced to pull one back before Rogers drove home St Annes’ third from a narrow angle. Saul Thorpe netted the fourth before Zack Houghton got on the end of Blackwell’s fine cross to poke home for his first ever goal within five minutes of coming on. Wyre scored their second before Houghton’s second completed the scoring. Danny Elliott also impressed. Scorers for the home side were Hadgraft and Chin. YMCA 0 Blackpool Rangers 1 A PHILLIPS goal on the hour mark was enough to settle this match. YMCA enjoyed most of the early pressure, though their man of the match Jonathan Houston defended bravely as the visitors came more into the game. Jack Chamberlain made some good saves for YMCA, while Sam Slack and Joe Kennedy made some lastditch tackles and Yiannis
Verenakis made a welcome return after a long injury lay-off.

Rampant tourists hit hosts for eight
CLIFTON Rangers Junior FC played an international last week – taking on touring Canadian club Ladner Selects FC at Squires Gate.
The under-14s from Vancouver proved too strong for Clifton’s under-13s and ran out 8-1 winners, despite an early equaliser by Tom Adams after good play from Jamie Smith and Sam Heany.
Clifton under-15s edged a tight match 2-1. After exchanging own goals, Clifton’s deserved winner was neatly finished by Louie Butcher. The clubs now hope to forge a link and play each other annually.
